Plenty of excellent TV shows have graced the small screen over the years, and quality titles have also debuted amid the 2025 TV schedule. Of course, there are many shows that some fans may not consider all that good, even if they do have an affinity for them. To that point, a recently posted subreddit asked fans to name some of their favorite “bad” TV series. Pretty Little Liars – the polarizing teen mystery series – came up a few times along with some Ryan Murphy-produced shows, and they were far from the only shows named.

We can chalk this subreddit up to a user by the name of Frosty-Muffin6997, who classified these particular shows as programs that audiences love despite poor writing, acting, critical reception and more. If I’m being completely honest, given their reputations, I’m not too surprised that PLL and some Murphy-headed productions made their way into this roster. Also included here are a couple of other young adult drama series, a procedural or two and a superhero series that aired on Fox years ago. Take a look:

• Pretty Little Liars is every type of bad show there is. It’s good, it’s fun, it’s bad, it’s boring, and it’s unwatchable. Luckily, it’s the first two until like season 5 and a half. - Locke108

It seems fans have some strong feelings about the shows they enjoy and, of course, each is entitled to their opinion. For years, many have criticized PLL for getting too twisty and superfluous as time went on and, like the aforementioned Riverdale, someone could argue that the show ran too long. Nevertheless, the ABC Family show does still have its share of admirers, and many still keep tabs on the Pretty Little Liars cast.

On the other hand, while Ryan Murphy has received his share of acclaim for many of his shows, many of them have also received criticism. This thread alone also features comments from fans talking about the shortcomings of Glee, Nip/Tuck and 9-1-1 (a first responder show that just sent some characters to space).

And, of course, there’s the recently released All’s Fair, which has been trashed by critics. However, Hulu subscription holders have seemingly been tuning in, given the show was just renewed for a second season. Speaking of shows that are still airing, there's more to say on that front.

Fans Talk About Shows That Are Still On The Air

What’s interesting to see here is how the amount of comments on classic shows compares to the number of messages regarding series that are currently airing. In terms of the latter category, The Rookie, All’s Fair and Taylor Sheridan’s shows were far from the only ones to be called out. Check out a few more responses regarding shows that are still on the air:

Reacher, Tracker and The Hunting Wives have avid fanbases, and I’m curious as to whether some might take offense to the critiques listed above. But, then again, those comments are coming from those who admit to enjoying the shows and are just offering their honest appraisals. On the whole, I really appreciate the candiness from these fans, as I myself can admit to enjoying some TV shows that aren’t exactly critical darlings. So let’s let fans enjoy Pretty Little Liars, Ryan Murphy shows and anything else without judgement.

We’d love to believe TV shows are perfect creations with choices made purely for creative reasons, and not scheduling, finances, ratings, studio exec whims, etc. However, that isn’t the case in an industry where the bottom line is the top dog, and so television history’s annals are riddled with fractured storylines, forgotten characters (like Chuck Cunningham) and completely ignored histories. Some of the biggest shows of their respective eras, like Friends and Yellowstone, are just as guilty as those with less pristine productions.

It’s a wide-ranging topic that TV audiences love to get into nitty-gritty discussions about, with yours truly in that group for sure, and one Redditor sparked a ton of conversations with a recent post asking for others’ thoughts on shows with unresolved plots. A ton of different shows were namechecked, going far beyond the usual suspects like Lost, that holiest grail of “Did that mean anything to the plot?” inquiries. (Even though some can argue that Lost’s story gaps don’t matter.) So let’s dig into some of the gripes that fans laid out.

To kick things off, quite a few commenters were quick to point to Taylor Sheridan's rather hectic writing habits as a frequent offender of introduced-and-forgotten ideas on and around the Montana ranch in Yellowstone. I'll no doubt carry the third one listed below to my grave.

Yellowstone's Forgotten Plots

• In the first few episodes of Yellowstone, Kayce is having trouble adjusting to civilian life and calls his old commander and says he wants back in. The CO says "Pack a bag, im sending a chopper". Kayce says "i never unpacked" No helicopter ever arrives, no mention is ever made again of Kayce rejoining the service. Hell, at the end Sheridan's super cowboy character is at the Yellowstone helping with the liquidation auction. Then Teeter asks him for a job, and he says "why do you want to leave this place?", she says "too many memories". Both of them apparently forgot they just finished liquidating the ranch. - @UnderwaterKarma
• Still waiting for the bomb on the airplane to blow up on Yellowstone. - @PhutukKusi
• The one that immediately springs to mind is the kid - the grandson - finding the dinosaur. - @BlackbirdsGarden
• Also, when John stops to help the lady change her tyre and they both get shot we never find out what happened to her son. Makes me think that boy was originally going to be Carter since he appears at the start of the next series - @OnafridayR

I mean honestly, those dinosaur bones could have (presumably) been used in SOME way to argue for the ranch to be seen as a historical site of value. And it's not like fake bones would have another TV show to shoot that would conflict with a resolution. The same goes for Kayce's military background, which didn't come up nearly as much as it seemed like it might earlier in the run.

Now let's shift our focus to some shows that introduced main characters' family members and then dropped the siblings from the face of the earth.

Missing Siblings

• In the first episode of Sherlock it is deduced that John Watson has an alcoholic brother named Sam all from the appearance of his phone. This sibling is then said to be a sister. They are never referenced again even at Johns wedding. Nor is this quirk of Sherlock getting something 95% right because Sherlock is the one to notice and admit he deduced poorly. - @HatOfFlavour
• Seinfeld mentions he has a sister in the Chinese Restaurant episode ... She's never mentioned again. - @RunDNA
• In Brooklyn Nine-Nine, it’s pointed out that Amy is the way she is because she has 7 brothers, and not only do we only meet one (Lin-Manuel Miranda by the way) but none of them even to come to her wedding! - @alehansolo21
• On New Girl, Jess having a sister out of nowhere, and then sister disappearing again right after she was introduced. - @nomnomsquirrel

So often, TV siblings are just vehicles to bring in guest stars, which has a lot to do with why we never see them again. That wasn't so much an issue for Friends' Joey, whose gaggle of sisters showed up several times in the show's run. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case for Phoebe's long-lost-then-found dad.

• Also, there's no mention of Phoebe's biological father after she meets him for the first time. The storyline of her search for her dad was so great, and was the main story for a number of episodes. Then she finally meets him, and it looks like the two might be able to slowly heal old wounds and form a relationship. Then he never came up again and it's like the whole storyline never happened. For me, that's the most frustrating one in Friends by far. - @Scarred-Face

This is definitely the kind of story issue that bothers me the most, when more than a single episode of plotting goes into tracking down a specific character, where conversations are had about the importance of it all, and then it just never comes up again.

Speaking of lengthy build-ups to fatherly reveals that go the way of the do-do:

Jon Snow's Lineage On Game Of Thrones

• Everyone talked up Jon being a Targaryen for fucking YEARS too before it officially happened on the show. It was going to have such massive consequences and either put a massive wedge between him and Dany for their claims to the Iron Throne… OR it would draw them closer together to give them an undoubted authority to claim the throne together. Then as soon as its confirmed… no one really mentions it as being important that he’s the son of Rhaegar Targaryen. In a setting where names mean eveything and are the most important factor in determining who should be sitting on the throne. - @dynesor

This was one of those book plot points that the HBO series could not stop fans from talking about and theorizing over during the earlier seasons. But then when it came time to finally make Jon Snow's ancestry live-action canon, the showrunners didn't go as far as they could have in drawing out possible ramifications.

While I would have little problem with singling out tons of other TV plots that never panned out, let's go through a quick selection of snipes targeting Pretty Little Liars, Blindspot, and more.

• Aria murders someone in the season 5 premiere and this incident is barely mentioned again. The whole show was so messy but the good outweighs the bad for me so I still have a lot of love for it- even if the night Allison disappeared is extremely convoluted - @athmeystic
• Blindspot. Jane Doe shows up covered with clue-based tattoos related to various future crimes and terror attacks. We eventually find out who tattooed her and why, but not where they got the foreknowledge for them to be cued by things like sports scores and other unpredictable events - @Fancy-Television-760
• Landry killing a guy on Friday Night Lights. Just swept it under the rug - @spokanetransplanted
• Just as a new one that nobody mentioned: Thawne/Wells was seen to be stealing genetic tissue or blood or some shit from captured supervillains in a pre-credits sequence in the first season of the Flash but this never came up again. - @ContinuumGuy

If only we all had the powers of The Flash (or even Reverse-Flash) to go back in time to convince all of these showrunners to wrap up their stories in better ways. Justice for Judy Winslow!

It may be hard to believe, but June marks 15 years since “A” first started terrorizing Aria, Hanna, Spencer, Emily, and later, Ali. Even though the teens pretty much ruined everything with their decisions, Pretty Little Liars remains one of the best teen dramas that is streaming. And it had a reboot on Max that lasted for two seasons before being unfortunately canceled. Now, the cast and creator have shared their thoughts on a reunion, and I am loving their ideas, but I'm specifically here for Troian Bellisario’s.

PLL ran for seven seasons on ABC Family/Freeform, spawning a short-lived spinoff during its run, Ravenswood. After PLL ended, it came back as another spinoff, Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, which was also short-lived. That show saw Sasha Pieterse and Janel Parrish reprising their roles as Alison DiLaurentis and Mona Vanderwaal, but it only left fans wanting more.

Now, Bellisario, who played Spencer Hastings, has shared a pretty great idea for bringing back the original characters for a project, telling The Hollywood Reporter why now is the perfect time for it to happen:

A film would definitely make more sense than a new season. It would give the cast the opportunity to continue to do other projects and not be tied down for another nine months or so. However, it would also give fans just enough time to see where all these characters are and what they’ve been doing since finally escaping A and A.D.’s clutches.

That being said, Bellisario is not the only one with ideas. Some of the Pretty Little Liars cast and its creator, I. Marlene King, spoke to THR in honor of PLL’s anniversary. King admitted they “always kick it around” when it comes to a potential reunion and have discussed doing a movie or 10 episodes.

Shay Mitchell, who portrayed Emily Fields, shared she thinks there could be something where they “all get back together and do something fun” like Sex and the City did with And Just Like That… I also think this would be a good way to see what the characters are up to in a new and different way.

Meanwhile, Ashley Benson has an idea for a storyline, suggesting that her character, Hanna Marin, could “finally be ‘A!’” You can’t have Pretty Little Liars without “A,” and having it be Hanna would be intriguing. Or perhaps Lucy Hale’s Aria could be the culprit since there was a time fans thought that was truly the case. Whatever happens, Tyler Blackburn, who played Caleb Rivers, wants it to be PG-13, pointing out that he thinks the show “could be really badass if it was not on a family network.” Having it be more intense would be pretty entertaining.

As a Day 1 PLL fan, I would love nothing more than to see the show come back, whether it be darker, lighter, a film or another season. For now, though, we’ll just have to settle for watching the original series with a Max subscription.

We know them, we love them, and most of the time, we love to hate them. Regardless of how any of us feel about the iconic, troublesome teens that round out the fabric of Hollywood’s youth-centric media, they’ve left their signature messy marks. This list covers the big hitters, the unmistakable part-of-pop-culture adolescents who derailed monumentally (dependent on their character and world, not all misguided minors are created equal). Each calling card of these chaotic characters has a few things in common–they’re lost and faced with conflict–but how they solve their issues leads to many more issues than solutions. Buckle up and grab your favorite nostalgic mix tape/playlist; we’re in for a bumpy ride.

Jim Stark and Buzz Gunderson - Rebel Without a Cause

This is by far one of the most influential movies that jumpstarted the teen genre and it’s big thanks to Jim Stark (James Dean) and Buzz Gunderson (Corey Allen). When gang leader Buzz and new-in-town Jim agree to a “chickie race,” that’s when things go up in smoke. Jim is left to face the fallout.

Marissa Cooper - The O.C.

You could probably make a case for most of The O.C. kids, but Marissa Cooper (Mischa Barton) undoubtedly tops them all. Coop’s undoing was a monolith and started on the wings of her parents' divorce. It led to underage drinking, tumultuous relationships, petty theft, and eventually to her passing away after a car crash at the end of Season 3.

Danny Zuko - Grease

Like many other ensembles, you could make a pick mostly anyone from the Grease cast, but Danny Zuko's (John Travolta) issues bled into everyone else’s. Not to mention, he strung Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) along until the very end of the movie.

Serena van der Woodsen - Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl is another show where you could argue a good case for any of the characters being the biggest saboteur. But like Marissa Cooper, Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) just can’t shake off trouble in most things she does. The thought of old her and Georgina Sparks together really sounds like they’d top the list together.

Veronica Sawyer - Heathers

Heathers and Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder) were ahead of the curve. When awkward loner Veronica gets invited to join the school’s most popular group, she quickly realizes it’s not the place for her. After befriending new kid Jason Dean (Christian Slater), they accidentally kill one of the Heathers. This sets off an entire killing spree that wreaks havoc on Westerburg High School.

Dawson Leery - Dawson’s Creek

Even though he may have been seen more as a golden boy during his reign, Dawson (James Van Der Beek) caused some major damage in his day. We literally have a separate list showcasing all the times Leery was the worst character for his loved ones to be around. If he'd only been supportive of Joey Potter (Katie Holmes) going to Paris, who knows what could've been?

Cady Heron - Mean Girls

Tina Fey’s wildly quotable Mean Girls needs no introduction or explanation. With Cady (Lindsay Lohan) coming to terms with attending a public high school in the US after growing up in Africa, she is a poster child for this list. As she explores her new reality, she gets lost for a moment amid girl world drama, which leads to multiple friend, family, and relationship troubles.

Rue Bennet - Euphoria

The Max ‘teen’ jewel-encrusted drama juggernaut holds another ensemble of lost and morose students. However, Rue Bennet (Zendaya) and her substance abuse issues are the focal point. It's upended friendships, caused familial stresses, multiple times over, causing Rue to lie, steal and hurt everyone in the East Highlanders.

Chris Hargensen - Carrie

Stephen King’s Carrie is another classic high school staple that helped push the envelope on what fictional teen worlds could hold. Popular girl and bully, Chris Hargensen (Nancy Allen) makes Carrie’s (Sissy Spacek) life a living nightmare. Hargensen continues down a downward spiral that leads to the bone-chilling but iconic prank that happens at the dance (which has some truly grim consequences).

Tim Riggins - Friday Night Lights

If you know anything about this NBC network TV classic, you either love or hate Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch). While he was a regular womanizer, heavy partier, not to mention that he sabotaged himself and the team with some regularity, he straightened up.

Dallas ‘Dally’ Winston - The Outsiders

Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of The Outsiders is a quintessential coming-of-age story. Even though the whole gang is rough and tumble, along with any of the ‘Socs,’ Dally (Matt Dillon) is the most troubled. With an already tumultuous background, Johnny’s death sends him on to make poor decisions for himself and his friends.

Cory Matthews - Boy Meets World

Surprising, I know. The more classic choice from Boy Meets World may be Shawn Hunter, but Cory Matthews (Ben Savage) sparked plenty of trouble in his time (like fellow do-gooder, Dawson Leery). Throughout the 7 seasons, he caused more rifts between his family, friends and Topanga than anyone else.

Billy Loomis & Stu Macher - Scream

Naturally, any teen in any scary movie generally has some baggage that leads to strife in one way or another. Youths like Billy (Skeet Ulrich) and Stu (Matthew Lillard) are different, though, they are intentionally motivated to terrify and harm their fellow classmates and the people of Woodsboro. Unfortunately for them, their plans backfire on them gravely.

Lucas Scott - One Tree Hill

Like the aforementioned teen network drama shows of the mid and late ‘00s, any character is up for debate. Lucas Scott (Chad Michael Murray), the main protagonist, puts on a good show of commotion for everyone in his life. Being a serial heartbreaker while being unloyal and manipulative to others lands him this particular title.

Jennifer Check - Jennifer’s Body

Jennifer’s Body, again, isn’t filled with average adolescents, and especially not Jennifer (Megan Fox). While she and longtime friend Needy (Amanda Seyfried) head out for a semi-average night of Jennifer-approved fun, all goes awry. We find out that Jennifer has turned into a demon feasting on the male teens of Devil’s Kettle, WY. After the friends face off, Needy gets pinned for the murders and gets taken to an insane asylum.

Rachel Berry - Glee

The destined-for-greatness Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) typically stopped at nothing to get what she wanted, regardless of the consequences. While the fictional NYADA darling had moments of hope and promise, her ego and ambition always seemed to cause more harm than good. (Any Ryan Murphy-created teen could do, though.)

Seth - Superbad

The 2007 classic was the first Seth Rogen-Evan Goldberg project, and it immediately put them on the map. The semi-biographical Superbad revolves around characters with the same names and pretty typical senior tropes. Of the fictional duo Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera), and their pal, Fogell (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), the first of the trio creates the most trouble for their celebratory evening. While the trio make up, along with the girls (Emma Stone, Martha MacIsaac), before graduation.

Rory Gilmore - Gilmore Girls

“Why did you drop out of Yale?” Even though Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel) is one of the more unusual fictional high schoolers on the list, her dropping out was monumental for the world of Gilmore Girls. Even Lauren Graham didn’t like the storyline because of the turmoil it created between Lorelai and Rory. Not to mention, her sleeping with Dean, missing Lorelai's graduation and later on, being more lost than ever in her 30s.

Donnie - Donnie Darko

Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) isn’t your typical troublesome, drama-filled teen, even though his choices in one reality lead to serious consequences. His present ED signifiers (Emotional Disturbance) present Donnie as something else, but we eventually come to realize he's an anti-hero of sorts. As he comes to realize that there are multiple timelines at play, he chooses to fix it to save Gretchen Ross' (Jena Malone) life. And with his developed powers, he returns to the day when it all went awry, which leads to his destiny--death.

Archie Andrews - Riverdale

Archie of The CW’s Riverdale was one of the many, much darker TV reboots out there. And though all the drama has always hinged on the red-headed football hero regardless of genre, the TV show really packs Archie with a punch. To be fair, he also found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time quite frequently–it’s how he reacted to them that gives him the top spot for the searching students of Riverdale High.

Kathryn Merteuil & Sebastian Valmont - Cruel Intentions

Another young and terrifying twosome is Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Philippe). The oddball step-siblings wager a bet that involves innocent and new Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon). Through the scheme, the group of students is faced with continuing drama until a very sad end.

Valerie Malone - Beverly Hills, 90210

Though there was plenty of actual drama on the set of Beverly Hills, 90210, Valerie Malone (Tiffani Thiessen) wasted no time sowing seeds of chaos. Arriving in Season 5 with a lot of baggage in the form of family trauma, Malone was immediately set up to be in trouble. She dated many of the guys and regularly feuded with the girls.

Max Fischer - Rushmore

As one of the many stylized Wes Anderson films, Rushmore was one of his earliest. Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman) is a love-drunk student determined to date his teacher and will stop at nothing to achieve it. After an array of mishaps and his fellow acquaintance, Blume (Bill Murray), hitting it off with her, Max loses it. He leaked the affair publicly and temporarily burned bridges with both of them.

Willow Rosenberg - Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Willow’s (Alyson Hannigan) rise to raising hell for Buffy and co. may be a slow burn, but once she hits it, things get wild. While her use of telepathy, manipulation and struggling to keep her magic in check kick off the season, Tara’s death sets Willow into overdrive in trying to destroy the world.

PJ & Josie - Bottoms

Gen Z coming-of-age comedies come in all shapes and sizes, including Emma Seligman’s Bottoms. The satirical take on the high school experience is wild, especially with PJ (Rachel Sennott) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri). The BFF’s hatch a fight club for girls so they can talk to cheerleaders they have crushes on. Needless to say, a lot of drama goes down, including a car blowing up.

Mona Vanderwaal - Pretty Little Liars

Honestly, most characters from the 2010 series have a fair shot here. But Mona (Janel Parrish) is the reason for all of the mystery and torment. She is who sparks the series because of her grudge against the main friend group. Eventually, she becomes one of them, and even more trouble ensues.

Laura Palmer - Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me

In my opinion, there’s no list about misguided high schoolers complete without Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee). The character was cemented into pop culture in David Lynch’s cult show, Twin Peaks, but the less popular prequel movie shows her tragic undoing. Her last days are filled with traumas relating to her drug addiction, web of lies and darker spirits. Warning, this movie isn't for the faint of heart.

DeGrassi: The Next Generation

DeGrassi: The Next Generation is maybe the only title on the list in which each character is as chaotic and troubled as the last. The iconic Canadian teen soap has multiple iterations, but the 2002-2015 series takes the cake. Between the students, they have every classic dramatic HS storyline in the book, and alumni Drake’s “I’m Upset” reunion-filled music video summarizes some key points.

Nancy Downs - The Craft

The quartet of girls in The Craft start as lost as the next, but Nancy’s (Fairuza Balk) power-hungry ways destroy what they have together. After quiet Sarah Bailey (Robin Tunney) moves to town and gets wronged, Downs and her pals take her in. All four hatch a scheme to cast a spell on the wrongdoer, and when it succeeds, that’s when Nancy starts sabotaging everything.

John B - Outer Banks

Netflix’s Outer Banks is one wild ride with wayward John B (Chase Stokes) at the helm. Sure, other characters may be outwardly more troubled (JJ, Sarah or Rafe), but everyone’s lives intensified because of John B’s initial treasure hunt.

Christine ‘Lady Bird’ McPherson - Lady Bird

As one of the more subtle teenage pot stirrers, Ladybird (Saoirse Ronan) still makes her presence and opinions unmistakably clear. Her main sources of conflict reside within her relationship with her hardworking mom (Laurie Metcalf) and nerdy best friend (Beanie Feldstein). While Lady Bird temporarily burns bridges with both in pursuit of greater life expectations and new friends, she mends things with both.

Effy Stonem - Skins UK

A cult classic that ran from 2007-2013 and largely featured the rebellious but lost Effy Stonem (Kaya Scodelario). From the jump, we see 14-year-old her sneaking home in the early morning after being out all night at a rave. Needless to say, Effy’s journey was a bumpy one filled with substance abuse, mental health crises, and a web of lies.

It may be hard to believe, but Pretty Little Liars premiered nearly 15 years ago on ABC Family, which has since been rebranded as Freeform. It's also been almost eight since A’s reign of terror finally ended, as the show wrapped its seven-season run in 2017. While the PLL cast has been quite busy since then, it’s cool when any of the actors reminisce about their time on the drama. With that, Holly Marie Combs just reflected on the series, specifically how the young stars compared to the Charmed cast.

After portraying middle Halliwell sister Piper in the WB's late ‘90s/early ‘00s supernatural drama, Combs landed the role of Ella Montgomery on Pretty Little Liars a mere four years later. Combs revealed discussed PPL during a ‘90s Con panel and explained what it was like seeing a new group of young actresses leading a show Combs (via People) also paid her younger co-stars a major compliment:

Considering the “Liars” actress were around the same age Combs was when she was on Charmed, it may have surreal for her to watch them work across those seven seasons. It’s no secret that there was drama on the set of Charmed. However, negative chatter didn't seem to swirl around the stars of PLL, and they still appear to be close. I really appreciate how Combs -- who played Ella Montgomery on the ABC Family show -- could be so honest about her and her co-stars' maturity levels during the early aughts.

It goes without saying that there are definitely some casts that work together better than others. When it comes to the cast of PPL, they seemed to have great chemistry on-screen, which is party why I say it remains one of the best teen drama series to stream. Of course, I don't want to take anything away from the stars of Charmed, as they're iconic in their own right.

Holly Marie Combs is also still very protective of Charmed. When The CW reboot was announced, she actually some salty words about the new show, as she was not pleased that the show was getting revamped. That aside, over the years, she's frequently reunited with her former co-stars at conventions, and she has a podcast with her on-screen husband Brian Krause and their on-screen son, Drew Fuller. The late Shannen Doherty was also part of the podcast until her death in 2024.

