What He's Into: Adam has been a fan of Marvel, DC and Star Wars stories since he was little, and among the fandoms he’s joined later in life are Star Trek, Indiana Jones, Doctor Who, John Wick and the MonsterVerse. Additionally, he still dips his toes into the procedural pool by being a dedicated NCIS watcher, and he’s also up for a good historical/period piece movie or TV show every now and then. Adam also enjoys reading, and while nowadays this mostly consists of pouring over comics (thank you for making this easier than ever, DC Universe Infinite and Marvel Unlimited!), he’s making an effort to get back to delving into regular books, including finally reading Dune and revisiting the original Sherlock Holmes stories.
Airing on PBS from 2010 to 2015, making it one of the many prestige TV shows that didn’t air on HBO, Downton Abbey is still considered to be one of the best small screen dramas of all time. The saga of the Crawley family across the 1910s and 1920s collected multiple Emmy Awards and other accolades during its run, and even after the show finished, the public got to reunite with these characters in two movies: 2019’s Downton Abbey: The Motion Picture and 2022’s Downton Abbey: A New Era. These days, the series and that latter movie can be streamed with a Peacock subscription, while the former movie can be accessed with a Netflix subscription.

But the Downton Abbey journey only lasts so long, and once you’re finished, you may be itching to watch shows similar to it, i.e. period dramas exploring class and society, or at least something tangential to that. So for those looking for shows like Downton Abbey to binge next, here’s our selection on what to check out and how to watch them.

The Gilded Age

Let’s get the most obvious pick out of the way first. If you’re looking to watch another period piece show from showrunner Julian Fellowes, the man who created Downton Abbey, then look no further than the currently-running The Gilded Age. Beginning in 1882, 30 years before the start of Downton Abbey, this series is set in the United States and follows an ensemble cast anchored by Louisa Jacobson’s Marian Brook, who’s forced to live with her estranged aunts after losing access to her wealth due to the death of her father, who’d gone bankrupt.

Why The Gilded Age is like Downton Abbey: As with Downton Abbey, The Gilded Age focuses on both the wealthy and those in their circles, including their domestic workers, during this particular historical period. In this case though, viewers are following along with a clash between the old wealth and new wealth families, and there’s also a focus on the African-American upper class. Still, between that subject matter, elaborate costumes and same guiding creative hand, the similarity doesn’t get any stronger than between these two shows.

Stream The Gilded Age on Max.

Upstairs, Downstairs

From 1971 to 1975, Upstairs, Downstairs aired on ITV, with the story stretching from 1903 to 1930. The subjects of attention are the Bellamy family, who live in London’s Belgravia district, and we see how things like the Edwardian era, World War I and the societal upheaval in the 1920s change their lives. There was also a follow-up show that ran from 2010 to 2012.

Why Upstairs, Downstairs is like Downton Abbey: Although it’s hard to say if Julian Fellowes was directly inspired by Upstairs, Downstairs when coming up with Downton Abbey, it’s impossible not to see how similar the two shows are. This is a critically-acclaimed British show following a wealthy family and their employees across multiple decades that was eventually screened as part of PBS’ Masterpiece Theatre. Need I say more?

Stream Upstairs, Downstairs on BritBox.

The Crown

Frequently called one of the best shows on Netflix, The Crown premiered on the streaming service in 2016 and wrapped its six-season run in December 2023. The show followed along with the British monarchy from 1947 until the mid-2000s, with its ensemble cast including notable names like Claire Foy, Matt Smith, Olivia Colman, Vanessa Kirby, John Lithgow, Matthew Goode, Gillian Anderson and Jonny Lee Miller.

Why The Crown is like Downton Abbey: Once again, we have a series that’s focused on elite players in British society, although in this case, obviously the monarchy is at the top of the proverbial food chain in British society. In the case of The Crown though, viewers got to see how certain characters’ lives changed across more than half a century, though the actors playing them changed every couple seasons.

Stream The Crown on Netflix.

Bridgerton

Taking place during the Regency era, which lasted roughly from 1795 to 1837, Bridgerton focuses on eight siblings from the title London family who are looking for love amongst other members of high society. Its cast includes folks like Nicola Coughlan, Adjoa Anode and Jonathan Bailey.

