Sophia Bush has made a splash on Grey’s Anatomy, with her character Cass Beckman earning quite the reputation for making waves in the Seattle surgeons’ relationships. It’s likely we haven’t seen the last of her, either, after that unexpected Season 22 finale cliffhanger, and it sounds like she’s already thinking about Season 23’s return to the 2026 TV schedule this fall.

In fact, she pitched one of her One Tree Hill co-stars as the next perfect addition to Grey’s Anatomy, and I know exactly where they’d fit in.

Sophia Bush Thinks James Lafferty Should Join Grey’s Anatomy

Cass Beckman made a surprise return to Grey’s Anatomy Season 22, providing much-needed help in the wake of a bridge collapse that left Nick Marsh’s life in her hands. Later, however, it’s revealed that she ended up in bed with Amelia Shepherd. That sounds like some Brooke Davis behavior to me, and speaking of One Tree Hill, Sophia Bush had an idea about another actor who could make the jump over to Grey Sloan Memorial. She told EW:

First of all, it is kind of crazy how naturally One Tree Hill’s actors flow into the Grey’s Anatomy-verse, with Hilarie Burton playing Dr. Lauren Boswell on three episodes of Season 9 (and also being the real-life wife of Denny Duquette actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Bethany Joy Lenz, meanwhile, had a short-but-memorable storyline as the new fiancée of Jo’s abusive ex-husband Paul in Season 14 and Jana Kramer also appeared on two episodes of Season 4.

More importantly, though, Sophia Bush is so right that James Lafferty has major McDreamy vibes, and I think he should totally lean into that.

James Lafferty Should Play Another McDreamy Nephew — A Rival To Cousin Lucas

On One Tree Hill, James Lafferty played Nathan Scott, one of the titular high school’s star basketball players and half-brother to Chad Michael Murray’s Lucas. On Grey’s Anatomy, I think he should have another kind of familial drama with a different Lucas — McDreamy’s favorite nephew Lucas Adams (Niko Terho).

With Derek Shepherd having four sisters and a family full of medical professionals, it would make a lot of sense for Lucas to have cousins who are also doctors. James Lafferty could play one of them, giving ole McBroody another chance to feel less-than amongst his family and peers.

How Did James Lafferty React To Sophia Bush’s Suggestion?

Word got back to the Everyone Is Doing Great creator that he was being pitched as a possible McDreamy 2.0, and James Lafferty had a pretty funny response, telling EW:

I don’t know, I think that brand of humility in the face of something he seems so right for is exactly the kind of thing that would endear Grey’s Anatomy fans to a character — and drive Lucas Adams bonkers.

Only time will tell if Sophia Bush has that kind of sway behind the scenes of the longtime medical drama, but I hope Meg Marinis is listening — even as she works on that Grey’s Anatomy Texas spinoff — because I think James Lafferty could be a really fun addition.

Since Eric Dane's passing, tributes have flooded in from all corners of Hollywood. Former co-stars, like Grey’s vet Katherine Heigl, longtime friends, and devoted fans have shared stories, favorite scenes, and personal memories. Patrick Dempsey joined the heartfelt tributes as well, and he recently reflected on Dane's death and the overwhelming public response it got. He also offered a sincere perspective on what the late star might think about the outpouring of love.

Patrick Dempsey was candid about how grief has touched his life in recent years, and how that context informs the way he sees the reaction to Eric Dane’s death during an interview with NewstalkFM. In his words:

Losing a parent at a young age, and more recently his mother, has given Dempsey an intimate understanding of how grief lingers and resurfaces. Add to that the loss of several friends within the past year, and it’s clear why Dane’s death hit especially hard. But amid that sorrow, the Ferrari actor focused on the knowledge that Dane understood how much he meant to people.

So often, tributes arrive too late for the person at the center of them to hear the praise. According to Dempsey, many fans and colleagues made a point of expressing their appreciation directly to the late HBO star while they still had the chance. The response following his death only amplified that message. Social media timelines quickly filled with scenes from his career, interviews that showcased his humor and warmth, and behind-the-scenes snapshots from sets he once called home. Former castmates shared statements that painted a picture of someone generous with his time and spirit.

Eric Dane died on February 19, 2026, less than a year after being diagnosed with ALS. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters. Though the longtime television favorite and Gayheart separated in 2018, they remained close until he passed away. Following the Last Ship star’s death, a family friend launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover mounting medical expenses, as he had been unable to take on as much work as he would have liked during his illness.

Patrick Dempsey and Eric Dane shared the Grey’s Anatomy screen for seven seasons. Mark Sloan first appeared late in Season 2 before becoming a series regular from Seasons 3 through 9, later returning for a cameo in Season 17. As McDreamy and McSteamy, the two played a now-iconic duo of heartthrob surgeons whose on-screen chemistry became a defining part of the series.

Though years had passed since they last appeared together on the show, their connection extended beyond the hospital halls of Grey’s Anatomy. The actors reportedly stayed in touch, reconnecting privately over the years, and had even discussed the possibility of a reunion after the Euphoria actor’s ALS diagnosis.

Grey’s Anatomy is still on the air, now deep into its 22nd season on the 2026 TV schedule, but for many viewers, the early years hold a special place in their hearts. Those seasons that introduced McDreamy and McSteamy remain some of the show’s most talked-about chapters. Patrick Dempsey may now be starring in Fox’s Memory of a Killer on the 2026 TV schedule, but the actor will forever be known as Derek Shepherd, a.k.a. McDreamy, on Grey’s Anatomy. He spent the first 11 seasons of the medical drama saving lives and making fans swoon like Meredith Grey. It’s truly a defining role in his career, so it's hard to imagine anyone else playing him. However, it turns out Rob Lowe was up for the part and turned it down.

How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Grey’s Anatomy by Lynette Rice digs deep into the behind-the-scenes stories of the longest-running primetime medical drama, including casting. In an excerpt from the book, per EW, executive producer Peter Horton revealed that Dempsey was not ABC’s first choice for Derek. They wanted Lowe first:

Considering Lowe chose between Grey’s and Dr. Vegas, and went with the latter, which was pulled after only five episodes had aired, it’s crazy to think how different things could have been had he gone with the ABC drama. It's also wild to think that the network didn't initially want Dempsey, considering the fan-favorite he became.

McDreamy wouldn’t be McDreamy without Dempsey. Luckily, it all worked out in the end, and Lowe has no regret over his choice, despite how things turned out, as he said:

Some things are just meant to be, and Patrick Dempsey was meant to play Derek Shepherd, and it really impacted his career and the fans. It’s possible that if that didn’t happen, Grey’s wouldn’t be where it is today. And it’s not like Lowe didn’t get other great roles after Dr. Vegas failed. He has stayed steady on television for decades, with main roles, recurring roles, and guest roles on all sorts of series, like Parks and Recreation and 9-1-1: Lone Star. Now, he is currently hosting The Floor on Fox, which was recently renewed for two seasons.

Meanwhile, even though Derek was tragically killed off towards the end of Season 11, he made a surprise appearance during Season 17, briefly recurring when Meredith had COVID and dreamt of being on the beach with her lost loved ones. Whether or not Dempsey will ever return again, especially with his new show, is unknown, but stranger things have happened. And while we're dreaming, it would be fun if Lowe appeared on Grey’s, even for an episode, just to fulfill that “What if?” and see what the hospital would have been like with him running around.

Dr. Vegas may have only run for one season, but it might have been the best decision Rob Lowe made, because if not for him and the producers pushing for Patrick Dempsey, who knows what could have happened. Fans can look back at their favorite McDreamy moments with a Hulu subscription, knowing that the role went to the perfect actor.

Heartbreaking news hit the entertainment industry on Thursday, when Eric Dane’s family confirmed that the 53-year-old actor had passed away less than a year after he revealed that he’d been diagnosed with ALS. Dane was known for series like Euphoria and his appearance on Brilliant Minds, where his portrayal of a character with ALS earned him a standing ovation from the cast and crew. For many, though, Dane was best known as Mark Sloan, aka “McSteamy” from Grey’s Anatomy, and many former co-stars from the medical drama paid tribute following the sad news.

With James Pickens Jr. being one of only two Grey’s Anatomy stars serving as series regulars on all 22 seasons, he was there for all of Eric Dane’s 145 episodes. Pickens posted a photo to Instagram Stories in remembrance of the actor:

Eric Dane joined Grey’s Anatomy in Season 2 and was a series regular through Season 8, with Mark Sloan getting killed off at the beginning of Season 9. McSteamy made a posthumous return in Season 17 alongside other killed-off characters like Lexie Grey, George O’Malley and Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd.

McDreamy and McSteamy were best friends on Grey’s Anatomy (when one wasn’t sleeping with the other’s wife, at least), and according to Patrick Dempsey, that friendship existed off-camera as well. Speaking on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on February 20, the actor laughed as he described Eric Dane as “the funniest man” and “such a joy to work with,” but admitted:

Eric Dane said in June 2025 that it made him “angry” that ALS was going to take him away from his two teenage daughters, and it’s devastating to think of what his family is going through and what they've already been through.

Patrick Dempsey said he hopes to just remember his friend's spirit and how “he brought so much fun to” the Grey’s Anatomy set. He continued:

Kevin McKidd, meanwhile, released a statement to Page Six, also acknowledging Eric Dane’s humor and saying that no matter how long it’s been since he appeared on the show, his portrayal of Mark “McSteamy” Sloan will always be an important part of Grey’s Anatomy’s history. The Owen Hunt actor said:

After announcing his diagnosis in April 2025, Eric Dane continued to act (and will reportedly appear on the long-awaited Euphoria Season 3) and advocate for other families affected by ALS. The above tributes and those from other former colleagues who championed his “fight not flight” attitude show how much Dane will be missed.

Grey’s Anatomy may be going strong, with its 22nd season airing on the 2026 TV schedule, but many longtime fans remain nostalgic for those epic early years. Not only did you have the MAGIC of Meredith, Alex, George, Izzie and Cristina, you had the dynamic duo of heartthrob surgeons McDreamy and McSteamy. It’s been a long time since Patrick Dempsey and Eric Dane shared the screen, but apparently the actors had talked about a reunion.

Patrick Dempsey, who starred as Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd for the first 11 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, has a new series — Memory of a Killer — which premiered this month on Fox (and can be streamed with a Hulu subscription). While promoting the crime drama, he was asked about Eric Dane, who revealed last April that he’d been diagnosed with ALS. It turns out the two have been in touch recently, as Dempsey told Parade:

It’s heartbreaking to hear that Eric Dane (aka Mark “McSteamy” Sloan) was unable to reconnect with his former Grey’s co-star, but I love that the reunion was even an option.

The actor has continued to work amidst his health issues, filming series like Countdown, the long-awaited and highly anticipated Euphoria Season 3, and — as Patrick Dempsey mentioned — an episode of Brilliant Minds.

In the Brilliant Minds Season 2 episode “The Fire Fighter” (streaming with a Peacock subscription), Eric Dane plays a firefighter who’s wrestling with how to tell his family about his own ALS diagnosis. Brilliant Minds showrunner Michael Grassi said the cast and crew were so touched by Dane’s vulnerable performance that he received a standing ovation and 10-minute clap-out after his scene wrapped.

Patrick Dempsey went on to commend his former Grey’s Anatomy co-star for the man he is and the awareness he’s bringing to ALS. He continued:

In addition to not being able to cameo in Memory of a Killer, Eric Dane also missed a planned appearance at the Emmy Awards in September after suffering a fall before the ceremony. Jesse Williams went on to present an award during what was supposed to be a Grey’s Anatomy tribute.

Eric Dane made his premiere as McSteamy on ABC’s medical drama in Season 2, lasting through Season 9 before he was killed off — with McDreamy joining him in the afterlife just two seasons later. It’s been over a decade since we lost those sexy surgeons, yet they remain two of Grey’s Anatomy’s most shocking and heartbreaking deaths.

While it’s tough to hear updates about Eric Dane’s ALS progressing, it warms my heart to know that he’s still in touch with Patrick Dempsey, and that they’d even considered a reunion on the new Fox series.

Now, in his new series Memory of a Killer on Fox — premiering on the 2026 TV schedule on January 25 — the doctor has become the patient. Dempsey plays Angelo, an assassin with suspected early onset dementia who, until now, has managed to keep his work separate from his personal life. Critics are sharing their thoughts on the Fox crime drama, and they're similarly split up.

Memory of a Killer is loosely based on the 2003 Belgian movie The Alzheimer’s Case, and Liam Matthews of The Wrap says the two episodes provided to critics are juggling a lot of plot. However, the action moves at a brisk pace, and it’s thrilling to see McDreamy committing brutal murders (quite a change of pace for an actor whose best roles are rom-coms). The series shows promise if it can keep from biting off more than it can chew, the critic says, writing:

Billy Fellows of Collider also likes the premiere episodes, giving the series so far an 8 out of 10. The critic finds the Alzheimer’s aspect of the plot an interesting take on the trope of killers seeing their dirty deeds bleed into their personal lives. Fellows says:

Daniel Fienberg of THR, however, says Memory of a Killer gets “too silly too quickly,” with the former Sexiest Man Alive being too ludicrously slick to be a believable assassin. Also, with all of its rough edges sanded down for network TV, it’s not as enjoyable as it could be. Fienberg’s review reads:

Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert notes that there’s very little character-building for Angelo beyond “assassin, father, patient,” and the critic doubts the first two episodes’ issues are the kinds that will even out as the series progresses. Tallerico writes:

Keith Phipps of TV Guide is also lukewarm on the new Fox series, rating it a 6.4 out of 10. While Memory of a Killer is fast-paced with solid production value and a solid cast, the command it has over the sensitive subject of dementia is a bit unsure in the first two episodes. Phipps continues:

It seems like critics think there’s quite a bit of promise from Memory of a Killer, even if some aren’t optimistic about the longevity of its premise. As a Grey’s Anatomy fan myself, I won't mind seeing Patrick Dempsey back on network TV again. Check out the trailer below.

It's a great time to be a horror fan like me, as the genre has been thriving for a number of years now. Some of the best horror movies returned to theaters with new installments, including Wes Craven's beloved Scream. A seventh movie is on the way, and while I could handle the upcoming horror movie's casting shakeups, I've got to say that Patrick Dempsey not being back as Mark Kincaid just sucks.

What we know about Scream 7 is limited, but casting news is coming out regularly, usually involving (dead) legacy characters. While Patrick Dempsey admitted he was in talks to finally reprise his role, news of Joel McHale playing Sidney's husband (also named Mark) put the kibosh on that. And in the process, a years-long fan theory that Kincaid and Sidney got married ended. As a hardcore fan I think this is just a huge bummer.

This isn't a shot at McHale; he's a strong actor who has shone in horror projects like Assassination Nation. But it feels purposeful that "Mark" was name-dropped as Sidney's husband in the 2022 Scream, especially since Patrick Dempsey's character was still alive in-universe. Add in the fact that the Grey's Anatomy alum was in talks to return, and the fact that now we're just getting a new character with the same name feels like a let down.

Despite Patrick Dempsey returning to the horror genre with Thanksgiving (streaming with a Netflix subscription) and Dexter: Original Sin, it seemed like the perfect time for him to finally appear in Scream for the first time since the third movie. We'll just have to wait for a reason why this didn't work out.

Truly, it seems like Scream 7 director Kevin Williamson is focused on bringing back unexpected legacy characters for the slasher. Over the past weeks there have been reports about Matthew Lillard, Scott Foley, and even David Arquette returning to the franchise, despite their characters dying. Moviegoers are curious about how these appearances will factor into the story, and unfortunately the Patrick Dempsey-related FOMO is likely going to stick around for the long haul.

As previously mentioned, I'm sure Joel McHale will be excellent in Scream 7. He's definitely got the charm and acting chops to pull of playing Sidney's long unseen husband in the forthcoming sequel. We'll just have to wait and see if he manages to survive coming face to face with Ghostface for the first time. After all, people close to Neve Campbell's final girl tend to meet the pointy end of a knife.

Scream 7 doesn't currently have a release date, but it's expected to arrive in 2026 rather than part of the 2025 movie release list. While we wait for news, the last two movies are streaming with a Paramount+ subscription.

The horror renaissance is showing no signs of slowing down, and some of the best horror movies have returned to theaters with new sequels. That includes Wes Craven's Scream, with a seventh movie currently in development. The cast is coming together, with fans thrilled Neve Campbell is back as Sidney Prescott for the upcoming horror movie. Joel McHale was recently cast, and his role destroys a popular fan theory.

What we know about Scream 7 is limited, and each new casting news is breaking the internet. The latest comes to us from Deadline, which revealed that McHale is joining the next sequel as Sidney's husband Mark Evans. But fans had assumed that the "Mark" she mentioned in the 2022 movie was actually Patrick Dempsey's Mark Kincaid from Scream 3. Alas, this latest casting news put the kibosh on that possible pairing, which is something fans have thought was canon for years.

It seems all but impossible that Patrick Dempsey will appear in Scream 7, despite fans wanting to catch up with his character. Back in October, Dempsey said he as waiting on a script, but seemed down to reprise his role years later. But perhaps negotiations failed, leading to Joel McHale to step in as Sidney's husband, who will be an entirely new character altogether.

Mark Kincaid was one of many Scream legacy characters who longtime fans are eager to see return to the slasher property. The seventh movie's cast list is still coming together, so only time will tell if any of them sign on the dotted line. But moviegoers can rest easy knowing both OGs Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox will be back in action for the movie.

With Joel McHale's newcomer confirmed as Sidney's husband, I'm eager to learn more about the couple's story. The 2022 movie confirmed that Campbell's signature character was married and with kids, but the details of her backstory since the fourth movie weren't revealed. But now that Sidney is once again at the center of the franchise, Scream 7 should presumably fill in those blanks.

Neve Campbell was noticeably missing from Scream VI, shifting even more of the franchise's focus on the Carpenter Sisters. Unfortunately, both Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera aren't returning for the next movie, which will presumably result in Sidney Prescott once again becoming the protagonist/final girl of the property. While Mason Gooding was confirmed to return as Chad Meeks-Martin, fans are still waiting on whether or not his onscreen twin Jasmin Savoy Brown will also be back as Mindy... especially since she's taken on the Randy-esuqe horror fan role in the franchise.

Scream 7 is currently expected to arrive in theaters on February 27th, 2026. For now, check the 2025 movie release dates to plan your trips to the movies this year.

Grey’s Anatomy’s return amidst other 2025 TV premieres will mark 20 years since its March 2005 premiere. Loyal fans have seen many doctors come and go in that time, but arguably no exit was as jarring as Derek Shepherd’s — the result of Patrick Dempsey’s allegedly “terrorizing” behavior on set. I remember despising the kill-off episode — Season 11’s “How to Save a Life” — and the 10th anniversary of McDreamy’s death inspired a full rewatch to see if my feelings changed.

Sure enough, they did, but not in a good way. I still hated it, and I now have 3 big reasons why the installment was even more infuriating after years of hindsight.