Despite how different Charmed and Pretty Little Liars were, it seems like Holly Marie Combs can draw positive elements from both working experiences. The actress certainly has a unique perspective in that she played a role in what are arguably two of the most iconic young adult series of all time. Needless to say, she and her various co-stars deserve their flowers, in spite of any issues that might have occurred.

Around the time when Twilight was all the rage, fans of supernatural coming-of-age romance stories found a small screen answer to that worldwide phenomenon in The Vampire Diaries. Developed by Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson from a series of novels by L.J. Smith, the show follows teenage Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), who finds herself in a love triangle with brothers Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder), who also happen to be immortal creatures of the night.

One of the best horror TV shows on Max, the series lasted eight seasons on The CW and spawned two spin-offs (The Originals and Legacies) but we imagine that, if you are a fan, you have probably seen those shows already. If you are looking to expand your purview with some fresh blood, perhaps these other TV shows like The Vampire Diaries might quench your thirst.

A Discovery Of Witches (2018-2022)

A woman (played by Teresa Palmer) who comes from a family with witchcraft in its history falls for a charismatic Englishman (played by Matthew Goode), who turns out to be a natural enemy of her kind.

Why it is a great show to watch if you are a fan of The Vampire Diaries: Another TV adaptation of a book series (Deborah Harkness’ All Souls trilogy) involving a complicated romance between a vampire and a woman (a witch, in this case) is the U.K.-based A Discovery of Witches, which is also available with a Shudder subscription.

First Kill (2022)

Teenagers Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Calliope (Imani Lewis) are immediately drawn to each other, only to discover they are natural enemies.

Why it is a great show to watch if you are a fan of The Vampire Diaries: V.E. Schwab adapts her own short story, First Kill, into this short-lived Netflix original series which is another coming-of-age story about a complicated romance between a vampire and a young woman, who is a vampire hunter in this case.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1997-2003)

Teenage Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) discovers that she is destined to defend the earth from all forms of otherworldly evil, with the help of friends and her school's librarian.

Why it is a great show to watch if you are a fan of The Vampire Diaries: The ultimate coming-of-age series about a young woman who has shared a romance with a bloodsucker (when she was not hunting one) is one of the best horror TV shows on Hulu, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which also one of The CW's biggest supernatural hits when it was still called The WB.

Roswell (1999-2002)

In a New Mexico town famous for being the site of a fabled UFO crash, three teens struggle to hide the fact that they are not from around here.

Why it is a great show to watch if you are a fan of The Vampire Diaries: Another romantic and bizarre coming-of-age WB hit is Roswell, in which Shiri Appleby stars as a young woman named Liz, who falls for a man who is not quite human (in this case an alien-human hybrid named Max, played by Jason Behr).

Supernatural (2005-2020)

Following in the footsteps of their parents, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) search for things that go bump in the night so they can bump back.

Why it is a great show to watch if you are a fan of The Vampire Diaries: Creator Eric Kripke's mega-popular supernatural WB/CW hit is not particularly romantic but the alliances that Sam and Dean form with otherworldly beings in the Supernatural cast (especially Misha Collins' Castiel) are quite endearing.

Being Human (2011-2014)

A vampire (played by Sam Witwer), a werewolf (played by Sam Huntington), and a ghost (played by Meaghan Rath) try to blend in while sharing an apartment together. 

Why it is a great show to watch if you are a fan of The Vampire Diaries: In addition to its absorbing romantic plot points, Syfy's North American version of the British supernatural dramedy Being Human is also a great match to The Vampire Diaries for how it explores the struggles that come with being a creature of the night in the modern world.

Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina (2018-2020) 

Kiernan Shipka stars as an enchanted teen whose bid to share a normal life with her mortal friends is constantly interrupted by strange circumstances plaguing her town.

Why it is a great show to watch if you are a fan of The Vampire Diaries: Netflix's Chiling Adventures of Sabrina — a far darker interpretation of the popular Archie Comics character than the Melissa Joan Hart-led sitcom — is another coming-of-age drama about struggling to balance one's commitment to their human side with their supernatural side.

V-Wars (2019)

Melted ice caused by climate change suddenly unleashes an ancient virus that begins transforming the infected into blood-thirsty, nocturnal savages.

Why it is a great show to watch if you are a fan of The Vampire Diaries: Just a few years after saying goodbye to the Vampire Diaries cast, Ian Somerhalder returned to that world but in a human role on a series that explored the ugly side of vampirism called V-Wars, which only lasted one season on Netflix.

The Summer I Turned Pretty (2022-Present)

After turning 16, Belly (Lola Tung) suddenly attracts newfound attention from childhood friends, and brothers, Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) while spending the summer together.

Why it is a great show to watch if you are a fan of The Vampire Diaries: Not every show has to be supernatural to appeal to The Vampire Diaries fans, such as the coming-of-age Amazon Prime original TV show, The Summer I Turned Pretty, which also involves a captivating love triangle plot.

Pretty Little Liars (2010-2017)

Following the disappearance of their friend, four young women fall prey to a mysterious enemy who threatens to reveal their most damning innermost secrets.

Why it is a great show to watch if you are a fan of The Vampire Diaries: While also not a supernatural drama (despite spawning a short-lived supernatural spin-off called Ravenswood), Pretty Little Liars is chock-full of the same kind of high-stakes teen drama that makes The Vampire Diaries relatable and absorbing.

It feels like we were waiting for years for the long-awaited book adaptation of A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, and thankfully, 2024 was the year it was delivered to us, first on the BBC in the United Kingdom and then on Netflix here in the United States. But, there are only a few episodes, with no plans for Season 2 so far, and I'm sure you're trying to find a new show to scratch that mystery-solving itch. 

Well, look no further, as we have a list of the ten best shows like A Good Girl's Guide to Murder that will also have you putting on your mystery-solving cap. Let's get into it. 

One Of Us Is Lying (2021 - 2022)

Based on the novel of the same name by Karen M. McManus, One Of Us Is Lying is a Peacock original that follows five high school students who are in detention together, but one of them dies during it. Then, the four of them find themselves in the middle of a long investigation where anything can happen. 

With two seasons, I actually think One Of Us Is Lying is the best show to watch if you really want something like A Good Girl's Guide to Murder. It's dramatic, has good tension, a great story, and features teenagers trying to figure out a murder, so it's everything you could want.

Cruel Summer (2021 - 2023)

If you're looking for a mystery that'll take you back in time, then Cruel Summer is the one for you. Taking place in the 1990s, this is a teen drama/mystery anthology that follows two different stories – the disappearance of a girl and how another seems to take her place in Season 1, and the development of a friendship that changes lives forever in Season 2.

Honestly, I'll never forgive Hulu for cancelling this show after two seasons because the premise itself is fascinating, and the mysteries are entertaining to follow. You'll find something new to love about both seasons, and you'll be on my side by the time you finish watching all 20 episodes and are craving more.

Nancy Drew (2019 - 2023)

Of course, I had to put Nancy Drew on here. The CW series, based on the mystery novels of the same name, is a drama that follows a teenage detective as she investigates mystery after mystery, throwing herself into danger, conspiracy, and more. 

I'm pretty sure I would have gotten flack if, for some reason, I didn't place Nancy Drew here. I will say I don't think the mysteries in this show are quite as tight as in Good Girl's Guide, but they are super enjoyable, and you'll fly through those four seasons.

Pretty Little Liars (2010 - 2017)

Duh. Pretty Little Liars was one of the biggest shows ever when it came out on Freeform. It follows a group of friends over the course of several years who receive threats from an anonymous person known as "A," who holds secrets over their heads. And, it's up to them to figure out who's threatening them. 

Based on the novels of the same name, Pretty Little Liars was a phenomenon across television in my younger years and well into my first year of college. Everyone talked about this show for all seven seasons, even if the story ended up being weird towards the end. Regardless, it's a good mystery and one you should check out. We had people theorizing for hours about who A.D.'s identity was.

Riverdale (2017 – 2023)

Okay, hear me out on this one. Riverdale was one of the best CW shows for a time and is based on Archie comics, following a group of teenagers living in the titular town and their experiences with not only high school and romance but death and many mysteries. 

Specifically, the first two seasons of this show are great. Riverdale is a series that got weirder and weirder as time went on, and the plot was lost. However, the first two seasons were solid mysteries and fun to watch. After those, it may be best to move over to another mystery series from this list.

Wednesday (2022 – Present)

Of course, you've heard of Wednesday. It would be shocking if you hadn't. The Netflix series, based on the Addams Family characters, follows the daughter, Wednesday, as she attends Nevermore Academy and makes it her mission to solve a murder mystery there while also dealing with all the woeful drama that comes with being a teenager at a supernatural school. 

Wednesday was monumental for many reasons. The Wednesday cast is talented, the story was intriguing, and, of course, we can't forget about all the viral moments that were everywhere when this show came out. We are all waiting anxiously for Wednesday Season 2, so check out the first season.

The Afterparty (2022 – 2023)

A comedy murder mystery, The Afterparty is one of Apple TV+'s best shows. It follows a different story each season, one at a high school reunion and one at a wedding, where each episode focuses on a different person's perspective in order to figure out who the killer is.

This is another case where this show could have run for years if it got more publicity because it's so funny. The cast makes the murder mysteries all the better, but you'll still be intrigued enough that you'll be wanting to solve the mysteries yourself from your couch.

School Spirits (2023 – Present)

Starring Peyton List, School Spirits is a supernatural teen drama that follows a teenager who doesn't believe she is dead but eventually decides to investigate her own disappearance as she's stuck in the afterlife – specifically, high school in the afterlife. 

This series has everything you're looking for – mystery, murder, secrets, lies, supernaturalness, and more. It's been renewed for a second season, so you might as well check out the first.

Veronica Mars (2004 – 2019)

Starring Kristen Bell, Veronica Mars is a teen noir mystery drama that tells the story of new mysteries each season, each time through the perspective of teen detective (later adult detective) Veronica Mars. 

The series had an incredibly dedicated fanbase during its time on air, and though it only ran for three seasons initially, it was brought back for a film in 2014 and then had a fourth season in 2019, where Bell came back to reprise the role again for eight episodes.

Yellowjackets (2021 – Present)

Last but not least, we have to talk about Yellowjackets, one of the best Showtime shows out there. The series bounces back and forth between two timelines: the 1990s, when a high school soccer team crash-lands in the mountains of Canada and has to do whatever it takes to survive, and the present day, where the women on that trip are grown up and dealing with the repercussions of said crash years later. 

What I love about Yellowjackets is that even now, two seasons in, there are still so many mysteries left to solve. It feels like when one is solved, another is waiting right around the corner, which is what makes this show so good. Yellowjackets Season 3 is confirmed, so you should check out the first two.

Now, this just makes me want to find my detective cap and go on my own murder mystery adventure. Where's my magnifying glass? 

The massive influx of content entering and leaving all the best streaming services has come and gone with the beginning of the month, but the first full week of May has plenty of additional content on various platforms that you’re not going to want to miss. 

Netflix subscribers get the comedy. Max subscribers get the drama. Disney+ subscribers get the music and also the wibbly wobbly, timey wimey…stuff. Here’s a look at what’s hitting streamers this week that you may want to give special attention to. 

Netflix This Week: Will Forte And Kevin Hart

Netflix is a Joke is a live comedy festival that is taking place in Los Angeles this week, and so comedy is a major focus this week on Netflix itself. It's not just stand up specials as a new comedy series and special comedy award make up this week's best on Netflix.

Bodkin- May 9

Bodkin is a new dark comedy that stars Will Forte and Siobhán Cullen true crime podcasters who travel to Ireland to investigate and record shows about the disappearance of people years before. Unfortunately, their investigation turns the small town upside down. 

Mark Twain Prize Award: Kevin Hart - May 11

For 25 years The Kennedy Center has given out the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Previous recipients include Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Bill Murray, and Jon Stewart. This year Kevin Hart is being given the award, and the event will be broadcast live on Netflix.

Disney+ This Week: The Beatles And Doctor Who

Disney+ has become a significant streaming service for fans of music, and this week, rather than bringing fans something new, Beatles fans are getting a piece of history that has never been streaming before. Oh, and also there’s new Who.

Let it Be - May 8

Disney+ previously debuted Peter Jackson’s excellent Get Back documentary that gave a new look at the production of the iconic Let It Be album. Now, Jackson has applied the same technological updates to the audio and video of Let It Be the original 1970 documentary. It has never been available streaming before and should make for an interesting companion to Get Back.

Doctor Who - May 10

Disney+ scored a major win in the streaming content wars when it became the exclusive home in the U.S. to new episodes of Doctor Who. The show is as popular in America now as it has ever been, and with Ncuti Gatwa recently taking on the iconic role, a lot of fans, old and new, will be interested to see where this new season takes The Doctor.

Max This Week: Pretty Little Liars And The Iron Claw

If you love a good summer drama, Max has you covered with the newest season of the still-popular Pretty Little Liars franchise, as well as the latest addition to the Max A24 library, a movie you might have missed in theaters, but won’t want to miss streaming.

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School - May 9

Two years ago Max debuted Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, the latest in the ongoing teen drama franchise. Now the follow up season, known as Pretty Little Liars: Summer School is finally here for fans still waiting to learn what will happen next.

The Iron Claw - May 10

Professional wrestling may not be seen as the highest art form, but it is clearly full of drama as The Iron Claw proved to many last year. While the movie was largely overlooked by awards season the story of the Von Erich family touched the audience that saw it, and now the movie comes to Max for those that missed it in theaters or those that need to see it again. 

Peacock This Week:

Thanks to shows like The Traitors reality TV has been a successful avenue for Peacock to differentiate itself. While this week’s new reality competition is a bit different it may still appeal to fans looking for a new fix. 

Love Undercover, Season 1 - May 9

If you’re going to make a reality dating show, you need a solid hook, and Peacock’s Love Undercover certainly has an interesting one. The show sees five professional soccer stars try to find love. The catch is that they’re looking for love with American women who have no idea who they really are, as they will be pretending to be ordinary people. 

Prime Video This Week: Daniel Tosh Hosts New Reality Competition

Prime Video has found its most recent success thanks to scripted series and films thanks to the likes of Fallout and Road House. Now it looks for fresh success in the Reality TV space. 

The GOAT - May 8

Reality TV often trades on the idea that it focuses on “regular people” and yet, the genre has turned some of those people into celebrities that rival TV and movie stars. Prime Video’s The GOAT asks the question "Just who is the greatest reality star of all time?" and also the question "Does anybody actually care?"  by pitting 14 of them against each other in a variety of challenges. The show is hosted by comedian Danial Tosh.

Apple TV+ This Week: Joel Edgerton And Jennifer Connelly

Science fiction fans who also have an Apple TV+ subscription have been in good shape, as the platform has had some great series of late, and that trend will hopefully continue with this week’s new series. 

Dark Matter - May 8

Based on the novel of the same name, Dark Matter stars Joel Edgerton as a man who wakes up one day to discover the life he had is gone, and it’s been replaced by something new, including his wife Jennifer Connelly being replaced by Alice Kreig. 

While all these series and movies are worth at least giving a look, they are only the beginning of what’s coming to streaming this week. Some kick-butt lesbian couples have genuinely won our hearts in both movies and TV – and today, we’re going to honor them. 

We truly live in a time when some great projects have awesome representation for the LGBTQ+ community. Whether it’s the best LGBTQ+ TV shows or the best LGBTQ+ movies, there are so many options out there that have really shown love in all its forms and made television and film that much better. 

Today, we’ll be discussing ten lesbian couples from movies and TV who honestly deserve all the praise in honor of Lesbian Visibility Day. While some of these couples have bisexuals as well (women who also like men), these pairings are all girl-on-girl and actually show what love is like. 

Santana And Brittany (Glee)

I’ll be honest and say that for my generation, Glee was everything, and Santana and Brittany were the couple on TV at the time. While both girls take up spots on the best Glee covers of all time, there’s nothing better than this relationship. 

Brittany is bisexual, but in the end, she winds up marrying her best friend. Through six seasons, we see the rise and fall and rise again of these two, where no matter what, their love keeps growing stronger day by day. As a young woman, I remember seeing these two on Glee and thinking, “Huh…so it is okay to like another woman.” They truly changed me. 

Carol And Therese (Carol)

While there are plenty of great LGBTQ+ movies out there, I think Carol is one of the best, and you should certainly check it out. The film tells the story of two women who fall for each other during the 1950s, leading to an affair. 

The film, one of Cate Blanchett’s best movies, tells the story of Carol and Therese, two women who grow to love each other. Honestly, it’s one of those love tales that is pretty realistic, to the point where it truly makes you feel bad for the characters who live during the 1950s when people were not as accepting. 

Clarke And Lexa (The 100)

I loved watching The 100. Despite the ending, I still think it’s one of the best CW shows. It’s a very creative idea—one hundred delinquents sent down from a space station to reconquer the Earth after a nuclear war. That premise alone will probably make many want to watch. 

Through its seven seasons, there were so many couples to follow, but arguably, the most known was Clarke and Lexa – or known as Clexa, a classic enemies-to-lovers relationship. Lexa was a leader on the ground, and Clarke was a leader of the delinquents, and while their love story didn't last as long as it should have, it was totally iconic. 

Korra And Asami (The Legend Of Korra)

As someone who loves both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra (even if I think the former is superior), Korra and Asami were both a surprise and a delight to watch. The ending informed the audience that both of them, two women, were together now. And then, the comics further confirmed it. 

They are both bisexual (as they both dated Mako from their friend group) but ultimately end up staying together. 

Remember, this was a massive deal for Nickelodeon at the time. We had never been given direct confirmation from any show before about anyone being a part of the LGBTQ+ community, so this was a huge stepping stone for the ATLA franchise and children’s TV as a whole. 

ATLA is known for its open conversations about sexuality and gender amidst a kick-butt storyline, and I, for one, will always be a fan. 

Marianne And Héloïse (Portrait Of A Lady On Fire)

If you’re looking for a more historical movie, check out the lead couple of Portrait of a Lady on Fire. The film is about a painter commissioned to paint the portrait of a young aristocrat and how they fall in love. 

I love Marianne and Héloïse’s relationship. It evolves slowly and realistically, especially for the period they were living in. Be warned that this movie does not have your typical happy ending, but for those who want a compelling and complex lesbian relationship, this is the one to watch.

Emily And Alison (Pretty Little Liars)

There are plenty of mystery thrillers out there, and Pretty Little Liars is probably one of the most well-known. The show follows how a clique falls apart when its leader suddenly vanishes. 

Emily and Alison are the perfect examples of what I would like to call a slowburn romance. Like, incredible slowburn. It was clear from the beginning that Emily always had a crush on Alison, but these two did not get together for many, many episodes. And even then, their relationship was ironically one of the most realistic out of all of these because life just happens, and they got through their own journeys. You have to love it. 

Callie And Arizona (Grey’s Anatomy)

Grey’s Anatomy is one of those shows that I’m quite sure will never end. During its two decades on the air, the series has seen several relationships come and go. One of those is Callie and Arizona. 

In another case where one is bisexual, and the other is lesbian, these two doctors got together earlier on in the series. They had one of the most extended relationships out of everyone. Their love story is authentic and raw and, of course, has drama out the the wazoo (as is tradition with Grey’s), but the LGBTQ+ community loved them with a passion. 

Maggie And Alex (Supergirl)

Supergirl is one of those shows that became a hit based on its use of DC Comics material. It has a great story about Superman’s cousin and her powers. But Supergirl’s sister, Alex Danvers, is actually the star of this section, as is her relationship with Maggie, a homicide detective. 

These two have probably one of the most relatable lesbian relationships. They become friends first. Maggie helps Alex come to terms with her sexuality and come out as well, and eventually, that leads to them getting together. They help each other grow throughout their time together. 

Tara And Willow (Buffy The Vampire Slayer)

Another legendary lesbian relationship we have to discuss is Tara and Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The show about a teenage vampire slayer took the world by storm, and this relationship was another huge step forward for proper representation in the media for lesbians. 

While at first, Tara’s introduction to the series was surprising for fans, as they had never seen Willow as a lesbian, their relationship slowly became a massive part of the series. Furthermore, when it ultimately tragically came to an end, fans sent protests to the creators. They were everything to so many people. 

Megan And Graham (But I’m A Cheerleader)

Last, we have Megan and Graham from But I’m a Cheerleader. This film is certainly one to watch if you love Natasha Lyonne because it’s the perfect coming-of-age teen comedy for young lesbians. 

The film is about a young cheerleader who is sent to a conversation therapy camp, and there, through her relationship, she learns that she likes who she is and embraces her sexuality. The portrayal of Megan and Graham, from Lyonne and Clea DuVall, is legendary in many ways and is a must-watch for those who want a hilarious but realistic lesbian couple. 

There are so many great options here to check out – and honestly, this makes me want to rewatch all these films and TV shows. I think it’s time for a marathon.

Considered by many to be one of the best TV shows on Netflix and, most definitely, one of its most popular in recent memory is Outer Banks. Created by Shannon Burke with Jonas and Josh Pate, the series — which first premiered in 2020 — follows a young man (Chase Stokes) who discovers that his father’s disappearance is connected to a lost treasure that he and his friends set out to find, which soon brings him face-to-face with death multiple times as a result.

However, the Outer Banks cast is not the only group of teens that you can find on the small screen who live dangerously… or, at least, have a lot of problems that seem to get worse with each season. As fans await the upcoming fourth season’s currently unannounced premiere date on the 2024 TV schedule, let’s dig up some similar favorites that you can bide your time with.

Surviving Summer (2022-Present)

An expelled Manhattan teen (played by Sky Katz) is sent to the land down under where she makes herself at home in a small town where surfing is treated like a way of life.

Why it is one of the best shows like Outer Banks: The similarities between OBX and Surviving Summer do not just stop at the title — considering how John B. and company genuinely struggling to make it through the season alive — since this coming-of-age Australian import (also featuring Talk to Me cast member Chris Alosio) also boasts some stellar scenes of characters surfing the waves.

Blood & Water (2020-Present)

A young woman (played by Ama Qamata) enrolls into a prestigious school where she begins to uncover shocking secrets about her own family history.

Why it is one of the best shows like Outer Banks: Yet another Netflix exclusive, international teen drama where the title reflects some of OBX’s own plot details, South Africa’s Blood & Water is also a compelling mystery thriller that will have viewers of all ages hooked.

On My Block (2018-2021) 

A group of bright teens and close friends try to keep each other out of trouble while living in South Central Los Angeles.

Why it is one of the best shows like Outer Banks: Before the action gets going, OBX is, essentially, the story of a young quartet dealing with romantic troubles, family issues, and their own hometowns economic hardships — much like the great Latinx TV show, On My Block, which later spawned a spin-off called Freeridge in 2023.

Panic (2021)

A high school senior (played by Fear Street cast member Olivia Scott Welch) and other hopeful graduates participate in a mysterious annual tournament consisting of high stakes challenges for a life-changing reward.

Why it is one of the best shows like Outer Banks: Created by Lauren Oliver (who also wrote the original novel), the Amazon Prime original miniseries Panic, like OBX, focuses on teens whose aspirations to leave their hometown end up putting them in harm’s way, but with a twist similar to The Hunger Games movies without the dystopian setting.

The Wilds (2020-2022)

When their plane crashes on a deserted island, a group of teenage girls must learn how to survive the harsh terrain and each other.

Why it is one of the best shows like Outer Banks: The teens from OBX may be fed up with their hometown, but at least they are not quite as desperate to leave the island like the young ladies on the Amazon Prime original, The Wilds — a TV show that was cancelled before reaching a proper ending, but is worth giving a try for the thrill.

The Society (2019)

A teenager girl (played by Kathryn Newton in one of her best roles) and other youths discover that all of their adult peers have suddenly vanished from their small town, which they are also mysteriously unable to leave from.

Why it is one of the best shows like Outer Banks: If the teens from OBX actually found themselves physically and inexplicably unable to leave their hometown (and they did not live near water) their situation might resemble the plot of Netflix’s The Society — another prematurely cancelled coming-of-age drama, but with a sci-fi twist, and one of Natasha Liu Bordizzo’s best TV shows, too.

