Silent Hill: Book of Memories is set to hit U.S. Vitas on Oct. 16, which means it’ll be just in time for gamers to go trick-or-treating in a brand new (albeit a spin-off) adventure through the foggy streets of the scariest town on the planet. In case the dungeon-crawling gameplay in a survival-horror setting doesn’t have you convinced yet, then you’ll be happy to know that Konami has announced a demo will hit PSN during the next regular weekly update.

Book of Memories is an odd creature. As stated, it’s more of a dungeon crawling title set within the world of Silent Hill rather than a third-person action horror title like the rest of the games in the series. This dramatic shift has caused quite a bit of negativity to be thrown at the game from the get-go which, in my humble opinion, is unjustified.

First of all, Wayforward is handling Book of Memories, a studio well versed in reimagining existing franchises and doing a bang-up job of it along the way with such titles as Bloodrayne: Betrayal and the recent Double Dragon Neon.

Secondly, the vast majority of naysayers seem to be spewing their vitriol under the guise of being “die-hard Silent Hill fans.” A spinoff is a spinoff. Nobody set out to make this a “true Silent Hill experience.” It’s simply a new type of game wrapped in the world of the storied franchise. True fans would be willing to give it a shot before immediately writing the game off.

And you’ll be able to do exactly that come Oct. 2, as that’s when the Vita demo will be made available on the U.S. PSN. All I’m saying is, at least give it a chance to entertain you. Don’t go in expecting survival horror as you’ve come to know it and you might just walk away feeling like change can be a good thing.

It re-confirms the fall release window for the game, suggesting that it won't suffer another delay.

Book was supposed to arrive this March. However, Konami decided not to release it due to "timing and development" concerns. They said at the time that they were targeting an October launch. The trailer today simply says "Fall 2012."

The Vita-exclusive game takes the series into the action genre. Up to four players team up to battle monsters. In a break with series tradition, players can create their own custom character

The co-op and isometric perspective also make the game look like Diablo. However, Book has some puzzle segments as well. Maybe that'll be enough to give the experience a Silent Hill flavor.

Silent Hill: Book of Memories missed its launch date earlier this year and its status has been unknown since then. Today Konami cleared up the confusion by saying that they're now targeting an October launch for the Vita game.

Konami didn't provide a specific release date to Game Informer. However, they did explain why the game wasn't released in March. It seems that "timing and development" were to blame. In other words, they're probably polishing the game up to a shine.

Memories will mark the series' debut on the Vita. It's more action than survival horror. A team of four players will battle enemies using a combination of magic and weaponry. Other changes include an isometric camera and a new storyline. The story, in case you're wondering, isn't considered canon.

The game's deviations from series tradition might cause long-time Hill players to reject it. Silent Hill has always been a big series for PlayStation, though, so Memories will at least get a glance from survival horror fans. It may snare some action fans looking for a bit of co-op, too.

Not sure why they decided on an October release. October is during the holiday season and it's in close proximity to Halloween so it's not a terrible choice of a release window. However, Resident Evil 6 will be arriving in the same month so this might not turn out well for Memories. RE6 will probably distract a lot of the gamers that Konami is hoping to attract with their Vita game.

PS Vita owners will have to wait a couple more months to get their hands on Silent Hill: Book of Memories. Publisher Konami confirmed this weekend that the game won't make its schedule March 27th release date.

"Unfortunately Book of Memories has been delayed. Stay tuned for a more formal announcement," a Konami spokesperson told Ripten.

Book of Memories focuses on multiplayer action rather than survival horror. Four players, armed with both weapons and magical powers, team up to fend off enemies. Each player can create their own custom character, as well. WayForward Technologies, the folks responsible for last year's BloodRayne: Betrayal, are handling the development.

Konami initially planned to release Book in February, around the time that the PS Vita launched in the West. It was delayed to March so that it would line up more closely with Silent Hill: Downpour's release. Presumably they thought that the publicity from each game would help the other.

Amazon and GameFly now list the Book's release date as May 31st yet. It's not clear whether that's the actual release date or a placeholder, though. We'll have to see what Konami says in their official announcement on the matter.
