Now, I had heard rumblings about a rom-com on the 2026 movie schedule that was like if you took the premise of The Purge movies, added in romance, and took away the murder. Initially, I was conflicted by this because of how wild it sounds. However, now I’ve seen the trailer for Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro’s One Night Only, and I gotta say, I’m totally sold.

So, I know what you might be thinking: “Why would you use a great horror franchise to describe a rom-com?” Trust me, I wondered that too. However, it actually makes so much sense, so let me break it down. Instead of one day where crime (including murder) is legal, in One Night Only, there’s only one day of the year where “single people are legally allowed to have sex.” See what I’m saying, it’s like The Purge, but instead of everyone doing crimes, every single person is trying to get laid.

With that foundation set, this movie follows Owen and Allie, who are played by Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro, respectively, on this day. They don’t know each other, they meet on this day, and it seems like they do not get along. The trailer shows the two bantering, making fun of each other, and throwing insults back and forth, like:

• Allie: Your ears look like car doors.
• Owen: Well, your nose is way too small for your face.
• Allie: Your chin could plow a field.
• Owen: Your legs don’t make any sense.
• Allie: Your hairline doesn’t make any sense.

So, at first, it seems like they won’t be fit to share this one night together.

However, as the trailer depicts, it seems like they get up to a lot of trouble over the course of the evening (why do they end up at a hospital?), and as this day winds down, maybe they realize they do have feelings for one another. But will they act on them with enough time to legally do so? I guess the film will answer that question, and I can’t wait to see it.

Along with the premise immediately pulling me into this movie, the stars got me too. I adored Callum Turner’s Eternity (a rom-com you can stream with an Apple TV subscription), and Monica Barbaro has been a favorite of mine since Top Gun: Maverick (check that one out with a Paramount+ subscription). So, I’m thrilled to see them both leading a movie. The fact that they’re leading a rom-com together AND they have palpable chemistry just makes all this even better.

On top of the actors and the premise being major selling points, One Night Only comes from Will Gluck, who directed both Easy A and Anyone But You. When I think about that iconic Emma Stone movie and the creative Shakespeare-inspired project starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney, the first thing that comes to mind is the creativity of both films. They each have unique premieres, but also play into tropes we know and love. It seems like One Night Only will do the exact same thing with its wild Purge-like premise.

You can catch The Purge, but make it a rom-com…I mean One Night Only, in theaters on August 7.

We live in an era where the film franchise rules all. But even before everything in theaters was part of a comic book universe, the horror franchise was seemingly as undying as its antagonist. It’s rare for any horror franchise to disappear for too long, and it looks like one of the modern hits of the genre, The Purge, may be ready for its comeback.

There were five Purge movies between 2013 and 2021, but since The Forever Purge took the concept of the “crime is fine for a limited time” concept and seemingly ended the “limited time” part, little has been heard from the series. However, it appears that the previously in-development Purge 6 may be much closer to a reality. Franchise producer Brad Fuller recently told Comicbook.com that he is working with Purge creator James DeMonaco, who is currently dealing with the script, and that he may also direct the next film with a familiar star attached. Fuller said…

The Purge movies are dumb, and I’ve always felt like they really didn’t take advantage of their premise as well as they could. That said, The Purge movies always have the potential of being entertaining, and the two films that included Frank Grillo are among the series’ best. So this apparent confirmation that he'll be back is great news.

The Purge movies have largely been a sort of anthology, with different films taking place during different Purge events and following different characters. However, Frank Grillo appeared in two consecutive films, subtitled Anarchy and Election Year, where he played one of the few “hero” characters the movies even have. The first film saw Grillo as a man who wanted to use The Purge as cover to kill a man responsible for the death of his son. It was basically his audition to play The Punisher.

It had previously been indicated that Grillo would be back in the next Purge movie. A couple of years ago, DeMonaco talked about the world the new Purge movie would be set in, where the United States has ceased to exist and the remaining people have broken up into cultural factions.

While Brad Fuller’s comments certainly don’t make it sound like there are plans to start shooting The Purge 6 in the short term, so don’t expect to see it join the 2026 movie schedule, it does at least sound like this is a project that’s in active development, and that the people involved are trying to make happen. Bring on The Purge.

Some of the best movies of all time all take place within the same 24 hours. Sometimes it's about the final day of school, like Dazed and Confused, or sometimes it's about one man's mental breakdown, like Falling Down. These movies have a diverse range of topics, tons, and genres, but they all have one thing in common: they all happen on the same day (or night).

Dazed & Confused

One of the best movies about high school life ever made is the classic Dazed and Confused. It takes place on the last day of school, 1976. It starts in the morning, with the juniors arriving for their last day, and follows them through the day at school, and the parties (and drivin' around and stuff) that happen once school is dismissed. Sure, it technically goes until dawn the next day when Mitch arrives home drunk, and a few of the characters head to Houston to get Aerosmith tickets, but it all fits in a 24-hour timeline.

Dr. Strangelove

Just how much can change in a day? Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove leaves you with 100s of questions, but few satisfying answers, except that humankind is a disaster. One of Kubrick's most approachable movies, it leaves us all wondering just what kind of people (all men in this case) are really holding humanity's fate in the palm of their hand (or the end of their finger).

Falling Down

1993's Falling Down is a movie that not only holds up more than 30 years later, but it feels like something that is even more likely to happen these days. Michael Douglas plays a man who has reached his breaking point with life and society, and he turns to violence and nihilism to get back at the world. It starts on his daily commute to work and ends hours later on a pier over the Pacific Ocean after his crime spree... without giving away the ending...

Escape From New York

When done right, adding a countdown as a plot device raises the stakes of a movie like few others can. Escape From New York definitely does it right. Snake (Kurt Russell) has 22 hours to locate and save the president in a post-apocalyptic New York City that has been turned into a prison. If he doesn't get it done in less than a day, he faces the ultimate consequences.

Do The Right Thing

Even in just one neighborhood in New York City, a lot can happen in a day. In Spike Lee's masterpiece Do the Right Thing, it happens on the hottest day of the year. Things start as a simmer, but soon become a pot boiling over in anger from almost everyone involved. It starts like such a normal day, too.

1917

Some people don't like the "one-shot" style of Sam Mendes' World War I epic 1917, but you can't deny just how frenetic it makes the one day that two soldiers face as they attempt to connect with another company by crossing enemy lines. It's an amazing story, and with some creative editing, the movie shows both day and night, despite happening (mostly) in real time.

Dog Day Afternoon

One of the most famous movies of the 1970s and one of the best of Al Pacino's career, Dog Day Afternoon, as the title implies, takes place (mostly) over one afternoon. The movie is based on a true story of a bank robbery and hostage situation that took 22 hours to come to a violent and tragic end.

The Longest Day

Well, it says it right there in the title. Not only does all of the action in The Longest Day happen in one day, but it all happens on one of the most famous dates in history, June 6th, 1944. D-Day. This blockbuster with a completely stacked cast that includes John Wayne, Richard Burton, Henry Fonda, Sean Connery, and many more, is one of the best war movies of all time.

Magnolia

One of Tom Cruise's best performances over his stellar career comes in 1999's Magnolia, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. Cruise is joined by an excellent ensemble cast playing characters whose lives intersect across one day in Los Angeles.

Friday

Friday is a classic example of a comedy that all takes place in one day. It starts when Craig (Ice Cube) wakes up, and ends when he goes to bed at the end of the day. In between, an incredible number of things happen. Smokey (Michael Tucker) spends most of the morning sitting on Craig's porch, introducing all the characters, and by evening, things get scary. It's one of the best movies of the '90s and an all-time cult classic.

The Breakfast Club

Anybody who had to spend a Saturday in detention knows what the crew in The Breakfast Club is dealing with. It's one of the best movies of the '80s, and one of the best teen movies of all time. Of all the John Hughes movies of the 1980s that Gen X loves, this one, which all takes place over about 8 hours, is possibly the most beloved.

Training Day

Director Antoine Fuqua broke big with his second film, 2001's Training Day, starring Denzel Washington as the most corrupt cop you could ever imagine, spending his day training a new recruit, played by Ethan Hawke, for his insane rogue police squad of narcotics officers. It's a crazy day for everyone, to say the least.

Die Hard

Without question, Die Hard is on the Mount Rushmore of '80s action flicks. It's certainly a very long day for John McClane (Bruce Willis). What was supposed to be a quick drop in on a Christmas party after a long cross-country flight from New York to L.A. turns into a long night when he has to take out a crew of thieves led by Hans Gruber, played by Alan Rickman in his first movie role.

The Menu

2022's The Menu is one of the best comedy horror movies in recent years. If you've never seen it, but you are a fan of shows like Netflix's Chef's Table, it's a must-watch. It all takes place throughout one incredible, crazy, and murderous meal in a pretentious restaurant on a remote island.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

It's an incredible day off for one of Gen X's film heroes, Ferris Bueller. Ferris (Matthew Broderick), along with his girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara) and his best friend Cameron (Alan Ruck), packs in a baseball game, a parade, a fancy lunch, and so much more in this amazing "sick" day in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Clue

Murder mysteries used to be a big deal for parties, and it's safe to assume that the cult classic Clue played a big part in the genre taking off. One of the most popular movies around the CinemaBlend office, Clue features some amazing performances from everyone in the cast, including and especially Madeline Kahn as Mrs. White and Tim Curry as the butler.