Riverdale (2017-2023)

The increasingly unsettling adventures of Archie (K.J. Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart), Jughead (Cole Sprouse), Veronica (Camila Mendes), and others in a small American town plagued by shady individuals and haunting secrets.

Why it is one of the best shows like Outer Banks: While the setting of The CW’s dark adaptation of the Archie comics is not as idyllic and some plot points border on the supernatural, the situations that the Riverdale cast members finds themselves in — ranging from murder mysteries to love triangles — are not too different from what the OBX crew often face.

Dawson's Creek (1998-2003)

A young aspiring filmmaker (played by James van der Beek) and his friends find themselves at odds with life and with each other as they approach adulthood.

Why it is one of the best shows like Outer Banks: When first promoting Outer Banks, Netflix literally referred to it as “Dawson’s Creek meets The Goonies,” which is a concept that might go over their target audience’s heads, but is just another reason for them to check out creator Kevin Williamson’s primetime soap opera that launched the careers of Michelle Williams, Katie Holmes, and others when The CW was still called The WB.

One Tree Hill (2003-2012)

A young man (Chad Michael Murray), his half brother (James Lafferty), and their loved ones face various social and professional challenges while growing up together in a small town from North Carolina.

Why it is one of the best shows like Outer Banks: What could be considered The WB’s successor to Dawson’s Creek is this intense coming-of-age drama that also served as breakthrough for many members of the One Tree Hill cast — including Sophia Bush and Brooke Davis Baker.

Pretty Little Liars (2010-2017)

The Summer I Turned Pretty (2022-Present)

A teenage girl (Lola Tung) suddenly finds herself embroiled in a love triangle with two of her childhood friends (Christopher Briney and Gavin Casalegno) while spending the summer at their beach house.

Why it is one of the best shows like Outer Banks: In case you come to a point where you have had enough of attractive youths in danger, but still long for Outer Banks’ picturesque setting and romantic complications, Amazon Prime’s series adaption of the novel The Summer I Turned Pretty should do the trick.

I'm a massive fan of television. It started when I was young and watched hours of Disney Channel shows, but of course, it has now expanded into the world of adult television through several different genres – drama, comedy, horror, you name it, and I've probably watched it. I had to do something while at home when the pandemic had us confined to our homes. 

But in my time watching show after show, various options started out fantastic. They had excellent plots, brilliant storytelling, and great acting, then slowly dwindled. From terrible, horrible TV show endings or shows that dipped in quality over time, here are 30+ great shows that lost their way by the end. 

The Walking Dead

Do you want to hear a fun fact about myself? I watched The Walking Dead until the bitter end, and the emotional Walking Dead finale made me cry a ton. But man, it definitely could have been better. 

The Walking Dead started hot when it first aired and had a pretty steady and brilliantly told storyline until about Season 6, and then when Andrew Lincoln ended up leaving, it all started to tumble down the weeds. 

While we have a good amount of fan favorites coming back for The Walking Dead universe shows, it never quite picked itself up after that when the show was one the series to be watching. 

Lost 

Lost is known now for its awful finale, but truthfully, the entirety of the series had a downfall slump. The main reason is that it was literally consumed by all the mysteries that needed to be solved by the end of the series, and somehow, the show 'lost' itself that way. And, of course, we don't even need to talk about the horrible ending. I hadn't even watched the show then; it was all I heard about for weeks. 

Riverdale 

I remember writing long ago that I had plenty of issues with Riverdale, but I never expected it to turn into the off-brand MCU because that's exactly what happened somehow and they all had powers. And then, in the last season, the main group went back in time somehow. What the heck? What happened? 

This hit CW show started so good with the murder mystery, and then it just tumbled completely.

Game Of Thrones

So I'll be honest here and say that I have rewatched Game of Thrones, and plenty of it still holds up, but you can tell it starts to dip in quality at the very beginning of Season 7 – maybe even Season 6, though I did love "Battle of the Bastards."

Even so, the Game of Thrones ending is pretty much considered one of the worst of the 2010s, and as a hardcore Daenerys supporter, I fully stand by that. They did my girl – and almost all of these characters – dirty. 

The Office

The Office is another clear-cut example of when a main character leaves, the show starts to fall apart. The hit sitcom did try to pick itself up after Steve Carell left in Season 7, but it never reached the heights of where it once was. I was glad we saw him for the finale, but it never felt the same.

Heroes

The first season of any show is crucial, and Heroes had one of the best, featuring the story of ordinary people who discover they have superhuman abilities. This was the superhero show before all the MCU shows started to take over. 

But then Season 2 came along, and this show went downhill fast. It was just horrendously bad, and I, for one, struggled to get through the rest of the seasons after that. 

Westworld

Westworld had everything going for it: a fantastic idea, an excellent Westworld cast, and, the best yet, the funding of HBO to truly take this world into the new age. 

But then both Season 2 and Season 3 happened, and the plot got so convoluted I could barely keep up with it, and all the characters I once loved, I  ended up hating. And then the fourth season came and it’s just so different from what we were given. Unsurprisingly, it was canceled after the fourth season when backlash started to grow more and reviews went down.

That '70s Show 

I don't know what it is about Season 7 and some sitcoms, but that was the case for That '70s Show, when Topher Grace, who played Eric Foreman, left the show. And, of course, it never recovered. I don't care if he did appear in That '90s Show; it just doesn't feel the same. 

How I Met Your Mother

I don't need to get into this. How I Met Your Mother was great, from the fantastic cast to the comedy to Barney and his jokes, but the intensely divisive ending ruined everything. It just did. I can't return to the series and only recommend finishing it to some.

Weeds 

Weeds is a black comedy that ran for several seasons on Showtime and tells the story of a widowed mother who starts selling marijuana to support her family. And while the first few seasons were great, the rest were very different. It felt like another show in its later seasons, and by the end (102 episodes), the plot didn't feel remotely similar to how it was in the first season. 

Glee

There is so much to like about Glee. The Glee cast is incredibly talented, and the best Glee covers still top my playlists, but the story took a nosedive after Season 3. Both Season 1 and Season 2 were great, and Season 3 was alright but still enjoyable, but Season 4-6 was just an utter catastrophe of a story that was only saved by some of the brilliant voices on that show. Other than that, it can stay locked away at McKinley High. 

Supernatural

Supernatural was an excellent fantasy series about two brothers hunting down demons, ghosts, and monsters. And I did enjoy this series until the end, but it certainly was not the same show from the beginning. Many plot points needed to be clarified, and there was plenty of fan service, so as much as I like my spooky boys, it didn't need to be like this. 

The Big Bang Theory 

So I'll fully say that The Big Bang Theory is a great show, but this is another case where it feels that the last few seasons were there just for the money. There was no impressive story to be told, and the characters experienced little growth. It was just a dive into obscurity.

Pretty Little Liars

Pretty Little Liars was just an unnecessary drag. Again, a murder mystery is always good, but when the puzzle doesn't make sense towards the end, it makes the show that much harder to follow. And not only that, but the main characters weren't still in high school by the end. They were in college and out in the working world – this should have been just a high school story. 

Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl should have just ended after a few seasons, but it went on because it was the biggest show ever at the time. The series was fun until the later seasons, where the reveal of who Gossip Girl is was utterly disappointing and nonsensical. Not only that, but the finale – and final season overall – felt rushed. 

Two And A Half Men

Fun fact – I just binge-watched all of Two and a Half Men not long ago and I enjoyed it – until about Season 10. 

Charlie Sheen did bring a certain vibe to the show that Ashton Kutcher couldn't, but he did keep the show going for about two seasons before it started to fall apart more than it already had. 

Euphoria 

Okay, so Euphoria technically is still ongoing. However, I'm still determining if we'll even get Season 3 ever since the tragic passing of Angus Cloud. I'd be fine if it ends with two seasons. 

The first season of Euphoria was great television, but the second was so out there and had so many plot points that didn't make sense. The acting was the only thing that saved it because that's always great. But other than that? There's little to love about Season 2. Some things were improved, but others weren't. 

Gilmore Girls

We all like to turn on Gilmore Girls when the fall comes around, but have we forgotten that the ending is terrible? And that Rory's character is utterly destroyed by the end of it? Yeah, I thought so – and the revival didn't do an excellent job of making it any better. 

Killing Eve

The first two seasons of Killing Eve were brilliant, and I loved watching this cat-and-mouse game. But then the next two seasons' plots fell apart entirely, and it led to characters that really shouldn't have been featured getting the spotlight, followed by an ending that fans are not super happy with. 

13 Reasons Why

I liked 13 Reasons Why during its first season because it told a bold message about the effects of bullying and words. But this show should have remained just a miniseries because the seasons that followed were unnecessary and ultimately dissolve the point of the first season when they somehow try to redeem Bryce (the assaulter). 

Scrubs 

Scrubs ran for nine seasons and took the world by storm with its medical comedy mixed with drama. Plus, viewers got to know Dave Franco for the first time. But the later seasons feel like messy attempts to try and make funny jokes that do not land and a story that is not there at all. 

Suits 

I know Suits was wildly popular on Netflix in August 2023, but the series is just ok to me compared to many other great legal dramas. Don't get me wrong, the first few seasons are great television, but as the show goes on and the cases become stranger and more unique, it's different from the show it originally was. 

Bones

Twelve seasons happened for Bones, and the show was alright, but everything was dragged out so long that by the time there was a payoff, there were barely any more fans to care as much. And not only that, but the story would become more convoluted as time passed. I won't spoil anything, but it's a hard watch for later seasons. 

Community 

Okay, hear me out; I love this show and the Community cast, but let's be honest: Seasons 4, 5 and 6 were not the best. Both Season 4 and 5 were bad, and while Season 6 was getting a little better, it was nowhere near as good as the first three seasons of this show. I'm hoping that the Community movie will bring that level of comedy back.

Money Heist 

The thing about Money Heist is that it was so much fun at first. Was it over the top? Yes, totally, but that's what made it fun to watch. But then, as the series went on, it just got ridiculous with its story, and nothing made sense.

Once Upon A Time

Admittedly, I was a big Once Upon a Time fan because I loved Disney movies, but by the time this show ended, it felt like a Disney cash grab using the most famous names from their list of princesses and characters to make a buck. Elsa somehow even made it into this show. The story didn't mean anything anymore.  

True Blood

I put this on here because I know how badly my mother and father hated the ending of True Blood, and I decided to watch it. Not only did the series' narrative completely fall apart by the finale, but the characters were making choices and decisions that didn't align with what the story had set up for years before. Nothing made sense. 

Dexter

I enjoyed watching Dexter for the first time, and I actually say Dexter is worth re-watching, but I can see why most people don't watch it after Season 5 nowadays. The story certainly takes a dip in quality, and the ending is only for some and is controversial for a reason. I do think Dexter: New Blood made up for it a bit. 

Shameless

Shameless was my favorite TV show, but after Emmy Rossum left, it was always different. The Gallagher family dynamic fell apart, and nothing ever flowed as well. Rossum wasn't even there for the finale, making it feel even more incomplete. 

The Vampire Diaries

Do I even need to get into this? The Vampire Diaries died when Nina Dobrev left, and the story fell apart. I don't care what spinoffs there are; you can't make me watch them. 

Modern Family

Don't even get me started on Haley in this show or any of the choices these characters make at the end of Modern Family that make me want to rip my hair out. I will go on for hours. This show was so good until it wasn't, and it drove me mad. 

House Of Cards

House of Cards was a brilliant drama on Netflix, but of course, the central star, Kevin Spacey, faced several allegations of sexual misconduct, so it had to shift course – and from there, it just fell apart. It should have been canceled once Kevin Spacey. 

All of these shows are worthy of a single watch, but maybe not a rewatch. There is plenty of great drama here, but I can also live without it. Either way, I'll go check out Breaking Bad for the umpteenth time – that'll never let me down. 

For about as long as there has been television, there have been spin-offs — TV shows that exist in the same continuity as one popular series, typically focusing on a side character made into the central protagonist. Some have proven to be very successful (such as when Kelsey Grammer’s Cheers character became the title role of the Frasier cast) while others are remembered today as a notorious failure (such as when Friends cast member Matt LeBlanc led Joey for two seasons — a season too long for some).

Then, there are some series spun-off from hits that exist in-between, neither achieving success, nor going on to be remembered for their short-lived run. We thought it would be fun to jog your memory (or inform you for the first time) about those shows by looking back at some our favorite TV shows and their forgotten spin-offs.

21 Jump Street (Booker)

While the breakout star of 21 Jump Street was obviously Johnny Depp — who would cameo in the 2012 movie adaptation as Tom Hanson — it was Richard Grieco — who appeared in the 2014 sequel, 22 Jump Street — who got to lead his own show as recurring character, Dennis Booker. However, Booker, which followed the rebellious, youthful-looking cop as an insurance investigator, only lasted one season from 1989 to 1990.

The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (Planet Sheen)

Most fans might consider The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius to be one of the rare TV shows that surpassed the movies they were based on, but would not say the same about Planet Sheen. In fact, the series — which follows the adventures of Jimmy’s hyperactive best friend (Jeffrey Garcia) while stuck on an alien planet — managed to last three seasons, but has an IMDb rating of 2.9.

All In The Family (Archie Bunker's Place)

Creator Norman Lear’s groundbreaking comedy, All in the Family, was the parent series of several other successful sitcoms, including Maude and The Jeffersons, with one of its lesser-known spin-offs being Archie Bunker’s Place. Starring Carroll O’Connor reprising his Emmy-winning role as the owner of his own bar and restaurant, the series actually had a good four-year-run, but now lives in obscurity.

Alice (Flo)

The series adaptation of Martin Scorsese’s Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore promptly steered clear of becoming a forgotten TV show based on a movie, but its sole attempt at a spin-off was not as successful as its parent series. Her scene-stealing, Emmy-nominated performance on Alice as outspoken server Flo earned Polly Holliday her own eponymous series set at her own diner in her Texan hometown, but after one season, viewers told the show it could kiss their grits.

American Idol (American Juniors)

There have actually been multiple times when popular reality TV shows attempted a version that featured underage participants, including American Idol. Airing on Fox in 2003 (just a year after its predecessor’s debut), American Juniors featured host Ryan Seacrest, according to EW, and Season 1 runner-up Justin Guarini as a judge, but did not generate quite the same buzz — despite launching Lucy Hale’s career, which Jimmy Kimmel Live! unearthed.

Barney Miller (Fish)

One of the reasons why Barney Miller is remembered as one of the funniest and best mystery TV shows of its time is its hilarious supporting cast, which included the late Abe Vigoda in the Emmy-nominated role, Phil Fish. ABC greenlit a sitcom that would follow the New York detective outside of the precinct, but — as USA Today recalls — it was cancelled after one-and-one-half seasons in mid-1978, less than a year after Fish’s retirement episode of Barney Miller aired.

Battlestar Galactica (Galactica 1980)

Years before the 2000s-era reboot of Battlestar Galactica became one of the most beloved sci-fi TV shows of its time, the first reboot of Glen A. Larson’s cult favorite series was greenlit pretty quickly after it ended. However, Galactica 1980, which brought the action to modern day Earth, would also end very quickly after 10 episodes, due to poor reviews and was later edited into the TV movie, Conquest of the Earth. 

Baywatch (Baywatch Nights)

In 1995, while Baywatch was still in its prime, David Hasselhoff reprised his Baywatch cast role of Mitch Buchannon on a series that saw the lifeguard moonlighting as a private investigator. As ratings declined, the writers opted to turn Baywatch Nights into an X-Files-style paranormal investigation drama for its second season, which would also be its last.

Bewitched (Tabitha)

In 1977, just five years after the end of Bewitched, an attempt to continue its magical legacy was made in the form of Tabitha. Following Samantha and Darrin’s eponymous daughter (Lisa Hartman) as an adult, the show failed to cast a spell on viewers and was cancelled after 11 episodes.

Bones (The Finder)

A Season 6 episode of Bones called “The Finder” — in which Brennan and Booth call upon the help of eccentric, but inquisitive, Army veteran Walter Sherman (Geoff Stults) — served as a backdoor pilot for a spin-off of the same name. Also starring the late Michael Clarke Duncan, The Finder, unfortunately, could not find an audience and did not make it past its 13-episode run in 2012. 

Cheers (The Tortellis)

While Frasier would find great success in its 11 seasons, it is not the only spin-off from Cheers, let alone the first, which would be The Tortellis. This sitcom put Dan Hedaya’s recurring role as Carla’s ex-husband, Nick, and his own family at the forefront, but was met with criticism for its stereotypical depiction of Italian-Americans (according to ScreenRant) and low ratings, sealing its early downfall.

Columbo (Mrs. Columbo)

If you want to see a good whodunit TV show in the style of Columbo but with a female lead, I would recommend checking out Peacock’s Poker Face with Natasha Lyonne, instead of Mrs. Columbo. This mystery series starring fellow Orange is the New Black cast veteran Kate Mulgrew as the never-before-seen wife of Peter Falk’s iconic lieutenant was not so well-liked by audiences, or the producers of the parent series, and was taken off the air after 13 episodes, as Slash Film recalled.

Dawson's Creek (Young Americans)

In the same year he was introduced on Dawson’s Creek for a three-episode stint, Rodney Scott’s Will Krudski went on to be the lead character of Young Americans, which aired on The CW when it was still called the The WB. Despite being ahead of its time for its commentary on themes like gender roles and starring Kate Bosworth and Ian Somerhalder, the absence of anyone from the Dawson’s Creek cast may have deterred viewers from tuning into its summer 2000 run.

Doctor Who (K-9 And Company)

In its 60 years of existence, the British sci-fi staple, Doctor Who, has inspired multiple spin-offs, with Torchwood being a successful example, but we cannot quite say the same about K-9 and Company. The series never continued past its 1981 pilot, but a more successful team-up of Elisabeth Sladen’s Sarah Jane Smith with the robotic dog called K9 would happen years later in the form of The Sarah Jane Adventures.

The Dukes Of Hazzard (Enos)

Bumbling Hazzard County cop Enos Strate (Sonny Shroyer) had the honor of leading his own self-titled series that followed his adventures fighting crime in L.A. with his partner, Turk Adams (the late Samuel Wright). However, he would return to his original role on The Dukes of Hazzard after Enos faced cancellation after a single, 18-episode season in 1981.

Dynasty (The Colbys)

The primetime soap opera Dynasty — the most popular show of the 1984-1985 season — focused on the personal struggles of the wealthy Carrington family. In 1985, ABC debuted a spin-off centered on the rival family, the Colbys, which would earn an Emmy nomination for its cinematography, but was cut short after just two seasons.

Fame (Fame L.A.)

More than a decade after the end of Fame — which was loosely based on 1980 movie of the same name — a new series emerged that was set on the other side of the country. Yet, despite earning Emmy Awards wins for its opening title music and choreography, Fame L.A. did not live forever, and was cancelled after one season in 1998.

Family Ties (Day By Day)

There are some spin-offs that really try to stretch the connective tissue between to their parent series, such as Day by Day, which starred Douglas Sheehan as Brian Harper, who was written as an old college roommate of Steven Keaton (Michael Gross) from Family Ties. That tie was, apparently, not strong enough for this NBC family sitcom to last longer than two seasons, but  — on the bright side — it would allow series regulars Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Courtney Thorne-Smith to go on to star on Seinfeld and Melrose Place, respectively.

The Golden Girls (The Golden Palace)

After The Golden Girls ended with Dorothy (Bea Arthur) moving away with her new husband (Leslie Nielsen), Rose (Betty White), Blanche (Rue McClanahan), and Sophia (Estelle Getty) would invest in a very understaffed Miami hotel. Also starring Don Cheadle in one of his earliest roles and Cheech Marin, The Golden Palace was actually the third spin-off of The Golden Girls (after Empty Nest and Nurses) but the first to last only one season.

Growing Pains (Just The Ten Of Us)

Even if you have never seen Just the Ten of Us — for which Bill Kirchenbauer reprised his recurring Growing Pains character, Coach Graham T. Lubbock, from 1988-1990 — you might recognize a few of its key actors. Namely, A Nightmare on Elm Street cast lead Heather Lengegnkamp and Matt Shakman (director of WandaVision and the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot) played two of Graham’s eight children and Dennis Haysbert played his assistant coach, Duane Johnson.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (The Girl From U.N.C.L.E.)

Most modern day audiences had never even heard of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. before Guy Ritchie’s movie adaptation of the 1960s spy series came out in 2015. Therefore, we would certainly forgive anyone for forgetting (or never knowing about) The Girl From U.N.C.L.E., which followed the assignments of another agent from the titular organization, played by Stefanie Powers, for 29 episodes from 1966 to 1967.

Once Upon A Time (Once Upon A Time In Wonderland) 

Just a couple years after the debut of Once Upon a Time, ABC introduced another story of fairytale characters struggling to find an escape from the real world which looked directly toward the seminal work of Lewis Carroll for inspiration. Yet, critics and audiences were more impressed with the visual aesthetic than anything else about Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, which went off with its head after one 13-episode season.

Party Of Five (Time Of Your Life)

Acclaimed family drama Party of Five was a breakout hit for rising stars Matthew Fox, Neve Campbell, Lacey Chabert, and Jennifer Love Hewitt — the latter of whom would reprise her role as Sarah Reeves Merrin as the lead of Time of Your Life. Also starring Jennifer Garner, the series — in which Sarah moves to New York to learn more about her biological parents — suffered from low ratings during its sole season, which was split in half by a five-month hiatus before Fox’s failed attempt to bring it back for Summer 2000.

Pretty Little Liars (Ravenswood)

It is funny to think of how many somewhat ordinary dramas take place in the same universe as another series that is complete fantasy, such as Ravenswood. In 2013, Pretty Little Liars cast member Ashley Benson appeared as Hanna Marin to establish her hit series’ connection to this show — about five strangers embroiled in a curse plaguing the titular town — which lasted one season on Freeform when it was still called ABC Family.

Rugrats (Rugrats Pre-School Daze)

A special episode of Rugrats — which Paramount+ recently rebooted — that imagined the babies as preteens would inspire a successful series called All Grown Up!, which was the first spin-off to the long-running Nicktoon, but that was not always the case. According to Variety, Nickelodeon had originally been developing a series focused on Angelica Pickles and Susie Carmichael that would be shelved for years and eventually be released in 2005 as Rugrats Pre-School Daze, which only had a total of four episodes.

Sanford And Son (Sanford Arms)

Despite a few exceptions on this list alone, spin-offs tend to be most successful when a popular and recognizable character is given the lead role and not an entirely new character, like what they did with Sanford Arms. This continuation of Sanford & Son saw widowed father Phil Wheeler (Teddy Wilson) take over Fred (Redd Foxx) and Lamont’s (Demond Wilson) rooming house — a change of pace that did not seem to resonate with viewers and resulted in a very quick cancellation in 1977.

That's So Raven (Cory In The House)

Raven-Symoné would reprise her role as a psychic of the same name as an adult on Raven’s Home, which was not the first time Disney Channel debuted a That’s So Raven spin-off. In 2007, Kyle Massey came back to play Cory Baxter on Cory in the House, in which he moves into the White House after his father (Rondell Sheridan) becomes the President’s personal chef. Also starring Madison Pettis, you could say the sitcom lasted a fitting two terms (seasons) after 34 episodes. 

Three's Company (The Ropers, Three's A Crowd)

The original Three’s Company landlords were Stanley (Norman Fell) and Helen Roper (Audra Lindley), until they left in 1979 to lead their own self-titled sitcom that was cancelled after two seasons in 1980. In 1984, the parent series’ finale served as a sort of backdoor pilot to a new show called Three’s a Crowd — centered on Emmy winner John Ritter’s character, Jack Tripper, his new girlfriend, Vicky (Mary Cadorette), and her father, James (Robert Mandan), who becomes their landlord — which only lasted one season.

