One of the biggest complaints about Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U was that it wasn't like Super Smash Bros. Melee for the GameCube. Well, some gamers felt that the only way to truly fix the problem was to overhaul the Wii U version so that it plays like the GameCube version.

The YouTube channel 4XM uploaded a near two-minute video showcasing what's being called the Melee HD Mod. This mod basically adds a number of new features to the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros., including the popular wavedashing, the L-canceling, crouch canceling, and the same hard physics as Super Smash Bros. Melee.

The video starts by confirming that a lot of fans have requested for the Wii U game to play more like the GameCube version. The initial complaints were that the Wii U game was too slow and that it had been designed with a more casual focus as opposed to the hardcore, arcade-style gameplay present in the 2001 outing.

The trailer covers things like platform canceling, which is one of those difficult to pull off maneuvers that we oftentimes see during tournament play in events like EVO. The trailer also reveals that there are all new moves and animations for some of the characters as well.

We see that all the characters have been buffed up to move faster, react quicker and pull off moves easier. Additionally, all of the characters that carried over from Super Smash Bros. Melee have had their old movesets restored, so they play exactly as they did when the original Melee came out.

However, it's not all about the past. A good portion of Smash 4 Melee HD is also about giving the new characters something new to utilize during a bout, including all new tech combos and skills. The video showcases how new roster additions like Mega Man can use some cheap throw techniques that were present in the GameCube version, but was removed from the Wii U version.

The trailer looks pretty impressive, with the combat flowing across the screen in much faster motion than the original Wii U release.

I imagine this is the sort of mod that tournament organizers will love to use on the FGC scene, but there's one big hurdle to overcome: Nintendo.

Don't expect to see this mod make it very far in the public domain. In fact, a lot of gamers were angry that this Super Smash Bros., was even showcased to the public before going fully live. Why? Because they're well aware of how protective Nintendo is of their properties and how the mod will likely end up getting shut down soon. Hopefully, the full 1.0 release can make it out into the public domain before Nintendo sends out the cease and desist letters.

EVO has finally announced its lineup of games to be featured at the 2017 tournament, and it looks like participants will have a smashing good time street fighting with their guilty gear. Sorry, but I couldn't figure out a clever way to fit a BlazBlue reference into that teaser.

EVO 2017 is just a few months off, with organizers announcing the eight games that will fill out the main roster of this annual fighter event. There are some obvious pulls here, as well as a couple nice surprises. Here's the main rundown:

Street Fighter V

Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Injustice 2

BlazBlue: Central Fiction

Tekken 7

The King of Fighters XIV

We're definitely fans of the mix of games here, though we would probably prefer to see one of those Smash Bros. games traded out for something else. Other than that, we've got expected staples like representatives from Street Fighter and The King of Fighters, as well as a nice showing from a pair of games from the team at Arc System Works and newcomers like Injustice 2 and the latest Tekken.

But that doesn't actually round out the roster just yet. A ninth and final game will be added to EVO 2017 but, according to a report from Gameinformer, it will be based on community vote. The voting process is actually pretty cool, but we'll get to those details after the list of nine contenders.

Mortal Kombat XL

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

Skullgirls

Pokken Tournament

Killer Instinct

Super Street Fighter II Turbo

ARMS

Windjammers

Nidhogg

To vote for your favorite game, though, you're going to need to make a small donation. Simply head on over to the voting website and throw a few bucks toward your game of choice. The game that gets the most love will be made a part of the EVO lineup, with 100 percent of proceeds raised going to benefit Make-A-Wish International. Not a bad way to get the community involved and raise funds for a worthy cause at the same time. Marvel vs. Capcom is out front at the moment with more than $10,000 to its name, but Pokken Tournament is in a very close second. We're actually a little surprised that ARMS isn't winning, as the game is a brand new Switch title. Then again, since nobody has really played it yet, maybe folks want to include something they're already good at in the lineup.

Now all we have left to do is wait for EVO 2017, which will be hosted out of Las Vegas from July 14-16. Feel free to give us your thoughts on the lineup in the comments below.

