It seems like the Resident Evil Revelations games have been released for as many consoles as Skyrim and Minecraft. Now, we can add the hottest new console to the list, but how does the came compare on the Switch? It's...it's fine. It's pretty much the same game that you've probably played in at least one other place, assuming that you have a particular love for Resident Evil games anymore. While the Nintendo Switch version adds a couple new bells and whistles, it's unlikely to be enough to draw in anybody who wasn't interested enough to play it in one of its previous incarnations.

While the Resident Evil franchise seems to have found new life via the first person/VR experience of Resident Evil 7, the two Revelations titles were Capcom's first attempts at recapturing the horror route of the franchise that started to get lost in the two previous numbered entries in the series. While both titles are available separately for the Nintendo Switch, they're similar enough that it makes sense to review them together.

The plot of the games is your standard Resident Evil story. It's mostly gibberish that only holds together as far as is necessary to put characters you're familiar with, like Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield, in dark and dreary places where zombies, or at least zombie-ish monsters, jump out and try and eat you. Both games play through in an episodic format, though only the second Revelations game was actually released that way. You explore the dungeon of choice, picking up ammo and health and trying to use as little of each in order to survive to the end.

The Revelations games certainly feel like classic Resident Evil, which is their key selling point for fans of the original parts of the series. The major difference is that rather than using a fixed location camera and tank controls, where you can move or shoot, but not both at once, Revelations shifts to an over the shoulder camera that allows you to aim your gun and move at the same time. While this is mostly a welcome updating, it does mean that when there's a monster sneaking up behind you, you won't necessarily know it until it's eating your face. On the one hand, this is frustrating, but then again, it does amp up the tension.

The biggest addition to these games is the ability to use the Nintendo Switch motion controls. By putting a Joy-Con in each hand you can use one to aim your gun at the screen. While this is supposed to give you finer accuracy, I found it to be endlessly frustrating. Whenever you draw a gun your targeting reticle defaults to the middle of the screen, meaning that if you don't already have your arm set in an appropriate, and comfortable, position, you end up swinging your arm into weird places in order to aim where you want. While this could probably be overcome with a bit of practice, I found that it was just easier to quit and go back to a Pro Controller.

The frustrating motion controls are mostly annoying because my favorite version of Resident Evil 4 is the version released on the Nintendo Wii. I found the motion controls there to be clean and precise. The Wiimote felt like I was aiming a gun. It never feels like you're aiming a Joy-Con here, just like you're swinging it around.

The episodic format of the titles certainly lends itself to portable gaming, and the Switch does a solid job here. There are some motion control options here as well, but I found them even more unwieldy than the Joy-Cons separately. But in a standard configuration, Revelations works well enough. The original game was a 3DS title first, after all, so it lends itself to being played on the go.

Also, be aware that Resident Evil Revelations 2 will eat almost the entire internal memory of your Switch. if you haven't invested in an SD card yet, you may want to put one on your Christmas list.

If you're a fan of the old school survival horror of Resident Evil but somehow haven't given these games a try yet, there's no reason not to play them on the Nintendo Switch. Having said that, motion controls alone aren't enough of a reason to give this one a second look.

This review was done with a Nintendo Switch version of the title provided by the publisher.

Both Resident Evil: Revelations 1 and Resident Evil: Revelations 2 are coming to the Switch and the company showcased the motion controls in action with a new trailer.

The trailer was posted on the official Resident Evil YouTube channel, featuring two whole minutes of gameplay, and demonstrating what Nintendo Switch owners can expect from the game when it becomes available at the end of the month on November 28th.

The trailer starts by first giving a brief overview of the game's thrills and then it moves into the different modes of play available on the Nintendo Switch, including playing in TV mode, portable mode, and tabletop mode.

You can use the controls in the standard dual-analog position, or on the side of the Switch, or as individual Joy-Cons in the wireless motion-controlled setting.