Walker, Texas Ranger (Sons Of Thunder)

Years before The CW rebooted Walker, Texas Ranger with Jared Padalecki in the title role (and also greenlit a short-lived prequel set in the old West called Walker: Independence), Chuck Norris and his younger brother, Aaron, had their own idea for a spin-off. After introducing Dallas detective Carlos Sandoval (James Wlcek) in Season 4, he was given his own series in 1999 called Sons of Thunder — in which he becomes a private investigator — that ran for six episodes on CBS.

The X-Files (The Lone Gunmen)

There are three TV shows that exist in Chris Carter’s X-Files universe: the iconic original (which was brought back for two more seasons in 2016), the marginally successful Millennium (which was retroactively confirmed as a spin-off), and The Lone Gunmen, which some say Fox should be embarrassed about cancelling after one 13-episode season. 

Focusing on the titular trio of eccentric conspiracy theorists (Bruce Harwood, Tom Braidwood, and Dean Haglund) who previously aided Mulder and Scully, the pilot episode of the spin-off, which aired in March 2001, is eerily similar to the tragic events of September 11th that year — as Journal News Online recalls — which is not why it was cancelled, but why it is somewhat infamous to fans who may remember it.

How many of these spin-off series do you actually remember? How many would you like to see brought back? And how many of these do you think never should have seen the light of day?

Network and cable shows are prone to mysteriously writing out fan-favorite characters, but in the case of Pretty Little Liars’ Paige McCullers, it was due to Lindsey Shaw being fired from the series for an addiction to Adderall, per the actress. As she recently recalled, her absence from the series between Season 5 and 7 was the result of a “cycle” with the drug abuse that she’s grateful to say she has since gotten past.

Shaw spoke of her experience getting let go from one of TV’s awesome whodunnit shows while hosting the Ned’s Declassified Podcast Survival Guide. While speaking candidly with her former Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide castmates, she said the following:  

Shaw apparently was struggling with body dysmorphia and drug abuse while working on Pretty Little Liars, and the showrunners took notice. Per the Addiction Center, people with body dysmorphia are at a higher risk of of developing substance abuse disorder, with researchers finding that 68% of subjects suffering from addiction reported that body dysmorphia contributed to their dependency. 

As the actress recalled, she’d look to Adderall to maintain a weight she was comfortable with, but “looked too skinny.” When she was off the stimulant, she couldn’t handle being “too heavy,” and it kept her using. Shaw continued:  

Shaw broke down in tears as she told the story, recalling that she found the moment “really sweet” because the showrunners would go on to bring her character back for the seventh and final season, and therein allow Paige to get a sendoff ahead of the Pretty Little Liars finale back in 2017. Shaw continued to reflect on the time in her life, saying this: 

Shaw spoke of how the pressures to compare her body to others contributed to her struggles with drug abuse, specifically Adderall, which can cause weight loss and suppress one’s appetite. While stepping away from the series in 2015 couldn’t have been easy, Shaw looks back at it with appreciation, saying the show did her “so right” for bringing her back and allowing her to say goodbye. 

Currently, Lindsey Shaw has overcome her addiction and regularly hosts the Ned's Declassified Podcast Survival Guide with Devon Werkheiser and Daniel Curtis Lee. She also has some upcoming work in Hollywood under her belt. On the Pretty Little Liars front, all seven seasons are now streaming with an HBO Max subscription, along with the much-different spinoff, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin. A second season of that show on the way following Season 1’s 2022 premiere. 

Growing up with diverse and representative media is vital. Luckily for us, the LGBTQ+ representation on mainstream television has increased over the years, giving us wonderful stories and lovable couples. This includes some iconic duos on young adult TV shows, and over the last couple of decades some truly wonderful pairings have graced our screens, from Willow and Tara on Buffy the Vampire Slayer 20 years ago to Nick and Charlie from last year's breakout hit Heartstopper. 

So, to celebrate pride month and some magnificent YA content, here are a few of the couples we consider iconic LGBTQ+ relationships on TV. 

Willow & Tara - Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was revolutionary in a lot of ways, from having Sarah Michelle Gellar as the badass titular character to the iconic couple of Willow and Tara, who were one of the most significant same-sex couples in TV history. Over the last two decades, there have been many essays written and posts on social media about how these two magical characters helped women and acted as one of, if not the first, lesbian couples they saw represented on screen in a fantastic way.

Charlie & Nick - Heartstopper

Heartstopper tells the story of two teen boys, Charlie and Nick, and their stories toward finding themselves and exploring their identities. In Season 1 of the show, we learned that Joe Locke’s character, Charlie, had really struggled at school as many kids bully him for being gay. But, then he meets Kit Connor’s Nick, who accepts him for who he is, and is on his own journey of self-discovery, and from there, their adorable relationship begins. 

Throughout the first installment, we see the two boys blossom as a patient, wholesome, and real love story is played out. Overall, Heartstopper feels like a big warm hug, and it's such a joyful representation of the LGBTQ+ community.

Santana & Britney - Glee 

Talk about an iconic friends-to-lovers story! Britney and Santana from Glee were one of the first LGBTQ+ couples, other than Kurt and Blaine, who I personally saw on TV, and it really made a big impact on me. Seeing these two women realize they loved each other romantically was deeply moving, plus we got some legendary musical numbers out of it – I’m looking at you “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” 

Both characters were developed and performed brilliantly, making them well-rounded and fantastic individuals on the show. So, when they got together they just became better, and stronger.

Adam & Eric - Sex Education

While the entire Sex Education cast is fantastic, Ncuti Gatwa’s performance as Eric is by far one of my favorites, and his relationship with Adam has been a real highlight of the show. 

Even though they didn’t last long, seeing as they broke up at the end of Sex Education’s third season, for the time they were together, they were one of my favorite couples. I understand why they’re no longer a duo, as it was time for Eric to find someone who was “ready to fly” like him. However, there’s also no doubt how lovely they were, and how much they helped each other grow and accept who they are.

Clarke & Lexa - The 100

There’s nothing like love during the apocalypse, or I guess in The 100’s case after the apocalypse. Following Clarke and 99 other kids’ journey down to Earth from space to see if it's habitable, we quickly find out humans have survived on the planet, and they don’t love the space folk. However, after fighting for a season and a half, Clarke and Lexa, one of the leaders on Earth, realize they can help each other, and they come to the conclusion that they actually like each other. 

To see two incredibly strong women as leaders on the show, and to see their epic love story was powerful, and it meant a lot to see that kind of representation in a mainstream sci-fi YA show.

Seb & Carlos - High School Musical: The Musical: The Series 

I can’t even begin to explain how happy my heart was when Seb showed up to be Carlos’ date at homecoming in Season 1 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. This show does a magnificent job of highlighting and normalizing LGBTQ+ relationships in high school, and part of that is through this lovely little romance between Carlos and Seb. 

Also, these two sing some phenomenal duets and perform wonderful numbers for each other that will blow you away and really bring home the point that Seb and Carlos are iconic:

Emily & Alison - Pretty Little Liars

While figuring out the identity of A was the priority on Pretty Little Liars, the couples were a close second. One of the most iconic pairings on this show was, obviously, Emily and Alison, and their relationship was one of the major points of LGBTQ+ representation in YA media during the early 2010s. 

Their soapy story was dramatic and over the top, but like every relationship on PLL you couldn’t help but ship Emison.

Victor & Benji - Love, Victor  

This spin-off show to Love, Simon follows a new kid, Victor, who DMs Simon looking for advice on how to navigate figuring out his identity and coming out to his friends and family. What makes this show so special is it deals with the intersections of race, sexual orientation, and religion. Following Victor’s family as they move to Atlanta, we see a working-class Latinx, Catholic family adapt to their new life, as Victor goes on his own coming-out journey.

Part of that journey is his relationship with Benji, the super cute barista Victor works with. Their relationship is sweet and wholesome, however, they face their fair share of bumps in the road, especially in Season 3. But, eventually, the two realize how much they love each other, as Victor continues on his own personal quest of growth and self-love.

There is so much power in growing up with media that allows you to feel seen, and for so many folks, shows like the ones listed above have helped them feel exactly that. From great book-to-screen adaptations, like Heartstopper and Love, Victor, to popular classics like Buffy and Glee, there are some great YA shows out there that feature iconic LGBTQ+ relationships, and these were eight of our favorites.  

It’s a mystery - a murder mystery. 

Like it or not, lots of people are into murder mysteries. We like the adventure that it brings, the questions that are raised, and everything else involved. And while there are plenty of murder mystery movies out there, such as Murder on the Orient Express or Knives Out (which is getting a 2022 sequel on Netflix), sometimes, we want a mystery that takes place over several episodes and not just two hours. 

That’s where these fantastic “whodunnit” TV shows come into play. From hits coming from the 2022 TV schedule, such as Only Murders in the Building, to older shows that you’ll surely love just as much, these are 10 of the best “whodunnit” TV shows that you should most certainly check out. 

Only Murders In The Building (2020 - Present)

If you want an amazing show that’s recent, you need to check out Only Murders in the Building. Starring Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin, the series tells the story of a group of true crime fans who decide to create their own murder mystery podcast when a murder occurs in their building, and also attempt to solve the case.

Truly, this has been one of my favorite shows of 2022 overall, and a fantastic whodunnit show. Not only is the chemistry between the three lead stars spectacular, but the story itself is full of twists and turns that you would never expect, and it makes you wonder what could possibly happen next. As someone who has been a fan of all of these actors for many years (especially Selena Gomez, since I grew up watching her), this is one of their best projects in years. And, a third season is already on the way for 2023 - with Paul Rudd!

Twin Peaks (1990-1991)

Next up, we have Twin Peaks, an older show from the nineties that is an amazing whodunnit series. In this show, we follow Dale Cooper, the detective on the case of the murder of Laura Palmer. But, as the mystery starts to unravel, he begins to notice that things aren’t all that they seem. 

The series, while it originally only lasted for two seasons, returned for a third in 2017 after it gained a cult following. The show itself is such a staple in whodunnit television and a series where you have no idea what the heck is going to come next. And, let me talk about the cinematography, some of the shots in this series are beautiful. It’s done so well and is a series you should certainly check out if you’ve never seen it before.

True Detective (2014 - Present)

This HBO anthology series is one of the best out there. True Detective is a crime drama where, in each season, we follow a new cast and a new story as they take on a new mystery that somehow gets even crazier than the last, from serial killers to corrupt politicians to so much more. 

This show is seriously so good, and the fact that each season has a completely new plot makes it even better. The stories themselves are widely different and really capture your attention right away, and the casts are always star-studded. The latest season of the show (which released in 2019), stars Mahershala Ali. Season 4 is already confirmed with several new stars.

Pretty Little Liars (2010 - 2017)

If you want to talk about a landmark in teen television dramas, this is the one. Pretty Little Liars tells the story of five best friends in a clique that falls apart when Alison, their leader, suddenly vanishes. But, a year later, they begin receiving messages from an unknown source called “A,”  threatening to expose their past and secrets. Now, it’s up to them to figure out what happened to Alison and who A is. 

God, this series. I remember distinctly when this show came out when I was in middle school that it was so popular, to the point where I didn’t even want to watch it. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve given the show a shot and honestly, it’s a lot of fun. I do enjoy the mystery behind it and I believe that it was worthy of the hype. It even got a new HBO Max spinoff, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, years later, so it’s worth your time.

Dexter - Season 1 (2006 - 2007) 

Dexter is one of the best Showtime shows out there. Featuring the titular character, Dexter Morgan, the first season of this series follows a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Police Department, who has a habit of killing bad people to soothe his carnal desire for blood. However, when another killer begins to play games with him, he takes it upon himself to figure out who it is. 

While I would mainly consider the first season of Dexter a “whodunnit” show for the purpose of this list, the rest of the series is great (minus that ending, but Dexter: New Blood made up for it). Michael C. Hall is a great leading man for the role of Dexter, and the show has plenty of moments that will shock and amaze you all at once. The mystery of the first season, though, is one of the best. And, the ending will leave you with your jaw hanging wide open.

Mare Of Easttown (2021)

Next up on this list, we have Mare of Easttown, an HBO limited series starring Kate Winslet. In this drama, we follow a detective in Pennsylvania who is struggling with her own issues and her world is rocked when a murder occurs in her small town. Now, it’s up to the detective to figure out who did this, as well as the link between the murder and a suspicious amount of missing women who have been reported. 

I think what I love about the Mare of Easttown is that it’s a very condensed story. It doesn’t get too crazy or out of this world, mainly just takes place in this small town, and features some truly amazing actors. The Mare of Easttown cast is great, too, offering very compelling performances. The mystery is believable, and you won’t be able to put down the remote after you start watching it.

Veronica Mars (2004 - 2019)

Next up, we have the popular CW series (which returned later on Hulu), Veronica Mars. Starring Kristen Bell, this teen drama follows her story as the titular character who also tries to solve mysteries as a private investigator, with her father’s help. And while each season she tries to solve smaller mysteries, there’s always one major case that she’s working towards solving by the end of the season. The first focuses on her friend’s murder, the second on a group of students killed in a bus crash. 

The first two seasons of Veronica Mars are truly the “whodunnit” seasons of the show and the best, but the other two seasons have interesting mysteries that people can enjoy. It’s really Kristen Bell in her lead role that makes this show so fun, because she’s just so good as Veronica Mars. Truly, one of Bell's best characters.

One Of Us Is Lying (2021 - Present)

If you’re looking for a Peacock original series, check out One Of Us Is Lying. In this teen mystery, five students go into detention one day, and only four come out. Now, we're along for the ride to see who of the four students is lying about the death of one of their classmates. 

As someone who read the book, this was such a good adaptation that I actually ended up watching it twice. The One Of Us Is Lying cast is outstanding in their roles, and the mystery is played out very well over the course of the first season. There’s even a Season 2 coming out very soon, so you might as well check it out now.

The Afterparty (2022) 

AppleTV+ has been coming out with some awesome shows, and The Afterparty only adds to that. This Apple TV+ original stars plenty of famous names, such as Tiffany Haddish, Dave Franco, Sam Richardson, and more, and tells the tale of a high school reunion gone wrong when someone is murdered. 

The Afterparty is such a distinct murder mystery, and what I like about it is that it tells the night from different perspectives. You don’t really know who to trust at first because everyone seems to have a reason as to why they aren’t the killer, but seeing it through the eyes of everyone else is so cool, and it helps that the show is seriously funny. Season 2 is on the way, so you might as well watch it now.

How To Get Away With Murder (2014 - 2020)

Last but not least, we have How To Get Away With Murder. Starring Viola Davis, this series starts off when a local sorority girl is murdered. A law professor and five of her students end up getting all caught up in it, and not everyone is being so truthful about who knows what. 

This show is so unbelievably good. The murder mystery is done so well and I truly am astounded at what they were able to do. The How To Get Away With Murder cast is amazing - and of course, Viola Davis is always a win. She ended up winning an Emmy award for her portrayal in the show, so you know she is just astounding.

Honorable Mention: Riverdale In Its Earlier Seasons (Seasons 1 And 2, 2016-2018) 

Okay, hear me out. 

Riverdale is a CW show that takes place in the town of Riverdale where strange things happen all the time, mainly following Archie Andrews and his friends. Don’t watch Seasons 3-6. They’re just bad, and the twists and turns have gotten even stranger - and some don’t even make any sense. 

However, the first two seasons of the show are actually pretty good television. The murder mystery surrounding the death of Jason Blossom, and the Black Hood killings really captured attention, and I think that for anyone who is into whodunnits, this would be entertaining to watch. Give it a shot. Just don’t see the rest of the show after, ugh.

With so many amazing choices, you’ll be swimming in murder mysteries for ages. It’s time to get on your detective hat and retrieve your notepad - we got some murders to solve!

Pretty Little Liars was one of Freeform’s most popular shows throughout its seven seasons. It had plenty of suspense, drama, romance, and ‘A’+ reveals. The show had a very dedicated fanbase that was heartbroken to see it end in 2017. However, HBO Max decided to resurrect the series with Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin. 

It didn’t just bring back the old concept, but gave it a dramatic makeover and created an equally as addictive series. It may one day have its own very dedicated fanbase. Pretty Little Liars and Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin have some things in common, but far more differences. It’s these differences that make Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin a must-watch TV series. 

It Has A Heavy Emphasis On The Horror Genre 

Pretty Little Liars always had horror movie elements, from creepy dolls to mysterious deaths to Keegan Allen's Toby in a durag. It could be scary at times. However, it always felt (to me) more like a suspense drama with horror elements, but not necessarily a horror TV show. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin fully embraces the horror elements and aligns more with shows such as Scream, Chucky, and Scream Queens.  

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin speaks to the horror movie geek in all of us by referencing so many of the best horror movies of all time. Horror movie nerd Tabby (Chandler Kinney) mentions many well-known classics and some cult favorites in nearly every episode—at least that’s how it feels. It both idolizes these horror movies and criticizes some of their more problematic elements. 

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin also fully embraces slasher films by having the storylines mimic those of popular films in that genre. It clearly takes some notes from the best Friday the 13th movies.  Depending on if you prefer horror or suspense, you may prefer Pretty Little Liars not being as scary, but if you’re a horror movie fan, you can appreciate how far Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin leans into a love of horror movies. 

With each show falling more into separate TV genres, it allows them to complement each other. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin feels like the natural evolution of the world created by Pretty Little Liars. 

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin Follows New Characters 

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin has a completely new cast and new characters. Sometimes when a show is rebooted, it tries to repeat character types but gives them different faces and names. Sometimes there are character archetypes that a show feels it needs to match with every new version of the show. For example, if an original series had a nerd, jock, weirdo, and clown, the next spin-off or reboot also has to have these characters. This allows people to constantly draw comparisons to the original counterpart of this type of character.

I don’t believe that the five main characters in Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin are just repeats of the main characters on Pretty Little Liars. They may share some traits, but overall feel different enough to not make their actions predictable, or for the new show to just feel like a copy of the original. 

We loved the Pretty Little Liars cast and characters, but it could get boring if we were watching just new versions of Spencer (Troian Bellisario), Hanna (Ashley Benson), Aria (Lucy Hale), and Emily (Shay Mitchell).

It Has The Bones Of The Original, But Different DNA 

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin shares plenty in common with the original show. It has its own version of ‘A.’ It also has an evil-ish queen bee, but this time she is actually a twin. There is also at least one direct reference to some of the original characters (you have to watch to find out which ones). And at the heart of both series is the friendship between the girls. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin definitely wants to pay homage to the original in many ways, but it clearly wants to make its own name. 

Besides different characters and being a completely different genre, it also treats ‘A’ in a unique way from the original series, both in the reveal and execution. ‘A’ is much more of a sinister character who's not afraid to kill. The show also starts with the five girls becoming friends and moving from that point, whereas, the original starts with their friendship broken up and them finding their way back to each other. Original Sin also makes the girls victims of their parents' lies and the lies of others, than it does about the consequences of some of their own lies and secrets. 

There are many ways Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin references Pretty Little Liars but puts a unique spin on things. This means fans of the original show can enjoy some of the things that made Pretty Little Liars great, but viewers who are unfamiliar with the first TV show can also enjoy Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin as its own entity.  

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin Is Dark And More Adult 

Being on HBO Max allows Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin to explore dark and more adult topics. Unlike some shows that think HBO means that it’s time to add as many sex scenes and nudity as possible, Original Sin chooses to use the more adult streaming service to touch on mature topics that go beyond sex. 

It addresses serious issues such as self-harm, grief and loss, teen pregnancy, bullying, misogyny, rape culture, and sexual abuse. It also uses the freedom that comes with HBO Max to go a little harder on the gore. Because of their gruesome deaths, I would be completely surprised if the characters who die in Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin somehow take a page from Pretty Little Liars characters and come back from the dead.

Many people who check out Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin may be fans of Pretty Little Liars. If they started watching it when it premiered in 2010, they’re at least 12 years older now, so they may want a version of the show that’s a little darker and more mature. Also, according to TV Technology, HBO Max’s core audience tends to skew 25+. This means with Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin being more mature and darker, it can appeal more to HBO Max’s subscribers.

It Has A Short Season

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin Season 1 only has 10 episodes. Pretty Little Liars has 160 episodes with at least 20 episodes per season. I believe that the thing that most premium cable shows/streaming and international shows do well is limit the episodes. 

This allows the writers to create a tighter story, which ultimately produces better quality. Some network and other cable shows go the 20+ episodes a season route. This often leads to a lot of filler episodes and sometimes means that storylines get dragged out to head toward that big season or series finale. 

Because Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin only has 10 episodes in the first season, you don’t have to deal with too many red herrings and constant misdirections. Some may love that Pretty Little Liars has so many episodes, but the twists and turns may have been a little more satisfying if they happened sooner each season. 

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin Indirectly Addresses One Of The Original Show’s Controversies 

Aria and Ezra (Ian Harding) are a fan favorite Pretty Little Liars couple. However, some had major problems with it, especially because he was a 20-something teacher hooking up with a teenager. They end the series by getting married. 

Because I think many (hopefully most) adults will agree that teachers and students, or any adults and teens, should not date, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin is not on-board for this kind of romance. There is an adult male character who tries to make a move on a teen girl, and it’s made known multiple times that it’s extremely inappropriate and problematic. The word “grooming” is even used to describe it. This doesn’t seem like a complete jab at Aria and Ezra, especially if you’ve seen the finale, but the show seems to be making a conscious statement against glamorizing these types of romances. 

It’s good to see Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin making more of a statement against adults dating teens, but not in a way that may alienate fans who liked the Aria and Ezra romance. Personally, I’m glad we won’t (hopefully) get any repeats of that in Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin.

There’s something about your breakout role that always sticks with you. Kristen Stewart and Ashley Benson can relate to that. The former is in the mix to land an Oscar nomination thanks to her terrific performance in Spencer, and the latter’s career has included a bunch of creatively interesting and challenging roles, but their buzzy, extremely popular roles in Twilight and Pretty Little Liars remain the touchstone for many. 

Perhaps that’s why fans were so excited and had so many questions after Ashley Benson dropped a picture of the two on Instagram late last year. That excitement continued when Benson dropped another picture of the two on Instagram, this time with a group of friends in matching sweatshirts at The Happiest Place On Earth…

It’s no secret that Kristen Stewart has a cool circle of friends, and for those who don’t follow celeb personal lives closely, that circle includes Ashley Benson, who has been quietly seen with the Twilight star for years. Despite their well-documented friendship, many are still catching wind of the power friendship for the first time and hitting up Twitter to excitedly comment. 

The two, in their matching Disney sweatshirts, posing with friends and taking pictures in front of Sleeping Beauty’s castle is exactly the kind of carefree energy all of us could use more of in 2022. Since the pair are planning their wedding, maybe they’ll consider Disneyland for the venue. While it seems unlikely, their unexpected visit to the park tells us anything is possible. 

The cool thing about Kristen Stewart is she always defies expectations. She takes on roles no one would expect, like a Hulu holiday movie. She’s opened up about what the chaos surrounding Twilight was like, and embraced the fans and movies that changed her life in surprisingly sweet ways. And she strives to be unapologetically herself, regardless of the pressure of fame. Sometimes that means taking a stand for her privacy. Sometimes it means visiting the House of Mouse with some of her best buds, including Benson who can most assuredly related given how intense Pretty Little Liars fans were during that show’s initial run.

It’s also great to see Stewart getting to have some down time. She’s been hard at work for the past few months promoting Spencer, which is one of the buzziest films of this award season. She’s also preparing for her directorial debut, an adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s The Chronology of Water. If the Hollywood legend-in-the-making wants to decompress at Disneyland, she’s earned the right to do so. 

You know who else earned a trip to Disney? Bella Swan. She went through a lot, and since her honeymoon was interrupted by an unexpected and seemingly impossible pregnancy, she never got to enjoy a vacation. In the inevitable Twilight reboot, they should definitely consider an end credits scene with Bella and Edward experiencing Splash Mountain for the first time - it would be the kind of weird, irreverent movie moment that Twilight fans on TikTok still celebrate to this day. Until that happens, we’ll just have to enjoy the glimpse we got of Kristen Stewart having fun there instead.