One of the big surprise entries at EVO last year was Super Smash Bros. Melee, the more-than-a-decade old fighting game for the Nintendo Gamecube. Nintendo nearly put an end to the presence of Melee at EVO in a very dynamic standoff that eventually resulted in gamers winning out.

Not only did Super Smash Bros. Melee make a presence at EVO 2013 but the game managed to smash records in the process. The game received a standing ovation for the finals as the organizers thanked Nintendo for allowing them to host the game at the event, which is the opposite response that Microsoft received for the Xbox One when Killer Instinct made its EVO debut.

Thankfully, lightning is striking twice, as it's been confirmed by Shoryuken that at EVO 2014, Sauper Smash Bros. Melee will make a return during the tournament.

As noted on the site...

“This marks the second consecutive year for the game at the tournament. In 2013, Mango beat out Wobbles and 700 other competitors in the largest Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament in history.”

Some of you may be questioning why on Earth Super Smash Bros. Brawl from the Wii wasn't featured in the tournament, and it's because the game is labeled by the Fighting Game Community as unbalanced and poorly designed for the tournament scene. Things like character specials, cancels, combos and frame counting worked a lot better and is more stable in Super Smash Bros. Melee in comparison to Super Smash Bros. Brawl, according to the die-hard tournament players.

In fact, Smash Bros. Melee also receives a lot more love than Brawl in many local regional events, such as the Apex Tournament, which also hosted Nintendo's side-scrolling fighter during tournaments just this year.

Now, this is not to say that Brawl is hated to the point of being forsaken – quite the opposite. Brawl has undergone a massive transformation known as Super Smash Bros Brawl Project M. This new Project M is now the cornerstone of technically achieved gameplay excellence in the Smash Bros tournament scene. All the characters have been modified and supped up to fulfill their true potential.

Nevertheless, Super Smash Bros. Melee will be one of the prime time games at this year's EVO. Now I'm sure some of you are thinking "WTF, why is a Nintendo fighting game still at EVO?" But it's not like that. If you don't think that Nintendo's age-old 3D side-scrolling fighter can be intense, just check out the final's match between Wobbles and Mango in the video below. It's legit.

Even if you're not into fighting games at all you can easily catch up by checking out the top five moments out of this year's EVO that didn't include the Xbox One getting booed out.

The video comes courtesy of pro-player Maximilian, with his long flowing locks and hipster face forest. It's 15 minutes of pure unadulterated video game goodness. The skills on display are impeccable and the competitors are in it to win it, playing through several grueling days of non-stop foes to make it to the top eight grand finales.

The top moments are all pretty good and I can't really argue with them, there were a few things that did sort of irk me. I wish a bit more context had been given to the Balrog segment, especially considering that originally P.Balrog was getting smoked when we was playing as other characters, but then eventually started cleaning house as the boxer, which is what made that fight with Infiltration unbelievably intense. Also, I kind of wish Mango had been given a bit more time and a proper narrative context, so viewers would understand why it was so thrilling and important for him to win.

Without delving into a lengthy recap, I'll simply say that Mango had an uphill climb to the finale and it wasn't originally looking so great, especially given the dominant and thorough performance put on display by Wobblez. It was basically the typical movie-marathon showdown between the fan-favorite underdog and the indomitable champ. Mango managed to defeat some vicious opponents in a matter of close-calls with too much hype to put into words.

Heading into the finales, Mango put on an absolute show of force and a technical display of Smash Bros. prowess that was previously rivaled by no one. It was a clinic for the ages. His massive comeback against Wobblez had everyone on the edge of their seats and at the end of the bout the crowd broke out into a chant for Nintendo because without them giving their blessings more than $90,000 wouldn't have been raised for breast cancer awareness and more than 130,000 people wouldn't have tuned in to see one of the greatest displays of competitive fighting game technique in Smash Bros. Melee. Maybe now the win will make a little more sense when viewing it in context with the video.

I have nothing much to say about King of Fighters XIII in the video... the entire top eight was a tour de force and, in my opinion, it is the epitome of fighting game excellence. SNK knows their craft and just about every one of those bouts were my favorite. I simply cannot describe in words how technically achieved those guys were and I have to tip my hat off to them for putting on bouts worthy of their own pay-per-view.

