<dc:description>
The Background: Mike Reyes is the Senior Movie Contributor at CinemaBlend, though that title’s more of a guideline really. Passionate about entertainment since grade school, the movies have always held a special place in his life, which explains his current occupation. Writing in some way, shape, or form since fifth grade, Mike’s time at CinemaBlend started in 2014, when he was hired as a freelance writer. In 2019, Mr. Reyes became a full time fixture of the CB staff, a decision that the management still hotly debates to this very day, questioning whether it was “a good idea, or the best idea?” Mike graduated from Drew University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, but swore off of running for public office a long time ago. You can hear him on various podcasts, you just need to know where to look.

What He's Into: This is a tough question to answer, as Mike’s kind of into a lot of things. Most prominently, he is CinemaBlend’s James Bond expert, thanks to being raised with a healthy appreciation for the storied spy series and anything espionage related. Mike has several other specialized fields that he’s been passionate about since his early years. Among those interests are breaking down the ins and outs of time travel, studying and admiring Large Scale Aggressors, Titans, Kaiju, and dinosaurs; as well as detective work. Adjacent to his entertainment interests, Mr. Reyes enjoys the worlds of high end mens fashion (eyewear included), fine alcohol and cocktails, and the comforts of a good book or video game. If you ask nicely, he might even dip back into his experience as a singer, just for fun.

What He's Excited About Right Now: The continuing hunt for the new James Bond, any and all updates about how Adam Wingard and Dan Stevens are turning Godzilla vs. Kong 2 into a stealth sequel to The Guest, and the potential for Tron: Ares to somehow be the sequel Tron: Ascension was promised to be. Also, a good excuse to be sent on another theme park assignment, and anything Guillermo del Toro has cooking,
</dc:description>

Sometimes, we truly are our own harshest critics. Though not everyone learns this in the same manner as Free Guy's Ryan Reynolds apparently has, which is through an interview with his “evil twin,” Gordon. Even worse, this brutal lesson in self criticism, courtesy of a new ad Reynolds stars in, sees his supposed doppelgänger hitting a familiar nerve by calling him out on all of the body-swap movies he’s done in the past.

The real purpose of this ad was for Ryan Reynolds to announce that his marketing company, Maximum Effort, is merging with another advertising entity known as MNTN. But seeing this as a good opportunity to engage in marketing savvy, and good natured japery, Reynolds took to Instagram and resurrected an old joke to announce the happy news. Watch Ryan Reynolds beat himself up verbally, courtesy of that very ad:

A photo posted by  on

Cards on the table, Gordon’s not wrong with his assessment of Ryan Reynolds’ filmography. That’s not to say that he’s been officially assigned the title of “King of the Body-Swapping Movie,” but listen to that rundown of credits he lays out. Anyone who’s made The Change Up, Self/Less and Detective Pikachu would certainly find themselves in the running for that crown. But even the infamous R.I.P.D.comes into play, though whether or not that’s a true body-swapping film is something that can be debated by leading Reynolds scholars.

Just when you thought Ryan Reynolds wasn’t tortured enough after his recent duties in The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard literally required such treatment, the man behind the mask of the Deadpool series aimed that wit at himself yet again. Though “Gordon” seems to be walking the line of respect and insults rather well, especially considering he has a limited edition bottle of Aviation Gin sitting next to a cup of Hugh Jackman’s Laughing Man coffee. Which only furthers the body-swap gag, as there was that one time fans wanted Jackman and Reynolds to be the faces of the alleged Face/Off reboot.

Admittedly, body-swap jokes are a little familiar, which is why it’s even more hysterical that the Gordon Reynolds persona busted out some jokes about celebrity dating app Raya. You can imagine that Gordon would love to pull a Ben Affleck and connect with a fan, only to record a video claiming that he’s actually Ryan Reynolds. Hilarity ensues, and somehow Thanksgiving is even more awkward for these two halves of the same fictional coin.

It’s probably better for the world that Gordon Reynolds doesn’t exist, as an evil version of Ryan Reynolds’ marketing acumen and crowd pleasing showmanship would probably lead to some dark places. Or, it could lead to another body-swap movie, where Ryan and Gordon switch places, and only Blake Lively can tell the difference. For now, the world will have to settle for one Ryan Reynolds, who can be seen in The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, currently in theaters.