Riverdale is the titular name of a small little town in upstate New York on this show from The CW, where everything seems normal until one person begins to dig a little deeper into the area's dark history, and murders start to pile up, creating plenty of drama for its residents. 

Riverdale has certainly gone up and down in quality over its run, but I’ll always have a special place in my heart for its craziness. The characters are all so different, and the relationships are very entertaining to follow. It’s definitely a great murder mystery show and while it has its moments of utter strangeness - like those weird musical episodes - it’s still an entertaining teen drama.

All American (Netflix)

Next up, we have a classic sports show, All American. This teen drama follows a young high school football player who transfers to Beverly Hills High after being recruited from South L.A. We follow his wins and losses, both on the field and off. 

As someone who is a huge fan of sports movies, and loves watching football, I can confirm that this is an awesome show. I especially love that All American isn’t afraid to really dive deeply into hard to talk about topics that not a lot of older teen dramas really got into, such as racial injustice. The series is a lot of fun, and has great storylines filled with inspiration.

Elite (Netflix)

This international series on Netflix, Elite, is set in an elite secondary school, and follows the story of three working-class students who end up attending through a scholarship program, and clash with their wealthy classmates. 

I’ve always felt that Elite is like the Spanish version of Gossip Girl, except I think the characters are a lot more personable and fun to follow. We follow some truly crazy storylines, and I also especially love that the school they film in really does look like an amazingly private prep school. The romances in this are also so much fun to root for as well. There are six seasons and a seventh on the way, so time to binge.

Euphoria (HBO Max)

Next up, we have the HBO original series, Euphoria. While there’s a whole ensemble of characters, the main two that we follow are Rue and Jules, two young women, as they struggle through high school, and the social problems that surround them. 

Out of all the picks on this list, Euphoria is definitely the most mature. I’d say it even teeters between teen drama and adult drama with some of its content. However, I do feel that it’s an important show to watch, as it talks about some serious themes such as sexual assault, drug abuse and addiction, gender transitioning, and more. Zendaya is brilliant in her starring role, but the whole Euphoria cast is excellent, as well. Truly a great hit for HBO.

The 100 (Netflix)

Another CW show, The 100, follows a group of delinquents from a spaceship, who are sent back down to Earth to investigate if the planet is ready to be occupied by humans again, after a nuclear apocalypse. But, the kids find out that not only is the planet habitable - they are not alone. 

I absolutely adore dystopian shows like this, but mix that in with some teen drama and it’s a winner for me. From The 100 cast to the storylines to its surprisingly great costuming and set design, it’s such a well-done show, and the lore is truly interesting. I’m not the hugest fan of the last season, but the rest is great.

Degrassi: The Next Generation (Amazon Prime)

Taking place more than a decade after Degrassi Junior High, this show, Degrassi: The Next Generation, follows the obstacles of being a teenager, whether that means having to deal with relationship problems, sexuality, bullying, or even darker themes like sexual assault, gun control, and more. 

I’m going to be honest - Degrassi: The Next Generation was a little bit before my time of teen dramas, however, I recently binged it with a friend and I have to say, it holds up. The topics that are talked about are still relevant to today’s teens - if not even more so - and Degrassi: The Next Generation’s cast is full of talent and produced an entertaining show. I mean, the show even has Drake before he was super famous. It’s definitely worth a watch.

Gossip Girl (HBO Max)

A classic CW show, Gossip Girl follows Serena Van der Woodsen (played by Blake Lively), a teenager growing up on the Upper East Side of New York City. We follow her daily struggles with schooling, her best friend, relationship issues and more, through six seasons of craziness. 

As someone who recently just watched all of this for the first time, I can understand why it was so popular. The Gossip Girl cast is ridiculously skillful in their portrayals of these characters, and it’s no wonder why most of them went on to have very fulfilling careers. The storylines are intense and crazy, the characters easy to follow, and the fashion impeccable. The latest HBO Max remake isn’t that great, in my opinion, so better to just stick with the original.

Ginny & Georgia (Netflix)

With two seasons so far – and a third one on the way – this is probably one of Netflix’s most popular original teen shows. Ginny & Georgia follows Ginny, a young teenager who moves to a new town with her brother and mother, who had her as a teenager. Ginny lovers her mother, but as she starts to settle into this new town, she begins to discover secrets about her mom’s past that she never would have guessed – and it changes her life forever. 

Ginny & Georgia is one of those shows where you either enjoy the heck out of it or you can’t make it past the first season because the way the high schoolers talk can be very dated (as is the case with many teen shows). But what I will say is that the story is honestly really good and has a lot of suspense around Georgia’s character, and Season 2 especially dives into much heavier themes.

One Tree Hill (Hulu)

Another classic teen drama, One Tree Hill, is all about the Scott brothers, Lucas and Nathan, half siblings who are competing against each other for spots on the basketball team, romances, and a lot more, in the town of Tree Hill, North Carolina. 

I feel like everyone has heard of One Tree Hill. It’s such a great combination of genres within a teen drama, like having a sports storyline, including so much romance it’s almost impossible to keep up with it, and much, much more. Plus, the One Tree Hill cast is full of stars, such as Chad Michael Murray, Hilarie Burton, and James Lafferty. The show had nine seasons, so you know it was, at the very least, quite successful.

Pretty Little Liars (HBO Max)

Pretty Little Liars follows a group of five best friends, but their lives start to fall apart when their leader, Alison, suddenly vanishes. A year later, the friends reunite when they are threatened by a person named ‘A,’ who is saying they will expose all their darkest secrets. 

I feel like Pretty Little Liars is famous for so many reasons, whether it be for its drama, its romances, its dark twists and turns, or something else. The show became incredibly popular, and Pretty Little Liars cast went on to succeed in many different projects after the series finale.

Veronica Mars (Hulu)

In this popular CW series, Veronica Mars follows the titular character as she moves from high school to college, while also working as a private investigator, thanks to her father, who is a detective. In each new episode, we get to follow Veronica as she takes on a new case, while constantly trying to figure out the bigger mystery at hand. 

Starring Kristen Bell, Veronica Mars is the perfect example of a teen drama that can be entertaining for teens and adults. The mysteries that are involved are so much fun, but what really makes it such a great series is how, at the end of each season, it’s all tied to the bigger mystery of the season. And, how can you not love Kristen Bell as Veronica? She has that spunky personality that’s just impossible not to like.

Teen Wolf (Hulu)

Loosely based on the '80s film of the same name, Teen Wolf follows Scott, a seemingly normal high schooler whose world is turned upside down when he is bitten by a werewolf the night before his sophomore year, completely changing the course of his life. 

This is an excellent werewolf show, if not for the costume design, then for the Teen Wolf cast. Everyone works so well together and helped create a truly entertaining fantasy series that’s full of lore, enjoyable characters, and really cool monsters. My personal favorite character from the series is Stiles. Definitely one of Dylan O’Brien's best movies and TV shows.

Outer Banks (Netflix)

Lastly, we have the Netflix original series, Outer Banks. This series is set in the town of Outer Banks, North Carolina, where there’s a stark difference between the wealthy and the working-class, called Kooks and Pogues. We follow a group of Pogues, who are on a mission to find out what happened to their ringleader’s father, who mysteriously disappeared. 

I personally think that this show sometimes dives a little too deep into teen drama tropes by making these romances as intense as they are. However, Outer Banks provides some awesomely fun adventure with its inclusion of mystery, mixed in with a warm feeling provided by the setting’s atmosphere. I love to watch this show in the winter when it’s cold, as it reminds me of summer.

While there are plenty of awesome teen dramas that we can all look forward to popping up on the 2023 TV schedule, sometimes it’s better to just sit back, relax, and binge what's come before. Now, if you don’t mind me, I’m going to re-watch Gossip Girl for the umpteenth time.

In this CW show, we get to learn the history of the town of Riverdale, a little place north of New York City, where dastardly things happen often, surrounded by a veil of mystery, where friends from high school must come together to try and solve it.

On the surface level, this sounds like a fun little series where friends get to solve mysteries, but let me just say that the show is so much more than that, to the point where the ridiculousness of some of these plots almost feels like too much. However, once you get into it, you’ll find yourself entertained by even that. It’s definitely a great show to watch if you give it a shot.

Gossip Girl (HBO Max)

Another iconic teen show that is coming back with a vengeance into society is Gossip Girl. In this popular drama series, we get to see the lives of privileged teenagers in the Upper East Side of New York City, and the world of Serena Van der Woodsen and the friends around her, while the whole series is narrated by an unknown “gossip girl.”

The show made its mark in television for its not only ridiculously rich characters (I mean, this is the Upper East Side), but plenty of love triangles, twists, and the mystery of who exactly “gossip girl” is for the time the series aired. With a sequel series coming soon to HBO Max, it’s not a surprise that new fans are going to get introduced to the world of Gossip Girl, but to me, I don’t think anyone could ever quite replace that original Gossip Girl cast.

Dexter (Amazon Prime)

Ah, Dexter, the show with the finale that apparently was so bad, they’re doing a whole new limited series now. I wish the creators of Game of Thrones would do that too. Either way, Dexter was an iconic series about Dexter Morgan, a blood spatter analyst in Miami who lives a double life – as he helps investigate murders in the homicide division, he hunts and kills murderers who have escaped from the justice system.

Let me just start by saying that Dexter (the character himself) is a messed-up dude, but I really think that’s what makes this series so much fun and a great choice for Pretty Little Liars fans. It has that air of suspense surrounding it constantly, causing viewers to wonder if people will ever find out what he’s doing, and the story itself is intriguing and interesting to watch.

You (Netflix)

Honestly, and some may disagree, but You is one of my favorite shows of all time and I can’t wait until You Season 3. In this Netflix original (formerly a Lifetime series), we follow Joe Goldberg. a man who falls in love very easily and crosses the line between love and obsession easily as well, often going to extreme lengths so he can keep the woman he wants and provide for her – even if that includes murder.

It’s just so good and one of the best shows on Netflix, in my opinion. I’ve watched this show’s two seasons several times now and I can’t get over the drama, the story – and just how creepy Joe is. But the thing that really draws me into this drama series is, while Joe is a horrible person, sometimes, you actually want to root for him, showing the strange and complex relationship Joe has with the idea of “love” in his mind. It’s perplexing, engrossing, and drama-filled to the point where you’ll want to re-watch the show again too.

Big Little Lies (HBO Max)

Sometimes, your life seems absolutely perfect, with nothing going on that could distract you. And then, all of a sudden, a murder happens and unravels your life to the point where you don’t think you could ever return to normalcy. That’s exactly the storyline that Big Little Lies follows, based on the Lisa Moriarty book of the same name.

For fans of Pretty Little Liars, this is an amazing show for you. Not only does the plot revolve around mystery and murder, something Pretty Little Liar fans know quite well, but the cast is absolutely amazing. I mean, Legally Blonde and The Morning Show’s Reese Witherspoon? Divergent’s Shailene Woodley? The Prom's Nicole Kidman? It’s no wonder this show was nominated for so many Emmys with that acting talent. Trust me, you’ll most certainly want to check out this show. It’s seriously that good. Release your inner detective and try to solve the mystery yourself.

Dynasty (Netflix)

Family dramas have to be one of the oldest TV genres since the invention of the television set, and Dynasty certainly capitalizes on that. In this popular drama (a modern reboot of the classic primetime soap), a wealthy heiress, Fallon Carrington, is extremely unhappy to find out that her father (who is also a billionaire) is engaged to a rival employee at the family company. The series starts out with her wanting to find a way to separate them.

Dynasty to me is almost like how Gossip Girl is regarding wealth, but with extremely rich people. So rich to the point where it seems almost bonkers that they have this much money. But what really makes Dynasty stand out above the rest is the great casting for this, just as Pretty Little Liars had. I literally cannot picture anyone else besides Elizabeth Gillies playing Fallon. She fits the role incredibly and rocks it with flying colors, alongside her amazing castmates.

Desperate Housewives (Hulu)

I also felt that this was one of those shows our mothers watch religiously and I thought it was weird back then – but ever since I decided to give it a shot, I finally realized how awesome Desperate Housewives actually is. In this well-known series, Wisteria Lane is where we are, in a fictional town and state, where we get to see the lives of a group of women, seen through the eyes of their friend and neighbor who took her life in the first episode.

Let me say that if you think Pretty Little Liars is dramatic, just wait until you get a hold of the cast of Desperate Housewives. They do not hold back the drama from you. You are thrown right into the thick of it in the first episode, and it does not let go until the series finale. With eight seasons to binge, I promise you that if you begin watching this show, you won’t be able to stop.

The Society (Netflix)

For fans of teenagers who basically run the world – and let’s be honest, Pretty Little Liars is like that, where the heck are the parents? – The Society is for you. In this Netflix original, the teenagers in a town in West Ham, Connecticut must learn to try and somehow run their community when out of nowhere, the rest of their population disappears.

The mystery in of itself would be enough to draw in any Pretty Little Liars fan, but what keeps you in the story that follows and the reveals that come not that long after. But as always, The Society fell victim to Netflix’s chopping block too soon, so because of that, you might get left on some cliffhangers. Even so, the series is still worth a watch and super fun.

Tiny Pretty Things (Netflix)

When I was first composing this list, the new Netflix series, titled Tiny Pretty Things, was one of the first shows that popped up in my mind for Pretty Little Liars fans. In this original, the premise is set in a ballet school in Chicago and focuses on the students, instructors, and everyone else that surrounds it. However, like with any high school, there is plenty of drama, alongside some love triangles and mysteries galore.

A fun fact I always like to point out with this show is that the dancing is also performed by the actors, according to Marie Claire, so not only are they great at their acting, but they can dance their butts off too. Even so, this is the series for you if you enjoy shows like Pretty Little Liars. It has everything you would expect, from the mystery of a strange death to secret relationships to scandalous secrets. The hits keep coming with this Netflix original.

Revenge (Hulu)

As the last item on this list, Revenge is certainly not the least. In this popular drama, we follow the story of Emily Thorne, a young woman who makes it her mission to avenge her father after he is thrown in prison for treason when she was a little girl, and later died while behind bars. Now, she returns to the Hamptons to get revenge for her father, starting with the Graysons.

Revenge is the perfect show for fans of Pretty Little Liars because the whole entire plot revolves around one woman trying to get revenge, going to crazy lengths to do so. However, what really makes Revenge tick is the chemistry between actors. Emily VanCamp and Madeleine Stowe are absolutely amazing in their scenes together, and the rest of the cast shines. Plus, there are some insane twists later on down the series, but of course, I can’t say those now. You have to watch the show for yourself.

I swear, with all these Netflix TV shows and Hulu TV shows, and everything else on this list, we are truly never going to run out of television to watch. Even so, now you can see just how many options there are for Pretty Little Liars fans to enjoy. Hopefully you can find something to binge and bide your time until the new series comes out – it’s only a matter of time.

She not only gave her stylists credit by tagging them, but also indicated that she got it in London, which is where she'll presumably be located for the foreseeable future while filming her new series, the thriller Ragdoll. While Lucy Hale has changed up her hair color over the years bouncing between varying brunette shades, this is seemingly the first time in a while that she’s gone fully blonde, and she is rocking it!

Last month it was announced that Lucy Hale would be starring in Ragdoll, a new series from AMC set in the UK. The deadly thriller, based on the novel of the same name by Daniel Cole, is about a killer who murders six people then dismembers them and sews them together into the shape of a “grotesque body,” dubbed Ragdoll. Hale will portray new recruit DC Lake Edmunds who will be helping on the case. Although it’s technically unclear whether this change in hair color is for her new role, it’s still a great and noteworthy change for her either way.

In Lucy Hale’s 2020 movie, Fantasy Island, the actress was sporting blonde locks for the film that were similar to her updated 'do. A few weeks ago, Hale posted a blonde update to her Instagram marking what was only just the beginning of her new look. Now that she’s full-fledged blonde and has shorter hair than usual, it could indicate that this is a new chapter in her life, or that it’s for her upcoming project, or both. The different styles that Hale has gone through over the years proves that she can rock any color.

Last year, Lucy Hale starred in The CW’s Riverdale spin-off, Katy Keene, as the show’s titular character. The series only lasted a single season before the network decided to cancel it, surprising the cast and fans everywhere. However, Hale recently reprised her role of Katy Keene in an episode of Riverdale for a short scene where her character was heard during a phone call. She didn't actually appear fully in person, which was disappointing, but it still made some fans very happy and hopeful that there could be more to come from her and the rest of the Katy Keene crew. Though probably not while she's filming in the UK.

Almost a year to the day since Freeform caused an uproar by cancelling The Perfectionists, the first Pretty Little Liars spinoff, the show’s universe has come back. HBO Max released the following teaser. After watching, let's regroup below for some speculation and hot-off-the-presses theories! Without further ado, let the latest drama begin:

One sentence has sent me down a rabbit hole! The description in the YouTube video mentions “new” everything -- including the generation that will be featured. Plus, there is an intriguing new subtitle. The new HBO Max show is entitled Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin. It is time to dive into some theories.

There Was An Original “A” And The New Show Is Prequel

“Original Sin” hints that Pretty Little Liars could be taking a blast to the past with its new spinoff. Instead of exploring stories in the present, could Pretty Little Liars be headed back in time to reveal the origins of the “original” A? Perhaps even the person that inspired the culprit who unleashed a reign of terror in the original series? Maybe.

The Spinoff Could Follow The Original Liars’ Parents

If Pretty Little Liars is looking to the past instead of the future like the Gossip Girl franchise, who better to follow than the original PLLs’ parents? When you think back on it, they never seemed as freaked out by their daughters’ odd set of circumstances as they should have. Was that because they already had experience with an “A” of their own? I could see the spinoff exploring it.

There Will Be No Connection To The Original Show Whatsoever

Another thing that would be totally unexpected is if the latest attempt at a Pretty Little Liars spinoff makes no connection to the original show. It could be a version of Pretty Little Liars that takes place in space, for all we know, and in the distant future. Whatever happens, it may not include any connections to the show that started everything.

Pretty Little Liars’ last spinoff, The Perfectionists, did feature characters from the previous show. Mona and Alison were the principals who returned for it. The show kept fans of the original series’ ears finely tuned for updates on Mona and Alison’s friends, sneaking in relationship updates, and baby news (congrats Hannah and Caleb). Since The Perfectionists has wrapped, the series’ creator has provided a hopeful update on the Alison/Emily front.

After announcing their surprising breakup during the spinoff’s run, I. Marlene King told Twitter that Emily and Alison had gotten back together and were raising their daughters. It was a happy ending for the couple as another spinoff brews. While you wait for word on the potential prequel's release date, you can watch Pretty Little Liars on HBO Max along with this fall’s premieres.

Pretty Little Liars was a Freeform hit series from 2010 to 2017, back when the network was still called ABC Family. The series followed four best friends as they dealt with the mysterious disappearance and possible death of their other best friend. While trying to figure out what happened to Alison (Sasha Pieterse), the friends started to receive text messages from the mysterious A figure. She or he wanted to expose all of their secrets. What’s a little blackmail among friends, right? The Liars were in for a whirlwind as A tormented them for seven seasons.

Pretty Little Liars had two official spin-off series Ravenswood and the recently canceled The Perfectionists. It’s only been a few years since Pretty Little Liars ended, but there is already a reboot in the works. Before a new set of Liars hit the small screen, let’s check in with the actors who brought the original Liars and their friends and family to teen drama fame

Lucy Hale (Aria Montgomery)

Lucy Hale played Aria Montgomery, one of the Liars from 2010 to 2017. Aria had one of the series’ most complicated romantic entanglements, as she spent much of her teen years in a relationship with her English teacher, Ezra Fitz (Ian Harding). Hale has been quite busy since Pretty Little Liars ended.

She appeared in a couple of horror films, Truth or Dare and Fantasy Island. She appeared in the films Dude, The Unicorn, and A Nice Girl Like You. Hale also had a role in an animated movie called Trouble. In 2020, she appeared in the movie Son of The South and has an upcoming movie called Big Gold Brick in production. It’s a dark comedy where she’ll star opposite Emory Cohen, Andy Garcia, Megan Fox, and Oscar Isaac.

In 2018, Hale had the leading role in the short-lived CW series Life Sentence. She then returned to the world of the CW in the Riverdale spin-off Katy Keene. It was also canceled after one season. In July 2020, she signed on to join the cast of survival thriller Borrego.

Ashley Benson (Hanna Marin)

All seven seasons, Ashley Benson played Hanna Marin, the insecure member of the Pretty Little Liars club who eventually found her voice and attitude. In 2018, Benson appeared in a film called Her Smell that had an ensemble cast that included Elisabeth Moss, Cara Delevingne, Dan Stevens, and Amber Heard. The film was about a fictional rock star and her band.

Benson has one feature film in production, The Birthday Cake. It is a movie about a young Italian man who must travel to bring his uncle a cake to celebrate the tenth anniversary of his father’s passing. He witnesses a murder on the way to his uncle’s house, which leads to him investigating the real story behind his father’s death. In collaboration with eyewear company Prive Revaux, Benson teamed up with Matt Bomer to make their own collection of eyewear called Bomer X Benzo.

Shay Mitchell (Emily Fields)

Shay Mitchell played Emily Fields, a teen who started the series coming to terms with her sexuality and sexual identity as a lesbian. In 2018, Mitchell starred in the horror film The Possession of Hannah Grace.The film followed a former policewoman who encounters supernatural beings while working in a morgue.

Mitchell appeared in the first season of Netflix’s hit-series You as Peach Salinger. In 2019, she appeared as one of the stars of Hulu’s series Dollface. The series also stars Kat Dennings, Brenda Song, and Esther Povitsky. Dollface is about a woman who gets dumped by her boyfriend and now must take a look at her life and choices as she reenters the world of female friendships. Hulu recently renewed it for a second season. In 2018, Shay Mitchell appeared in Drake’s video for “In My Feelings.”

Troian Bellisario (Spencer Hastings)

Troian Bellisario played a-typical Spencer Hasting throughout Pretty Little Liars. She was the tightly wound one who had a thing for her sister’s boyfriends. She often found herself spinning out of control when things got too complicated. In 2017, Bellisario wrote and produced a film called Feed. She co-starred in it with Tom Felton. Troian Bellisario also appeared in a science fiction film called Clara with her husband Patrick J. Adams.

In 2019, she appeared in the film adaptation of Where’d You Go, Bernadette. The film was directed by Richard Linklater and starred Cate Blanchett, Billy Crudup, Kristen Wiig, and Laurence Fishburne. She appeared on an episode of Stumptown and directed episodes for other Freeform shows. She directed an episode of Famous in Love and two episodes of Good Trouble.

Sasha Pieterse (Alison DiLaurentis)

Pretty Little Liars began with the disappearance of Alison DiLaurentis and became so much more complicated. The Liars spent much of the first few seasons trying to figure out if Ali was still alive. In 2018, Sasha Pieterse appeared in a drama called Coin Heist, which was released by Netflix. It was based on the young adult novel of the same name. Pieterse also appeared in the film The Honor List.

In 2017, she was a contestant on Dancing with the Stars. She appeared in the same season that Jordan Fisher won. In 2019, Pieterse reprised her role as Alison to appear on the Pretty Little Liars spinoff series The Perfectionists. She also appeared in an interactive series called Epic Night.

Janel Parrish (Mona Vanderwaal)

Mona Vanderwaal was just someone you could not trust in the Pretty Little Liars world. Janel Parrish played the insane, but fun Mona very well. Parrish appeared in the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before franchise as Margot Covey, the older sister of lead Lara Jean (Lana Condor). She also appeared in the films Mighty Oak, I’ll Be Watching, Trespassers, and Until We Meet Again.

