Legally Blonde is one of those great movies from the 2000s that’s brimming with one-liners we still repeat to this day. In honor of its 25th anniversary, one of the movie’s writers shared an amusing anecdote I’ve always been curious about. How did the amazing “bend and snap” scene come to be?

Kirsten Smith has previously called the invention of the bend and snap a “spontaneous invention” that was the result of “a completely drunken moment in a bar”. But there’s much more to it. In her words:

In the new interview, Smith said she loved writing Legally Blonde’s many iconic moments, but many of them actually came about later in the process. She and her co-writer Karen McCullah Lutz knew they wanted to give Jennifer Coolidge’s Paulette more to do, but it took some thinking. As she added to Gold Derby:

While I certainly would have thought the bend and snap was in the DNA of Legally Blonde from the beginning, that wasn’t the case. The scene came out of the rewrite stage via some notes from producer Marc Platt.

Legally Blonde would have certainly been a bit of a different movie if there was a crime at the salon instead. But it just wouldn’t have been the same without the plotline revolving around Paulette’s crush on the UPS guy. The screenwriters ultimately felt a sprinkle of romance in the B-plot would be better served than a crime due to their personal strengths as writers. I think they made the right choice.

Smith also recalled the famed scene being a “much longer sequence” and originally feeling like “the movie fully stopped” for a musical number. But after it went through the editing room, the co-writer felt like the Legally Blonde scene “became the perfect length.”

One of the most striking things about the Legally Blonde prequel TV series Elle, which is available to stream with a Prime Video subscription, is just how much Elle Woods newcomer Lexi Minetree looks like Reese Witherspoon. Don’t take my word for it. Witherspoon herself posted on Instagram to show that comparison pics between the two are pretty spot-on. But the similarities don’t just stop there.

In an interview with Variety, Jason Moore, who directed the first two episodes of Elle, noted that Reese Witherspoon and Lexi Minetree are also the same height. He said:

To get the nerves of the initial in-person meeting out of the way, Reese Witherspoon attended a table read to break the ice with the cast of the series on the 2026 TV schedule. By the time she got to set for the scene where Elle gets knocked in the face and Miles (Jacob Moskovitz) takes her to the hospital, she was able to just be a part of the day, which included 200 extras.

Reese Witherspoon was also generous with advice that she gave to Lexi Minetree, to always choose kindness and never go low, even when other people do. How very Elle Woods of her.

While the similarities between Lexi Minetree and Reese Witherspoon are easy to see, the 25-year-old who filmed her version of Elle Woods’ Harvard admission essay as her audition was able to make the role her own. You can check out a video of that video essay below:

The best kind of prequel is the one that allows its lead to understand the character and follow their own instincts, never forgetting where they came from, or in this case, where they’re going. Minetree has revealed that she watched Legally Blonde somewhere around 150 times, which shows that she’s quite the overachiever herself. And she had the same dedication when it came to perfecting the voice of Elle Woods. Moore said:

A lot of the critics have objections to the Legally Blonde prequel series, which I don’t agree with. Personally, I found Elle delightfully entertaining. As someone who’s spent time in the Seattle music scene, it was full of nostalgia that brought a smile to my face and warmed my heart. And watching Lexi Minetree pay tribute to Reese Witherspoon’s iconic work made me excited to see what she does as the character continues her prequel journey.

Elle’s love triangle, a tribute to The Breakfast Club, Bruiser, and all sorts of silly fun were present when the series hit the streaming schedule. Elle, the prequel series to Legally Blonde (one of the best movies of the 2000s), has premiered on the 2026 TV schedule, and it reminds me so much of the soapy and silly teen dramas I grew up watching. I mean that in every way too. On the one hand, it features fun, romantic, and exaggerated plots like those shows from the 2000s and 2010s. On the other hand, it features some wild whiplash-worthy and confusing plot twists many of those shows had too.

So, while I was here for all of Elle’s absurdity, I have to say, there was one bonkers plot twist I couldn’t get over.

Overall, I’m Here For How Bonkers Elle Is

Listen, I can get behind outlandish storylines and silly plot points. In fact, I love when a show leans into them.

For example, Elle’s new school having essentially no sports other than cross-country is ridiculous, but I was here for it. I thought it was creative and quite fun to see Lexi Minetree’s character put together a homecoming event around a cross-country meet. Plus, it was this event that really helped solidify Elle’s love triangle that I’m now very invested in.

Also, while the entire show revolving around Elle and her friends exposing their corrupt principal was admittedly crazy, I was so entertained by it that I binged all of Elle incredibly fast. I was here for them all getting detention so they could break into his office (which led to the best episode inspired by one of the best movies from the ‘80s, The Breakfast Club), and I thought it gave the show some interesting and high stakes.

However, while I dug these bonkers storylines and choices overall, there was one unexpected plot twist that was too much.

The Death Of Shannon’s Mom Gave Me Whiplash

To be frank, I didn’t know Elle was a show where abruptly killing a character off was an option. This pink bubbly comedy was the last place I expected that to happen. However, at the end of Episode 4, Shannon’s mom died, and that’s the plot twist that gave me whiplash.

It came right after Shannon had broken up with Miles, and Elle had kissed him at the end of the cross-country meet. So, this death added extra drama to the romance situation, which felt very weird and unnecessary.

Then, Elle attempted to help Shannon and fix the mess she made with Miles by planning Shannon’s mom’s memorial in Seattle. This is where things got even weirder, because she decided it’d be a good idea to hold it in a Rainforest Cafe. I know these are teenagers making decisions, so logic isn’t exactly something they use. However, this was truly crazy.

Overall, the way Elle killed off Shannon’s mom and then used her death as a point of drama in both the principal corruption storyline and the love triangle was odd. If they were going to have it, it should have been its own main storyline, not a plot point used to make two other storylines more dramatic.

However, it did not ruin the show for me at all. As I said, for the most part, I really enjoyed this Legally Blonde prequel, and I will be tuning in for Season 2. But I also can’t deny that this one crazy plot twist did baffle me to my core.

Reese Witherspoon has never forgotten Elle Woods, and much of that is thanks to fans who never let her forget how iconic the character still is. The actor defined a generation with her positive demeanor and classic pink style. Elle also owned the courtroom with bubbly authenticity. After 25 years, the actor was finally ready to pass “the pink torch” to a new actress, Lexi Minetree, in a prequel comedy series that takes place long before Harvard.

The new series can be watched with an Amazon Prime subscription. Elle only has eight episodes, which makes for a quick and easy binge. Witherspoon stopped by The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to dish about the new series and revealed the unexpected place she gets classic Legally Blonde one-liners thrown at her all the time:

One thing I always loved about the movie is how easily quotable it is. Some phrases are almost more iconic than her classic pink style. But fans weren’t the only ones excited for Elle’s comeback. Witherspoon was so hyped for the upcoming prequel that she celebrated by bringing back the bend and snap. However, despite the fan anticipation for the series, critics had objections to certain “teen drama cliches” they felt were in the series, such as a certain love triangle.

On the other hand, I learned a long time ago that what the critics think is hardly ever what the fans think. Despite critics objecting, the prequel series was number one on Amazon. This resulted in a sweet thank you from Reese Witherspoon to every fan who took the time to watch Elle. While she was at the Tonight Show, the actor spilled the tea on why now was the right time for her to bring the “iconic character” back:

Growing up with the film, I always loved how Elle was this role model. She never let anyone define who she was. She was a sweet, independent, and positive woman who was a bit outside the norm at Harvard Law, but she never apologized for being herself. To me, this makes her a classic “feminist” character who serves as a reminder for young women to never forget to pursue their own dreams.

The “fish out of water” story is one that defined Legally Blonde, as she went from the sorority house to Harvard. The prequel Elle takes the same path, by symbolically taking young Elle from the sunny climate of Bel-Air to the rainy city of Seattle. And not just because of the obvious fashion differences.

The prequel had fun reinventing the character, though it never forgets where Elle is going to end up. For those of us who lived on Legally Blonde, the streaming series gives little winks, such as when it dropped a hilarious reveal about the character. Hint: it may have to do with her astrological sign.

I can't wait to see if any of Elle's one-liners will be quoted to Witherspoon at Starbucks.

The Legally Blonde prequel series just landed on the 2026 TV schedule earlier this week, and I’ve already binged the whole season. What, like it’s hard? The season finale left a pit in my stomach as Elle Woods finds herself between Dustin and Miles – especially since I’m not totally sure which guy I want to see her with. As I think about it, I found some comments from one of the show’s main cast members that helped me understand why I’m probably as confused as the future lawyer is.

Why Elle's Love Triangle Has Me Perplexed

The last shot of Season 1 has Elle and Dustin sharing a smooch while Miles watches it happen from a distance. On one hand, it’s a moment I wanted to happen as the chemistry between Elle and Dustin started to really build in the second half of the season. But at the same time, my heart breaks for Miles as well.

I totally get why Miles would be both confused and angry at seeing Elle suddenly kiss another guy after what happened between them. Elle and Miles had an adorable first kiss, but things ended before they could even heat up because Elle was worried about ruining her friendship with his ex, Shannon. Also, I'm caught between Miles being more of Elle's type and liking the idea of Elle going against type with Dustin.

Usually when I watch shows with love triangles like this, I have a clear favorite. Honestly, I’m kind of stuck on this one.

Comments From One Elle Star Has Me Thinking Differently About Dustin vs. Miles

Then I read what Zac Looker (who plays Dustin) told Deadline about the situation. In his words:

This is so true. Looker makes such a good point here that makes me realize why I'm having a hard time choosing between Team Dustin or Team Miles. While in another similar show I’ve found myself screaming at the TV over a high-schooler’s choice of boyfriend, this time I feel as if Elle really is between a rock and a hard place. Looker also made this point:

I mean, at the end of the day, we know from Legally Blonde that Elle’s ultimate love story is with Luke Wilson’s Emmett, but I still love that Reese Witherspoon passed the “pink torch” to Lexi Minetree to tell some fun high school boy drama from Elle's early love life. (And, I don't agree with the negative reviews of this show). Knowing neither of them are endgame doesn’t stop me from being curious about how Elle is going to get out this mess, and if she’ll end up picking one of them to genuinely date while at Rainier West.

Looker’s comments have me more validated around my feelings about the finale, and I'm hoping we’ll get a Season 2 so we can see how Elle goes from here!

One of my favorite things about Legally Blonde is how many beloved lines came out of a single script. Elle Woods has so many great lines said by Reese Witherspoon, but my favorite has to be when she declares that she and her little doggy Bruiser Woods are both “Gemini vegetarians.” Especially as a longtime resident of Los Angeles myself, it’s literally the perfect way to make fun of us with a single line. And in the prequel series, Elle, they ran with the quote in a direction I really didn’t expect.

The entire first season of Elle just premiered on the 2026 TV schedule, and while it took a couple of episodes to grow on me, I don’t agree with a lot of the critics. It’s a delightful series, and I hope it continues. Anyways, my favorite Elle Woods-coded moment comes in episode seven after Elle and her friends serve their time in detention and she’s explaining the situation to her mother Eva (played dynamically by June Diane Raphael). She ends up saying this:

Elle completely defines herself by her astrological sign of Gemini, because of course she does, but this time when she talks about it, her mom admits something. In Eva's words:

So while Elle thought she was a Gemini her whole sixteen years of life thus far, she learns that she’s technically a Cancer. It was hidden from her thanks to a bet that went on between her dad and his work buddies. Here’s her actual birthday, according to her mom:

What I love about this is, of course, a Legally Blonde prequel series that would talk about the origins of Elle Woods’ astrology and deepen it. It just makes sense. Plus, as an L.A. girlie myself who had my own phase of over-analyzing my astrology, I absolutely love this development for her. Elle being humbled by astrology just made me laugh so hard, because it's just so on brand for her.

While she’s definitely a Gemini icon no matter what, I think her having a Cancer cusp makes a lot of sense because that sign, in its broadest sense, is known to be for very intuitive, loyal, nurturing and moody people, which is Elle Woods!

From my understanding, when you’re a cusp, you can kind of take on the traits of both signs you are kind of in between, so Elle can be both now. Now every time I rewatch Legally Blonde, I'll be thinking about how Elle's darkest secret is probably that she's technically a Gemini/Cancer cusp. Here’s my favorite line that the whole scene leads up to:

Later on, Elle must have decided to claim her Gemini side rather than Cancer – but the teenage identity crisis in that moment on Elle is too perfect! Bravo to the creators, because this reveal was so well handled, and I'm claiming it for her.

You can tell that a movie like Reese Witherspoon’s Legally Blonde is a classic when we’re still quoting Elle Wood’s iconic lines and talking about the “bend and snap” a quarter-century after its release. Now we’re getting the chance to know the unlikely law student before Harvard, as the prequel Elle is set to hit the 2026 TV schedule. Reviews are here, and many critics have objections.

Elle, which will be available to stream with a Prime Video subscription starting July 1, takes place six years before the events of Legally Blonde. Newcomer Lexi Minetree is taking over Elle Woods duties from Reese Witherspoon, and the comparison pics between the two are pretty spot-on. So where do the critics’ issues lie? In his review of Elle, IndieWire’s Ben Travers says the prequel series doesn’t attempt any of the humor or charm that made us love the 2001 movie. Instead, he says, it’s a tired teen drama with a lazy (and inexplicable) mystery. He gives it a D+, writing:

One issue the reviews are calling out is one that we at CinemaBlend even pointed out after seeing Elle’s trailer: The series ultimately cheapens the plot of the movie by putting Elle through the same conflicts only six years earlier. Therese Lacson of Collider rates Elle 5 out of 10, confirming the very thing we were concerned about:

Marah Eakin of The Wrap says the prequel feels “thin and forced,” taking the heightened comedic fantasy world of Legally Blonde and replacing it with “a dour hellhole full of gloomy teens.” In Eakin’s words:

Dave Nemetz of TV Line says Elle is cute enough with some clever moments. However, there’s a certain “spunk” missing from it, as it trades what we loved about Legally Blonde for teen drama clichés. The critic gives it a C, writing:

It’s not all bad, though. Vicky Jessop of NME’s review of Elle gives it 4 out of 5 stars, saying that fans of Legally Blonde who are looking for more of the fish-out-of-water tale they love will be happy with this offering, which takes a lot of the movie’s beats and freshens them up for a modern-day audience. Jessop says:

It looks like a bit of a rough start for the Lexi Minetree-led series, though it’s definitely worth noting that the majority of the reviews I read went out of their way to compliment the actress’ portrayal of the beloved character. So far Rotten Tomatoes scores Elle Season 1 at 43% from 13 reviews.