Up next: Ryan Reynolds Had An A+ Response After A Fan Claimed To Have Seen His Doppleganger

Now that Ryan Reynolds has partially taken over the world with the massive success of Deadpool, he can do damn well whatever he wants. One thing that the 39-year-old Canadian actor has a penchant for doing on screen is swapping bodies with other actors. He’s done it a number of times over the course of his career, including in the upcoming action thriller Criminal.

Maybe he has some self-esteem or identity issues, or perhaps, as an actor, he simply enjoys pretending to be other people and likes to up the ante by playing other people playing other people. With Criminal just dropping a trailer the other day, and with the success of Deadpool, we thought, what better time to take a look at the people Ryan Reynolds has swapped bodies with on screen.

Traylor Howard, Two Guys A Girl And A Pizza Place

Ryan Reynolds’ first time swapping bodies with a costar wasn’t on the big screen. Instead, it came in 1999 during an episode of the sitcom Two Guys a Girl and a Pizza Place. During the episode, "Halloween 2: Mind Over Body," his character, the simple-minded Mitch "Berg" Bergen, has his brain traded with Traylor Howard’s Sharon Carter by a mad scientist who lives in the basement of their apartment building. That’s going to happen sometimes, it’s unavoidable.

Jason Bateman, The Change-Up

Who knew that drunkenly peeing into a public fountain could have such life changing effects. Kingsley plays an aging billionaire tycoon who, when diagnosed with cancer, has his mind inserted into the body of Ryan Reynolds. If you’re getting on in years and your own body is breaking down, that’s a hell of an upgrade. Things take a turn, however, when Kingsley’s mind starts seeing Reynolds’ memories.

Kevin Costner, Criminal

Kevin Costner is also not a bad persona for an actor to take over. Sure, his star had dimmed some in recent years, but like Ben Kingsley, he, too, has some awards hardware and was once one of the biggest celebs in the world. In the new suspense thriller Criminal, Ryan Reynolds plays a dead CIA agent whose mind, memories, and skills are implanted into the body of a sociopathic criminal and death row inmate (Costner) in a last-ditch attempt to stop a nefarious plot that will kill tons of people. There’s also an insane cast with Gary Oldman, Gal Gadot, Tommy Lee Jones, Alice Eve, and Michael Pitt, maybe Reynolds can occupy one of them before the day is done.

When Despicable Me arrived in theaters in 2010, no one would have guessed that its funny little yellow sidekick characters would go on to land their own movie or that the movie would have the second highest animated opening ever.

Minions opened at a massive number one with $115 million, topping all other animated openings except 2007's Shrek the Third and its $121 million start.

That's notably higher than Inside Out's $90 million debut last month, but the question now is whether or not Minions can keep up in the long run. Inside Out dropped to third place this weekend but at $283 million it's on par to end up in the year's top five grossing movies.

Jurassic World continued its incredible climb, stopping just short of the $600 million mark this weekend. At $590 it's the fourth highest domestic grossing movie of all time, inching closer to Marvel's The Avengers' $623 million third place total.

Three other new movies arrived this weekend, but were unable to cobble $20 million between them. Horror flick The Gallows bowed in fifth place with $10 million. Ryan Reynold's latest effort, thriller Self/Less only banked $5 million for a weak eighth place. Ninth place went to Baahubali: The Beginning, an Indian movie now getting a release in the US. Its $3 million domestic debut sounds small, but in perspective with its small 236 venue release, its $15,000 per screen total is second only this weekend to Minions' $26,000 per screen total.

For the full weekend total, check out the chart below:

<div
The summer keeps on rolling on, and this week it seems as though there is something for everybody. With three movies on the docket, there’s something for the kids, the horror junkies and those who want to subject themselves to mid-summer sci-fi. It’s Minions, The Gallows and Self/Less.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at what This Rotten Week has to offer.

