New York is still celebrating the Knicks’ victory, and so are the team's celebrity fans. Case in point, when Anne Hathaway appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers to promote the release of The Odyssey, the Knicks and their win came up. It was for a very good reason, too, as she addressed the hilarious and serendipitous fact that the Knicks went on quite the run after The Devil Wears Prada 2, which features a cameo from Knicks player Karl-Anthony Towns, came out.

Now, as the Knicks' playoff run was happening, there was constant talk about the fact that they kept winning, and that began right around the time The Devil Wears Prada 2 came out. Notably, Towns has a cameo in that movie, and Anne Hathaway is a massive Knicks fan. So, it’s all connected. So, I see why Seth Meyers asked The Princess Diaries star:

That’s certainly quite the coincidence, and it went viral online as the Knicks kept doing well. Between May 4 (three days after The Devil Wears Prada 2 premiered on the 2026 movie schedule) and June 13 (the day the Knicks won the NBA championship), they only lost one game.

During the playoffs, the team lost three games total (giving them a 16-3 record). However, when they entered the second series of the playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers, their win streak really got going, because they went undefeated in that series and did it again against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Then they lost Game 3 against the San Antonio Spurs in the finals, creating a 12-1 record since the premiere of Hathaway’s movie.

So, was that because of her film and Karl-Anthony Towns' cameo in it? Hathaway doesn’t think so. She gave credit to her third child, whom she’s currently pregnant with, telling Meyers:

Even though she didn't really give her movie credit, it didn’t stop Hathaway from fangirling about how cool this whole thing was and the fact that she shared the screen with Karl-Anthony Towns. She also brought it back around to the serendipity of the cameo and the Knicks going on to win it all this year, explaining:

The Devil Wears Prada 2 was filmed during the summer of 2025. A big part of the production took place in New York City, which was made abundantly clear through paparazzi photos that spoiled some outfits. That year, the Knicks made it to the conference finals in the playoffs. So, Hathaway spoke to Towns about it while they were filming, and then one year later, the team went all the way, as the actress recalled:

It was very cool, and this whole coincidence is another lovely thing that’s happened to Anne Hathaway this year. Along with her sports teams winning, she’s also pregnant with her third child. Also, by the end of 2026, she will have released five movies in one year -- Mother Mary and The Devil Wears Prada 2 are already out, The Odyssey hits theaters July 17, and The End of Oak Street and Verity come out on August 14 and October 2, respectively. So, she’s doing great, and so are the Knicks.

Is that because Hathaway and Karl-Anthony Towns were in The Devil Wears Prada 2 and it was released during the NBA Finals? I doubt it, and so does the actress. However, it’s fun to think about as the team continues to celebrate their win and the actress continues her epic year.

We always talk about the sadness that comes with Saturday Night Live cast members departing the show, but the truth is every time someone leaves, it also leads to additional opportunities. The most obvious of those opportunities comes in the form of screentime, but there are also additional benefits like more access to writers, better offices and hilariously in the case of Seth Meyers, his preferred cue card holder.

Meyers was recently asked about cue card master Wally Feresten during a Q&A with the audience on his talk show. After praising Wally and calling him “the best ever,” Meyers admitted that when his longtime Weekend Update partner Amy Poehler left SNL, he was elated when he realized that meant he’d get to start using Wally for himself from that point forward. Here’s a portion of his quote...

Saying Meyers has a strong relationship with Feresten would be an understatement. The cue card writer and holder, who has been with SNL since 1990, actually now pulls double duty and works on Late Night With Seth Meyers, as well. In fact, during the same conversation with the audience, Meyers said he thinks at this point, Wally has held up the cue cards for 95% of all the words he’s ever spoken on television. Given his lengthy career, that’s a huge statement.

Meyers and Poehler tag teamed the Weekend Update desk during Seasons 32 and 33 and part of Season 34. After Poehler left the show to star in Parks & Recreation, Meyers then manned the desk by himself (with the help of Wally) until Season 39 when Cecily Strong was added. That turned into Strong and Colin Jost, which turned into Colin Jost and Michael Che, who have shared the desk for the last decade plus since Season 40.

Meyers, of course, transitioned from the Update desk to his own talk show, Late Night With Seth Meyers, that has produced more than 1,800 episodes in the years since. Feresten has been around that entire time, and he remains an active part of SNL, where he’s now one of the longest serving crew members. Meyers himself also still shows up from time to time.

As for what changes we might see at SNL before the next season, that’s still an open question. Rumors, as always, are swirling about everyone from longtime showrunner Lorne Michaels to Weekend Update hosts Jost and Che, but we likely won’t have any official word until much closer to the season. It’ll be sad to see anyone leave, but as always, it’ll just create additional opportunities for screentime and access to beloved employees like Wally.

I’ve been writing a lot about late night in recent months, what with Jimmy Kimmel and Seth Meyers earning Trump’s ire and The Late Show getting unceremoniously canceled by CBS. However, one thing that came up when I was contemplating Stephen Colbert’s newly open schedule recently had to do with what the hours on late night TV actually entail. Thankfully, Seth Meyers has answered that question for us.

My query started because I wondered what Colbert was doing during his final days on set. Anyone who pays attention to the late night scene should already know that shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live! are a bit of a misnomer. Late night shows are taped, not live, and while they have backgrounds that give the feeling it is evening, they are worked on and taped hours earlier than they appear on our TVs. It’s a bit of bts magic that helps set the scene.

So we know the two Jimmys, Colbert, Seth Meyers and other hosts across the years work during the day, but they don’t always observe 9-5 hours. In fact, Meyers actually illuminated his late night schedule for viewers once, and it does sound like a bit of a grind, albeit a well-paying one.

Running Down How Late Night's Team Works Each Episode

At 8:30 a.m., Seth Meyers shows up at his office to start the day. That’s not as early as some, but it’s certainly a bit earlier than his former SNL cast members are waltzing into 30 Rock for their 9 a.m. pitch meetings on Mondays. By 11 scripts have been cemented and Meyers’ staff heads into his office for walk throughs on certain bits; in the Washington Post rundown of this timeline, they were working on a “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell” segment.

They keep rolling through noon and 2 p.m., and then finally the late night hosts steps up onto the stage for a quick run through with the test audience. The run through at Rockefeller Plaza commences at 4:15 p.m. Jokes are tried out, new jokes are sometimes written on the fly, and Meyers’ team takes a gauge of the temperature of the room after he runs through this initial version of his monologue.

By 5 p.m. the official cue cards are put together for Late Night. Seth Meyers employs Wally Feresten and his cue card team to help out with the show. Wally’s been doing SNL for 27 years and has the whole cue card thing down to a science. If you are wondering why Meyers is still using cue cards, there is a reason.

One big pro, though, to doing Meyers’ show is that SNL really is live. It’s gonna stop and start whether or not the cards are ready or need to be changed on the fly. Late Night’s a little looser and can stop and go, per Feresten.

It’s 6:15 when curtain call happens and the former SNL star is greeting his guests. Taping ends around 7:30 p.m. (remember some adjustments are able to be made for changes or emergencies). Presumably it’s after that when Seth Meyers goes home.

Sometimes, however, that’s not true of his staff, who must respond to breaking news, and must change jokes and segments for the next day’s show on the fly. In the WP article, Meyers’ writers Sal Gentile and Amber Ruffin, for example, kept working after taping, one at home and one in the writer’s room at 30 Rock.

To be clear, these shows are producing at volume. They usually break for a bit in the summer, on holidays, and a few other times over the year, but on average the 2026 TV schedule had late night shows producing between 150-200 episodes a season over the course of around 40 out of 52 weeks. So, it's certainly a long schedule, there's no question about it, and it's no wonder this was maybe not Colbert's "dream" job when he hesitantly said yes to it.

In the U.K., talk shows like The Graham Norton Show only air once a week. In the U.S., the Late Night writers are grinding it out like this five days a week, and they are responding to whatever is going on in the world in real time. It’s a lot, and while I can’t confirm Late Night with Seth Meyers operates in exactly the same way Stephen Colbert’s show did, the point is, it’s hard work for the large crew of individuals that bring us the tapings over and over again.

May 21 marked the end of an era. After hosting The Late Show for 11 years, Stephen Colbert officially signed off as his program came to an end on the 2026 TV schedule. CBS canceled the late-night talk show last year, and it caused quite a stir in Hollywood and around the world, with many celebrities and fellow late-night talk show hosts showing their support for Colbert. That support has continued over the months, and following the finale, Samuel L. Jackson, Ryan Reynolds, and many more sent some sweet shoutouts.

Colbert went above and beyond for the final episodes of The Late Show, bringing on special guests and doing special segments. Thursday’s finale, which drew The Late Show’s biggest audience in 10 years, according to The New York Times, had appearances from some famous friends such as Jon Stewart and Bryan Cranston, and the host's fitting final guest was Paul McCartney. It was emotional and very sweet. And those feelings didn’t stop when the lights got turned off, as many celebrities took to social media to send messages to the beloved host:

All of these messages, plus many others, and the outpouring of love and support that Colbert has received in these last several months, show how much he and The Late Show matter. It’s clear that everyone has had a great time on the late-night talk show, and while many are still debating what truly led to the show’s cancellation, it’s obvious that a ton of people did not want it to happen.

In addition to the sweet messages, some late-night shows, such as Jimmy Kimmel Live!, aired reruns for part of the week out of respect.

That being said, not everyone has been respectful, as President Trump’s post about the final show is as mean-spirited as you’d think. However, overall, the support for Colbert and his program has been overwhelmingly positive.

Earlier this month, Colbert revealed what he’s doing the day afterThe Late Show ends, sharing that his brother was actually getting married in D.C., and it’s much more important than what’s going on with the show. Colbert’s been busy with the final episodes of The Late Show, but he still has his priorities straight when it comes to his family.

With The Late Show’s cancellation, the future of late-night television is in question. Following Jimmy Kimmel Live’s brief suspension last year and the cancellation of The Late Show, it's unclear what could happen next. However, thankfully, Colbert was able to go out with a bang and surrounded by a whole bunch of folks who adore him and his work. Those who missed the finale of The Late Show can stream it now with a Paramount+ subscription.

Michael Che is quite popular on SNL these days, but when he first started out, things weren’t nearly as set in stone. In fact, Che really struggled during the early days on the late night NBC series. What I really mean by early days is more like early years, honestly.

In fact, the comedian recalled his early experiences on Saturday Night Live during a recent chat with fellow funnyman Mike Birbiglia. He said he owed a gratitude of debt to his “Weekend Update” co-star Colin Jost for helping him get the gig on the big stage, but his early memories of the show were honestly “terrible.” Yeah, like he literally used the word terrible.

So, why did working on Saturday Night Live suck so much for him early on? Apparently, there were two big reasons.

Reason SNL Stunk #1: Che Inherited Seth Meyers’ Writers

First and foremost, Michael Che was inheriting types of jokes when he started out. There was a weird transition period on the NBC series for a while there. Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler had been the long-standing “Update” hosts, then Seth took the desk by himself, and then for a brief moment Cecily Strong and Seth Meyers took the desk. When Seth left, Colin Jost worked with Strong for a while, but Che was brought in as a replacement.

In short, a lot of change was going on at “Weekend Update” at the time. One constant seems to have been the writing staff, but Che told Mike Birbiglia that didn’t really work for them at first because the writers hadn't been hired specifically for them.

I do get it. Seth Meyers is nothing like Michael Che. His sense of humor is different. He’s got an adorable laugh. He’s funniest on his own late night show when he’s lightheartedly day drinking. Che is also great, but he does not have the same energy as Meyers in the least. People like to describe his comedy as raw, and he and Jost’s most popular “Joke Swap” segment intentionally goes hard in the paint.

Reason SNL Stunk #2: Michael Che Is A Standup Comedian

I did not know the two had inherited Meyers’ writers, but I can see how that might have made things harder early on. However, Che’s second point has to do with standup, and it's something those who have done stand-up will get far more than I do:

What he seems to be talking about is comedic timing, and making sure the wording lands in a way a large swathe of the audience finds funny. Actors read and then figure out how to deliver, but from what he seems to be saying is he needs to do things differently in order to be successful and SNL, and in extension Update, don’t lend themselves to that. He’s not the only stand-up to have that problem, either.

He’s clearly doing something right these days. He and Colin Jost have owned the “Weekend Update” desk since 2014, and it's a well-known fact they are both in high demand elsewhere. There’s no word on whether Colin Jost or Michael Che will be exiting anytime soon, but they have said it’s “hard to imagine.” Season 51 is currently airing on the 2026 TV schedule, and we have a few more upcoming hosts and musical guests before the season wraps, but the end of each season brings some shakeups, so we’ll keep you posted when it comes to Fall TV.

Parks and Recreation may be a show that’s officially been off the air for over a decade, but that hasn’t stopped the cast from reuniting over the years and referencing their time on the show. When Aubrey Plaza did her first talk show since the public learned she’s pregnant, she ended up referencing a great scene from the beloved comedy, and I'm geeking out about it.

We learned that Aubrey Plaza is pregnant with her first child with boyfriend Christopher Abbott earlier this month. This week, the actress turned up on Late Night With Seth Meyers, where the host mentioned the pregnancy, and she responded to his comment in her classic deadpan delivery:

Oh yeah, that episode! In the finale of Parks and Recreation, April and Andy have a baby on Halloween, and Henry Winkler’s Dr. Lu Saperstein delivers it. You can check out the scene here:

You have to love how Aubrey Plaza just casually talked about Parks and Recreation unprompted. It is pretty funny that her most famous character has had a baby, and now she joked that she wants the guest star or Seth Meyers to assist her in the birth.

In the finale, April hilariously decides that she wants to wear Halloween makeup while giving birth – prompting Andy to say she looks “more beautiful” than he’s ever seen her. The whole exchange is classic Aubrey Plaza, and it’s moments like these that make me want to go to Pawnee and rewatch the whole show all over again.

Plaza was on Seth Meyers to promote a new show of hers that just dropped on the 2026 TV schedule. She co-created an adult animation TV show with her ex Joe Wengert about their cat, and it’s called Kevin. The show has a wild cast list, including Whoopi Goldberg and John Waters, and the first season is now streaming completely for those with an Amazon Prime subscription.