We’re only days away from the Legally Blonde prequel series Elle premiering, after anticipating it on the 2026 TV schedule for a hot (pink) minute. Since Reese Witherspoon is a producer on Elle through her Hello Sunshine banner, she really got to know Lexi Minetree. Speaking about that, the 25-year-old actress recalled one piece of advice Witherspoon gave to her:

The actor plays the part of mayoral candidate Dean Wilson in the show, and was given an emotional shoutout by the show’s creator during the New York City premiere earlier this week. The series was created by The Vampire Diaries writer Caroline Dries and Insecure’s Laura Kittrell.

The prequel follows a 16-year-old Elle Woods circa 1995 as her family moves out to Seattle from Los Angeles, starting her at the bottom of the high school food chain and very out of place. I’m sure it also helps that she was already friends with Reese Witherspoon, too. While the actress worked on Elle as an executive producer and has been very supportive of Minetree’s casting – I mean, she literally told her she’d be playing Elle – her friendship with Dickson also made their connection even deeper. Due to all this, the young actress was able to literally wear The Morning Show star’s clothes for this press tour, and they fit perfectly:

Well, this certainly feels like a “What, like it’s hard?” moment, because it all seemingly happened so seamlessly. The dress fit her perfectly, and Minetree was able to channel the woman who came before her as Elle Woods during her own appearance on The Tonight Show. In Witherspoon's words, it also proved that:

It would seem she really was meant to be Elle Woods. Not only did she capture the Legally Blonde character’s energy perfectly in Elle’s trailer, but she also simply resembles Witherspoon and is able to rock the iconic pink outfits she wore decades ago.

James Van Der Beek died at the age of 48 back in February after battling cancer for over two years, but he is set to appear on the 2026 TV schedule because he has a role in the Legally Blonde prequel series, Elle. So, now that we're approaching the show's premiere, the late actor was sweetly honored by Elle’s showrunner, Caroline Dries, at the premiere this week, and man, it’s got me emotional.

Van Der Beek, who’s the most beloved for his role on Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues, went back to the 1990s (Elle is set in 1995) to play a mayoral candidate named Dean Wilson. Here’s how the Elle showrunner paid tribute to the actor while on stage during the premiere:

It sounds like Van Der Beek was an absolute ray of sunshine on set despite his health struggles. I’m so happy Caroline Dries took the time to share her experience with the actor while Elle was in production last year. It’s further proof that the world lost a wonderful man who really seemed to soak up every last moment of his life before he lost his battle with cancer. It’s so touching that she took the time to celebrate his good character and affirm his legacy.

James Van Der Beek was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in August 2023, which wasn't made public until November 2024. While living with the serious disease, the actor didn't stop working. He appeared on Season 13 of The Masked Singer, a couple episodes of Overcompensating and the thriller film The Gates. Elle’s release marks the last role he worked on before his death. He also left behind six children whom he shares with wife Kimberly Brook.

Elle follows 16-year-old Elle Woods before her stint at Harvard. After establishing the perfect life as a high schooler in Los Angeles, her parents throw her a curveball when they decide to move to Seattle, Washington. Suddenly, Elle finds herself as a fish out of water in a place where dark colors, grunge and flannels are all the rage… not hot pink!

The show is produced by the original Elle Woods, Reese Witherspoon, who previously paid tribute to James Van Der Beek, following his death. She called him an “extraordinary, talented man who also showed great kindness and grace in every action”. Everyone truly speaks so highly of him, and it's got me in my feels.

Additionally, Minetree recreated Elle’s Harvard bikini admissions tape as part of her own audition for the upcoming series. If you need more convincing that Minetree is the perfect person for the role, she spoke on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (as seen on YouTube) about how many times she watched the OG movie, and I’m blown away:

If someone's watched Legally Blonde 150 times, I can totally see how Jennifer Coolidge's voice would be ingrained in them. But, that aside, the mere notion of the actress watching the movie from start to finish so many times is wild. I suppose, however, that was an understandable way for her to prep for such an iconic role.

Admittedly, Legally Blonde is one of those movies fans can watch over and over again due to its funny, iconic one-liners. It's also one of the best movies to motivate anyone who feels like a fish out of water. Considering the sheer number of times Minetree has seen Legally Blonde, I’m confident she's absorbed enough of Elle Woods to be able to pass the bar exam herself!

What we know so far about Prime Video’s Elle TV show is that it takes place in 1995 and sees a pink-loving teenager Elle Woods being is forced to move with her family from sunny Bel-Air to grungy Seattle. Reese Witherspoon serves as an executive producer on the show, which has already been renewed for a second season.

Notably, the series also marks James Van Der Beek’s final role, as he plays school district superintendent Dean Wilson. I’m already anticipating feeling teary-eyed getting to see the talented TV actor one more time. Additionally, I'm ready for this show to inject the streaming schedule with some truly nostalgic vibes.

I'm hopeful that Lexi Minetree will effectively lead the show, and I look forward to seeing how she grows into her role. Based on the trailers and Minetree's comments about her preparation, I have no reason to doubt her abilities thus far.

Fans aren’t the only ones excited about the return of Elle Woods on the 2026 TV schedule. Reese Witherspoon is celebrating her character’s origins by bringing back the bend and snap just in time for the premiere of the prequel to Legally Blonde, aka Elle. But let’s be honest, did it ever really go away?

The actress posted a clip from the first Legally Blonde movie, where her character gives Jennifer Coolidge a lesson on how to impress the deliveryman. The clip transitions from the bend and snap to Witherspoon dancing in celebration. Her bubbliness is exactly how I’m feeling about getting more Elle Woods content. Fans are freaking out over the clip, referring to it as “iconic.”

Fans were snapping to the punchline in the comments with one, rossy231268, saying what we were all thinking. (OK, at least what I was thinking):

We've already seen an Elle trailer, and Witherspoon's been pretty supportive of the endeavor in the time since. She’s previously shared comparison pictures of her and Minetree, and the resemblance is uncanny. I can only hope the newcomer captures Elle’s bubbly personality as well as she nails the pink wardrobe.

While fans are excited, they’re also a little nervous about the upcoming series. Personally. I do think they have a right to be a little worried. It’s no secret the second film isn’t quite as beloved as the first. While I didn’t mind the sequel, it was nowhere near as iconic or memorable. Though Luke Wilson did reprise his role, which we can all be thankful for. No one even remembers Legally Blondes, which was the franchise’s first attempt at a spin-off. So, how will a prequel fare?

I have rewatched Legally Blonde many times, and it still brings the same nostalgic joy that it did growing up. It was a rom-com that felt hopeful, sentimental, and OK, cheesy, but there’s a reason it’s still a classic. Seeing Reese Witherspoon stepping back into Elle’s shoes, even briefly, makes me want to experience the movie all over again. And I’m not the only one. After watching the actor’s bend and snap, Momuninterrupted says:

This is why Elle has a lot to live up to, and I hope that it can capture the same magic. I think Witherspoon feels hopeful, too. After all, she's producing, and has been supportive from the get-go. Or at least from the moment Minetree was cast.

It's unclear how much romance can be expected in the new series, or if the show will focus on the fish-out-of-water trope. That was briefly touched on when Elle first arrived at Harvard, a ray of pink in a sea of Earth tones. The trailer gave me Clueless vibes with her going from the colorful Bel-Air to the dreary Seattle after her dad gets a new job.

The new series plans to show fans how Elle became who she is. They can expect her to experience a few life lessons along the way. Catch Elle with an Amazon Prime subscription starting on July 1.

Reese Witherspoon shared comparison images from Legally Blonde and its upcoming TV prequel, Elle, and the side-by-side shots make it clear that Lexi Minetree has been studying at the Church of Bend and Snap, but that’s not all. They both look “comfortable using legal jargon in everyday life.”

Witherspoon posted the photos to Instagram alongside Hello Sunshine, pairing some of her best Legally Blonde moments with Minetree’s take on a young Elle Woods. The result is less a simple nostalgia dump and more a pink, sparkly handoff across generations, complete with lounge chairs, landline drama, classroom confidence and enough Elle energy to pass the vibe check in front of a full admissions board. Elle is a prequel series coming to streaming for all with a Prime Video subscription. The story follows Elle Woods during her teenage years, long before Harvard Law, Warner Huntington III and that perfect courtroom hair flip. The series is scheduled to premiere July 1, 2026 and, as can be seen, Minetree is playing the younger version of the character Witherspoon made famous in the 2001 movie.

Witherspoon’s caption made the whole thing feel even more full circle. She wrote:

Also, there's a classroom comparison, which may be the most important one. Witherspoon’s Elle in glasses and a sharp suit sits against Minetree’s young Elle in a softer pink school look. That’s where the prequel idea starts to click. Elle is not just trying to recreate outfits, though they are clearly part of the legal brief. It is trying to show the early version of the confidence, optimism and underestimated intelligence that made Elle Woods work in the first place. And that's why, despite my trepidation after seeing the show's first trailer, I'm cautiously optimistic.

Lexi Minetree Has Some Very Pink Shoes To Fill

The pressure on Minetree is real because Elle Woods is not just a character people remember. She is a whole pop-culture operating system. The original film is one of the best movies of the 2000s, as it follows Elle from sorority life to Harvard Law, where she proves she is far more than the assumptions people make about her. On that note, the line referenced in the headline comes from the original film, when Elle’s résumé includes being “comfortable using legal jargon in everyday life,” which remains one of the most Elle Woods sentences ever written.

The prequel takes the character back to the 1990s, focusing on her life before college and law school. According to recent reports, Elle explores her high school years and her move from Bel-Air to Seattle, with Reese Witherspoon and Hello Sunshine involved behind the scenes.

That setup gives the show room to answer a fun question: Was Elle always Elle, or did she have to build that confidence one pink accessory at a time? Based on Witherspoon’s comparison post, the answer seems to be both. Minetree’s version has the visual DNA down, but the real trick will be finding the person beneath the sparkle.

Despite how hard casting Elle was, these side-by-sides shared by the former series star have me feeling pretty confident that Minetree is right for the part and ready to pull it off. For now, the first-look comparisons are doing exactly what they should. They make Elle feel connected to the original without turning it into a wax museum version of Legally Blonde. The pink is there. The charm is there. The legal jargon may not be far behind.

To say that I'm a fan of Legally Blonde would be an understatement. I've adored the 2001 movie since its release, so there was no question about me watching Prime Video's upcoming series, Elle, with my Prime subscription when it arrives on the 2026 TV schedule. Watching the newly released teaser trailer for the show has me extra excited.

See, I'll just rip the dating-my-self bandaid off right now and say that I was a '90s teen myself. More the flannel-wearing kind than pink-wearing kind, but that's just fine here, since this new series clearly showcases both edges of that style spectrum. Regardless, as much as I'm loving this first look at the new show, I think it's only right to bring up the topic of the plot, and how it might change the way we view the plot of the original movie.

My first reaction to the trailer was to obsess over all of the mid-'90s nostalgia on display as we're introduced to Lexi Minitree's Elle Woods, a '90s Los Angeles teen bound for Seattle with her parents. From the pager to her dazzling platform wedges, to Bruiser's preppy Lacoste get-up, I'm here for all of it! After the glow of grunge being the new pink began to wear off though, the topic of the plot came up.

As the teaser implies, Elle is a fish-out-of-water story, wherein our heroine is forced to leave Bel Air with her parents to move to Seattle for her dad's job. While '90s Seattle would be an ideal scene for many teens of the era, it's not at all Elle's vibe, and we're left to wonder how she's going to fit in. Sound familiar?

To be clear, I'm excited to see how Elle rises to this challenge, as we know she's capable of adapting to her surroundings, while maintaining that pink, bejeweled aura we know and love about her. I also get why it's impossible to completely ignore the parallels between the original movie, where Elle is a fish-out-of-water in Boston while attending Harvard Law School in order to try to win back her boyfriend. I think it's valid to be concerned about this story being told having the potential to cheapen the movie's story if it doesn't connect in the right way.

After all, Elle is introduced to us in the original movie as someone we assumed had always surrounded herself with people who dress similarly and are into the same things that she is. Going to Harvard was completely new territory for her, or so we thought. The growth we see Elle have throughout the movie is one of the things that makes it so charming and uplifting. If this new show is aiming for the same kind of story, it's going to have to walk a fine line between building an interesting plot for Elle in this part of her timeline and also, presumably, making sure it still lines up with the start of the 2001 movie.

I'm prepared to see this series take some liberties with the character and plot in order to make the show work, and hopefully create some stakes. I'm both curious and excited to see how it works, and optimistic that, when the show premieres on Prime Video on July 1, 2026, Elle will be a lot of fun (I'm also hoping Elle has as many great quotes as Legally Blonde does!). I just hope it doesn't end up changing my views of Elle from the movie, at least not in a negative way.

James Van Der Beek tragically died on February 11; however, he still has a project that will be premiering on the 2026 TV schedule, and that show is the Legally Blonde prequel, Elle. So, in honor of her colleague, Reese Witherspoon paid a “devastated” tribute to the late star of the series she’s executive producing.

News of the Dawson’s Creek actor’s passing came after a long battle with Stage 3 colorectal cancer. The news of his death was announced on his Instagram, and immediately, a flood of loving comments and tributes came in. This included one from Reese Witherspoon, as she took to her Instagram story to repost the news and share a tribute. She wrote:

Along with these touching and tragic words, The Morning Show star also reposted the following video that Van Der Beek had uploaded to his Instagram in March of 2025:

The video, which you can watch above, shows the actor talking about the last year of his life and his battle with cancer. He was candid about how hard the year had been, and he explained that he realized he was “worthy of God’s love, simply because [he exists].” And with that in mind, he realized he was worthy of his own love. Over on Witherspoon’s IG story, she commented “Beautiful” over the video.