If you like playing games the standard way, you can use the Joy-Cons on the controller dock and play using the standard method just like you've always played Resident Evil games. This means the left and right analog control the character and the view, while the face buttons allow you to interact with the environment, and the triggers allow you to aim and shoot.

Alternatively, the video showcases how you can use the right Joy-Con to aim at the TV or the Switch (if it's in tabletop mode) and press the trigger fire. The video suggests using the wrist-straps and the gyroscopic aiming to fire weapons and perform attacks. One highlight of the Nintendo Switch is that the Joy-Con motion sensors are about as accurate as the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift's wireless motion controllers, which absolutely surprised me after getting in time with the devices. So, for those of you worried about the accuracy of the motion detection in a game like Resident Evil: Revelations, I can vouch for the Joy-Cons being a great alternative for motion-based aiming.

You can also use both Joy-Cons to reload your weapons. Performing a reload-style motion with your left and right hand will allow you to reload your weapons. The same applies for performing melee attacks, where you can swipe and swing in the direction of the screen to perform knife strikes and melee attacks.

You can also fend off attackers by shaking the Joy-Cons rapidly to get them off your character.

Alternatively, you can separate the Joy-Cons and play co-op mode using only one set of Joy-Con controllers in Resident Evil: Revelations, which is great for people who want to play local co-op.

The Switch also has support for Amiibos, so you can unlock additional bonus items. This is in addition to additional costumes, Raid Mode stages, and playable characters.

The mode sees players using the Switch's Joy-Cons in Resident Evil: Revelations to shoot zombies and other monsters using a reticule on the screen as they flood down from the top of the screen.

The mini-game ranks a player's combos while the timer counts up and the score is tallied. The objective is to keep as many of the zombies from reaching the bottom of the screen as possible.

The mini-game is exclusive for the Nintendo Switch version of the game. However, Capcom didn't just add it into the game for no reason. The developers actually decided to use it as a way for gamers to rack up high score and then earn BP. What good is the BP for? Well, you can use it in Resident Evil: Revelations' Raid Mode to help net you some extra supplies.

But, Capcom wasn't done with special goodies for the Nintendo Switch version of the games. There's also a special hidden mini-game in Resident Evil: Revelations 2 featuring Barry Burton.

The 8-bit, NES-inspired, retro throwback sees players running around as Barry as he attempts to find his little girl located on a mysterious and hidden island. The mini-game is called Ghouls 'n Homunculi, mirrored after the classic Ghost 'n Goblins.

The objective is to jump over and dodge enemy projectiles while making your way through the forest. You can jump, crouch, and throw your own projectiles at enemies. Just like in the other mini-game, you can collect gold, BP sacks, and Moira figurines.

If you get hit, however, Barry will lose all his armor (and clothes) and have to make his way through the level in just his underwear.

It's a fairly silly little mini-game but definitely adds to the overall appeal for Resident Evil: Revelations and Resident Evil: Revelations 2 on the Nintendo Switch. This is especially relevant given that the mini-games let you unlock goods that you can use in the Raid Mode, so they serve more of a purpose than just being novelty additions to the game.

Both games will re-release on the Nintendo Switch starting next month on November 28th.

Over on the Capcom Unity blog an update was posted comparing the new generation remake of Resident Evil to the older generation remake of Resident Evil. It seems kind of confusing, but yes, Capcom is remaking a remake and re-releasing it for the eighth generation home consoles.

Originally, Resident Evil Remake came out for the GameCube back in 2002. I skipped on it because it was basically just a better looking version of the original. However, Capcom decided to remake that version for Nintendo's Wii in 2008 (this was back when the Wii was kicking butt and taking names and everyone wanted to make something for it). It was basically just a slightly improved version of the GameCube rendition with a stronger focus on utilizing the Wii-mote.

Well, fast forward to 2014 and Capcom announces that they are remaking the remake that was based on a remake. As stupid as that sounds, it's a very sad truth.

Resident Evil Remake will be the third iteration re-release of a remade game, based on the original Resident Evil that came out back in 1996 for the PSX and PC.