Flash back to April 23, 2015. My then-job didn't require me to keep up with behind-the-scenes drama of shows like Grey’s Anatomy, but I recall knowing it was likely Patrick Dempsey’s swan song. I was curious how the show would continue without Derek, but wasn’t particularly upset to be losing him. Ultimately, though, I was in disbelief by such a vital character's death being handled so haphazardly, and I felt that again rewatching it for the first time in a decade, with three big takeaways.

Derek’s Collision With The Truck Looks Ridiculous

I found myself rolling my eyes pretty often at the cheesy dialogue in “How to Save a Life,” but the first time I watched Derek’s car get hit by that truck 10 years ago, I recall letting out a shocked laugh at how terrible the effects looked. My memory wasn’t playing tricks on me, either; it was that bad, especially when compared to the effects-driven wreck that came just minutes before, featuring multiple flipping vehicles from different camera angles. Maybe they blew their budget on that?

Of course I think it was stupid that Derek pulled his car onto the road, blocking both lanes while stopping to look for his buzzing cellphone. (The lack of cell service was also repeatedly established, so having his phone ring made no sense.) The whole thing felt very much like a commercial warning teens about the dangers of texting and driving. However, at least human fallacy is believable. My real problem is with the truck.

Honestly, where did the truck come from? Because it didn’t blow its big 18-wheeler air horn until it was on top of McDreamy’s car. Did it come around a blind curve? If so, how and why was it going fast enough to skewer Seattle’s top brain surgeon? Perhaps due to the mysterious lack of seemingly any other vehicles on that particular road.

Plus, just look at the photo above. Where is the back of the truck? I feel like there should be more truck that keeps us from seeing sky and trees out of the back window.

Derek’s Narration Of His Impending Death Doesn’t Make Sense

I really didn’t like listening to Patrick Dempsey as Derek Shepherd narrating everything the doctors were doing wrong. At first, though, it made sense. When he got to Dillard Medical Center and was conscious but couldn’t speak, I totally bought his internal monologue explaining what he would do — and therefore what those doctors should do — as they initially treated him. When it stopped making sense was when they took him to surgery and put him under anaesthesia. Why are you still talking to us, Derek?

I’m certain there are plenty of Grey’s Anatomy fans who found it soul-crushing to hear Derek Shepherd say his final words when the trauma surgeon finally got to the hospital — “It’s too late. You’re too late.” — or McDreamy’s decidedly more impactful quote from midway through the episode:

I get it; it is sad. However, being able to know Derek’s final thoughts made the death less impactful than the utter chaos of, say, George O’Malley’s equally sudden death. We don’t know what was going through his head, which made it all the more torturous when we looked into his desperate eyes as he wrote “007” on Meredith’s hand with his finger. That was the shocking Grey’s Anatomy death its male lead deserved. What Derek got was less impactful because he literally told us over and over it was coming.

The Fakeout That Derek Had Survived Was So Cheap

The writers did attempt to make it less predictable by allowing us to think for a minute that Derek had beaten the odds and survived the surgery. We see Meredith arrive at the hospital and chide her very awake, very alive husband for scaring her, before climbing into his hospital bed and curling up next to him with a sleepy smile. Then we snap back to reality and realize the scene was merely a fantasy, and Meredith is still at her house with the officers informing her of the accident.

I can appreciate the parallels to Izzie Stevens and Denny Duquette in the imagery, but I think this was a pretty cheap way to get people’s hopes up before bringing in Meredith to take him off life support.

Other Questions I Have About ‘How To Save A Life’

Those are my big issues with “How to Save a Life,” but they’re not the only ones I’m left with 10 years after McDreamy’s final episode as a series regular. (He would, of course, make a surprising return to Meredith in dream form in Season 17.) Here are a couple more questions:

• Does the timing work? It was established in the previous episode “One Flight Down” that Meredith would wait until 5 p.m. to panic over Derek’s whereabouts. When the clock hit 5, she picked up the phone, only to see police cars pulling up to inform her of the accident. In the next episode, she arrives at the hospital after Derek has been declared brain dead following a surgery that started — according to a clock on the OR wall — after 8:55 p.m. Dillard Medical Center was supposedly near Puget Sound, which is only 90ish minutes away from Seattle (per Google Maps), so why did it take over four hours for Meredith to get there?
• Who’s really to blame for Derek’s death? At first we’re meant to blame Penny Blake (Samantha Sloyan) and her colleague Paul Castello (Mike McColl) at Dillard for failing to order a head CT for Derek; however, we later learn that McDreamy might have lived if trauma surgeon Dr. Cohn hadn’t chosen to finish his dinner before going to the hospital, taking an hour and a half to get there, rather than the expected 20 minutes. Meredith says, “Perfect Penny killed my husband” in Season 12 before literally killing Paul with one of Grey’s Anatomy’s most epic “Shondalogues” in Season 16. Why is Dr. Cohn getting off scot-free?

Regardless of if you share my opinion of this episode or not, it’s inarguable that “How to Save a Life” was a turning point in Grey’s Anatomy’s history. It’s not often that a series kills off its male lead and probably even more rare that it would go on for 10 more seasons (and counting!) after doing so.

Grey’s Anatomy has officially said goodbye to Jake Borelli as a series regular, with his episodes on the 2024 TV schedule marking the end of a seven-season run as fan favorite doctor Levi Schmitt. It’s been a memorable ride for the actor, whose character went from the clumsy intern known as “Glasses” to becoming one of Grey’s Anatomy’s most iconic queer characters. As he reflected on his time on the show, one memory that stuck out to him involved one of the series’ biggest shockers, and what made it so noteworthy is that he experienced it the same way the fans did — when the episode aired.

Flash back to 2020, Meredith’s storyline on the Season 17 premiere reflected real times, with Ellen Pompeo’s character getting COVID. While she was unconscious, she retreated to a beach in her mind, and at the end of the episode, she encounters none other than McDreamy himself — her late husband Derek Shepherd — who died in Season 11. Except, that’s not what happened in the script Jake Borelli and Grey’s Anatomy co-star Jaicy Elliot had read. As Borelli told BuzzFeed:

It sounds like their reaction to Patrick Dempsey’s return to Grey’s Anatomy was pretty much the same as every other person who was watching that night, except Jaicy Elliot and Jake Borelli might have even been more surprised, because they had expected to see Ellis Grey (Kate Burton), not Derek-freaking-Shepherd!

Then-showrunner Krista Vernoff has admitted to pulling one over on the cast for the sake of keeping that huge moment a secret, saying she kept writers’ assistants out of the writer’s room during that time, and the cuts she sent to studio didn’t include that scene. During the table read — as Jake Borelli mentioned — the scripts said “Ellis Grey,” and Vernoff had instructed Ellen Pompeo to say, “Mom,” rather than “Derek,” in those breath-taking final seconds.

It definitely made for a memorable experience, not just for fans, but apparently for the cast and crew as well.

Jake Borelli’s exit from Grey’s Anatomy was announced ahead of Season 21 amid budget cuts at ABC, and while some fans have been frustrated over losing series regulars like him and Midori Francis, at least Levi went out on a high note.

We’ve got a while to wait before the medical drama returns, with its spring premiere set to air on ABC’s 2025 TV schedule at 10 p.m. ET Thursday, March 6. Woody Allen’s monologue in the opening minutes of Manhattan is honestly one of the best cinematic moments of the ‘70s and features some of Allen’s best writing. That’s saying something considering the writer-director-actor has been a part of so many great rom-coms over the years. Annie Hall, Midnight in Paris, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and Hannah and her Sisters have made us laugh, cry, and feel everything in between over the past 50-plus years.

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway’s name doesn’t come up in the rom-com discussion as much as it should, which is a shame considering the Oscar-winning actress has killed it in movies like The Princess Diaries, Ella Enchanted, Love & Other Drugs, and so many others. Yeah, she was great in Interstellar and Les Misérables, but there’s no denying her performances in these romantic comedies.

Okay, Morris Chestnut was AMAZING in Boyz n the Hood with his portrayal of Ricky Baker, but the man has become a legend in the rom-com game over the past few decades. Two Can Play That Game, The Best Man, The Brothers, The Perfect Holiday, Breakin’ All the Rules are all classics, thanks in no small part to Chestnut’s performances.

Rachel McAdams’ career has been full of swirling tales of romance like The Notebook, The Vow, and Disobedience, but some of her best work has been in romantic comedies. Patrick Dempsey

From Can’t Buy Me Love to Made of Honor and everything in between, Patrick Dempsey has been a tour de force in the world of romantic comedies. He’s done great work on TV and in big-screen dramas over the years, but he particularly excels in the rom-com genre.

The horror genre has been thriving for years, to the joy of fans like myself. Some of the best horror movies returned with new sequels, including Scream. A seventh film is in development, and is one of the most highly anticipated upcoming horror movies. But is Patrick Dempsey actually returning to the role of Mark Kincaid? Here's the latest from the Grey's Anatomy icon.

What we know about Scream 7 is very limited, but the longtime fanbase was thrilled when it was confirmed that Neve Campbell was returning as Sidney Prescott, after being noticeably absent from Scream VI. While appearing on The Today Show, Dempsey was asked if he's coming back as Sidney's husband. He responded:

Well, that seems pretty hopeful. While he hasn't signed on the dotted line, Dempsey has in fact been in talks to finally reprise his character from Scream 3 (which is streaming with a Max subscription) for the first time. Hopefully he inks a deal soon, and we get to see what Sidney and Mark are like as a married couple. The pair were confirmed to be married with kids in 2022's Scream.

As Dempsey mentioned, Campbell played one of McDreamy's sisters in Grey's Anatomy, years after they met and worked together on the third Scream film. They seem to have great chemistry, and Mark is a Scream legacy character that fans have been wanting to see back onscreen for a long time. Later in the same appearance on Today, he seemingly made it clear he'd be down for the Scream 7 gig, saying:

Touche. It does seem like the right time to bring Dempsey back into the Scream franchise. After Dewey's death in the fifth movie, there's an open slot for a legacy character in Scream 7. And since Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega both won't be back, the film could use some extra star power.

McDreamy returned to the slasher genre with a major role in Thanksgiving, which is streaming now with a Netflix subscription. So why not once again face off against Ghostface, and work with Neve Campbell again in the process? If so, we'll just have to see if he survives the horror movie.

Scream 7 is currently expected to arrive in theaters on February 27, 2026. For now, check the 2025 movie release dates to plan your next scary movie.

It remains a great time to be a horror fan, as the genre's renaissance is showing no signs of slowing down. Some of the best horror movies have returned to theaters as a result, including the Scream franchise. Moviegoers are eager for information about the upcoming horror movie Scream 7, which will once again put Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott front and center. We don't know much, but it's fun to see Campbell's face when asked if Patrick Dempsey will return for the next installment.

What we know about Scream 7 is super limited, as the script reportedly hasn't even been finished yet. The last two movies (which are available to stream with a Paramount+ subscription) brought back characters from original four films, and there are a number of Scream legacy characters I'd like to see return. Chief among them is Patrick Dempsey's Mark Kincaid, especially since he's married to Sidney in-universe. Campbell was recently asked by ET (via Twitter) about the concept of the Grey's Anatomy icon appearing in the next film, and her reaction was adorable. Check it out below:

Well, I'm definitely intrigued. While Neve was careful not to reveal anything (and the casting process is probably still happening), it certainly seems like Dempsey would be a logical inclusion for Scream 7's cast. I have to wonder how much she knows that she's not letting on, but the reaction will likely inspire hope from fans who have been waiting for the Scream 3 character to finally return to the big screen.

During 2022's Scream, dialogue between Sydney and Dewey revealed that she eventually married Mark Kincaid, and they have a family together. As such, fans have been waiting for him to return. And aside from their work together in the third movie, Neve Campbell appeared as one of McDreamy's sisters in Grey's Anatomy. As you can see in the video above, when asked by Patrick Dempsey having a role in Scream 7, she Campbell said:

From the little information we know about the seventh Scream film, it sounds like the franchise will go back to its roots and focus on Sidney's story. She had fairly limited screen time in the 2022 movie, while Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute. Although with OG writer Kevin Williamson serving as director for the upcoming slasher, perhaps it should be no surprise that Sid is at the center of the narrative.

Of course, fans like myself are wondering who else might make up the movie's cast. With Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega both out, I'm particularly curious about if/how the other two members of the Core Four will be included. I adored Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding as Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin, and will be super bummed if they're not in on the bloody fun.

Scream 7 doesn't currently have a release date, but the last two movies are both streaming now. While we wait for an update, check the 2025 movie release dates.

Patrick Dempsey is no longer McDreamy, now, he's more like McHorror. The actor starred in Eli Roth’s critically acclaimed slasher film Thanksgiving last year, proving that he's made for this genre. While some people probably thought that this step back into the scream-filled world could have been a one-and-done for him, Dempsey has officially booked his next horror role, and he can thank Thanksgiving for such a great transition.

Variety reported that Dempsey has landed the role of Aaron Spencer, the Miami Metro Homicide captain in Dexter: Original Sin. According to UPROXX, the Dexter prequel series takes place 15 years prior to the events of the original series and follows a young Dexter Morgan who “transitions from student to avenging serial killer.” Despite Dexter trying to not get on the law enforcement’s radar as he finds and kills people, he starts a forensics internship at the police department.

Dempsey’s role on Dexter: Original Sin is actually not too far off from his role in Thanksgiving. In the horror flick, he played Sheriff Eric Newlon. Unfortunately, while Newlon seemed to be the good guy, he was later revealed to be the one responsible for terrorizing the town and murdering people around the Thanksgiving holiday. Since he will more than likely only be playing the good guy in Original Sin, at least for now, he definitely knows a thing or two about dealing with an unsuspecting serial killer.

Thanksgiving and Dexter: Original Sin are not the only horror projects in Patrick Dempsey’s filmography.

Scream fanatics surely remember that the Grey’s Anatomy alum played Detective Mike Kincaid in Scream 3, where he survived the wrath of Ghostface. There were rumors going around suggesting he may be appearing in the upcoming Scream 7, but as of now, that hasn’t been confirmed. With Neve Campbell's return, Dempsey definitely needs to make a comeback to the franchise.

Basically, what we've learned from Thanksgiving and Scream is that if Dempsey plays an officer in a horror project, you know can bet that it’s going to be good, regardless if he’s the good guy or bad guy.

Dempsey joins an Original Sin cast that is portraying both familiar characters from Dexter as well as completely new ones. Patrick Gibson will be playing the fledgling serial killer, taking over for Michael C. Hall, while Christian Slater will play Dexter’s dad, Harry Morgan, and Molly Brown will play his sister, Debra. Also, the cast includes James Martinez, Alex Shimizu, Christina Milian, and Reno Wilson.

It seems like Patrick Dempsey will be in good company on Dexter: Original Sin, and he'll probably be using some pointers he learned on Thanksgiving for the prequel, but maybe minus the killing. It will be exciting to see him continue his horror genre takeover, especially since it’s on a series centered on an already-known and beloved character. As of now, the series does not have a premiere date on the 2024 TV schedule, but hopefully, more details will be released soon.

Spoiler alert! This story discusses “Never Felt So Alone,” the April 11 episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

Ellen Pompeo made another appearance on Grey’s Anatomy’s 20th season in the latest episode, but rather than focusing on her Alzheimer’s research, this time things got more personal. We got a solid glimpse at just how much Meredith Grey still misses Derek Shepherd when their son Bailey had a medical emergency. Despite Meredith getting annoyed with her boyfriend Nick Marsh (again) over how he handled things, I fully believe this couple is endgame, and “Never Felt So Alone” strengthened my argument.

Meredith, who was working on her research in Seattle on the April 11 episode, got caught off-guard when her daughter Zola informed her by text that Nick (Scott Speedman) had taken Bailey to the hospital in Boston with early signs of appendicitis. She was furious that Nick had neglected to inform her of that immediately (which is valid) and was able to charter Catherine Fox’s plane to rush home.

That’s when we were first clued into the reason for Meredith’s anxiety. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) tried to allay her fears by reminding her how routine an appendectomy is, and how most of the time mistakes don’t happen, to which she retorted:

Like a punch straight to the gut, Meredith reminded us that what happened to McDreamy might have been prevented if the doctors in charge of his care had gotten a CT and realized the extent of his head injury. Derek came up again after Bailey's surgery when Meredith — who was still angry at Nick and asked him to leave — admitted to Richard when she misses her husband the most, saying:  

I think every Grey’s Anatomy fan still stings a little over Patrick Dempsey’s Derek being killed off, but it’s just heartbreaking to hear Meredith say it. It also really gives context to her harsh reaction toward Nick. However, Richard pointed out that Meredith does, in fact, have someone to talk to about the kids, and Nick’s response to the situation is why I think he’s not going anywhere.

When Meredith finally went to talk to Nick about what happened, he didn’t let her off the hook, pointing out that he’d been staying with her children for two days while she was out of town, and the reason he hadn’t called her right away was because he was on the phone with the nanny to make sure the other two kids were taken care of. While I do agree Meredith still had every right to be upset, I definitely see his side of it, and Meredith has to know that if she’s trusting Nick to care for her kids, she has to actually trust him.

Nick also said he knows he’s not McDreamy. He will never be her children’s father, but he still loves them. Little Bailey even asked for Nick first thing when he woke up from the surgery. That’s a pretty telling sign.

Nick has put up with a lot from Meredith, but he is still there, still showing up for her kids and being patient as she continues to navigate her grief and allow herself to relinquish just the tiniest bit of control.

With five episodes remaining in Grey’s Anatomy’s 20th season, I don’t know how much more Meredith we’ll get, but I’m certain that wherever she is, Nick Marsh will remain by her side. ABC’s medical drama is on a short hiatus, set to return at 9 p.m. ET Thursday, May 2. In the meantime, you can catch up on the best Grey’s Anatomy episodes, as every season can be streamed with a Hulu subscription, and the first 19 seasons are available with a Netflix subscription. 

It's an exciting time to be a horror fan, as the genre continues its renaissance. The best horror movies have been given new sequels, including Wes Craven's Scream. A seventh movie is currently in development, with Neve Campbell announcing her return as Sidney Prescott, as well as Kevin Williamson as director. I'm a hardcore Scream fan, and after Campbell's return was confirmed I need Patrick Dempsey to return ASAP. 

What we know about Scream 7 is limited, but fans were thrilled that franchise hero Sidney Prescott is back, after Neve Campbell dropped out of the last movie. And sincs she'll be fighting Ghostface again, fans are wondering about more Scream legacy characters. And I think now is the perfect time for Dempsey to finally return as Mark Kincaid. 

In the 2022 Scream (which is streaming with a Paramount+ subscription), it is revealed that Sidney married Mark after meeting during the events of Scream 3. This seemed to be planting seeds for his return, and now would be the perfect time.

And after the departure of Jenna Oretga and Melissa Barrera as Tara and Samantha Carpenter, there's also a huge gap in the cast. Dempsey would add his own starpower, especially with the still rabid Grey's Anatomy fanbase (myself included).

Patrick Dempsey also recently returned to the slasher genre in Eli Roth's Thanksgiving, which has been super popular on Netflix. So now would be a great time to keep that momentum and return to the Scream franchise as Sidney's husband.