Adding to the love and support Witherspoon has shown on social media during this tragic moment, she also left the following comment on the Instagram post that announced Van Der Beek’s passing:

Now, all this comes in the months leading up to the release of Elle, the Legally Blonde prequel series. The show, which will be available with an Amazon Prime subscription starting July 1, is being executive-produced by the actress who originated the role of Elle Woods. It will follow her iconic character through high school before her days at Harvard Law, and the younger version of Elle will be played by Lexi Minetree.

Van Der Beek will play Dean Wilson in Elle. He’s a mayoral candidate for the city as well as the school district superintendent. So, it sounds like he has a major part to play in the prequel series.

While Elle will be Van Der Beek’s final on-screen role, it is not his only project that will come out after his death. This other project is a film called The Gates, and it will be released on the 2026 movie schedule on March 13. Directed by John Burr, the flick also stars Mason Gooding, Algee Smith and Keith Powers, with Van Der Beek set to play a character named Jacob.

So, as we mourn the loss of this wonderful actor, thankfully, he still has some exciting work to look forward to. Specifically, if you’d like to see the project he worked on with Reese Witherspoon, which will also serve as his final on-screen role, you can start streaming Elle on July 1.

Hailey Bieber’s big Rhode sale comes at a pretty eventful time in the Biebers’ lives. Legal dramas, thrillers, and comedies have been part of Hollywood since the very beginning. Whether it's classic shows like L.A. Law and Ally McBeal, or movies like A Time To Kill and To Kill A Mockingbird, there is every kind of movie about the law, and the lawyers who practice it.

L.A. Law

Admit it, you can hear that saxophone intro as the trunk slams on the Mercedes that opened every episode of L.A. Law for eight seasons from 1986 until 1994. It was one of the anchors of NBC's legendary Thursday nights in that era. It was the only drama in the lineup, and for those of us who grew up at the time, it was the perfect way to end the evening.

A Time To Kill

Matthew McConaughey's first movie role came as a cast member of the legendary Dazed and Confused, where he was responsible for some classic lines. He really became a more rounded movie star with his starring turn in A Time To Kill, with Samuel L. Jackson. McConaughey plays a lawyer defending Jackson's character for what audiences see as a justified murder.

Ally McBeal

The legal world has always been a rich area for comedy. I'm not going to make any comments about lawyers here... But Ally McBeal helped define late '90s TV and made stars of Calista Flockhart, Jane Krakowski, and Portia de Rossi.

Juror #2

Lawyers aren't always the focus of legal dramas. Sometimes, movies are about the jury, like the appropriately named Juror #2, directed by Clint Eastwood. Nicholas Hoult plays a juror who quickly learns he may actually be responsible for the death of the person the man on trial is accused of murdering. It's an intense movie, to say the least.

Perry Mason

In the early days of television, one of the most popular and longest-running shows was Perry Mason. It proved so enduring that Raymond Burr, who starred as the titular attorney, returned to play the role in more than two dozen TV movies right up until just before his death in 1993. Perry Mason set the template of "case of the week" shows that followed it.

A Few Good Men

Years before JAG made the Navy's Judge Advocate General's Corps a staple on TV, the Aaron Sorkin-penned, Rob Reiner-directed classic A Few Good Men brought audiences into the world of military political thrillers. Tom Cruise plays a cocky but inexperienced officer defending two Marines accused of murder in this amazing movie with amazing performances all around, especially Jack Nicholson.

My Cousin Vinny

Marisa Tomai might have won an Oscar for My Cousin Vinny, but she's hardly the only amazing performance in this fish out of water legal comedy starring Joe Pesci as a New York lawyer...well, almost lawyer... who travels to a small town in Alabama to defend his nephew and his nephews friend, who are charged with murder. It's a hilarious classic.

Legally Blonde

You knew we had to include the beloved Legally Blonde on this list. It's the movie that really made Reese Witherspoon an A-list star and spawned multiple sequels, a musical, and a streaming TV show on Prime. The law in it may be dubious, but the comedy is not.

Marshall

2017's Marshall is the origin story of a real-life superhero, future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. The film, starring Chadwick Boseman as Marshall, tells the story of an early case in the legend's career when he defended an innocent man, played by Sterling K. Brown, accused of murder. It's a movie that doesn't often get mentioned, but it should because it's as powerful as it sounds.

To Kill A Mockingbird

One of the true American classics of both literature and cinema is To Kill A Mockingbird. The movie, based on the book by Harper Lee, stars Gregory Peck as the single father and lawyer Atticus Finch, who defends a man accused of assault. It's hard to understate how important both the book and movie are to millions of people.

Suits

Of course, these days, Suits is maybe most famous for being the Duchess of Sussex's greatest success on screen. Meghan Markle is part of a great cast of this legal drama that first became a hit on the USA network before finding a second life years later on Netflix, when its renewed popularity spawned a spinoff, Suits LA, on the streamer.

The Firm

The Firm is about a different kind of practice than most legal thrillers. There aren't any courtrooms or dramatic moments deposing witnesses; instead, it's about a slimier side of the law. Tom Cruise plays a young lawyer fresh out of law school who unwittingly goes to work for a mobbed-up law firm. Like others on this list, it's based on a John Grisham book, one of his first.

Amistad

One of Steven Spielberg's more under-appreciated movies has to be Amistad, about the trial of a group of enslaved men accused of murder on the high seas. It features a ton of wonderful performances, including Anthony Hopkins in the role of former President John Quincy Adams, who helped defend the men in this true story.

Boston Legal

The Practice was a more serious legal drama on ABC in the late '90s, but its spinoff, Boston Legal, mixed in a ton more humor. James Spader and William Shatner both play lawyers in the show, and both are brilliant in their roles. It had some very serious moments, and some completely over-the-top ridiculous ones, too. It was a great blend of drama and humor. It's a rare example of a spinoff meeting and maybe exceeding its predecessor.

Erin Brockovich

Julia Roberts' character, the titular Erin Brockovich, is a real person, though she wasn't a lawyer. That doesn't mean she didn't understand the law, though, nor was she unwilling to fight for those that couldn't get anyone else to help.

Law & Order

Of course, we had to include Law & Order. The enduring show has run for more than two dozen seasons over the years, though not all consecutively. We'll just include all its various spinoffs here; otherwise, we'd only be able to half the list we have here with all the different versions over the years. And you can admit it, you're humming the theme song right now.

Better Call Saul

There are a handful of TV spinoffs on this list, and one is Better Call Saul, which, of course, was spun off of Breaking Bad. The immensely popular show was critically lauded, but somehow the Bob Odenkirk-led drama never won an Emmy, which is bonkers.

The Rainmaker

John Grisham has written a ton of books that have been adapted into movies, and one of the best of those adaptations is the underrated The Rainmaker, starring Matt Damon as a young lawyer suing an insurance company in a true David v. Goliath plot. It's one of Francis Ford Copolla's most overlooked movies.

How to Get Away with Murder

Shonda Rhimes has developed everything from medical dramas (Grey's Anatomy) to political thrillers (Scandal), so of course, she's got a legal drama under her belt with How to Get Away with Murder. It's unique because it blends law school with law practice, and it definitely benefits from the wonderful performance by Viola Davis in the starring role.

Matlock

Right there with Perry Mason as one of the most famous TV lawyers of all time is Andy Griffith's Matlock in the show of the same name. Sure, it's been the butt of jokes on The Simpsons for years, but the show was truly beloved when it aired and even spawned a reboot recently on CBS.

Philadelphia

One movie that people love, but can only watch once because it is so heavy, is Philadelphia, starring Denzel Washington as a lawyer suing on behalf of another lawyer who was let go from his law firm after contracting AIDS. It was one of the first movies to ever confront the epidemic and its effects directly, and it's an amazing and heartbreaking legal drama.

12 Angry Men

12 Angry Men, from legendary director Sidney Lumet, is considered one of the best movies ever made, to say nothing of one of the best legal dramas ever. It's a power takedown of McCarthyism at the height of the Red Scare in 1957, and it's a fearless movie in that regard. The cast is led by Henry Fonda and includes actors like Jack Klugman, Jack Warden, Ed Begley, Sr., and Martin Balsam as the jury foreman.

Anatomy Of A Fall

The Best Picture-nominated Anatomy Of A Fall gives audiences a peek into the legal system in France, which is very different from most of the entries on this list. The movie is set around a mysterious death that could be murder. It's a powerful and engaging movie that holds the viewer's attention for every second of the film.

Night Court

If you grew up watching TV in the 1980s, there is little doubt that Night Court on NBC was a favorite sitcom. The cast became legendary, winning all kinds of Emmys and other awards. The plot, about the goings on of a court in New York City, was not secondary to the characters, either, as every episode had some over-the-top legal moments, few of which were realistic but most of which were hilarious.

The Lincoln Lawyer

Television producer David E. Kelly has a great history of developing legal dramas for TV, which include Ally McBeal, The Practice, and Boston Legal. His fourth on that list is The Lincoln Lawyer, based on a book by Michael Connelly called The Brass Verdict about a lawyer who literally practices law out of his car, a Lincoln. The first book in the same series was adapted into a movie starring Matthew McConaughey in 2011.

The Good Wife

The parade of guest stars that appeared in episodes of The Good Wife is long and distinguished, but that isn't all the show is remembered for. Unlike most legal TV shows, the show often had long story arcs over multiple episodes. It made the show unique and insanely bingeable.

The Pelican Brief

The Pelican Brief is John Grisham's third book, and the second to be adapted into a movie (behind The Firm). Like most of Grisham's stories, it's fast-paced and entertaining, but it's a pretty different story from The Firm or A Time To Kill (Grisham's first novel). It almost has the vibe of a spy thriller as much as a legal thriller. Julia Roberts' career was really exploding at the time, as was Denzel Washington's, so the movie was almost guaranteed to be a hit, and it was.

Legal Eagles

1996's Legal Eagles is unique on this list in that it is a rom-com as much as it is a legal movie. There aren't all that many movies that cross those genres, and while the '80s movie does feel a little dated, it is buoyed by two solid performances from Debra Winger and Robert Redford, and some snappy directing from Ivan Reitman.

The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story

Anyone alive in 1995 remembers the O.J. Simpson murder trial all too well. It was literally inescapable. In a way, it's surprising that it took more than 20 years for a movie (or, in this case, a mini-series) to be made about it. It was worth the wait, though, as the Ryan Murphy-produced show was gripping, despite the fact that everyone knew how it was going to end. It also has a fantastic ensemble cast.

A Civil Action

1998's A Civil Action was one of the first legal movies to tackle a civil litigation against a big company. Based on the true story of a lawyer named Jan Schlichtmann (John Travolta), the movie follows a class action lawsuit against two companies accused of contaminating groundwater, causing widespread cases of cancer. While it is very much a "'90s" movie, and it didn't do all that well at the box office, it's got some solid performances by a slew of great actors.

From The Hip

We had to include this oft-forgotten classic comedy that we think is very underrated. From The Hip features a hilarious performance from Judd Nelson as a young lawyer trying his first case and not understanding (or caring about) the rules of the court. Not the best movie on this list, but a fun deep cut if you've seen all the others.

The Client

Another great legal drama based on a book by John Grisham is The Client, starring Susan Sarandon, who works on behalf of an 11-year-old who is a witness in a mob case. Brad Renfro, who is an actor who died tragically before turning 40, plays the boy in a scene-stealing performance.

I genuinely don't know how I didn't realize this years ago, but something finally clicked in my brain about Legally Blonde that didn't before, and I have to talk about it.

When it comes to some of the most iconic films of the 2000s, Legally Blonde is very high on that list. Whether it's the performance from Reese Witherspoon, the female empowerment, or just the pure comedic gold that comes from the line delivery, the movie is epic.

But now, after rewatching it (again) for the first time in ages, something unlocked in my brain about the love story and why I genuinely think it's one of the best. I never realized it as a kid, but I have to talk about it now.

I've Always Loved The Movie With All My Heart

I mean that in the purest way possible, because Legally Blonde actually did change me.

Let me be honest with you. Before college and back in the early days of high school, I didn't really know how to be a girl. I was born a girl, dressed like a girl, but I was just so awkward. For years, I didn't like many of the girly things because I didn't think I deserved them and felt unpretty. I felt that if I even tried to do those things, I would end up looking foolish.

Then I saw Legally Blonde as a young, impressionable teenager. While Elle is essentially the most stereotypically beautiful girl you could ever expect, it wasn't that which inspired me to start acting differently and embracing my femininity – it was her confidence.

After that, I started to act like her by embracing who I was and going out of my way to try things I never had before. Now, more than a decade later, I am much more comfortable in my skin and have learned a great deal about myself, all thanks to watching this movie as a kid. She inspired me to become a better version of myself and to always fight for what I wanted, and I could never be more thankful for that.

However, there's one aspect I didn't understand until now that suddenly clicked in my mid-twenties brain – and that was why Emmett is such a fantastic boyfriend.

But I Realized Why Emmett Is Such An Amazing Boyfriend – Because He Doesn't Get In Elle's Way

Look, there are plenty of great rom-coms out there that truly take the cake and have become iconic. But I'm going to be honest and say most of them have some leading men with, ah…questionable moral values.

I don't mind a morally grey man – heck, they're basically the love interests of many upcoming book-to-screen adaptations – when it comes to something like this, I'd really prefer someone who hypes up the leading lady rather than dragging her down.

Now, suddenly, years later, that's what I realized – that Emmett is the perfect example of that.

Elle's entire mission going to Harvard was to win back Warren, someone who was not deserving of her whatsoever, but of course, by the end of the film, she realizes what a jerk he is and how she wants to pave her own way with her abilities as a skilled lawyer, and without him.

Emmett is the perfect counterpart to her. Elle is like a hurricane in a way – terrifyingly beautiful and powerful in her ability to pave her path. She does what she has to do to succeed, buying a new computer, studying for hours, and building connections, all to prove that she is worth far more than what anyone thinks about her.