Being a mother-to-be reportedly came as a “beautiful surprise” to Aubrey Plaza and her partner, Christopher Abbott, per People. The actress has been dealing with the loss of her husband Jeff Baena, who died in January 2025, a few months after the couple had separated after being a couple since 2011. Along with getting ready to welcome her first child, Plaza has two animated movies on the way, The Ark and The Aardvark and Animal Friends.

Until then, I have to wonder what April and Andy’s baby is like...

When Seth Meyers made the transition from SNL head writer and “Weekend Update” extraordinaire to his own late night show, he needed a gimmick. He found it day drinking with big celebrities like Kristen Stewart and delightful imbibers like Kelly Clarkson. As it turns out though, the day drinking is not acting, and Meyers actually ends up very drunk.

So, How Much Day Drinking Happens During The Day Drinking?

During a recent Q&A, someone actually asked Seth Meyers about the day drinking, and while the window is not super long, the amount is not for the faint of heart.

He previously admitted the videos on YouTube have to be “edited for time,” so fans are really only seeing about 40% or so of the actual drinking going on. If you’ve seen him drink with Martha Stewart and more, there’s quite a bit of shots and cocktails shown, so it’s hard to imagine how much is really going into their bodies.

The one pro to day drinking? He can go to sleep right afterwards, and in fact designs his days to go home as soon as the day drinking is done. Whether or not that’s amazing for every is a little fuzzier though.

Seth Meyers’ Wife Has To Put Up With A Lot Thanks To Day Drinking

Seth Meyers sounds like he's game for the drinking, but apparently he's not really the most sturdy drinker. In fact, he sounds like a bit of a mess.

I distinctly remember another time Seth Meyers was so wasted after a bout of day drinking he ended up passing out in the hallway of his home. He’d been going hard in the paint with Rihanna (in fact he told James Corden that’s the drunkest he’d ever been), and had no regrets, until “fell asleep in the hallway” of his NY pad and his poor wife stuck a water by his head.

While he said at the time it was passive aggressive, it’s also kind of sweet, and it’s clear she has her husband’s back. however, and he also revealed she did him a solid and found a way to sober him up a bit better after these crazy drinking bouts.

So, it’s nice to know he has someone looking after him, and he's said before that over the years he's "scaled down" his drinking outside of the segments. The things we do for content, though, am I right?

While Ben Marshall has been appearing on Saturday Night Live for years, he didn’t become a full cast member until Season 51. Now, as the show has been airing on the 2025 and 2026 TV schedules, and he's gotten more airtime, he’s started doing something in his sketches over and over again. That thing is not wearing a shirt and/or putting himself in situations where his shirt needs to be taken off, and Seth Meyers called him out for it. However, the comedian had a great response prepared.

When Marshall appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the host took a moment to point out the fact that the SNL cast member has been shirtless in sketches at least three times during Season 51. Calling out the pattern, he noted that those things are written into the show. While Marshall claimed he didn’t know what was going on with this pattern, he also quipped:

Well, I guess the person to blame here is the writer…Ben Marshall. Truly, this is the best response he could have had. I love that he both admitted to writing these sketches and attempted to place the blame on the writer (which, again, was him). And yes, I do think it’s made better by the fact that he was wearing a snow suit while explaining all this.

Marshall's joke didn’t stop there either, because when he posted the clip of this conversation from Late Night on his Instagram, he wrote:

Considering he’s the one writing these, I think Marshall might enjoy being exploited. Plus, the sketches Meyers mentioned have been super funny.

Specifically, Heated Wizardry -- which was a sketch about what might happen if Heated Rivalry happened at Hogwarts (don’t worry, Daniel Radcliffe was warned about it) -- really got audiences laughing. And considering the steamy nature of gay hockey romance that millions have binged with an HBO Max subscription, it makes sense that the Please Don’t Destroy boy found himself shirtless during the sketch.

All around, Marshall has been having a solid first season. He was one of five new stars added to SNL amid the massive shakeup that happened before Season 51. It was a big step for him, too, considering it came after he spent five years writing for the show as one-third of Please Don’t Destroy. Now, he’s proving to be a very entertaining (and often shirtless) on-air personality.

Now, to see if Ben Marshall keeps this pattern of not wearing a shirt up, you can catch this week’s episode of Saturday Night Live on its titular night at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC or with a Peacock subscription. Notably, Heated Rivalry’s Connor Storrie is hosting…So, I wouldn’t be surprised if Seth Meyers ends up with another shirtless photo that he can use to call the comedian out with.

For now, and for the next several months, fans shouldn't expect any major shake-ups in the world of late night talk shows. (Barring any extreme 2025-esque incidents.) But when May rolls around, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will exit the 2026 TV schedule, paying off on CBS' decision to cancel Colbert's show back in July. It sounds like we’ll be seeing more good-natured camaraderie among the host and others in the interim, which is on the opposite end of the spectrum from where the format was 30-35 years ago.

As The Late Show continues to mostly win out over the competition in the ratings, Stephen Colbert will be making the jump to NBC to visit Late Night with Seth Meyers for the first time in well over a decade. Fans can expect to see the two comedy stalwarts sharing the Late Night stage on Tuesday, January 27.

Just how long ago was the last time Colbert promoted something on Seth Meyers’ show? Well, he hadn’t hosted any Late Show episodes yet, and was in fact still months away from ending his run on Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report. It happened on September 2, 2014, at a point when Meyers had only been hosting the show for around six months. It’ll look a little different this time around, without Fred Armisen’s band around anymore, but should be a fun time that no doubt reflects on the challenges that 2025 brought

According to LateNighter, the schedule is set so that Stephen Colbert will travel the five blocks early on Monday to get his Late Night appearance recorded before jetting back to the Ed Sullivan Theater to get that night’s episode knocked out. The timing is largely due to Seth Meyers taping back-to-back episodes to air across the Monday and Tuesday nights.

Can you imagine back in the early ‘90s, during the height of David Letterman and Jay Leno’s late night feud, that either of them would have acquiesced to record an appearance on the other’s show? Anytime a rivalry is big enough to spark both a best-selling book AND a TV movie adaptation, it’s not a great sign. Those were cutthroat times, and even last year, Leno voiced his belief that meeting up with Letterman now would be awkward.

Obviously, none of the current crop of late night hosts have anywhere near the amount of baggage that sparked the late night wars, with Conan O’Brien being arguably the last host with a justifiable grudge due to his Tonight Show screwjob. (At least until Colbert’s cancellation, obviously.) To the point where Colbert not appearing on Meyers’ show for 12 years is more of an exception than the norm.

For instance, Stephen Colbert showed up on Jimmy Kimmel Live! back in September 2025, and also spoke at Conan O’Brien’s Mark Twain Prize ceremony months prior. He also showed up for CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live telecast with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen, but that’s a different kind of late night experience.

On the flip side, Seth Meyers dropped by The Graham Norton Show in 2025, and appeared twice on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in the same year, once as a guest (in May) and then as a special surprise for Colbert’s episode in September. He was a Late Show guest for the Halloween episode, but also appeared with tons of other celebs in Colbert’s first episode post-cancellation announcement. Meanwhile, Jimmy Kimmel guested on both The Late Show and The Late Show Pod Show in January 2026, four months after his previous appearance. (His first time making the jump to CBS for Colbert’s show was in 2015.) He’s only been on Late Night with Seth Meyers once, with that episode airing in 2024.

Also worth noting in this context, Meyers is also the only one to appear on The Tonight Show in 2025. Colbert hasn’t been on opposite Jimmy Fallon since 2015. And yet Fallon also popped up for that all-star Late Show episode in July. I bet we’ll see those two crossing paths at least once before May.

There’s no question that President Donald Trump has taken aim at late night television, while many of the hosts on late night television have thrown jabs at everything from the current administration to even those White House Ballroom changes. Surprisingly, former late night host Conan O’Brien recently explained why he feels “getting so angry” over politics while onstage can take over one’s personality and can be a dangerous game to play. This in turn, prompted Megyn Kelly to weigh in on Conan’s thoughts, but also late night TV in general.

What Did Conan O’Brien Say About ‘F–k Donald Trump’

You may have seen the headlines already. A few days ago, Conan O’Brien spoke at an event for Oxford Union where the TV and Internet personality declared it’s a bit dangerous to devote one’s entire personality to “f–k Donald Trump.”

He said it’s the job of a comedian to channel that anger into something that’s a little more thought-provoking and edgy or you are in danger of simply not being funny anymore.

Conan doesn’t feel it’s the job of a comedian to be so serious, but lots of people on the Internet are now taking his comments and weighing in, tying them to late night hosts like Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel in particular. Megyn Kelly's the latest example, and she recently spoke out on her own platform The Megyn Kelly Show.

How Megyn Kelly Feels About Late Night (And Conan O’Brien’s Opinions)

Megyn Kelly told podcaster Link Lauren that when she was watching Conan’s comments, she felt it was clear he was taking aim at the three late night hosts: Seth Meyers, Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert.

Jimmy Fallon largely escapes Ms. Kelly’s wrath unscathed. While he occasionally does make a Trump joke, tonally Fallon isn’t interested in getting political on his late night show outside of the occasional monologue dig. He’s better known for playing silly games with celebrities than making pointed statements, and he's been open about why The Tonight Show doesn't get political in the past.

However, Kelly went hard on her critique of some of the other late night hosts. Yet back in 2011, she actually appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and told a gracious story about being invited to the White House to meet with then President Obama and his wife Michelle.

More than a decade later, she's less civil about the late night host after he compared his viral suspension from ABC to a "near death experience." She spent another chunk of her show calling Jimmy Kimmel “this multimillionaire privileged asshole” who was “off the air” for all of “five days,” but was complaining nonetheless. This comes after she commented on his return to late night in September, saying at that time she felt that because of Kimmel's politics, he got reinstated rather than "cancelled."

This isn't the only time the host has been on a tear against Tinseltown, recently complaining about Bruce Willis and other Hollywood celebs she had negative interactions with. She said here it's become a "Trump bashing session" with the entertainment crowd, and this seems to be her way of responding.

Meanwhile, while Kelly seemed to identify Conan O'Brien as talking about late night hosts, O'Brien is a former late night host himself, and even recently gave Stephen Colbert advice about what's next after ending his show.

There’s a reason Ariana Grande has hosted SNL three times (and appeared a few other times). She’s quick-witted, she’s funny, and she has an appealing taste in sketches, as evidenced by everything from the first Domingo sketch to the recent R-rated Home Alone ending rewrite she did during her latest episode. Working the show into her busy schedule sounds rough; however, and the Wicked star recently revealed how she managed to prep for Christmas while also working on Bowen Yang’s final episode.

Signing on to be the last SNL host of the year is not for the faint of heart. The episode aired just before the Christmas holiday, and the actress said she worked way ahead to get her shopping done before she started rehearsing for the sketch comedy series.

She joked in this clip from Late Night With Seth Meyers the result of this wrapping was “well-intentioned,” and it definitely sounds like a bit of an afterthought with everything else going on. Meanwhile, her hard work at 30 Rock paid off.

I personally thought Grande’s episode was the best of the season. It was certainly the most poignant when it closed with a sketch featuring Bowen Yang as a “retiring” airport employee at his last day on the job. It was a solid closing moment for an excellent episode overall, though it sounds like there was a lot more going on with Yang's exit behind the scenes.

Not every sketch Grande has worked on has worked out, though. Like so many before her, she told Seth Meyers when she becomes “attached to a sketch that doesn’t make it” it can be “really tough.” Meyers went on to joke it’s not a “person” and they don’t “put the sketch down,” but Grande confirmed it’s still heart-wrenching to lose an SNL sketch she poured time and effort into.

However, her most memorable cut for time sketch was one she did with Taran Killam. The sketch, called “New Studio” is apparently her dad’s favorite thing she’s done on the show. It also features very longtime player Kenan Thompson and Vanessa Bayer and it’s “very niche,” as Grande politely put it.

There are lots of great "Cut For Time" sketches that fans are familiar with thanks to SNL now pushing them out in places like YouTube. Some of them the Internet even gets a little obsessed with, including this recent Jacob Elordi Pimp My Ride-themed sketch.

Listen, technically Grande has appeared on SNL five times already, and she’s well on her way to the Five-Timers Club, an elite group of celebs that have hosted at least that many times. Those numbers include Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson (who's explained why the "delirious" feeling you get on SNL is worth it) and many more a-listers, and I think Grande is well on her way to ranking among them. She may just need to learn to kill a few more darlings, first.

When it comes to sketch comedy, there is (of course) one show that reigns supreme, and that is Saturday Night Live. The series has had an impressive list of hosts and musical acts in Season 51, as usual, but it’s always fun for fans with a Peacock subscription to go back and re-watch favorite episodes. Viewers could do that if they enjoy the comedy stylings of 2025 movies star Jack Black, who’s now hosted four times, but Seth Meyers has noted that they won’t be able to watch a sketch of his that the cast still loves, because it was cut.

What Happened With Jack Black’s ‘Beloved’ SNL Sketch That Got Cut?

Every season of SNL has had its share of viral moments and unbelievably popular sketches, with Season 51’s political sketches topping views, and everything from Ego Nwodim accidentally leading the audience to curse on live TV to numerous A+ sketches from major cast members over the years continuing to get props.

However, we also know that not everything the cast and hosts work on makes it to the live show, for various reasons. Well, during a recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the host was speaking with Anaconda star Jack Black about a sketch from his hosting stint in 2005 that is still considered top tier by the cast, but never made it to air. As Meyers said:

Alright. I gotta say, I’m already intrigued, aren’t you? Without even knowing how the whole thing would have played out, just the idea of a “Boys Night Out” sketch with Black sounds like it would have been pitch perfect. The Jumanji 4 actor said:

Let me tell you, once you hear the actor’s rendition of the start of this tune (which is at 5:10 in the full clip), you will absolutely want to hear more:

See! It’s amazing, right? So, why, exactly, did this potentially awesome live sketch not make it onto the show. Black explained:

The dress rehearsals are essentially run like a live show, meaning that they also feature a live audience to see whether or not what they have planned actually works in the moment for fans. Unfortunately, the audience that time around was not in the mood for “Boys Night Out,” so it was pulled from the show. I have to say, though, considering just the snippet that we were able to hear of what had been planned, it seems like we really missed out on what could have been a great and incredibly memorable sketch.