Con Air

Technically, not all of the action in Con Air takes place in one day, as there is a scene at the beginning explaining how Cameron Poe (Nicolas Cage) ended up in jail. But the rest of the movie is all set on Poe's last day of incarceration. It starts in the morning as Poe boards the flight full of dangerous convicts and ends when the plane crashes into the Las Vegas strip that night. It's hardly a normal flight.

High Noon

One of the greatest examples of a movie that takes place in real time is the classic western High Noon, starring Gary Cooper as Marshal Will Kane. It's one of the best Westerns of all time, and it all takes place over the course of its 85-minute runtime. Marshall Kane has a showdown with his nemesis, Frank Miller, played by Ian MacDonald, and in the process becomes one of the most famous film LEOs of all time.

Groundhog Day

If you want a movie on this list to argue about, here you go. Does Groundhog Day all take place in one day? It all happens on February 2nd... There are just an endless number of February 2nds. So it's both over hundreds of days and on the same day. It's quite the conundrum, am I right or am I right? Right. Right, Right.

Clerks

Poor Dante, he wasn't even supposed to be at the convenience store that day! Kevin Smith's breakout film, the low-budget but brilliant Clerks, all takes place on one day, pretty much all in one place (save for one field trip to a funeral). It's a day that includes romance, death, anger, and a glorious group of weirdos and outcasts.

Glengarry Glenn Ross

Anyone who has ever worked in sales gets something from Glengarry Glenn Ross. It's not always what writer David Mamet was trying to convey. As it started as play, the events in the movie are limited to one day and only a couple of location and as a result, it is completely riveting from start to finish, The excellent cast that includes Al Pacino, Ed Harris, Jack Lemon, Kevin Spacey, and Alex Baldwin brings a ton of energy to such limited confines.

The Warriors

From Coney Island to the Bronx and back is all that happens to the Warriors in the movie of the same name. Sure, it sounds like an annoying subway ride for anyone, but when the gang is blamed for the murder of Cyrus, things go sideways quickly, and it takes them the rest of the night to get home, bopping their way through every neighborhood along the way in this cult classic.

Adventures In Babysitting

If you grew up in the '80s with parents who went out a lot, you can relate to Adventures in Babysitting. If you were a babysitter in the '80s, this movie is your worst nightmare, rare for a comedy, right? This classic starring Elisabeth Shue as the titular babysitter shows just how bad things can get over the course of only one night.

12 Angry Men

12 Angry Men is often considered one of the best films of all time, and the whole thing takes place in real time. So much happens in just one room over the course of the movie's 96-minute runtime that it's almost astounding. The acting performances and the script keep the movie sizzling, despite the confined time and space.

American Graffiti

George Lucas' American Graffiti is to the 1950s what Dazed and Confused is to the 1970s. Rather than the last day of school, American Graffiti happens on the last day of summer. The movies are like the perfect bookends in that regard. Plus, both movies have a slew of awesome cars.

After Hours

One of Martin Scorsese's most underrated movies, After Hours follows an office worker played by Griffin Dunne trying to simply get home at the end of his work day, and things get wild, and the longer the night gets, the worse things get.

Judgement Night

1993's Judgement Night from director Stephen Hopkins is better remembered (with good reason) for its incredible soundtrack, mashing up hip hop and rock and roll. The movie takes place all in one night, which goes off the rails when the main characters take a wrong turn on the way to a boxing match.

Rope

Alfred Hitchcock's 1948 masterpiece Rope is a dark movie with some groundbreaking cinematography. In the long list of great Hitchcock movies, this one always ranks near the top. It portrays a murder and the attempt to cover it up and create "the perfect murder." The aftermath plays out during the evening after the murder.

Before Sunrise

Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise is one of the great romance movies of the 1990s, and it all takes place in one day, June 16, 1994, on a train, and one night in Vienna shared by the couple who meet on the train and spend one night together in the Austrian capital.

The Purge

If you've never seen The Purge, first, you should, it's so ridiculous that it's awesome and second, the plot can be summed up by one quote from the movie, which come in the form of a public service announcement that explains all crime, up to and including murder, is legal on day of the year for 12 hours.

Three O'Clock High

The underrated Three O'Clock High, starring Casey Siemaszko and Richard Tyson, is the '80s high school comedy equivalent of the great Western High Noon. The movie follows Jerry (Siemaszko) as he tries to avoid a scheduled fight at the end of the school day with the new bully, played by Tyson.

Phone Booth

Another movie on this list that takes place in real-time is the thriller Phone Booth, starring Colin Farrell as a man caught in the middle of a madman's crime. Pretty much the whole movie features Farrell's character in, you guessed it, a phone booth.

So if you’ve been in the horror community online, you would know that a new Purge movie was reported to be in the works earlier this month. While I don’t consider it one of the best horror movies ever, I think that the first Purge movie was alright in its execution, and you could have done a lot with it. I am a fan of the franchise, but I also think I’m finally starting to feel the fatigue.

While we aren’t anywhere close to The Purge 6 (which was revealed by Bloody Disgusting) being released on the 2025 movie schedule, it’s something I’m thinking about for next year. I can’t help but know that I’m going to be disappointed. Why? Well, let’s get into it.

The First Purge Movie Was Hands Down The Best One

I feel like this is the case with many horror movies most of the time, but let’s be honest – the first is always the best. There are rare moments where, years down the line, a sequel can do just as well. However, at a certain point, you start to wonder why they’re even still making movies if not for a quick cash-grab, like all those Friday the 13th movies.

But with The Purge, this one felt the most grounded and realistic, and I think that’s why I believe it’s the best. Like many of the other Purge movies, which we’ll discuss in a bit, this one often didn’t feel nearly as believable. The first entry, however, felt like how it might happen in real life if a purge were to exist, which made it even scarier and more unnerving.

Could it have been better? Of course. There was so much room for growth, and I think some of the twists and turns could have been better perfected – maybe the violence could have been upped just a tab. But it’s at least watchable and a fun movie to revisit on a Saturday night with your friends.

The Rest Have Been Either Subpar Or Just Downright Bad

That’s where it ends, though. The rest of these films aren’t that great, and I stand by that. I really think there are moments of brightness that shine through, but most of the time, it feels… just okay.

There’s a lot I could break down about it. The first thing I want to mention is the acting. Now, I don’t personally think The Purge is one of Ethan Hawke’s best films (like some other staff members do), but I do believe that his acting, as well as the people around him, were great in that film. They really pulled out all the stops and made a genuinely great horror movie. However, in subsequent Purge movies, it just felt like the acting grew increasingly campy as the gore intensified.

Then there’s the fact that the same person, James DeMonaco, directed the first three films. Then the next two were directed by two entirely different individuals – Gerard McMurray and Everardo Gout. While this doesn’t always happen, I have noticed that in some horror franchises (like the Resident Evil movies) that the overall distribution of the story tends to get muddled when directors change, even if the screenwriter stays the same (as it did for the Purge films). There’s just so much stuff that’s not connecting.

Ultimately, I believe the primary issue is the narrative. The story for these films doesn’t land that well.

The first film, again, had a lot going for it. The idea was relatively original in the world of horror, and it’s something that we hadn’t really seen before. Its execution could have been better, but I enjoyed it overall. However, as the franchise has continued, and more lore has been woven into the story's fabric, things have become more complex and more challenging to understand.

There’s also the underlying politics of it all, and I think that should have played a much larger role in the first film than The Purge: Election Year. But because it doesn’t really take a primary seat until later in the franchise, it almost feels forced, and that’s not fun.

The Purge movies haven’t gone up in quality. If anything, they’ve gone down, and I don’t exactly know where else they can go with this.

The TV Series Was Alright, But Just Boring

I bet some of you didn’t even realize there was a television series based on this series, but there was. The Purge show was featured on the USA Network and ran for two seasons, with ten episodes each from 2018 to 2019.

The series isn't super different from the films – the first season covers the Purge night of 2027. It's a little too close to that year for me to be comfortable, but okay. There are several disconnected stories of survivors and assailants, as well as everything else that we watch. It’s nice to see different stories instead of one, and then they do end up linking together towards the end, but it still feels like too little.

Numerous avenues could be explored in a TV series like this, and they decided to remake the first movie, but just with more stories. Some of them felt like they didn’t even make sense in this world.

The second season was a little more interesting, as it took place nearly a decade later and followed new characters as they survived the end of Purge Night, then investigated conspiracies for the following year. Still, all the people who we follow feel flat, and the stories themselves are just not interesting.

The Story Really Isn't Even That Original Anymore

This is the biggest issue with the Purge franchise as a whole: the story is no longer original. They keep trying to make this happen over and over again, but we’ve seen this song and dance before, and it usually ends the same way.

I think we’ve evolved as a society with horror movies since 2013 (the year the first Purge movie came out) to where we look for more in our horror movies. Films like Ari Aster’s Midsommar and Hereditary speak deep meanings while also scaring the heck out of you. Movies like Bring Her Back can be traumatizing for their audiences, yet also evoke tears.

People are looking for more substance in their horror, and just having someone have a free pass to murder whoever they want because the government said so isn’t cutting it anymore.

There Are So Many Other Great Ideas We Could Lean Into Instead Of The Same One Over And Over Again

I’m still going to see the new Purge movie. At this point, I’ve dedicated so much time to this franchise that it would be a sin for me not to see it. However, I also think that if this series is to thrive, it needs to start exploring more ideas.