Of course, there's been no indication that this is actually happening. But as a hardcore Scream fan who loved the previous two installments, I think it would be a great way to include another legacy character in the new trilogy. I have to think that previous director Tyler Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin dropped his name to set up a future appearance. And the team at Radio Silence will serve as executive producers on Scream 7.

The casting for the upcoming horror movie hasn't been revealed just yet, with the exception of Neve Campbell. Fans will expect a number of returning faces who survived the last movie, including Courteney Cox's Gale Weathers and Hayden Panettiere's Kirby Reed. And while Scream's Core Four has been broken up, I'm hoping to see Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding back in their third appearance as Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin. For her part, Brown said she hasn't been approached just yet by the studio. But with casting underway, perhaps that could change soon. 

Scream 7 doesn't currently have a release date, which is understandable given the early stage of its development. While we wait for more information on Neve Campbell's return to the slasher property, check out the 2024 movie release dates and plan your next movie experiences. 

Fame is a tricky thing, and sometimes the biggest stars in the world can lose it all. Personal problems, changing times, and other factors can lead to a once-promising career disappearing almost over night. These stars, however, reversed their trajectories and came out on top after enduring rough times, in this list of actors who made remarkable career comebacks. 

Robert Downey, Jr.

Robert Downey, Jr was one of the most promising young actors in Hollywood in the 1980s, starring in films like Less Than Zero, Chaplin, and Natural Born Killers. In the mid-90s his life went infamously went off the rails with substance abuse problems. When it looked like he'd thrown it all away, he cleaned up and his fame exploded as he became one of the highest-paid actors in the MCU.

Jane Fonda

Jane Fonda has had a few ups and downs in her career. After breaking out as a star in the '60s, she was later shunned by many for her notorious trip to North Vietnam during the war. She rebounded and starred in hits like 9 to 5 and On Golden Pond. In 1991, Fonda married Ted Turner and completely stepped back from acting. She didn't appear in anything at all until after their divorce in 2001, but roared back to prominence in the 21st Century. 

Rob Lowe

As a member of the "Brat Pack" in the 1980s, Rob Lowe was on top of the world. That all came crashing down when a videotape of Lowe in a compromising situation was leaked. His hard partying had caught up to him, and though he got sober in 1992, he would spend much of the decade playing smaller roles or in direct-to-video movies. In 1999 he landed the role of Sam Seaborn in The West Wing and was once again on top, where he's stayed ever since. 

John Travolta

In the late '70s, there was no bigger star than John Travolta. From Welcome Back, Kotter to Grease and Saturday Night Fever, Travolta was in some of the biggest pop culture touchstones of all time. Then the '80s came and his career hit a serious lull. While he was in the hit Look Who's Talking and its sequels, it was 1994's Pulp Fiction that vaulted Travolta back to the top. 

Natasha Lyonne

In the late '90s, Natasha Lyonne was one of a group of budding stars in American Pie and other movies like Slums Of Beverly Hills before health and addiction problems derailed her career. Thankfully for all of us she came out of those those stronger and has since starred in fantastic shows like Orange is the New Black and Russian Doll. 

Brendan Fraser

Brendan Fraser winning the Oscar for 2022 The Whale capped off one of the greatest comeback stories in Hollywood history. His work had all but completely dried up in the late '00s and 2010s, but his career has had the most incredible resurgence in the 2020s. 

Winona Ryder

Winona Ryder defined "movie star" for late Gen Xers in the '90s, but after her infamous arrest for shoplifting in 2001, her career nosedived and she didn't appear in a movie for about three years after. For the next decade or so, she worked steadily but didn't regain her star power from early in her career. That changed when she starred in Stranger Things, starting in 2016, and she once again became a huge star. 

Dave Chappelle

In 2003 Dave Chappelle debuted Chappelle's Show on Comedy Central and it became a massive hit. Despite the network throwing tens of millions of dollars at the comedian to keep the show going, he turned it down and walked away. Chappelle stayed away for most of the next decade before reviving his standup career, and while Chappelle continues to garner controversy, it's safe to say he's as big as ever. 

Betty White

When Betty White died in 2021 she was mourned by millions. The beloved actress had been a television star since the 1940s, but not all of those years were in the spotlight. After early success in the '50s in Life with Elizabeth and other sitcoms, White's career hit a lull for more than a decade. She returned to the big time with her role on The Mary Tyler Moore Show in the '70s, The Golden Girls in the '80s, and then later with Hot in Cleveland in the 2010s.

Ke Huy Quan

There is no more heartwarming story than that of Ke Huy Quan's resurgence. the actor, who first found fame as a child in The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, completely disappeared from Hollywood. For twenty years, he appeared in not one TV show or movie, before returning in 2021 with a role in Finding ʻOhana, and then winning an Oscar for his performance in 2022's Everything Everywhere All At Once. 

Michael Keaton

Michael Keaton was a controversial choice when he was cast as Batman in Tim Burton's Batman in 1989, but it shows just how famous he was at that time. After Batman Returns, Keaton's star faded and he starred in a run of films to mixed reviews. In 2014 Keaton starred in the very meta Birdman, as a former superhero star looking to regain his fame. It worked, at least for Keaton. 

Katharine Hepburn

Anyone with a career as long as Katharine Hepburn's is bound to have some slow periods. The most amazing fact of the legendary actress' career was the 34-year span between Best Actress Oscars. She won in 1934 for Morning Glory and then again in 1968 and 1969 for Guess Who's Coming to Dinner and The Lion in Winter, respectively. She would win her fourth 13 years later in 1982 for On Golden Pond. 

Mickey Rourke

In the 1980s Mickey Rourke starred in a string of hits. Eventually, though, his reputation as being difficult to work with overshadowed his performances and he was left in the Hollywood wilderness until triumphantly returning to his past glory in 2008 with The Wrestler.

Sidney Poitier

Sidney Poitier was one of the biggest stars of the '50s, '60s, and '70s. Then came the '80s, when he stepped away from acting and concentrated on directing, to mixed reviews. In 1988 he turned back to acting and had a wonderful late career resurgence with films like Shoot To Kill and Sneakers. 

Jason Bateman

In the 1980s it looked like Jason Bateman was a surefire bet to be a huge star. Then the '90s came and his career pretty much dried up. He had some guest spots on TV shows, but little else. He was all but forgotten. In 2003, Fox debut a show you may have heard of, Arrested Development, with Bateman as the star, and he's been huge ever since. 

Keanu Reeves

It's hard to remember a time when Keanu Reeves wasn't one of the biggest stars in the world, but after his success in the '90s and early '00s with The Matrix and Speed and more, he starred in a slew of commercial and critical failures. Thankfully for Reeves fans everywhere, John Wick came along and Reeves was back on top of the mountain, where he still is. 

Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore almost became a Hollywood child star casualty after her string of hits as a kid in the 1980s. She had a rough childhood that led to substance abuse problems as a teenager. Against the odds, she got through it all and became an even bigger star on the other end. 

Neil Patrick Harris

Neil Patrick Harris first got famous as a child prodigy playing a prodigy on Doogie Howser, MD. After the sitcom ended in 1993, he struggled to regain that popularity. That is, until he played a fictionalized version of himself in Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle in 2004. Soon after he landed the role he's best known for, Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother. 

Matthew McConaughey

Most of Matthew McConaughey's early career was made up of starring roles in rom-coms. In 2009 the Lincoln Lawyer star took a two-year acting hiatus to re-evaluate his career. He emerged in 2011 by taking on more serious roles and leaving his rom-com leading man reputation behind. Since the so-called "McConaissance," McConaughey's become on of the most acclaimed actors of the 21st century. 

Nicolas Cage

By 2009 Cage was one of the biggest action stars in Hollywood, and one of the highest-paid actors in the business, but it seems he couldn't curb his spending and ended up in debt to the IRS and other creditors. As a result, Cage seemingly took every job offered to him, and he put out an immense catalog of straight-to-video movies that few people have ever watched. Finally, in 2022, Cage revealed he was finally debt-free and started being more selective with his roles. this led to acclaimed roles in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and 2023's Dream Scenario.

Mandy Moore

Mandy Moore's career started like a comet as a singer in the late '90s which she parlayed into an acting career. That career slowed way down in the early 2010s, only to be revived in a massive way with her starring role on the NBC hit This Is Us. 

Christian Slater

With starring roles in Heathers, Pump Up The Volume, and Gleaming The Cube, Christian Slater became a Gen X icon. He scored a number of high-profile roles in big-budget movies in the '90s, before work started drying up in the early 2000s. He returned to Hollywood prominence with his award-winning role in Mr. Robot and has maintained it ever since. 

Luke Perry

Luke Perry was one of the biggest television stars of the 1990s as part of the cast of Beverly Hills, 90210. After the show ended though, his star faded some. That is, until he was cast in the CW's Riverdale and he was discovered by a whole new generation of fans. Tragically, Perry died in 2019 at age 52. 

Christina Ricci

Childhood success for Christina Ricci didn't immediately translate to success as an adult. She's always worked steadily, but her fame never quite reached the heights of her early career in The Addams Family. That changed in 2021 with Showtime's Yellowjackets. 

Michelle Yeoh

Michelle Yeoh first found international fame with her roles in the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies and Crouch Tiger, Hidden Dragon. She maintained a level of success, but she exploded to new heights with her Oscar-winning turn in 2022's Everything, Everywhere, All At Once. 

Neve Campbell

Neve Campbell was huge in the '90s with her starring role in the show Party Of Five and movies like The Craft and Wild Things. In the early 2000s, she starred in the Scream franchise, but hit a lull after that. Recently, she's been back on top with roles in The Lincoln Lawyer and Twisted Metal. 

Channing Tatum

Fans might not think that Channing Tatum has never had a career lull, but he has actually had a couple. He's always had to fight the idea that he's all looks and little substance (which is far from accurate), and that has affected his career at different points. He's always rebounded with strong performances like the one in Foxcatcher, however. 

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence's career hasn't really had a financial downturn, her lull was completely her choice. After a couple of poorly reviewed films and becoming the most famous victim of the iPhone hacking scandal, Lawrence stepped away from acting for two years in 2019. She triumphantly returned in the great movie Don't Look Up in 2021. 

Patrick Dempsey

Patrick Dempsey was first famous for starring in teen comedies like Loverboy and Can't Buy Me Love. He bounced around for a few years after that, working steadily but hardly a star. That changed in a big way when he landed the role of Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd in 2005 on Grey's Anatomy. 

Marlon Brando

The 1960s weren't kind to Marlon Brando. After establishing himself as a bonafide star and one of the finest actors of the 20th century in the '50s, his mercurial nature earned him a reputation as difficult to work with. A string of box office failures didn't help. Famously, he pushed hard to get the role of Vito Corleone in The Godfather, and wow, was that the right move! He won an Academy Award and reminded everyone how great an actor he was. 

David Carradine

Leave it to Quentin Tarantino to help revive a star's career like he did with John Travolta. David Carradine was huge in the 1970s as the star of Kung Fu, and while he always found work, it took until Kill Bill in 2003 that he found that same level of fame again. 

Kiefer Sutherland

After becoming one of the biggest teen idols of the '80s, Kiefer Sutherland spent most of the '90s in smaller, supporting roles. In 2001, however, he landed the role of Jack Bauer in 24 and it became the part he's most known for, becoming a television icon over the run of the show. 

Fame, as they say, is fleeting, and these actors prove there can always be a second act in Hollywood. 

As Grey’s Anatomy prepares for its 20th Season, which will premiere on the 2024 TV schedule, Patrick Dempsey is reflecting on his eleven seasons on the show and how it influenced his career. The actor played the beloved Derek Shepherd for over a decade, and he returned once as McDreamy. Now, as he celebrates a successful year that included a pair of projects on the 2023 movie schedule and the title Sexiest Man Alive, the actor looking back at his time on the ABC drama and how it impacted his fans and career. 

This year, Patrick Dempsey starred in the Eli Roth horror flick Thanksgiving and Michael Mann’s biopic Ferrari. On top of that, the McDreamy actor was finally named Sexiest Man Alive after 20 years of waiting. There’s no denying that Grey’s Anatomy helped the actor get to where he is today, and he explained how grateful he is for it while on GMA:

Back in 2015, when Dempsey left the show, he told EW that this role was “life-changing.” Even though he’d been consistently working for 20 years before Grey’s, there’s no question that this role impacted his career in a profound way. McDreamy was, and still is, a phenomenon, and the love story of Meredith and Derek will be forever iconic. 

While Patrick Dempsey left the show eight years ago, he looks back on it lovingly. At the time of McDreamy’s exit, he said “it had been long enough,” and he was ready to “move on with other things and other interests.” However, his love for the show and fans' love for him remained, and in 2020 he surprised them by returning as Derek in Meredith’s coma dreams, saying that the experience was “really enjoyable.” 

Overall, it’s really sweet to hear about Patrick Dempsey’s appreciation for Grey’s Anatomy. While Dr. Shepherd hasn’t been on the show regularly for a really long time, we still feel his impact through characters like his sister Amelia, nephew Lucas and of course, Meredith (up until Ellen Pompeo’s exit as a regular last season).  

So, now that we know how highly the actor thinks about his time on Grey’s, one has to wonder: Will Patrick Dempsey return to the medical procedural? While Derek is dead, they’ve found ways to bring him back before, and the actor did say we should “never say never” with a show like this. Even though I doubt we’ll see McDreamy again, it’s nice to know that the door is not totally closed, and the actor still has a lot of love for the show that helped turn him into a star (and heartthrob).

It’s been a wild few days for fans of the Scream franchise. Wes Craven’s original movie is considered one of the best horror movies of all time, and two recent sequels have been released in quick succession. And while Scream 7 is on the way with a new director, that upcoming horror movie has hit some speed bumps this week, losing star Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. Now the new Scream might be bringing back two legacy characters, and I’m honestly so sold.

The internet exploded when it was revealed that Melissa Barrera was being dropped from Scream 7 due to comments she made about the ongoing Hamas-Israel War. The franchise's future was made all the more precarious when Jenna Ortega also dropped out, reportedly due to scheduling conflicts. But a new report by Variety will thrill longtime fans, as the studio is allegedly toying with bringing back both Neve Campbell and Patrick Dempsey. 

Do you hear that sound? It’s Scream fans everywhere cheering. It was definitely an adjustment watching the last movie without franchise hero Sidney Prescott, after Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute. So if the scream queen actually negotiates a new deal, moviegoers would be thrilled with having her back in the franchise. 

This report by Variety did clarify that Campbell and Dempsey haven’t actually entered negotiations for their Scream return yet. Still, it’s a super exciting concept that is sure to increase excitement over the forthcoming slasher. Fingers crossed that they can make a deal, and have Sidney and her husband Mark appear in a major capacity in Scream 7.

While Neve Campbell has starred in all but one Scream movie, Patrick Dempsey has only had one appearance: his debut in Wes Craven’s Scream 3. He played Detective Mark Kincaid, and managed to survive his encounter with Ghostface in the threequel. It was revealed in 2022’s Scream that he and Sidney eventually got married, and even have children. I’ve been personally hoping to see Dempsey return to Scream for years, so if this pans out I’m going to be a very happy fan. 

Only time will tell whether this duo actually appears in Scream 7, but it’s certainly an exciting thought. There are countless questions about how the sequel will continue development after the recent casting shakeup, especially after the Core Four became such big characters in the last two movies. Now it seems like that quartet has become a duo, with only Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding seemingly available to play their signature characters.

It’s unclear when Scream 7 will hit theaters, but the last three movies are streaming now with a Paramount+ subscription. In the meantime, check out the 2024 movie release dates to plan your next movie experience. 

This Eli Roth project has been over a decade in the making. The premise behind the upcoming slasher film Thanksgiving was first introduced as a fake trailer in the 2007 film Grindhouse, and is actually the third from the Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino movie to be adapted into a feature-length film (following Machete and Hobo with a Shotgun). Critics have seen the upcoming horror movie, which stars TikTok star Addison Rae alongside Grey’s Anatomy alum Patrick Dempsey, and they are all talking about the gore factor.

The gruesome first trailer for Thanksgiving shows the residents of Plymouth, Massachusetts, being terrorized by a serial killer called John Carver a year after a Black Friday riot that ended in several deaths. With this slasher sharing the same head of makeup and effects as The Boys’ bloody spinoff Gen V in Colin Penman, I’d say things are likely to get pretty sloppy this holiday. But let’s see what the critics are saying. In CinemaBlend’s review of Thanksgiving, Mike Reyes rates the film 4 out of 5 stars, saying this was a movie worth waiting for, with its carnage being balanced by some seriously funny moments. He continues:   

James Mottram of GamesRadar also gives Thanksgiving 4 stars out of 5, noting that Eli Roth hasn’t had this much fun in years, blending over-the-top gore with satire on consumerism for a sick and twisted final product. Mottram writes: 

Charlie Ridgely of ComicBook.com says Eli Roth’s trademark gore is put to good use, creating a modern and thoroughly entertaining movie with plenty of Grindhouse spirit. Ridgely rates Thanksgiving 4 out of 5, and says: 

Emma Kiely of Collider grades the holiday horror a B+, calling it a “gory blast” despite a pretty basic script and predictable twist. It delivers on its promise of creative kills, and if recent slashers have been too mild for you, Thanksgiving should satisfy that hunger. Kiely writes:  

Frank Scheck of THR says Eli Roth comes through with just enough “cheap kills” for his bloodthirsty audiences. The deaths are quite imaginative, Scheck writes, including a knifed cheerleader and the impaling of a parade driver. The critic continues:  

It sounds like those who are familiar with Eli Roth’s work are going to get what they came for in the gore department, when Thanksgiving hits the big screen. After waiting over a decade for this concept to be developed, the time has almost come, and fans can start their holiday feasting at the theater on Friday, November 17. For the bulk of his career, going back to that oh-so-memorable breakout role in the ‘80s teen rom-com Can’t Buy Me Love, Patrick Dempsey has been making fans swoon with his good looks and abundant smoothness. And yet despite the fact that he spawned the TV nickname McDreamy for his many years co-leading Grey’s Anatomy alongside Ellen Pompeo, the actor somehow hadn’t reached the pinnacle of branded attractiveness, People’s Sexiest Man Alive. Until NOW, that is. And I am loving the way his family reacted to the long-awaited achievement. 

Dempsey is able to boast about being one of Hollywood’s hottest hunks just as he’s boosting his horror cred with the release of Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving — check out the gory first trailer! — and I’m wondering which is more frightening for the actor to think about: that movie’s holiday killer, or his kids being able to troll him on a daily basis over his new status. Speaking with People to mark the occasion, the Ferrari co-star amusingly shared his thoughts on how his daughter and two sons will treat him now that he’s the Sexiest Man Alive, saying:

Amusingly enough, his 21-year-old daughter Talula Dempsey was quick to chime in with a hot take, as it were, on People’s Instagram post. At least she bucked her father’s expectations about the kind of joke she’d make, as her comment was more about riding in the tailwind of his latest honor, as seen below: 

Wife Jillian Dempsey knows a thing or two about beauty herself, as a makeup artist with her own line of clean beauty products, and she was oh so happy for him to take on his lauded position, even though he already attained that honor in her eyes years ago. She took to Instagram with a slightly more sincere message than the one their daughter left:

Patrick and Jillian Dempsey have been happily together for the majority of their 24 year marriage, going back to July 1999, although a pretty significant hiccup occurred in early 2015 when the latter filed for divorce. Thankfully, the couple found a way to make it work anew, and the divorce was called off almost two years later. 