POSTER HERE, LINK IT TO PREVIEW PAGE

PREDICTION RATING HERE, LINK IT TO ROTTEN TOMATOES PAGE

Rotten Watch Prediction

73%

While watching the trailer for Minions, I found myself trying to think of who the titular yellow devels would serve in today’s modern world. Considering they need to aid the most despicable of masters in whatever scheme he/ she sees fit, there are a lot of contenders in our current world. Whether or not they would have the same kind of draw as Sandra Bullock and Jon Hamm, on the other hand, is another matter entirely.

Check out the history of the Minions with the trailer below:

In a prequel to Despicable Me, Minions retraces the steps and history of these little yellow, goggle-eyed squeakers. It seems they’ve spent their entire life span working (and failing) to serve the most evil entity in the world. Where they fail, apparently, is that they eventually accidentally off their master. From the trailer they’ve worked under T-Rex’s, Dracula, King Tut, Napoleon and a host of others. Now, we get their story (Pre-Gru) in how they came to America. It looks cute enough.

Pierre Coffin is back directing after helming both of the previous Despicable Me titles (81% and 74%, respectively). This latest looks to fall right in line with the first two. Early reviews have the flick sitting in the mid-70s already, with most critics enjoying the third installment. Some think it falls a little flat with the Minions (and their non-speaking communication) falling a little flat or running long, but that seems to be a minority opinion.

PREDICTION RATING HERE, LINK IT TO ROTTEN TOMATOES PAGE

Rotten Watch Prediction

52%

For many teenagers, high school is already terrifying – and one can imagine making a scary movie about a bunch of kids sneaking into a haunted school to reenact a horrible tragedy from 20 years ago only serves to accentuate the feelings of angst. Turning it into the scene of a scary crime only proves that the whole institution is a literal horror show. Murders or no murders.

See a prank gone wrong in the trailer for The Gallows below:

Producer Jason Blum knows a thing or two about the horror genre. Blumhouse Productions has put out flicks like Insidious, The Purge and the Paranormal Activity franchise. These flicks all rate high on the cling-on-to-your-date’s hand and close your eyes scale. All of the production house’s stuff hasn’t been great, but they’ve put out enough legit horror stuff to give The Gallows the benefit of the doubt. The trailer looks scary enough.

I’ve said for a while that I’m not a big horror film guy. I don’t seek the movies out and rarely put myself through the act of crapping my pants. So I won’t be seeing this flick. But for those that enjoy the genre, this film appears right up your alley. A group of teenagers seeks to put on a reenactment of school play in which a kid "accidentally" hangs himself. What ensues is the old "we can’t get out of here and someone/thing is picking us off one-by-one." Some of the imagery is startling with jostling camera work adding to the manic feeling of terror.

PREDICTION RATING HERE, LINK IT TO ROTTEN TOMATOES PAGE

Rotten Watch Prediction

19%

Having one’s consciousness planted into another body would have its positives and negatives. It’d be pretty rad to chuck one’s old noodle into the brain of say, a high school aged kid. With greater knowledge and experience, we’d all have a nice go of it heading back to school and teaching folks a thing or two. On the other hand, you wouldn’t get to look at your real self in the mirror every day… and that’s gotta get a bit creepy.

Take a look at another brain switch in the trailer for Self/Less below:

Unfortunately, I don’t think there’s much to get excited about with the "old man inhabits younger man’s body" story we’ve got going here. It feels very much like a been-there-done-that scenario. Sure, it’s a super-rich Ben Kingsley trying to stave off death for a little bit by scientifically/ medically transplanting his brain into Ryan Reynold’s frame, and sure things go well for a while, but I don’t want to shock you here - eventually he starts feeling some ill effects and things begin crumbling around him. Who saw that coming?

While I don’t know every single beat of the movie, the trailer leads me to believe we are about 90% there. Kingsley gets the switch. Things are super hot and awesome for a bit. He gets some of the old body’s memories back. The lab that performed the surgery has some ulterior motives (I know, shocking) and now it’s an external fight against the bad guys along with an internal fight between the two consciousnesses. The only thing we don’t see is the ending, though I suspect that’s predictable as well.