Why Bridgerton is like Downton Abbey: While Downton Abbey certainly wasn’t lacking in romantic plots, there’s definitely more emphasis on this kind of storytelling in Bridgerton. Still, fans of the former show will feel quite comfortable in the latter show’s environment following along with this ensemble lineup of characters forming close relationships, and there are even some rivalries thrown in to spice up the drama.

Stream Bridgerton on Netflix.

The Buccaneers

The newest entry on this lineup of shows, The Buccaneers is based on the same-named unfinished novel by Edith Wharton initially published in 1938, and then finished by Marion Mainwaring by 1993. The story follows a group of American women in the 1870s who move to London and experience quite the culture clash. The Buccaneers was previously adapted as a miniseries in 1995, but this version will run for multiple seasons.

Why The Buccaneers is like Downton Abbey: One of the key characters in Downton Abbey is Cora Crawley, Robert Crawley’s wife who hails from the United States. The series never really delved into what it was like for an American living amongst the British since, by the time we met her, she’d already been in England for some time. However, if you’d like to get a sense of how she might have acclimated to her new home, give The Buccaneers a watch.

Stream The Buccaneers on Apple TV+.

Outlander

Rather than being a straightforward historical drama, Outlander also nicely mixes in the fantasy genre. Caitríona Balfe’s Claire Randall, who served as a nurse for the British Army during World War II, is transported from 1945 to 1742 while visiting Scotland with her husband. Upon arriving roughly two centuries in the past though, Claire meets a Highlander named Jamie Fraser, played by Sam Heughan.

Why Outlander is like Downton Abbey: To be sure, Outlander is arguably the most different of the shows on this list from Downton Abbey given its time travel, but it’s nonetheless worth a watch if you’re looking to follow romance in times gone by. Besides, not only does this outlandish premise deliver twice the period piece goodness, quite a bit of time passes between both eras as the series goes on, so you can see how life is like for these characters later on in the 18th and 20th centuries.

Stream Outlander on Starz.
Stream Outlander on Netflix.

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries

In this show that hails from Australia, we follow along with Essie Davis’ Phryne Fisher, a glamorous private detective solving crimes in late 1920s Melbourne. His humble origin story with CinemaBlend began all the way back in the pre-streaming era, circa 2009, as a freelancing DVD reviewer and TV recapper. After rising up through the ranks covering Movies, Nick leapfrogged over to the small screen to cover more and more television news and interviews, eventually taking over the section for the current era. Born in Louisiana and currently living in Texas — Who Dat Nation over America’s Team all day, all night — Nick spent several years in the hospitality industry, and also worked as a 911 operator. And if you ever happened to hear his music or read his comics/short stories, you have his sympathy.

What He's Into: Nick is one of those people who won’t necessarily insert a Monty Python reference into every conversation, but is still mentally equipped to do so. Beyond such appreciation for surreal UK comedy, Nick also indulges in as much horror splendor as possible, from Stephen King novels to James Tynion IV comics to Freddy Krueger one-liners to all things Mike Flanagan. Throw in a dash of NFL, some 311 and Weird Al, fried crawfish poboys, bourbon, ‘90s-era pro wrestling, crossword puzzles and mystery-driven video games, and baby, you got a stew going. (Nick will insert an Arrested Development reference into every conversation, if possible.)

What He's Excited About: Anything Jeff Lemire, Tom King and W. Maxwell Prince think of, ever. More of Kelly Reilly’s deliriously fierce performances on Yellowstone. HBO’s The Last of Us. Clone High’s return. Colin Farrell’s Penguin being in every movie/TV show/breakfast cereal.
</dc:description>

This season sees Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) crossing paths with Donal Logue's King Horik and Thorbjørn Harr's Jarl Borg (sometimes for good and sometimes not)l as favors are asked and bridges are burned. It's only a 10-episode season, so there's no point in going into details. It's a solid and well-produced series that's better than the Game of Thrones comparisons that some have laid on it just because it takes place longer ago than the Victorian Age. The two-hour premiere of the series leaves me wondering if any of those things will have much impact on its success on this side of the pond.