You know who else had a little something to add to all the gushing happening over Patrick Dempsey’s hawtness? None other than Eli Roth, who traded in words for ominous imagery: 

Perfect.  Now here’s hoping Thanksgiving is successful enough to bump Dempsey back up the horror charts enough that the new creative team behind the upcoming Scream VII makes the move to bring back the character he played in Scream 3, Mark Kincaid. And then he can land that other prestigious honor, Sexiest Mark Alive.

Spring 2007 saw a movie event of rare style dropping into theaters through the double feature extravaganza known as Grindhouse. Alongside two main attractions from Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino came a handful of fake trailers that promised movies like Machete, Don’t, and Thanksgiving. With co-writer/director Eli Roth promising that last title in the line as a full feature for over a decade, the wait is finally over as this pipe dream is now an upcoming movie that horror fans can actually look forward to. 

Pitting the ever McDreamy Patrick Dempsey against this long awaited stalker, there's some fresh meat included with some leftover concepts from the original pitch. That much was seen as Sony recently unveiled this bountiful feast for the eyes, and it’s definitely a lot cleaner than the original Grindhouse variant promised. But don’t be fooled, as it still looks quite brutal and bloody, with scenes like the infamous trampoline kill still being present. 

What we know about Thanksgiving is that it’s a slasher flick set during the titular November holiday. That’s a simple enough pitch, and considering it’s themed after one of the lesser-celebrated holidays among big screen fare, it’s a novel enough idea. Roth started working on the idea around 2010, but as anyone invested in this saga will tell you, the road to becoming an actual movie was not so smooth. 

There has clearly been a bit of an evolution between the original “fake” trailer for Thanksgiving, and the ultra-crisp and modern version we see here. With the Grindhouse variant, Roth went for more of a sleazy old-school slasher vibe that felt more comfortable in the ‘70s. Using the grimy and beaten down celluloid aesthetic of film it was attached to, Michael Biehn played the role of the town sheriff, looking quite tough as nails in the process.

To get a better look at what I’m talking about, take a look at the original 2007 version of Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving. Though please note, it’s very NSFW, and you should take caution with where and how you watch:

Obviously, updating Thanksgiving means that a more modern audience can partake. That’s probably the same impetus that saw TikTok star Addison Rae cast in what looked like a fun set to shoot on. Rae’s photos of karaoke and other antics are certainly a sharp contrast from what we’ve seen above; though now I want to know if the actor behind the killer’s mask got in on that singing action. 

Kicking over to the more serious side of things, that’s also a huge difference in what we’ve got to look forward to in this harvest of horror. Thanksgiving is no longer a winking and nodding sendup of the holiday killer genre; it’s now playing as a legitimate upcoming horror movie. Which kind of explains the awesome casting Suits and Hostel vet Rick Hoffman as a loving dad, monologuing the true reasons for the season, as we see images of frightful murder appear on screen.

Though Thanksgiving is taking itself more seriously, Eli Roth's passion project still has that wild spark running underneath its more polished form. Comparing the vibes of the finished film and its more retro flavored origins is going to be all the more interesting to behold once this mysterious pilgrim finally carves up its unfortunate victims in theaters. You can take your place at the table starting November 17th, but make sure to leave room for dessert; which will probably be a jump scare sequel tease, to be honest.

Grey’s Anatomy has been beloved by TV fans for the better part of two decades, and when you think back to the MAGIC days of Meredith, Alex, George, Izzie and Cristina, it’s hard to believe how many traumas, romances, medical miracles and natural disasters we’ve witnessed. It’s tempting to want to go back and rewatch all of Grey’s Anatomy’s heart-pumping drama — especially with all 19 seasons readily available to stream with a Netflix subscription — but with 420 episodes so far, that’s a pretty massive undertaking. We’re here to help by giving you the best starting points from all of the best eras of the Shonda Rhimes drama.

Now, if those early days of Meredith and McDreamy, 007, and Cristina’s bad-assery are what you’re craving, by all means, hit play on Season 1’s “A Hard Day’s Night” and ride that wave through nearly two decades of episodes. However, if you’re more interested in a specific period of time — or a specific character — allow me to suggest these other episodes as good places to jump in. (I tried to keep the SPOILERS to a minimum, but reader beware if you’re new to the series.) 

The Denny Duquette Era (Season 2, Episode 13)  

We’re 19 seasons into this medical drama, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s appearance in Season 2 quite possibly still stands as the best guest-starring role the show has ever seen. Morgan played Denny Duquette, a heart patient with charisma to spare, who had an immediate and undeniable mutual attraction with Katherine Heigl’s Izzie Stevens. If you want to relive the rollercoaster of their complicated relationship, start with “Begin the Begin” in the second season. 

Meredith And Derek Get Together For Good (Season 5, Episode 19)  

Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey and Patrick Dempsey’s Derek Shepherd kicked off the series with a bang — literally — engaging in a one-night stand just hours before he was revealed to be an attending surgeon at her new job. However, it was quite a while before this on-off couple was finally fully "on." The way Derek treated Meredith in some of those earlier episodes was far from McDreamy, so if you want to skip the "Oh yeah, I'm still married," of it all and get straight to prime MerDer territory, fire the series up at Season 5’s “Elevator Love Letter.” 

The Mercy West Era (Season 6, Episode 5) 

The first time Grey’s Anatomy added a new batch of doctors came in Season 6, when Seattle Grace merged with Mercy West Medical Center amid a tough economic climate. Season 6’s “Invasion” introduced fans to Jackson Avery, April Kepner, Reed Adamson, Charles Percy, and while I won’t spoil the fates of Nora Zehetner and Robert Baker’s characters (IYKYK), fans of a certain would-be couple undoubtedly would want to start watching here, or skip a couple of seasons forward to … 

Japril: The Beginning (Season 8, Episode 21)  

When they were introduced in Season 6, nobody knew that Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April (Sarah Drew) would go on to become one of the most adored couples in Grey’s Anatomy history. The ups and downs of their relationship — from the most romantic wedding interruption ever to the devastating death of their baby (which actually sent Drew into early labor) — have fans so invested, we’re still begging for more. Relive the show's best love story by starting with the night of Jackson and April’s first hot hookup — Season 8’s “Moment of Truth.” 

Welcome New Interns: Meet Jo Wilson And Her Rookie Class (Season 9, Episode 1) 

Every few seasons the drama rains down a new class of characters, with a few often sticking around for the long term. Season 9 saw the hospital’s veterans still reeling from the fallout of the plane crash, but amidst the chaos, the premiere introduced new doctors Jo Wilson, Stephanie Edwards, Shane Ross, Leah Murphy and Heather Brooks. If you want to relive the origin story of Camilla Luddington’s character, or refresh yourself on what exactly came to be of the rest of these interns, start with “Going, Going, Gone” in the ninth season. 

Maggie And Amelia Replace Cristina (And Lexie) As Meredith’s Twisted Sisters (Season 10, Episode 23) 

Meredith finding support in her sisters — biological or otherwise — was huge for the character, so I don’t think it was any coincidence that Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) made her entrance as the love child of Meredith’s mother and Richard Webber, just one episode before Sandra Oh’s final appearance as Meredith’s “person,” Cristina Yang. Meredith also lost her sister, Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh), in Season 8, but with Caterina Scorsone becoming a series regular as Amelia Shepherd in Season 11, Meredith was back to having two sisters. Jump in at Season 10’s “Everything I Try to Do, Nothing Seems to Turn Out Right” to watch the new twisted sisters’ relationship start to grow. 

The B-Team Era: Meet Levi ‘Glasses’ Schmitt And Friends (Season 14, Episode 4)  

Another group of interns was introduced in Season 14, including Jake Borelli’s Levi Schmitt (known back then as “Glasses”) and Jaicy Elliot’s Taryn Helm. The six new characters also starred in a six-episode web spinoff called Grey’s Anatomy: B-Team, which featured cameos from the drama’s main cast. Relive this era starting with Season 14’s “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head.” 

If you’re a big Jake Borelli fan, though, go ahead and start watching at the Season 14 premiere. “Glasses” was initially supposed to be a small guest role, but they chose to keep him around as part of the incoming class. Good decision, since he remains a fan favorite today! 

The Crossover Era: Station 19 Premieres (Season 14, Episode 13)  

Later in Season 14, the Seattle universe expanded when Ben Warren (Jason George) changed careers, thus introducing fans to the firefighters of Station 19. Season 14’s “You Really Got a Hold on Me” served as a backdoor pilot for the spinoff, introducing Jaina Lee Ortiz as Andy Herrera. To this day, the cast members often show up on each other’s shows, particularly when there’s romance (or tragedy, of course) involved.  

The Reboot Era: Meredith Prepares To Leave As We Meet McDreamy’s Nephew (Season 19, Episode 1) 

As we’ve seen, it’s not uncommon for Grey’s to drop a handful of interns into the hospital every so often, but Season 19 was the first time since the MAGIC days that five new characters became the focus. Ellen Pompeo’s impending exit as a series regular necessitated a reboot of sorts, and we quickly found ourselves getting swept up in the will they/won’t they of McDreamy’s nephew, Lucas Adams (Niko Terho), and Simone Griffith (Alexis Floyd), as well as the stories of Mika Yasuda (Midori Francis), Benson “Blue” Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.) and Jules Millin (Adelaide Kane). 

If you need a refresher on this newest era of our beloved show, pop on Season 19’s “Everything Has Changed.”

Nobody knows how many more eras Grey’s Anatomy will have before it closes the book, but the show has definitely proven capable of adapting its stories and characters to keep fans invested. Hopefully this list sets you on the right path for your rewatching adventure. Be sure to keep your eye on the 2023 TV schedule to see when this and all of your other favorite shows will premiere. 

Ellen Pompeo was part of several iconic moments on Grey’s Anatomy, delivering a number of quotable lines in her 19 seasons as the show’s lead. One of the series' most classic moments came back in Season 2, when her character Meredith Grey begged Patrick Dempsey’s Derek Shepherd to, “Pick me. Choose me. Love me,” rather than give his marriage to Addison another shot. Pompeo was famously “horrified” by that scene, and while I completely understand her reasoning, it’s still kind of a bummer.

Grey’s Anatomy veterans Ellen Pompeo and Katherine Heigl reunited for an Actors on Actors interview with Variety, and the Izzie Stevens actress brought up how fans still quote dialogue from the show to them. For Pompeo, she gets that McDreamy scene from one of Grey’s Anatomy’s best episodes, “Bring the Pain,” and she recalled being so embarrassed by Meredith’s display, saying: 

When that episode aired back in 2005, viewers saw it as the writers likely intended it to be: Meredith at her most vulnerable, putting all of her feelings out there for Derek and telling him that he was exactly what she wanted. However, knowing how strongly Ellen Pompeo opposed that scene, it honestly takes a lot of the appeal away from it for me. Now I can’t help but see it through the actress’ eyes, and I just don’t want to see Meredith’s big moment as a huge show of insecurity.

Is it possible that’s how the next generation of Grey’s fans will also see that scene? Ellen Pompeo said her daughter apparently references that quote in a way that paints Meredith in a less-than-flattering light. The actress said: 

That quote also played a big part in Ellen Pompeo’s final episode as a series regular, in which she refused to beg Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman) to follow her to Boston.

Ellen Pompeo really isn’t wrong. Meredith had no business begging for Derek’s love back in Season 2. We tend to forget that Derek was … not great to Meredith in the earlier seasons of the show, and it’s just such a bad look for any woman to beg a man to leave his wife for you — even if Addison did cheat on McDreamy with McSteamy.

It’s somewhat disappointing that one of Grey’s Anatomy’s most iconic scenes was so strongly disliked by the actor delivering the famous lines, but that doesn’t mean anyone has to stop enjoying the monologue. The first 18 seasons of the medical drama can be streamed with a Netflix subscription, with Season 19 being added on June 17. The horror genre has been in a renaissance for years now, and 2023 definitely started off with a bang thanks to releases like M3GAN and Scream VI. The latter movie arrived over the weekend, and has already broken records for the beloved franchise. Just like its 2022 predecessor, the new Scream was helmed by directing duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett who are also superfans of the property. The last two movies have brought back legacy characters like Judy Hicks and Kirby Reed respectively, and there are 5 Scream survivors that I think need to be brought back in a future sequel. 

In every Scream movie there are a few characters that manage to make it out of their encounter with Ghostface still alive. When I spoke with directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett ahead of Scream VI's release, they teased that the identity of another potential returning character was revealed via an easter egg. I've seen the movie twice and can't quite crack the code, but there seems like a few obvious choices to return if Paramount greenlights another sequel. Let's break it all down.

Patrick Dempsey as Mark Kincaid (Scream 3)

This is one Scream return that felt like it was inevitable for a time. Grey's Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey famously starred as Mark Kincaid in Scream 3, and survived the attacks by Ghostface Roman Bridger. While he hasn't been seen in the slasher franchise since, he's felt just out of the frame thanks to a few key references.

Because when Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott appeared in the 2022 Scream, it became clear that she and Mark actually ended up marrying and having a family together. His name was dropped, although Patrick Dempsey never actually appeared. But with the franchise continuing to lean into legacy characters, could this change in a future appearance? Of course, the return of Kincaid would presumably be tied to Sidney, so Neve Campbell might have to negotiate a new deal in order to see this pair back on the big screen. But with Patrick Dempsey recently getting into the sequel game with his role in Disenchanted, it doesn't seem totally out of the question that he might take another Scream gig.

Rebecca Gayheart and Portia de Rossi as Sister Lois and Sister Murphy (Scream 2)

This one is a two-fer. 1997's Scream 2 followed as Sidney went away to college, only for Ghostface to return for another massacre. Wes Craven's first sequel was jam packed with red herrings, with some of these characters never actually coming into contact with the masked killer throughout its 120-minute runtime. And that was certainly the case with Sister Lois and Sister Murphy, played by Rebecca Gayheart and Portia de Rossi respectively. 

These two characters were largely kept out of the main action of Scream 2; they were at various parties and in the cast of Sidney's play, but didn't actually get bloody like most of their co-stars. So hardcore fans would no doubt be psyched to see either or both of them return in a future Scream movie.

If we're judging by the easter eggs in Scream VI, the return of Lois and/or Murphy does feel possible. Namely because Jenna Ortega's Tara mentions she was thinking of pledging Omega Beta Zega at college, which is one of the sororities in Scream 2. Could Tara end up going Delta Lambda Zeta instead, and meet Lois or Murphy at an alumni event? Only time will tell. 

Heather Matarazzo as Martha Meeks (Scream 3, Scream 2022)

This Scream legacy character is perhaps the most likely to return out of everyone on this list. Namely because Heather Matarazzo recently reprised her role as Martha Meeks in the 2022 movie. And as such, she's worked with the folks at Radio Silence and would easily be able to slip back into her character.

Martha is the mother of Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin, and the sister of Jamie Kennedy's Randy. She originally appeared in Scream 3, in a small role. And since the twins make up half of the Core Four, it seems more than logical that she could return in a future sequel. Maybe we'll find out who Mindy and Chad's father is in the process.

Actress Heather Matarazzo has had a long career full of iconic roles, so I'm hoping to see Martha get her vey own Ghostface scene sometime in the future. Matarazzo can lean into her horror roots from Hostel: Part II, and finally get to have the spotlight in a Scream scene. I'd like to see her even be an opening kill, perhaps giving Chad and Mindy a reason to return to Woodsboro.

Duane Martin as Joel Jones (Scream 2)

Wes Craven's 1996 original Scream movie introduced the official rules to follow in order to survive a scary movie, iconically introduced by Jamie Kennedy's Randy Meeks. Aside from not having sex or doing drugs, there's a way to guarantee survival that almost no one actually uses: getting TF out of dodge. While Sam and Tara tried to escape Woodsboro in the 2022 sequel, only one character has actually been able to leave early on in a Scream movie. And that honor goes to Scream 2's Joel played by actor Duane Martin.

Duane Martin is prominently featured in the posts and marketing for Scream 2, but ended up having a fairly small role. Originally hired as a last minute cameraman for Gale Weathers, his character Joel eventually reads about the Woodsboro murders when Ghostface starts taking victims at Windsor College. And once he finds out what happened to her last camera man, he smartly flees and is never seen again.

Joel's possible return could have been hinted at in Scream VI through the noticeable use of a camera as a weapon. When Ghostface strikes at the NYC shrine to the previous killers, Mason Gooding's Chad ends up using a camera to attack the killer. The camera itself is presumably from Kenny from the original Scream, but it could be Joel's too. Regardless, this feel like a potential thread to pull from when figuring out what the directors are planning next.

Bonus Round: Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott

Of course, the legacy character that fans are most eager to see return to Scream is its protagonist Sidney Prescott, played to perfection by Neve Campbell in the first five movies. Unfortunately she dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, making that movie the first without Sidney. 

While the Core Four are excellent actors who expertly carried the emotional story of Scream VI, I still would love to see Neve Campbell negotiate a new deal and return for any future sequels. Scream actors new and old have all put their support behind Campbell, so it doesn't seem like there's any hard feelings. Let's hope she actually gets to come back for a future faceoff against Ghostface.

Spoiler alert! This story contains spoilers for Grey’s Anatomy’s Season 19 midseason premiere, “I’ll Follow the Sun,” which aired February 23. Proceed with caution if you’re not caught up!

Meredith said goodbye to Seattle on Grey’s Anatomy’s Season 19 midseason premiere, moving her family to Boston in order for her daughter Zola to attend a gifted school. “I’ll Follow the Sun” wasn’t full of flashbacks from Ellen Pompeo’s biggest moments from her 18 years as Meredith Grey, and the emotional speeches were minimal. But it wouldn’t have done the character justice without a hint at her past, and this episode beautifully wove in Cristina Yang and Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd in subtle ways that proved our hero is going to be just fine.

With Ellen Pompeo leaving as a series regular, one big question going into the rest of Season 19 was whether or not Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman) would follow her to Boston. It’s only fitting that Meredith’s final episode would have echoes of the last time we saw her twisted sister Cristina (Sandra Oh). In the Season 10 finale, “Fear (Of the Unknown),” Derek (Patrick Dempsey) was trying to convince Meredith that they should move to Washington, D.C., and before Cristina left for Zurich, she told Meredith:  

The title of the Season 19 midseason premiere, “I’ll Follow the Sun,” seemed to reference that sentiment, and possibly indicate that Nick would move yet again to be with Meredith. The couple’s relationship had been rocky since the end of Season 18, though, and with so much of Meredith’s focus (rightfully) on her daughter, the two had trouble staying on the same page in the first handful of episodes this season.