It needs to dig deeper into the morality, mortality and everything else that revolves around the Purge for people to really sink their teeth into. We need to have more characters face conflicting decisions where there really isn’t a winning side, but they have to pick the one that doesn’t suck as much. We need more conflict, and right now, it’s just not there.

If these improvements aren't made, I fear that The Purge is going to get taken out just like every character that dares to walk into this franchise.

There are so many great upcoming horror movies, and while the next Purge film will undoubtedly be a part of it, I at least have plenty of new films to look forward to as well. Maybe Pete Davidson possibly joining the franchise will make me excited.

Pete Davidson seems to be moving himself comfortable within the horror genre, and I’m all here for it. The comedian rose to fame as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, and has since ventured into not-as-comedic roles, and is particularly drawn to the horror genre. After his small part in Bodies, Bodies, Bodies, Davidson will soon be seen starring in The Home, a new film from the creator of The Purge. franchise, James DeMonaco, who revealed he actually wants Davidson to join the horror franchise, and there's technically precedence for it.

In a recent interview on The Julia Cunningham Show, franchise writer/director James DeMonaco opened up about directing his new film, The Home, as well as the enduring popularity of his Purge franchise. The filmmaker helmed the first three Purge movies, and will be responsible for writing the upcoming sixth Purge film. Apparently, he’s even hoping to include his latest lead in the future project somehow, after the SNL alum expressed his own interest in the franchise over the years. DeMonaco revealed that Davidson's inclusion in The Home came from trying to get him in a Purge movie. He said:

Hopefully this mutual interest leads to Davidson joining the franchise in whatever capacity possible. The comedian seems to have an interest dying on the big screen, considering his demise met in The Suicide Squad, and early death in Bodies, Bodies, Bodies. If he does die in Purge 6 however, I’m hoping he lasts longer in the runtime. He’s a fascinating figure to watch on screen, infusing his sarcastic sense of humor into his characters. He’d be such a fun addition to the franchise, though I’d love to see his character play things out a little longer than just a quick pre-bludgeoning cameo.

For DeMonaco, The Home is yet another interesting insert in his filmography. The movie follows Max, played by Davidson, who while working at a retirement home realizes the residents may be concealing horrifying secrets. It’s an unconventional setting for a horror movie, with an unconventional star at the center. However, DeMonaco has always seemed to have an interest in exploring unorthodox concepts in horror movies, so this feels like a strong expansion for his filmography. While fans may be looking towards another Purge film, hopefully they find something just as interesting and sinister in The Home that gets them to the movie theater.

Whether he ends up joining the Purge franchise or just sticks to this one DeMonaco collaboration, I’m loving this new phase in Davidson’s career. Usually after starring on SNL, actors tend to go the straight comedy route, releasing hilarious films like Happy Gilmore, Anchorman, and Bridesmaids. While we absolutely adore these movies, I love when comedy stars try their hands at something different, and Davidson feels right at home in the horror genre. The Home has yet to be released, but he has already gotten creative with his choices, and I can’t wait to see what doors this opens for the actor, especially if this means joining The Purge franchise.

From comedies to sci-fi (especially sci-fi) Hollywood has been churning out movies set in the far distant future. A future, it turns out, that has come and gone here in our actual Earth timeline. Here's a list where we explore when those movies were made, what year they were set in, and how they look today. 

Back To The Future Part II

This might be the most notorious movie on this list. Back to the Future Part II was released in 1989 and when Marty, Doc, and Jennifer go to the future, it's all the way to 2015. Well, 2015 came and went a long time ago and we still don't have flying cars, hoverboards, or self-tying shoes. Jaws 19 still hasn't been released either. It didn't get everything wrong though, some of the tech in the McFly home, like voice-activated TV controls and video phones exist. We still have a lot of questions about this movie though. 

Freejack

1992's Freejack is a time capsule...into 1992. It's certainly not one into "the future" it presents. When Alex (Emilio Estevez) is transported into the future, he is taken to a crazy, dystopian New York City of 2009. There is really nothing worth talking about what they got correct here because very little of what it shows was reality in 2009. New York City was safer and cleaner than in 1991, not the other way around. 

Westworld

Not to be confused with the HBO show Westworld, 1973's Westworld, written and directed by Michael Crichton was released in 1973. It's set in 1983 (as revealed in the sequel, Futureworld), which, looking back, was a big mistake. Why not set it in 2083? There is very little about the tech in Westworld that existed in 1983, or 2023 for that matter. They did a decent job with the computers that run the park though, those are somewhat realistic for 1983.  

The Terminator Series

So, truth be told, the timeline in the Terminator series is a convoluted mess. So we're going to stick just to the first couple of movies in the series, the first released in 1984, and the second, Terminator 2: Judgement Day in 1991. Both set the day that the machines took over as August 29th, 1997. Luckily for all of us, this never happened. 

Johnny Mnemonic

It's easy to make fun of 1995's Johnny Mnemonic for being set in 2021 and missing the mark in a lot of ways. The present is clearly not nearly as diabolically dystopian as the movie promises, but there's a lot they got close to correct, or at least not way, way off. The way the internet is used, for example, is not, like, totally different. Sure, we don't have neural implants...yet, but nothing is in there that we would laugh at today, technology-wise. 

Blade Runner

Another of the most notorious on the list is the sci-fi classic Blade Runner. Released in 1982 and set in 2019, there is more that they got wrong than they got right. Of course, none of that matters, since it'll always be a stone-cold classic.

The Road

Author Cormac McCarthy's 2006 dystopian future novel The Road was made into a movie in 2009 starring Viggo Mortensen as a father making his way through a destroyed world with his son. Though it's never explicitly said when it takes place, it is "several years" after whatever unnamed event caused the destruction, which would set it somewhere around ten years in the future, or 2019. 

Escape from New York

The year is 1997. The island of Manhattan is a prison colony and the President has just crashed there. That's the premise of 1981's Escape from New York, but that's obviously not the fate of New York City. At least not year. It also doesn't make it less awesome of a movie. 

Timecop

1994's Timecop starring Jean-Claude Van Damme is pretty silly, so it feels a little silly to criticize it too harshly here, but come on. It's setting up a "future" in 2004 that includes the actual ability to travel through time. Obviously, that's not available to us, but again, it's not it'll ever be actually possible, so how mad can we be here? 

The Running Man

The Running Man, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, might be the least "Stephen King movie" of all of the movies based on books by the prolific author. Released in 1987, the cult classic is set in 2017. The actual world of 2017 looked nothing like the one in the movie, but, there are some things it did kind of get right. Reality TV, for example, is essentially what "The Running Man" TV show in the movie is. Plus, it also has voice-activated lights and TVs, which existed in 2017. So not terrible. 

Rollerball

1975's Rollerball, starring James Caan, is a wild movie that is totally a product of its time. It's become a cult classic for good reason. What it isn't, though, is accurate for the year it was set in, 2018. Roller derby isn't even popular anymore! Corporations don't govern the country either. At least not yet. 

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome

The whole Mad Max series takes place in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, like a lot of movies set in the future. The future? Sometime in the mid-2000s for Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. It's safe to say the movie was just a little off. 

Soylent Green

Soylent Green has one of the best twists in film history, but that doesn't make it accurate. Released in 1973 and set in 2022, the movie is wrong about a whole lot of things. We're certainly not eating people... or are we?

Akira

1988's Akira is one of the most beloved Anime movies of all time, but it sure missed the mark in predicting what 2019 will look like. Once again the makers of a dystopian future movie didn't nail it when it comes to a cataclysmic event. Maybe if a live-action remake comes along, it'll set too far in the future for us to call it out. 

Metropolis

Going back to the earliest days of film, Metropolis, the silent movie classic made in 1927, gets the future very wrong. Though the movie is set in 2027, we're confident in predicting that the world won't be a dystopian factory nightmare in three years. 

The Purge

2013's The Purge is a perfect example of why, if you're making a movie about a dystopian future, make sure it's far enough into the future that people won't be around to see how wrong you were. Set in 2022, The Purge shows a world where people are so angry that the only way to solve things is to allow them to kill each other on one day a year. Actually, maybe it's not as far off as it seems...

2001: A Space Odyssey

Talk about a movie that really telegraphs how wrong it's going to be, 2001: A Space Odyssey tells us what year it takes place right in the title. The 1968 release is set, well, in 2001, and we didn't even have Pan Am flights to space. We didn't have Pan Am at all, as a matter of fact. 

The Postman

1997's post-apocalyptic western The Postman is set in the "near future" of 2013. Of course, the world of 2013 had not experienced an apocalyptic event, nor was a new world capital set up in Minnesota. 

No Escape

In 1994, Ray Liotta starred in a kind of off-brand Escape From New York called No Escape. It's not the best movie, but it's fun. It also takes place in a world where corporations run the prisons in America in 2022. Which, frightfully, isn't that hard to imagine being possible. 

Highlander II: The Quickening

A lot of people would rather that Highlander II: The Quickening wasn't made. If anything we wouldn't have to call it out for getting pretty much every after 1999 correct, especially 2024, which is the latest year that occurs in the movie. 

V for Vendetta

It's a little difficult to pinpoint exactly when V for Vendetta takes place. Made in 2006, it appears that it takes place in the mid-to-late 2020s. Either way, it's safe to say that we won't be living in a world quite like the dystopian London in the movie. While there are some themes that could work, it's still off. 

