When you look at the Stargate franchise’s list of achievements, it’s pretty long and includes a hit movie, multiple TV series and an online hub dedicated to all things Stargate content. However, that latter in particular didn’t catch on and MGM announced this week that Stargate Command will be shutting down for good.

When Will Stargate Command Be Closing?

In its announcement, the support page mentions that Stargate Command is not “shutting down exactly,” but starting at 12:00 p.m. PT on December 31, the service will be discontinued and user accounts “will be closed.” Right now, the team seems to be working on transitioning to putting stuff on YouTube, where products will be available to a wider audience.

If you’ve already paid for Stargate Command, reimbursements are expected to be available in January.

When Stargate Command was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con a couple of years ago, it came with the news the place would be a hub for fans of Stargate SG-1 and the franchise as a whole. It was also the home of Stargate Origins, a web series spinoff that followed Catherine Langford, a recurring character within the universe.

The project aired for one season in 2018 and then quietly went away. It was MGM’s first attempt and a revival or spinoff since Stargate Universe went off of the air on Syfy in 2011. The status of the franchise has been pretty disappointing as of late. A planned series of movies didn't get off the ground. The web series never got a second season. No new shows have happened either.

The loss of Stargate Command means there won’t be a hub for Stargate fans anymore, but according to MGM’s announcement, the people who do care about Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe and the Stargate movie and Origins web series apparently prefer to “engage” in platforms they are already on like YouTube and Facebook.

My read? I’m not sure enough people were subscribing and I wouldn’t be surprised to see ads on the aforementioned shows when they move to YouTube, but we’ll have to wait and see.

What Does This Mean?

Well, a few things will be changing. Here’s what you really need to know:

I was never sure Stargate Command would work, but I do appreciate the idea of keeping the franchise alive for the fanbase. I only hope down the line that potentially this will mean new television content rather than simply a hub to talk about the shows.

Stargate SG-1’s Richard Dean Anderson and Amanda Tapping have been doing some fan events lately, and have mentioned interest from MGM, so more Stargate is not outside the realm of possibility. There really just needs to be a good idea, and someone to champion it.

When the prequel series Stargate: Origins was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2017, it didn't take long for the enthusiastic Stargate fanbase to start praying for a glimpse of the show. Well, the series just dropped a brand new trailer in anticipation of its arrival on the Stargate Command streaming service in a few days, and, as can be expected, it's filled with some crazy action. Take a look!

The new trailer for Stargate: Origins gives us a pretty good look at how the action will get underway in the new show. Set in 1939, the adventure will follow Catherine Langford (Ellie Gall) and her father, Professor Paul Langford (Connor Trinneer), 10 years after they discovered a Stargate in Egypt. World War II is, obviously, about to break out in Europe, and, unfortunately, the Langford's are running out of money to study the gate and figure out what it actually does. As if things couldn't get worse for them, their research has attracted Nazi attention in the form of occultist Dr. Wilhelm Brücke (Aylam Orian), who has nefarious plans of his own with regards to their work.

Catherine will then be tasked with seeking help from two young soldiers, Captain James Beal (Philip Alexander) and Wasif (Shvan Aladdin), as she tries to not only rescue her father, but save the world from previously unimaginable forces of evil. And, with that shot of the Stargate opening, it definitely looks like saving the world will entail a lot of adventuring through the gate to wild, unknown worlds. I mean, really, what's the point of a new Stargate show if not to give fans exactly that?

Stargate: Origins will, undoubtedly, take viewers to some crazy places, and the overall look of the show is very cinematic and so reminiscent of films like Raiders of the Lost Ark that it's hard not to get goosebumps watching the trailer. With all previous versions of the Stargate mythos taking place in the modern day, those behind Stargate: Origins were smart to take things back to the beginning, which will not only allow them to tell completely new stories (and possibly lead into those we know from the other Stargate shows) but make sure the series has a very different feel from its predecessors.

Ever since 1994, the Stargate franchise has managed to keep die-hard science-fiction nerds enamored with its sometimes bizarre tales. With the upcoming release of Stargate Origins, we are finally getting a chance to see where the whole story started, at least for Catherine Langford. The first official trailer for the upcoming Stargate: Command web series has finally dropped online, and Stargate: Origins looks like a hell of a good time for fans of both this franchise and hard sci-fi with an epic scope. Canonically speaking, Stargate Origins (as the title would suggest) is meant to be the first story in the overarching Stargate story. Taking place before both the other TV entry or the original movie, Origins will focus on Catherine Langford and the fallout of her father's discovery of the Stargate in Egypt by her father, Professor Langford, ten years earlier. Because of its prequel distinction, this new series can reasonably be expected to show fans things that will help to recontextualize how we look at the other elements of the Stargate franchise as a whole.

And of course, because this is a science-fiction period piece, the upcoming series will also feature battles against Nazis. That's pretty much a given for a story such as this, and it looks like it's going to make for a swashbuckling, Raiders of the Lost Ark-esque good time.

Structurally, Stargate Origins will deliver its content to audiences in small, digestible bites. Each of the ten episodes in the series will run roughly ten minutes in length, and as such, the entire run of the series will add up to the length of a feature movie, give or take. This is obviously a different approach when compared to other popular TV franchises that typically run extended episodes for longer stretches, but the level of restraint shown here in the process of delivering a proper story is arguably something to be commended. And let's not forget that this isn't heading to a major network, and the Stargate: Command service was started up with its success in mind.

The creative turnaround on Stargate Origins is also worth pointing out. The show was only recently announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 (in honor of the 20th anniversary of Stargate SG-1), and hitting a February release date so soon after its announcement is an impressive feat, no doubt helped by the short episode lengths.

It's been more than twenty years since Stargate first burst onto the scene with a self-titled movie. Through additional films, more than 300 television episodes, dvd releases, video games, new projects, unfortunate setbacks and countless fan conventions and appearances, the fandom has grown, at least among a very vocal base. Now, those diehards are being rewarded with a brand new television series.

The exciting news broke earlier today at Comic-Con, and fortunately, the announcement was filled with plenty of details. The show will be called Stargate: Origins, and it will primarily follow Catherine Langford. She's the daughter of archeologist Paul Langford, who led the Egyptian dig in 1928 that uncovered the first Stargate near the Great Pyramids in Giza. It'll run for 10 episodes, and it'll air exclusively on a new digital online fan platform called Stargate Command.

The panel also included a short trailer teaser, and you're not going to believe this, but it went over very well with fans, who have wanted a new show desperately since Stargate: Universe was cancelled in 2011.

The current offering will be produced by MGM, and it will come with the Stargate Command site that will allow enthusiasts to come together. More details will no doubt pour out in the coming days.