Starting out in 1908, Mr. Selfridge tells the true tale of Harry Gordon Selfridge, an American businessman whose department store revolutionized the way we see shopping. The series begins as Selfridge waltzes into a London department store and proceeds to get a shopgirl fired; thus we meet the newly unemployed Agnes Towler (Aisling Loftus), who will find herself soon hired at Selfridge’s. Meanwhile, Jeremy Piven continues to sweep his way through life with a grin plastered on his face and confidence in his success – at least to all outward appearances. In the first two hours we see only the odd glimpse of what might be behind that mask.

As Mr. Selfridge goes to great lengths to make his dream come true, he leaves his wife (Frances O’Connor) adrift and draws into his sphere the haughty Lady Mae (Katherine Kelly) and Ellen Love (Zoe Tapper), a showgirl with big ambitions. While it may not be fair to compare Mr. Selfridge to Downton Abbey, the setting makes it difficult to avoid. The lives of the store's employees, their petty rivalries and secret lives often reminded me of the staff at Downton, although the sharp contrast between them and the wealthy around them isn’t as evident. What Mr. Selfridge lacks is the comic relief brought by a character like the Dowager Countess of Grantham (Lady Mae tries, but mainly captures the attitude without the laughs), but more than that it seems to lack the heart. There are signs, however, that future episodes may give us more depth.

Mr. Selfridge just finished up its first season run overseas on ITV, and has already been picked up for Season 2, so it’s clear the series is doing well in the U.K. I have to wonder if it will see the same success here, perhaps because Selfridge himself is almost caricature of the overconfident stereotype of an American who believes the world should be his for the asking, a view most Americans don’t find all that flattering. It becomes clear, however, that his man is a very particular and unusual person, and the feeling of watching a stereotype brought to life fades as you watch. Like Downton, Mr. Selfridge aired two episodes in one for the season premiere – a good choice in this case. That second hour is where the characters start to develop. If they continue that way, this series has promise. Whether or not it can come into its own free of the looming shadow of Downton is yet to be seen.

Mr. Selfridge airs Sundays at 9 p.m. EST on PBS.

Two words: Gary Busey! Busey alone is reason enough to tune in to NBC on Sunday, March 3, if only to see what the unpredictable star gets up to next. But then factor in some of the other names on the list, which include Penn Jillette, Bret Michaels, Omarosa, Lisa Rinna and La Toya Jackson and it's anyone's game. Adding to the star power among the contestants are this season's "hosts and advisors," which include Arsenio Hall, Joan Rivers, Piers Morgan and John Rich. That's in addition to Donald Trump and his people (Don, Ivanka and Eric Trump, as well as George Ross).

The fact that these celebrities have played this game before is just part of what makes this "all star" season so exciting. How will their past experiences with the show and the aftermath of playing affect how they play this time around? We'll find out. Beyond that, Celebrity Apprentice is returning! That in itself is something to look forward to as we anticipate a group of celebrities teamed up and attempting to tackle whatever business-related challenges Donald Trump drops in front of them. Anything can happen.

Also...

Grimm has been on a mid-season hiatus since mid-November. At long last, NBC is bringing the excellent fantasy-drama back with its first new episode of what's left of the second season. What's next for Juliette and Renard? And how will Nick deal with the situation? We'll find out when "The Face Off" airs on NBC Friday, March 8.

March Madness

The most satisfying and thrilling of the many annual sporting events, (save the Stanley Cup Finals, of course), is the collegiate basketball tournament affectionately known as March Madness. There really is no better time in sport than the few weeks in March when the best basketball teams in the National Collegiate Athletic Association play it out to decide which one will be declared the best. The 2013 Madness starts on Tuesday, March 19 and concludes with the National Championship on Monday, April 8, with as many of the intense games as possible broadcast on Turner Sports, meaning CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV. And International viewers may luck out by not only getting those networks but also our own affiliates meaning even more coverage of the three week long event.

You really don't want to miss a single moment of the action taking place all across the US because, unlike their pro counterparts, these kids are playing for nothing but pride and a chance to be the last team standing after the 64 team tournament. And even if you’re not particularly invested in the world of sports, the always compelling event also provides a great opportunity to engage in some good natured gambling. Money may be involved but what's really at stake are bragging rights. Shame or glory that you keep until next March. The dates and venues have been set but the bracket's still up in the air, so be sure check with the NCAA March Madness site in the coming weeks for all the information. Who will cut the most important net this year? Go Wildcats! Figure that one out.