Parrish co-starred with Sasha Pieterse in The Perfectionists, where she once again became Mona. She also appeared in an episode of Magnum P.I. Parrish has a theater background and in 2017 appeared in A Walk to Remember: The Musical and Cruel Intentions: The Musical. From 2017-2018, she took on the role of Sandy in a production of Grease.

Ian Harding (Ezra Fitz)

Ian Harding played Ezra Fitzgerald, Fitz for short. He was the hot new English teacher who risked prison time to be with Aria. Harding appeared in several films since Pretty Little Liars ended: People You May Know, Office Uprising, and the Oscar-nominated Ford v Ferrari.

Harding also had a recurring role on Chicago Med, reuniting him with his former Pretty Little Liars co-star Torrey DeVitto. He also had a recurring role on the DreamWorks animated series Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeasts. In 2019, Harding signed on for the Amazon Comedy Pilot Good People. It’s a series about three generations of women working in a college as they try to navigate feminism during the current climax. Lisa Kudrow, Whitney Cummings, Tasha Smith, Greg Kinnear, and Josie Totah signed on for the pilot. It’s written and created by Cummings and Lee Daniels.

Tyler Blackburn (Caleb Rivers)

Tyler Blackburn played Caleb Rivers from Season 1 to Season 7. He appeared towards the end of Pretty Little Liars Season 1, and Hanna and he had instant chemistry. They then had a rollercoaster relationship that at one point had Caleb moving to Ravenswood, to appear on the spinoff series. In 2017, Blackburn appeared in the musical Hello Again. His biggest role since Pretty Little Liars has been as Alex Manes on Roswell, New Mexico.

Blackburn also appeared in an episode of Charmed and in the Discovery channel film Capsized: Blood in the Water.

Keegan Allen (Toby Cavanaugh)

Toby Cavanaugh started Pretty Little Liars as the strange kid who is forced into a secret affair with his blind stepsister. He eventually began an on-again/off-again romance with Spencer. Keegan Allen appeared in the series Major Crimes and What/If. He also voiced a Slut Dragon in Rick and Morty.

Recently, Allen signed on to appear in the Walker: Texas Ranger reboot starring Jared Padalecki. He plays Walker’s brother. He appeared in the films Actors Anonymous and James Franco directed Zeroville. In 2020, he appeared in the horror film No Escape with Holland Roden.

Holly Marie Combs (Ella Montgomery)

Holly Marie Combs played Aria’s mother Ella Montgomery on Pretty Little Liars. In 2019, Combs appeared in an episode of Grey’s Anatomy. It also featured her former Charmed co-star Alyssa Milano. In US Weekly, Combs teased that she may launch a podcast devoted to her hit-series Charmed.

In May 2020, she also launched the Pretty Little Wine Moms podcast, which reunites her with former Liars co-stars Lesley Fera and Nina Peeples as they drink wine and rewatch Pretty Little Liars episodes. It also includes guest appearances by other Pretty Little Liars actors and actresses.

Laura Leighton (Ashley Marin)

Laura Leighton played Hannah’s mom Ashley Marin. Leighton appeared on the series Code Black and L.A’s Finest. She also appeared in the Hallmark holiday movie Christmas on Honeysuckle Lane. She also guested on Holly Marie Combs’ podcast Pretty Little Wine Moms.

Chad Lowe (Byron Montgomery)

Chad Lowe played Aria’s dad Byron Montgomery. In 2018, Lowe appeared in the comedy 7 Days to Vegas. From 2017-2018, he appeared on several episodes of Supergirl as Thomas Coville. He also appeared in the Hallmark Hailey Dean Mystery movie series.

Lowe directed a couple of episodes of Life in Pieces, Supergirl, Light as a Feather, 9-1-1, The Flash, and the High School Musical TV series.

A few months ago, Pretty Little Liars fans finally found solace in the update on Emily and Alison’s relationship. Cut to September, and there is more big news. The Freeform series is already getting rebooted, but there is a twist. If and when the Pretty Little Liars reboot lands on the small screen, it will not necessarily put its pretty little shoes on Freeform soil.

Even though Freeform was the home of both the original series and the short-lived spinoff, the person behind the reboot more than knows their way around a teen drama or two. THR reports that Riverdale’s showrunner, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, is taking on the effort to potentially bring Pretty Little Liars back. The reboot would feature a new story and a new set of characters to go with it.

Pretty Little Liars’ prospective reboot does not have a network yet. However, it is reportedly intended for HBO Max. Will that actually happen? Former Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale went on to star in the title role of the short-lived Riverdale spinoff, Katy Keene. At one point, it was thought that HBO Max might pick up the series, although that has not been the case.

Would a potential Pretty Little Liars reboot have better luck? The original is still a beloved property, even though fans have not had a lot of time to mourn it disappearing from their screens. Now, there is talk of new characters amid a new storyline, and in all likelihood a fresh big bad.

If this reboot happens, it is unclear if it would exist in the same universe as Pretty Little Liars. In other words, will the stars of the original series be able to return? It featured a new mystery in a new town. Unfortunately, The Perfectionists was not able to perfect itself enough for Freeform, which cancelled it after a single season.

The news did not sit well with PLL fans, who put Freeform on blast for the cancellation. Now, they have a little something to smile about, in the form of this potential new Pretty Little Liars reboot. Characters had babies, finally got married, divorced, and after The Perfectionist’s cancellation, reunited without ever appearing on-screen. Talk about an undertaking. Despite some forewarning, it got even worse for the pair, as Emily remained off-screen. Not too far into The Perfectionist’s run, it was revealed that Emily and Alison had gotten divorced.

You can imagine how frustrated fans were when the Pretty Little Liars’ spinoff got cancelled, closing the door on Emily and Alison’s future for the foreseeable future. That is, until now. Pretty Little Liars’ showrunner, I. Marlene King, has provided an important update. So, how is their relationship fairing post-cancellation? King tweeted the following tidings:

Yes, Emily and Alison are apparently back together and raising their daughters. I. Marlene King does not mention if the couple has remarried. From the sound of things, they are happy, though. For fans, that is arguably what matters most. The news is yet another update from the Pretty Little Liars universe, which is currently off-screen.

During its time on the air, the Pretty Little Liars spinoff revealed that Spencer and Toby had gotten married. At least, they thought it was Spencer that Toby married. The Perfectionists hinted that Spencer’s evil twin, Alex, had escaped from Mona. One of the more foreboding updates, along with Emily and Alison’s relationship status.

In a less ominous update, The Perfectionists also shared the exciting news that Caleb and Hanna had their baby. In the Pretty Little Liars series finale, it was revealed that the couple was expecting. Again, a happier update than Emily and Alison got. Of course, the situation was not without some context.

Right after the Pretty Little Liars spinoff was announced to be featuring the return of Alison, but not Emily, trouble set in. Had The Perfectionists lasted more than one season, it would have been weird for Emily not to be on it. Relationship drama between the couple was the only way to explain why Emily would not be with Alison.

The thing is that Emily and Alison also have two daughters together. Alison staying away from Emily also meant staying away from their girls. A development that made no sense unless it was for an extremely temporary situation. The good news is that what did not make sense has been rectified, if only in a tweet.

Without a second season, there is no reason to keep Emily and Alison apart, so they have reunited in the off-air universe to live happily ever after. Supernatural’s Jared Padalecki secured a new job when The CW ordered the Walker, Texas Ranger reboot to series last month. The series has been rounding out its core cast, starting with The 100's Lindsey Morgan as Walker’s partner Micki, one of the first female Texas Rangers in history. Now, Walker has cast Pretty Little Liars star Keegan Allen in a key role.

Keegan Allen, who played Toby Cavanaugh on Pretty Little Liars, is joining the Walker, Texas Ranger reboot as Liam Walker. Per Variety, Liam is Walker’s gay and conservative younger brother. Recently promoted to assistant District Attorney, Liam has taken care of Walker’s son and daughter during his two-year absence and has sacrificed a lot in his life to provide for and be there for his family.

Walker is a new take on the classic Chuck Norris series. Jared Padalecki stars as the series’ titular character, a widower who has been undercover for the last two years. With his children in the care of his brother Liam, Walker will have to adjust upon his return to Austin, Texas and will be jealous of Liam’s closeness with his children.

Naturally, Walker will have a lot to catch up on after being gone for so long. He’ll probably have to work on his relationship with family members, including his kids, but Liam will be there to offer some tough love to his older brother whenever the need arises.

Keegan Allen’s Toby was present on Freeform's Pretty Little Liars for its entire run and was roped in by the elusive “A” to keep quiet about his mother’s suicide. Suffice it to say that the Walker character will be a much different role for Allen and it will be interesting to see the dynamic between him and Jared Padalecki’s Cordell Walker. (As an aside: it’ll be weird to watch Padalecki play someone else besides Supernatural’s Sam Winchester after 15 seasons in the role.)

In addition to Walker, Texas Ranger and Pretty Little Liars, Keegan Allen has had guest starring roles on TV’s Young & Hungry, voiced a character in the animated series Rick and Morty, and appeared in two episodes of Major Crimes and the anthology series What/If alongside Jane Levy.

Walker joins The CW’s line-up alongside Superman & Lois, which is currently the only other new show that has been ordered to series by the network. The CW, known for its penchant for superhero shows like The Flash and Supergirl, has also ordered a pilot for David Carradine’s Kung Fu reboot.

For all that Pretty Little Liars was immensely popular and ran for multiple seasons on Freeform, its spinoff show Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists didn’t seem to connect the same way with its audience and was cancelled after just one season. Naturally, fans of the series weren’t happy about the abrupt cancellation (on a cliffhanger!) and expressed their disappointment with Freeform.

Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists followed Sasha Pieterse’s Alison and Janel Parrish’s Mona as they moved from Rosewood, Pennsylvania to Beacon Heights, Oregon to start new lives -- which was understandable. After all, they lived through a lot of trauma and murder on Pretty Little Liars. Of course, a new place didn’t mean a peaceful life and it wasn’t long before Alison and Mona were once again entangled in a new murder mystery. It didn’t help that the series was cancelled after a new mystery — who was the Professor? — reared its head and left fans wanting more.

Over on Twitter, several fans called out Freeform for cancelling The Perfectionists just as it was getting good. The bitterness is embedded in every sentence.

Another fan expressed disappointment over the cancellation, but claimed that Freeform waited far too long for the spinoff to air and that’s why it wasn’t as well-received.

Meanwhile, this fan was angry because The Perfectionists was not only cancelled, but it was left on a major cliffhanger. I get it. I’d be frustrated, too.

Some fans have already started a hashtag to help bring back the show, though that doesn’t seem very likely at this point. Meanwhile, The Perfectionists showrunner, I. Marlene King, who also served as the showrunner for Pretty Little Liars, took to Instagram to thank fans for watching the show.

Sasha Pieterse also shared a post following the news of cancellation, addressing her character as a friend who’s been on this journey with her for so many years.

It really is the end of the Pretty Little Liars era.

On Twitter, Sasha Piertese expressed her love for co-star Janel Parrish and she responded in kind. These two have shared a lot together over the course of two shows and their onscreen friendship will be missed.

When Pretty Little Liars ended, Mona had Spencer’s evil identical twin (Alex) and biological mother (Mary) under control. She was holding them in a dollhouse-style prison of her own making in Paris. Hence, when Pretty Little Liars’ spinoff, The Perfectionists, saw Mona walking around free, questions and alarm bells went off.

When the spinoff picks up, Mona has casually gotten a job a world away from Paris in Beacon Heights. Leading to a big question: who on earth is taking care of Alex and Mary? Well, Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists touched on that mystery earlier in its first season.

Mona cryptically said that the reasons for why she was in Paris had “escaped” her. It was a hint to the audience that Mona had lost Alex and Mary, and they are on the loose. The latest episode of Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists finally addressed the mystery a little deeper, thanks to an exchange between Mona and investigator Dana Booker.

In it, Dana asked Mona why she did not tell Beacon Heights University about what transpired in Rue de Siffleurs. To which, Mona responded that it was not relevant. Wait, what is known to have occurred there? The audience did not get an answer in their dialogue. However, Dana did not give up.

She followed up by asking Mona if she was worried that Alex and Mary Drake may try to find her. Mona played it cool, saying that she had “no idea” what Dana was talking about. That seems to settle that Alex and Mary are out and about, and Mona should be a bit worried. They are not forgiving people.

How did they end up escaping Mona’s lair? She seemed to have an undefeatable set-up. Are more answers around the corner? Maybe. Regarding the Mona/Alex/Mary Drake mystery, Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists’ showrunner, I. Marlene King, told TVLine:

Based on what Dana is saying, there is a bit of public knowledge relating to what Mona did to Alex and Mary. If that is the case, why is Mona not in prison? Did Alex and Mary opt to give an “innocent” explanation for their disappearance? Planning to take revenge on Mona themselves. Whatever is known it has risen the suspicions of Dana.

Is it an open secret that Mona kidnapped them? That does not seem likely. Albeit, Dana has made the connection that Mona had something to do with whatever is known to have happened to Alex and Mary. What is that? Viewers do not know.

Troian Bellisario, who played Spencer/Alex, is not currently planning to make an on-screen return to the Pretty Little Liars universe. So that kind of throws out seeing Alex again so this can get resolved. Alex’s mother, Mary, may be another story.

Obviously, Pretty Little Liars can leave us in suspense for a bit longer. The spinoff has done a consistent job of continuing or in some cases, abruptly ending, the events that concluded the original. Will it ever fully explain the twisted tale of Mona, Alex, and Mary? Stay tuned.

Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists is an entirely new chapter in the Pretty Little Liars franchise, but it's definitely doing a lot to keep fans updated on the characters they know and love from the original series. Unfortunately, that's not always a good thing, as "The Ghost Sonata" revealed the fate of one couple fans may have been rooting for. Looks like it's curtains for Alison and Emily, as the episode revealed the two former lovers have officially gotten divorced.

Emily and Alison's relationship troubles have been pretty well-documented since the start of Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, but the decline in their relationship really ramped up in intensity recently. Alison had been ignoring texts and calls from Emily, and received a package from the Rosewood Family Law Firm later on. Alison recalled later in the episode that she noticed new pictures of Emily and the girls on Instagram, and that Emily wasn't wearing her wedding ring.

It all was a slow build to a scene in which Allison was seen drinking a glass of wine in the distance. In the foreground of the shot was an email that was addressed to Emily. In the email Allison apologized and explained the last step of the process has been hard for her. With that said it's all over, and she's signed her side of the papers and essentially finalizing the two's divorce.

Allison is still upset about how things ended, but her signing the divorce papers may mean she's finally willing to accept there's no way of keeping her marriage together from a distance. Now Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists doesn't have to figure out how to keep that relationship interesting for the show without Emily, and is free to have Allison on the rebound and open to new relationships with characters that are a bit closer to her new home.

Those kinds of hookups along with the general sadness that comes along with the dissolving of her marriage could play against Allison of course, and lessen her ability to help the kids figure out the increasingly complicated mystery they're entwined in. There's really never going to be a good time to have Allison pre-occupied in other things, although it's probably better this band-aid was ripped in Season 1 before things get way deeper than they are now.

So, does this mean Shay Mitchell is never going to appear in Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists? It doesn't seem like there's a reason for her to appear at the moment, although Emily could always guest-star in a future episode to let the kids see Allison or something of that nature. Original stars from PLL are planning to appear, so perhaps if fans make it clear it's something they want to happen I. Marlene King will make it so.

Pretty Little Liars’ spinoff series gave fans of the original a massive update in its latest episode. There were actually two Perfectionists reveals when you count the big relationship news for a particular couple. Caleb and Hanna also had some pretty revelatory news. They had their baby!

The exciting news has reached Caleb’s portrayer, Tyler Blackburn. The Pretty Little Liars actor shared what he thought about The Perfectionists reveal that Caleb is a dad now! Along with his reaction, Blackburn explained what it got him thinking about when it comes to a cameo on The Perfectionists. Blackburn told TVLine:

This fan is also “open” to the actor reviving his role as Caleb for a brief reprise. Here is hoping the powers at The Perfectionists take him up on it. Not to be greedy because it is fantastic that Mona and Alison are both on the spinoff. More Pretty Little Liars stars never hurt anyone though, right?

Tyler Blackburn’s former co-stars may be around for The Perfectionists in the future, but not in front of the camera. Blackburn, on the other hand, sounds open to making an on-screen appearance on the spinoff. Yay! You may be wondering how the spinoff could explain him making a cameo without Hanna.

Well, with the baby needing to stay settled, it would make sense for Caleb to make the trip solo. It is not like he has not made those before. He did lead Pretty Little Liars first spinoff, the short-lived Ravenswood.

The explanation for Caleb visiting The Perfectionists could be a bit more complicated. What would bring him to The Perfectionists, if it is not Hanna wanting to see Mona? I have an idea.

Viewers of The Perfectionists got an eyeful of what appeared to be the mainframe of Beacon Guard. Mona could eventually want to dismantle it. Given Caleb’s skills as a tech expert, he could be the one Mona needs to help finish that theoretical mission. Or something else entirely.

Caleb would be more than willing to assist too. He and Mona had their rough spots. However, the two were on okay terms when Pretty Little Liars ended its run. Given that Mona is still BFFs with Hanna, she could have Hanna reach out to Caleb on her behalf. It makes sense that Caleb, being the good guy that he is, would want to help.

The Perfectionists gave Pretty Little Liars fans yet another reason to keep tuning in. Updates on the original show's cast of characters have been plentiful, which is helping keep them alive for fans, who miss their presence on the spinoff.

News of Hanna and Caleb welcoming their first baby comes after Hanna disclosed the couple was expecting in the series finale. Fans still do not know what the baby is named, so there is more to learn. The Perfectionists has provided the follow through.

It is one of the questions undoubtedly on the minds of many Pretty Little Liars fans: Will the stars of the original series return for its spinoff, The Perfectionists? Maybe, but there is a significant catch. Sasha Pieterse, who has starred on both series, explained:

It sounds like the actresses who played Hanna and Spencer will not be making an on-screen return. Sasha Pieterse told ET that her former Pretty Little Liars co-stars would make their way to The Perfectionists via behind-the-scenes work. The pair are apparently interested in directing episodes of the series. That is if The Perfectionists gets renewed for Season 2.

Considering the nature of this update; fans should not expect an in-the-flesh recap of Toby and Spencer’s current relationship status. Or Hanna to return with Caleb to show off their baby. The good news is fans have gotten updates on the characters via some revealing dialogue.

Why was the cast not able to have more to do with The Perfectionists' debut season? The actresses’ busy schedules. Sasha Pieterse explained the behind-the-scenes situation that led to the cast not being able to participate, saying:

It has been a busy time for the Pretty Little Liars stars. Troian Bellisario welcomed a baby daughter with her husband, Patrick J. Adams, since the long-running series ended on Freeform, per his Instagram. So, lots of joy-filled excitement happening for her.

Ashley Benson -- whom Sasha Pieterse also mentioned potentially taking on directing duty on The Perfectionists -- is still acting. She starred in the 2018 musical drama Her Smell with Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss and Legion’s Dan Stevens.

The Pretty Little Liars cast has not slowed down since the series came to an end. Sasha Pieterse and Janel Parrish, two of the original stars are both prominently featured on the spinoff. Meanwhile, Shay Mitchell starred in the first season of the Netflix hit You in the pivotal role of Peach Salinger.

Lucy Hale starred in the one-season CW series, Life Sentence. She has since signed on to lead the Riverdale spinoff, Katy Keene. Hale will take on the title role for the series.

Fans wanting an update on the actress’ characters will have to listen carefully. So far, The Perfectionists has given fans a lot of insight into what the Liars are up to these days. Some of it has involved breakups and for one, a new marriage.

Having Hanna and Spencer back would be exciting. Maybe someday. A lot has been happening in their lives off-screen. For now, this fan is content with the fact the characters are happy. Coming to The Perfectionists could only tempt fate at messing with that. No dramatic turn goes unpunished on Pretty Little Liars.

If you want an update on the relationship status of your favorite Pretty Little Liars couple, The Perfectionists is where to get it. Towards the end of the second episode, the spinoff gave fans a massive update on one Pretty Little Liars couple. That couple being Spencer and Toby, a.k.a. “Spoby.”

Mona was on the phone talking to BFF Hanna when viewers got the news. Spencer and Toby got married. Yes! The couple was in a happy place towards the end of Pretty Little Liars. So, this is a significant development of the positive variety for shippers. All thanks to The Perfectionists!

How was the wedding? Spencer and Toby opted to elope according to what Hanna told Mona. All of which fits with their coupledom. They have always been low key. Keeping it so secret is a bit surprising, though. Hey, whatever makes them happy! They overcame a lot of drama to get back together and married.

This news should give Mona and Alison something positive to talk about in next week's episode, while in the midst of all the mayhem. Along with being friends, Alison and Spencer share a biological brother, and they themselves are cousins. Plus, Emily is best friends with Toby. Perhaps Emily and Alison will talk about it off-screen. As for the bearer of the good news, Hanna is doing well.

Yes, viewers got an update on Hanna! Caleb and the baby are okay. Yay! Now, all we need is Hanna and Caleb to drop by with the baby for more Pretty Little Liars-related goodness. If anyone can help Mona, it is her bestie. For now, Mona will have to team up with Alison. So far, so good on that front.

At least one couple is doing well. The Perfectionists has seen Pretty Little Liars couples endure different outcomes. Alison and Emily’s post-series finale ending has been the most surprising. The one-time solid couple, engaged when the show ended, are currently on the outs. Or at least, they seem to be. Alison has yet to explain a deeply insightful reason for what led to their separate lives.

Likewise, Mona is apparently single. This despite her seeming to find romance with a guy in Paris. A lot has changed since that ending. For instance, Mona revealed a crucial bit of info in The Perfectionists’ series premiere. She lost track of Spencer’s evil twin. Could Alex Drake pop up again? Or worse yet, is she the one who married Toby and not Spencer?

Let’s not go there. That would be depressing and unsatisfactory. For now, fans can savor the knowledge of knowing that Spencer and Toby have gotten married. Meaning all but one ship has survived the aftermath of Pretty Little Liars’ series ender, so far.

All that is left is to get an update on Ezra and Aria unless I missed it. If not, the last viewers knew the couple was off on their honeymoon with plans to return and start the adoption process. The only way to learn the status of their relationship for sure is to stay tuned to The Perfectionists.

Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists finished its premiere with the beginning of a murder mystery. As viewers know, Nolan Hotchkiss met a grisly end in the series premiere. If you thought that Nolan’s murder would be the only mystery, think again.

There will be more to the Pretty Little Liars spinoff than that series-opening murder mystery. When asked what the format would be going forward, series’ creator I. Marlene King told CinemaBlend’s Nick Venable the following:

What could these other mysteries involve? Well, there are several options. The first is the mystery of why Nolan’s sister Taylor faked her death. Why did she do it and how did she pull it off? Furthering the mystery is that her brother knew she had, and they appeared to be working against some frightening force.

Speaking of which, the reveal of the all-seeing Beacon Guard is another mystery waiting to be solved. Why Mona is working with them and how Nolan and Taylor’s mom is involved is another angle to the whole thing. Not too mention there is the ongoing mystery of what led to Emily and Alison’s current relationship status.

Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists is already setting out on a similar course to the one set by its predecessor series. Did having that brand in place make the spinoff comfortable to push things further? I. Marlene King weighed in with the answer, saying:

Towards the end of its run, Pretty Little Liars started to push the envelope more, especially following the rebranding of ABC Family as Freeform. According to what I. Marlene King is saying, The Perfectionists got to start off with fewer restraints. A change from the way Pretty Little Liars got underway.

What can fans expect moving forward? Well, Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists’ creator hints at exciting times ahead. She even shared there is a special scene in the second episode that ties back to the original series. In her own words, I. Marlene King said:

Thank goodness Pretty Little Liars is still on Netflix! If you want to check the scene out, you can. As fans of the original know, its pilot ended with the supposed discovery of Alison’s remains before concluding with her funeral. Keep an eye out for the link between the scenes.