They continued to fight on Meredith’s last day about what both of them wanted, and emotions ran high following the death of author Tessa Hobbes (Patricia Richardson) on the operating table. Meredith showed just how strong her character has become over the years, when she told Nick: 

How far we’ve come from “Pick me. Choose me. Love me.” Those were Meredith’s words to McDreamy in Season 2’s “Bring the Pain,” and although that has become one of Grey’s Anatomy’s most famous lines, Ellen Pompeo has said she was “horrified” when she read the script that her character would beg a man to love her. And on this night, she didn’t. 

In the end, Meredith set off for Boston not beholden to a man. Nick made an effort at a dramatic airport scene, but his “I love you” phone call was too little too late, and she pretended she couldn’t hear him before hanging up.

Meredith’s episode-ending narration drove home that the character is going to be just fine, as she reads from Tessa Hobbes’ final book, saying that she’s saved lives and had her life saved. She’s survived “broken bones and a broken home and the death of people I love.” And there’s no such thing as happily ever after, unless that simply means we’re still alive. Her final words on “I’ll Follow the Sun”:  

Meredith. Is. The. Sun.

Patrick Dempsey may still be best known as McDreamy, a.k.a. Dr. Derek Shepherd, as the original leading man on Grey's Anatomy. There’s a reason he got that nickname, and it has stuck with him since leaving the series. Now, though, he may not be McDreamy anymore as we knew him, as Demspsey just got a buzzcut.

Jillian Dempsey, Patrick Dempsey’s wife who is also a makeup artist, took to Instagram recently to share a video of her hubby getting his hair buzzed so he can start fresh, and that includes getting rid of the dye from a previous character role:

The Disenchanted star is looking quite fresh with his new look! While he may not look like the McDreamy of Grey's Anatomy fame anymore, he is still looking as dreamy as ever. Unfortunately, the video is in black and white, so it’s hard to tell what his hair looks like without the dye, but now that can be up to anyone’s imagination until new photos of him come out.

Jillian Dempsey didn’t specify which character role she was referring to, but we can always speculate. Patrick Dempsey showed up to the D23 Expo sporting white hair and said it was for the upcoming movie Ferrari, but then he was back to black hair for the Disenchanted premiere. As of now, Ferrari is his only upcoming project, but perhaps he filmed something special to go along with Disenchanted, having reprised his role as Robert Philip in the Disney+ film.

Though could he have made a special cameo on Grey’s Anatomy? With Ellen Pompeo officially leaving the long-running medical drama after its winter premiere in the 2023 TV schedule, the timing couldn't be better for another glimpse of Derek in the afterlife or flashback to before he died as part of her exit. He made a surprise return in Season 17, where he recurred in multiple episodes as Meredith lay in a coma due to COVID-19. Grey's fans can always dream of one of more glimpse of McDreamy before Ellen Pompeo bows out!

Since we can't say exactly what role the dyed hair was from, hopefully it won’t be too long until we find out. He may have a buzzcut now, but at least there are plenty of projects the Disenchanted star has been in where he has those beautiful McDreamy locks. Plus, a buzz looks pretty good on him. And I’m sure whatever color his hair is, he will still look dreamy.

A premiere date for Ferrari has yet to be released, but keep a lookout on CinemaBlend’s 2023 movies schedule to see what other films are coming out in the new year. It's been over 15 years since Enchanted charmed audiences and left them begging for more. It took years, but the Enchanted sequel, Disenchanted finally hit Disney+. I loved the original film and have been anxiously waiting for this sequel.

I enjoyed the original because it acted as a tribute to Disney animated films and also poked fun at them. Amy Adams gave a delightful performance as Giselle, and Patrick Dempsey and she have charming on-screen chemistry. You root for their happy ending. Enchanted gave Disenchanted an excellent blueprint to follow.

Disenchanted premiered just in time for the holiday season. It’s a light family film with plenty of musical numbers, talking animals, and wicked villains.   While revisiting Giselle and the gang, I had plenty of thoughts about this Disney+ original movie.

Disenchanted Makes Me Want More Disney Movies With Multiple Villains 

“Badder” is My favorite song and moment from Disenchanted. It reminded me how much fun a film can be when two villains go at it for supremacy. More movies should show villain-offs. Maya Rudolph and Amy Adams were at their most wicked (and entertaining) during this musical number. 

The brief mentions of some other iconic Disney villains make me want to see even more villain solo movies. We need more villain solo movies, and also more movies where the villains battle each other or even team up to take down a hero.  I know the Descendants franchise exists, but I want to see Ursula teaming up with the Evil Queen or Maleficent and Jafar working together. 

It’s time for Disney to let villains become the focus even more. 

Nancy And Edward Need Their Own Spin-Off Movie 

After rewatching Enchanted,  I was reminded how great James Marsden is in the original film. He really is the perfect Prince Edward. Only an actor like James Marsden can play an incredibly goofy, slightly dimwitted character and make him somehow still kind of charming and lovable.

Seeing him in Disenchanted just reminded me once again how fun this character is and how Marsden plays it so well. Nancy is a major part of Enchanted, but the film limits how it uses her. Her main purpose is to be a barrier to Robert and Giselle’s happy ending. 

Disenchanted allows Idina Menzel and Nancy to shine. She gets a few musical numbers and also more of a personality. Watching Prince Edward and Nancy together just makes me want to see more of them in the human world and Andalasia. 

If Disney decides to expand or continue the world of Enchanted, a spin-off about Nancy and Prince Edward is the logical next step. They’re so great to watch on-screen together. 

Disenchanted Makes Me Miss When Morgan Wasn’t A Moody Teen 

Look, I understand being a teenager sucks. It sucks even more for teen girls, but moody teens in movies make me want to apologize for my past sins as a teen. They are not fun to watch. Unfortunately, sweet-little child Morgan (Rachel Covey) turns into moody teen Morgan (Gabriella Baldacchino) in Disenchanted. She is infuriating at times. 

In Morgan’s defense, she isn’t the worst teen character. Most of her disrespectful behavior (calling Giselle the stepmom, not her real mom!) is brought on by feeling left out because of the new baby Sofia. And worrying that Giselle doesn’t love her as much because she isn’t her birth daughter.

Her insecurities give her a little bit of an excuse to be terrible. However, she makes it hard to root for her until Giselle goes full evil step-mom. Then Morgan steps nicely into the hero role. You almost can forgive her moody teen ways… almost. 

Amy Adams Is Deliciously Fun As A Villain

Amy Adams has given a lot of great performances (some of them you may have forgotten), but Giselle is one of her most fun characters. She is sugary sweet in Enchanted, and Disenchanted allows her to find her villain within. Disenchanted’s strongest moments are when Giselle turns into the wicked stepmother. 

These moments are fun and give the film the weight it needs to add tension. I enjoy both wicked and sweet Giselle. Amy Adams giving great performances in both films proves that she’s an actor overdue for an Oscar. Maybe not for Disenchanted, but for one of her many great films and performances. 

I’m Glad Disenchanted Has More Animation 

Enchantment’s incorporation of an animated element has always been something I really liked about the film.  Before Giselle heads to New York City,  the first ten minutes are pure animation. Disenchanted uses animation throughout the film.

We first see it as Pip (Griffin Newman) reads the story of Giselle to his children. Then animation is used when Morgan goes to Andalasia. We also see glimpses of an animated Edward. It’s just fun to see the film use more animated elements in Disenchanted. 

This almost makes the film more of a hybrid movie of animation and live-action.

It’s Nice To See Giselle, Robert, Morgan, And Sofia Find A Happy Ending In The Suburbs 

TV shows and movies love New York City, so often the suburbs get a bad reputation. It’s portrayed as boring, mundane, and the place where you lose your soul and spirit -- we’ve all seen those movies and shows. So I completely expected Disenchanted to end with them all moving back to NYC. 

This is why I was pleasantly surprised when they decide to stay in Monroeville and make it work. It shows that a suburban life doesn’t have to be this hellhole that movies and TV shows sometimes make it appear to be. It can be a new fresh and exciting beginning. 

Other Thoughts 

Disenchanted has some Easter Eggs and other things we need to discuss. 

• I love that Rachel Covey, the original Morgan, has a short cameo. It makes me glad that she still got to be involved. 
• Gabriella Baldacchino is a pretty good recast, since Rachel Covey and her look kind of similar.  
• The film really has something against cats. I never associated them with evil villains until this movie said it.  
• Idina Menzel could really sing anything and make it sound great.  
• Did the singing appliances remind anyone else of The Brave Little Toaster?  
• Morgan and Tyson (Kolton Stewart) are a cute couple, so it was nice to see a sprinkle of their romance in the movie. 
• I loved seeing well-known Broadway stars, such as Ann Harada and James Monroe Iglehart, have cameos.  
• Glad to see Alan Tudyk voice yet another character that I loved. 
• Pip definitely needs to join the list of adorable creatures who need more screen time. 

Disenchanted is one of the holiday upcoming movies that I was most looking forward to watching. It doesn’t quite have the same spark as the original film, but it’s an entertaining movie of its own.

It’s been 15 years since Amy Adams brought her fairytale charm to New York City through princess-to-be Giselle, and fans of the live action Disney film have been looking forward to its sequel Disenchanted for quite a while. The time is finally here, as the movie is currently available for streaming with a Disney+ subscription. The Disenchanted cast sees the return of our old favorites — Patrick Dempsey as Robert, Idina Menzel as Nancy and James Marsden’s Prince Edward (though the trailers don’t show nearly enough of him). There are also quite a few new names to the universe, including comedy greats Maya Rudolph, Yvette Nicole Brown and Oscar Nuñez.

Disenchanted will see Giselle and Robert moving their family out of Manhattan and into the suburbs. With Adam Shankman directing and Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz behind the music, we’ve been promised some major musical moments, including Idina Menzel finally getting to sing. The reviews are in to tell us what we need to know about this Disney+ sequel before deciding whether or not to settle in for a movie night with the fam. Let’s see what the critics have to say, starting with CinemaBlend’s review of Disenchanted. Our own Mike Reyes rates the movie 4.5 stars out of 5, saying it one-ups the original and is one of Disney’s best of the year: 

Amelia Emberwing of IGN agrees that this is a “mostly successful” effort, rating the movie a “Good” 7 out of 10. She warns that people hoping for simply more of the original movie might be disappointed, as Disenchanted takes the story in a different direction. The critic says:  

For Moira Macdonald of The Seattle Times, this movie was well worth the wait, Amy Adams is still a dream, and the sequel is filled with lavish musical numbers. The critic rates it 3 out of 4 stars, saying: 

Not all of the critics enjoy Giselle’s turn as a villain, however. Owen Gleiberman of Variety opines that Amy Adams’ goody-two-shoes character was the highlight of Enchanted, and her transformation into a wicked stepmother leads to a “scattershot” sequel. He says: 

Lovia Gyarkye of THR is also underwhelmed with the follow-up to Enchanted, saying it lacks charisma and curiosity, despite the best efforts of its talented cast. According to the review: 

Giselle's sweet naivety was unquestionably part of what made Enchanted such a classic 15 years ago, and it seems like the critics aren’t all in agreement about the arc her character takes in the long-awaited sequel. There are long-running TV shows, and then there's Grey's Anatomy. The medical drama is in the midst of its 21st Season season on the ABC (and streaming with a Hulu subscription), and recently went back to basics with a new set of interns and a renewed focus on medicine. Although we did learn that Yasuda actress Midori Francis will be leaving shortly. One of the other new series regulars is Niko Terho's Dr. Lucas Adams (aka the love interest for Simone Griffith), who is actually Derek and Amelia Shepherd's nephew. But which of McDreamy's sisters is Adams' mother?

Patrick Dempsey's Derek Shepherd notably has four sisters in the Grey's Anatomy universe, most of which only appear for an episode or two throughout its long run in ABC. Amelia recently referenced her sisters, and claimed that Meredith, Addison, and Maggie were much better at that role. And after he was diagnosed with ADHD, the young surgeon reference his parents and their inability to notice he was neurodivergent. The show has been keeping Adams' parentage a mystery for the time being, and Season 20 of Grey's didn't address it at all. While Adams keeps referencing his mysterious parents (including Grandpa Shepherd's death from a shooting), no names have been dropped. So let's break down which McSibling might end up being his McMother.

Nancy Shepherd (Embeth Davidtz)

Perhaps the most obvious choice for Adams' mother would be Nancy Shepherd, played by Matilda actress Embeth Davidtz. She was the first of Derek's siblings that we met on Grey's Anatomy, dating back to her debut back in Season 3. We watched as she judged Meredith and doted on McSteamy, offering a look into the Shepherd's unique family unit. She would eventually return for an episode of Season 15 episode titled "Good Shepherd" which featured a tense dinner with Amelia and her siblings.

Some Grey's Anatomy fans think that Nancy is Lucas Adams' mother thanks to a line in Season 19 which revealed that he was from Connecticut. While not much is known about the Shepard sisters, back in Season 3 it was revealed that Nancy lives in Connecticut. Could this have been our answer? It's unclear, as the mystery about Adams hasn't been answered so far.

Liz Shepherd (Neve Campbell)

Another one of McDreamy's sisters showed up back in Season 9 of Grey's Anatomy was Liz Shepherd, played by Scream icon Neve Campbell. After the plane crash, Liz turned up at Grey Sloan Memorial to donate nerves in hopes of helping to fix Derek's hand and save his surgical career. She appeared in a total of two episodes during this time, and was the only one of Derek's sisters to show up at the hospital to help donate nerves.

Neve Campbell's McSibling hasn't been seen since Season 9, but could that change if she ends up being Adams' mother? The actress' schedule might be complicated after joining Scream 7, but it doesn't seem totally out of the question. We'll just have to wait to see if the Scream Queen returns to Seattle sometime in the future.

Kathleen Shepherd (Amy Acker)

The last Shepherd Sister to show up in Grey's Anatomy is Kathleen, played by Angel icon Amy Acker. She was referenced as far back in Season 3, and was also called by Heather Brooks (RIP) in Season 9 to possibly donate nerves for Derek's hand. In the end she wouldn't appear until the Season 15 episode "Good Shepherd" which was about Amelia's relationship with her family.

Kathleen seemed like the most cruel Shepherd sibling, especially where it concerned Amelia's colorful past and drug history. She even makes a bet about Amelia's break-up with Owen Hunt. It's an episode that shows just how complicated the family unit really is, with Amy Acker giving a strong performance. But like Liz and Nancy, not much is known about Kathleen's husband or location. And as such, she could also very well end up being the mother of Lucas Adams.

Who do you think is Adams' mother on Grey's Anatomy? For now that remains to be seen, but smart money says that one of the above actresses will appear once the mystery is solved. We'll just have to wait to see how it all shakes out as we get deeper into Season 21. Luckily for Amelia, Adams revealed that he's a Shepherd, and the other interns no longer think that they're sleeping together. Adams (who is getting crap from his fellow interns for being a nepo baby) mentioned that his mother is sometimes jealous of how Amelia is able to live her life without caring what other people think. But exactly who is she? Only time will tell. But as fans get more attached to the intern, the debate should get louder.

Grey’s Anatomy has gone back to the beginning with Season 19, and in an effort to recapture the magic of the series that introduced us to the in-over-their-heads interns, a new group of five has emerged. Jules Millin, Benson Kwan, Mika Yasuda, Simone Griffith and Lucas Adams — who was shockingly revealed to be the nephew of one Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd — have joined the ranks of Grey Sloan, and after their first episode, I’ve got some thoughts about this new class of cast members.

“Everything Has Changed” did some pretty heavy lifting, providing updates on veteran characters including Meredith, Owen, Miranda, Jo, Link and more, all while attempting to show how each new intern will contribute to the ensemble individually. I’d say it was successful overall, and the coming weeks will only continue to delve deeper, but here is how I’m feeling about Season 19’s rookie class so far:

Simone Griffith

Simone Griffith — played by Alexis Floyd, who is already a Shondaland player after appearing in Netflix’s Inventing Anna — did a lot in her first appearance. We got an emotional moment between her and Richard (James Pickens Jr.) in which she revealed that her mother died in childbirth at the hospital, thus contributing to the panic attack that made her late for her first day.

Aside from her heartbreaking story, Simone seemed to do a lot of running through the hospital. Will this become a trend? Regardless, it allowed for some comedic moments, particularly when she was wheeling an elderly doctor to a patient, yelling warnings at anyone who risked being bowled over. I liked Alexis Floyd in Inventing Anna, and I’m excited to see more of Simone.  

Lucas Adams 

McDreamy’s legacy at Grey Sloan will live on, as Lucas Adams (played by Niko Terho) was, according to Caterina Scorsone’s Amelia, “Derek’s favorite nephew.” Luke, aka “Skywalker,” reminded me of Alex Karev with his cockiness, but was more George O’Malley with his first-day bad luck. 

Upon learning about his family’s connections to the hospital, I almost wanted to say nepotism was at play for him still having a job after informing the wrong woman that her son died. However, Amelia voiced her skepticism about his chances of making it through the program, and if she were one to play favorites, I don’t think Luke would win that label. I’m a sucker for a twist, so I’m giving Skywalker the benefit of the doubt.

Benson ‘Blue’ Kwan 

Benson Kwan (played by Harry Shum Jr.) is a bit of a wild card for me. He’s definitely competitive, as he told the group at the beginning of the day that he was sizing them up and liking his odds. His nickname, “Blue,” is an apparent reference to blue ribbons, because he always wins. Blue said he made up the story about his brother dying and donating his organs in order to comfort a grieving mother and save more lives. Was it really a lie? Every one of these five misfits is being given a second chance for something, be it family tragedy, bad grades, etc. What is Blue doing here? I’m keeping my eye on this one. 

Jules Millin

We didn’t learn a whole lot about Jules Millin (Adelaide Kane) either, except for the fact that she slept with Link (Chris Carmack) shortly before her first day. While there are clear comparisons to be made between between this and the series premiere with Meredith and Derek, I almost feel like this storyline existed solely as comedic fodder for Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington), whose joyful cackles at each step of Link’s suffering made up for all of the awkwardness Season 18 put the BFFs through. Jules did make one thing clear — she was not in a relationship with Link, and she was not about to sign his HR paper stating otherwise.

Mika Yasuda

Mika Yasuda (Midori Francis) put her foot in her mouth more than once early in the premiere episode — once when she informed everyone that Jules had slept with an attending, and again when she joked that it was “organ-palooza” in reference to a busful of brain-dead passengers. That “dark sense of humor” did not impress Amelia, but Mika got back in her good graces through the compassion she showed for her patient. I hope her “speak first, think second” philosophy is around to stay, as well as her macabre sense of humor, because Grey’s Anatomy could do with a good dose of dark and twisty. 

All in all, I think Grey’s Anatomy’s new beginning is off to a promising start, with some unique personalities amongst the rookies. I look forward to seeing what shenanigans they get into and how their pasts play into their reasons for joining Grey Sloan. Grey’s Anatomy airs at 9 p.m. ET Thursdays on ABC. It’s been over seven years since Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd was killed off of Grey’s Anatomy, meeting his demise by way of car crash and incompetent doctors at the end of Season 11. So it goes to show how strong his relationship with Meredith Grey was that going into Season 19, they are still considered by many to be the series’ flagship couple. That’s a burden that Scott Speedman has to bear, as he talked about what it's like to play Meredith's new beau, Nick Marsh, for an audience that is so passionately invested in Meredith's love life.