The past few years have seen Saturday Night Live bring in new talent, and that was very evident this year, given that massive cast shake-up. One of the cast members who remains after that slew of changes is Ashley Padilla, who joined the show during its landmark 50th season. Padilla has been steadily carving out a space for herself within SNL, and she’s arguably becoming a fan-favorite in the process. Funny enough, Padilla believed she’d lost the job after meeting with Lorne Michaels, and Seth Meyers thinks he knows why.

Anyone who’s aware of the SNL casting process likely knows that at some point, series hopefuls audition for series EP Lorne Michaels and later meet with him. That was the experience for Ashley Padilla, as she explained to Seth Meyers on Late Night (as seen on YouTube). During her appearance on the talk show, Padilla recalled being flown out to New York to audition for the NBC staple, and she eventually touched on her meeting with Michaels. After some small talk, the producer delivered a blunt piece of news:

Part of me is cringing just thinking about that awkward conversation and, after that chat, Padilla apparently went to grab a drink with other performers who met with Michaels and apparently received the same answer. However, the San Francisco native eventually received a call from a producer telling her that she’d landed the gig. So why did Michaels say what he said to her? Well, Seth Meyers shared a take on the seemingly gruff exec:

Lorne Michaels – who was supposedly almost replaced by Judd Apatow years ago – doesn’t strike me as a cold man, based on his public persona. However, I could definitely see him being uncomfortable while being voraciously hugged by a newly hired cast member. Don’t be fooled by any anecdotes, though, as Michaels does indeed seem to care about the cast members – both current and former. (Pete Davidson opened up about how Michaels has been there for him amid his personal struggles.)

So far, I’d say that Michaels’ decision to hire Ashley Padilla is working out in a big way. Padilla has excelled in sketches like “Simon and Heather” and “Surprise,” and who could forget her Weekend Update debut as Jo-Ann of Jo-Ann Fabrics? More recently, the comedian has been shining in the role of White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. In short, Padilla is on her way to becoming a breakout SNL star, and I’m glad her meeting with Michaels didn’t go as badly as she assumed it would.

As of late, U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed disdain for a number of current late-night talk show hosts, including Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel. Seth Meyers has also found himself on the receiving end of POTUS’ critiques, many of which have been shared via social media. Within the last few days, Trump called out Meyers and declared that his show should be canceled. Interestingly enough, though, these gripes came after the president apparently watched an episode of the show he’d already complained about.

During the Monday, November 17th edition of Late Night, Seth Meyers addressed the president’s latest comments about his show. Meyers prefaced the discussion (which is on YouTube) by explaining that several weeks ago, President Trump expressed “displeasure” with how he “talked endlessly about electric catapults on aircraft carriers.” Trump’s latest comments were posted to Truth Social on Saturday, November 15 and once again involved catapults.

However, Meyers went on to explain that in Trump’s Saturday post, the Commander in Chief mentioned that the comments Meyers made were broadcast “last night” or more specifically, Friday, November 14. As it turns out, though, the episode that was broadcast on that particular weekday was a repeat – the episode involving the catapults. So, in other words, POTUS lashed out over the same topic after watching the exact same TV episode twice. Meyers poked fun at the president’s faux pas by making a Friends-centric analogy:

As of this writing, President Trump has responded to Seth Meyers’ take on his latest catapult-related gripes. Yet FCC chairman Brendan Carr notably screenshotted Trump’s post and shared it to X without adding any additional comment. Carr was, of course, embroiled in another situation months ago involving a different TV host.

Carr appeared on a podcast in September, during which he implied that ABC’s broadcasting license could be revoked due to on-air comments Jimmy Kimmel made in relation to the death of Charlie Kirk. The Alphabet Network ultimately suspended Kimmel’s show, with the decision coming down from Disney’s top brass. Amid the suspension, Carr, Trump and more supported the decision, while various celebrities came to Kimmel’s defense. While Kimmel was surprised by the decision, he and execs eventually engaged in discussions and, after five days, the show was reinstated.

These late-night TV-related developments have occurred as the landscape itself undergoes a major shift, one that’s even seen The Late Show with Stephen Colbert get canceled. Seth Meyers previously expressed reservations over the changes and acknowledged that his professional fate was not his own. Still, at this point, Meyers continues to conduct business as usual and provide commentary on President Trump, politics, pop culture and more.

Late night talk show hosts have had quite a bit to talk about as of late when it comes to world events. Someone who’s seemingly remained a fixture in the hosts’ monologues, however, is U.S. President Donald Trump. Most recently, POTUS has been making headlines due to his efforts to add a ballroom to the White House. Construction on the project is currently underway, and the plan has drawn the ire of fellow politicians, celebrities and more. With that, Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers all shared thoughts while on air.

Jimmy Fallon Makes Jokes About President Trump’s Renovation Plans

While Jimmy Fallon historically hasn’t been too political on his show, he has been weighing in on President Trump’s exploits as of late. During an episode of The Tonight Show this past week, Fallon took a few jabs at the ongoing renovation. Fallon began by noting that the price of the president’s ballroom project – which has led to the demolition of the White House’s East Wing – is already proving to be more expensive than anticipated. With that in mind, Fallon (as seen on YouTube) said this:

Fallon also brought up the fact that President Trump mentioned that the new ballroom would be connected to the White House by a “glass bridge.” The host then poked fun at the notion by saying, “‘cause when women are dressed in a ballgown, they want to walk over a glass bridge.” During the monologue, Fallon also joked about Trump releasing the list of donors to the ballroom, which includes the likes of Amazon and Apple. However, Fallon quipped that that’s “not the list of names we’re looking for,” referring to the Jeffrey Epstein client list.

Stephen Colbert Skewers President Trump’s Ballroom Ambition

More critiques of the ballroom came from Stephen Colbert of The Late Show. Colbert discussed the news (via YouTube) during his monologue as part of what he referred to as the latest installment of “Trump Smash 2025.” Much of Colbert’s take focused on the destruction to the East Wing and the method that was taken to purportedly prevent journalists for taking photos, and he laid that out as follows:

Those comments above - as well as Colbert’s further critiques regarding the donors and more – come months after The Late Show’s cancellation. Throughout that time, President Trump also celebrated the news, though Colbert hasn’t held back from continuing to take POTUS to task on various topics. While the cancellation of Colbert’s show further signifies the changes in the late night landscape, he’s still focused on his goal to “land this plane” next spring.

Seth Meyers Shares His Thoughts On President Trump’s Ballroom

Someone else who’s talked about the ballroom – and the future of late night TV – is Seth Meyers. This past week, Meyers also approached the situation from the perspective of the demolition of the East Wing. Meyers ultimately joked that he believed this construction may indicate that President Trump doesn’t plan to leave the White House in 2028. As he shared in a compilation, which is on YouTube):

Conversations continue to surround the ballroom plans for the White House, with many questioning whether it’s truly necessary. It remains to be seen how construction will continue to progress and how media personalities might keep weighing in as time goes on.

Anytime a former Weekend Update anchor hosts Saturday Night Live, there’s an anticipation that they might bust out their church clothes and make an appearance behind the desk to read a few jokes. As such, it wasn’t a surprise to see Amy Poehler join Colin Jost and Michael Che this week, but it certainly was a surprise to see multiple other ex-Weekend Update anchors join her for a joke-off.

That’s right. This week featured a good old fashioned joke off between Jost, Che, Poehler and special guests Tina Fey and Seth Meyers. Both Fey and Meyers, of course, were co-anchors alongside Poehler at various points during her tenure; so, the cameos made a lot of sense, even if they were unexpected.

The joke-off set-up was a woman in Tennessee breaking a hospital record by having a thirteen pound baby, and to the surprise of no one, her massive kid proved to be good subject matter for a lot of rapid fire jokes. You watch all the current and former anchors in action below…

Together, these five all place in the top six of total episodes anchoring or co-anchoring Weekend Update. Jost is first with 226 episodes, followed by Che with 219 episodes, followed by Meyers with 154 episodes, followed by Fey with 118 episodes, followed by Poehler with 80 episodes. Only Dennis Miller slots into the above with 111 episodes, though I suppose we should give Jimmy Fallon a shout-out, as well, as he’s tied with Poehler’s 80 episodes.

In addition to being a bit of good fun, this Weekend Update segment is also a good reminder of how similar, yet different the segment can be under different anchors. The basic conceit of reading news stories like a traditional anchor and telling jokes about them has never changed since Chevy Chase launched the segment back in the 1970s, but the tone, subject matter and delivery can change quite a bit with the sensibilities of each anchor.

This current version of Weekend Update has represented the longest period of stability in the long-running segment’s history. Jost and Che have shared the duties for more than ten consecutive seasons, which has never happened before. Exactly how much longer that stability will last, however, is an open question. Rumors swirled near the end of last season that Jost might walk away over the summer, and there were similar whispers about Che, as well. The two are no longer head writers on the show, and with plenty of opportunities for each outside SNL, many fans thought they’d walk away.

Fortunately, they did not. They’re back for another season. At some point soon-ish, however, they’ll exit Studio 8H, and it’ll be fascinating to see whether showrunner Lorne Michaels and company pick someone currently on the cast or bring in someone new. Either way, they’ll evolve the segment to their own tastes, and we’ll get a new and exciting take on the old classic to watch.

The rest of Poehler’s episode was, of course, great. There was even an A+ spoof for a Hunting Wives Season 2 trailer, which featured a cameo from Aubrey Plaza. I’d highly recommend throwing the whole thing up on Peacock or via your DVR and giving it a watch. The show will return next week with an all new episode featuring upcoming guest host Sabrina Carpenter, who, more than likely, will not read the news on Weekend Update.

We’re in the thick of fall TV on the 2025 TV schedule, and you know what that means: Saturday Night Live is back. The show is returning for its 51st season, and you can expect to see both new and old faces, including Chloe Fineman. So, to celebrate the show’s return, she posted a clip of her and Seth Meyers discussing their NBC IDs, and she absolutely roasted the former SNL cast member.

Throwing it back to a Late Night with Seth Meyers interview from about a year ago, Fineman took to Instagram to post a clip of her and the host discussing their first days working for NBC Universal to celebrate SNL's return. This conversation mostly centered around their IDs and how young, scared and drunk (?) they looked in them:

Boom! Roasted! Now, let's break this hilarious conversation down.

First of all, it’s worth noting that both Fineman and Meyers have worked at NBC for quite some time.

The Summer of 69 actress started doing comedy in her late 20s, and she joined the show in Season 45 back in 2019. She’s been there ever since, with Season 51 marking her seventh season on the show. So, she’s a seasoned veteran now; however, as she said, on her first day at 30 Rock, she was terrified, explaining:

I imagine Season 51’s new cast members – Veronika Slowikowska, Kam Patterson, Jeremy Culhane, Tommy Brennan and Ben Marshall – were also a bit scared and maybe intimidated walking into 30 Rock for the first time. I know I would be. However, I bet they were welcomed with open arms as the wild train that is SNL set off for another season.

Now, four of the aforementioned new SNL 51 cast members are brand new, Marshall is a new addition to the cast but was a writer and part of Please Don’t Destroy before, and Fineman has been there for the better part of the 2020s. Seth Meyers has been at NBC a lot longer.

He joined SNL in 2004 during Season 30, and stuck around until Season 44. Immediately after that, in 2014, he started hosting Late Night, and he’s on his eleventh season of that show. That’s all to say, he’s worked for NBCUniversal for 21 years. To further contextualize that, he’s 51 right now, and was about 30 when his photo was taken.

Fineman roasted him for his old ID, too, and it was hilarious. Here’s their back and forth:

• Seth Meyers: Mine is like a gentleman, first of all, look how beat up mine is. That’s a guy…
• Chloe Fineman: You look like you got a DUI.
• Seth Meyers: I do. I look like I got a DUI.

I’m laughing so hard, and I can’t help but notice that Meyers does look quite different now. And that tracks, because as the host said, he was half the age he is now when that photo was taken:

Fineman went on to ask if that’s even possible, and Meyers said he thought it was. However, she said she’s lost her ID many times, and they’ve never let her redo the picture. The former Weekend Update host said that’s for the best, though, joking that “you have to remember where you came from.”

That’s hilarious! And as someone with some tragic ID photos that I’m stuck with for years, I totally get all of this. However, as Meyers said, having a bad image is kind of like a rite of passage.

They’ve really both come a long way since that first photo was taken, and it’s fun to see them joke about it, especially now. That’s because Season 51 of SNL will kick off with host Bad Bunny and musical guest Doja Cat tonight, October 4 at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC (you can also stream it with a Peacock subscription).

As we know, back in 2022, Saturday Night Live pals, Colin Jost and Pete Davidson, bought a decommissioned ferry. Lovingly named Titanic 2, the vessel and its saga to be revived has taken on a life of its own. From annoying Staten Island locals to hosting a Tommy Hilfiger fashion show, the two comedians have apparently only just begun to make headway with the project. Davidson provides Seth Meyers with the latest while the host marvels at just how massive those ferries can be.

Since 2022, the funnymen have been working on their $280k bid and have slowly made progress updating the boat. As mentioned, they’ve begun to host events, other creative endeavors and have future happenings ahead. New details about the infamous purchase arose on Late Night with Seth Meyers after the host shared that he was on a Staten Island ferry for the first time for his kid’s field trip. While boarding, Meyers couldn’t help but laugh thinking about Jost and Davidson:

Sometimes I feel bad for the comedian investors being the butt of many jokes about their ship. It’s become a running gag in Hollywood, and even Scarlett Johansson has trolled the Titanic 2. But, then again, they grew up around a comparable boat, so those like Meyers who can't help but laugh aren't too far fetched.

The Bupkis star confirmed the gigantic scale of their purchase by referencing its seat size and multiple levels. As they’ve always talked about, they’re chipping away floor by floor. And whenever they’re financially prepared, they’ll move into the next remodel, as he said:

The numbers are mind boggling. I haven’t ridden a true Staten Island ferry but have been on comparable ships and even a smaller sized one is no joke. I can only imagine the planning that goes into it, especially with Davidson having three 2025 movie schedule titles and Jost returning once again as an SNL Season 51 cast member.

Still, they are percolating with plans amid the ongoing rebuild of the interior of the Titanic 2. Meyers humorously summed up their agenda as they forge ahead on levels, saying:

He said what we’ve all been thinking perfectly light hearted. The whole journey thus far has overall remained part mysterious part joke, and I think that’s exactly what they want. Though, anytime either have a special 2025 TV guide appearance, they generally get asked about it, which may get annoying.