At the end of the day, Pretty Little Liars has meant different things to different people. What does is it mean to the franchise’s creator? I. Marlene King ended up sharing her take on that, as well as teasing how the new characters would come together, saying:

Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists did not see its characters get off to the best start with one another. Dynamics change and relationships grow, which will be the case for these new characters. Seeing them develop their relationship along with Alison and Mona developing theirs should be fun.

The Pretty Little Liars spinoff finally premiered on Freeform, and it gave viewers a look at the Pretty Little Liars universe without most of the characters who made that show so compelling. Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists doesn't even take place in Rosewood, but rather at Beacon Heights University. Alison and Mona are the two major PLL characters on board, and the premiere of the spinoff was quite different than what fans generally got in the original.

Still, Pretty Little Liars and The Perfectionists showrunner Marlene King promised that there will be one big similarity: an "A" character. Here's how King put it:

Marlene King referred to the new Big Bad as "'A'-ish" in her comments to TVLine, so we can probably rule out another reveal that the the central villain was actually a character's transgender sibling. Or an evil twin. Honestly, considering how wild the "A" and "AD" reveals were, The Perfectionists' version of "A" might have to be less bonkers. I mean, can you really outdo what Pretty Little Liars did with its first and then subsequent Big Bad?

That said, the series premiere set up a villainous presence that is certainly different from anything "A" or "AD" delivered with the Beacon Guard. The episode didn't reveal a ton about the security presence that seems to have way too much access for comfort, and Mona is clearly tied to the Guard somehow, but I think most of the characters would be more than a little skeeved out by the twist at the end of the hour.

Unfortunately, fans can't count on learning much about the new "A" character right off the bat. Marlene King, who has also revealed a big challenge in making the spinoff, stated that the character will come to light by the end of the first 10 episodes. That doesn't necessarily mean "A" 2.0 -- or 3.0, if we count "AD" -- more info will be held back until the last moments of that tenth episode, but we may only get small pieces of the puzzle scattered through the first episodes.

On top of a plot that is bound to be twisty, Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists has some wildly complicated relationships left over from the parent show to deal with, not to mention whatever is going on with the new characters. This midseason, you can catch new episodes of The Perfectionists on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on Freeform.

In a show where a murder mystery is the hook, how does one manage to surprise an audience? Well, if the show is Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, it reveals one of the characters, Mona, who's been talking to herself is actually addressing a room full of people who are watching live footage of things happening around the university's campus. It was a "wtf" moment that viewers most likely have questions about, and creator I. Marlene King says that answers are coming:

Well, at least some answers are coming. Right now we're not sure what to make of Mona's pep talk with the people behind that mirror, and it's even a question as to how much she knows about this organization. Is she working for them, or is she the mastermind behind some plot that's entangled all these people in this mystery? Why exactly was she asking if she had some role behind Nolan's death?

Judging from I. Marlene King's comments, perhaps the algorithm she created has something to do with this. Her algorithm brought the best people to Beacon Heights, but did it have had an unintentional side effect in bringing together a group of people who end up doing something sinister? Or, maybe she did something that may have led to the rooftop incident and is merely asking the surveillance people if they can say her actions led to that happening.

While Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists' creator wasn't forthcoming with answers, she did reveal that Alison will figure out at least some of what Mona is up to eventually. She may even find that "safe place" which the people monitoring the footage told Mona to go to following Nolan's death. For those in need of a good mystery in the coming weeks of spring, it's looking like this will be one of the new shows to watch.

Especially with the existing rivalries between characters, and the new dynamics with the new ones. Claire Hotchkiss seems like a particularly interesting character to watch, especially now that her dear son Nolan is dead. For those questioning whether Nolan is really dead, I. Marlene King confirmed to Us Weekly that while Chris Mason will appear in later episodes, he will certainly remain dead in the present.

Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists airs on Freeform Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. ET, and things are just getting started. As she points out, Mona and Alison's relationship has never been smooth sailing. Towards the end of the original series, they had made peace and not much else. Fast forward to the spinoff and things may be changing between them. According to Janel Parrish, the once arch-nemeses are going to have to team up, and that is not all.

It sounds like their frosty feelings for one another may begin to melt. Janel Parrish mentions a shift in their dynamic. Given the spot they are starting from, one would think that the only direction they could take it is up.

Speaking as a fan of the original, I always found Mona and Alison's dynamic to be one of the most compelling. Hence, the news that Mona and Alison would star in the spinoff together was personally thrilling to hear.

Their reunion should also be a draw for long-time fans, as the pair will have to deal with each other without the Liars around to referee. In many ways, this is a dream come true.

I may have missed it, but what is bringing the frenemies together at long last? As in why have they both been drawn to Beacon Heights at the same time? Alison was last seen living with her new fiancée Emily while raising the twins together. Meanwhile, Mona was in Paris, holding Spencer's evil twin and Spencer's evil twin's mother captive in a makeshift dollhouse.

What draws Alison and Mona away from all of this for Beacon Heights? For Alison, it is a job opportunity. Mona's motivations are not as discernible. One other thing: who is taking care of Mona's captives, now that she is in Beacon Heights? Stay tuned.

Alison's relationship status with Emily has been clarified. As for Mona's love life, well, watch and see. Janel Parrish teased Mona's romantic prospects on Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, saying:

Based on that, Mona sounds single as The Perfectionists gets underway. She seemed to have a boyfriend in Paris during Pretty Little Liars' series finale. Janel Parrish's comments indicate that their relationship is over. Remember how Mona dated Aria's brother, Mike, for a while? Maybe they will eventually get back together…or not.

Ever since Pretty Little Liars’ spinoff The Perfectionists was announced, and the fact that Alison would star in it without Emily, fans have had one significant question: What does this mean for Emily and Alison’s relationship? Well, Pretty Little Liars’ creator I. Marlene King has given PLL fans a much-anticipated update on Emily and Alison’s couple status. King said:

So, Emily and Alison may still be together, but maybe they are just on a break? What Pretty Little Liars’ creator, I. Marlene King told TV Guide indicates that fans will learn more of the backstory in the first 10 episodes of The Perfectionists.

Apparently, Alison had to take this teaching job in Beacon Heights. All the while knowing the physical distance it would put between her and Emily. The need for some space seems, right now, to be the source of the distance between them. Pretty Little Liars ended with Emily and Alison in such a great place, so this scenario is tough to comprehend without more context.

They were engaged to get married. Hence, Alison taking a job so far away for the spinoff is an off-screen development that has not boded well for the couple. What does Alison’s portrayer, Sasha Pieterse have to say about Emily and Alison’s relationship status? Pieterse shared:

Like prospective viewers, Sasha Pieterse is apparently in the dark, to some extent, regarding Alison and Emily’s couple-dom. Their relationship status is one of the driving mysteries that curious Pretty Little Liars fans should be drawn in by. There are those who will be interested to watch The Perfectionists to learn more about why Emily and Alison are not physically together.

Whether they are officially broken up is another question altogether. Based on what everyone is saying, Emily and Alison seem to be weathering a break of some sort. It does not sound like anything insurmountable for them to overcome.

One of the significant questions The Perfectionists will have to face with Alison as its connective star is why she left Rosewood. She was blissfully happy with Emily when Pretty Little Liars ended. Job opportunities aside, one has to think there is more to the story. Her motivations are still unclear.

Hopefully, Shay Mitchell will reprise her role as Emily, and if The Perfectionists gets a second season, she can help clear things up on-screen. Fans will want closure if there is a Season 2 and Alison is around for it. The good news is that Emily and the babies are doing well and in Rosewood.

The Pretty Little Liars spinoff is just days away from premiering, and what is known so far about Alison and her time on The Perfectionists is beyond intriguing. Mona will also be heading to Beacon Heights, meaning that this is apparently the place to be these days. Alison and Mona have always had dueling agendas, though, so it makes sense that where one is, the other would not be too far behind.

Perhaps there is something in this new town that Alison was willing to temporarily leave Emily to discover. Or, things are on the rocks with Emily and Alison is just trying to figure it out solo before returning to Rosewood to co-parent the babies with Emily. We'll all have to tune in and find out.

TV fans have plenty to look forward to, both on the broadcast and Hulu original front in March! If you're behind on MTV's Catfish, the first 28 episodes of Season 7 will be making their way to the platform. Meanwhile, new seasons of American Idol and Fear The Walking Dead will also be making themselves known to audiences using Hulu at their own paces, providing all the thrills one could need from reality or fiction.

Of course, this wouldn't be a Hulu lineup without some attention paid to their original content. With Into The Dark about halfway through its reign of terror, this month's episode entitled "Treehouse" will feed fans some food based horror. Though if you enjoy your scares with something a little more realistic, The Act will scratch that itch, as the first season of the true crime based anthology will tell the story of Gypsy Blanchard and her mother's extreme efforts to keep her little girl by her side.

Over on the movie focused side of the house, some recent notables and old favorites mix it up in the name of feature length entertainment. If you're a fan of either the classic Ace Ventura duology or Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, you're going to want to jump into your queue first thing next month, as all five films between those two series will be available. If you've been wondering what the fuss over the Academy Award winning documentary Free Solo has been all about, you'll get to see for yourself as the film will also be added to the Hulu library in March.

On the more offbeat and unusual path of filmdom, you can enjoy last year's indie noisemaker Assasination Nation, as well as the underrated Robert Zemeckis ghost story What Lies Beneath, both of which will debut throughout March's already busy schedule. Last, but not least, it's the 20th anniversary of Office Space; and while you may have missed the exact day of the celebration, it's never too late to have some friends over for some drinks and a case of the Mondays. Pretty Little Liars' Alison DiLaurentis is on her way back to television. Fans are getting an official glimpse at what's in store for her and others in Freeform's upcoming spinoff series Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists. Check out the promotional still below:

Yes, that is Sasha Pieterse's Alison DiLaurentis in full-on teacher mode in the Pretty Little Liars spinoff. The exclusive glimpse provided to TVLine makes the reality of Alison having left Rosewood all the more tangible. What this means for her and Emily's relationship/engagement is not entirely clear.

The upcoming spinoff will follow Alison as she ventures out of Rosewood and into the town of Beacon Heights. Alison is there as a teacher for Beacon Heights University, and based on the photo, she looks to be in her element. Authority was never something she struggled to exert on Pretty Little Liars.

In another promotional picture from the pilot episode, you can see Alison's enraptured students taking in what she is presumably saying. In another photo, Alison is in a one-on-one meeting with the talented cellist, Dylan. His instrument is nowhere in sight in the picture of him and Alison.

While the town of Beacon Heights seems great, like Rosewood, it is home to its share of secrets. Freeform has let prospective viewers in on what they can expect. Attending college together is a trio of friends, who are perfectionists and overachievers.

In the wake of Beacon Heights' first murder, the friends each find themselves hiding "behind a secret, a lie, and an alibi." It sounds as dramatic a set-up as the original Pretty Little Liars! So, there are a lot of reasons for fans of the original series to be excited.

There are no heavy hints as to what the students could be hiding in the gallery of promotional photos. While there is a mystery involving the new characters, there is also a crucial one involving Alison. Why did she leave her family with Emily in Rosewood? Is she substituting for a teacher, temporarily? So she and Emily are just doing a long-distance thing for a little while?

Will fans learn more about what happened in Rosewood following Pretty Little Liars' series finale? Alison is not the only character from the original series taking part in the spinoff. Long-time nemesis Mona will be accompanying her on the new show. How Mona becomes involved in the action at Beacon Heights is equally mysterious.

The standout character was last seen holding Spencer's twin sister and biological mother captive in a dollhouse. That dollhouse was all the way in France. Mona would have to have someone helping her take care of them so that she could go all the way to Oregon. It is just one of the many mysteries that fans should expect to have more light shed on when the spinoff debuts in 2019.

A premiere date for Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists has not been announced yet. You can re-watch the magic of the original series on Netflix, among many other shows. A spate of new shows await in the new year, and the spinoff will be among them, eventually.

Chicago Med already has one alum from Pretty Little Liars within its ranks, and it's getting another before the end of Season 4. Fans of both shows will soon see actress Torrey DeVitto reunite with Ian Harding as he's been added to the cast as a recurring character. What's better is it appears the two will be spending a good deal of time together on screen, as Harding's character description teased a tie to Dr. Manning.

As mentioned, Ian Harding has been confirmed for multiple Season 4 episodes on Chicago Med. TVLine reported Harding will play Phillip Davis, a man facing a "medical crisis" that will result in him bonding with Dr. Manning. It's not presently known when Harding will make his debut, but he will be seen eventually and apparently fairly often before Season 4 draws to a close.

As mentioned, both Torrey DeVitto and Ian Harding have starred together on a show previous to their reuniting on Chicago Med. Harding played Pretty Little Liars resident English teacher Ezra Fitz, and Devitto played Melissa. The two seem excited to be working together again, as Devitto shared a picture of the two that spread the news of the casting to fans on social media.

The two are apparently "trailer buddies" on set, although we don't know if that's just a cute bit for publicity or they're actually sharing a trailer. It would make sense to share a trailer considering their two characters will "bond' over some sort of unknown medical crisis that will plague Ian Harding's character. Perhaps Harding's character suffers from PTSD and in revealing his past trauma they both realize they're from a town where a bizarre murder took place?

It's more possible Dr. Manning will bond with Phillip perhaps due to something involving the current state of her relationship with Will. Perhaps the two bond over some issue she confides in him about, or some sparks fly between the Doctor and her patient and jeopardizes her future marriage? We're not entirely sure Chicago Med is planning to go that far with this bonding moment, but we're sure Pretty Little Liars fans wouldn't be all that upset if it did.

Or maybe it would anger a few, considering these two's Pretty Little Liars characters never interacted in a meaningful way on the Freeform series. A tender moment could send Aria superfans into a frenzy, as the thought of Spencer's shady older sister locking lips with Ezra might be too much to see even if it is on another show. We have no idea if something like that is even happening, so PLL fanatics shouldn't get too worked up just yet.

As far as television finales go, Pretty Little Liars had one of the most shocking. With answers to twists and out there reveals galore, the series ended in a way that largely pleased longtime fans, but really miffed others. While showrunner I. Marlene King seems largely content with how she brought her series to an end, she does regret that one special moment didn't happen between Spencer and Toby and, if she could, she'd change the show's finale to include it:

I. Marlene King noted that many "Spoby," fans were upset following the finale, as they believed Spencer and Toby never really got that happy ending they deserved. That came as a shock to King and the rest of the Pretty Little Liars writers, as they felt the moment where Toby realized Spencer is the true character and not her evil twin Alex Drake was enough of a conclusion. King told EW that while she's fine with the rest of the plotline of the show's finale, disappointing the true Spoby fans is something that still stays with her to this day.

That's a lot of guilt to carry for a small portion of the Pretty Little Liars fanbase, but it's understandable why I. Marlene King may feel that way after what she put those fans through in the show's later seasons. One twist that stung was when it was revealed that all of Spencer and Toby's hookups through Season 6B and 7 were not actually between the couple, but Toby and Spencer's damn evil twin Alex Drake. It was a knife twist for some even more painful than some of the awful things the girls went through over the course of the series.

I. Marlene King has tried to make amends with the fanbase since the conclusion of Pretty Little Liars, although it's been met with mixed results. Following the finale, King stated in interviews that Spencer and Toby got engaged following the finale and lived happily ever after. And while some are happy with that, others are not willing to accept her word as official canon. Perhaps to finally find peace, King might just have to make a one-off special just so Spencer and Toby fans will finally leave her alone. Surely few Pretty Little Liars fans would have a problem with that, right?

Just a little under a half a year ago, Lucy Hale said goodbye to her character Aria Montgomery and a show she called home for seven years. It's hard to imagine Pretty Little Liars without Hale, but apparently, that world was almost a reality. Way back when the show was in development, one of the five liars was forced to pick between it or another pilot she had been offered to be a part of. In the end, it was the catchy name and concept that sent Hale to the PLL side and on a seven-year journey:

Turns out the decision to join Pretty Little Liars was a good one as Lucy Hale doesn't even remember if the other project was even made, but it was tempting enough for her to consider. Hale said to Cosmopolitan the other project featured bigger producers, bigger stars, a bigger studio, and on paper, it seemed clear which option was the better to go with. It clearly sounds like Hale was tempted, but ultimately the idea of Pretty Little Liars won out, and obviously paid off as Hale could've found herself instead in a show that may have never actually been made.

While Lucy Hale wasn't exactly unknown prior to her stint in Pretty Little Liars, the show definitely helped elevate her celebrity and allow her to make lucrative deals with Avon as well as land other acting projects. Hale is currently filming for her next project, Life Sentence, which is set to air on The CW sometime in the Spring of 2018. Hale also has a few films in the works for 2018, so while PLL is over, she's still keeping plenty busy in Hollywood. Meanwhile, the legacy of her show continues to live on in the hearts and minds of teens everywhere, although that's not always a good thing.

As mentioned, Lucy Hale is headed to The CW with her new series Life Sentence sometime in the spring of 2018. It's not unusual for people to get ideas that they decide to use in their real lives from movies or TV shows. And, as we know, sometimes those ideas are simply not things one should take part of in the real world. Well, in a case of life imitating art in a bad way, two students are now in a whole lot of trouble for making some Pretty Little Liars-stye threats against their high school.

Police in Piqua, Ohio say that classes had to be canceled last Thursday after two teenage girls, aged 14 and 15, made threats against Piqua High School in a manner similar to what could be found on the Freeform show Pretty Little Liars. The school, which is about 85 miles west of Columbus, Ohio, granted students early dismissal Thursday and also canceled classes altogether on Friday while they investigated the threats. According to the Associated Press, police say that the 15-year-old made a Snapchat account posing as "A" that she used to post threats about revealing students' secrets, which then led a rumor to circulate that there would be a shooting at the school. After the Snapchat posts, the 14-year-old then wrote a threatening message on a bathroom mirror at school, which said "I'm still going to shoot up the school. A." Both teens have been arrested and charged in juvenile court for the threats.

Any Pretty Little Liars fan knows how significant posing as someone known only as "A" is. Throughout most of the teen drama, "A" sends the main characters a wide variety of messages that taunt and threaten them with the exposure of their secrets and also with bodily harm to them and those they care about. "A" frequently used text messages sent to their phones, but also sent letters, notes and handwritten messages in places where the girls at the center of the story could easily see the threats.

Right now, there's no word on why the two teens decided to make the threats against their school or on what type of punishment they could be in for should they be found guilty of the charges. However, it does appear that the girls didn't actually have anything that was truly dangerous planned for their classmates, which, I'm sure, is a relief not only for those in charge at their school and their fellow students, but the girls' parents, as well. A lot of insane things happened on Pretty Little Liars, which ended its seven season run earlier this year, and the activities of that show are not ones you'd want anyone to imitate in your immediate vicinity.

For now, we can all breathe a sigh of relief that the perpetrators have been caught, and that these Pretty Little Liars threats won't continue.

Warning: huge, massive, GIGANTIC spoilers ahead for the Pretty Little Liars series finale.

If Pretty Little Liars is known for one thing after seven seasons, it has to be the way it serves up absolutely wild plot twists are so outlandish that no lesser show would dare try to pull them off. This is a show that lasted even beyond the resolution of the central mystery, going on even after the identity of A was revealed. Hanna, Emily, Spencer, Aria, and Alison found plenty of new mysteries plaguing their lives as the years passed.

The latest mysterious villain to mess with the girls was none other than "A.D." Showrunner I. Marlene King made us wait until the very last episodes of the very last season to find out the identity of the person behind the initials, and it was a shocker. A.D. is none other than Alex Drake, a.k.a. Spencer's evil twin.

Okay, yes, A.D. as Spencer's evil twin has been speculated by some fans, and Pretty Little Liars is probably the only show that could possibly get away with playing the reveal of an evil twin totally straight, but it still came as a big surprise when Alex popped up with a British accent and a vendetta to take Spencer's vastly superior life for herself. She wanted Spencer's friends and family and lifestyle; naturally, as you do, Alex took extreme steps to make herself look like her long lost twin and insert herself into Spencer's world.

In what is arguably the creepiest twist of the finale, we had it confirmed that Spencer wasn't always Spencer in her Season 7 scenes. Sometimes, when we thought we were watching Spencer, we were really watching Alex doing her best Spencer impression. I. Marlene King has come out and revealed how long Alex was impersonating Spencer in the events of the series, saying this:

Something tells me Toby might be inclined to quiz Spencer before any future hookups until A.D. becomes nothing more than a distant memory. In fact, I wouldn't blame any of the characters if they started exchanging secret code words just on the off-chance that they had an evil doppelganger out there. As it turns out, actress Troian Bellisario was working to build Alex's character for a while, even if we didn't catch it at the time. I. Marlene King went on in her chat with The New York Times to say this about what Bellisario brought to Alex as opposed to Spencer:

Luckily, none of the characters have to worry about Alex coming back to haunt them any time soon. The second-to-last scene revealed that Mona had Alex and Mary King dressed up and living in her twisted version of a life-sized dollhouse in Paris. It's a pretty unsettling fate for an unsettling character, and oddly fitting. For once, the girls all had a happy ending, and their villain was nowhere to be seen with no prospects for escape. Sure, another group of teenage girls in Rosewood seems in for a rough ride with a mystery of their own, but Hanna, Emily, Spencer, Aria, and Alison really might get their happily-ever-afters following seven often hellish seasons.

Being Mary Jane: The Series: Season 4

Netflix is pretty heavy with riches this month, as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story alone is worth the subscription price. Though you'll have to wait until the middle of the month to indulge in some Star Wars glory, but fear not, as there's much more the service is offering. Also coming into play are classics like E.T.: The Extra-terrestrial and Police Academy, as well as new films you may have missed, such as the Academy Award-nominated Lion, or Bad Santa 2.

Digging into the Netflix Originals being distributed this month, we've got some interesting films and television programs on the docket. The Adventures of Puss in Boots returns for its fifth season, this time as part of Netflix's new "choose your own adventure" experiment in interactive television. Castlevania: Season 1 also debuts in July, bringing the anime adaptation of the beloved Konami video game to living, breathing life. Though if you're looking for something in the movie department, there are films like To The Bone in line for debut, as well.

Finally, some popular TV shows you might be interested in are hitting the digital queue next month, with iZombie's third season as a prime example. Though if you're still not caught up with Pretty Little Liars' last 10 episodes, those too will be coming into play during July's rollout. Whatever you may be looking for in terms of entertainment, Netflix has you covered, as usual! So keep an eye on your queue, and watch responsibly.

The line between TV and film continues to blur with each passing year. Much of this has to do with the increasing sophistication of televised storytelling, but we mustn't forget the contribution of proper special effects in this equation as well. CGI used to be something almost exclusively reserved for the highest tech and advanced Hollywood blockbusters, but now even the most seemingly mundane TV dramas can use it to great effect.

That said, not every TV show manages to use CGI successfully. Even some seriously prestigious series have incorporated downright terrible special effects over the course of the last few years, and that's what we're here to focus on. We've compiled a list of awful CGI moments from some genuinely great TV series...and others. Check out our list, and let us know what you think of this laughably bad use of the filmmaking technology. We have plenty of examples to get to, so let's kick this list off with a superhero who has actually benefited greatly from advances in special effects in recent years.

The Flash's Speedster Fights

The Scarlet Speedster's series on The CW deserves a ton of credit for the fact that it makes The Flash seem like a real hero. Many of the CGI effects used on The Flash are great, but the slow-motion speedster fights are just downright awful. The show hasn't found a way to make Barry Allen NOT look like a man-shaped balloon while he tumbles against his enemies in slow motion, and it's one of the few areas where The Flash has consistently faltered in delivering strong special effects. How they made King Shark look better than the central hero, I will never know.