Scott Speedman will be back when Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 premieres on October 6, but his role this season has been reduced to recurring, as Ellen Pompeo announced we’ll also be seeing far less of Meredith Grey. It seems like Nick has earned a stamp of approval from the fandom, and the actor told InStyle he knows that’s not something to take for granted. Speedman said: 

With a loyal fandom that still wishes MerDer were a real-life couple, perhaps filling Patrick Dempsey’s shoes was a more daunting task than Scott Speedman was ready for. (He did compare fans’ reactions to The Shining, after all.) Meredith dated other men after Derek’s death, with Nathan Riggs and Andrew DeLuca likely being the most serious, but Nick might just be Meredith’s endgame, since Ellen Pompeo said she will not return to Grey’s full time. 

Whether or not Nick and Meredith ride off into the Minnesota sunset together remains to be seen, but that did seem like the plan Ellen Pompeo’s character hoped for at the end of Season 18. At least it was before Miranda Bailey quit her job and left Meredith as the chief of surgery, and Meredith sent Nick back to the Land of 10,000 Lakes alone. A preview for the new season shows Miranda and Nick both returning after six months, and I can’t wait to get caught up on what’s been going on. Check out the trailer for yourself: 

Meredith had chosen at the end of last season to accept a full-time position at The Grey Center in Minnesota — a decision that was not met with support from her colleagues. Her rant to Nick about being the only one not allowed to leave to pursue other opportunities felt a little too real, after a year-plus of headlines that centered around Pompeo wanting the show to end.

It seems Ellen Pompeo has found an eventual way out, and by proxy, Meredith as well, as Season 19 goes back to the beginning, with a new group of five interns. The drama starts at 9 p.m. ET Thursday, October 6, on ABC. When TV viewers fall in love with a couple on-screen, it’s hard to not want that relationship to continue once the cameras stop rolling. We get so caught up in the moment that it’s an offense to our hearts to imagine a director yelling, “Cut!” and those two people going their separate ways. Chris Meloni and Mariska Hargitay proved that at the Emmy Awards, treating Law & Order fans to multiple adorable moments as the famous non-couple Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler. Grey’s Anatomy alum Patrick Dempsey has experienced this phenomenon as well, and he discussed fans wishing he was married to Ellen Pompeo in real life.

Unlike Law & Order’s Bensler, however, Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd — a.k.a. MerDer — were married on the ABC medical drama, until McDreamy’s life came to an untimely end in Season 11. Even now, seven years after Dempsey exited the series via one of Grey’s Anatomy’s most shocking deaths, the actor knows why audiences connected with the couple. He told People: 

Oh, those pesky real-life spouses really do get in the way, don’t they? I’m just joking, of course, because I would never wish ill will on the real relationships between Dempsey and Jillian Fink — who have been married since 1999 and share three children — and Pompeo and Chris Ivery — who wed in 2007 and also have a trio of little ones.

While Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni seem to be trolling fans with their almost-kisses, there’s probably even less hope for more MerDer romance in the future. Dempsey did make a surprise return to Grey’s Anatomy in Season 17, with McDreamy joining Meredith in her COVID-induced beach hallucinations. But with Meredith rejoining the land of the living, Derek is likely to remain in the big operating room in the sky.

Pompeo, meanwhile, will be back when Grey’s Anatomy returns for Season 19 — albeit in a reduced role, as Meredith will only appear in eight episodes this season. Let’s see what’s in store come October 6: 

It appears six months have passed since the disarray we saw at the end of Grey’s Anatomy’s Season 18. A new class of interns will greet us this season, and Miranda Bailey is back from her retirement — though in what capacity we’ll have to wait and see. I also loved seeing Levi Schmitt, formerly known as “Glasses,” warning the residents to not drop anything inside a patient. From the looks of it, there will be trauma, love, hookups, and more, and I can’t wait.

It’s been seven years since Patrick Dempsey has been a regular part of Grey’s Anatomy. When the series premiered back in 2005, his character, Derek, and Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith were definitely one of the “it” couples, and fans rode the ups and downs of their relationship until McDreamy’s tragic death in Season 11. Now, as the medical drama enters its 19th season, we’re preparing to see far less of Meredith as well, as Pompeo has announced she’ll only appear in eight episodes this season. Opinions have been circulating about how long Grey’s can survive without its lead, and Patrick Dempsey spoke with CinemaBlend about it at Disney's D23 Expo.

Grey’s Anatomy will reportedly pivot its focus away from Meredith and the rest of the veteran doctors in Season 19 to focus on a new class of interns. Patrick Dempsey, who made several appearances from beyond the grave in Season 17 spoke with CinemaBlend, explaining why he thinks the show could maintain its success on ABC even with Ellen Pompeo not returning full time. He said: 

Grey’s Anatomy has certainly seen a lot of actors come and go over the past 18 seasons, including all of its original cast, save for Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. Patrick Dempsey was a huge part of the first 11 seasons, and the show’s continued success in the past seven years since Derek’s shocking death is a good indication that the series is stronger than any one actor. Let’s also not forget that Meredith spent much of Season 17 in a coma and much of Season 18 outside of the hospital with Minnesota beau Nick Marsh. 

The original cast of Grey’s Anatomy captured lightning in a bottle, and Patrick Dempsey said we’ll have to see if lightning strikes twice, telling CinemaBlend:

Grey’s Anatomy vets Caterina Scorsone and Kevin McKidd have voiced their optimism about the five additions to Season 19, with the Owen Hunt actor saying that Alexis Floyd, Niko Terho, Harry Shum Jr., Adelaide Kane and Midori Francis are “brilliant, young, vibrant actors” who are full of passion. Meanwhile, the actress who plays Amelia Shepherd said the new group is “exciting and gorgeous” inside and out.

While we know how many episodes we can expect from Ellen Pompeo, we don’t know where the story will take Meredith, and where she’ll be when she’s not in the Grey Sloan Memorial operating room. Will she follow through with her move to Minnesota, as she wanted to do in Season 18? Or will she go the way of McDreamy and be killed off the series? It does seem unlikely, but given the number of times Meredith has almost died, I’m not making any assumptions.

Patrick Dempsey has been one of the entertainment industry’s most popular leading men for quite some time now. For years, audiences would tune in to Grey’s Anatomy to see him in the role of Dr. Derek Shepherd (a.k.a. McDreamy). Admirers still swoon over the veteran actor and, after his latest change, they’ll likely continue to do so. Dempsey is currently sporting white hair (yes, you read that correctly). And of course, with his new hairstyle, the star was naturally asked about the new hit show House of the Dragon.

For years, the public has known Patrick Dempsey to have immaculate black locks and in more recent years, the salt and pepper style. With that in mind, the white hair caught plenty of people’s attention during the first day of Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim. CinemaBlend’s Law Sharma and Jeff McCobb encountered the actor on the red carpet during the festivities and got a good look at his sweet new look. Check it out for yourself down below: 

The 56-year-old star is definitely owning his new hairdo and, after seeing it, you can definitely understand why one would think that he’d signed on to play a member of the famously white-haired Targaryen clan. To fans’ possible disappointment though, the actor is not joining House of the Dragon (which is streamable with an HBO Max subscription). In actuality, as he explained to Deadline during D23, he had his hair dyed white because of a new role he’s taking on:

Personally, I think Patrick Dempsey pulls off the look well enough that he could indeed rock it on a regular basis. But then again, the salt and pepper ‘do has truly become his thing, and he’ll likely seek to maintain that moving forward. (Of course, as the years go on, don’t be surprised if you see Dempsey rocking a bit more gray.)

The idea of Patrick Dempsey joining the Game of Thrones franchise is still pretty interesting, though. I personally wouldn’t mind seeing him play a more laid back Targaryen, who can provide a bit of levity amid the intense politics, visceral bloodshed and gruesome birth scenes. But it’s likely that viewers are probably more eager to see him back on Grey’s Anatomy than showing up in Westeros. Dempsey’s Derek returned to Grey’s during Season 17 as a vision Meredith Grey encounters during her COVID-19-induced dream. While his final episode in that arc was a “beautiful” second exit from the show, the McDreamy actor didn’t seem to close the door on another return sometime down the road.

At present, though, we wish the Hollywood vet well, as he continues to drive down the actual road for Ferrari. Production kicked off in late August, so it’s possible that he could be sporting that white hair for at least another month or two. In the meantime, fans can continue to gaze at the hairdo – and insert the star into some sweet House of the Dragon fan art should they feel so inclined.

We’ve long awaited our reunion with Amy Adams’ Giselle following the 2007 hit Enchanted, and now we finally have our first peek at its upcoming Disney+ sequel. Just as the Disenchanted cast took the stage at the D23 Expo to share with Disney fans what Giselle’s been up to, the trailer also dropped online. It looks like we can now expect the fairytale character turned New Yorker to transition to life in the suburbs with some exciting reunions, new music and a ton more magic spells. 

In the debut trailer for Disenchanted (above) and set to stream this fall, Amy Adams’ Giselle is still singing to animals in high rise buildings, but she and Patrick Dempsey’s Robert are getting ready to start a new life away from the Big Apple. However, their new home is a “fixer upper," and its problems lead Giselle to look to magic to solve her problems. 

As we learn in the first look at the sequel, when they show their new home and life to old friends James Marsden’s Prince Edward and Idina Menzel’s Nancy Tremaine, Edward gives Giselle a way to make a wish and change things to work in her favor. However, when she decides to wish for a “fairy tale life,” everything goes “terribly wrong” as Giselle puts it, because suburban life begins to look like a place right out of a storybook. And, in a wild twist, Giselle appears to become the “stepmother” stereotype to her adoptive daughter against her will. 

As you may recall from the 2007 film, as Giselle falls in love with Robert, she also creates a loving relationship with his young daughter, Morgan. When we pick up in Disenchanted, Morgan is now all grown up and played by Gabriella Baldacchino instead of Rachel Covey, and Giselle has a new child with Robert. However, as all these fairytale things pop up around their new town after Giselle’s wish is granted, such as talking animals, music numbers and jaw-dropping ball gowns, she begins doing terrible things to Morgan, like locking her in rooms and pushing her into wells. Will Giselle become her own fairytale world’s villain? 

With the trailer capping off with Giselle catching herself saying “Wicked good!” in a bit of a bad gal tone, we’re going to have to get ready to see a new side of the usually gentle protagonist. All the while, there’s a new major character in Maya Rudolph’s Malvina Monroe, who is a major player in the suburb. She gives off big villain vibes too, especially in one scene where she rocks an all-black fairytale getup we previously got a look at back in May. 

Along with the trailer reveal, Disney also revealed the official Disenchanted poster. Take a look:

The tagline is “Happily Never After.” As a longtime fan of Enchanted, the trailer for Disenchanted has me super excited for the sequel. And while we have a good idea of what the plot will be, there’s a lot left to find out about the movie, including Alan Menken’s original music for the movie, following his work on the previous film. Disenchanted is coming to those with a Disney+ subscription on November 24.  

We’ve seen a lot of characters come and go over Grey’s Anatomy’s 18 seasons, and just like the loyal fans, Ellen Pompeo has been there to witness them all. While in some instances it was simply time for the character (or the actor playing them) to move on, Grey’s Anatomy has also delivered some pretty shocking deaths that left us a little more broken than before (RIP, 007). The Meredith Grey actress reflected on the series so far, and she didn’t have to think hard about whose demise she thinks was the saddest.

The actress has starred on Grey’s Anatomy since it premiered in 2005, and as Ellen Pompeo prepares to take a step back from the show in Season 19, she opened up on her podcast Tell Me about losing her on-screen husband Derek Shepherd in Season 11. It was a serious blow for her character and the fans, as she explained when discussing which of the series’ deaths she found the most heartbreaking: 

Ellen Pompeo has spoken before about some of the traumatic events Meredith has suffered alongside Patrick Dempsey’s “McDreamy.” The hospital shooter episode — one of Grey’s Anatomy’s best episodes to date — featured a scene in which Meredith and Cristina see Derek get shot, and Pompeo said the actresses had to “scream and cry and go crazy 30 fucking times,” putting themselves in a dark place for a scene that Pompeo said she wouldn’t do again today. Thinking of it like that, it’s no surprise that Derek’s car crash death would be her saddest, as well as Mark Sloan (Eric Dane’s so-called “McSteamy”), who succumbed in the aftermath of Season 8’s plane crash.

Not all character departures involved such tragic scenarios, however, and Grey’s Anatomy has certainly been known to bring back former cast members to reprise their roles in guest appearances over the seasons. Ellen Pompeo said she had selfish intentions when thinking about who she’d want to return to the show, saying:

These two actors were friends before and after their time on the hit ABC medical drama together, so this choice makes complete sense. Pompeo expressed her sadness at Chambers’ exit at the time, saying she thought Grey’s Anatomy gave Alex Karev the “best send off.” The TV audience, however, largely disagreed. Fans were livid that Alex ditched his wife Jo via letter, which said that he had decided to move to Kansas and reunite with his ex-wife Izzie and their children he didn’t know existed.

Alas, when characters leave, they’re often replaced by others, and Season 19 has already added some new faces to the hospital. Grey’s Anatomy actress Caterina Scorsone has said the new cast members are “gorgeous” both “inside and out,” and I’m looking forward to that October 6 premiere at 9 p.m. ET on ABC. Quicker than you can say Disney live-action remake, in 2007, Amy Adams’ Giselle went from 2D to 3D and in the flesh during Enchanted. The modern musical fairytale served as a fun love letter to the Mouse House's classic princesses and was a charming comedy for the whole family. After a 15-year break and numerous questions regarding the sequel’s future, Disenchanted has finally arrived, bringing with it those beloved characters as well as some new faces to the Disney+ exclusive.  

So, before or after you watch the Adam Shankman-directed musical comedy (with new music from Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz), you will probably want to know where you’ve seen and heard the Disenchanted cast before. Well, worry no more, for we have put together a quick yet comprehensive rundown of the actors in the long-awaited sequel.  

Amy Adams (Giselle)

An Enchanted movie just couldn’t happen without Amy Adams, and the actress is indeed returning to the role of Giselle from Disenchanted. The movie will take place 15 years after Giselle’s happily-ever-after with Robert and follow the couple as they move to a new house in a town called Monroeville. When speaking about reprising the role last year, Adams said it was “humbling” to do even more singing and dancing “not in my 20s.”

Since last taking on the leading role in Enchanted, Adams has become one of the most prolific and decorated names in Hollywood, earning two Golden Globes (American Hustle and Big Eyes), multiple Oscar nominations for movies like The Fighter and Vice, and praise for roles in the likes of Arrival, Sharp Objects, and Nocturnal Animals.

Patrick Dempsey (Robert Philip)

Giselle’s true love Robert is also back, with Patrick Dempsey returning to complete Enchanted’s sweet romantic pairing. In the 2007 flick, Giselle and Robert were complete opposites and from completely different worlds, with her being from a literal fairytale and him being a widowed divorce lawyer. But as the events of the film take place, Robert and Giselle fall for one another and form a cute family with Robert’s young daughter, Morgan.

Dempsey, who was in the early days of his run on Grey’s Anatomy when Enchanted was released, has remained just as busy since then, despite leaving the medical drama in 2015 (he did briefly return for the show’s 17th season). Movies like Made of Honor, Bridget Jones’s Baby, and The Art of Racing in the Rain have all featured the versatile actor in the past decade-and-a-half.

James Marsden (Prince Edward)

The jolly singing Prince Edward of Andalasia also returns in Disenchanted. James Marsden plays the role once again after he provided some particularly memorable and hilarious moments in the original. While he and Giselle originally fell in love in the fairytale world, once Giselle met Robert, Edward also found a new partner in Robert’s girlfriend Nancy, and at the end of the film, they got married in Andalasia.

Already a massive star prior to his appearance in Enchanted thanks in part to the X-Men movies, Marsden has continued to be a major force in Hollywood. Roles in movies like Sonic the Hedgehog and its 2022 sequel, as well as appearances on the shows like 30 Rock, Westworld, Dead to Me, and The Stand have all kept Marsden in the spotlight the past decade-plus. 

Idina Menzel (Nancy Tremaine)

Nancy Tremaine is also back for Disenchanted, once again being played by the talented Idina Menzel, who has since become a Disney princess herself as the voice of Elsa in Frozen. Funny enough, in the first movie, Menzel did not get to sing a single song, despite her incredible voice. This time around, it looks like the actress will get a music number or two. Which makes sense, because as you can imagine, spending time in Andalasia inspires the song in people. 

In addition to portraying Elsa in the incredibly successful Frozen franchise, Menzel has also appeared in the 2021 Prime Video adaptation of Cinderella as well as the A24 movie Uncut Gems alongside Adam Sandler in 2019.

Gabriella Baldacchino (Morgan Philip)

Robert’s daughter Morgan has grown up since Enchanted, and in Disenchanted, she will return. However, the original actress has been replaced with newcomer Gabriella Baldacchino. Morgan was originally played by Rachel Covey, who is not currently working in acting (Covey has gone on to write and score her own musical called, Painting Faye Salvez though). 

Baldacchino is 21, has a musical theatre background and will make her feature film debut with Disenchanted. 

Maya Rudolph (Malvina Monroe)

Disenchanted's villain will be played by Maya Rudolph, as the actress herself shared in 2021. In the 2007 movie, Giselle was haunted by Susan Sarandon’s Queen Narissa, who was Prince Edward’s evil stepmother, a sorceress who felt threatened by Giselle becoming the new queen. Rudolph’s character, Malvina Monroe, oversees the new neighborhood Giselle and Robert move into, leading to some major conflicts.

Rudolph, who is probably best known for her time on Saturday Night Live and role in the 2011 raunchy comedy Bridesmaids, has done a little bit of everything throughout her career. Comedies and dramas, animated movies and live-action adventures, she’s done it all. She currently leads the Apple TV+ original series Loot.

Oscar Nuñez (Edgar)

Also among the new cast joining Disenchanted is Oscar Nuñez, who provides the face and voice of Malvina’s magical mirror, Edgar.

Nuñez is well known for playing Oscar Martinez on The Office alongside Steve Carell, John Krasinski and the rest of its hilarious cast throughout the show’s run The funny actor has also been seen in movies like 2009’s The Proposal and 2017’s Baywatch. He also showed up in the 2022 action romance film The Lost City earlier in 2022.

Yvette Nicole Brown (Rosaleen)

Disenchanted is packed full of great comedy actors. Yvette Nicole Brown is also part of the Disenchanted cast as Rosaleen, one of Malvina’s evil neighborhood minions. 

The actress is best known for playing Shirley in Community, Dani in CBS’ The Odd Couple and as Dina in ABC’s The Mayor. She has also held numerous movie roles in films, including Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, Avengers: Endgame, and Repo Men, to name a few. 

Jayma Mays (Ruby)

Also in the cast of Disenchanted is Jayma Mays, who takes on the role of Ruby, another one of Malvina’s neighborhood cronies. 