He is like that eye of the storm – this sort of calming presence. He doesn't create any drama, he isn't toxic in any way, shape, or form, and he's honestly the perfect person for her to talk to when she's feeling stressed or down, as we see throughout the film (aside from her conversations with Jennifer Coolidge in her hilarious performance).

He's perfect because he doesn't stand out – he walks alongside her. He doesn't steal her spotlight – he shines it right down where she stands and more.

He Supports Her Through and Through, Right From The Beginning

Even from the very beginning of the movie, before there is even a hint of feelings between these two, he helps her out and stands by her.

That first day, when he sees her crying after that class where she is embarrassed, he offers her advice on her teachers. That is literally so kind and shows the type of person he is.

To him, this is a total stranger. He could have been like every other person at Harvard and judged her for her clothing choices or attitude, but he decided to give her the advice she desperately needed, all with a smile. That's the kind of person that Elle needs – and the type of movie boyfriend that I can't help but love.

And In The End, It's Not Some Gushy Romance – It's About Him Being Her Biggest Fan

This is my favorite part – the end of Legally Blonde isn't about how Elle finds a better guy – it's about her discovering a better version of herself, and Emmett is just there to be her cheerleader.

She's become Valedictorian, proving everyone wrong. She's succeeded in ways that she couldn't have even imagined. The end credits showcase all those accomplishments before revealing that she and Emmett have been dating and he's planning to propose that night. Just a few simple words that sum up their relationship.

They don't need all the drama because they work. He loves her for who she is and also for who she's become – and he's been the perfect steady companion for her hardworking self. I can't help but love it.

If Legally Blonde 3 Ever Happens, I Truly Hope That They're Still An Item

I'm curious about the current status of Legally Blonde 3 and if it will ever be released. We've been moving in that direction a bit more with the new Elle TV show on Amazon Prime, and there is interest in the film, but nothing new has been released about it.

Even so, I hope that if it does happen, Luke Wilson returns as Emmett for a third time. I know I've said this before, but these two are actually the epitome of goals. I would be absolutely heartbroken if, for some reason, they weren't together in a third film.

Gosh, now I have to rank all the movie boyfriends out there by how much they compare to Emmett. It's time to start another movie marathon.

College is often the most fun four years in a young person's life. Sometimes it's even more than four years. It's that time in life that is between high school and living under your parents' rules, and adulthood, when you have to live under society's rules. It's a brief interregnum when the rules are loosened and the party is on.

There are a lot of great college movies out there reflecting this. Classics like Animal House, The Waterboy, Back To School, and many others. This list is dedicated to all those wonderful movies that make us laugh and reminisce about our own time in college.

National Lampoon's Animal House

National Lampoon's Animal House is the peak of the genre. Set in the '50s, but with a very 1970s sensibility, everything about the movie is pretty much perfect. The performances, especially from John Belushi, are uniformly brilliant. The writing is hilarious, and the story is actually pretty coherent, which isn't always the case in movies like this. It also happens to be one of the most quotable movies ever.

Back To School

If you want to talk about quotable movies, few are as great as Back to School. Rodney Dangerfield was always at his best when he was just allowed to be himself and crack his one-liners like he did in his stand-up act. Thornton Melon is a perfect character for that, and a senior citizen returning to college is both a dream and a nightmare for almost everyone who loved college. We can't all be great divers, though.

Real Genius

How much fun would it blow up a house using lasers and a huge vat of popcorn? That's one of the things Real Genius set out to show, and wow, does it look fun! Val Kilmer is amazing in this nerdy, hilarious movie from the '80s that hits all the high notes of being a partying nerd in college.

PCU

PCU is most remembered for being the movie that helped really launch the careers of Jeremy Piven and Jon Favreau. It's a pretty funny mockery of college life in the '90s, that while it's pretty sophomoric and ridiculous, so is college in many ways. Frisbees, protests, obnoxious rich kids in loafers, and angry jocks all appear here, making it a nice, well-rounded satire

Everybody Wants Some!!

The "spiritual sequel" to the classic high school movie Dazed And Confused, Everybody Wants Some!! doesn't quite reach the heights of Richard Linklater's classic '90s movies about the 1970s, but it's still a really funny movie. It's one of many that highlight athletes in college and nails that life perfectly.

School Daze

It's not surprising that a young Spike Lee looked to college for inspiration, having graduated from NYU not too many years before making School Daze. It's only his second movie, and while it's clear he hasn't quite found his true voice yet (that would come a year later in Do The Right Thing), Lee is really gaining confidence as a director and the movie is wild. It's far from perfect, but it's really funny.

Old School

Old School answers the question, "What if you could go back to college just for the parties?" Everyone dreams, at least a little bit, about reliving those old glories at the frat house, chugging beer and streaking the quad. It's one of Will Ferrell's best comedic performances, amongst many. It's hard not to have some sympathy for Snoop Dogg though.

Van Wilder

Ryan Reynolds become a star after Van Wilder and he's so good in it, it took him years to shake the typecasting. It's Animal House for a new generations and while some people (usually from an older generation) simply can't get into it, Van Wilder - and Reynolds - are both brilliant.

Revenge Of The Nerds

We can talk about how Revenge of the Nerds needs to be canceled for a number of reasons, like the racism and the assaults, but at the time, it was a stone-cold classic. You can't excuse just how genuinely offensive it is by today's more enlightened standards, you also can't ignore how funny it was in its day.

Legally Blonde

Ok, so technically Legally Blonde is mostly about law school, not undergrad, but the movie starts with Reese Witherspoon as a vapid undergrad sorority girl who is spurred to action by a dopey boyfriend who dumps her. So it is a little about college. Besides, there aren't a lot of movies about law school, either.

The Waterboy

College sports, especially football, and especially in the South, are a huge deal. There aren't actually that many comedies about it, unless you count the unintentional comedy of The Program. The Waterboy isn't Adam Sandler's best movie, but everyone can admit that it has its moments, and any movie with Henry Winkler as a hapless football coach has to be good on some level.

Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle

Road trips are an important rite of passage in college and so it's no surprise that there are a bunch of movies about them. Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle may have the most ridiculous reason for the road trip, as two guys get a little too high a decide they must have White Castle. It's not about the destination, though; it's the friends they meet along the way (like Neil Patrick Harris) that make the trip so memorable.

The Sure Thing

The Sure Thing is another road trip movie, this one with a pretty standard purpose: to meet a girl on spring break. John Cusack is as charming and as cool as ever in this one, and while almost none of it happens on a campus, neither are a lot of anyone's best memories of their college years.

Pitch Perfect

In the 2000s, glee clubs and singing groups became all the rage in high school and college. So it makes sense that a movie like Pitch Perfect would become one of the most beloved comedies of the decade. It features a stacked cast including Elizabeth Banks, Rebel Wilson, Anna Kendrick, and more, and it's just as funny as any of the classics from previous decades.

Road Trip

Tom Green is amazing in Road Trip as one of the "kids" who has been in college for waaaaaay too long. He basically plays the unreliable narrator, telling prospective students just how crazy college can get when he tells them about a road trip some older students experienced. It's raunchy and ridiculous, and gut-bustlingly funny.

Dear White People

Dear White People is as serious as it is funny, making it both a proper critique of "white" colleges and a biting satire of them. There aren't a lot of comedies telling the stories of African-Americans in college, and this critically acclaimed movie should have inspired more, because it's so good.

The Freshman

1990's The Freshman is not really remembered for being a college movie, but it is. Remember, Matthew Broderick's character is trying to survive in a very expensive city (New York) at a very expensive university (NYU). Of course, it's best remembered for Marlon Brando satirizing his Godfather character, but at it's heart, it's still a college movie.

Oxford Blues

There is nothing more "'80s" than a movie about a guy who scams his way into one of the most prestigious universities in the world just to meet a girl. Rob Lowe stars as a guy who does just that in Oxford Blues. He meets the girl, chugs some beer, and becomes an elite rower in this classic from 1984.

The Rules of Attraction

Any movie based on a Bret Easton Ellis novel is going to be pretty funny and very dark. The Rules of Attraction is both to the nth degree. It's not as popular as some of the other movies based on Ellis novels, like Less Than Zero and American Psycho, but it has all the satire that the author is known for is and it's a much funnier movie than most remember it being.

Drumline

2002's coming-of-age comedy Drumline was only a minor hit at the time, but it's easy to see why so many members of the cast, including star Nick Cannon, Zoe Saldana, and Orlando Jones, became stars later. It's a rare movie in the genre that takes place on an HBCU, and if you've never seen it, you need to see it soon!

22 Jump Street

While it's not as good as 21 Jump Street, the sequel, of course called 22 Jump Street, does have some occasional laughs thanks to Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill.

Happy Death Day

Comedic horror movies rarely work for me, but Happy Death Day defies that. It's genuinely funny, and pretty darn scary too! Sure, it's dark, but that a feature and while it didn't have to be in college, it does benefit from the setting.

Necessary Roughness

Necessary Roughness is a completely ridiculous movie, and it's far from the best on this list, but it is a movie that is very much of its time. It's funny, though not as funny as some of the classics. It does feature a great cast, and it definitely has its moments, but any movie about big-time college football could have been so much funnier.

Life Of The Party

Comedies about adults going back to college aren't unique. What makes Life of the Party unique is one person: Melissa McCarthy. She is a one-woman tour de force in this one and brings all of what makes her so funny to the role. It's over the top and insane, just how you want a movie from this genre to be.

Neighbors

Neighbors is unique on this list because it's not from the perspective of the college kids, but from the hapless neighbors who have to deal with a bunch of idiots. It sounds like a nightmare for any adult, because it is, but it's also a riot.

Horse Feathers

Movies making light of college life go back way further than you may realize. All the way back to the Marx Brothers and their classic, Horsefeathers in 1932. It's kind of amazing how similar the themes are surrounding that most American piece of campus life, the college football game.

Accepted

Admittedly, Accepted is about going to a fake college, but there are plenty of people who would call their school a fake one on some level, too, right? The 2006 movie highlights the pressures so many feel to get into college, and for that alone, it belongs on this list.

American Pie 2

There isn't a ton to write about here. American Pie 2 is a fairly straightforward sequel to the high school classic. It's not as funny as the original, but it has its moments, for sure. The characters are all pretty one-dimensional, but so are most college kids, if we're being honest.

Adventureland

Ok, Ok, this one is a bit of a stretch, but first jobs out of college are as much a rite of passage as college itself. That's especially true of a job whose only purpose is to save money for the trip of a lifetime. Your first "adult" love falls into those rites as well, as this movie highlights.

Wonder Boys

There are, of course, movies that really focus on the "other side" of college life, that of the professors. Wonder Boys is one of the best, in that regard. Michael Douglas stars in this film, based on the Michael Chabon book of the same name. It may not have been a hit, but as the 81% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes proves, it's worth checking out.

Admission

Another movie on the list from the professor's point of view - or at least the administration's point of view - is the Tina Fey-led Admission. It's about exactly what you expect. Fey stars as an admissions officer at Princeton who falls in love with a high school college counselor played by Paul Rudd. It's a pretty textbook rom-com that is cute and funny, and the charming cast makes it worthwhile.

Monsters University

Even Pixar can get in on the fun here with their hit animated comedy about college life...er... at least the college life of monsters in Monsters University!

Grosse Pointe Garden Society arrived in the 2025 TV schedule to bring some murder mystery to NBC's Sunday nights, and the latest episode dropped a big clue about the identity of the deceased – a.k.a. "Quiche." That, or the drama dropped a major red herring to thicken the plot that much more as episodes continue airing weekly and streaming with a Peacock subscription. One character who we know was not killed and buried in a flowerbed by Birdie (Melissa Fumero), Catherine (Aja Naomi King), Brett (Ben Rappaport), and Alice (AnnaSophia Robb) is Joel, played by Legally Blonde alum Matthew Davis.

Davis spoke with CinemaBlend about working heavily with the Brooklyn Nine-NIne and Night Court vet, with a callback to when he filmed Legally Blonde with Reese Witherspoon. Birdie and Joel have been flirting in the present of Grosse Pointe Garden Society, while flash-forwards show that they've gotten hot and heavy by the time the foursome commits their murder. The situation is only complicated by the fact that Joel is stepfather to Birdie's biological son, who she gave up for adoption years prior... and he also happens to be a cop.

Since most of Matthew Davis' scenes in his first four episodes as part of the Grosse Pointe Garden Society cast were opposite Melissa Fumero, I had to ask the Legacies alum: did he have a chemistry read with the Night Court guest star before landing the role? He responded:

Davis may not have been a fan of Fumero from her Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Blockbuster, or One Life to Live days, but he's clearly become a fan since getting to work with her on Grosse Pointe Garden Society. In fact, he went on to reflect on filming Joel and Birdie's first big interactions of the show:

Talk about high praise for Melissa Fumero as a scene partner! And honestly, for as much as Birdie and Elle Woods definitely aren't interchangeable, the two characters have some similar energy. I'm confident that the plot of Legally Blonde 3 wouldn't have involved any criminal shenanigans quite like those in Grosse Pointe Garden Society Season 1, but I can easily see where Matt Davis is coming from.

The former Vampire Diaries actor went on to cite the Legally Blonde scene he'd filmed with Reese Witherspoon that he was flashing back to while working with Melissa Fumero, and it's arguably one of the most memorable from 2001 comedy: Warner and Elle's breakup. He shared:

Fans of the cast of Legally Blonde likely aren't surprised to learn that Matt Davis was "blown away" by Reese Witherspoon's early work as Elle Woods. He went on to share how her "presence" impacted him on set for that film, and why Melissa Fumero brought back that same feeling on set more than two decades later:

There are still more questions than answers about the dead body on Grosse Pointe Garden Society, but given that Joel is alive and well in the aftermath to help Birdie cover up the murder, we at least know that he's not the victim. If the promo is any indication, Joel and Birdie's relationship is about to heat up in the present. Take a look!

During a talk show appearance, Witherspoon actually revealed just how many Jimmy Choos she negotiated to keep from the film. Jennifer Aniston and Julie Andrews were present when the information was divulged, and their faces were just priceless!