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes is the fourth in the original Planet of the Apes series but it's the only that fits on this list. While most of the movies take place centuries in the future, the "planet's" origin story is set in the 1980s and '90s. The movie was made in 1972, so it's really more of a horror story for viewers at the time. 

Death Race 2000

Death Race 2000, released in 1975 was set only 25 years in the future, as the name of the movie implies. While it is one heck of a b-movie, starring Sylvester Stallone and David Carradine, it gets everything about the totalitarian future it predicts at the turn of the century. The idea of a road race across the country as TV entertainment isn't that far off though. 

A Clockwork Orange

Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange was released in 1971 and puts forth the idea of a dystopian future where gangs of oddly dressed teenagers commit unthinkable acts of violence. The year is never directly revealed in the movie, but it seems like some alternate timeline of the 1960s by the style of decor. The movie is based on a book of the same name by Anthony Burgess. In Burgess' diary, he revealed that it was intended to be set in 1980. 

1984

George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four has twice been made into a film. The first, on BBC, in 1954 and the second in 1984. Ignoring the one in '84, the future predicted by Orwell and the '53 film got everything wrong. Sure, there are elements that we worry about today, and "Big Brother" has become part of the modern lexicon, but there was no nuclear war in the 1960s and the world is not divided into only three countries. 

A Scanner Darkly

This one is a little tricky to nail down when in the future it takes place, but hear us out. The original story on which the movie was based, was published in 1977 and set in 1994. The animated movie, A Scanner Darkly, directed by Richard Linklater, was released in 2006. By doing the same math, we arrive at 2023 and either way, both stories are way off. 

The Island

In 2006, Michael Bay directed The Island with Scarlett Johansson and Ewan McGregor. It's not a well reviewed film, nor was it a hit, nor did it get the future of 2019 correct either. Like many on this list, it's set in a dystopian future that just didn't come to pass. At some point, writers and directors are just going to have to give up on predicting the downfall of human civilization, right?

Alien Intruder

1993's Alien Intruder, starring Billy Dee Williams, is a crude, terrible movie that frankly, we're glad it got 2022 wrong. Not just because a future like that looks terrifying and we're glad it didn't happen, but because no movie this bad deserves to be right. One thing we will say is that it did almost get the virtual reality stuff correct...at least what it will be used for, which we'd rather not talk about. 

Escape From LA

15 years after John Carpenter and Kurt Russell made Escape From New York, they returned for Escape From LA in 1996. In the movie, an earthquake in 2000 cut off Los Angeles from the mainland, and a prison was set up on the new island. In 2006, Snake Plissken (Russell) basically did what he did in New York. Last we checked, LA was just fine in 2006. 

Demolition Man

1993's Demolition Man with Sylvester Stallone and Sandra Bullock technically takes place in 2032, so we've got some time to see how close it is to reality (hint: not close), but it's on this list because the two main characters played by Stallone and Wesley Snipes were cryogenically frozen in 1996. To date, we still don't have that kind of technology. 

Mission to Mars

In 2000 Tim Robbins, Don Cheadle, and Gary Sinise starred in Mission to Mars, about the first manned mission to Mars. The film is set in 2020, which may have made it plausible in 2000, but it sure did miss the mark as we are not much closer today than we were then with that prospect. Maybe by 2035, when Matt Damon's The Martian is set, we'll get there. 

Barb Wire

Okay Okay, we admit, it's unfair to pick a movie like Barb Wire, starring Pamela Anderson, for its accuracy, but still, here we go. Set in 2017, this 1996 movie plays on the premise that a second Civil War is underway. Who would ever believe that by 2017 the political climate would be such that a civil war could even be the faintest bit possible? Certainly, the makers of the film would know that by 2017 everyone would be living in peace and harmony in the US and the political division would...wait a minute...just how wrong is this one? Yikes. 

The main takeaway from this list of movies set in the future but now in the past? Filmmakers need to choose dates way into the future. Buck Rogers isn't on this list because it's 500 years in the future! That's the way to do it. 

I would like to make something clear right off the bat: I mean absolutely no disrespect to any person who might call themselves a fan of the movies below and even celebrate the fact that many found them impressive and satisfying. However, I — as well as many other moviegoers and critics alike — unfortunately, found them to be lackluster and disappointing, especially when you consider the potential they had to be something really great based on their otherwise unique and amusing concepts. So, please bear with me as I explain why I feel the following films could be considered a missed opportunity.

In Time (2011)

This sci-fi thriller from writer and director Andrew Niccol is set in a future in which people stop aging past 25, but can only continue to live if they have enough time, which has, literally, been adopted as society's only currency. With a concept like that, In Time could have been one of Justin Timberlake’s best movies, but, the execution is widely seen as just a bland, cliche-ridden mess.

65 (2023)

I was on board for 65 based on the idea of seeing Academy Award nominee Adam Driver pitted against dinosaurs alone. Yet, somehow, writers and directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods — then best known for writing the gripping A Quiet Place — ended up putting out a sci-fi thriller that many critics, moviegoers, and myself found quite dull. 

Downsizing (2017) 

I really admire what director Alexander Payne and his co-writer, Jim Taylor, were going for with Downsizing — a Matt Damon-led satire set in a world in which shrinking to 5 inches tall proves to be a revolutionary economic solution. Yet, I found the humor weak (if not absent, to be honest) and, if it were me, I would have stuck with one social issue to comment on instead of jamming multiple into one story.

Jumper (2008)

Hayden Christensen plays a man who can instantly teleport to wherever he pleases, but must contend with a secret society determined to eliminate his kind. The mere concept behind director Doug Liman’s Jumper should constitute a winner, but critics felt that low-stakes action, aimless plot twists, and two-dimensional characters led the story nowhere.

Chappie (2015)

Movies about a friendly A.I. are nothing new, but Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie seemed to be going in an interesting direction by giving the titular robot (voiced by Sharlto Copley) a refreshing human quality and partnering him up with a pair of criminals (played by South African hip-hop duo Die Antwoord) hoping to use him for their bidding. Unfortunately, I felt the story quickly dismantled itself into a misguided mess with irritating attempts at humor and cartoonish antagonists played by Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver.

Passengers (2016)

For anyone who has not seen Passengers — in which two commercial interplanetary travelers wake up way too soon — I am afraid I must give away a major plot point hidden in the marketing to explain why I and many others were put off by it. The romantic appeal of this outer space love story is ruined when Chris Pratt's lonely protagonist intentionally and selfishly wakes up Jennifer Lawrence's character, a role the actor even admitted Adele warned her against accepting.

Bright (2017)

When I first learned about Bright, a modern-day police drama set in a storybook fantasy world from director David Ayer and writer Max Landis, I was immediately under its spell. Sadly, it broke when I watched the Will Smith and Joel Edgerton-led Netflix original that I thought was ruined by stunted and nonsensical world-building, tired cop movie cliches, weak dialogue, and an irritatingly on-the-nose social allegory.

The Wedding Ringer (2015)

Kevin Hart’s character in The Wedding Ringer makes a living posing as the best man for grooms-to-be, which I found to be a very amusing idea. Unfortunately, I thought it was wasted by generic plot conventions, uninspired humor, and a bafflingly heavy-handed execution of an already weak plot twist near the end.

Hancock (2008)

Some might believe that Hancock is one of Will Smith’s best movies — or even one of the best superhero movies not inspired by a comic book — based on its fun “degenerate Superman” concept. The promising idea impressed the action-comedy’s toughest critics, too, before the story evolved into a hokey melodrama, resulting in an uneven misstep overall in their eyes.

Transcendence (2014)

In Transcendence, Johnny Depp plays a tech inventor who uploads his consciousness into his groundbreaking software at the brink of death. However, many believe that the film, directed by Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister, does not really bother to make a unique or substantial comment on man's relationship with machines like Black Mirror and other better movies would soon after.

The Percy Jackson Movies (2010-2013)

This big-screen franchise based on Rick Riordan's young adult fantasy series never even reached completion because fans were unhappy with the unnecessary changes from the source material and critics found them simply derivative and disengaging. At least Percy Jackson and the Olympians got a second chance as a Disney+ original series years later.

Waterworld (1995)

There are those who have their reasons to call Waterworld awesome, including its brilliantly conceived concept of a dystopian Earth where land no longer exists. The rest of the world feels that the commercially unsuccessful adventure is watered down by Kevin Costner’s dull protagonist and over-the-top silliness throughout that ruins its earnest intentions.

Old (2021)

I actually have something good to say about Old, inspired by the French graphic novel Sandcastle, which follows vacationers trapped on a beach that causes rapid aging. It might have surpassed The Happening as the ultimate example of an M. Night Shyamalan movie that makes seemingly unintentional comedy out of otherwise horrifying circumstances with unconvincing character motivations and even less believable dialogue.

Sucker Punch (2011)

According to most critics, the problem with Sucker Punch, starring Emily Browning as an institutionalized young woman dreaming of an escape, is not necessarily a poor execution of its plot. They feel Zack Snyder's otherwise visually stunning, action-packed, female-driven steampunk fantasy lacks anything that could discernibly be called a "plot" and characters that offer much more than their surface value.

The Dark Tower (2017)

One of author Stephen King’s most beloved efforts is The Dark Tower, an eight-part series consisting of eight novels, a short story, and a children’s book following a gunslinger’s quest to reach the eponymous landmark in a bizarre alternate reality. Director Nicola Arcel’s 95-minute film adaptation, starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, was meant to be an introduction to a companion TV show that never happened, due to critics' belief that it was rushed and bland and fans feeling it bore little to no resemblance to the source material.

