Codemasters recently announced that a PC demo of the first-person shooter, Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, has now become available featuring a full mission that can be played in single-player or four-player co-op modes. If you weren't sure about this game before, there's nothing wrong with getting in a little play time with a demo to see if it's worth your hard-earned cash.

According to the press release, regarding the PC demo…

As part of a Special Forces squad inserting behind Chinese PLA lines, players must eliminate a strategically critical radar station and missile sites to allow the USS Iwo Jima, carrying the main USMC battalion, to safely approach the island of Skira.

The game features advanced tactical A.I., vehicular operation, destructible environments, and realistic-inspired combat. You could say it’s a less action-packed version of Modern Warfare 2 yet a more dynamic version of Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter.

In addition to the PC demo becoming available a few new Operation Flashpoint items for the XBL avatars have also become available. You can check out the avatar items at the XBL Marketplace.

For more info on the Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising PC demo feel free to visit the Official Website.

How often do you upgrade your PC: Every month? Every six months? Once a year? If you’re a hardcore PC gamer it’s almost an absolute necessity to upgrade or replace your gaming hardware about every other year if you even want a newer game to boot on your PC or laptop. The problem, however, is that games seem to be accelerating in graphics and visual quality faster than the prices are dropping for the hardware required to run them.

For roughly $500 a gamer can buy a brand new desktop with duo core 2.5ghz capabilities and a graphics card that’s more powerful alone than two top-end computers combined from 1999. The dilemma, however, is that a brand new $500 computer in this day and age still isn’t enough to run a brand new PC game at an acceptable framerate, such as Fallen Earth or Shattered Horizon.

Now, places like Best Buy or Amazon actually have gaming computers designated for at least six good months of non-upgradeable hardware for the latest PC games. However, the price starts at the $1,000 mark and works upward. In some regards, it’s now easy to see why the Xbox 360 and PS3 are easily favored for gaming needs, especially when you consider that the cost of a PC has nothing whatsoever to do with paying for a good cable/T1/wireless connection for your online gaming desires.

It’s kind of funny because the problem is actually kind of two-fold: On one hand we have developers pushing new boundaries in small and large projects that encourage PC gamers to extend their PC functionality with new hardware, while at the same time we’ve sort of hit a bump in the road when it comes to [affordable] new hardware that meets the demands of the ever-evolving software.

What’s also ironic about this situation is that when the PS3 first came out it cost about as much as a fairly high-end PC during that time and people complained about the price versus functionality of Sony’s new console. However, time tells a different story now that the PS3 is fully saturated within the market and can still run top-end games with ease. Come 2010, PS3 owners will be able to run a game like Aliens Vs Predator or DC Universe Online without having to touch any of the hardware. Can PC gamers say the same with a PC they bought for $700 back in 2006?

Well, you’ll probably be able to run Modern Warfare 2 with that system but good luck playing any games designed for Windows Vista and DirectX 10 such as Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, Wolfenstein or Dragon Age: Origins. Oh, and you can probably completely forget about running 2010 games like APB, The Secret World or the graphics heavy TERA Online. You may as well cough up an arm and leg and buy an Alienware computer in that case.

So what’s the solution for PC gamers who want to play hardcore games but don’t want to break their backs upgrading every couple of months? Well, there’s no easy answer but you can check out some inexpensive gaming accessories right here at Blend Games or drop by New Egg for fairly affordable PC hardware. However, this solution probably won't fix the problem once high-end PC games start hitting shelves in late 2010.

Codemasters recently released a new trailer for Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, which features some of the snazzy, operable vehicles in the game. And as always, the trailer is here and available for viewing at Blend Games.

Already Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising has been receiving a boat load of positive feedback from across the gaming spectrum (i.e., both gaming journalist and gamers alike). It’s not surprising at the least given the game’s immersive visual quality and high-end take on realistic, real-time combat. In other words, this game rocks.

You can check out the new vehicle(s) trailer below which features, yep, vehicles. The physics, cockpit quality and weapons mechanics all look top-notch for this game. Looks like Ubisoft has an uphill climb ahead of them with the next Ghost Recon if they even want to stay in the same league of military first-person combat.
Codemasters has sent out a six-pack of new screenshots for their upcoming military shooter Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. It should sate your hourly urge to look at virtual guys with guns.

The first Operation Flashpoint used the Real Virtuality engine but Dragon Rising's powered by Codemasters' proprietary EGO engine. EGO was previously used in the racing games DiRT and GRID and seems to be working pretty well here, too. Those tanks, helicopters, and APC's aren't just part of the scenery - you'll be able to control those and many other vehicles in the full game.

Dragon Rising will be released for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 this summer. Supposedly all three platforms will get a demo before then.

Codemasters has finally confirmed that, in addition to the PC, Operation: Flashpoint: Dragon Rising will also hit Xbox 360 and PS3. They also announced that the military shooter will arrive this Summer.

Dragon Rising is set in the near future on the Skira Island, an island in the Pacific discovered to have massive oil reserves. China annexes the territory and NATO launches an attack to retake the island. As with the first Operation Flashpoint from a few years back, Dragon is a realistic, team-based shooter that allows the player to use a wide range of vehicles and weapons to accomplish their objectives. The game world is said to feature over 30,000 square miles of terrain.

Dragon is powered by the EGO Engine, which Codemasters developed and also used in the racing games Colin McRae: DiRT and Race Driver: GRID. Accompanying today's press release was a new OFP:DR trailer that showed off the capabilities of the engine. You can check it out below.