Reese Witherspoon has proven time and time again that Elle Woods has not left her heart. We’ve seen her rock the iconic bedazzled bikini when announcing Legally Blonde 3 and go pink with a fall coat that would make the Harvard Law student proud. Turns out that The Morning Show actress once revealed on The Graham Norton Show that she got to keep Elle Woods' entire wardrobe. To say that’s a lot of shoes would be an understatement! Now, I’m curious how big that walk-in closet is. While the reveal of that exact number is surprising, it's the the looks on Jennifer Aniston and Julie Andrews’ faces that really make this moment so great. I can’t say I blame them, considering that number of footwear can fit an entire boutique. See their expressions (which I can't stop replaying) down below:

It's particularly humorous to see Dame Julie Andrews lose composure for a brief second. The actress rarely ever seems rattled in public, so it's definitely refreshing to see that here. And, of course, Jennifer Aniston's expression is perfect as well.

There's a lot to appreciate about Elle Woods and, while her brains are certainly among those attributes, her style is also A+. The really snazzy dresser of a character has an outfit for every occasion, with matching accessories and hairstyles to go with it. Those fits included pink power suits, chic berets, and even a bunny costume that would make Regina George jealous. With so many fashion ensembles, you can understand why Reese Witherspoon needed to be the proud owner of those costumes.

Since Legally Blonde has become a cultural touchstone, many fans have since been inspired to dress up like Elle Woods, too. The early 2000s hit produces hot Halloween costume ideas, as Elle-inspired rectangular sunglasses, purses, coats and skirts are still all the rage.

Even a number of celebrities appreciate Elle Woods. Florence Pugh went all pink on LB's 20th anniversary. Also, Kerry Washington recreated the infamous pool scene while wearing a blue bedazzled bikini. Even Mindy Kaling, who's co-writing the third entry in the legal comedy franchise, followed suit (pardon the pun) with her own pool post.

Considering that Reese Witherspoon owns 77 of her character’s shoes, I’d say that’s enough footwear to last the Sweet Home Alabama star for a lifetime. Then again, with the actress’s love of fashion, I wouldn’t be surprised if she continued to fill her closet with other costumes from her movies. I'm sure Jennifer Aniston and Julie Andrews would be among those surprised if she did.

Madonna - Desperately Seeking Susan

Just as director Susan Seidelman’s Desperately Seeking Susan put Madonna on the map as an actor, the pop music legend helped land her character’s cat eye sunglasses in movie history. We’ve been waiting for a while to find out who would be playing the younger version of our favorite Harvard Law student. Now, we know Lexi Minetree will be filling the pink shoes created by Reese Witherspoon. They’re both thrilled about it too, as the producer posted this adorable video on her Instagram to announce the news:

I’m sorry but the squeals throughout? The pink outfit? The clips of her self-tape that show her making Elle’s iconic Harvard application video? All point to the fact that Minetree seems like a perfect fit for Elle Woods!

As Reese Witherspoon said herself:

They do seem very similar, and Minetree appears to have what it takes to play this character who made Legally Blonde one of the best movies of the 2000s.

Witherspoon has been open about how hard casting Elle has been, saying that it was difficult to choose someone, because the pool of actresses was so strong. So, between this video that clearly shows her younger counterpart’s enthusiasm about Elle and the knowledge of how competitive the auditions seemed to be, I’m convinced they’ve picked the perfect person.

The passionate “Me!” toward the end of the clip helped solidify it for me too. Elle’s confidence and self-worth are two of her most admirable qualities, and I love that Minetree appears to have them herself. Now, I can’t wait to see them translated onto the screen as she plays the high school version of this beloved character.

Don’t get me wrong, playing Elle Woods is a tall order. Legally Blonde is easily one of Reese Witherspoon’s best movies, and both the actress and her character have been icons for decades. So, the bar is high. However, I think Lexi Minetree is up for the challenge.

Up to this point, the young performer has only appeared in shorts as well as an episode of Law & Order: SVU. So, this series will mark her biggest break yet, and she looks like she’s already got her pink out and is ready for it.

At the moment, we’re still a long way away from being able to watch Elle with an Amazon Prime subscription. However, you can stream Legally Blonde in the same place right now. That way, you can study Reese Witherspoon’s performance, and get ready for Minetree’s which I’m sure will radiate “What, like it’s hard?” energy.

I’m so thrilled that Witherspoon is on the decision because who knows the iconic character better than her? With being in the thick of the job, the actress-film producer did open up about the tough part of picking who would play Elle and carry on the pink and scented legacy of one of Witherspoon’s best movies.

​​As the Cruel Intentions actress and Will Ferrell promoted their new movie, You’re Cordially Invited–which premiered on our 2025 movie schedule at the end of January–she shared about the new Prime series, Elle. While what we know about the Legally Blonde series is still slim, the OG Miss Woods shared with People what the casting process has been like for finding a fitting doppelgänger for the show. Via the page’s Instagram, Witherspoon teased that she was excited about the process of finding the titular title character, pre-Harvard days, saying:

And while it has been a fun time for the Big Little Lies alum, she got real about the more difficult and unexpected parts. She noted that while all the young actresses are extremely talented and a joy to see, the elimination process has been the toughest part of the coming show. She shared:

The process seems like it has Witherspoon completely enamored with the coming series. Between her relishing a room full of Elle Woods energy to finding the girl that could bring the Legally Blonde world into its newest era, the Sing alum seems up for the job, regardless of the tough calls.

And with no Mindy Kaling's Legally Blonde 3 in sight, this prequel series sounds excellent, because the fans (like me), will gladly accept the fabulous lawyer at any age. Thankfully, it does sound like Kaling and crew is taking their time with LB3 to honor the character and franchise in this new stage of Woods’ life.

Here’s hoping casting and filming go well (for both productions) and we can expect to see Elle on the back half of our 2025 TV schedule! The fans know, me included, that Reese Witherspoon being in on all the Legally Blonde decisions is everything for the world, and her pick for the coming iteration, although probably tough, will be the right one.

Since it’s become an iconic movie, we’ve seen a sequel and musical adaptation, and now a prequel series is being made. With the search on for the teen Elle Woods, Witherspoon has shared the origin of the upcoming streaming show, and Jenna Ortega actually has something to do with it.

Reese Witherspoon has teamed up with Will Ferrell for a new comedy called You’re Cordially Invited. While promoting the new movie that fans can watch with an Amazon Prime subscription starting Friday, she said this about the Elle TV show:

Netflix’s Wednesday was a massive phenomenon when Season 1 came out in 2022. To this day, the series remains the most-watched debut for a Netflix original TV show. When Reese Witherspoon was on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she even shared that watching the series inspired her to imagine Elle Woods in high school and want to build a new project around it.

The series will have Elle Woods rocking pink and acing her classes in the 1990s. Elle’s showrunner is Laura Kittrell, who produced over 30 episodes of Insecure, and Witherspoon is producing the series under her Hello Sunshine production team. Currently, the show is trying to cast the younger Elle Woods. Witherspoon shared her reaction to watching audition tapes for the star of Elle with these words:

Sounds like there’s a lot of competition out there when it comes to finding the next Elle Woods, and I bet they had a similar good problem while casting Wednesday too. Of course, much of the internet has turned to Witherspoon’s lookalike daughter when fan-casting, but it sounds like she is really trying to exhaust every option and is going to have a hard time choosing her successor.

The Big Little Lies star said she’s watched “so many” audition tapes already, and it’s been “so fun” to see all the young talent out there. When the actress was up for Legally Blonde, she apparently had tight competition with her talented peers like Charlize Theron, Gwyneth Paltrow, Alicia Silverstone, Katherine Heigl, Milla Jovovich, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Christina Applegate all reportedly in consideration for the role.

It’s tough to imagine who will follow Reese Witherspoon given her amazing legacy as Elle Woods, but if anyone is going to find the next Elle Woods, it’s her! And I'm sure that whoever lands the role will be perfect, just like how Jenna Ortega was the perfect successor for Christina Ricci.

But years later, that very role returned to haunt her unexpectedly: a real-life Beverly Hills courtroom. During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, the Cruel Intentions star hilariously recounted how playing a bubbly, fashion-savvy law student—a plot that’s delightfully absurd when you say it out loud—led to an awkward but unforgettable experience when she was called for jury duty.

While Mindy Kaling’s long-awaited Legally Blonde 3 seems on pause, the story of everyone’s favorite blonde lawyer continues in a new way. Amazon Prime greenlit a prequel series earlier this year, aptly titled Elle. The series, currently casting a young high school version of Elle Woods, is expected to bring a fresh take on her journey.

While it’s unlikely we’ll see Reese Witherspoon return as Elle Woods on the 2025 movie schedule, there’s hope that the prequel series Elle will make its debut on the 2025 TV lineup. In the meantime, fans can catch the Sweet Home Alabama star alongside Will Ferrell in their upcoming comedy, You’re Cordially Invited, which hits streaming on January 30. The great thing about fiction is it allows people to temporarily suspend their disbelief for the sake of entertainment. Many of the most beloved movies of all time have strange and downright ridiculous premises if you try to explain them out loud, but their strangeness is a part of their charm. Here are 32 films with absolutely ridiculous plots.

Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)

This movie was a critical and commercial darling, and its plot is utterly bizarre. A disillusioned laundromat operator traverses the multiverse, battles soldiers masquerading as IRS office workers, and dances with hot dog fingers in order to save her estranged, nihilistic daughter. It is, by far, one of the best and zaniest Best Picture winners that we’ve seen in a very long time.

21 Jump Street (2012)

On the surface this film seems relatively normal: it’s the classic tale of an awkward nerd and a dumb, handsome jock forming an unlikely duo while navigating the trials and tribulations of high school. Only this time, they’re also buddy cops going undercover as high school students in a sting operation to arrest the dealer of a new illicit drug. And, fittingly, the movie’s visuals are just as trippy as its premise.

Legally Blonde (2001)

In many ways, Legally Blonde was ahead of its time due to how it disrupted harmful stereotypes about hyper-feminine women. Its plot is still a bit goofy though, as it involves a popular, blonde sorority girl working her behind off to secure a spot at one of the most competitive law schools in the country, just to prove to her pretentious ex-boyfriend that she’s worthy of him taking her seriously. Thankfully the film ends with her ditching the loser and discovering a true penchant for law.

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

One of the highest-grossing films of all time has one of the most convoluted plots of all time. A billionaire, retired superhero and his team invent time travel so that he and his fellow superheroes can travel to different timelines and capture magical, rainbow-colored stones so that they can reverse the devastating effects of a purple villain’s success in eliminating half of all life in the universe with a snap of his fingers. Don’t worry, though: you only have to watch 21 films to understand it.

Poor Things (2023)

This colorful, quirky science fiction movie earned Emma Stone her second Oscar, and by just listening to its plot, it’s clear to see why. Stone portrays a woman whose brain has been replaced by that of an infant, and in the beginning of the film she cannot even properly pronounce the word “blood,” but by the end, she is studying to become a doctor. The dramatic transformation she undergoes, while traipsing around Europe and learning philosophy, is equally strange and impressive.

Back To The Future (1985)

Back to the Future is widely thought of as the quintessential time travel movie, and the implications of its time travel are seismic. A teenager accidentally travels 30 years into the past after meeting his eccentric science friend, and while stuck in the past, he inadvertently interferes with the relationship of his teenage parents, which threatens his very existence. Now he has to ensure that the couple stays together before he is erased from history, while dealing with the uncomfortable fact that his teenage mother has taken a liking to him.

The Mask (1994)

Back in the ‘90s, Jim Carrey was arguably the King of Ridiculous Movies, and his turn as Stanley Ipkiss in the mask not only allowed him to show off his excellent comedic sensibilities, but also his amazing face acting and physical capabilities, as his character quite literally turns into a cartoon come to life with a neon green face after donning a magical mask. The bad CGI stretching and morphing only adds to the zany enjoyment of the movie.

Happy Death Day (2017)

There is no worse birthday present than death, and this film forces its protagonist to endure it every birthday. The protagonist, a mean sorority girl, dies on her birthday, and she is forced to relive the tragic day every single day until she figures out who the person responsible is. Also, she has limited time to figure out who the person is before she dies for real (as in, she stops coming back to life).

The Boss Baby (2017)

A lot of animated movies lean into the fact that they are marketed towards kids, and there are few better examples than The Boss Baby. This zany movie’s plot involves the existence of an absurd baby-making corporation in the clouds that delivers a baby with hopes of rising the corporate ladder to a family with a disgruntled former only child, and the unlikely brother duo must work together to stop puppies from becoming the most loved creatures in the world.

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004)

Speaking of absurd animated movies, the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise as a whole is pretty bizarre with its takes on marine life, but its movie definitely pushes the boundaries of what’s believable. In this movie, Plankton steals King Neptune’s crown and frames Mr. Krabs for it, just so Neptune will punish Krabs and give Plankton a chance to steal his coveted burger recipe, sell those burgers at his restaurant, and become dictator of Bikini Bottom. And it’s up to SpongeBob and Patrick to retrieve the crown while driving in a car made out of a Krabby Patty.

Home Alone (1990)

The ridiculousness of Home Alone’s plot likely comes from the fact that such a scenario happening in real life would be deeply sad. A young boy, who already feels like an outsider in his own family, is left behind by said family when they go on a Christmas vacation. And if this minor being left unattended isn’t bad enough, he is forced to set up elaborate, dangerous traps to ward off persistent, home invaders.

Divergent (2014)

The Divergent movie was just one of a multitude of young adult, dystopian franchise films that became massively popular during the 2010s, and it, by far, has the most head-scratching premise. In its future, what’s left of humanity after a cataclysmic war has divided itself into factions based on rudimentary personality traits, such as kindness and honesty. In this reality, you are seen as a massive threat that must be eliminated if you dare to be intelligent, honest, and selfless at the time.

Barbie (2023)

Stereotypical Barbie spends most of her life in an idyllic, woman-ruled, plastic paradise until one day she begins to experience existential dread and the horrible tragedies of cellulite and flat feet. She must then embark on a journey from her perfect Barbie Land to the Real World and discover the meaning of life and womanhood in a male-dominated world. And Ken’s also there, but he’s just Ken.