Regardless, I’m glad to hear that even though it's a typical monstrously sized Staten Island Ferry, Jost and Davidson are continuing to make progress. Even with Seth Meyers and co. razzing them about it along the way.

It’s been well documented over the last decade that Andy Samberg does not like Seth Meyers' dog Frisbee. So, when Frisbee’s death was announced, many sent their condolences to the Late Night host and wondered how her nemesis felt about this tragic news. Well, now the Brooklyn Nine-Nine star has reacted to the news, and let’s just say, he’s not dropping the bit he’s held up for years.

While promoting his project on the 2025 movie schedule, The Roses, with his co-star and fellow SNL vet Kate McKinnon, Samberg was asked for his thoughts on Frisbee’s passing. Before the actress could even get the full question out during an interview with ET, the man who has spent years making fun of this dog quipped:

McKinnon was then able to finish the question, and she asked Samberg how he felt about Frisbee’s obituaries focusing on the fact that he’s spent so long roasting her and if he had an alibi at the time of her passing. In response, the Palm Springs actor said:

Man, he really isn’t dropping this bit, is he? I guess we shouldn’t be surprised, though. Not long before Frisbee’s death, Meyers got Amy Poehler to prank Samberg into thinking his dog was dead on her podcast Good Hang. When the Parks and Rec star asked her guest if he knew that Frisbee had died, he said, “Don’t even play, because I’ll be so happy,” and then he roasted the tiny Italian Greyhound.

He also said on that podcast, which was released a little over a month before Frisbee’s passing, that he will “never back off” when it comes to hating on his friend’s pet.

Well, he kept that promise, because when McKinnon asked him why he had beef with Frisbee, he said:

Samberg followed that up by saying he obviously doesn’t want to be rude about anyone’s death. However, considering the public beef he had with this dog, which is reminiscent of Matt Damon and Jimmy Kimmel's faux hatred and Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s fake feud, this whole situation is quite funny. He joked:

Along with the comedian keeping up this bit, Seth Meyers also shared his thoughts on it. In an Instagram story about how the internet covered Frisbee’s passing, he noted that while he is “sad” about the death of this dog, he could acknowledge “that it’s very funny every headline is about how much Samberg hated her guts.” In a tweet, he also hilariously confirmed that this wasn’t a one-sided feud as he joked that the Italian Greyhound “also disliked” his former SNL colleague.

So, all around, this situation highlights how there can be humor in tragic situations. And while we’re very sad that Frisbee tragically passed, it’s hard not to laugh about how big an impact Andy Samberg’s mission to constantly troll her had, even after her death.

It's an interesting time for late night TV, as the genre is seemingly going through a number of changes. The internet was set ablaze with news of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert being cancelled, prompting plenty of responses from fans as well as support from other hosts like Jimmy Fallon. As things shake out, Donald Trump has been vocal about Colbert, and is now taking aim at Seth Meyers

Colbert has been joking about what's next after his show ends, but folks have been wondering if more late night firings might occur. While fans are sounding off about the cancellation, President Trump is taking to Truth Social to take shots at a number of the late night hosts. Case in point: the following post that criticized Seth Meyers. As he put it:

Trump taking aim at the SNL alum probably isn't all that surprising if you watch Late Night with Seth Meyers. During his presidencies Meyers and his team regularly filmed a segment called "A Closer Look", where he would criticize and poke fun at Trump and his administration. So this type of take down online was possibly a long time coming for the President, and follows suit given he previously commented on Colbert getting axed.

Of course, Meyers isn't the only one that Donald Trump is posting bout on Truth Social. In another post he also made claims about the talents of Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon, the latter of which actually hosted him on The Tonight Show. As the Apprentice host put it:

Kimmel called out CBS after Colbert's cancellation, which may be another reason why the comedian has received the ire of Trump. But overall it seems like none of the late night hosts are exempt from the President's disdain, especially since many of them use their platform to publicly criticize him.

Donald Trump seemingly pays a great deal of attention to television, particularly how he's portrayed. South Park has been throwing a ton of shade at the president, which has been getting more attention given the late night changes and rumors that networks are backing off of the President. Colbert praised South Park for its portrayal, but only time will tell if any other late night hosts end up losing their gigs.

New episodes of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert are still airing for the time being as part of the 2025 TV schedule. That series is expected to end in May of 2026.

It was a sad day for Seth Meyers when his 14-year-old dog Frisbee passed away. Again, I think it’s safe to say that Frisbee’s claim to fame was her ongoing and one-sided feud with Andy Samberg. In fact, when I think of funny rivalries, this one is up there with Jimmy Kimmel and Matt Damon’s feud and Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s rivalry.

For years, and I mean years, Andy Samberg has consistently made his hatred of Frisbee very well known. Even just recently, on Good Hang with Amy Poehler, Meyers asked the Parks and Rec star to try and trick their SNL colleague into thinking Frisbee was dead. When she asked Samberg, he replied with, “Don’t even play, because I’ll be so happy,” and “That dog sucks, dude.”

To prove just how long this has been going on, nine years ago, Meyers said on his show that Andy Samberg can’t stand his dog. Five years ago, Meyers forced Samberg to confront his dog on Late Night, and in return, the Hot Rod actor held up a Post-it that said “Frisbee sucks.” And two years ago, during Samberg’s takeover of “A Closer Look,” he called Frisbee “the worst greyhound since the bus.” And those are just three examples; there are plenty more.

As many of the comments note, the timing of this sad news is quite wild. Andy Samberg’s birthday was, in fact, yesterday, August 18. So, it’s really hard not to draw the connections now.

Hopefully, Frisbee can rest easy knowing that her legacy includes Andy Samberg’s hilarious hatred, because I think a lot of people, myself included, grew to love her as his nemesis. She truly did become a legend, and she’ll be dearly missed.

At present, the term ‘G.O.A.T.’ (Greatest Of All Time) has become widely known and used. In fact it’s become so commonplace that it has described everything from Samuel L. Jackson's favorite Christmas flick to Conan O'Brien's comedy chops. And that’s not even skimming the surface of musicians, sports or the ongoing GOAT basketball debate. Regardless, it wasn’t until today did I know LL Cool J takes claim for coining the superlative nickname.

The history of the topic and LL Cool J’s connection to the moniker surfaced during Late Night with Seth Meyers. After discussing the rapper-and-actor’s new series, Hip Hop Was Born Here (now streaming with a Paramount+ subscription), Meyers asked about his claims to creating G.O.A.T. With a good laugh, the NCIS actor jumped into the back story, citing two sports legends, Muhammad Ali and Earl Manigault. From there, it took off. He said:

Finding the true originator of anything can be a tricky feat, but this retelling of the ‘G.O.A.T.’ origins has some legs. Of course “Greatest Of All Time” is not a new phrase, and has been in use since the boxer’s reign. But it being braided with the legendary street player’s nickname checks out for me–it is an exemplary example of the word. And, if it was birthed by the same “Mama Said Knock You Out,” artist, I’m not surprised it went worldwide.

If that wasn’t enough, LL Cool J had an album from 2000 with said abbreviated word (with the full meaning next to it) as the title. He believes that was the first time that it was fully realized in pop culture. Wryly, the Deep Blue Sea alum said you could ask AI if that’s true, but couldn’t promise it’d give the real answer. He shared:

Good things take time to catch on, and G.O.A.T. has certainly been out there for quite some time. All the same, I believe that his album is likely to be the source. As we know, the 57 year-old’s career has been a successful one, spanning fields of Hollywood, and presently ranks with some of the best musicians turned actors. So, the claim isn’t that far fetched over here.

Outside of the G.O.A.T. lore, LL Cool J has been popping up multiple times over on the 2025 TV guide. He returned to the NCISverse earlier this year, and, as mentioned, created the historic deep dive series Hip Hop Was Born Here which explores the origins of the genre and its lasting cultural impact. And after learning a shred of this term’s history from the G.O.A.T. artist, I think I know what I’ll be doing later this evening.

Watching Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary special during the early days of the 2025 TV schedule was so fun. Mostly, that was because of all the amazing sketches. However, it was also very entertaining to pause and look at the audience to spot people like Kevin Costner and Jenna Ortega sitting in the same section, because where else would you see something like that? However, apparently, there’s a downside to having a stacked crowd, as Pete Davidson explained why they had a “terrible audience” at SNL 50.

This note came up when Seth Meyers asked Davidson on an episode of Late Night if it was more nerve-wracking to be in a live sketch or watch a pre-taped sketch with an audience. His immediate response to that question was:

Throughout this explanation, and as you can see above, Meyers was agreeing with Davidson. He also cracked a wicked joke afterward, saying that his guest was the only person laughing at his Chad sketch from SNL 50.

Now, in the pre-tape sketch for “Chad in 8H,” which also features OG cast member Laraine Newman, you can hear laughter:

However, we viewers weren't in the room. So, really, we don't know what the vibe was like live.

While we don't really know what it was like to play in that room, we do know how down to clown various A-listers were throughout both this special and the Homecoming Concert. Sabrina Carpenter was at SNL 50, and she took part in the viral Domingo sketch with a bunch of alums from the show, including Andy Samberg, Beck Bennett and Maya Rudolph, and beloved hosts and guests like Pedro Pascal and Bad Bunny.

Speaking of Bad Bunny, he was one of many major celebs who also took part in the homage to some of The Lonely Island’s most iconic digital shorts during the Homecoming Concert. While he sang an operatic version of “I Just Had Sex,” Lady Gaga belted a rendition of “Dick in a Box.”

Oh! And Meryl Streep made her SNL debut during the 50th anniversary. She was part of the “Close Encounter 50th” sketch alongside Jon Hamm, Woody Harrelson, Pedro Pascal, Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant.

Speaking of Streep, while Davidson wasn’t the biggest fan of performing to that crowd at SNL 50, he did enjoy sitting next to the legendary actress. He explained:

Well, while he may not have been the biggest fan of performing for this crowd, I’m happy Pete Davidson had fun sitting in it. Personally, I can’t even imagine sitting in the same room as Meryl Streep, so the notion of randomly being placed next to her is truly wild. However, it also sounds wonderful.

To that point, I’d imagine a room like SNL 50 is hard to play because it’s intimidating too. It’s full of comedians who made the show what it is, along with a ton of the biggest actors, performers and celebrities working.

However, they handled it all very well, and this show was a massive success. Now, we’re making our way toward SNL Season 51, and hopefully those audiences can be Pete Davidson-approved.

Though a quick glance at the 2025 TV schedule may not immediately indicate the current in-flux nature of late night TV talk shows, recent headlines are pretty clear about laying out troublesome indications. CBS dropped the cancellation axe on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, causing its host (and South Park) to go semi-scorched earth on parent company Paramount Global’s merger with Skydance Media, with at least one more host possibly in the crosshairs. But what about his friendly rivals on other networks like Jimmy Fallon?

On the surface, The Tonight Show’s future looks pretty set in stone, as does Late Night with Seth Meyers, given that both shows are part of NBCUniversal and aren’t in the Paramount family. But considering Meyers has gone just as hard as Colbert has on political comedy and commentary in recent years, with Fallon taking more of a softball approach, is it possible the entirety of late night TV will come to a grinding halt before Donald Trump leaves office again?

Why The Tonight Show And Late Night Are Likely Safe (For Now)

Over a year before CBS' Late Show decision, both Seth Meyers and Jimmy Fallon negotiated contract extensions that, barring any major discreptancies, will keep them on the air for several more years. In May 2024, Meyers extended his deal to keep hosting Late Night through 2028, while also extending his and Mike Shoemaker's production company Sethmaker Shoemeyers' overall deal with Universal Studio Group.

Meanwhile, in June 2024, Fallon made a similar deal that will keep The Tonight Show going until at least 2028. At the time, the SNL vet voiced the wild hope that he aimed to stick around the late night scene for as long as Johnny Carson, who famously hosted The Tonight Show for 30 years. Granted, both of those extensions happened before Donald Trump returned to the White House and started getting litigious with TV networks.

Another reason why Jimmy Fallon's late night future seems fairly safe is that he's also invested in a pair of NBC's current and upcoming unscripted primetime offerings. He's an executive producer on the recently debuted and Martin Short-hosted game show Password, where he'll also be part of the celebrity panels.

As well, he's hosting the new reality competition series On Brand with Jimmy Fallon, which will pit marketing professionals against each other involving consumer-based challenges like commercial jingles, product designs and more. The show will debut in the fall and will air on both Tuesday and Friday nights.

Why Some Are Still Worried About The Tonight Show And Late Night's Futures

Perhaps the biggest factor here is just the worry that anything seemingly set in stone can suddenly get upended, as it went with The Late Show. But it isn't just the fates of other shows that has sparked concerns.

One of CBS and Paramount's biggest reported reasons for cancelling The Late Show is tied to the show's allegedly dismal financial situation. Colbert doesn't produce the kind of viral social media clips that bring extra eyeballs and advertisers to Fallon, Meyers and Jimmy Kimmel's shows. But while those do give the NBC shows an advantage, both series took money-saving creative hits in 2024 after contract extensions were made.

As one insider reminded Page Six, that was the point when NBC cut back on episode counts for The Tonight Show, with Jimmy Fallon no longer recording episodes five days a week.

What's more, Late Night with Seth Meyers' band members (as fronted by Fred Armisen) were given the pink slip in 2024 as a cost-saving measure. It would appear that both of those decisions were good enough to keep both shows running normally otherwise, but how long with that homeostasis stay intact before producers are required to find other elements to snip out?

Another element at play here is that Donald Trump's influence and outrage have largely revolved around CBS and Paramount in recent weeks. But if that attention should get redirected at NBCUniversal, it's possible that his actions could lead to NBC execs making difficult decisions with its two remaining late night staples.

Again, though, all seems safe for now, so there's no better time to celebrate it, even as Colbert's friends, former co-workers and current staffers are airing their grief about The Late Show ending in 2026.

DCU Chapter 1 is off and running, as the first feature film set in the continuity, James Gunn’s Superman, is currently making waves. This marks a solid start for a brand-new continuity, which the DC Studios co-head is hoping will be filled to the brim with superheroes at some point. At present, though, Seth Meyers received some keen insight into why Gunn and co. decided to make Clark Kent the lead of the franchise’s first solo film. Nevertheless, I’m more intrigued by the exec bringing up Matt Reeves’ The Batman when answering.

What Did James Gunn Say To Seth Meyers About Superman And The Batman?