The Meg (2018)

A movie in which one of the largest aquatic predators in history — a megalodon — wreaking havoc in modern-day waters should have easily earned itself a spot among the best shark movies of all time. However, even people like me who found some enjoyment in director Jon Turtletaub’s The Meg, starring Jason Statham, agree that this thriller about such a big beast feels a little too small.

The Invention Of Lying (2009)

Star Ricky Gervais, who also co-writes and directs with Matthew Robinson, struck gold by envisioning a world in which human beings have not developed the ability to be dishonest. Yet, The Invention of Lying seems more concerned with its mean-spirited satirization — if not full-blown condemnation — of the concept of religious faith that is not as bold as it aspires to be and, quite frankly, I did not find it very funny.

The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)

One of Alan Moore’s most acclaimed comic book series is The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which groups legendary literary figures like Jekyll/Hyde, the Invisible Man, and Dracula’s Bride together. The film adaptation is believed to be what drove Sir Sean Connery, who stars as Alan Quartermain, into retirement after his numerous on-set conflicts with director Stephen Norrington and personal attempt to save the picture in the editing room.

Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008)

The plot of Repo! The Genetic Opera, set in a dystopian future in which transplanted organs are violently taken away from customers who miss payments, is so unique and thought-provoking, it’s no surprise it was stolen just two years later by Repo Men. I could get behind making it a musical, too, but felt the actors couldn’t carry a note and the narrative lacked any real weight, resulting in the one film from Darren Lynn Bousman (director of multiple Saw movies) that makes me squirm the most, personally.

The Age Of Adaline (2015)

Blake Lively does give a wonderful performance in the title role of The Age of Adaline, which follows a woman’s struggles to blend in over the course of several decades after mysteriously becoming immortal. That’s the best thing I can say about it, personally, as I feel the story is unfairly relegated to a hokey romantic drama that relies far too heavily on voice-over narration in even the most unnecessary moments. 

Pixels (2015)

Director Chris Columbus’ Pixels could have been a really fun sci-fi flick in which ordinary people with extraordinary video game skills are tasked with defending Earth from aliens made to look like classic 8-bit characters. Unfortunately, most moviegoers and critics alike feel it is one of Adam Sandler’s weakest films, mainly due to its consistently hollow attempts at humor.

Mortal Engines (2018)

Peter Jackson co-wrote and produced this adaptation of Phillip Reeve’s young adult novel set in a dystopian London that has been rebuilt into one large machine running out of resources. The otherwise visually spectacular Mortal Engines proved to be a critical and commercial disappointment, however, with many believing it felt too reminiscent of other and, arguably, better post-apocalyptic thrillers of the past.

Jupiter Ascending (2015)

Moviegoers and critics alike do applaud the spectacular world Lana and Lily Wachowski created for Jupiter Ascending, starring Mila Kunis as a woman who discovers she is intergalactic royalty. However, they also feel that the performances are either too reserved or too outlandish, the story choices teeter between bizarre and baffling, and the otherwise inventive world-building is better suited for a TV show than a feature-length runtime.

Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)

Putting Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman in an '80s-style popcorn flick is a great idea, but fans and critics alike feel that Wonder Woman 1984 is one of the weaker DCEU entries, if not just a dip in quality from its hit 2017 predecessor. The sequel’s detractors cite overly ridiculous action sequences, awkward and broken dialogue, and the already needless return of Chris Pine’s late character, Steve Trevor, in an unnecessarily creepy way: possessing the body of a random person.

Splice (2010)

Vincenzo Natali co-writes and directs this sci-fi/horror flick starring Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley as genetic engineers who make a breakthrough in DNA splicing that proves to have groundbreaking, but disastrous, consequences. As far as I am concerned, Splice’s intriguing nature vs. nurture commentary was ruined by one particular scene that is so revoltingly off-putting, that I cannot bear to describe it. Anyone who has seen it probably has a clue, though.

Children Of The Corn (1984)

Weak acting, weaker pacing, and special effects that were cheesy even in the ‘80s make this horror film about a town overrun with murderous children a cult classic that does not live up to its reputation, in my eyes. However, I would say I prefer this adaptation of Stephen King’s Children of the Corn over its sequels and more recent remakes from 2009 and 2020.

The Lovely Bones (2009)

Peter Jackson’s adaptation of author Alice Sebold’s young adult fantasy thriller features great performances by Saoirse Ronan as a murdered teen protagonist and an Oscar-nominated Stanley Tucci as her killer. Those who do not care for The Lovely Bones feel that even those admirable qualities are bogged down by the film’s egregious preoccupation with its CGI-heavy depiction of purgatory.

Formula 51 (2001)

Samuel L. Jackson stars as a skilled chemist looking to score big by selling his valuable product to mobsters in Formula 51, a comedy that was regarded as a weak attempt to replicate Guy Ritchie’s style upon release.

Blood Quantum (2020)

“Bad” is truly an overstatement for how I feel about Blood Quantum, which follows indigenous Canadians immune to a virus that kills and reanimates victims through biting. However, I do find it largely unsatisfying how a film that boasts one of the most refreshingly unique concepts for a zombie movie I have ever heard suffers from a narrative that resorts to all-too-familiar cliches in the subgenre.

Elysium (2013)

Following the success of District 9, Neill Blomkamp made a second attempt at a socially conscious sci-fi thriller with Elysium, in which Matt Damon plays one of many impoverished Earthlings longing for an artificial planet where the wealthy live free of health concerns. The on-the-nose political commentary is not the issue, or, at least as much as the generic action movie conventions, surface-level characters, and Jodie Foster's lazy antagonistic performance are.

The Purge (2013)

The Purge cleverly imagines a future in which all crime is legal for one night of the year, but critics feel that it does not utilize its concept to its full potential. As a result, the Blumhouse hit is just another unremarkable home invasion thriller, which spawned a franchise that still has rarely explored the potential of its concept beyond the belief that the world is full of sociopaths.

Prometheus (2012)

Ridley Scott's space travel epic, Prometheus, rides high on glorious visuals and moments of intense horror, but low in imagination and brains in just about every facet. Not to mention, attempting to offer some origin for the Alien franchises’ flagship creature, the Xenomorph, is, arguably, unnecessary enough already

I am a firm believer in the phrase, “If at first you don’t succeed, try again.” Thus, these are the few examples of movies I would actually love to see earn a remake with the hope that they could be reimagined into something that reaches their full potential. 

For the most part, this year’s Halloween Horror Nights event seems to be bringing the same set of thrills to everything new at both Universal parks. However, that tune has changed with the latest news out of Universal Hollywood, as an exclusive stage show spectacular in the world of The Purge has been announced. While that’s exciting news on its own, this announcement has also given me an idea for a sequel, and now, I’m even more pumped to learn what happens in this new theme park experience.

The Exclusive Purge Show Heading To Universal Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights

Universal Parks and Resorts have freshly announced the existence of The Purge: Dangerous Waters; and it already sounds like a thrill and a half. Below is the official synopsis for this new parks experience from the world of writer/director James DeMonaco’s creation. Fans of the series will do well to take note of certain details in the rundown you’re about to read, which comes from an official press release highlighting this event:

Based on how The Purge works, as well as the timeframe of The Purge: Dangerous Waters putting this installment at a decade past the original film, it sounds like this unnamed political player isn’t all that important. At the very least, he fails to meet the older requirement of being a “ranking 10” government official, which was only repealed as part of The Purge: Election Year’s 2040 presidential election. As you can see, there’s already a window for die-hard fans to start wondering just what to expect. 

And yet, there’s more fun that awaits past the slightly far-flung future we saw in The Forever Purge’s ending. Just as the name of this new Universal Studios Hollywood show experience implies, the next step of this series feels ripe to enter one of the most claustrophobic settings ever: a cruise ship on open water.

It’s Time For A Purge Entry Focused On The High Seas

Stick with me on this, but throughout The Purge movies, we’ve seen murder tourists flock to the United States in order to purge and purify without consequences. While James DeMonaco already has ideas for a Purge sequel’s setting, that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for a high-seas adventure to take place in this universe.

As we’ve seen in previous entries, the timeline of The Purge movies in order has some pretty big gaps that could be filled with a tale like this one. Roving gangs of deadly tourists could make short work of plenty of victims with this pleasure vessel occupying the United States waters, but being far enough to make a swim a perilous journey. 

Using the same sort of “survive the night” formula, we’d have a more enclosed field of play; similar to what we saw in The First Purge. But at the same time, this would obviously have to take place before The Forever Purge, as that story’s Ever After Purgers have forced the United States into the next civil war. 

Obviously, there would need to be some careful thought as to how this hypothetical scenario fits into the overall structure of The Purge universe. Even if it doesn’t take place on a cruise ship, seeing an entry that uses open water as its playground of carnage is something that could take this saga to the next level. 

Bringing it all back to the present, you can catch The Purge: Dangerous Waters only at Universal Studios Hollywood. Kicking off on September 7th, you’ll probably want to secure your tickets and snag your spot for the next round of The Purge's adventure. Just remember to watch it with someone you trust watching your back.