Cocaine Bear (2023)

The ridiculousness of this movie’s plot can really be summed up with its title. After sacks of cocaine fall into the woods, a bear accidentally becomes addicted to it and attacks the residents of a small town. While this sounds like the plot of a horror movie, it’s actually quite hilarious in the stupidest way possible, because the amount of opportunities these people are given to escape from or incapacitate the bear are numerous, and yet they choose idiocy every single time.

Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone (2001)

Harry Potter’s story has become such a classic by now, that it’s hard to think that at one point it was another strange idea that had to be marketed to the world. In the first movie, Harry is an orphaned boy that is neglected and mistreated by his foster family, only to be politely kidnapped by a gentle giant who tells him he’s a wizard and sends him off to attend a magical boarding school. Also, a fully grown wizard has hated him since he was a baby, because that’s normal.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (2010)

It’s normal when starting a new relationship with someone to not want to think about or compare yourself to their exes. Now, imagine that not only did you have to meet all seven of their exes, but you had to battle them to the death too, preferably in video game combat style. Those are the insane lengths Scott Pilgrim goes through to be with Ramona Flowers.

Twilight (2008)

It’s a tale as old as time: a teenage girl who hates the cold and rain moves to the Pacific Northwest to live with her distant father to allow her mother to travel the country with her new husband, and, while in the Pacific Northwest, said teenage girl meets and falls in love with a sparkly, 108-year-old vampire that not so secretly wants to drink her blood. And then, they live happily ever after or something like that.

The Princess Bride (1987)

The best part of The Princess Bride is its ridiculousness. There’s such a warmth to the film due to the fact that it obviously does not take itself seriously, exemplified by the princess herself being named “Buttercup,” she pushes the man whom she believed took the life of her former lover down a hill, only to realize said man is her true love, and rolls down the hill with him. And this is all after he incapacitates the three men who kidnap her. And that's just the beginning!

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

The most-seen film in movie history also has the most beloved, ridiculous plot in movie history. A young girl and her dog get caught in a tornado, and the storm transports them to a faraway land where there are good witches, bad witches, flying monkeys, talking lions and scarecrows and more. And in order for her to get home, she has to follow a yellow brick road in ruby red slippers.

Despicable Me (2010)

In this silly tale, a villain, seeking to earn more respect in the villain community, plots to steal the moon, which is simple enough. So, obviously, the best way to go about doing so is adopting three orphaned girls and sending the girls to sell cookies at his villain competitor’s house, so that he can infiltrate said house and steal the competitor’s shrink ray to successfully steal the moon. At least, that’s what Despicable Me tries to convince its admittedly very young audience makes sense.

White Chicks (2004)

It’s common to look back at media from decades again with a modern perspective and assess whether said media from that earlier time would be made today. This movie is a clear example of one that is a product of its time, not only because of its crass racial humor, but also because of its dumbfounding plot: two Black, male FBI agents masquerade as blonde white women to protect two social heiresses from being kidnapped. Hijinks ensue, and lewd jokes abound.

Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)

When your movie is being led by comedic genius Robin Williams, it’s likely to have a ridiculous plot, and Mrs. Doubfire is no exception. In this family-friendly flick, Williams portrays an unemployed voice actor going through a difficult divorce. After he is only granted supervised visitation rights to his kids, he comes up with an outrageous plan to spend more time with him: pose as an elderly, female nanny named “Mrs. Doubtfire.”

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

In this film’s universe, all major, commercial holidays coexist with one another and have their own lands which can be accessed by secret, tree-encased portals. The Pumpkin King of Halloween Town becomes disillusioned with his life there, stumbles across the Christmas portal, and falls in love. He does everything in his power to introduce his own, twisted form of Christmas to his macabre home, to limited success.

The Parent Trap (1998)

In yet another case of questionable parenting, a British woman falls in love with and marries an American man, and she gives birth to twin daughters. The couple divorced shortly after the girls are born, and instead of trying to work out a joint custody situation, the parents decide to keep one daughter each and raise her in their respective home countries and pretend the other daughter does not exist. This eventually leads to the girls meeting each other and learning of each other’s existence for the very first time at summer camp, and after a period of rivalry, they decide to join forces to get their parents back together.

13 Going On 30 (2004)

This is another movie that shows you how weird its plot is just with its title. An awkward, 13-year-old wants to skip the uncool parts of life and live life as a successful, 30-year-old woman in New York. And on her birthday, she gets her wish, waking up in the body of a rich, stylish magazine editor with a not-so-great personality. The most bizarre, yet impressive part of this movie is watching Jennifer Gardner portray a 30-year-old woman with the brain of a 13-year-old girl who’s trying to pretend like she’s a 30-year-old woman.

Shazam! (2019)

If you were to ask a child what their dream superpower is, becoming an adult probably wouldn’t be their tenth choice, let alone their top choice, but Billy Batson in Shazam! makes it look super cool. After being chosen by an ancient wizard, the foster kid, can now morph into a fully grown man at will by yelling “Shazam!” and he gets a suite of cool powers.

Central Intelligence (2016)

Few Hollywood best friends are more endearing than Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, and their on-screen chemistry comes to life in this silly buddy cop action movie. Johnson’s character is a formerly obese nerd turned jacked CIA agent who needs Hart’s character’s accounting skills, even though the latter hasn’t seen the former since his days as a star athlete. Of course, they save the world in the campiest, most hilarious ways.

Spy Kids (2001)

Surely many kids have wondered what their lives would be like if their mild-mannered, suburban, if a little boring, parents were actually top-secret spies. Well for the brother-sister duo in this movie, that lifestyle is anything but fun as it leads to them being captured by a villain with giant, sentient thumbs for minions. And, that’s not even the weirdest part.

Matilda (1996)

A young, precocious girl is neglected by her family, so she finds solace in reading a lot. Unlocking so much of her brain’s potential at a such young age grants her telekinetic abilities, which she uses to enact revenge on her parents and awful principal, Ms. Trunchbull.

Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory (1971)

A mysterious, eccentric chocolatier, invites a select group of children with accompanying guardians to his famed chocolate factory, only to discover that there are horrors at every turn, including chewing gum that can turn you into a human-sized blueberry and fizzy drinks that cause you to float, which is fun, until you’re dangerously close to a whirring ceiling fan. The only reason this film is thought of as cheerful and child-friendly, and not downright terrifying, is because it hams up how utterly ridiculous it is.

Alvin And The Chipmunks (2007)

A live-action movie with talking animals will always necessitate some suspension of disbelief, but when those talking animals are chipmunks that also sing, and quickly become the world’s biggest pop stars, at some point a line is crossed and any semblance of realism has flown out the window. The only thing more ridiculous than the rodent singers themselves are all the times their manager, turned adoptive father Dave screams “Alvin!”

The Nutty Professor (1996)

In this movie, Eddie Murphy portrays a brilliant, obese professor who develops a groundbreaking weight-loss formula. Insecure about his size and eager to impress the girl of his dreams, the professor tests out the drug on himself, and he successfully slims down, only for the thin version of himself to develop an evil alter ego and fight to take over the professor’s life permanently. Not only are the performances of this film hilarious and outlandish, especially with Eddie Murphy playing multiple roles, but the visual gags of the professor switching between his thin and large self are something to behold.

Whenever Reese Witherspoon does something iconic, fans are legally bound to discuss it. That's especially true when it has to do with one of Witherspoon's best movies ever, Legally Blonde. It’s been over two decades since Elle Woods first captured our hearts in perfect 2000s rom-com fashion, but it feels like it was just yesterday. I wonder if the Morning Show actress felt the same when she recently revisited the hallowed halls of Harvard, giving major academia vibes. She even took the time to chat with a fan, who gushed about her.

The Wild actress’ visit to the prestigious Ivy League school in Cambridge, Massachusetts this past week coincided with one of the biggest annual events in Boston, the Head of the Charles rowing race. For one lucky fan who was in town for the race, athlete Kate Maistrenko, it was the perfect happy coincidence. The two ran into each other at Harvard Business school, and the Ukrainian Olympic rower commemorated the meeting with the following Instagram post:

Kate Maistrenko's smiling face seems to indicate that she was happy to be in the presence of the Hello Sunshine founder. And, honestly, who could blame her? While chatting with People, Maistrenko could not stop gushing about meeting the Sweet Home Alabama actress when she discussed their run-in:

This interaction is both surprising to me and at the same time, not at all. What I find pleasantly refreshing is hearing about a celebrity taking more than a second to genuinely connect with a fan. Those stories always warm my heart, and this one in particular is just so wholesome. I’m also not surprised that the actress in question is Reese Witherspoon and that the student athlete only had nice things to say. The Big Little Lies actress has always seemed down to earth and mindful of the world and industry around her.

Both those qualities reflect in her work and her production company. Despite early struggles, Hello Sunshine now has so many successful projects under its belt that I’ve lost track. Some of its biggest hits include Where The Crawdads Sing, Daisy Jones and the Six, and one of Reese Witherspoon's latest streaming roles, Your Place Or Mine, which is available with a Netflix subscription.

What I love most though is that the company's success gives the A-lister room to pick and choose films important to her, stories about women for women, and adaptations of books from her wildly popular Reese’s Book Club. It’s why she started the company in the first place, to bring forth the movies and TV people both want and need.

What I and others want these days, though, is more Legally Blonde. Don’t you fret, the famous blonde lawyer is on it. While Mindy Kaling's delayed Legally Blonde 3 seems to have taken the back seat, casting for a high school Elle Woods is in full swing. The prequel show to LB -- titled Elle -- was greenlit by Amazon Prime earlier this year so, hopefully, we see the first season appear somewhere on the 2025 TV schedule.

As for Legally Blonde 3, the script is in progress, but it's unclear when production will start. Still, with the Never Have I Ever creator at the helm, the film is sure to be worth the wait and filled with even more quotable moments from our favorite pink lawyer. At present, though, it does my heart well to see Reese Witherspoon showing shades of her character in real life -- both through her proactive attitude and eagerness to connect with students, creatives and others.

If you’re talking about the best movies of the 2000s, Legally Blonde is undoubtedly going to come up. The iconic comedy starring Reese Witherspoon has everything a great movie needs — a good story, great characters, an adorable dog side-kick, a fantastic cast, and of course, quotable dialogue. To say that it was a good time going through the movie to seek out the absolute best quotes from the 2001 hit would be an understatement. So let’s get into it...

"And you didn't just get it in, I saw it in the June Vogue a year ago. So if you're trying to sell it to me for full price, you picked the wrong girl."

If you assume Elle is ditzy and an easy mark to be taken advantage of, you’re in for a rude awakening. The saleswoman at the dress shop learns this lesson the hard way when she tries to lie about a dress she’s showing Elle. Big mistake. Huge! Wait, sorry, wrong movie.

"So you're breaking up with me because I'm too blonde?!"

Warner (Matthew Davis) begins their supposedly romantic dinner out by breaking up with Elle. He makes it even worse when he reminds her of his Senate aspirations, and informs her that he needs to marry a Jackie, not a Marlyn. And Elle is justifiably outraged.

"Law school's for people who are boring and ugly and serious. And you, Button, are none of those things."

While some parents would be thrilled to learn their child had aspirations of attending law school, Elle’s parents are baffled that she would want to abandon the momentum she’s built as first runner-up at the Miss Hawaiian Tropic competition in order to attend a school where the people are — according to Mr. Woods — boring, ugly and serious.

"I once had to judge a tighty whitey contest for Lambda Kappa Pi. Trust me, I can handle anything."

While her advisor seems dubious that Elle is up for the challenge of getting into Harvard Law School, Elle is quick to draw on her past trials as a reminder of what she’s capable of.

"You mean like on vay-cay? Let’s all go. Road trip!"

Of course Elle’s friends — Margot (Jessica Cauffiel) and Serena (Alanna Ubach) — are instantly excited when she announces that she’s going to Harvard. But that's largely due to their incorrect assumption that she was talking about a vacation. Still, gotta love the support!

"I feel comfortable using legal jargon in everyday life."

Elle’s college admissions video is full of her usual pep, but she also makes sure to show off her lawyery side, including her comfort in using legal jargon, like objecting when someone whistles at her.

"She was in a Ricky Martin video..."

We barely have a chance to recover from Elle’s amazing admissions video when we’re brought into the room where the Harvard admissions board is reviewing it and… well, they don’t know quite what to make of Elle Woods, but I like to think the Dean of Admissions was coming from a place of impressed approval when he pointed out that Elle was in a Ricky Martin video.

"Hi. Woods Comma Elle?"

This line gets me every time. When Elle arrives at Harvard, she approaches the registration table as though she’s checking into a hotel (or as the guy she speaks to suggests, a cruise ship). She even introduces herself last-name-first, and includes the comma for good measure.

"Hi. I'm Elle Woods, and this is Bruiser Woods, and we're both Gemini vegetarians."

It was a choice between this line and the anecdote Elle shares about talking Cameron Diaz out of purchasing a heinous angora sweater. As much as I love her laughing off the idea that orange is the new pink in this scene, this list needs a Bruiser (Moonie) quote, so let’s go with the one where Elle introduces herself and her dog as Gemini vegetarians.

"What, like it's hard?"

It’s obvious that her first run-in with Warner at Harvard is important, and Elle manages to nail every moment of it. That includes acting delightfully nonchalant when Warner is disbelieving that she could get into Harvard Law school.

"Warner told me all about you. You're famous at our club."

Elle is visibly thunderstruck at the realization that Warner not only already has a new girlfriend, but she’s also his fiancé. Meanwhile Vivian (Selma Blair) is already well aware of Elle, and in addition to showing off the giant diamond engagement ring she’s wearing, points out that Elle is “famous” at their club. That doesn’t sound like a good thing.

"I even hired a Coppola to direct my admissions video."

After learning that Warner is engaged, Elle laments about everything she went through to get into Harvard just to get him back. That apparently includes hiring a notable director to make that admissions video.

"I changed my mind. I'd pick the dangerous one, because I'm not afraid of a challenge."

Elle is down numerous times throughout Legally Blonde, but she never stays down for long. After processing the fact that Warner is engaged, she regroups and decides that this is just one more challenge to face. As she makes it clear to Vivian during one of their law classes, she’s not afraid of challenges.