The Walking Dead's Deer

Though its walker-flavored gore and splatter are always top notch, AMC's The Walking Dead has showcased a few key examples of some pretty bad visual effects over the course of its seven seasons on the air. Arguably the most egregious and Twitter-inflaming example of bad CGI on the zombie series occurred during Season 7 when Rick Grimes came across a comically bad computer-generated deer while within a rundown carnival. It's a particularly bizarre moment for the series when we consider the fact that The Walking Dead has a long history of incorporating real animals and practical effects into these types of shots; I guess they just couldn't swing those deer handler fees.

Terra Nova's Dinos

When your entire series is predicated on the depiction of awesome prehistoric creatures, you better make damn sure that your dinosaurs look flawless. Sadly for Terra Nova, that simply wasn't the case. The short-lived sci-fi series framed itself with a uniquely engaging premise involving humanity colonizing the past in order to escape a dying future, but it was ultimately held back in part by the downright terrible computer effects that were used to create the show's central monsters. Stephen Spielberg may have innovated CGI dinosaurs with the original Jurassic Park, but these Fox-originated creatures clearly were not ready for the size and scale that a TV budget offers filmmakers.

Supernatural's Leviathan Monsters

Sam and Dean Winchester have faced off against a wide variety of demonic cretaures throughout their twelve seasons on the air. While most of these craetures have generally looked pretty good in their various incarnations, one particular type of monster stands out for being pretty awful looking: the Leviathan monsters introduced during Season 7. Although the basic pitch behind the overall creature design is a fairly interesting and cool concept, the execution of the Leviathan design leaves quite a bit to be desired. The effects involved in creating these "Chompers" is comically bad, and it really has the effect of taking the audience out of a moment that should be scary. Remember The Langoliers TV movie?

Ringer's Boat Scene

Ringer wasn't the most well-received show when it debuted back in 2011, and the mediocre reception ultimately led to a limited life span. However, the show's single season on the air did manage to give us one of the worst modern examples of green screen in recent history. The sequence in question is supposed to see two of the show's characters out on a boat staring over the water at the horizon. Instead, the entire scene looks like it was entirely shot indoors (because it was) and the plainly obvious green screen effect has gone on to become one of Ringer's most enduring legacies.

*Once Upon A Time's Creatures *

Once Upon A Time has easily become one of ABC's most popular shows for its inventive take on classic fairy tales and Disney stories. However, while the show is fun and thrives on its whimsical premise, that doesn't change the fact that it has consistently used some pretty poor CGI to create many of its characters and monsters since 2011. One could make a fairly easy argument that the clearly fake creatures (such as the above dragon) add to the overall charm of the series, but we simply have to include Once Upon A Time on this list for its lofty ambitions and its poor execution.

Pretty Little Liars' Capitol

Of all the entries on this list, this one stands out simply because of how wholly unnecessary it was. During a particularly notable scene during the Season 6 midseason premiere of the series, Spencer Hasting sits down on a bench outside of the U.S. Capitol in D.C.. Rather than film on location, Pretty Little Liars opted to use a green screen to project the iconic building behind the character. As you can very clearly tell from that photo: it didn't work. The shot received the ire of fans almost immediately, and viewers even demanded that the series reshoot the scene in order to fix it for future audiences.

The Entire Sharknado Franchise

Last but not least, we come to the king of all bad TV CGI: the endearingly terrible Sharknado franchise. Over the course of the entire made-for-TV series, the Sharknado films have lived and died by terrible special effects that don't even come close to portraying real sharks or real massacres. That said, unlike the rest of the entries on this list, it's pretty clear that the Sharknado TV films aren't trying to convince you that the sharks are real. They look like they're rendered for the graphics on a Playstation 2, and we wouldn't have it any other way. Never change, Sharknado; we love you for this.

After seven seasons, Pretty Little Liars is finally ending its successful run. The original Freeform series has indulged in plenty of mysteries over the years, as its cast of young women found themselves in one horrible situation after another. With only 10 episodes left to go and about a dozen questions still left unanswered, fans are reasonably worried that Pretty Little Liars may end up not addressing all of its leftover mysteries. Well worry not, because creator and showrunner I. Marlene King has assured that everything will be answered by the time the credits of the finale roll.

Excited fans in attendance of the Pretty Little Liars panel at Paleyfest were given quite the treat (via Deadline). Cast members Ashley Benson, Tyler Blackburn, Shay Mitchell, Andrea Parker, Janel Parrish, Sasha Pieterse and Ian Harding, as well as King and executive producer Joseph Dougherty were on hand to tease what was in store for the final 10 episodes of Season 7. Being a suspenseful mystery spanning seven seasons, there's currently a LOT still lift hanging in the air. As a "thanks for watching," the show will answer as much as it possibly can while providing a concrete ending for each character.

Well, that must feel pretty good for fans! Not every TV show feels as obliged as Pretty Little Liars to put a neat little bow on all its mysteries by the time the show ends. Lost had a habit of answering questions with more questions, but that worked for that specific show. I doubt PLL fans would be thrilled to be left in the dark -- especially when the show still has so many unresolved plots. For instance, who's Uber A/A.D.?; Who killed Sara Harvey?; Who killed Charlotte DiLaurentis?; How is Mary Drake Spencer's real mother?; Who or what caused Toby and Yvonne's car accident?; and so on and so on.

It's becoming more and more common for networks to cancel shows but to do it in a way that is less shocking than in previous years on TV. The best way to accomplish this is to cancel a series and then give it one more season to finish out the story. This has several positives. It means that the creative team gets the chance to finish out a series in the way they wanted and it means that fans are not blindsided when their favorite show gets cancelled. Still, it can be hard to keep track of what is ending and what is not. To help you out, we've compiled a handy list of the shows that we know--so far--are ending in 2017. Take a look. And do expect more cancellations to come down the pipeline as the TV season wears on.

Grimm, NBC

Grimm had a nice run on NBC on Friday nights. The series has really been the show that has ushered in an era of supernatural content on network TV at the end of the week, as Friday nights are now home to The Vampire Diaries and Sleepy Hollow. However, its ratings have dwindled over the years and last season NBC renewed the series for the 2016-2017 season, cancelling the drama at the same time. Give the show a watch while you still can, as its looking more and more likely NBC is going to have to blow up its Friday night lineup next year.

Bones, Fox

Unlike a lot of the shows on this list, Fox's Bones has been on the air for years and years. In fact, many fans have been on the page that the show hit its peak years ago, but Fox has still been rolling out new episodes, even after the ratings started going down. Last TV season, the show was moved to Fridays in what we thought was the final death knell. However, Fox surprised us with a renewal--albeit for a shortened season--and the last set of episodes is airing this winter. Catch the final episodes on Tuesday nights.

Bloodline, Netflix

Up until recently, Netflix was not really known for cancelling shows. Sure, Lilyhammer was axed at one point, but really most Netflix shows have been going strong and continually getting renewed, some of them for many seasons. Then Bloodline, a critically acclaimed but seemingly under-watched program, got cancelled. The good news? The series was also given one final season to wrap up its story. Expect new episodes later in 2017.

Black Sails, Starz

Another show that airs in the winter, Black Sails was the first in a string of more prominent originals to hit the schedule on Starz. While Black Sails had a big splash at Comic-Con and was noted for its larger budget, it hasn't been the ratings bringer like Power and Outlander have. Season 3 of the drama began the long journey of wrapping up the Treasure Island prequel, and it wasn't a huge shock when Starz stated the show would be ending after Season 4. Catch the final set of episodes starting in January.

Turn: Washington's Spies, AMC

AMC has a lot of well-received shows that haven't really earned high ratings. The period drama Turn is one of them. Despite sporting Jamie Bell and Angus MacFadyen and having a really cool premise about a Revolutionary War spy ring, the show has never been a big winner in total viewers. Turn is getting 10 more episodes to tell its story in 2017, but that will be the end for the series. We'll let you know as soon as the network gets the final series on the calendar.

Girls, HBO

HBO's Girls is one of the comedies that has put the network on the map in terms of original comedies, along with Veep and Silicon Valley. While new seasons of Veep and Silicon Valley are on the way, Girls will be wrapping up with a final season that is starting this weekend. The show will make us laugh and make us cringe for a few more times before it finally says sayonara on the cable network. Not too shabby for the show that figured out the line in terms of sex scenes that HBO will accept.

Pretty Little Liars

Pretty Little Liars has been a bit of a phenomenon during its run on ABC Family and the brand new Freeform. The show has an extremely avid fanbase and that has propelled it into a long run. However, Freeform has been reworking its lineup since the network changed names, and Pretty Little Liars will be ending in 2017. Catch the delicious drama while you still can.

Longmire, Netflix

Longmire possibly has my favorite trajectory of any series on this list. Originally, the show aired on A&E, where it was pretty popular. So popular, in fact, that we were all really surprised when the network opted to cancel the show. However, fans loved the show enough to petition to keep it, and Longmire is one of the rare times that has worked out. While the show is ending this season, on Netflix it was able to be a little more experimental and darker in tone with its content and the pick-up has been really great. We hope to see the show end on a high note.

Bates Motel, A&E

Bates Motel is one of A&E's first scripted originals, and it certainly survived for longer than Longmire managed to on the network. The show will be ending after Season 5 and production recently wrapped on the drama. However, Bates Motel will most definitely be going out with a bag, ending with Marian Crane and a lot of memorable moments from the original Psycho film. Tune in when the show returns on February 20.

Halt and Catch Fire, AMC

Another under-watched AMC drama, Halt and Catch Fire has followed a ragtag group of rebels as they've tried to navigate the world of business and technology in the early age of computers and the World Wide Web. AMC has a knack for deep writing and great performances and it all can be found in Halt and Catch Fire, which will sadly be ending after its fourth season. Expect new episodes to land in the schedule sometime later in 2017.

Workaholics, Comedy Central

Workaholics has always had a small niche fanbase, and the show managed to earn an impressive seven seasons with that small audience. Unfortunately, when Season 7 was announced, so was the show's cancellation. You can catch _Workaholic_s' swan song on Comedy Central right now, as the final set of episodes is airing on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET.

Orphan Black, BBC America

Tatiana Maslany has played multiple characters on BBC America's Orphan Black for four seasons, and a fifth is on its way. It's got to be exhausting to play multiple clones, and now that the girl has some awards nominations under her belt, she's really done all she can do to put the sci fi series onto the map. While not a huge ratings bringer, the show has developed an avid following over time and will really be missed. There's even a sweepstakes to appear in the final season, should that interest you.

Episodes, Showtime

Episodes is just the show that keeps on giving. I've thought the Matt LeBlanc starrer had ended a couple of times, especially as it has been off of the air since 2015. However, it has been renewed for a fifth season and we will be getting one final set of episodes sometime in 2017. (There's probably an Episodes episodes joke in there somewhere but I just can't quite reach those comedy heights, or maybe lows.) We'll let you know as soon as the show is back.

The Vampire Diaries, The CW

The CW has a track record of airing some shows well beyond their peak. In fact, if they do well at the network, they tend to keep airing for a long, long time. The Vampire Diaries has chugged along ever since Nina Dobrev left the series in 2015. At the end of the network TV season, however, TVD will be wrapping up. There is some light at the end of the tunnel. Elena will be making her comeback before then.

Switched At Birth, Freeform

Switched At Birth's trajectory has been a little confusing. By all rights, this show should have ended already, but then the cabler kept it off the schedule for some time; in fact, the last set of episodes aired in 2015. The show finally hit the schedule in January and will be wrapping up its storyline soon. It's cancellation is part of an overall push by Freeform to take its programming in a new directions. That's why ABC Family became Freeform in the first place.

The Strain, FX

There was a time when supernatural dramas were all the rage on TV and at the movies. While vampires are less of the rage these days, there are a few shows on the air that are still distinctly supernatural dramas, including FX's The Strain. The show has introduced us to the Strigoi and a rich world with lots of political nuance. The show has had plans from the start regarding where it wanted to end; however, ratings have only give The Strain one more season to catch up. Stayed tuned for reactions from CinemaBlend!

The Leftovers, HBO

Lost's Damon Lindelof gave us an HBO series that is deep and dark and emotional with The Leftovers, but that is still filled with the twists and confusion we've come to expect from a Lindelof production. For many reasons, this one didn't take off as a ratings winner, but it's a drama that's totally worth catching up on, even though you might be an emotional mess afterwards. Catch the final season this April.

Pretty Little Liars fans know a little something about waiting, seeing as how we're on the back end of an eight-month hiatus splitting its seventh and final season in half. But something we might not be waiting for is a follow-up role for Pretty Little Liars' Lucy Hale, who has already lined up a new project that sounds pretty dark and awesome in dramedy Life Sentence, which has been picked up to pilot by The CW.

Life Sentence will be a one-hour comedic drama in which Lucy Hale will play a young woman who gets the awful diagnosis that she is going to die from cancer. Then cut to some point in the future, when said woman is then given the news that she isn't actually going to die, which should bring about happiness, right? Well, this character will have a lot of uncomfortable experiences in her future, thanks to the decisions she made when she was living each day as if it would be her last.

A solid concept for a series aimed at young people, that's for sure. Who wouldn't love to have their id be allowed to run rampant thanks to the knowledge of how temporary one's lease on life is? There's a good chance Lucy Hale's character will have spent a shit-ton of money on credit cards she can't pay back, as well as burning a lot of personal bridges with people who wronged her in the past. It'll be interesting to see how far on the comedy side this project skews.

Perhaps the creative team can answer that. According to Variety, executive producing Life Sentence will be Bill Lawrence, best known for hit comedies like Scrubs and Cougar Town, and Lawrence's frequent collaborator Jeff Ingold. It was written by Erin Cardillo and Richard Keith, who created the mostly forgettable CW comedy Significant Mother, and have most recently written and produced for Fuller House. So it would seem like there's more to laugh at here than get bummed out about. Which is good, because I'd like to see Lucy Hale get to show off more of her quirky and silly side.

With Pretty Little Liars coming to a close this year, Lucy Hale will have her entire career opened up for the first time since 2010. Her last scripted TV appearance was on Freeform's Baby Daddy in 2014, and she was the host in New Orleans for this year's New Year's Rockin' Eve. On the film side, she's got the upcoming dramatic comedy Dude from director Olivia Milch. Expect other big things to come whether this pilot gets picked up or not.

For now, of course, there's no sign of what will happen to Life Sentence in the future, but I'm sure Pretty Little Liars fans will start up a hashtag revolution to get the show on the air. The Freeform drama heads into its final ten episodes on Tuesday, April 18. While we wait, head to our midseason premiere schedule to see what is coming to your TVs in the near future.

Incredibly, we've nearly gotten to the holidays and the big five networks have yet to cancel an underperforming freshman series, although episode orders for shows like Conviction and Pure Genius have been cut. Regardless, there are still quite a few shows that have already been slated to end this TV season, and if you want to know which shows you are going to have to say goodbye to, we've compiled them into this easy-to-read list.

Please note that this list excludes shows that will technically be ending next TV season. So if you're wondering where some shows you know are ending are at, like Longmire, they may not be ending until the next season rolls around. But, as usual, let us know about any we may have missed!

Grimm

Grimm was a steady Friday night series on NBC for years, airing opposite a slew of shows that were quickly cancelled, including Constantine and Dracula. However, over the last couple of seasons, the ratings for the drama faltered a bit, leading NBC to both cancel the drama and push it back to midseason. The final set of episodes will hit the schedule in 2017, starting on Friday, January 6.

Black Sails

Starz kicked off its modern programming slate with the launch of Black Sails four seasons ago. Over time, Black Sails has become one of the most exciting and best written programs on television, one that has been highly ignored by critics. The pirate-based drama will be ending after its next airing at midseason, but it will be remembered as the show that helped launch Starz into a new era of quality originals. Catch its final season starting on Sunday, January 29.

Pretty Little Liars

Pretty Little Liars has already aired the first half of its final season, which has made its cancellation a little bit confusing. If you are a fan, don't fret, there's still a half season of the Freeform drama left to air. The final set of episodes are expected to hit the schedule this coming April, and some of the episodes are coming with grave titles like "Farewell, My Lovely" and "Till Death Do Us Part." I don't anticipate this one going out on a totally happy note.

Duck Dynasty

Just a few scant years ago, Duck Dynasty was one of the highest-rated reality programs ever. It also helped put A&E on the map in terms of original programming and presumably made the network a lot of money. Recently, the whole Duck Dynasty clan announced the show will be ending after the upcoming Season 11, which will hit the schedule in early 2017.

Bones

Bones has been on the air for a long time. While there are a few shows---including the original NCIS---that have been on the air for longer, it's still prepping for Season 12, which is a long time to be on the air. While Bones was widely expected to be cancelled at the end of last season, it earned a Hail Mary pass from Fox, which is allowing the show to wrap up in a way that will hopefully give fans closure. New episodes will hit the schedule on Tuesday, January 3.

Bloodline

Netflix is relatively new to the original programming game, and the subscription streaming service has not cancelled very many shows. One exception would be Bloodline, the well-received family drama filled with mystery and murder. Bloodline will get a third season before it goes off of the air. In the past, episodes have aired in the spring, and we'll let you know as soon as Netflix gives the show a final season premiere date.

Girls

Girls has long been a polarizing series on HBO. Those who love it really love it and those who hate it are often openly scathing in their critiques. The Lena Dunham-penned drama is finally ending, much to peoples' happiness/chagrin. But not before one final set of episodes hit the schedule. You can catch Girls Season 6 when it begins airing on Sunday, February 12.

Hand of God

While Netflix has been less fond of cancelling its originals, Amazon's slate has been more of a mixed bag. There was a lot of notice surrounding the launch of a new series starring Sons of Anarchy actor Ron Perlman, but Hand of God apparently didn't pan out when the numbers were considered. The show is getting a second season, which is better than other programs like Mad Dogs have done, but it will officially be done after Season 2. Since Season 1 hit the schedule back in the fall of 2015, you would think Season 2 would have already happened, but we're still waiting on a premiere date, which is expected to be scheduled in 2017.

Bates Motel

For a while, A&E had a pretty good thing going between originals Bates Motel and Longmire, plus reality shows like Duck Dynasty. By the end of this TV season, all of those shows will have disappeared from the lineup. (Longmire was cancelled and moved to Netflix a couple of seasons ago.) Bates Motel will return for a fifth and final season in 2017, thanks to getting a two-season renewal a couple of years ago, but it will be ending after that. If other seasons are any indication, it's likely we'll see the show hit the schedule sometime in March.

The Vampire Diaries

I honestly thought The Vampire Diaries would end after Nina Dobrev left the series and again when it was having ratings issues and was bumped to Fridays last season. However, the long-running vampire drama hung on and was rewarded with an eighth and final season, which started airing in October. You can catch new episodes on Friday nights over at the CW.

Streaming services have given TV fans plenty of options for binge-watching content, but there's still a certain thrill in watching great shows live as they air. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to tell the great shows from the terrible shows until a few seasons have aired; by that point, plots may have progressed too far for any new viewers to jump right into the action. Even shows that open each episode with a "Previously on" can't always give enough context to catch anybody up from the beginning.

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is a crazy comedy the revolves around the shenanigans of a group of shameless alcoholics in their Philly bar. The show has evolved over the years to stay fresh as season after season passes. The world would really be a much less hilarious place if not for the Lethal Weapon 5 subplot or the Nightman Cometh musical extravaganza or Charlie Day dancing around in a green body suit. Always Sunny finished Season 11 in early 2016, and it's already been renewed through Season 14. Catching up now would really be an investment in a funnier future.

Bates Motel

Bates Motel is a must-see horror series that has taken the premise of the iconic Psycho film and expanded it into an ongoing show that is as compelling as it is chilling. Norman Bates and his mom Norma run a small motel in Oregon. Their lives are anything but peaceful as Norman's mental state becomes dangerously unstable, and Norma is willing to go to some unnerving lengths to keep Norman safe and close. Bates Motel has finished four seasons, with the fifth and final set to debut in 2017. There's plenty of time to catch up on Netflix before the next set of episodes hits the airwaves.

Shameless

Shameless is a dramedy that follows the stories of a family in Chicago that struggles - and generally fails - to function. The series is led by William H. Macy as the single alcoholic father of six children, all of whom have problems of their own. Episodes range from pretty dark to mostly hilarious to surprisingly steamy. Shameless has aired six seasons so far, and a Season 7 is on the way. The premiere will air on Sunday, October 2 at 9 p.m., so newbies won't necessarily need to binge-watch to catch up in time for Season 7.

Better Call Saul

Better Call Saul is a spinoff prequel of Breaking Bad, which is really reason enough to give the series a try. Breaking Bad was pretty awesome, and its spinoff is a witty further look at some of the most interesting side characters from Walt and Jesse's many meth misadventures. Bob Odenkirk is fantastic with the drama as well as the comedy. Better Call Saul has already been renewed for a Season 3. If the show continues its trend from Seasons 1 and 2, we should expect Season 3 to hit the airwaves in February 2017.

Pretty Little Liars

Pretty Little Liars is a mystery thriller aimed at teens, but it's pretty addictive for folks of all ages. The titular pretty liars are the former members of a clique that fell apart after the death of their queen bee Alison. Clues emerge that Alison's death may have been more scandalous than anybody guessed, and the girls are plagued by messages sent by a mystery antagonist known only as "A." A uses intimate information about the four friends to force them into unsavory actions. Pretty Little Liars is set to end after Season 7, the first half of which is currently airing. The second half will debut in winter 2017.

The Walking Dead is the phenomenally popular zombie apocalypse thriller that has people everywhere talking on Monday mornings between October and April each year. A group of survivors led by former sheriff's deputy Rick Grimes struggles to survive after the zombie virus sweeps the nation. They must cross major moral lines if they want to live in a world with few allies and lots of ways to die. It's not the happiest or easiest show to watch, but it's awfully engaging. There's no end in sight for the series that draws millions of viewers each week. Season 7 of The Walking Dead debuts on October 23 at 9 p.m. ET.

Rectify

Rectify is a drama all about the wrongfully-convicted Daniel Holden in the years after his exoneration. He spent nearly two decades behind bars for rape and murder; adjusting to life outside of prison when he had been a resident on death row takes its toll. Fans of Netflix's Making a Murderer series might enjoy Rectify for the fictionalized story that bears some serious similarities to the real life Steven Avery case, and viewers who enjoy some suspense with their drama may find themselves on the edges of their seats. The fourth and final season premieres in fall 2016.

Archer

Archer is an animated spy comedy that spoofs James Bond tropes to perfection. It's not a show that's necessarily for everyone, though, due to pretty frequent crudeness. Still, the running gags and continuity are enough to bring laughs in every episode. Sterling Archer is a suave spy who likes to drink and loves the ladies, but he also has mommy issues made worse by the fact that his mom runs the spy agency where he works. Archer lives in a danger zone that has been known to result in everything from ants to tinnitus. The series was renewed for a whopping three seasons after Season 7. Season 8 will debut in January 2017.

Turn

Turn is a period drama that tells the tale of the Culper Ring of spies that turned the tide of the Revolutionary War. It's not exactly a documentary of everything that happened in history, but the excitement of 18th century espionage is enough to justify suspending disbelief. The show has recently been cancelled. Luckily, Turn will get a fourth and final season in 2017 to finish the story of the Culper Ring and bring the Revolutionary War to an end. If Season 4 follows the trend of Seasons 1 - 3, we can count on Turn returning in April and running until June next year.

Z Nation

Z Nation is pretty much the other post-apocalyptic zombie drama, and there are some similarities to the much bigger Walking Dead. Fortunately, Z Nation is different enough from the juggernaut AMC series that even Walking Dead fans can watch without feeling like they've seen it already. This zombie apocalypse story chronicles the cross-country journey of a team of survivors as they try to transport a man whose apparent immunity to the zombie virus may hold the key to a vaccine. The first two seasons have run from September to December, so any folks looking to catch up at a moderate pace may need to get a move on. A Season 3 has already been ordered, so we should be getting more Z Nation sooner rather than later.