Capcom provided screenshots comparing the 2008 version from the Wii, with what gamers will be able to experience on the PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC next year.

In the examples above you can see how the biggest changes come in the form of resolution (obviously), a conversion of the game into a newer lighting engine, and higher resolution textures.

It's kind of weird but it actually looks like the geometry in the map has actually stayed the same, and that the vertex lighting and texture mapping help mask it.

The images below mostly focus on the character upgrades and the lighting that properly reflects on those characters.

Unsurprisingly, it looks as if Capcom lifted the models from the newer Resident Evil titles, or rather, the likelihood is that they lifted the old map from the 2008 Resident Evil and dumped it into the Resident Evil 6 rendering pipeline... or at least, that's what I would do. Given the way the contrast and hues are accentuated by a different lighting engine, I would hazard a guess that that's what they did.

The last set of comparisons mostly just highlight the upgraded texture maps, and further highlights the game's move into native 1080p for the newer gen consoles.

You can check out the rest of the screenshots in the section below or see a sliding scale extension over on the Capcom Unity blog to spot the differences up close and in real-time.

Resident Evil Remake is due for release in 2015 for home consoles and PC.

In the video, the development team talks about how Revelations is a return to Resident Evil's roots.

For Revelations, Capcom wanted the game to have more survival horror elements than other recent RE releases. The developers set out to scare the player more. Ammunition is once again a major concern, and players can expect a healthy amount of puzzles and investigation.

All that being said, there's still a lot of action. Revelations employs the third-person camera from recent games and allows players to fire on the move. The game even comes with a co-op Raid Mode in which players have to mow down waves of enemies. Capcom still feels that this is a survival horror game, though, imbued with the "true spirit" of the older RE titles.

Revelations debuted on the 3DS in early 2012.
Today Capcom confirmed that Resident Evil Revelations is coming to Xbox 360 and PS3 as rumored. However, those aren't the only platforms that will receive the survival horror game. Capcom is also porting the game to the Wii U and PC.

The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions aren't a big shock. They were outed by a ratings board and Achievements list. However, this is the first time we've heard anything about Wii U or PC editions of the game. Glad that the world still has some surprises in it.

Revelations was first released in January 2012 for the 3DS. The game's campaign took place between Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5. The newly formed Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance needs to combat a terrorist group called Il Veltro that is threatening to unleash bio-organic weapons across the world. Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield and their respective partners will battle their way through a cruise ship and city full of mutants.

The console and PC editions of the game will obviously look a lot better than their 3DS predecessor. Capcom is promising HD graphics and improved lighting. You can see these features for yourself in the new screenshots below. The visual upgrades will be accompanied by remastered sound. Gameplay improvements include a new difficulty mode and a "terrifying new enemy."

The single-player/co-op Raid Mode from the 3DS version will be returning as well, albeit with some improvements. Players will complete standalone mission to earn XP and upgrades. The updated Raid Mode brings new weapons and skillsets, and lets players take on the role of Hunk and other series veterans.

Resident Evil Revelations will launch on consoles and PC on May 21st in North America. The European launch will follow on May 24th. Starting on January 24th, you can pre-register at Residentevil.net to get access to Revelations-themed content. Capcom will release new content for the game through that site after the game's launch.

Console gamers may not have to wait long for their next Resident Evil game. The 3DS title Resident Evil Revelations has been rated for the Xbox 360 and PS3 by the Game Rating Board of South Korea.

Revelations was first released on the 3DS in January. Its story took place between the events of Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5. Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield and other BSAA agents work to stop a bioterrorist organization called Il Veltro. The game also featured a Raid mode in which players fought off waves of enemies.

RE: Revelations' campaign was sort of a throwback. It had more in common with the early survival horror RE games than the more recent, action-oriented entries. There really aren't many survival horror games on consoles nowadays so I think Revelations would get an enthusiastic greeting from PS3/360 gamers.