During the press tour for his 2025 movie release, James Gunn stopped by Late Night to chat with the program’s host, who happens to be a fan of superheroes and comic books. Seth Meyers astutely pointed out the fact that Gunn decided to go with Supes for his first major big-screen production instead of going for a lesser known character. (That latter route was, of course, taken by Marvel Studios out of necessity.) Gun proceeded to explain that the decision was greatly motivated by historical precedence:

Considering the logic that the Guardians of the Galaxy director shared during the interview (which is on YouTube), it makes sense as to why he wanted to start with Clark Kent. I’ve also seen the DCU movie for myself, and I have to say that it serves as a great first movie for this continuity. It not only gives audiences a firm introduction to this latest iteration of the Man of Steel, but it also firmly establishes the world in which he exists. Of course, as that cinematic universe takes shape, there’s been continued talk about the Bat-verse.

How Are Things Going With Matt Reeves’ Batman Franchise?

Like so many other fans, I’ve been enamored with what Matt Reeves and his collaborators have managed to do with the world of The Batman. The IP’s continued popularity is why so many have been curious about what lies ahead – and why I couldn’t help but make note of the fact that James Gunn mentioned it during his interview. On the surface, it seems Gunn merely mentioned it as a way of clarifying that the film was already in the works when he and Peter Safran took over the reins at DC.

There are many admirers who are hoping for more, though. Many have specifically been crossing their fingers that Robert Pattinson’s Batman joins the DCU and teams up with David Corenswet’s Superman. Matt Reeves himself addressed that possibility, saying that it “really comes down to whether or not it makes sense.” James Gunn, on the other hand, has been cagey, especially since his new continuity will have a Dark Knight, who will headline the film The Brave and the Bold.

With that, fans probably shouldn’t take the Super helmer’s comments during his interview with Seth Meyers as nothing more than mere excitement for the upcoming sequel. The Batman: Part II is in the works, and a major update on the project arrived this past June, at which point it was revealed that the script had been completed. Plot details are being kept under wraps right now, though it’s known that the film will hit theaters in late 2027.

Regardless of which characters cross over with each other, I’m excited for what lies ahead when it comes to DC-related content. The world of late night TV was hit with a major shakeup when CBS canceled The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The move not only felt like it held a mirror to the current financial situation at Paramount in the midst of the Skydance merger, but also a mirror to the state of late night at large. Whether the cancellation was purely financial as CBS has claimed or politically motivated as has been rumored over the last week, other late night hosts have taken stock of the current climate for late night talk shows. Ahead of all that, though, Seth Meyers shared his thoughts on the future of late night

Meyers, who has hosted Late Night with Seth Meyers for 11 years, recently opened up about his own fears surrounding the shifting late night landscape. This conversation was had on an episode of Armchair Expert, which was recorded before The Late Show's cancellation was revealed to the public. Amid the chat, Meyers admitted that his show’s longevity fears have shifted since he first started hosting his show in 2014, and he’s recognized he has less power over his own fate than he once did:

The basic idea here is that if Late Night were to be canceled, it likely wouldn’t have anything to do with Seth Meyers' talent as a host, but rather the declining popularity of late night in general. This was seemingly the case for Colbert. The debate over the political content of the show aside, all late-night shows have seen declining viewership in recent years. Some numbers indicate Colbert’s show was losing $40 million dollars a year, which still isn’t a reflection of the show’s quality, considering Colbert led in ratings and was just nominated for an Emmy for the previous season.

While doomsday may feel like it’s on the horizon for late-night talk shows in general, Meyers has taken some solace in knowing that if his show was cancelled, he would be okay in a lot of ways. The former Saturday Night Live writer and actor explained just why that would be the case:

Outside of his late night show, Meyers has two podcasts. He has one with his brother called Family Trips with the Meyers Brothers where they talk to other celebrities about trips they took with their families growing up. He also does a podcast with The Lonely Island titled The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast, on which the group recaps digital shorts produced during their time at SNL.

Additionally, Meyers' recent stand-up special, Dad Man Walking, received a lot of buzz after becoming available with an HBO Max subscription. He also has an ongoing residency with fellow late night host John Oliver at the Beacon Theater in New York City. So, overall, even if this CBS cancellation is truly the marker of the end of a late-night era, Meyers will be fine in the long run, at least personally.

Still, this latest late-night programming shift brings into question where the medium at large will go moving forward. Will it shift primarily to podcasting, or will it turn into something more longform like David Letterman’s Netflix show? Or maybe it will become increasingly more gimmicky, like Hot Ones or Chicken Shop Date. The industry is clearly changing, but how that evolution will unfold in the long run has still yet to be seen.

Saturday Night Live has been an institution on NBC for five decades now, and Seth Meyers was around for one glorious decade+ of that run. However, if you were to ask him, joining Studio 6H was not the best time of his life; instead, it was his forties that have stood out the most so far. He didn't hesitate to share his feelings on the matter during a recent Q&A.

Amidst a recent chat with the audience, Meyers got candid about how 40 was the big turning point in his personal life and career. This was marked by the ending of his tenure on Saturday Night Live just and his switch to late night a little less than a year later, a move which was announced before he even left the late night sketch comedy series. On the home front, he married Alexi Ashe in 2013, and they had kids in 2016, 2018 and 2021.

In short, it was a big decade for the comedian who noted (via NBC Insider):

A lot of millennials --even of the celebrity variety -- are turning 40 these days and the milestone, at least for me, comes with mixed feelings and emotions. Regardless, according to Meyers, your forties are great and should be a time to look forward to and be celebrated as a whole.

This honestly squares with some comments Seth Meyers made earlier this year when he was talking to Howard Stern about SNL50. The shock jock made a comment that the former head writer was happiest on the sketch show and he disagreed, noting,

If I could have written out on paper which is more exciting: day drinking with celebrities on Late Night or working wild hours for part of the year on SNL, the sexier answer is definitely the sketch comedy series. However, there's something to be said for being more settled in your career, and I do hear Lorne Michaels can be an intimidating presence.

Meyers has said before it's also a breeding ground for insecurities, and even when he briefly came back for SNL50, he felt that tug of: "I don't belong here." Even after "ten years of reflection and personal growth" the second "one thing" went wrong, he flipped out. He's previously said he's still holding onto some stressful memories during his time on SNL, too, and he's certainly not the only famous name to speak out about fears and insecurities with being on the sketch show.

While prior to hearing the Late Night host's words, I probably would have guessed the time Meyers spent on Saturday Night Live with its new guest hosts, musical guests and creative ideas each week, would have been his best decade. But it turns out, the grass is truly greener on the other side.

One of the funniest recurring characters in SNL history to this day is Bill Hader’s Stefon, thanks to all his off-the-wall recommendations for the hottest clubs, events and destinations in New York City. To this day, Seth Meyers still gets asked about working alongside Hader when he was playing this character, because he was the one sitting next to him at the Weekend Update Desk. Now, the Late Night host has revealed his favorite moment with Stefon and why it made them both emotional.

When the SNL alum answered audience questions on his show Late Night With Seth Meyers, the host was asked to break down his favorite memory with Stefon. He started to recall a sweet moment with Hader while explaining which episode sticks out to him the most. In his words:

Meyers went on to recall a sketch called “Stefon’s Farewell,” which aired on NBC on May 18, 2013. This particular edition of Stefon, happened during Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, Jason Sudeikis and more's final episode. Meyers also noted that he knew he’d be soon transitioning to late night, and he had just half of a season left of being on the sketch show. As he continued:

This was an all-time great Stefon moment. In the hilarious bit, Seth Meyers runs off to stop a wedding between Stefon and Anderson Cooper, which was a pre-taped part of the show. So, while that was playing for the audience, here’s what was happening behind the scenes for the two SNL cast members, as Meyers recalled:

How sweet! Bill Hader was saying goodbye to a job he’d had since 2005 at that moment, and Meyers knew it was in the cards for him soon after joining back in 2001. He also said this:

One might have thought Meyers’ favorite moment would have to do with some funny instance where they broke up laughing (did you know the reason why Hader actually covered his face as Stefon was because Meyers would make him laugh?) Seth Meyers has a lot to celebrate professionally in recent years, with the Seth Meyers: Dad Man Walking available streaming now with an HBO Max subscription and the late night TV format not yet running out of steam despite dire predictions from Jimmy Kimmel. He may not have felt so celebratory back in December 2012, when he was still a writer and cast member for SNL, and... well, he learned that his usual brand of sketch comedy is best kept to the stages of 30 Rock. Speaking with THR, Meyers said:

For context, the SNL stars weren't sharing the event with just Chris Rock and The Who, although those were already big enough names to overshadow Seth Meyers in his Weekend Update persona and Bobby Moynihan as Drunk Uncle. 12-12-12: The Concert for Sandy Relief took place at Madison Square Garden in December 2012, for the purpose of raising money for victims of the devastating Hurricane Sandy.

Musicians performing included (but were not limited to) Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Chris Martin, Eddie Vedder, Kanye West, and Roger Waters, plus, the surviving members of Nirvana for the first time in nearly two decades with none other than Paul McCartney. Throw in appearances from Billy Crystal, Jamie Foxx, and yes, Chris Rock, and... well, having gone back and watched the sketch from 2012, I can see why Seth Meyers considers it the hardest he's ever bombed. There's a time and place for sketch comedy, and that just wasn't it.

Somewhat hilariously, Jamie Foxx was part of THR's interview as well, and he couldn't remember if he'd even been there other than recalling the performance from The Who. Meyers laughed and responded, saying, "The Who, Arcade Fire … it’s weird that you don’t remember us." It's clearly all in good fun looking back from 2025, but I understand why Meyers credited Bill Hader's decision not to play Stefon as a wise choice.

Fortunately, after more than ten years at SNL and one flopped event, Meyers has only gone onward and upward from the hardest he "ever" bombed. Despite NBC's cuts to Late Night as well as The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Meyers renewed his deal with the network through 2028. Plus, the ill-advised sketch was long enough ago that few people likely remember it if he doesn't bring it up... except perhaps for Bobby Moynihan.

The landscape of entertainment is always changing, as anyone can see through the ins and outs of the 2025 TV schedule. But if there’s any sector that feels that sort of uncertainty more than others, it’s late night programming. While the most notable examples we’ve seen are stories like The Tonight Show’s episode cuts, it hasn’t gotten too apocalyptic out there. But between Jimmy Kimmel’s recent prediction, and Seth Meyers’ take on where late night is going, any aspiring talk show hosts may want to adjust their expectations.

Jimmy Kimmel’s Late Night Prediction Puts The Format At Odds With The Internet

It sucks to hear it, but according to Jimmy Kimmel Live’s own host, we may be down to one late night show on network TV within the next 10 years. Making this prediction as part of an interview with the podcast Politickin' with Gavin Newsom, Marshawn Lynch, and Doug Hendrickson, ABC’s own stalwart of the format doesn’t see a rosy future for the landscape that Johnny Carson, among others, helped pioneer. But when you read his reasons why, it sadly makes total sense:

What’s even crazier is the fact that thanks to the viewing patterns of audiences these days, Jimmy Kimmel believes that the internet has also reduced the level of competition among his contemporaries. So while you’ll still see fans ranking late night hosts, and ratings reports trumpeting who’s on top this week, folks like Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon aren’t duking it out like Letterman and Leno were in the ‘90s.

As far as Seth Meyers’ thoughts on the matter are concerned, he does back Mr. Kimmel’s call. But while he also has his own bittersweet reflection on his career's path, he does show some signs of optimism.

Seth Meyers’ Take On Late Night’s Future Is Reverent, But Optimistic

A separate interview with Variety, on behalf of his stand-up special Dad Man Walking, saw Seth Meyers falling in line with his ABC counterpart. The NBC host of Late Night with Seth Meyers even went as far as touting Jimmy Kimmel as the host who best understands the current late night machine.

Reflecting on the potential decline of late night, Meyers showed his gratitude for how he entered the game, and how he's "bummed" for those who want to be the next late night hit but won't have that specific shot in the future. But he did temper that outlook with this bit of optimistic thinking:

It really is a crossroads moment for late night TV fans, especially those who grew up in the waning Carson years. With events like After Midnight's cancellation leaving CBS without a post-Colbert program, as well as Jimmy Kimmel's own continued talks of retirement, we may be seeing a new age unfolding yet again.

To see the medium shift so far from those halcyon days is sad, but even with Meyers and Jimmy Kimmel’s prognosis in mind, it’s comforting to know that topical comedy will always find an audience. The only real change may be the format, and the venue it’s presented. For now, you can find Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC, weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET, and Late Night with Seth Meyers on NBC at 12:35 p.m. ET.

Throughout the history of Saturday Night Live, there have been some truly iconic sketches filmed at Studio 8H. “James Brown’s Celebrity Hot Tub,” “More Cowbell” and (the viral) Beavis and Butt-Head” sketches are among the most famous. While a number of the show’s vignettes may manage to penetrate the cultural zeitgeist, there are some that maybe don’t receive as much attention years after they air. As it turns out, there’s actually at least one sketch that series EP Lorne Michaels hated.

Seth Meyers brought up an interesting relic from SNL’s past during a recent installment of The Lonely Island with Seth Meyers podcast. During the chat, he asked his co-hosts if they remembered the “Lamps” sketch, which was performed when Hugh Laurie hosted in December 2008 amid Season 34. Meyers reached out to former head writer Rob Klein about the skit, which involved singing lamps, to receive his and co-writer Andy Samberg’s “side of the story,” and Klein didn’t hold back when sharing his recollections via voice note:

Well, that last sentiment is certainly spine-tingling. “Lamps” isn’t available alongside the best SNL clips on YouTube, but it can be streamed as part of the whole episode with a Peacock subscription. The segment focuses on a lamp store populated by lamps (Andy Samberg, Kristen Wiig and Hugh Laurie), who come to life and sing once the shopkeepers (Fred Armisen and Michaela Watkins) have left for the day. In this instance though, the owners catch them lamps, who then go to extreme measures to maintain their secret.

Rob Klein explained that the sketch was pitched during a week in which there were plenty of excellent sketch ideas on the board. Adding to that pressure was the fact that fellow writers were apparently already “pissed off” by the title of the bit. And, if that weren’t enough, the big man in charge also took issue with the concept:

Lorne Michaels has historically never been one to mince words when it comes to the creative direction of the long-running NBC show, whether it be cast changes or the handling of politically driven bits. As has been revealed, Michaels previously even disliked recurring segments on the show, though he later changed his mind on that. I can’t even imagine being in Rob Klein and Andy Samberg’s shoes when it comes to “Lamps.” Michaels was evidently curious (or worried) about its reception and even uncharacteristically watched the blocking for the sketch.