"I'll show you how valuable Elle Woods can be."

It's devastating, the way Elle looks when she realizes that nothing she does is ever going to be good enough for Warner. That emotion shifts to determination, however, as she storms out of Vivian’s party in her bunny costume with one goal in mind — to show them all.

"I'm taking the dog."

Elle’s friendship with Paulette (Jennifer Coolidge) is one of the many things that makes this movie as lovable as it is. Not only is it great to see Elle have some support when everyone else doubts or dislikes her, but she provides support to Paulette, and helps her get her dog back from her terrible ex.

"Oh, and it's scented. I think it gives it a little something extra, don't you think?"

By this point in the movie, Elle is already proving she has what to takes to run at or beyond the pace of her fellow law students. So it’s no surprise that she has a resume ready when Professor Callahan (Victor Garber) suggests she apply for his internship. And of course it’d be pink and scented. Even on paper, Elle Woods will stand out.

"You think she just woke up one morning and said, I think I'll go to law school today."

It’s impossible not to laugh at the way Professor Callahan and Emmett (Luke Wilson) stare at Elle as she walks away, completely baffled by everything about her. Making everything look effortless is part of Elle’s charm, but we all know how hard she worked to get to this point in the story.

"Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people don't shoot their husbands. They just dont!"

Elle’s logic when expressing her disbelief that the client they’re representing, Brooke (Ali Larter), could have killed her husband is practically airtight, right? Ok, maybe endorphins aren’t a guarantee of innocence, but she’s not wrong to immediately reject the idea that Brooke is guilty.

"In my experience, it has a 98% success rate of getting a man's attention, and when used appropriately, it has an 83% return rate on a dinner invitation."

That Elle is more intelligent than she lets on is apparent from the start of Legally Blonde, but it’s little moments like this — when she’s explaining the success-rate of her “Bend and Snap” move — that remind us of just how brainy she can be.

"Well, forget it. I've already spent too many hours crying over you!"

There’s a moment earlier in the film, when Elle’s in her working-hard montage, that we see David Kidney (Oz Perkins) help Elle out by retrieving a book from a high shelf. I like to think that that small moment of kindness stuck with Elle, or maybe she would’ve done this anyway: When Elle overhears a woman turning David down (in a really rude way), she quickly steps in, not to defend him, but to slap him and pretend to be a scorned woman who took forever to get over him after their amazing night together. Of course, the woman he's talking to immediately sees him in a new light.

"His father had to make a call."

Since they’re both among the students picked for Callahan’s internship, Elle and Vivian begin to bond. That includes this scene, where Vivian secretly reveals to Elle that Warner got waitlisted when he applied to Harvard Law, and only got in after his father made a call. Well, well, well.

"I blew it, Elle. My snap was all over the place!"

Poor Paulette tried the bend-and-snap move on the dreamy UPS Guy (Bruce Thomas), and it went horribly wrong. Yeah, she bent just fine, but her snap involved a head-butt to UPS Guy’s face. Disaster!

"But don't worry, my girlfriend Serena once barfed on a guy during the Blair Witch Project and they ended up dating for three months."

Elle’s logic never fails. When Paulette laments about her disastrous bend-and-snap situation, Elle tells her about the time Serena’s stomach couldn’t handle the Blair Witch Project, and things still worked out for her and the guy she was dating (for a few months anyway).

"And your boyfriend's name is?" "Chuck."

After Callahan disregards Elle’s suspicion that Enrique was unlikely to be having an affair with Brooke because he’s gay, Emmett takes the suggestion into the cross examination, and quickly gets Enrique to slip up when he asks him the name of his boyfriend. Which is Chuck.

"You're fired. I have new representation."

Elle had every reason to want to leave Callahan’s internship, after he made an inappropriate move on her. Fortunately, word gets around to the right people, and that includes Brooke, who is happy to fire Callahan as her attorney and bring on Elle and Emmett as her legal representation.

"Oh, look how cute, there's like a judge and everything!" "And jury people."

Of course Serena and Margot aren’t going to miss Elle’s big moment as a trial attorney. The duo show up just in time, and make a big scene when they see the judge and jury. “Vote for Elle!”

"I didn't mean to shoot him, I thought t was YOU walking through the door!"

Elle gets off to an awkward start when she begins her questions to Chutney (Linda Cardellini), but she gets her footing quickly when Chutney mentions getting a perm before taking a shower. From there, Elle shifts her line of questioning in a successful attempt to discredit Chutney’s proposed timeline of events. Still, no one could’ve expected that Chutney would crack under the pressure and confess to killing her father.

"Oh, my god." "Oh, my god." "Oh, my god."

As if the moment Chutney confesses couldn’t be more perfect, it’s soon followed by several reactions that are pretty much the same — “Oh, my god.” That includes the judge (played by Francesca P. Roberts), who seems floored at what Elle was able to do in just a few moments.

"Oh, Warner. I've waited so long to hear you say that. But I'm gonna be a partner at a lawfirm by the time I'm thirty, I need a boyfriend who's not such a complete bonehead."

It’s been clear for a while at this point that Elle’s not doing all of this to impress Warner. So it’s not entirely surprising that the moment he tries to get her back, after her big court victory, she turns him down in brutal fashion. But it’s no less satisfying to watch. She’s got bigger dreams now than being his wife.

"Warner... Do you remember when we spent those four amazing hours in the hot tub after winter formal? This is so much better than that!"

When Elle learns she’s landed a spot among Callahan’s interns, she’s quick to point out that this victory is even better than those hours they shared in a hot tub one time.

"Warner? I totally forgot you go here!"

I love the way Elle delivers this line. Upon running into Warner in the halls of one of the Harvard buildings, she reacts as though Harvard is just a place people go, like it’s a high school or something.

"My cousin had that. Apparently you get a really bad rash on your..."

When Elle tells her friends she’s planning to take the LSATs, Serena mistakes the law school exam for some kind of medical condition her cousin once got. Fortunately, the LSATs are just an exam.

I know the search for the high school Elle Words just began, however, it also might be over if fans have their way. After Reese Witherspoon announced that they are officially searching for a young actor to play Elle in the Prime Video prequel about the iconic Legally Blonde character, the actress’s fans quickly took to her comments to point out that the perfect person for the part might be related to her.

Taking to Instagram to announce the news about the Legally Blonde prequel Elle, Reese Witherspoon explained that the casting call is “open,” meaning that anyone can audition. In the video, which you can see below, her excitement was palpable, and I could tell that she truly can’t wait to find the young actress who will play the high school version of her iconic lawyer.

However, the fans have someone else in mind for this prequel to one of the best movies of the 2000s. Considering the actress who led the Legally Blonde cast has a daughter in her 20s, Ava Phillippe, many took to the comments of Witherspoon’s post to exclaim that Ava would be a great fit for the role, take a look:

• Just give your daughter that role. She’s your younger version 😬 -pperezg
• I do think the people have a point. Ava would be insane. Just saying. ❤️ -ammygriffin

Now, notably, Ava Phillippe is 25 years old and not an actress (she's a model), but that’s perfectly fine. The casting call is open, people between the ages of 20 and 30 commonly play high schoolers, and both her parents -- Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe -- are actors. So, it seems like a natural fit, and I have to say that I’m in agreement with these comments.

To add more proof as to why she’s the perfect fit, there’s constantly online discourse about how much Ava and Reese look alike.

The actress and her ex-husband Ryan Phillippe don’t agree on which parent their daughter looks more like (Phillippe is convinced she is his mini-me). However, she 100% resembles both her parents to me, especially once you see her side-by-side with them, which you can see below:

Basically, I think she could easily pull off the pink and play Elle Woods. However, only time will tell as we don’t know if Ava Phillippe even wants to step into her mom’s shoes literally and figuratively to play this iconic character.

Just in case you needed another reminder that celebrity fashion is all over the early aughts, Brie Larson gave us a Barbiecore pink look that actually channels a much earlier movie: Legally Blonde. The actress was recently on hand for  a SAG-Aftra event in support of Lessons in Chemistry, but it was more like “Lessons in how to dress like Elle Woods. 

Rocking a pink blouse and a pink tweed skirt with cool ballet flats in a slightly darker shade, Brie Larson looked like she could bend and snap any second. The look as a whole channeled Elle Woods, though jury's out on whether it's technically closer to the peacock blue legal look she sported or her main suit in Legally Blonde: Red, White and Blonde. It sort of has it's own thing going on, but it's definitely referential too. 

Larson also took to social media to share a close up of her outfit, confirming she, too recognizes she looks like Reese Witherspoon in what may be her most iconic role. After she captioned her post, “Just a little Elle Woods cosplay for a sag-aftra q&a,” Reese Witherspoon saw it and actual responded, joking on Instagram: 

Indeed, the timing of the post is pretty impeccable. Legally Blonde's been a topic of coversation of late.

In fact, Reese Witherspoon had been working to bring back Elle Woods in a third sequel for a while, with MGM announcing the project originally back in 2020. In the spring, it was announced the studio is switching to a Prime Video TV series Elle that will be a prequel set in the character's teenaged years. Unfortunately, there hasn't been new word on Legally Blonde 3 since Reese commented on it a couple of years ago. That project would actually feature Reese Witherspoon, but at least the Amazon TV bent will be something concrete for the fans. 

This isn't the first time another celebrity has channeled Witherspoon's popular movie character. Mindy Kaling did it once for a pool party, too, hopping on a float like Elle Woods does in her Harvard Law application video. (Kaling was expected to be involved with Legally Blonde 3, to note.) Florence Pugh did it once for a Black Widow press tour. And even Reese herself has been known to channel Elle Woods on occasion. 

Brie doing it is the icing on the cake. It's honestly too bad she's in her thirties, because I kind of would be interested to see what she'd do with a young Elle. But for now, I'll take the cosplay.

The Big Lebowski

One of the things that makes the Coen Brothers' masterpiece The Big Lebowski is how The Dude and other characters learn things along the way and use those new facts and lines later in the movie. It's something you might never notice if you didn't watch the movie over and over and that kind of thing will not stand. Not to mention it has some really classic lines that are endlessly quotable. 

Clueless

As if we'd ever get bored of watching Clueless. There are so many great characters, from Cher (Alicia Silverstone) to Tai (Brittany Murphy) to Mr. Hall (Wallace Shawn), that we could watch over and over just to watch one character each time. 

The Dark Knight

Of all the comic movies that have been released in the 21st Century, there is one performance that will always stand above all the others. Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight ranks among the best roles ever seen on film, superhero movies or otherwise. It's so good that it literally never gets old or stale. There is something to behold every time you watch the movie. 

Die Hard

Watching Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman face off in Die Hard is the main reason the movie will always be rewatchable. Both put in some of the best performances of their careers and even though there have been many Die Hard sequels, none of them quite have the charm and magic that the original has. 

Dirty Dancing

For decades now people have been having the time of their lives watching Dirty Dance on repeat. The music, the dancing, the love story... it brings audiences along for a realistic, yet fantastical story all in one. It's been beloved for years for a reason. 

Dazed And Confused

Dazed And Confused is among the best movies about high school ever made. It's also one of the best movies of the 1990s, though it's set in the '70s. Those aren't the qualities that make it so rewatchable. It's simply the amazing cast and the endless amounts of quotable lines those actors deliver. It's always pleasurable to watch actors like Paker Posey, Ben Affleck, Cole Hauser, and Matthew McConaughey so early in their careers. 

Back To The Future

There is a level of rewatchability to all three Back To The Future movies, but the first still stands way above the sequels. It's a movie so fun and so well-paced that you never get bored, even if it's the 150th time you've watched it. 

Everything Everywhere All at Once

Everything Everywhere All at Once has a lot going on. It's a movie worth watching again and again if for no other reason than it's easy to miss stuff the first, or even fifth time you watch it. The concept is so cool and so well executed, and the acting performances are so good, that it's impossible to get bored with the film. 

The Godfather

Though the entry just says The Godfather, this could really count for either Part I or Part II, as both are among the most rewatchable movies ever. There is a reason they both consistently rank among the best movies ever made. The acting performances are amazing, the dialog is incredible, and Francis Ford Coppola's directing is as good as it gets on film. 

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 1

Let's be honest, there are quite a few movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that you can watch over and over. There is one that stands above the rest though. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 1 has great music and great quotes, which are two things that really make movies forever rewatchable. It's just a really fun movie with some of the most fun characters in the whole universe. 

Legally Blonde

If you want to know how valuable Elle Woods can be, just try to stop watching Legally Blonde when you randomly come across it. It can't be done. It's filled with quotable lines and one of the most charming performances of Reese Witherspoon's stellar career. 

The Princess Bride

From Gen Xers to Zoomers, The Princess Bride has become part of millions of people's childhood. It's a movie that kids and adults can watch over and over, finding different wonderful things about it, depending on your maturity level. No matter how many times you watch, you can always find something new to observe and love about The Princess Bride. 

Raiders Of The Lost Ark

Who doesn't love Indiana Jones? The character, played of course by the great Harrison Ford, has become one of the most enduring movie heroes of all time. Well into the 21st Century, Hollywood is coming up with new adventures for the old archeologist. In the end, it all goes back to the beginning though, with the O.G. movie, Raider of the Lost Ark. 

Clue

If you were to ask around the staff of Cinemablend what off-beat comedy is their favorite, there is a decent chance Clue would be the answer you get. If for no other reason, the movie can be - and should be - watched over and over just for Tim Curry's amazing, manic, hilarious performance as The Butler...who butles and creates absolute mayhem. 

The Shawshank Redemption

It's hard for people to believe that The Shawshank Redemption wasn't a big hit in theaters. For whatever reason, it failed to find an audience. That all changed when the movie hit cable TV and became one of the most-watched movies in movie history. It was on TV all the time because people watched it all the time, over and over. 

Jurassic Park

The moment in Jurassic Park when Dr. Grant (Sam Neill) and Dr. Sattler (Laura Dern) see the dinosaurs for the first time, with John Williams' amazing score swelling in the background is such a great movie moment, that you can watch it over and over and a tear will still come to your eye. Now throw in all the other great parts and you have a seriously rewatchable movie. 