Also…

The second season of HBO's Girls has been in a bit of a slump these past few week's but Lena Dunham's series got off to such a great start this year that the finale in just a few weeks time is still a pretty major March television event. "Together," the last episode of the sometimes sensational, sometimes so-so season airs mid-month, on Sunday, March 17 and was co-written by Dunham and Judd Apatow. Even though there are only two installments before the big finale, it's still unclear where the story and characters will end up and who isn't keen to find out? One of the most intriguing new shows of the season, Bates Motel, is set to make its debut on March 18 is A&E's contemporary Psycho prequel from LOST's Carlton Cuse and Friday Night Lights's Kerry Ehrin. Bates Motel skipped the pilot stage, going straight to a ten episode first season order, because of the kind of confidence afforded a show with such a prestigious predecessor like Hitchcock's film, not to mention the fantastic ensemble assembled to play the now iconic parts, Vera Farmiga as Norma Bates and Freddie Highmore as Norman. Don't you want to see what makes us all go a little mad sometimes?

Celebrities make a Splash

I’m not normally the world’s biggest fan of watching celebrities compete in strange reality competitions. In fact, I didn’t even watch the diving special that ran a few months back, but thanks to one widely reported moment, I can’t wait for ABC’s Splash to premiere on Tuesday, March 19. Apparently, former Family Feud host and popular comedian Louie Anderson almost died and had to be saved by Detroit Lions linebacker Ndamukong Suh during one of the practices, and I have to know what the hell happened.

If nothing else, one of the appeals of competition shows is the curveballs life sometimes throws. From Snooki getting punched in the head to Sue Hawk absolutely going off during the finale of Survivor’s inaugural season, the real world is sometimes crazier than anything a writer could come up with. And that, in a swimsuit, is why I’m excited to watch Splash. I need to know exactly what happened. I need to know if the media blew the situation out of proportion or if he legitimately almost died. I need to know exactly what went wrong, and if ABC decides to push it in the promos, I think a lot of people will be with me.

The Voice returns!

For the past three seasons, The Voice has been NBC’s ratings darling, bringing in viewers across different age demographics. However, this season the series faces its first big challenge: veteran judges Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green have left the show for at least a season and have been replaced by Usher and Shakira. I cannot wait to see how the new judges will adjust to their swiveling red chairs, as well as see how the power dynamics between the four judges is or isn’t thrown off balance thanks to the two newbies.

Returning judges Adam Levine and Blake Shelton have emerged over the first three seasons as the most skilled and competent of the group, with one or the other winning each season. In theory, against two new judges who maybe won’t be as aware of what to look for, the two men should continue to dominate, but in practice, some new perspectives might bring some much-needed balance to the show. We’ll see how everything plays out when The Voice premieres on March 25 at 8 p.m. ET.

Also…

Revolution ended the first portion of its season on a good note in the ratings, but also at a high point in the series. We’ve spent some time waiting to see what might happen when the Matheson clan fully unites and it looks like that will be happening when NBC’s hit drama returns to the schedule on March 25 at 10 p.m. ET.

Being Human's final episode of Season 3 is "If I Only Had a Raw Brain." It's a little too soon to tell, but previews for the next new episode suggests a potential zombie twist for Sally, which might be an advance clue to the finale's title. Either way, it's probably not a stretch to predict big things for the Season 3 finale when it airs later in the month. If Season 2's closer put Josh and Sally back to human, will Season 3 turn them back into a werewolf and ghost respectively? We'll find out March 25 when the finale airs on Syfy.

Game of Thrones premiere…

They say March goes in like a lion and out like a lamb, but not this year. On March 31 at 9 p.m. EST, HBO brings back Game of Thrones, which makes us want winter to stick around a bit longer so we can stay inside and watch. We’ve been promised the biggest season yet, with longer episodes and filming locations in five different countries that allows the drama to play out on an enormous scale.

The Season 3 trailer already makes good on some of the promises. Winter is coming fast, as we saw in the Season 2 finale as an army of the dead marched through the north. The war-torn Seven Kingdoms face another claimant to the throne as Danaerys and her quickly-growing dragons cross the water. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The upcoming premiere of Game of Thrones may come on the last day of March, but it will ensure that this month goes out like a Lannister lion.