Mays is most recognizable as Emma Pillsbury in FOX’s musical series Glee. The actress has also previously held roles in 2011’s The Smurfs movie, Paul Blart: Mall Cop and in a recurring role in The Millers. 

Kolton Stewart (Tyson Monroe)

Locke & Key’s Kolton Stewart, appears in Disenchanted as Tyson Monroe, the son of Maya Rudolph’s villain. 

Like much of the cast of the Disenchanted sequel, Stewart has a song and dance background. His previous work includes roles on shows like The Expanse, Timeline, and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, to name only a few.

Ann Harada

Another Broadway talent joining the musical is Ann Harada, who shows up in Disenchanted as one of Robert’s fellow commuters 

Harada was notably part of the original cast of award-winning Broadway musical comedy Avenue Q as the character of Christmas Eve, along with taking the stage for Les Misérables, 9 to 5 and Cinderella. Harada recently appeared  in the Schmigadoon! cast on Apple TV+ and guest starred in Blue Bloods.

Michael McCorry Rose 

A newcomer to Hollywood, Michael McCorry Rose is part of the Disenchanted cast as one of the commuters on the train into New York City, as seen in the movie’s magical trailer.. 

The actor has been part of Broadway musicals, including the Tony Award winning musical A Gentleman’s Guide To Love and Murder, along with being part of the casts of Wicked and the first National Tour of Anastasia. He has long collaborated with one of the Disenchanted songwriters, Stephen Schwartz, and has also performed with orchestras and symphonies.

James Monroe Iglehart

Broadway’s Genie James Monroe Iglehart appears in Disenchanted as another one of the commuters on Robert’s train into the city. 

The actor won a 2014 Tony for bringing Genie to life in the Aladdin stage musical, but he also took the mantle of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in Hamilton from 2017 to 2021. He also voiced the role of Lance Strongbow in Disney Channel’s Tangled series among many other TV credits.

Rob Lowe famously turned down the role of Derek Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy, which likely turned out for the best for all involved. Fellow heartthrob Patrick Dempsey became the leading love interest, the neuro god, the McDreamy — a moniker that Lowe said was definitely not for him. The 9-1-1: Lone Star actor may agree Dempsey was the right man for the role, but maybe it was still the one that got away, and he recently had literally the best idea (or at least the silliest idea) for how he could still appear as a McGuest star on the longtime ABC medical drama.

The Parks and Recreation actor certainly hasn’t wanted for opportunities since turning down the role of Derek Shepherd. Although Rob Lowe (jokingly?) estimated that the decision cost him $70 million, certainly there are no regrets to be had, so sayeth fans of Parks and Recreation. However, seven seasons after McDreamy’s tragic death (and Patrick Dempsey’s exit from the show) Lowe had a pretty wild idea about how he could still reclaim the lost role to become a part of the Grey’s Anatomy canon, telling Insider: 

I am not hating this idea at all. Alternate universes, multiverses and metaverses all tend to make my head hurt, but who better to tackle the subject on a metaphorical level than a brain surgeon? It’s not like Grey’s Anatomy always makes sense anyway — remember when Izzie had sex with a ghost? Maybe that was the nexus event that broke the Grey's multiverse open. 

There are lots of possibilities here. If we’re time traveling, I might just be inclined to go back to the time when the President of the United States asked Derek to come work for him. But in this scenario, Rob Lowe gets to Washington to find Martin Sheen as President Bartlet, and now it’s just The West Wing. (You know you’d watch that crossover.)

The Grey’s Anatomy writers have done some bizarro things in their 18 seasons so far, so I give them enough credit to be able to plot out a believable-enough way to wrinkle the time-space continuum. In a hospital full of equipment like X-ray machines, hyperbaric chambers, etc., I'd imagine there’s enough energy flying around the place to create alt-dimentional realities.

Maybe we cross into a world where Rob Lowe accepted the role of McDreamy and IS that version's Dr. Shepherd. Maybe in that universe Cristina Yang never left, and Alex Karev gave his wife (and the viewers!) a proper goodbye, and the musical episode was a hit! 

If we’re talking the metaverse, perhaps at some point long after Patrick Dempsey’s Derek died in Season 11, Rob Lowe would becomes his AI resurrection, allowing the ferry boat scrub cap to operate another day! Any tendencies for McDreamy 2.0 to glitch would be great fodder for dramatic brain surgery scenes, clearly.

Of course — because logic has no place in this conversation — we’d have to get Rob Lowe and Patrick Dempsey in the operating room together. What a battle of egos that would be!

I know, the probability that we’ll ever see Rob Lowe’s version of Derek Shepherd is next to zero, but hey, we never imagined seeing Patrick Dempsey reprise the role himself either! After McDreamy got taken out by a semi and incompetent doctors in 2015 (amid accusations regarding the actor’s “terrorizing” on-set behavior), he appeared in mutiple Season 17 episodes in Meredith’s COVID hallucinations. To this day, fans are still watching for signs that he’ll make another appearance.

Derek Shepherd has already risen from the dead once, so to speak. In Season 17, Patrick Dempsey made a surprising return to Grey’s Anatomy, which had killed off his character in Season 11 amid building tension behind the scenes, to reunite with Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey in her unconscious COVID beach hallucinations. McDreamy helped his widow realize she wasn’t ready to leave their children behind, and she returned to the conscious world, leaving Derek in the afterlife, once and for all — right?  

Some fans aren’t so sure. In fact, thanks to a recent Wordle-inspired tweet from the official Grey’s Anatomy account, some think Krista Vernoff and company were dropping subtle hints ahead of the ABC medical drama’s Season 18 spring premiere suggesting another MerDer reunion is in the works. Take a look at the tweet in question:  

I’m sorry, just a sticky note? When we’re talking about Grey’s Anatomy, there’s no such thing as just a sticky note. Especially a blue sticky note — the “something blue” that Cristina Yang gifted to Meredith ahead of her and Derek’s courthouse wedding. When the surgeons couldn’t find the time to sneak away from the hospital, they wrote their vows on the blue sticky note, signed it, and lived happily ever after-ish … until Season 11. 

A blue Post-It is as meaningful as when “Chasing Cars” starts playing during the show — something is going down, and Twitter users were quick to call the show out.

Indeed, that fan is correct. Ahead of Patrick Dempsey’s Season 17 return, Grey’s Anatomy teased fans with what we thought at the time was just a sweet call-back — a tweet featuring a blue Post-It that read “See you tonight,” and was signed as “Grey’s” in the spot where Meredith and Derek had signed their own names. You better believe Grey’s Anatomy fans have receipts.

Fool me once, shame on me, Grey’s Anatomy, but if you’re really going to bring Derek Shepherd back again just to break our hearts for a third time, shame on you! So is there any chance this could actually be happening?

Death on Grey’s Anatomy has never meant we’ll never see the deceased characters again. Kate Burton has continued to appear as Meredith’s mother Ellis Grey since her Season 3 death. We also saw pre-Friday Night Lights Kyle Chandler resurrect his character Dylan Young after a shocking death, as well as Jeffrey Dean Morgan coming back as Denny Duquette to signal Izzie Stevens’ brain tumor. And that’s not to mention all of the other fan favorites who revealed themselves on Meredith’s COVID beach. 

So could they bring McDreamy back again? Sure. Whether they should is another question altogether. Fans were devastated by the loss of Derek Shepherd in Season 11, and certainly shed some tears when he left again in Season 17. If Grey’s Anatomy keeps bringing back Derek from beyond the grave, it’s going to lose the emotional gravitas that Patrick Dempsey holds over the fans. 

The man himself seemed to be keeping his options open following his Season 17 appearance, as Patrick Dempsey cautioned, “Never say never” about another potential return to Grey’s Anatomy. With the hit drama’s recent renewal for Season 19, they’ve got a whole new batch of episodes to fit him into, if they wanted to and the time was right. 

Is that time now? Meredith has started a new relationship with Scott Speedman’s Nick Marsh, so it might be a strange time to bring McDreamy back. However, Ellen Pompeo said on her podcast Tell Me that Meredith would be returning to neurosurgery in Season 18. Might that move be inspired by a new sighting of her late husband? Addison Montgomery has been back on Grey’s Anatomy as well, and she had an emotional moment mourning her ex-husband at the beginning of Season 18. 

Sure, the tweet could very likely have just been an acknowledgement of the Wordle phenomenon — which we’ve been playing while we wait for Grey’s to come back — with the blue squares resembling blue sticky notes. Where’s the fun in that, though? Let the fans dream!

Grey’s Anatomy is known as much for its romantic entanglements as it is for anything pertaining to medicine. There have been a lot — a lot — of relationships (and even some weddings) over the course of 18 seasons, and not every doctor can be McDreamy when it comes to romance (even he wasn’t perfect — see below). I took a look back at the staff of Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital (formerly Seattle Grace) and picked out the nine doctors who were definitely better in the medical field than the love department. 

First, a couple of notes, because I know as Grey’s fans, we’re very protective of our favorite characters. Being bad at relationships or going after the wrong person does not make these characters bad people. There are some fan favorites here, so consider yourself warned. Also, I chose only from hospital staff, so you won’t find Jo’s abusive husband Paul on this list, even though we can all agree he was the worst, right? With that out of the way, let’s get to the list of worst love interests on Grey’s Anatomy. 

Derek Shepherd

I’m going to kick this off with a hot take. Derek Shepard (Patrick Dempsey) was one half of the series’ flagship couple, so it’s kind of hard to believe he has a place on this list. But MerDer’s relationship wasn’t always Post-It notes and beach reunions. Some of the couple’s earlier interactions were really cringe, particularly Derek slut-shaming Meredith in Season 2 (you know, after he got back together with the wife he had forgotten to mention). Let’s not forget in Season 11 he kissed another woman while working in D.C. Sorry, McDreamy, but as Meredith Grey’s husband, I’m holding you to a higher standard.

Eliza Minnick

When Eliza Minnick (Marika Domińczyk) showed up in Season 13 to revamp the residency program, she made exactly one friend — Arizona Robbins. In fact, it seemed Minnick was always either pissing somebody off or flirting with Arizona. When Minnick was (rightfully) fired after the fire incident in the hospital, she ghosted the only person who cared, ignoring Arizona’s calls and moving out of her apartment.

George O'Malley

I love George O’Malley. I mean, forget Sean Connery or Daniel Craig, George O’Malley is my favorite 007. But his role as a significant other was seriously lacking. George (T.R. Knight) was involved in the hospital's syphilis outbreak in Season 1 (not completely his fault but still). He cheated on Callie, which was an ill-advised marriage in the first place, and his relationship with Izzie was so bad even the actors themselves hated it. Let’s not even talk about when he slept with Meredith. Poor George just needed to set up camp in the friend zone.

Nico Kim

Nico Kim (Alex Landi) hasn’t had a whole lot of character development since his arrival in Season 15, and unfortunately seems to be used mostly as a device for on-off boyfriend Levi Schmitt’s journey of self-discovery. This hasn’t allowed viewers to see Nico do much more than treat Schmitt badly so that Schmitt can overcome the situation and thrive. How are they even still together?

Leah Murphy

We all know a Leah, right? A person who maybe gets a little too attached, a little too quickly? I felt bad for Leah Murphy (Tessa Ferrer) that she never seemed to be on the same page as her romantic partners, but not bad enough not to groan every time she was on-screen in a non-medical capacity.

Owen Hunt

Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) made this list not for his PTSD-triggered attack on Cristina, but for a number of other offenses, like cheating on her, and yelling, “You killed our baby!” in front of all of their colleagues at a child’s birthday party. Things didn’t get better with Amelia, where he continued to be controlling and manipulative. And then there's Teddy, his current wife, but I’m not sure why that's even a thing, considering the terrible way he treated her when he found out about her romantic past with her best friend Allison. A proficient trauma surgeon to be sure, but great partner, not so much. 

April Kepner

There’s a lot to love about April Kepner (Sarah Drew), including the bond she shared with Jackson Avery. But man they didn’t have an easy road. April experienced a whole rollercoaster of feelings after losing her virginity, and she picked a very fragile time in their relationship to join the Army and go overseas for three months. We also really have to talk about poor Matthew. April straight-up abandoned Matthew at the altar to elope with Jackson. She and Matthew gave it another go in Season 14, and that didn't last either. I mean, look, she even admitted she's the worst.

Preston Burke

Like Derek and Meredith, Cristina and Burke were one of Grey’s Anatomy’s main couples in Season 1. But it is so hard to rewatch their relationship play out, as Burke (Isaiah Washington) constantly punished Cristina for things happening in their personal lives by withholding professional opportunities from her. Did Seattle Grace even have an HR department? Then Burke pressured her into a big wedding after she said that’s not what she wanted, and when she finally agreed to do it his way, he left her (with no eyebrows, at that) because then and only then, he decided he didn’t want to change her.

Jason Myers

Jason Myers (Charles Michael Davis) is the worst love interest in Grey’s Anatomy’s 18 seasons so far, and I don’t even think it’s close. From the start Jason was disrespectful and didn’t trust Jo, but the relationship really took a dangerous turn during a physical altercation. Jason grabbed Jo’s arm, she hit him, he hit her back, and when Jo fought him off, he fell, hitting his head and requiring surgery. When he woke up, he had the audacity to talk about pressing charges, but Alex talked him out of it. That was the last time viewers saw Jason, and we were not sorry to see him go.

Grey’s Anatomy will continue to see love interests come and go from the hospital, especially with all of the new characters the show has been introducing (did someone say Minnesota spinoff?), and it just wouldn’t be as fun if every character were the perfect romantic partner. Fox, Holly Hunter, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Whoopi Goldberg are just a handful of great ‘80s actors who made an impact on movies, and pop culture in general, in one way or another. 

But with time, some of use have forgotten what the heroes and villains of those beloved ‘80s movies and TV shows have been up to in the decades since they made their mark on the world. Well, not any longer, as we have put together a rather comprehensive list of those familiar faces and what they’ve been up to all these years. 

Whoopi Goldberg

Throughout the 1980s, Whoopi Goldberg proved time and time again that she was a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood, receiving multiple accolades and awards for movies like The Color Purple and Jumping Jack Flash. Even though she is not in as many high-profile movies as she was in the ‘80s and ‘90s, Goldberg has remained a major player in show business as one of the hosts of the long-running daytime talk show The View, with a major role in the 2021 adaptation of The Stand, and in the Amazon original series Harlem. 

Elisabeth Shue

The Karate Kid, Adventures in Babysitting, and Back to the Future Part II, are just a few iconic ‘80s movies Elisabeth Shue appeared in throughout the early stages of her career. The Academy Award and Golden Globe nominee (1995’s Leaving Las Vegas) is still doing what she does best all these years later, with a collection of movies and TV shows including Greyhound, The Boys, and most recently, Cobra Kai, in which she reprised her beloved character, Ali Mills. 

Judd Nelson

Judd Nelson, the Brat Pack member who made a name for himself with his portrayal of bad boy with a heart of gold John Bender in The Breakfast Club, has remained just as busy in the decades since he became an undeniable heartthrob. More recently, Nelson has provided voice work for animated series like Transformers: Power of the Primes and Ben 10: Omniverse, and appeared in movies like Dead Water and Girl in the Basement. He is set to appear in the upcoming remake of The Most Dangerous Game, per Deadline.

Michael J. Fox

There are few actors who can match the talent, charm, and likability of Michael J. Fox, and with movies like Back to the Future, Teen Wolf, and The Secret of My Success, it’s hard to deny that. Despite being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1998, Fox remained busy in film and television throughout the first two decades of the 21st Century with appearances on Curb Your Enthusiasm, Scrubs, and his own sitcom The Michael J. Fox Show. However, Fox stepped away from acting in November 2020 due to ongoing health issues, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Molly Ringwald

Between 1984 and 1986, Molly Ringwald appeared in Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Pretty in Pink, all of which are arguably some of the best ‘80s movies. Ringwald’s success continued through the ’90s, into the 2000s, and even today with roles in romantic comedies like The Kissing Booth franchise, Creepshow, and Riverdale, on which she portrays Mary Andrews. 

Chevy Chase

In the 1980s, Chevy Chase went from Saturday Night Live stand-out to one of the biggest box office draws with Caddy Shack, Fletch, and the National Lampoon’s Vacation franchise, to name only a few. All these years later, Chase remains a major star in the world of comedy with shows like Community and a list of movies that includes The Last Laugh, The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee, and Panda vs. Aliens.

Anthony Michael Hall

Michael Anthony Hall appeared in some of the biggest movies of the 1980s, including National Lampoon’s Vacation, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Weird Science, those final two coming out just months apart. Hall is just as busy these days with appearances in movies like the 2021 horror flick Halloween Kills and a list of TV shows that includes Riverdale, The Blacklist, and The Goldbergs.

Holly Hunter

Throughout the 1980s, Holly Hunter found success with a variety of roles, including standout performances in Raising Arizona, Broadcast News, and End of the Line, all of which came out in 1987. Over the years, Hunter has continued to bring characters to life in movies like The Big Sick, The Incredibles franchise, and multiple TV shows like The Comey Rule, Mr. Mayor, and Succession, to name only a few. 

Emilio Estevez

Emilio Estevez had only appeared in two of his father’s movies — Badlands and Apocalypse Now — by the time the 1980s kicked off, but he would be a major Hollywood force by the time the decade wrapped up, thanks to roles in The Outsiders, The Breakfast Club, St. Elmo’s Fire, and Young Guns. Estevez has spent much of the past decade-and-a-half writing and directing various film and television projects, but he did return to the small screen in 2021 to reprise his role of Gordon Bombay in the Disney+ series The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.

Rob Lowe

Rob Lowe became one of the biggest heartthrobs of the 1980s thanks to appearances in The Outsiders, St. Elmo’s Fire, and several other iconic movies. In the years since then, Lowe has found tremendous success on television, including shows like The West Wing, Parks and Recreation, and most recently, 9-1-1: Lone Star, a series he has led since its inception in 2020.

Val Kilmer

In the 1980s, Val Kilmer played an assortment of roles in movies like Top Secret!, Real Genius, Top Gun, and Willow, carving a place out for himself in the annals of Hollywood greats. That success would follow Kilmer throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, but the talented actor would face a major challenge later on when he was diagnosed with throat cancer, a battle that would end with him losing the ability to speak. Despite that, he released the heartfelt and enlightening documentary, Val, in 2021.

Ralph Macchio

Whether he was making us cry in The Outsiders or leaving us on the edges of our seats in The Karate Kid, Ralph Macchio gave it his all in the 1980s, turning out a number of box office hits. Since 2018, Macchio has once again been playing Daniel LaRusso, though instead of on the big screen, Cobra Kai is leg sweeping the competition on Netflix.

Winona Ryder

In the final two years of the 1980s, Winona Ryder made a name for herself with stellar performances in Beetlejuice, Heathers, and Great Balls of Fire!, and she has really not stopped since. Since 2016, Ryder has been one of the biggest stars of the Netflix series Stranger Things, which is slated to return for a fourth season at some point in 2022.