Director Tarsem Singh doesn’t leave a great deal to get excited for with some of his other work like Mirror Mirror (49%) and Immortals (35%) falling flat with critics. The newest threatens to come in as his lowest rated work yet. It’s at 17% through six reviews so far and I’d be shocked if it climbed much higher. We’ve seen this thing before.

This poll is no longer available.

I had a very solid week last time out with two wins in the critical prediction department. And though I’m happy to come close with a guess, it gives me no pleasure celebrating the score for Terminator: Genisys (Predicted: 37% Actual: 27%). As a big Terminator fan ,I’m always hoping this franchise turns itself around. Their last big hope, in my opinion, was The Sarah Connor Chronicles, but that got axed. This latest film doesn’t appear to do the franchise any favors in the "being good" department. What a shame. I suppose there’s still hope - the future isn’t written after all - but it’s been quite some time since we’ve had a lot to hang our Terminator hat on.

Meanwhile, Magic Mike XXL (Predicted: 65% Actual: 63%) was a near direct hit. I had a head start on this film, so I can’t take full, front on credit (that’s a male stripper joke, sort of) but it’s nice that I fell within in a few percentage points. Who knew a mini-franchise about male strippers could get this much critical traction? But alas, Channing Tatum seems to just melt everyone around him.

Next time around we see Trainwreck, and Ant-Man. It’s gonna be a Rotten Week!

                                                                <dc:description>
The Background: Eric Eisenberg is the Assistant Managing Editor at CinemaBlend. After graduating Boston University and earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism, he took a part-time job as a staff writer for CinemaBlend, and after six months, he was offered the opportunity to move to Los Angeles and take on a newly-created West Coast Editor position. Over a decade later, he's continuing to advance his interests and expertise. In addition to conducting filmmaker interviews and contributing to the news and feature content of the site, Eric also oversees the Movie Reviews section, writes the the weekend box office report (published Sundays), and is the site's resident Stephen King expert. He has two King-related columns: Adapting Stephen King (chronicling the fully history of King's works adapted for film and television) and The King Beat (a weekly roundup of the biggest news in the world of Stephen King books, movies, TV, and more)

What He’s Into: When he isn’t excitedly waiting for the lights to go down in the movie theater, Eric can often be found with his nose in a book, and it’s a safe bet that it is something by Stephen King or a comic book omnibus (Marvel or DC – he doesn’t discriminate). He is a long-suffering fan of the New York Mets, still waiting for them to win a championship in his lifetime, and the highs and lows of the experience have driven him subtly mad over the last twenty-five years. An avid collector of physical media and prop replicas, his apartment is the equivalent of the seed vault for movies, television, and comics.

What He’s Excited About Right Now: Life is a perpetual countdown clock waiting for the next Stephen King book/movie/TV show, but Eric is stoked for the renaissance of original horror, thrilled by the Phase 5 and 6 slates of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and already sick of waiting for Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Messiah.
</dc:description>

To start his career director Tarsem Singh made two feature films in 10 years, but as of late has found himself producing at a much faster clip. Immortals and Mirror Mirror came out in back to back years and now it appears as though he has already found not only his next project, but also possibly his next leading man.

Deadline reports that the filmmaker and the actor are now both in talks to make Selfless, a new thriller that's being co-produced by Endgame Entertainment and FilmDistrict. Based on an original script by Alex and David Pastor, who both wrote and directed the 2009 horror film Carriers with Chris Pine, the new movie centers on a wealthy old man who pays to have his mind transplanted into a younger body after discovering that he is dying. What he finds out too late, however, is that the body he takes over is that of a man who was murdered, and the body's killers are none too happy to see him walking around again. The protagonist is forced to go on the run and must work out who it is that's trying to kill him before it's too late.

Reynolds has been keeping busy of late, most recently lending his voice to one of the cavemen characters in DreamWorks Animation's The Croods. This summer he will be seen fighting alongside Jeff Bridges in the action comedy R.I.P.D., and lending his voice to a speed-obsessed snail in the animated Turbo. He most recently completed work on the Atom Egoyan-directed thriller Queen of the Night, which isn't expected in theaters until 2014.