Also…

And just in case GoT isn’t enough to look forward to on the last day of March, PBS is stepping up as well. First at 8 p.m., the highly-anticipated return of Call the Midwife, one of our best new shows of 2012 premieres.

Right after that, filling the 9 p.m. slot left by Downton Abbey in PBS Sunday night lineup, we’ll get to see the Jeremy Piven-starring new drama Mr. Selfridge. The story of an American department store owner who changes the face of shopping; we’re hearing good things and can’t wait to check it out.

We haven’t even had the chance to get a look at Season 1 here in the U.S., but the British ITV series Mr. Selfridge, starring Jeremy Piven, has earned itself a second season already. From what I’ve been hearing from friends across the pond, Downton Abbey fans are going to love this one when it hits American TV on PBS next month.

Mr. Selfridge centers on American department store magnate Harry Selfridge, whose new thinking about the female shopping experience revolutionizes retail. It launched just last month overseas to a good reception and steady ratings. Today Deadline confirmed that the series has been given the go-ahead for another season, which apparently they were pretty confident about since they had already started writing the new episodes. The second season order is for another 10 episodes to match the first season.

The show is bound to draw some comparisons to Downton; it begins around a similar time period (Downton started with the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, while Mr. Selfridge’s first season starts off in 1908) and has some of the same themes of the very different lives of the upper and lower classes. In this case, it seems we will see both the lives of the store’s employees as well as the store’s clientele, making for a similar upstairs/downstairs feel to that of Downton.

Unlike with Downton, though, we won’t have as long a wait to see it over here. PBS will premiere the first season on March 31st at 9 p.m. EST, only a few weeks after it wraps in the U.K. It also starts just after Season 3 of Downton wraps on PBS and will take over its time slot.

It’s official: Entourage star Jeremy Piven is headed over to ITV to star in Mr. Selfridge. He will play the leading role in the period drama as entrepreneur Harry Gordon Selfridge, the man behind Selfridge’s, a department store designed to appeal to the modern woman of 1909.

Piven had been in talks for the role as the flamboyant American businessman, and now Deadline says the deal has gone through. The plot will focus on Selfridge, who makes it is his goal to “make shopping as exciting as sex” in London just after the turn of the century. “Mile a Minute Harry,” as he is nicknamed, creates a lavish department store aimed at women who are finding themselves with a freedom they have never before enjoyed.

Also cast for the project is Katherine Kelly of Coronation Street as Lady Mae, a socialite who embodies the modern aspects of women Selfridge is aiming to celebrate. She provides important social connections to make Harry’s dreams a reality. Frances O’Connor of Picadilly Jim will play Harry’s wife. Mr. Selfridge is the working title, and it’s all based on a true story, as told in the book Shopping, Seduction, and Mr. Selfridge by Lindy Woodhead.

With Entourage wrapping up, Piven won’t be seeing much downtime, it seems. The success of Downton Abbey here in the U.S. makes this project promising, and with an American as the lead character and star, it should interest U.S. audiences even more. Sadly, we’ll have to wait for the show to hit British television and then make its way over here.

ITV has apparently been on the hunt for a high-profile American actor for the starring role in a series they have set to begin production in April, and they may have found one in Jeremy Piven. Word is, the Entourage star is in talks to star in the 10-episode ITV drama series Mr. Selfridge.

With Entourage having finished its run on HBO, many of us were wondering what Emmy and Golden Globe winning Jeremy Piven would do next. As it turns out, he may be heading over to London for his next TV role. According to Deadline, the star is in talks to play the title role in Mr. Selfridge, a drama based on Lindy Woodhead’s book Shopping, Seduction and Mr. Selfridge. This series is set in 1909 in London and follows “the life of the flamboyant and visionary American entrepreneur, Harry Gordon Selfridge (Piven), and chronicle the launch of his famous London department store Selfridge’s.”

Given the huge success of Downton Abbey, another ITV period piece already sounds appealing. Factor in a star like Piven and it’s likely that people on this side of the pond will be eager to get a look at it. Of course, we have to wait to see if negotiations go through. And then we have to wait for the series to premiere in the U.K. first, which isn’t likely to happen until 2013, and hope it gets picked up over here (Deadline says it will be shopped to U.S.). Still, this is definitely interesting news and it sounds like it could be another great role for Piven, who was a regular scene stealer in HBO’s Entourage.