Writer/director James DeMonaco has put a great deal of thought into the construction of the world featured in the Purge franchise. He's carefully mapped out the alternate history of America that is portrayed in the horror series, and it has led him to not only craft the stories that we've seen on the big screen, but also think about how hospitals function during the titular event and what happens in prisons. It's amount of consideration that he puts into the world that makes each new sequel exciting, and he has some exceptionally exciting plans for the untitled Purge 6.

The last movie, The Forever Purge, featured a time jump to the year 2048 and ended with America melting down, and the next chapter will see the country rebuilt without the familiar 50 state construction. James DeMonaco recently spoke about his plans for The Purge 6 with Variety, and while doing so, he revealed that America is going to look quite different in the film. Said the filmmaker,

From the filmmaker's comments, it sounds as though the plotting of The Purge 6 will be familiar to fans of the franchise (following relatively innocent civilians as they try and survive the terror and carnage that comes from the lawlessness of The Purge), but what will make the sequel stand out compared to its predecessors is the radical setting.

When The Forever Purge was released in 2021, there was chatter about it being the final Purge movie, but James DeMonaco evidently can't stop coming up with new ideas for the franchise – which, to date, includes five movies and two seasons of a television series. According to the new trade report, DeMonaco completed the script for The Purge 6 "about eight months ago," and he's evidently found a way to bring back Leo Barnes, the fan-favorite character from The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year played by Frank Grillo.

Exactly when we can expect to see The Purge 6 is unknown, as Universal Pictures and Blumhouse have not yet announced a release date for the film. At the very least we know that it's not coming before 2024. That being said, if you wish to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the original The Purge, the movie is available to stream with a Peacock subscription (along with The Purge: Election Year and The Purge TV series).

“Huluween” may be over but, with all the great horror TV shows on Hulu, it is still one of the best streaming services to subscribe to for a good scare no matter what time of year. The Fades (2011)

Castle Rock (2018-2019)

What it’s about: A small town in Maine lives up to its grim reputation after a lawyer (played by Andre Holland) returns to defend a man (played by Bill Skarsgård) secretly held captive for decades, and later when a desperate single mother (played by Lizzy Caplan) makes an emergency stop that sets off a horrifying chain of events.

Why it is one of the best horror TV shows on Hulu: The titular community of Castle Rock refers to a fictional place that shows up in many stories by horror master Stephen King, whose most famous characters are either directly involved or cleverly referenced in each of the two multi-episodic arcs explored in this beautifully crafted, prematurely canceled seasonal anthology.

Why it is one of the best horror TV shows on Hulu: Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, and others make up the cast of recurring actors who play a variety of characters that span decades, and even planes of existence, in American Horror Story – Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s collection of exhilarating, psychosexual, multi-episodic thrillers which will keep you from looking at the genre the same way ever again.

Blumhouse Productions quite literally knocks it out of the park. To me, when it comes to some of the best horror movies out there, Blumhouse consistently delivers. From some of the most recent horror films back to those from the early '00s, this company has been behind a lot of them.

I’m talking about Speak No Evil, The Black Phone, Get Out - so many great ones that have truly changed the genre from the ground up. If you’re like me and you’re looking for the best Blumhouse horror movies to watch right now, here are some of my picks.

Paranormal Activity (2009)

This iconic found footage horror film follows a young couple who are haunted by a supernatural presence in their home, all captured through found footage and security cameras.

Paranormal Activity is an iconic horror movie for its use of found footage, and I think it made found footage movies more popular than ever before. It created a horror series that has truly become so successful - even if some of the later entries aren’t as good as the first. Be sure to check out all the movies in order.

The Purge (2013)

In a newly reformed America, The Purge tells the story of the one night in the country where all crime is allowed, including murder. A family that is trying to survive the night ends up helping a stranger - and, in turn, brings a whole new hell to their lives.

I remember when I saw the first The Purge, I didn’t think it was that scary, but after re-watching it several times, what really makes this film so good is that it relies on the horror aspects of human nature, and what a person can do when they have no limits. Plus, Ethan Hawke’s performance is stellar - a horror movie master. It’s honestly one of Hawke’s best movies.

Split (2017)

M. Night Shyamalan is a master of his craft, and while he did have a bit of a career dip, he’s come back with some awesome films as of late, including Split. This horror film, starring James McAvoy in one of his best movies, follows a man who has several different personalities, and the girls that are captured by him and their struggle for survival.

Split is genuinely a great time, featuring awesome performances from both McAvoy and the fabulous Anya Taylor-Joy in one of her best films. Shyamalan really gave his all making this film and I’ll never get over his classic twists and turns.

Happy Death Day (2017)

Happy Death Day, a hilarious horror-comedy, follows a young woman who has to relive the same day she was killed over and over again. With each death, she tries to piece together clues about who kills her so that she can stop her endless cycle of death.

This movie is so funny, and it didn’t need to be, but I’m so happy it is. Not only are the scares good and the gore great as well, there’s just something about this movie that makes me snort every time. I love the line delivery from Jessica Rothe, too. Truly, such a great actress for the lead role.

Sinister (2012)

Sinister, starring Ethan Hawke, tells the story of a writer and his family who move into a home that is haunted by a supernatural presence, but he later discovers that it was the spot where murders took place decades ago.

Let me tell you, Sinister was one of the first horror films I watched, and oh, what a film to start out on. This movie will shake you to your core and make you look at every dark corner of your house because it is fantastically directed and I can’t get enough of it.

Five Nights At Freddy’s (2023)

Based on the video game of the same name, Five Nights at Freddy’s follows a security guard who discovers that the animatronics at a pizza parlor he is working at come to life at night, but there’s more to these possessed creatures than meets the eye.

As someone who grew up watching (and playing) the Five Nights at Freddy’s games, I will openly say that I think this film delivered and more. I think the movie was really made for the fans of the franchise, with plenty of easter eggs and moments that really only true FNAF lovers will understand. Also, it brought Josh Hutcherson back into the spotlight, so I can’t complain too much. There’s even a sequel in development, so you might as well watch the first.

Insidious (2011)

Insidious began another great horror franchise. In this iconic horror film, a mother and father are trying to seek help when their son falls into a coma, and later learn it’s because of a strange demon in their home. Now, they must prevent evil spirits from trapping their son in a different world.

Insidious, at least the first one, is so well done. While the later sequels lost some of their horror aspects, there’s just something about the first that just does it for me. The scars, the story, the acting; everything is just *chef’s kiss.* You can even check out our ranking of all the Insidious movies.

Unseen (2023)

You might not have heard of this movie, but I assure you it’s a great one, at least to me. Unseen is a horror film from Yoko Okumura and follows the story of a gas station clerk who receives a call from someone who is trying to survive her ex. Now, the gas station clerk has to work to somehow aid the woman and keep her alive from afar.

I just think this premise is so neat. It’s such an interesting way to frame a story, and it makes me wonder how many other creative ways exist out there in order to tell a horror tale. Both Midori Francis and Jolene Purdy offer amazing performances, and give it their all.

Nanny (2022)

I’m putting this one back on the list because it still continues to impress me years later. Nanny is the psychological horror film that will mess you up in the best way, and follows an immigrant who takes the job of a nanny to an Upper East Side child, only for her life to turn upside down when strange things begin to occur.

Nanny is great, and that’s all I really want to say without spoiling too much. The story itself can be, at times, confusing, but personally, it just makes you want to rewatch the film to catch things you missed before, only furthering the detail of the plot. It’s such a great psychological horror movie.

Cam (2018)

Ever wonder how a webcam could control your life? That’s what Cam aims to answer, as it follows a young woman who performs erotic acts on a webcam, but one day, she finds that her identity has been stolen because an exact clone of herself has replaced her on camera.

I put Cam on here because like Paranormal Activity, I feel like it really does something different with the horror genre by exploring something that not a lot of horror movies have done - how technology can be scary as hell. Something else I really love about it is the psychological aspect. It really messes with your mind.

The Invisible Man (2020)

Starring Elisabeth Moss, The Invisible Man is based on the novel of the same name and follows the story of a young woman who believes she is being stalked by her manipulative and abusive ex-boyfriend, who has somehow turned himself invisible, while also taking out those close to her.

I remember watching The Invisible Man when it was released on streaming in my college apartment, and I enjoyed the heck out of it. Not only does Elisabeth Moss give a compelling performance, but the idea itself is unsettling enough where you’ll be thinking someone is somehow watching you, even though it’s impossible. It’s truly one of a kind.

Get Out (2017)

You knew this would be on here. In Get Out, a young Black man travels with his white girlfriend to her family’s home, and while at first everything seems to be normal, he slowly starts to discover that this place is not what he thought it was - and now, he needs to get out.

This is a movie where I don’t even want to say much, because it’ll spoil the twists if you haven’t seen it. Just know that Get Out won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay (which Jordan Peele had a relatable reaction to), which was written by first-time director (at the time), Jordan Peele. It’s one of the decade’s best horror films, with a fantastic leading performance from Daniel Kaluuya.

Us (2019)

Another Jordan Peele feature on this list, and one of Peele’s best movies, Us follows a family that gets away for a weekend to their family’s summer cabin, but while they’re there, doppelgangers that look exactly like them start to wreak havoc on their lives.

Again, Jordan Peele is becoming a master of twists, and the last thing I want to do is spoil this for you. Just know that the Us cast is phenomenal and the story will have you gripping your seats from start to end. Go watch it now.

Halloween (2018)

Hear me out. Halloween, which is a sequel to the iconic 1978 horror film of the same name, follows Laurie Strode, now an older woman preparing herself and her family for the return of Michael Myers. He ends up breaking free due to a bus crashing during his transfer - and he is coming right home to her.