Against all odds, though, the sketch made it to air. It wasn’t exactly easy for the actors, as they had to wear the hefty lamp costumes. Still, Rob Klein said “Lamps” is one sketch “we'll never live down.” After he finished playing the voice note, Seth Meyers made a comment about how Andy Samberg still feels the effects of the sketch today:

Despite how the creatives behind the sketch feel about “Lamps,” it’s still a part of Saturday Night Live history and might be lovingly remembered as a sketch that is somehow both terrible and amazing. And that’s whether or not Lorne Michaels likes it or not. Saturday Night Live is getting a new spinoff in the UK, and while that's exciting to some, one notable UK celebrity isn't as thrilled. John Oliver is always good at giving stark commentary with some biting wit, whether it be talking about pro wrestler names or Fall Out Boy covering a classic song. So, it totally makes sense that Seth Meyers would want to know his thoughts on SNL coming to the UK, though I'm not sure he expected such a thumbs-down response.

Before being the host of Late Night With Seth Meyers, the titular host was one of the longest-serving cast members on Saturday Night Live. John Oliver wasn't on SNL, but as one of the more famous English comedians in the United States. Therefore, they seemed like two people qualified to discuss the upcoming spinoff. So, Meyers asked Oliver his thoughts on SNL UK during an episode of Late Night, and unfortunately, the Last Week Tonight host wasn't too jazzed about it, saying:

Last Week Tonight often revolves around John Oliver delivering depressing news about the state of the world, so I doubt he was phased at all about telling Seth Meyers he wasn't into the idea of Saturday Night Live launching in the UK. I'd say maybe he'd have some fear of how Lorne Michaels (who is an EP for the spinoff) or others at NBCUniversal would respond to him saying that on their network. However, given that he's in the habit of not attending celebrity parties, I doubt he'll ever have to rub shoulders with them.

At the same time, Seth Meyers wasn't going to let John Oliver drop that remark without some sort of explanation. As usual, Oliver had a valid point to make and was able to inject a bit of humor into it to take the sting off shooting down the potential of a UK version of Saturday Night Live:

He has a point. While Saturday Night Live is an American institution with a long history and frequently generates interest with its celebrity hosts and musical guests, it's hardly the first show of its kind. There's nothing stopping any outfit from starting its own live sketch comedy series should it choose to do so, and John Oliver noted that it doesn't necessarily have to be under the SNL umbrella to be successful.

Of course, I don't think anyone can deny there's an appeal of having name recognition these days in Hollywood, and having the Saturday Night Live branding may help the UK series get off the ground as opposed to if it were a similar premise with an entirely different name. It might fail, but it also could be a hit, and wouldn't that be exciting?

Think of all the former SNL stars who returned to the series years later as celebrities who blew up thanks to the show? Having a UK-based show that offers the same kind of platform for young actors and comedians on the other side of the pond could be beneficial. And if the UK SNL ends up having international appeal, we may get a new wave of big-name stars from the region, similar to how we get them here.

Saturday Night Live UK is expected to begin in 2026, and if we're lucky, it will also get a critically-acclaimed movie about its first episode decades from now. Let's hope for some positive momentum on the way to its premiere and more reasons to get excited about this sketch series!

Before Colin Jost and Michael Che hosted Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live, Seth Meyers hosted between 2006 and 2014. He also served as a writer and one of the longest-lasting SNL cast members on the variety sketch series, beginning in 2001. Having worked at SNL for well over a decade, he’s certainly written a lot of sketches, but he apparently only wrote five that he knew would work. Now, he has finally revealed one of them.

While taking questions from audience members in a TikTok for Late Night with Seth Meyers, one fan asked the host what his favorite SNL sketch was. After getting clarification that the answer could be either for a sketch that he performed or wrote, he went on to tell a story involving Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. With them, he knew he had a hit on his hands, despite being pretty nervous about it, as he said:

Both Poehler and Fey have portrayed Clinton and Palin on more than one occasion, and to this day, these sketches remain some of the most memorable. In fact, the sketch "Sarah Palin and Hillary Address the Nation" is considered one of SNL's best cold opens.

So, I think Seth Meyers' victorious feelings about the sketch he wrote both before and after it happened were warranted.

If I had to guess which specific Palin/Clinton sketch the late-night host was referencing, I'd put my money on "Sarah Palin and Hillary Address the Nation." The sketch aired in 2008 during the Season 34 premiere. It featured Poehler as Clinton and Fey as Palin as they addressed the American public about sexism, the 2008 presidential election, global warming, and their many disagreements. The video currently has 6 million views on YouTube, and at the time, it was highly talked about.

However, there's also a chance he was speaking about any of the other times the two women took the stage as the political figures too.

Now, I want to know the other four sketches he knew would kill. However, he didn't divulge that information...yet.

Meyers has, however, returned to the Weekend Update desk for the SNL50: The Anniversary Special, and it was like nothing had changed. He still occasionally talks about SNL too on Late Night, including telling a story about working with Kermit the Frog and punching a hole in his office wall. And I would give anything to get a whole book about his experience.

Since Meyers frequently takes questions from his studio audience at Late Night with Seth Meyers, it’s very likely there will be more stories to come about his days at SNL. Hopefully, that means we'll learn more about these five sketches at some point. However, in the meantime, you can watch both Late Night and SNL as they air on the 2025 TV schedule on NBC or with a Peacock subscription.

SNL50 went off with seemingly very few hitches given the myriad celebrities who were roped in (either willingly or unwillingly) and the many, many OG players who worked to punch up characters they maybe hadn’t played in years, if not decades. But just because things went off swimmingly doesn’t mean there weren’t a few things about the making of the special the cast found to be a little ridiculous.

For Andy Samberg (2005-2012) it was the tagline. You may have seen it prior to the release of the special anniversary episode: “A Special 50 Years In The Making.” It’s catchy, I’ll give you that. But Samberg just could not get over NBC's marketing campaign:

Samberg and Seth Meyers (2001-2014) were chatting about the special during an episode of their podcast “The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers” when the story about how the episode actually was thrown together (compared to how NBC was selling it) came up. While Samberg was amused by the tagline, Meyers pushed back a little. In fact, the longtime writer firmly believed that actually, the tagline’s fudging of the truth made it even more accurate. Or as he put it, it was “thrown together like the rest of the show.”

Hilarious. Samberg went on to explain how SNL50 came together, and it sounds like a bit of a sloppy mess, but for anyone who saw Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night, this is just the way Lorne Michaels’ long-running sketch comedy series likes it.

It’s also not like everyone had a literal year to put the episode together, right? I’d imagine that some people, Lorne Michaels included, put thought into what people and sketches would be brought back months in advance, but it’s not like anything was finalized until the last minute, which is pretty typical for Saturday Night Live.

Andy Samberg also made the germane point that one major reason the special wasn’t literally “50 years” in the making was because so many people involved with the show were still doing regular SNL episodes every single week. The main Not Ready For Primetime Players, the writers, and all the BTS folks involved with the show had to put together an episode of brand new material for Timothèe Chalamet like three weeks before they busted out the star-studded affair.

We’d be here all day if I listed the long list of people who appeared onscreen during the episode, but they were not limited to the current cast. A sample? There was Chris Rock, Mike Myers, Tracy Morgan, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively (in a bit of a controversial cameo), Jason Momoa, Jenna Ortega, a tattoo-free-ish Pete Davidson, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler (who had one of the most poignant moments the whole night), Bill Murray (who ranked all the Weekend Update hosts), Scarlett Johansson, Kristin Wiig, Sabrina Carpenter, Maya Rudolph, Paul Rudd, John Mulaney, Chris Parnell, Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Bad Bunny, Tim Meadows, Kim Kardashian and I could go on and on. Suffice to say, a lot of spinning plates were involved.

There’s no doubt it was an epic night of television, but it still cracks me up that Andy Samberg could not get over how over-the-top the tagline was compared to the haphazard way it all came together. It's a pretty perfect story about a show that's never actually able to be perfect due to its live nature.

We’ve been living in the age of technology for years now, and with AI creeping its way into every facade of life, it stands out that some late-night hosts are still using cue cards in the year 2025. But there’s a good reason why Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and even Conan O’Brien have refused to retire cue cards in favor of teleprompters, and Saturday Night Live plays a big role in that decision.

Meyers addressed the popular question a few weeks ago during a question and answer session with one of his Late Night audiences. Via Instagram, the Weekend Update alum started off his answer by introducing the audience to Wally Feresten, the infamous cue card holder/writer, before saying:

The variety sketch show, which just celebrated its 50th anniversary, has been using cue cards since the show began. While SNL isn't without its own mistakes, rare is it ever the fault of the cue cards, which is probably why so many alumni and current cast members continue to swear by them.

It’s not just loyalty to Wally — who also works on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon — that keeps Meyers and other late-night hosts from ditching the cue cards in favor of technological advances like the teleprompter, but rather the safety net the cards provide. Meyers elaborated:

These are all very valid concerns that have caused problems for teleprompter-only productions like the 2017 Golden Globes, where the teleprompter broke on Fallon, and silence followed for several seconds until production could fix the problem. With such bad experiences stemming from teleprompters, it’s no surprise that these SNL vets rely on tried and true cue cards to get their shows done.

Of course, accidents can happen with cue cards, too, but it’s likely a much easier and quicker fix than having to wait for a teleprompter to be repaired while the cameras roll. After all, all cue card users have to worry about is human error, and a professional like Wally isn’t going to let that happen. And if something were to happen to him, well, Meyers can explain his backup plan:

All jokes aside, cue cards really do provide some comfort to those who work with them — especially when Wally is the one behind the giant cards. Next time you watch one of the late-night shows or even an upcoming episode of Saturday Night Live, keep your eyes peeled for Wally and his team of cue card holders.

Some of the greatest feuds in the world of entertainment are ones that blur the lines of reality. We’ve seen the likes of Jimmy Kimmel and Matt Damon, as well as Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman duking it out in the past, and now the 2025 TV schedule has reminded us of an entry that needs to be in the conversation. Apparently there’s beef between SNL vet Andy Samberg and former co-star Seth Meyers’ dog, Frisbee. The NBC late night host has shared a story that makes me question if this is really a bit, or a bitter truth.

If you follow Late Night with Seth Meyers on social media, you may have seen a video where someone asked him about the “Samberg v. Frisbee” feud, and if the former Weekend Update anchor hates anything nearly as much. Here's part of Seth Meyers’ story about this furry fury:

In researching this supposed beef, I had to look up what I could about Samberg v. Frisbee, and I had no idea that this is something that has spanned over years. Not quite as long as the Kimmel/Damon “feud,” but at the very least this has existed since 2020. Maybe it’s because I don’t think that people would beef with a creature as adorable as Frisbee, but it was a blindspot for me.

Thanks to the power of YouTube, I’ve now seen the saga unfold, and…yeah, this is totally a bit. You can’t watch Andy Samberg and Seth Meyers riff on the subject of this Italian Greyhound and take it the least bit seriously.

But if there was a clip that could confuse newcomers, it would definitely have to be the below Instagram video. I don't know about you, but for me, this counts as a great dramatic performance from an SNL star:

Now that we’ve all taken this journey together, we can enjoy Andy Samberg’s slams on Frisbee as much as we do the faux feud between Ryan Reynolds. and Hugh Jackman. Unless we actually see that Christmas card shown on screen, that is, in which case it might be the time to question things a bit.

Either that, or it's time to give Seth Meyers another primetime special to address the matter head on, putting Andy Samberg and Frisbee in a room together for the ultimate showdown. Someone should book Lester Holt to moderate, before he leaves the building.

Andy Samberg has been a Saturday Night Live icon for years, and he absolutely crushed it while being heavily featured during the SNL 50 broadcast. Specifically, the former Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor starred in a sketch about SNL cast members all having anxiety, which Samberg has been candid about experiencing as a cast member, and it's gone viral. After the broadcast, he reunited with some of the biggest names in the show’s history and got a chance to chat with Billy Crystal. So, Samberg took the opportunity to ask about Crystal’s experience with anxiety during his time on the show, and he offered interesting insight.

After the historic television event on the 2025 TV schedule, Andy Samberg and the rest of The Lonely Island recapped their night on The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast. Samberg mentioned chatting with Billy Crystal after his “Anxiety” sketch, which is quickly becoming one of the best SNL digital shorts. He asked the comedian if he ever felt the nerves during his brief stint as a cast member, explaining:

The SNL work environment is famously intense, especially considering the stressful production schedule and writing traditions that involve pulling all-nighters in the days leading up to the show. The situation has been known to give cast members anxiety, and many have opened up about their mental health during their time on the show.

For example, Bill Hader has been very vocal about his anxiety while starring on SNL, and the experience was relatable enough to result in a whole sketch about the live-TV stress.

However, not many of the older cast members have talked about it, and Seth Meyers was curious if other people experienced this as well. He said:

Upon reflection, Samberg realized that the pressures he and his fellow cast members had during their tenures were very different from what Crystal went through in the '80s.

The Palm Springs actor explained that the When Harry Met Sally star was a part of one of the best single-season SNL casts, but it was mostly made up of established comedians at the time, who had careers outside the show. As a result, there probably wasn’t as much pressure. He explained:

This was a stark difference from what modern SNL looks like, where the cast is made up mostly of unknown comic minds hoping that the NBC sketch show will be their big break. Their airtime and ability to stay on the show is contingent on how many sketches they are in, the virality of their characters, and their ability to write sketches that end up making the show. It is incredibly tense, and naturally results in some mental health challenges.

Even with anxious cast members, SNL still manages to be funny and relevant every week. The 50th anniversary special might be over, but the show still has plenty of exciting hosts and musical guests for the 50th season to get excited about, so make sure to check out SNL on Saturday at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC. SNL’s 50th Anniversary celebration was filled with memorable moments on Saturday night, from the return (and subsequent drama behind) “Black Jeopardy” with Tom Hanks to Jenna Ortega memorably getting squished. But the whole weekend was an experience for the longtime cast members on the show, as Friday night’s SNL50: The Homecoming Concert also brought in a slew of major names for performances, veteran Andy Samberg included.