The Lion King

Disney sure knows how to make movies that kids and adults alike can watch over and over. We could really pick almost any of their classic cartoons here, but The Lion King is so good it's been remade into a live-action hit and one of the most successful Broadway shows of all time. All three are eminently rewatchable. 

Mean Girls

You know if a movie gets a remake less than 20 years after it was originally made, especially when that remake is based on a Broadway musical adaptation, it must be a movie you can watch over and over. Fans of Means Girls just can't get enough of the comedy, both on stage and screen. 

The Wolf Of Wall Street

If you're a fan of Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese, or bad language, The Wolf Of Wall Street is likely a movie you've watched numerous times, right? And why wouldn't you? It's an almost perfect movie. Much of the story is tragic, but the ride to get there is wild. 

9 To 5

Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin, and Jane Fonda are three national treasures. Put them in a movie where they torture their horrible boss played by the late great Dabney Coleman and you've got the recipe for a movie that people will never get bored of, just like 9 to 5.

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

Star Wars fans can watch any of the many movies over and over. All movie fans can watch Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back over and over, however. You don't have to be obsessed with every bit of Star Wars lore to absolutely love Empire. It's the best of the movies and one of the best movies ever made. It's got some of the craziest action scenes, the coolest characters, and the best plot twist of all time, at least according to many. It's simply the best. 

10 Things I Hate About You

When a movie is a hit with teenagers, especially one as popular as 10 Things I Hate About You, you can bet it'll be a rewatchable movie. Throw in some breakout performances by Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Julia Stiles, a plot based on a Shakespeare play, and you've got all the ingredients you need for a massive hit that people will watch again and again. 

Fight Club

The first rule of Fight Club might be don't talk about Fight Club, but no one really follows that rule, and the second rule might as well be, "watch Fight Club over and over and quote it endlessly" because that's what Fight Club really is. Like many of director David Fincher's movies, Fight Club is so well done that you see something new in it every time you watch, just like many of the great movies on this list. 

Titanic

To paraphrase the late, great Jerry Garcia, Titanic is like black licorice. Not everyone likes it, but the people that do like it, really like it. The James Cameron mega-hit isn't for everyone, in fact, it might have as many haters as it does lovers, but those who do love it never get bored with watching the wonderful sets and spectacular effects that the movie is best known for. 

The Matrix

While it's true that the Matrix trilogy had diminishing returns, there is no denying how amazing and groundbreaking the first one was. It still has a hold on popular culture, decades after its initial release. While some fans may not go back to the three sequels, the original is still a favorite for everyone that was red-pilled from the beginning. 

Pretty Woman

As rom-coms go, you can't get more perfect than Pretty Woman. Sure, the plot is a little dated and in some ways problematic, but the performances from the leads, Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, and the side characters, like Jason Alexander and Hector Elizondo are so good, it allows us to overlook the aging flaws of the movie and watch it again and again with nothing but joy. 

Gladiator

It really doesn't matter how many times you seen Gladiator, you are still going to jump up out of your seat when Maximus (Russell Crowe) reveals himself to Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). it's a moment in cinema history that will stand the test of time and still be a classic centuries from now. 

Jaws

It's no accident that Jaws is on this list. It's considered the first "summer blockbuster" but it's so much more. The characters are so well-developed that you can't help but root for all of them, except the mayor, of course. Sure the shark looks a little dated, but director Steven Spielberg did such an amazing job building the suspense by not seeing the shark, that it's easy to look past the 1970s movie magic.

The Great Escape

On Christmas in the United States, we watch things like A Christmas Story and It's a Wonderful Life every year. In the UK, they watch The Great Escape. We'll admit, that's a pretty amazing tradition because despite its nearly three-hour runtime, there is never a dull moment and it proves that longer is often better. The all-star cast and sharp direction keep the movie humming along from the time they are all locked up until they all get locked up again after the escape. 

The Incredibles

The Incredibles was an incredible hit for Pixar in 2004. Just like many Pixar and Disney movies before and after it, it became an indelible part of millions of kids' childhoods and even as they've aged, they still love the Parr family. While it took 16 years, when a sequel was finally made in 2018, it took in a cool $1.2 billion, attesting to just how loved (and watched) the original was and is. 

A League of Their Own

We all know that there is no crying in baseball because we've all seen Tom Hanks say it a million times as we've watched A League of Their Own over and over. All the characters are so unique and memorable that it's like watching an old friend every time it's on. 

Caddyshack

Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, and Ted Knight are four of the most quotable actors of all time. When you put them all in the same movie, and give them some of the best lines ever written, it's no surprise that Caddyshack is the kind of movie that people watch so often they end up memorizing it. Dangerfield, a king of the one-liner, is especially great in this one. 

I refuse to object to this because Elle Woods is coming back to the small screen in Elle!

When Legally Blonde was released back in 2001, it inspired an entire generation of young women, with a fantastic performance from Reese Witherspoon and the even more awesome Legally Blonde cast. A sequel was released not that long after, but with nearly twenty years and no new sequel, fans have wondered if we'll ever see Elle again. 

Thankfully, that question has been answered. While there's no confirmation of Legally Blonde 3 happening, we will be seeing her another way – in the show, Elle. What is this going to be about? Here is what we know so far. 

What Is The Elle Premiere Date?

At the time of this writing, there is no set premiere date for Elle, which isn't that surprising. The prequel series was only first announced in May 2024, so it would be pretty shocking to have a premiere date already. Don't expect it to be on any 2024 TV schedule. 

That being said, it could end up coming out in 2025, based on how these kinds of shows work. It's clear there's a set premise already and that things are moving in the right direction. For a show like Elle, there likely won't be many special effects that might make us wait longer than usual. If casting and filming go over well, we could see it before too much longer. 

Elle Will Follow Elle Woods In High School In The 90s

I know, I know, everyone and their mother was hoping for Legally Blonde 3 and had their theories ready to go as to what it might be about if it were to be confirmed – like Elle running for president or something like that. 

However, Elle will be different. Instead, it will be a prequel TV series. According to Amazon Prime, it's actually going to flashback to the 90s, when she was in high school, and we will get to follow the journey that turned her into the Elle Woods that we know today. 

The Head of Television at Amazon MGM Studios, Vernon Sanders, even offered his thoughts on the new series in a statement, saying that he was incredibly excited for the latest story and how "honored" they were to be making the series:

This is a great idea. Would I have loved LB 3? Of course I would, but Elle will give us a great chance to learn more about arguably one of the most popular female movie characters of all time. 

Aside from that, there are plenty of fantastic prequel series that have made franchises even better – House of the Dragon is an excellent prequel to Game of Thrones, and House of the Dragon Season 2 is coming out in 2024. Andor is unique and a wonderful prequel to Rogue One. The comedy series Ted was a huge hit and is a prequel to the original film, Ted. 

Prequel series can be really well received, and I think Elle will be a great contender for one of the best. 

Laura Kittrell Is Serving As Showrunner

Amazon Prime also confirmed that Laura Kittrel will serve as showrunner for the series. She is also credited as a creator and an executive producer. 

Kittrel has worked on various TV shows and movies that will definitely get you hyped for Elle. These include High School, Insecure (where she co-produced 36 episodes), and Black Monday. She also wrote for The Michael J. Fox Show, The Comedians, and Downward Dog, as well as the previously mentioned series.

Reese Witherspoon Will Work As An Executive Producer On The Show

While I think Reese Witherspoon doesn't look a day over 29, it would be pretty surprising to see her reprise the role of Elle in a prequel series about her, so we know that she will not be back physically as Elle, at least in a starring capacity. 

But what we do know is that Witherspoon will be back as an executive producer on the show. In fact, when it was announced, she released a statement that showed just how excited she is for the story of Elle Woods to continue:

For those who don't know, Hello Sunshine is actually a media company that Reese Witherspoon founded. It has produced and worked on some of the biggest hits of the last decade, including Gone Girl, Wild, and Big Little Lies, the latter two of which featured Witherspoon as a star. 

The company has also worked on various other movies and shows, such as Where the Crawdads Sing, Something from Tiffany's, Your Place or Mine, Lucy in the Sky, Little Fires Everywhere, Tiny Beautiful Things, Daisy Jones & the Six, one of the best Apple TV+ shows, The Morning Show, and many more. 

Reese Witherspoon's best movies certainly include Legally Blonde and its sequel. And it is a shame that we won't be able to see her as Elle in a starring capacity. However, with her production company, as well as herself, behind the wheel, Elle is going to be a great addition to the world.   

Elle Will Come Out On Prime Video

The last thing we know that was previously mentioned is that Elle will be on Prime Video. Prime confirmed the show during an upfront presentation in May 2024. 

Truthfully, this is an excellent thing for Amazon Prime as a whole. The streaming platform has created some of the absolute biggest shows of the last few years. Fallout had a massive debut, so much so that Fallout Season 2 is confirmed. The Boys is an excellent superhero series – and yes, we are still waiting on The Boys Season 4. Another show, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskin, earned a Season 2 renewal as well. 

Amazon Prime tends to knock it out of the park with its shows, and I have a strong feeling that Elle will be on that list.

During the United States Civil War, the Black volunteers of a Union military troop struggle with prejudice at the hands of their battlefield enemies and their white comrades alike.

Why it is a great inspirational movie: One of best war movies of its (or any time) is Glory for the way it depicts one of the most divisive eras in American history through the eyes of soldiers given the chance to prove their worth in a country that treated them as inferiors and came out as heroes.

The Pursuit Of Happyness (2006)

A newly single father (Academy Award winner Will Smith) to a six-year-old boy (Jaden Smith) struggles to overcome poverty and homelessness and find a better career than selling bone density scanners in 1980s San Francisco.

Why it is a great inspirational movie: Easily one of the best Will Smith movies is (the intentionally misspelled) The Pursuit of Happyness, which is based on a memoir of the same name by Chris Gardner, who would go on to become a successful entrepreneur and motivational speaker — showing the importance of not giving up even in your darkest moments.

Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

A young man (former Skins cast member Dev Patel) participating on India’s version of Who Wants to Be A Millionaire? finds that each of his increasingly difficult trivia questions reminds him of a key moment from his childhood in Mumbai.

Why it is a great inspirational movie: From director Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire — one of the best movies of the 2000s — is a film that cannot quite be defined by one genre but, at its core, is the story of a person who goes above and beyond for the love of his life (Frieda Pinto) — a kind of passion that everyone should aspire for.

Hidden Figures (2016)

In its early years, NASA turns to three mathematically inclined Black women (played by Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe) for help to ensure that astronaut John Glenn (Glenn Powell) has a safe trip into the stars.

Why it is a great inspirational movie: A great movie to watch during Women’s History Month or to watch during Black History Month (or anytime) as well, is Hidden Figures, which depicts the previously untold story of how mathematicians Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, and Katherine Gobels Johnson overcame both racial and gender discrimination and played an essential role in the development of the United States Space Program.

It's A Wonderful Life (1946)

After suffering a devastating financial loss, a banker and family man (Jimmy Stewart) is given the chance on Christmas Eve to see what the world would be like if he never existed, courtesy of his guardian angel (Henry Travers).

Why it is a great inspirational movie: Director Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life is justifiably recognized as one of the greatest Christmas movies ever made, but (in addition to its holiday setting not being particularly necessary), it is great to watch any time of the year for its valuable lessons in self-discovery and self-worth.

Life Of Pi (2012)

An older Indian man (the late Irrfan Khan) recalls to a young writer (Rafe Spall) the unbelievable story of how, when he was a teen (played by Suraj Sharma), he formed a trusting bond with a Bengal Tiger in order to survive while adrift at sea.

Why it is a great inspirational movie: Directed to Academy Award-winning acclaim by Ang Lee and based on the novel by Yann Martel, the story of Life of Pi may seem to border on the impossible, but would give anyone who has seen it a reason to at least try to overcome whatever seemingly insurmountable circumstances come their way.

Erin Brockovich (2000)

While working as a paralegal, a divorced single mother of three (Julia Roberts in her Oscar-winning role) uncovers a local water pollution scandal and almost single-handedly takes on the California corporation behind it.

Why it is a great inspirational movie: The world could use a lot more motivation to be an advocate for environmental activism and one potent source of inspiration would be director Steven Soderbergh’s Erin Brockovich, which is based on the life of one of the most famous environmental activists and, not to mention, a highly influential feminist icon.

To Kill A Mockingbird (1962)

A widowed father and attorney (Gregory Peck) defends a Black man (Brock Peters) wrongfully accused of assaulting his female employer in 1930s Alabama.

Why it is a great inspirational movie: When the American Film Institute ranked cinema’s greatest heroes and villains, the choice for the Number One hero was Peck’s role as Atticus Finch in Robert Mulligan’s adaptation of Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, citing his staunch aversion to prejudice and crucial lessons in considering the perspective of others.

Good Will Hunting (1997)

A highly intelligent, but emotionally stunted, young Boston native (Matt Damon) forms a life-changing bond with a therapist (Academy Award winner Robin Williams) tasked with helping him reach his full potential.

Why it is a great inspirational movie: Confronting and overcoming harsh and uncomfortable truths about ourselves or our pasts in order to better understand our own self-worth is an essential theme of director Gus Van Sant’s Good WIll Hunting, which was also written by stars Damon and Ben Affleck, who earned Oscars for their screenplay.

Forrest Gump (1994)

A man of below-average intelligence (Tom Hanks in his second Oscar-winning role) witnesses segregation, the Vietnam War, the Watergate Scandal, and just about every other significant moment in history during the mid-20th Century.

Why it is a great inspirational movie: From director Robert Zemeckis and based on the novel by Winston Groom, Best Picture Oscar winner Forrest Gump is a thoroughly amusing and endearing tale that celebrates how kindness and heart are more important than intelligence.

After being dumped by her boyfriend, a college student with a passion for fashion (Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon) sets out to reinvent herself by getting accepted into Harvard Law School.

Why it is a great inspirational movie: Elle Woods’ goal at the beginning of Robert Luketic’s Legally Blonde is mainly to prove to her ex-boyfriend that there is more to her than her looks, but by the end, when she gives one of cinema’s most inspirational speeches, she ends up proving her worth to someone more important: herself.