I love this franchise. It was one of the first films I ever watched, and I have seen all the Halloween sequels and ranked them, and this one is, hands down, the best sequel. Jamie Lee Curtis is freaking amazing in the lead role, and Michael is somehow even scarier.

Freaky (2020)

Freaky is basically Freaky Friday, but with murder. When a serial killer and a teenage girl end up switching bodies, it’s up to the teenager - now stuck in the body of a murderer - to get her body back and stop the actual killer from taking more lives - while in her body.

Freaky is so funny. The first time I heard the concept I couldn't believe it was an actual thing, but upon watching, I really enjoyed it. Vince Vaughn honestly gives a great performance, and Kathryn Newton is fantastic, as well. I loved both of them.

The Black Phone (2022)

I freaking loved The Black Phone when I saw it in theaters in 2022. When a series of kids are nabbed by someone called “The Grabber,” his latest victim must find a way out, with the help of a mysterious black phone in his cage.

Another Ethan Hawke performance that is stellar, but what makes this movie so good, to be honest, is that it’s more suspenseful than scary. I genuinely loved every second of this, from beginning to end, and The Black Phone ending is just perfect.

M3GAN (2023)

We have to bring up M3GAN. If you were into horror at the beginning of 2023, you knew about this dang dancing doll. The horror movie tells the story of an A.I. Doll that is used to be a companion to a girl who recently lost her parents, but soon, the doll becomes obsessed with its child – and will take out anyone that dares step in her way.

M3GAN was the campy story that everyone loved and needed. While I wasn’t the hugest fan of it before and didn’t quite get the movie, I’ve given it some time to marinate inside my brain and I have to admit, it’s one of the best horror movies of this year, if not for the hilariously bloody moments it inspired. There’s even a M3GAN 2.0 sequel in development, so you might as well check it out now.

Speak No Evil (2024)

I have to talk about Speak No Evil. Starring James McAvoy and based on the 2022 Danish film of the same name, this 2024 horror movie is one of the best of the year. It follows the story of an American family who stay at the farmhouse of a British family, but as time goes on, they start to realize that their hosts are not as kind as they seem and begin to fear for their lives.

I just have to say that James McAvoy doesn’t miss when it comes to horror. He gave his all in Split, and he certainly gives his all in Speak No Evil, and by the time you finish watching it, you’ll be enjoying it (and his acting) just as much as I did.

Which one of these are you going to watch next? I think it’s time for a horror movie marathon.

Years ago, filmmakers like John Carpenter, Wes Craven, or George A. Romero were referred to as “horror auteurs” until the term, essentially, vanished from the zeitgeist as the genre seemed to suffer a creative slump. However, with a few particular new horror movies being some of the strongest we have ever seen, in my opinion, I think that we can safely say that the age of the “horror auteur” is back, and one of the leading examples is Jordan Peele.

Outside of Peele's own original work - including the Oscar-winning Get Out, 2019’s Us, and his upcoming alien invasion flick, Nope - one thing that has impressed me most about Peele is how he has helped breathe new life into older favorites of the genre, like by co-writing and producing the 2021 Candyman sequel with director Nia DaCosta and filling Rod Serling’s shoes as executive producer and narrator of Paramount+’s The Twilight Zone reboot. Given the widely positive responses to each, I couldn’t help but wonder what other classic horror movie franchises could benefit from his magic touch, starting with one that is especially reflective of his talent for scary and satirical entertainment. 

Tales From The Hood

What makes 1995’s Tales from the Hood one of the most essential anthology horror movies is the clever, nuanced social commentary in each scary segment that is just as timely (if not more so) today. However, I personally believe its two straight-to-video sequels from 2018 and 2020 are not nearly as clever, nuanced, or scary, even with original co-writers Rusty Cundieff and Darin Scott at the helm and Spike Lee returning to executive produce. 

Perhaps getting Jordan Peele (a master in the clever, the nuanced, and the scary) involved to help pen, produce, or even direct a new batch of segments could be what the franchise needs to reclaim its stature in Black horror cinema.

The Purge

Speaking of horror movies noted for their social commentary, The Purge franchise was created as a bold meditation on America’s obsession with violence by being set in a future that allows the most violent behavior, without consequence, one night a year. 

Despite its innovative concept and the urgency of its message, I do not believe that any of the five films in the series so far have truly reached their full potential, particularly in their narrative execution and how rarely they broaden the topic of legalization beyond executions. I would like to see how Jordan Peele might attack this material and what unique ideas he could add to the franchise’s already inventive roots in a sixth installment.

Friday The 13th

A franchise that truly deserves another installment to bring its quantity to a fitting 13 is the Friday the 13 movies, which is also one of the most ripped off slasher series ever (despite the 1980 original being a Halloween rip-off, admittedly). 

Because the formula of a masked killer stalking young, promiscuous campers has been beaten to death, I think Jason Voorhees’ return to the big screen (if not for an ongoing legal dispute over the property) could use a real boost in creativity. I think Jordan Peele could be the man to do it for his rejection of well-known genre tropes and, as he told the Wall Street Journal, the fact that he does not find Jason very scary, but might know how to make him scarier.

Phantasm

When the Wall Street Journal asked Jordan Peele whom he would include in his Avengers-style line-up of horror movie villains, he listed common must-haves like Freddy Krueger and Chucky, but also mentioned “one of the silver balls from Phantasm.” 

I would agree that that is one of the freakiest and most iconic horror movie props of all time, but hate to say that I do not love very much more about Don Coscarelli’s bizarre cult favorite or its sequels, personally. However, a reboot with a fresh dose of Peele’s visual style and complex narrative talent sounds like a fun idea.

28 Days Later…

One of the most unique and realistic zombie movies, 28 Days Later… is a film that, in my opinion, has yet to spawn a sequel that matches the quality of the original (a poignant humanist parable) instead of being more concerned about the virus theme like 28 Weeks Later was. 

Well, in the midst of Covid-19, now might actually be the best time to resurrect the franchise with the long-awaited 28 Months Later, which could also be Jordan Peele’s first zombie movie if he were involved. To be clear, I would not necessarily want to see him take over from director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland completely, but the idea of Peele collaborating with those two on such a project is an exhilarating thought on its own, is it not?

Saw

Another franchise that has not quite lived up to its more unique and thought-provoking original (again, just in my opinion) is the Saw movies. James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell’s feature-length debut was a bold commentary on the value of life wrapped up in an engrossing mystery thriller, whereas the sequels became more and more about how much deadlier and more deranged the centerpiece traps could get. I think it is time the series went back to basics, and Jordan Peele’s unique use of mystery in his storytelling could be the key.

Final Destination

Speaking of franchises that became increasingly concerned with inventive death scenes, let’s talk about the Final Destination movies for a second. I think that the five (and counting) films in this series about youths struggling to outrun death itself are a set of wonderfully twisted guilty pleasures, but also believe that they have the potential to be (and say) more with their intriguing main concept. If anybody can bring stronger storytelling and symbolic themes to a film that is mainly defined by what it does visually, it has to be Jordan Peele.

Paranormal Activity

On the flipside, the Paranormal Activity movies were initially praised for having a simple plot with effective scares until becoming bogged down by an increasingly confusing, non-linear timeline. Thus, it was refreshing to hear that the seventh installment, Next of Kin, would be a standalone, but neither fans nor critics were very impressed by that one, either. Looks like this series of found footage thrillers is yet another that Jordan Peele’s gifts for suspense and storytelling could help save.

On second thought, maybe I just want to see Jordan Peele make a found footage movie. That does not necessarily mean he would have to make a Paranormal Activity film. Either way, I am and always will be excited for whatever he has in store next.

I am really excited to see Ethan Hawke as the villain of Moon Knight, which will not only mark his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but his first-ever role in a comic book adaptation. That fact is actually a bit surprising, considering what a versatile career the Academy Award-nominated actor and filmmaker has had since his youth, which includes a number of horror movies and some intriguing sci-fi dramas, too.

From the spine-chilling sounds of chainsaw gears to snarls in our ears and dark corners of mazes to brace for jump scares, Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights has remained a staple experience for fans of frights to flock to each season. The horrors of 2020 may have paused theme park plans last Halloween, but Universal is back in business this spooky season, and with sweet vengeance. But seriously, this is an especially great year to brave Universal's seasonal event.

CinemaBlend had the chance to live inside the darkly fun delights of Universal Hollywood Horror Nights on opening night, and in turn have some early insights to perhaps help you plan your visit. If you’re looking to go out to Florida, you can check out our ranking of those mazes, but if sunny California is your destination, you’re in the right place. There are eight mazes at HHN this year, and every one of them are honestly a great time. But if you’re looking to just hit the highlights, here's your guide to each and every one. As far as this ranking goes, my tastes did somewhat align with the horror franchises I was personally more attached to for the most part, so keep that in mind.

8. The Walking Dead

If you’ve been to Universal Studios Hollywood between The Walking Dead attraction’s opening in 2016 and this Halloween, chances are you’ve already made this adventure. This maze has been a year-round fixture to the theme park for years now, and for this season’s festivities, HHN didn’t do a thing to switch things up for its immersive presentation of the AMC hit series. However, this is the only place to meet a few zombies at Horror Nights and is always a good immersive reminder about how much this TV zombie apocalypse has remained in our blood and guts.