In fact, in an iconic moment, he busted out his longtime hit “Dick in a Box” with Lady Gaga, a moment that immediately went viral and was discussed in the days following. This subsequently led into a Digital Short medley that was one of the highlights of the evening.

But, how did Lady Gaga even get involved given she wasn’t the OG “Dick in a Box” singer? And why was Justin Timberlake missing? Thankfully, Andy Samberg addressed this and more in his story of how SNL50 Concert came together.

How Lady Gaga Got Involved With Dick In A Box

Samberg’s less active with SNL than he has been in the past, but his podcast with Seth Meyers, aptly titled “The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers,” addressed how the whole thing came together. Honestly, there was way less preparation in advance than I would have guessed.

The Lonely Island frontman said that’s because they were not doing any new material really. So, it was only a week before the project came to fruition that Lady Gaga even became involved as a musical guest on the docket.

To be clear, Samberg was stoked to create the opportunity with the A Star Is Born actress and pop singer, and they even nodded at her movie gig before the “Dick in a Box” bit. It was very funny. You’d never guess it by the final version that played out onstage, but Samberg was a bit intimidated about working with Gaga.

Why Justin Timberlake Was Out And Lady Gaga, Bad Bunny And Eddie Vedder Were In

Lady Gaga may have been a great get, but Andy Samberg says she only came into the picture after Justin Timberlake declined; the former concurrent SNL host and musical guest currently on his Forgot Tomorrow World Tour. Then other big names got added, including singer (and sometimes WWE star) Bad Bunny, Pear Jam’s Eddie Vedder (in cosplay) and T-Pain, who tragically did not bring a pashmina afghan.

Missing Justin was a bit of a bummer, but Seth Meyers said the medley end result was fantastic, and that largely had to do with those involved --s/o Eddie Vedder -- who really committed to the bit. Meyers said that's really a key to being involved with SNL in general; when people who are not comedians "get the game," the end result is always better.

While Samberg said the songs being written already made things easier, it was actually fairly difficult to rehearse and everyone put in a lot of effort. The medley itself was complicated to compose, and Gaga even had some trouble with learning "the piano parts," so it wasn't just "a given" they could all show up and just execute with no work. It all turned out great, however, and it ended up being one of the highlights of the night.

SNL50: The Anniversary Special aired this past Sunday, and to say that it was eventful would be an understatement. Plenty of stars were present in Studio 8H to witness what was arguably one of the biggest events to hit the 2025 TV schedule thus far. The jokes were certainly flying as well, with Colin Jost delivering quite a zinger of his own. Jost’s jab centered around imprisoned rapper Sean “P. Diddy” Combs and was delivered during a special edition of Weekend Update, which also brought back veteran host Seth Meyers.

Early in the Weekend Update segment, Colin Jost addressed the fact that there were so many famous past hosts and musical guests in attendance. With that, he addressed that some people had to sit in the nearby Studio 8G as well as the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, at which point a photo of Diddy popped up. For those who aren’t aware, Sean Combs was arrested in September 2024 months after his homes were raided in connection to a federal investigation into sex-trafficking. He still remains in the aforementioned facility and is facing several federal charges as well as multiple lawsuits. At the same time, much has been said about Diddy’s wild parties or “Freak Offs.” As for how Combs connects to Saturday Night Live history, he famously performed on the show, once in 1998 and a second time with Diddy-Dirty Money in 2010.

The P. Diddy joke was far from the only notable aspect of this iteration of Weekend Update. Seth Meyers’ return was also a welcome surprise and fitting, considering he hosted the show within a show from 2006 to 2014. Veteran host Bill Murray also returned for a humorous bit that involved him ranking the best anchors in the segment’s history. Murray’s Colin Jost-less Top 10 featured his brother, Brian Doyle-Murray at No. 1.

And, if that weren’t all, some of the most iconic Weekend Update guests were on hand to ring in the festivities. One of them was Cecily Strong’s The Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started A Conversation With At A Party, who appeared pregnant (due to Strong’s real-life pregnancy). It was then hilariously revealed that the father of her child was the returning Drunk Uncle (played by Bobby Moynihan). On top of all that, Vanessa Bayer and Fred Armisen returned to play their recurring “best friends” characters, this time appearing as childhood chums of Lorne Michaels.

Everyone was honestly firing on all cylinders here, and some A+ stars were chosen to participate. It was particularly apt that Bobby Moynihan appeared, given that Colin Jost created and loves Drunk Uncle as a character. Honestly, the only elements that could have made this portion of the special better would’ve been an appearance from Bill Hader’s Stefon and/or a quick savage joke swap from Jost and Michael Che.

I won’t argue with what fans received, though, and everyone deserves a round of applause for making this special Weekend Update work. As for the Diddy joke specifically, I wouldn’t be surprised if more jokes are made at the rapper’s expense as his legal proceedings continue.

We’re all aware of the Staten Island Ferry Pete Davidson bought with Colin Jost. However, he recently revealed another large aquatic purchase he made – a ginormous fish tank for his house. The comedian shared the whole story behind it too, and it’s, as he said, “hilarious.”

Between his 2025 movie, Dog Man, and SNL’s 50th Anniversary slated on the 2025 TV schedule, Pete Davidson has been making the rounds on talk shows. During his stop at Late Night with Seth Meyers, he was asked if he had any pets. In response, he said he’s “allergic to all pets that would bring [him] happiness.” However, he does have a big fish tank that Meyers pointed out was clearly “installed” in his home. To that point, The King of Staten Island star explained the purchase, saying:

Last year, it was reported that Davidson had gone to rehab. Since coming home and getting back to work, he’s been sharing stories about choices he made before that and people who supported him through this time and throughout his career – like Lorne Michaels and John Mulaney.

While that is not a laughing matter, Davidson is a comedian, and he can get a good laugh out of the questionable decisions he made before he went to rehab. It would appear that the fish tank could be a consistent punch line in his life now, as he revealed just how often he has to get it cleaned:

As you can see in the video above, the tank is massive, and it makes sense that the Bupkis star has to get it cleaned frequently. To really emphasize that point, he told Seth Meyers:

Davidson explained that he thinks Norm the tank cleaner also cleans Tracy Morgan’s aquarium as well as his friend’s tank. So, while he may not have realized he had purchased this tank at first, he seems very invested in his fish.

Now, to make matters wilder, the SNL alum explained that the location of his aquarium is not ideal, because his front door can be slammed right into it. Therefore, he has to warn friends to be careful when they come to his house.

Overall, this fish tank sounds like an unintended massive part of the comedian's life, and it’s a story that is very funny in hindsight, as he said. So, as more of Davidson’s movies and shows come out, I hope we get some updates about his fish, because, like him and Norm, I’m invested and need to know more about his latest aquatic endeavor.

It’s been eleven years since Seth Meyers married Alexi Ashe. The gorgeous wedding was widely covered by the press at the time, but more than a decade later, it’s one of the speeches that people are still talking about. Comedian Will Forte stood up during the rehearsal dinner and fired off a six minute toast as Hamilton Whiteman, an obscure SNL character that’s “a neo-Nazi basically.” By all accounts, it went over well with some in the audience and not so well with others.

Among those it went over very well with were Ted Danson and Bill Hader. The two could not stop laughing as they reminisced about the speech on the Cheers star’s podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name. Danson said the bride’s family was “not amused” and Hader said he was laughing so hard you can hear him in the background of the wedding video losing his mind. Here’s a portion of Hader’s thoughts below…

A video clip of Danson and Hader talking about the speech has been widely shared on social media recently, but it’s not the only time the speech has been talked about in public. Meyers once had Forte on Late Night With Seth Meyers to talk about it, and they even showed a clip from the speech, which Meyers said was the only thirty seconds appropriate to air on network television.

Fortunately, Meyers was clearly amused by the whole thing, as there’s probably some expectation you’re gonna get weirdness if you invite Will Forte to your wedding. You can watch a clip of the two of them talking about it, as well as those thirty seconds from the actual wedding below…

The speech came up on the podcast because Danson and Hader were initially having a more general conversation about Forte. More specifically, they were talking about how he always wanted to do work that he liked and was more concerned about doing things that he considered good versus things the audience liked. Hader said it was a great lesson to see someone not be worried about outcome and instead focus on the process and what they were trying to say.

That really tracks with Forte, whose outrageous personal life stories and work tend to cover unusual ground. Something like MacGruber, especially the movie and TV show, were never going to hit with a wide audience (which is probably why Pepsi was hesitant to partner). The humor is really specific and creatively daring, and there’s nothing about it designed for broad appeal. You could say the same about a lot of Forte’s sketches on SNL too like say, Jeff Montgomery, a local man dressed as a sex offender on Halloween who may or may not actually be a sex offender or Tim Calhoun, a political candidate who gives speeches in an awkward tone of voice and with over the top political mannerisms.

Fortunately, there are plenty of fans out there who really get what Forte is trying to do and appreciate his humor, and there are also plenty of his fellow comedians who are on the same wavelength. After Forte’s big speech at the wedding, he was approached by his SNL co-star Andy Samberg who asked him to give a toast in character at his wedding too. Fingers crossed we get more info on what happened there someday.

Before becoming one of the best characters on Curb Your Enthusiasm and turning himself into a sought after comedic character actor, JB Smoove was a writer on Saturday Night Live. He was only there for a couple seasons, but many of the cast members and writers who overlapped with his tenure, talk about the wild ideas he pitched with great fondness. Now I can see why.

Smoove was recently on Kelly Ripa’s podcast, Let’s Talk Off Camera. Not surprisingly, the topic of SNL came up, as Ripa hosted the show while Smoove worked there. During their chat, he brought up a sketch he pitched for Johnny Knoxville, and it’s way too good not to share. Apparently he wrote a crime show sketch where the Jackass star would sniff people’s urine and use whatever he smelled to help solve the case. Here’s the elevator pitch he dropped in the writer’s room…

Smoove recounted the old pitch as part of a new pitch he was making to Ripa about what he’d do if he were ever asked to host the show. Apparently, he has a long list of all his favorite ideas he pitched for the show that never got on the air. He wants to act out bits of them during his opening monologue, which sounds absolutely amazing.

During his chat with Ripa, he brought up some other sketches that never made it to the air including Helicopter Family, which is about an entire family of helicopter pilots who all walk all hunched over and shout at each other at a high volume. If you think that sounds hilarious, you’re not alone. Seth Meyers, who was formerly the head writer at SNL, actually loved the sketch idea so much that he separately brought it up during an interview he did with Howard Stern in which he called Smoove the greatest Monday Morning pitcher in the history of the SNL writing room.

Unfortunately, Smoove wasn’t quite as successful with getting his sketches on the air. According to Meyers, it was mostly because so many of his sketches were hilarious ideas that were hard to stretch out for enough time. During the Ripa interview, Smoove said he also thinks he had trouble because he was mostly writing material that he personally thought would be funny and he’d be a good fit in, even if he wasn’t actually a cast member.

SNL has a long history of launching many of comedy’s biggest stars, but that doesn’t mean SNL actually used all those people to their full potential. The show’s alumni rolls are filled with a ton of famous faces who didn’t quite fit including Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr and of course, Smoove’s longtime co-star Larry David who once repackaged his own rejected pitch about replacing an answering machine tape into one of Seinfeld’s most famous bits.

Here’s to hoping Smoove gets his chance to host and we get an opportunity to fully appreciate all these amazing pitches that didn’t make the air. We don't know the rest of the hosts for Season 50; so, there's always a chance we could be in for a huge surprise.

When working on sets, whether it be for film or tv, one might encounter a puppet as their co-star. On paper you might not even think that there are different ways to approach the situation, because acting is acting no matter who the scene partner is. However, former SNL sketch star and head writer Seth Meyers has some pointers to share from when his co-star was the incomparable Kermit the Frog.

In a clip on Instagram from his interview with actor and comedian Brett Goldstein on his late night talk show, Seth Meyers talked about Goldstein's appearance on Sesame Street, with Goldstein going so far to as to call it “the best day of my life”. Shortly after, Meyers shared his own experience working with Kermit during his time on SNL. He was given some advice on how to work with the puppet, as Meyers said:

Actors in the past have shared their experiences working with iconic puppet characters. Star Wars’ Ewan McGregor, sharing his time with Yoda, claimed it to be a little unsettling when the cameras stopped rolling and the puppet lost its life. There are also the new challenges that come with using more practical effects like puppets, like the voice. Shows like Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance faced regarding the puppets and their voices having different actors than the puppeteers themselves.

Even the big frog Kermit himself, has had to have a few vocal changes over the years. For a few moments of pure fun, though, check out the clip of Seth Meyers and Brett Goldstein:

The world of practical effects feels like a mystery sometimes, but it is interesting to see that the best advice is to just look puppets in the eyes. I guess eyes really are the window to the soul, puppet or otherwise. It’s kind of funny in a way, seeing as both Meyers and Goldstein stated that once they looked into the puppets eyes they were, for lack of better words, lovestruck.

There’s perhaps no show in the history of television that has launched more comedic movie careers than Saturday Night Live. The beloved late night staple has catapulted at least a few dozen people to Hollywood stardom or at least a sustained period of key supporting roles. Maybe it’s the sketch format that allows the cast to show a lot of range. Maybe it’s the show’s long history of success that convinces casting directors to give these particular up and comers a shot. Whatever it is, it’s worked with consistency for fifty years… for a percentage of cast members.

That’s the thing. Everyone talks about Saturday Night Live churning out the Bill Murrays, Eddie Murphys and Will Ferrell’s, but the show has had more than a hundred and fifty cast members over the years and while most have done other things, the majority have not gotten starring roles in movies or their own TV shows. That can be a tough pill to swallow for those who don’t find Hollywood superstardom. Just ask Seth Meyers.

The late night host, who eventually found his place and landed a long-running talk show, recently stopped by NPR’s Wild Card for an interview, and during the chat, he got really honest about his acting career and the frustrations he felt. He watched many of his colleagues land big roles outside SNL, but despite auditioning on a regular basis, he just kept losing role after role until eventually, he had to admit he’s not very good at acting. Here’s a portion of his really honest quote…

For Meyers, it was a process of figuring out what exactly he was good at and what that could lead into. For most people in any career, it’s hard not to look at their peers or people who had the same job before them and envision a direct path of where they could go next. At Saturday Night Live, it’s very hard not to fall into that trap because your workplace is literally filled with photos of some of the most successful people in the history of show business who once worked on the exact same stage.