This is the first time we've reported on anything from the Game Ratings Board so I'm not sure what their track record is like. However, the ESRB and other ratings authorities are often a source of news about upcoming ports. They tend to release this information before the companies themselves have a chance to do so.

Capcom has yet to comment about the possibility of a Revelations port. Perhaps this leak will force them to make an announcement, though.

The reason Resident Evil is moving farther and farther away from its horror roots is because Capcom feels like the horror-survival genre is a niche genre. Capcom has been monitoring the sales of Call of Duty and they feel like Resident Evil can achieve the same numbers if it follows in Call of Duty's footsteps.

In an interview with GamaSutra [via Side Mission], Resident Evil: Revelations producer, Masachika Kawata , mentioned that gamers are craving more action than horror-suspense...

Especially for the North American market, I think the series needs to head in that [action-oriented] direction," Kawata said. "[Resident Evil's primary games] need to be an extension of the changes made in Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5."RE4 started in that direction, and RE5 kept going in that direction. And I think that, especially for the North American market, we need to keep going in that direction and take it a step further. And that's exactly one of the reasons that Revelations is the way it is."

Furthermore, he believes that the niche market is too small to garner maximum sales revenue. It really has nothing to do with an original, immersive or true-to-form gameplay experience. Kawata went on to say that...

"Looking at the marketing data [for survival horror games] … the market is small, compared to the number of units Call of Duty and all those action games sell. A 'survival horror' Resident Evil doesn't seem like it'd be able to sell those kind of numbers.""I can't really speak for Resident Evil 6, but I don't think that it necessarily has to go all the way in that [action-heavy] direction, the Call of Duty direction. It doesn't have to be a straight up shooter. But my impression is that Resident Evil 4 and 5 aren't shooters, per se."

Resident Evil 4's gameplay was a great mix of action and horror. The atmosphere and set-pieces were very engaging and the enemies were threatening and definitely horror-inducing (Garrador, anyone?). However Resident Evil 4 didn't manage to sell enough SKUs to garner more than $1 billion in sales revenue in under 17 days like Call of Duty. According to Shack News Resident Evil 5 managed a very respectable 5.4 million SKUs sold, but it still pales in comparison to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. And in today's video game industry climate, sales numbers speak louder than creativity.

Given that Kawata isn't working on Resident Evil 6 it's possible that the other Capcom team could forego the easy-route and actually focus on bringing the game back to its roots. However, it's also possible that the higher-ups are using the "horror roots" maxim as a marketing ploy to build interest in the game, all the while packaging it as a third-person Call of Duty with a few extra zombies layered on top. We won't know until we get to see (or play) more of Resident Evil 6.

But what do you guys think: will the next Resident Evil go back to roots or will Capcom go full-darkside and aim to cash-in on the Call of Duty money-train?

Capcom announced today that Resident Evil: Revelations is currently available for the Nintendo 3DS at local and online retailers. You can pick up your copy and start enjoying some classic, claustrophobic, survival-horror gameplay right now.

The all-new game takes place between Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5. Players will be in control of four different characters trying to escape a cruise ship, and venture through an island floating on the sea. The game uses TV drama-style cut-backs to give players a sense of mystery and intrigue.

Capcom also listened to gamers and decided to bring the series back to its roots with more horror-themed elements. This means tight corridors, lots of pop-out moments, limited ammo and plenty of poorly lit rooms.

What's more is that new features have been added into the game, including the new Genesis Scanner, which enables players to scan bodies and objects for additional items, parts and bonuses. This is also how players will be able to acquire new upgrade parts for their weapons, which can be modified using the on-the-go workbench.

In addition to the main game, Capcom also included a little something-something for those who enjoyed the multiplayer so much in Resident Evil 5, it's called Raid Mode. In this mode players can either battle it out in timed events solo or with a friend with online or local co-op.

You can pick up a copy of Resident Evil: Revelations right now for $39.99, exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS. For further information on the game feel free to visit the Official Website.