Now, the real big kicker was the Justin Wong saga. Oh. My. Gosh. Justin Wong.

Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 wasn't so much about the display of skill and technique so much as it was the drama surrounding one of the biggest potential comeback upsets in the history of eSports.

So get this, Justin Wong was six games down but this boy brought the heat to the grill, a juicy steak, some pepper and plenty of salt.

From the losers bracket to the the grand finals, Justin Wong picked up so much hype for his performance and near-close-calls that I knew his matches would end up being the number one pick. Again, though, it's difficult to have his bouts framed within a few minutes because each fight told a unique and compelling story of a kid vying to win at all costs. I loved each of his matches and it kept viewers and the live-audience on the edge of their seats all the way to the final K.O. It was brilliant television... if it were on TV.

Anyway, Justin didn't win the championship title, but he came in a very close second place and did so in such an engaging fashion that many gamers, fans and eSports aficionados alike, probably can't wait to see how it all unfolds next year.

Now, if what you've seen at the top of the article and what you've read above has enticed you to consider getting serious about eSports or the FGC (Fighting Game Community), then don't hesitate to get real. Don't hesitate to start training now and maybe, just maybe you'll end up in a decent position just like former American idol winner, Taylor Hicks.

You might also get a bit of a boost using a real fightstick pad, and not the cheap $20 MadCatz kind either. I'm talking something legit, like Foehammer Customs legit. These are like the Harley Davidsons of fightsticks and Foehammer let loose a small sample pic of their latest custom pad, which you can check out below.

You can also learn more about custom fighting sticks over on the official Foehammer Customs website, or get more details about the FGC by visiting the official Shoryoken website.

I kind of wish I had managed to save the screen-caps of the concurrent viewers during the grand finals for Super Smash Bros. Melee during EVO 2013, because the numbers were absolutely righteous. How righteous? We're talking well over 130,000 people tuning in to see Fox McCloud beat the royal crap out of the Ice Climbers.

As noted on the eSports Update website, the game was blasting through the numerical barriers and setting up some hyper hype for a game that's more than 12 years old. Decade or not, this dedicated fighter had some undeniable numbers on-hand for the live-stream as the Fighting Game Community came out in spades to see some of the most intense fights ever in an interactive video game.

SSBM, however, was not the most watched event of the day... as Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 came away the winner with more than 140,000 concurrent viewers streaming the game. However, neither of these games could have reached the numbers they did without first having been setup by SNK Playmore's King of Fighters XIII. The sprite-based fighter had some of the most intense matches of the entire day and ended up getting a ton of people tuning in to see what all the fuss was about.

With the grand finals coming to an explosive finish for KOF XIII, those same viewers were then further exposed to Super Smash Bros. Melee where the tweets went off the charts as everyone watching the stream began hashtag-bombing Nintendo, thanking them for the support and not pulling Smash Bros from the line-up.

What's more is that this really did set a precedent, showing publishers that dedicated communities can keep a game a live long after the initial eight-week money pot when a game releases. The thing that really struck me hard was how well balanced and dynamic Smash Bros. Melee is in a competitive atmosphere. I've always played the SSB games casually so I had no idea you could do what they were doing during the tournament.

In fact, the match was so great, you'll probably want to check out Mango doing his thing in the video below, courtesy of IGN. It's a great watch, indeed.

By and far, EVO 2013 was unbelievably good and it definitely trumped everything from EVO 2012. While there weren't specific moments quite as thrilling as some of the ones from the top 10 EVO 2012 spots, the narrative of the fights and the way the fights unfolded over the course of entire matches made them that much more thrilling. It'll be hard to put together a top 10 list to properly convey all the moments from EVO 2013 while paying respect to the way those moments were reached.

Nevertheless, this is a great thing for gaming – having old and new titles keeping the competitive scene alive within the community – and I can't wait to see what we'll see at EVO 2014.

Also, huge props to the Big 'N' for doing the right thing in the end and not banning the stream of Super Smash Bros. Melee.