I know we all know the names, but let me just run down a quick list of some of the all-time greats who found huge success in Hollywood. John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Mike Myers, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, David Spade, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Jimmy Fallon, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis. It’s overwhelming to think about, but Meyers thinks it’s a mistake to focus on them and assume that’s what is in store for you too.

Finding your fit is the key. Every cast member needs to do that on the show itself including Meyers who eventually found his place as Weekend Update host and Head Writer. Sometimes that’s by being a steady hand that can get a laugh or two in a supporting role in other people’s sketches. Sometimes that’s by doing little bits on Weekend Update. Sometimes that’s by being the star of the really weird concept sketches that go on at the end of the night. You just need to keep trying until you find your place.

The same thing applies for after your time on the show is over too. The most literal path is working as an actor and, of course, trying to take the Adam Sandler track to superstardom, but a lot of SNL’s most famous alumni didn’t do things the conventional way including Meyers himself. He’s got his own late night show, which is a path quite a few others have gone down including Jimmy Fallon and Conan O’Brien. There are also a lot of SNL vets who found stardom going the stand-up route. Chris Rock is probably the flashiest example of that, but there are tons of others including John Mulaney and Norm Macdonald. Other cast members have written books or created their own niche TV shows or become in demand voice actors. There’s no single right path.

Over twelve seasons, the show has produced more than 1500 episodes, and the host recently re-upped his contract to keep appearing through 2028 in that same timeslot, which he's humorously made light of over the years. Not bad for someone who struggled to even land small supporting roles during his time on SNL.

While the 2024 TV schedule doesn't technically mark the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live’s 1975 debut, it is considered the beginning of Season 50 for the landmark NBC series. Between Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night biopic and the progressing lineup of upcoming SNL hosts and musical guests, there are a lot of glimpses back to the past as we celebrate the future, and more than one of them includes holes in the walls.

After reading a story involving former cast member Seth Meyers putting a hole in a dressing room wall during his time on the show, I recalled another tale of property damage at 30 Rock that I'd just learned about. Strangely enough, Mr. Meyers' story oddly mirrors another account from the Saturday Night past, one involving classic cast members John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd.

That Time Seth Meyers Punched A Hole In The Wall At SNL, And Why A Producer Made Him Keep It

Ask anyone from SNL’s cast, and they’ll tell you that it can be a place where tempers run high. That much has been true since the inception of producer Lorne Michaels’ counterculture comedy cavalcade, and Meyers’ recent interview with The New York Times can vouch for that point.

Apparently, the Late Night with Seth Meyers host had an incident where he did indeed put a hole in a wall in a dressing room. The impassioned reaction was due to one of his sketches being pulled, in favor of another piece of material on that night’s show. Cue Meyers flinging open that dressing room door, and making a hole that producer Michael Shoemaker insisted stay intact once it had been made.

Now the funny thing about this story is two different reasons were given for this hole’s continued presence. While they don't deviate enough to cancel each other out, the difference is a subtle one to behold. We'll start with Seth Meyers' version of the aftermath, which saw the current NBC late night host share Shoemaker’s reasoning as follows:

That’s a perfectly valid reason to live by, especially in an environment as competitive as SNL. Jockeying for air time, whether it’s with material you’re performing or writing, is something that cast members have always had to do. And that version of the Late Night with Seth Meyers producer’s wisdom certainly plays.

Although it may not be the entire truth. You see, this report also included Michael Shoemaker’s account of the sage wisdom. While his version isn’t terribly different, here’s the lesson Shoemaker said he was trying to teach:

No matter which version of the story you prefer, two things are abundantly clear: the first being that Michael Shoemaker’s intended lesson for Seth Meyers is one we could all benefit to learn from. Also, thanks to that reminder, the hole that Meyers put into 30 Rockefeller Center’s property remained for seven of his 13 years on Saturday Night Live.

Part of me wonders if Shoemaker, who had been working on SNL since 1986, took this lesson from another corner of hallowed history. This leads us to a story involving a location known only as “The Cave.” Its inhabitants: the “Bully Boys” of Saturday Night Live, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd.

How Seth Meyers’ Story Mirrors A Detail About John Belushi And Dan Aykroyd’s SNL Run

For as many key Saturday Night moments that Jason Reitman’s current critical darling portrays, there’s a piece of the NBC mainstay’s history that’s probably best fit for print. In a story shared in the 1985 book Saturday Night by Doug Hill and Jeff Weingrad, it was revealed that the future Blues Brothers masterminds shared an office that lived up to the imposing name it was given.

Besides the presence of dirty clothes and other research materials of varying sources, Belushi & Aykroyd’s office had some choice openings in its own walls. However, their reasons for keeping them were unclear, and as you’ll read below, probably of a different variety:

Dan Aykroyd’s fond remembrances of John Belushi paint the picture of chosen brothers who were on a similar wavelength. Both men knew how to stand up to forces of observed opposition, with Aykroyd being the more strong and silent type. Meanwhile, Belushi’s “wild man” pedigree preceded him, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he put a fair amount of holes in the wall to remind himself of the times when he felt out of sorts with the SNL company line.

If the walls of the 17th floor in the NBC Studios could talk, they’d probably be constantly screaming. Part of the time, that cacophony would probably come from the laughter created by the greatest Saturday Night Live sketches for A-list hosts, as well as those written for the cast. But every now and then, the more serious lessons that Seth Meyers, Dan Aykroyd, and John Belushi learned during their time in the comedy trenches are probably the signal that resonates the clearest.

Like all great art, the balance between comedy and tragedy makes all the difference in whether you’re laughing or crying. Andy Samberg Takes Over Late Night With Seth Meyers To Parody An Olympic Moment

Andy Samberg visited his fellow Saturday Night Live alum and real-life friend while promoting one of the latest 2024 movies, Lee. In the middle of the interview segment, Samberg shared he wanted to “hijack” the whole show by working through a Weekend Update idea he had inspired by the 2024 Olympics. Check it out:

As many of the TikTok commentators spoke to, this was giving major Jake Peralta energy from Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and I’m howling with laughter. Samberg basically did a jump scare Weekend Update segment by running out of the interview before coming back in as a stereotypical Frenchman to make all the dick jokes about the viral pole vaulting video that had Anthony Ammarati missing out on the gold because he hit the crossbar with his crotch. Or, as Samberg’s parody put it, with his “gift”, leading him to tumble to the ground.

The Samberg and Meyers’ bit is extra funny because of how ridiculous Samberg's accent is and how excited he is to shoot off a ton of dick jokes one after the other to relive the glory days with Meyers for a moment. We sure do miss these two on Weekend Update!

How The Internet Reacted To Anthony Ammirati's Funny Pole Vaulting Snafu

Just to backtrack a bit, the Anthony Ammarati viral moment happened on August 3, leading him to miss a place in the final for the Olympic sport. If you missed out on the moment when it was happening live, here’s one reaction from Twitter at the time:

At the time of the incident, the 21-year-old pole vaulter called it a “big disappointment,” but as one pole vaulting coach told Today, the viral moment is a “very common occurrence” in the sport. Even so, it’s kind of too good not to make some light of.

Oh, it’s too funny. Hopefully Anthony Ammarati can laugh about the whole thing. It’s surely not the worst thing in the world to go viral for having a sizable bulge. The sketch is a reminder of Andy Samberg being one of the iconic guests on Weekend Update many times in the past during his time on the show from 2005 to 2012. While he’s spoken about the toll SNL took on him over the years, he clearly missed doing a bit of parody with his pal, Seth Meyers.

Seth Meyers has been a regular figure on NBC for more than a decade, starting with Saturday Night Live before he began hosting Late Night with Seth Meyers. While his hosting gig means that fans can find him cracking jokes and interviewing celebs with new episodes four nights a week, that generally means staying up past midnight to tune in. Well, he got a live hour of primetime this week, and took the chance to poke fun at how late his usual time slot is. And honestly, it made me wish that he appeared in primetime more often in the 2024 TV schedule.

In the wake of the first and possibly only debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump in the race for President of the United States, Meyers hosted "Closer Look Primetime," a live and extended version of the popular (and usually pre-taped) "A Closer Look" segment that airs on Late Night. While most of the jokes were about the debate that aired the previous night, the host took the chance to gently jab at his own time slot on weeknights. Meyers joked:

The earliest late night slot on NBC is occupied on weeknights by Jimmy Fallon with The Tonight Show airing at 11:35 p.m. ET, although the network is making a cut to Fallon's show. Seth Meyers' Late Night airs last, so it truly is out of the ordinary to see him live on NBC in one of the primetime hours between 8 p.m. - 11 p.m. ET. As a fan of Meyers' usual "A Closer Look" and his interview style, I'm always happy to see the host airing a little earlier in the night, pajamas or not.

It's also not particularly surprising to see that he can still thrive performing live on television after more than a decade on Saturday Night Live, on which he served as head writer for several years. In some ways, "A Closer Look" can even be seen as a spiritual successor to SNL's "Weekend Update," now hosted by Michael Che and Colin Jost. Seth Meyers went on to comment on his early days as host of Late Night, complete with a photo of him from days gone by:

The mention of Kevin Hart is a reference to Meyers' popular "Day Drinking" segment, in which he – as you probably can guess – goes day drinking with a celebrity guest, the most recent of which was Hart. The "Day Drinking" videos generally rack up more than a million views each when posted on YouTube for fans who aren't actually staying up until 12:30 a.m. ET on weeknights.

The most popular consistent segment on Late Night is "A Closer Look," however, which digs into current events and airs three times a week as part of Seth Meyers' show. The success of the segment is undoubtedly what led to his primetime slot for "Closer Look Primetime." Scrolling through the YouTube page for Late Night, "A Closer Look" videos often reach audiences of more than 2 million viewers. Is it any wonder that NBC would bump him earlier for this one-off live special in the wake of a presidential debate?

Considering that Late Night recently had to lose staff members due to budget cuts, I'm not going to get my hopes up for primetime specials en masse from the team behind the show that usually airs past midnight. Still, the live extended version of "A Closer Look" was a fun way to fill the 10 p.m. hour, and hopefully another special is on the way before the end of the 2024 election cycle. Meyers renewed his deal with NBCUniversal through 2028 earlier this year, and established over the summer that he has no intention of replacing Lorne Michaels at SNL.

While we wait for SNL to return to the 2024 TV schedule, Kenan Thompson has been everywhere lately thanks to Olympics coverage. While my favorite moment so far has probably involved him roasting co-star Colin Jost, he also popped up on Late Night with Seth Meyers recently to talk about his recent gigs. Clearly the late night host doesn’t have the millennial fondness for the actor that I have, because he thought Mr. Thompson’s skating skills were a bit quacky at first.

Meyers recalled recently that he and the Saturday Night Live cast would go do that iconic thing where they would ice skate at Rockefeller Center every year around the holidays. Thompson is an A+ skater, and Meyers said he never, ever saw it coming.

Turns out, that’s because he didn’t grow up watching Thompson in The Mighty Ducks’ excellent follow-up Mighty Ducks 2. I’m not sure how Seth Meyers could have missed such an icon of Disney live-action excellence, but here’s Seth’s side of the story:

Kenan Thompson admitted that Mighty Ducks 2 was actually his very first film, and that it didn’t just require him to fake his way through “Knucklepuck Time.” In fact the cast, which also included Joshua Jackson, Marguerite Moreau, Elden Henson and Vincent LaRusso, all learned to skate during the making of the popular trilogy of movies. Years later, he has used these skills to show up his comedy pals at 30 Rock. He doesn’t really blame Seth though, noting that most people have forgotten his humble acting origin story.

It’s not just Thompson who learned how to skate for the film, either. Years later, a lot of people involved in the films would say Garrette Henson, who played Guy Germaine, ended up being a great skater in real life, and that his brother Elden Henson, Joshua Jackson and Matt Doherty got pretty good at hockey, as well. In the ‘90s, some of the Mighty Ducks cast members actually lied and said they could ice skate when the first movie was coming together while others on set could apparently skate but had never acted before. Producer Jordan Kerner told Time they set up “boot camp” for both.

If ducks were going to fly together, they were going to have to learn to skate together, and that’s exactly what they did for the OG Disney movie and its subsequent sequels. The movies are so fondly remembered by millennials that a series for those with a Disney+ subscription came together early in the streamer’s run (but has sadly since been canceled, despite being chock full of Mighty Ducks references).Still, while Game Changers didn't last, I will say there’s an entire generation of adult humans who are just a little younger than Seth Meyers, 50, who absolutely would have known immediately why Kenan Thompson is so smooth on the ice.

Also, just to let you know The Mighty Ducks turned 30 this year. You know, just in case you needed a reminder you were getting old.

Throughout his career, Seth Meyers has spent a lot of time behind a desk interviewing everyone from A-listers on Late Night With Seth Meyers to silly Weekend Update guests on Saturday Night Live. While he’s a stellar late-night host and interviewer generally, his segment Day Drinking is special because it really gets celebrities laughing. Now, he’s revealed his favorite Day Drinking moment, and it involves a bit he did with Kristen Stewart where he thought he “fucking blew it.”

Meyers spoke about Day Drinking at length with IndieWire, and he made sure to note that Kristen Stewart was one of his “favorite” guests on the segment. He went on to recall his top moment with the actress, and while he was a bit worried at the time, in hindsight, it was hilarious, as he explained:

For some context, about halfway through the Day Drinking episode, Mayers asked Stweart to read “the dumbest lines of dialogue” they had written for her. She then went on to recite a series of goofy lines with no prior knowledge of what they’d be, and it’s hilarious. The SNL vet gave her joking notes, and as it went on, the actress kept going take after take, and even snapped at Seth when he cut her off.

Meyers continued to explain how they ended up getting Stewart on the silly segment in the first place. He said he had interviewed her once before and “dug her vibe,” then he noted that he clocked her comedic skills while working with her on Saturday Night Live. So, they reached out, and she was down, to the host’s surprise, as he said:

Kristen Stewart sure did turn out to be a great time on Day Drinking, and people loved it, as the video quickly went viral online.

While we can’t condone day drinking, there’s no denying how funny this late-night bit is. From Kelly Clarkson to Rihanna to Julia Louis-Dreyfus to Kristen Stewart, Seth Meyers and his team have taken many A-listers out for a day at the bar, and it’s always hilarious in the most unexpected ways. However, there’s no denying that the K-Stew episode was a real highlight.