Ally Sheedy

The fifth and final member of The Breakfast Club cast to be featured on this list, Ally Sheedy was a massive star in the 1980s with movies like WarGames, St. Elmo’s Fire, Short Circuit, and several others. Sheedy’s most recent film appearance came in 2016 with a cameo in X-Men: Apocalypse.

Matt Dillon

In the 1980s, Matt Dillon starred in movies like The Outsiders, Rumble Fish, Drugstore Cowboy, and nearly a dozen others, cementing his place as one of the most prolific actors of the decade. Dillon hasn’t really slowed down all that much since then, with his most recent projects including titles like Land of Dreams, Capone, and Wes Anderson's mysterious upcoming movie, Asteroid City.

Jennifer Grey

Jennifer Grey will always be remembered as Frances “Baby” Houseman in Dirty Dancing, a role that capped off an impressive run that also included Red Dawn and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. More recently, though, Grey has been in movies like Untogether and Bittersweet Symphony as well as several TV shows including Dancing with the Stars (which she won), The Conners, and a three-episode arc on Grey’s Anatomy.

Jennifer Beals

Jennifer Beals became an international sensation upon the release of Flashdance in 1983, and she hasn’t really slowed down since then. Over the course of the past few decades, Beals has made appearances in successful movies and TV shows, including Swamp Thing, The L Word: Generation Q, and the Star Wars upcoming series The Book of Boba Fett for Disney+.

Lea Thompson

All the Right Moves, Red Dawn, Back to the Future, Howard the Duck, and Back to the Future Part II are just some of the movies that featured Lea Thompson in the 1980s, a decade that would kick off one hell of a career. Thompson has remained busy over the years and has even directed her fair share of projects. This list includes everything from The Goldbergs to Stargirl, and Mom to Young Sheldon, with multiple others in-between.

Eric Stoltz

Even though he was recast in Back to the Future, Eric Stoltz had and impressive run in the 1980s with Mask, Some Kind of Wonderful, and Say Anything…, to name only a few. That run of successes continued as the years went by and eventually turned into work for Stoltz behind the scenes, including directing credits on shows like Law and Order, Glee, and Madame Secretary, and movies like Class Rank and Confessions of a Teenage Jesus Jerk.

Lou Diamond Phillips

Lou Diamond Phillips will probably always be remembered for his performances in La Bamba and Stand and Deliver, and rightfully so, but the talented actor has made several other contributions over the years. Recently, Phillips has landed roles on Longmire, Blue Bloods, Fear the Walking Dead, Prodigal Son, and multiple other projects in film and television.

Mary Stuart Masterson

Mary Stuart Masterson, who would go on to lead movies like Fried Green Tomatoes and Benny and Joon in the 1990s, found success in the 1980s in Some Kind of Wonderful, Chances Are, and Immediate Family, to name only a few. Following a 13-year absence from the big screen, Masterson returned in 2017 with As You Were, which she followed up with Skin and Daniel Isn’t Real. More recently, Masterson had a main role on the ABC legal drama, For Life.

Kevin Kline

The 1980s were good to Kevin Kline, who appeared in The Big Chill, Silverado, Cry Freedom, and A Fish Called Wanda (a role that earned him an Academy Award), though the good times never really stopped for the versatile actor. In 2021 alone, Kline appeared in Here Today, The Starling, The Good House, and continued to provide the voice of Mr. Calvin Fischoeder on the hit animated series Bob’s Burgers. Still no word on a Dave sequel, though.

Sean Astin

Sean Astin made his film debut in The Goonies in 1985, and his career has been one of the most consistent in Hollywood ever since. The past 35-plus years have seen him show up in Rudy, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and countless other successful movies. His television career is just as impressive, with everything from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to Stranger Things, and Supergirl to Brooklyn Nine-Nine. 

Adrienne Barbeau

Adrienne Barbeau kicked off the 1980s with appearances in three of the best John Carpenter movies — The Fog, Escape from New York, and The Thing (she was the voice of the computer and only woman in the cast) — as well as other classics like Creepshow and The Cannonball Run. In recent years, Barbeau has appeared in TV adaptations of Swamp Thing and Creepshow, as well as American Horror Stories and Cowboy Bebop.

Jerry O'Connell

Jerry O’Connell gave an unforgettable performance as Vernon “Vern” Tessio in Rob Reiner’s Stephen King adaptation Stand By Me in 1986, one that people still talk about 35 years after the fact. O’Connell has remained quite busy over the years, with multiple animated films that have seen him voice Superman. On top of that, he has been featured on The Big Bang Theory, Carter, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and even his own daytime talk show, Jerry O’.

Corey Feldman

In the 1980s, Corey Feldman became one of the most dependable young actors, with movies like Gremlins, The Goonies, Stand By Me, The Lost Boys, and The ‘Burbs. Over the years, Feldman has appeared in countless movies, TV shows, and documentaries, with his most recent appearance being in the 2021 slasher 13 Fanboy, in which he plays a version of himself. He has also written a series of albums, including the 2021 release, Love Returns.

Patrick Dempsey

The 1987 release of Can’t Buy Me Love instantly made Patrick Dempsey a household name, and he hasn’t let go of his place in pop culture since. Whether it’s with Grey’s Anatomy or Enchanted (which has a sequel, Disenchanted, on the way), Dempsey has remained a dreamy leading man on the big screen and small screen alike, and it doesn’t look like he’s going anywhere anytime soon.

Steve Guttenberg

Between the Police Academy movies, Cocoon, and Short Circuit, it’s safe to say that Steve Guttenberg had a nice run in the 1980s, and lucky for him (and us), the hits never really stopped coming. In recent years, “The Gut” has balanced between comedy series like The Goldbergs and legal dramas like Roe v. Wade, with all kinds of other work to boot, including a 2020 appearance on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

Zach Gilligan

Zach Gilligan’s run in Hollywood started with a little 1984 movie called Gremlins, which he followed up with Nothing Lasts Forever and Waxwork to close out the decade. Since then, Gilligan has appeared in countless film and TV roles, and even appeared as his Gremlins character (alongside Gizmo) in the Mountain Dew Super Bowl commercial.

Michael Winslow

Michael Winslow, also known as The Man of 10,000 Sound Effects, had an insane record in the 1980s, appearing in Spaceballs, Police Academy, Gremlins, and multiple other timeless classics. Winslow has continued to share his talents with the world in the decades since breaking out as one of the most talented beat-boxers around. In 2021, he even appeared on America’s Got Talent.

This may appear to be an exhaustive list of iconic '80s actors, but this is barely scratching the surface. Who knows, maybe we'll make another list of all the stars we forgot, or perhaps touch on those big names of the 1990s.

Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd’s love story on Grey’s Anatomy will likely go down as one of the greatest romances in television history. Forget the fact that McDreamy was killed off of the ABC medical drama back in Season 11, and that Season 18 has Meredith well on her way to new love with Dr. Nick Marsh. MerDer will live on forever in the hearts of Grey’s Anatomy fans. But Ellen Pompeo has revealed she was “horrified” with one specific moment from Meredith and Derek’s past — one that fans have held onto as one of the show’s most iconic moments.

On her podcast Tell Me, Ellen Pompeo spoke with former Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay about the famous “Pick me. Choose me. Love me” scene on Grey’s Anatomy. Back in the Season 2 episode "Bring the Pain," Derek was struggling over whether to divorce Addison and continue a relationship with Meredith, or break things off with the then-intern and give his marriage another chance. Meredith confronted Derek at the hospital and tearfully begged the neurosurgeon to sign the divorce papers. Pompeo said she was appalled at what was being asked of her character. 

The tears were real, guys. Ellen Pompeo said that while her 12-year-old daughter is not allowed to watch Grey’s Anatomy yet, she did happen upon the famous scene online one day. The apple didn't fall far from the tree, as Pompeo's daughter had quite a similar reaction to the “terrible” scene. In the star's words:

Ellen Pompeo makes a good point in saying that Meredith’s pleading for love probably shouldn’t be held as the pinnacle of romantic moves. Know your worth, Meredith and all the other women out there!

And not for nothing, but Derek picked Addison, chose Addison, and loved Addison following Meredith’s desperate speech, at least for a while. MerDer was an inevitable conclusion, of course, and the couple eventually married (three weddings in fact) and had three children together.

The surgeons of Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital have a lot going on in this season of Grey’s Anatomy so far. Richard is revamping the residency program, Addison Montgomery has her eye on a Catherine Fox Award with her uterine transplant surgery, and Amelia is working is with David Hamilton and Kai Bartley to cure Parkinson’s. But it sounds like Meredith’s got something cooking as well, as she feels the post-COVID pressure to do something monumental. 

Ellen Pompeo spoke to Dr. Sanjay Gupta on her podcast Tell Me with Ellen Pompeo, where she discussed her interest in the microbiome, and the role that gut health plays in being able to fight disease. Pompeo’s personal interest is going to bleed into her character’s plot, as it were, with Pompeo revealing that Meredith is about to take her ferry boat scrub cap in a direction that her late husband, Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd, would likely approve of. In her words:

Meredith’s upcoming change of specialty from chief of general surgery back to neurosurgery satisfies two purposes. The study of “our second brain” will be her way of contributing something significant to the medical community in the show's fictional aftermath of the pandemic. And switching back to neurosurgery is also way to bring part of star neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd back into the hospital. 

Longtime Grey’s Anatomy fans might remember that Meredith’s first preference was neuro — and certainly Derek had something to do with that — but after she was caught tampering with Derek’s Alzheimer’s trial, she switched her focus to general surgery. Perhaps Addison’s presence in Seattle sparked something in Meredith? Derek’s ex-wife broke down in an elevator upon her return, saying that being in the hospital without Derek made his death feel real. 

But along with any motivations related to McDreamy, we know Meredith feels the pressure about what her next move will be professionally. In the Season 18 premiere “Here Comes the Sun,” Ellis Grey appeared in Meredith’s dream asking what she was going to do now that she survived COVID. The surgeon confided to her friend (and potential love interest) Nick Marsh — who survived his own medical trauma — that she was afraid to fail in her first venture since being sick. 

Does Meredith’s big change also mean she’ll have a bigger role in David Hamilton’s Parkinson’s research? Meredith brought in Derek’s sister Amelia — a star neurosurgeon in her own right — who’s already hit the ground running. Since this new storyline for Meredith hasn’t yet been addressed on Grey’s Anatomy, we’ll just have to wait and see what all of this means, and whether it'll include another surprise cameo from Patrick Dempsey.

The Grey’s Anatomy drama doesn’t end when the cameras stop rolling. Ever since Isaiah Washington’s alleged use of a homophobic slur led to his exit from the series, Shondavision fans have been treated to behind-the-scenes headlines almost as shocking as what’s happening on their screens. And, while fans might have been privy to some of the tension involving Patrick Dempsey ahead of his Season 11 departure, a new unauthorized book makes some pretty strong claims regarding “HR issues” with the actor that resulted in the decision to kill off Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd.

How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Grey’s Anatomy by Lynette Rice is an unauthorized account of the ABC series that claims to reveal new details of some of the medical drama’s most prominent character exits. THR was given an exclusive excerpt of the book, including the chapter involving Patrick Dempsey. The excerpt contains quotes from the cast and crew, including Dempsey himself. The bombshell takeaway regarding Dempsey's on-set behavior comes from executive producer James D. Parriott:

James D. Parriott served as an executive producer on Grey’s Anatomy for 49 total episodes. While initially leaving the show in 2006, he was brought back in 2015, reportedly to oversee Patrick Dempsey’s exit. Parriott’s comments and the excerpt as a whole don’t seem to be an attempt to demonize Dempsey — there are tons of compliments from his co-stars as well — but Jeannine Renshaw, an executive producer on 72 episodes from 2011-2014, similarly described some of the frustrations, particularly in regard to series star Ellen Pompeo.

Patrick Dempsey said he was in a tough situation, being grateful to have such a long-standing role with a universally adored character, but as an actor, he admitted he grew increasingly impatient with the filming schedule:

Once the decision was made for Patrick Dempsey to leave the ABC medical drama, James D. Parriott said they talked about three different scenarios for Derek Shepherd: he could stay in D.C., he could come back to Meredith in Seattle, or he could die. Stacy McKee, a producer on Grey’s Anatomy from Seasons 4-14, said there was only one option that seemed to work:

The Primetime Emmy Awards are just months away, meaning that nominations are coming out very soon. However, some are already speculating who could be nominated for the biggest awards in television, including the Best Drama Guest Actor category. The 2020-21 season was a big one for guest stars, and Grey’s Anatomy is submitting multiple actors for that category, including one Patrick Dempsey.

Patrick Dempsey made his memorable and surprise return to the ABC medical drama at the end of the Season 17 premiere, after Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) fell into a COVID-induced coma. The actor portrayed Dr. Derek Shepherd for the show’s first 11 seasons before his character ultimately died from a car crash. Now Dempsey is on the ballot for the guest actor category, along with T.R. Knight, who also made a surprise return in the latest season. According to Gold Derby, the last time an actor on Grey’s Anatomy was recognized in the category was in 2006.

Before starring as Coach Taylor in the Friday Night Lights cast, Kyle Chandler took on the role of Dylan Young in two episodes of Season 2 of Grey’s Anatomy. Dylan was a bomb squad member who died from a bomb that exploded once it was taken out of a patient’s body, before he had time to dispose of it. The role earned him his first Emmy nomination, but he lost to Christian Clemenson for Boston Legal.

The Grey’s Anatomy alum appeared throughout Season 17 of the medical drama during Meredith's beach fantasy, and while it made fans emotional to see MerDer together once again after so long, it’s not an official nomination as of yet. There are only five spots on the actual ballot this year, so it’s not a for sure thing that Dempsey will even be nominated. Fans will know soon, though, as nominations for the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards are set to be announced on July 13.

It will be interesting to see whether or not Patrick Dempsey is nominated for the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series, considering this would be his first nomination for Grey’s Anatomy and only his second Primetime Emmy nomination. The first, coincidentally, being for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series in 2000 for Once and Again. Since Derek’s long-awaited return made fans everywhere emotional and happy, yearning for more time with him, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Academy decided to nominate him.

If there is one thing that ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy is good at, it's heart-wrenching drama and the current season is certainly not failing to deliver. Season 17 of the medical drama has reflected our real-world troubles in that Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith came down with COVID and while unconscious, dreamed of her long-dead husband Derek, played by fan favorite Patrick Dempsey. Now that Meredith is on the road to recovery, Dempsey has taken his second exit from the show - but will it be his last?

McDreamy’s return after being killed off in Season 11 was, of course, well received by fans, as the character had been with the show from the very start and was a favorite. His return being popular, but short lived, Patrick Dempsey has weighed in on the possibility of another return for Derek during an interview with Variety. Although there is not one planned as of now, Dempsey admits that where Grey’s Anatomy is concerned, pretty much anything is possible. Here it is in the Enchanted actor’s own words:

Ain’t that the truth! Over the years, some unbelievable things have happened on Grey’s Anatomy, including deceased characters seemingly coming back. While this season’s return of McDreamy is one such example, one can’t help but be reminded of Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Denny Duquette. The ill-fated character would return regularly, in some form or another, far after his death. Although he died in Season 2, his last appearance was well into Season 5.

Much like how Meredith’s beach dreams of Derek stemmed from COVID, Denny’s post-death reappearance was the product of a loved one’s brain tumor. Even more similar, both tall dark and handsome men’s appearances ceased after the disease/virus was fixed in their partners. However, Denny did appear once to Meredith, who was not suffering from an illness. This may be evidence to support Patrick Dempsey returning again, even if for only an episode.

Certainly, weirder things have happened on Grey’s Anatomy, and it seems like Patrick Dempsey would be welcomed back with open arms. When the actor recently made his second exit from the show, it was apparently pretty emotional for the cast and crew. They got a taste of what it was like to have Dempsey back, and they may just want to relive that experience further on down the road.

So while there doesn’t seem to be any plans for McDreamy reentering the script for now, it doesn’t seem that anyone has ruled out another appearance from Patrick Dempsey if the show continues to run. Although Dempsey may be done for the season, Season 17 of Grey’s Anatomy is still going strong, and you can catch Episode 14 next Thursday, May 6 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC or even stream the season.

When Disney’s Enchanted hit theaters, it was an instant hit. The combination of classic animation and fairy tale satire was praised for its unconventional approach to the Disney formula. As with any hit film, rumors of a sequel soon began to circulate. They didn’t seem to amount to much - after all, Enchanted was originally released in 2007, almost fifteen years ago. However, Disney has since announced that the long-awaited sequel, entitled Disenchanted, is gearing up to begin production.

It hasn’t been an easy road. Many films get stuck in development hell, cycling through directors and writers until the project gets dropped due to lack of interest. The Enchanted sequel has been in the works since 2010 and was titled Disenchanted in 2016. Patrick Dempsey, who plays Robert Philip, the love interest to Amy Adams' Giselle, shed some light on the subject, telling Variety:

But it seems like the wait will be worth it. Not only are Patrick Dempsey and Amy Adams returning, composer Alan Menken excitedly confirmed that James Marsden and Idina Menzel will also reprise their roles as Prince Edward and Nancy, respectively. Dempsey shared that same kind of enthusiasm with the following:

ABC's Grey’s Anatomy has been throwing twists and turns at fans for nearly two decades, and this season is certainly no different, as it landed a doozy with a long time favorite character coming back from the dead, sort of. In the Season 17 premiere, Patrick Dempsey returned to his fan-favorite role as Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd, the dearly departed husband of Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith, who has spent the season suffering from COVID and drifting in and out of consciousness. Following his final-for-real appearance in the emotional installment "Good As Hell," Dempsey has addressed his character’s “beautiful” second exit from the long running show.

Patrick Dempsey understandably believes that his second exit from Grey's Anatomy is so beautiful because of how much fans have adored both his character Derek and the show’s central relationship between him and Meredith from the very beginning. In an interview with Variety, the actor talked about how his recurring return was a way to show viewers that those we love never truly leave us, in a year already so full of loss for people everywhere. Here it is in Dempsey's own words:

McDreamy’s multiple returns in Season 17 were, of course, quite well received by fans, but so was his exit. Grey's Anatomy's audience has always loved how emotional the show can get, especially when it's character-based, and that episode didn't hold back. That said, it sounds like fans weren’t the only ones moved by Derek's most recent farewell, though. In the same interview, Patrick Dempsey says that everyone on the set was brought to tears when filming for his final ep wrapped.

Patrick Dempsey shared that the whole idea behind him coming back to Grey's was to deliver some good vibes in a dark time, and also to help people understand just how serious out pandemic is, which is already a touchy and heart-wrenching subject already. And to their point, it's hard to think of a more direct way to do this than by having him return as Meredith’s COVID-induced hallucination, they do just that. In his words:

What Patrick Dempsey is describing is an experience that a lot of people are familiar with during this time. Families have been affected in major ways by the pandemic, with safety precautions constantly changing everyday lives. It's been a hard time for everyone, so if nothing else, Grey's Anatomy sending Dempsey’s McDreamy out for his second exit is just another reminder to hug your loved ones a little tighter when you can, with the idea that even though we may be separated from those we love, they're only as far away as a memory.