7. The Exorcist

If the power of Christ compels you to check this one out, it’s one of two mazes on the Lower Lot of the park. 1973’s The Exorcist is, of course, known as one of the most terrifying and truly unsettling movies of all time. The Exorcist maze captures the demonic possession of Regan MacNeil with some exacting sets that take you right back to the movie in a really disquieting way. Yes, there’s Regan upside down on the stairs and writhing in pain in her bedroom and really all over this maze. It had my stomach in twists and turns and looking for the nearest exit. Certainly it’s enveloping, but this one caters best to the dead-serious horror fans.

6. Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The second maze on the Lower Lot is Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which has had many iterations at Halloween Horror Nights over the years. Taking after another ‘70s original, this is the goriest maze at this year’s HHN, as it takes audiences into Leatherface’s house full of human skin and chainsaws. This maze absolutely achieves the icky feeling of being in a house you know you need to get out of, and chooses its scares with a quiet, yet twisted approach. Much like The Exorcist, it’s lower on the list because it’s lacking in a variety of scares. It’s basically one chainsaw coming at you after the other. Still, this one is pretty hardcore and you’ll feel like you really survived something after it.

5. The Curse Of Pandora’s Box

Heads up on The Curse of Pandora’s Box maze, if you went to Hollywood Horror Nights back in 2019, you may have visited this hellscape before, as it is the only repeat from last time’s HHN. Located at the far right side of the park past The Wizarding World, this maze is incredibly fun in how relentless yet wacky it is. It benefits from not being based on a specific property, because its monsters and creatures seemingly from the underworld are random, weird and just a good scary time to scream at. I personally ran through one segment of this maze in playful fear of some wall people. Yes, wall people. Is that ridiculous looking back? Absolutely, but this speaks to how enjoyable Pandora’s Box is.

4. Universal Monsters: The Bride of Frankenstein Lives

Word on the street is we’re getting a Bride of Frankenstein movie from Universal sometime in the future. If so, it should be absolutely based on this maze located toward the entrance of Universal Studios Hollywood. It’s completely inspired and a fever dream of iconic old and beautifully-composed horror images. It’s an original maze idea that feels like a spinoff of the fan-favorite, but underutilized Universal monster. There’s a number of appearances of Frankenstein himself, but a steampunk bride takes over here with some femme fatale friends to provide scares as well. It’s oozing with style and loaded with jumpy moments.

3. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers

Based on the 1988 film of the same name, Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers features the slasher favorite and is another repeat, this time from 2018. The maze is filled with a number of iconic images from the Halloween franchise and really encapsulates the ambience of a Halloween film from beginning to end. This maze is truly cinematic and builds tension as you walk through the halls rather than hit you with scare after scare. By the time you’re out of this one, you feel you need to catch a breath. It offers the shameless entertainment of a Halloween slasher, while also being just as decisive as the movies are.

2. The Haunting Of Hill House

Perhaps the most topical maze this year that has most certainly flooded Horror Nights’ marketing is The Haunting of Hill House maze, which takes after the 2018 Netflix series from Mike Flanagan and is located next to Pandora's Box. Hill House is one of my personal favorite horror titles ever, and the maze did not disappoint. While I will say it’s more understated than most of the mazes this year, as a fan of the series, I thought it absolutely found a way to capture the dread of the series and provide slow-burn scares that play very similarly as they do in the show. The use of the Tall Man especially sent me screaming in a visceral way that I won’t give away, but it blew my mind.

1. Terror Tram: The Ultimate Purge

A major highlight of Universal Hollywood’s Horror Nights that sets itself apart from Orlando is the annual Terror Tram. It has a rotating theme each year and gives guests a chance to take the trams used for the studio tours to be dropped off on the actual Universal backlot for even more immersive scares. Terror Tram is back for the first time in not one, but two years with The Ultimate Purge, and it is absolutely relentless. When the tram drops you off, you are met with characters from the Purge franchise going bonkers in front of your eyes, and I gotta say, this is the one that really got in my head.

The scare actors are more confrontational than other mazes, and they will provoke you for that scare. It’s a pretty diabolical pick too, because The Purge franchise doesn’t have a supernatural element to it. It’s heart-pounding, but all around you have to admire how clever and well executed it is. Plus, you find yourself aside some incredible sets from Psycho and War of the Worlds. The sets you often drive past on the studio tour but don’t get to stand and walk through. As tense as The Ultimate Purge, as the name suggests it’s the ultimate Halloween Horror Nights experience.

Over the years, The Purge has established itself as a horror franchise we can expect to see come back again and again to the big screen. But the series centering on a single day set aside for violence and chaos has been met with varying degrees of quality. The latest entry The Forever Purge is the fifth movie from the series and following its release over the weekend, fans have a lot of thoughts about the new angle the franchise took with this summer release.

On the critic front, the reception for The Forever Purge was pretty mixed, with CinemaBlend’s own review by Eric Eisenberg leaning toward the positive side of things, calling it “one of the best Purge movies yet.” From the audience’s side of things, there’s a nice amount of good energy surrounding the release on social media. The Social Commentary In The Forever Purge Struck A Chord

The concept for The Purge is actually derived from a Star Trek episode from 1967 called “The Return of the Archons,” where the Enterprise comes around a planet where its inhabitants enjoy a night of violence each year. Across its breadth of movies, the concept has been explored first in a wealthy neighborhood with the first movie and since expanded to take place during an election year and through 2018’s prequel about the first Purge.

The Forever Purge has the violent event being reinstated by the New Founding Fathers of America and the storyline shifts its focus to a migrant couple who travel from Mexico to Texas while fleeing from a drug cartel. When the Purge reaches their doorstep, the movie deals with undercurrents of white supremacy as the purgers seek to purify those they consider to be non-American. As one fan shared:

Part of why we love horror is how the genre can explore our real fears in an entertaining way. And for many fans of the franchise, The Forever Purge did its job of scaring in a visceral way. Forever Purge Fans Rallied Behind The Mexican And Native American Representation

The Forever Purge is the first Purge movie to be directed by Everado Gout, a Mexican filmmaker that previously helmed National Geographic’s Mars series. By opening the door for a new director, the movie included a number of Mexican and Native American characters that fans appreciated seeing on the big screen. As one fan noted:

America’s grand experiment known as The Purge is back! After The Purge: Election Year would have had you thinking that there’d be no more excitement for the New Founding Fathers to engage in, the national holiday was reinstated. Which means by time we get to The Forever Purge’s ending, the safety people once thought they had has disappeared yet again. And this time, the consequences couldn’t be greater; so if you haven’t seen this film and want to remain unspoiled, turn back and head for the exit. Now let’s start looking into what happened with The Forever Purge.

What Happened At The End Of The Forever Purge?

As the annual Purge Night comes to a close, The Forever Purge starts to pick up steam in its own narrative. With a faction of Purge supporters looking to do exactly what it says in the title, America is now under siege by lawlessness in an uncontrollable state. By the end of director Everardo Valerio Gout’s entry into the Blumhouse franchise’s canon, a full day of purging has seen Mexico and Canada indefinitely close their borders to the United States. Fortunately for some of our protagonists, there was an amnesty period to get across the border to Mexico.

Though they lost one of their own, the group consisting of Juan (Tenoch Huerta) and Adela (Ana de la Reguera), as well as rancher Dylan (Josh Lucas), his sister Harper (Leven Rambin), and his pregnant wife Cassie (Cassidy Freeman) all make it across the border at the end of The Forever Purge. Cassie ends up having her daughter in a refugee camp, as news reports talk about the “American Dreamers” who have made the trip to safety. Though as the closing music tells the audience, “Esto No A Terminado.” This isn’t over.

Where America Stands After The Forever Purge

If you had ever wondered what a new civil war would look like, The Forever Purge has you covered. Two factions are left warring over the nation that was once the United States: Ever After Purgers and those who stand against them. As the movie draws to a close, we see the nation engulfed in literal darkness, only lit by the fires of the combat that rages across the nation in the wake of this unlawful purge.

As previously mentioned, the borders to both Mexico and Canada were open to those fleeing The Forever Purge’s big hoop-tee-doo, but only for a six hour period. Mexico’s border closed even sooner than expected, thanks to Ever After Purgers launching an attack on the gridlock of people trying to leave the nation. Now, with the borders secured, the battle rages on, and not even the New Founding Fathers of America are safe.

The Ever After Purge Movement Explained

As initially constructed by the New Founding Fathers of America, Purge Night was both a sociological release valve for the pressures befalling future America, and also a way to thin the lower-class herd. It was supposed to provide a sense of security and better lives for those who supported the NFFA, as financial prosperity, a 0% crime rate, and lower unemployment were a result. But then the Ever After Purge movement came into play in The Forever Purge, and took the idea a step further.

Ever After Purgers are a splinter faction from the New Founding Fathers of America, and they don’t believe in the same rules. They don’t want to purge for one night only: they want a “Forever Purge.” Continuing to wreck and ravage the country, Ever After Purgers didn’t stop when those 7 AM horns blared, and they’re ready to take back their country. Which leads to the most disturbing scenario that could make for an amazing new sequel.

Where A Sequel To The Forever Purge Could Go

If producer Jason Blum has his way, The Purge franchise creator/writer James DeMonaco will be going back on his word about The Forever Purge being the final installment. Blum would love to keep the series going, and if fans keep showing up, who could blame them? That said, DeMonaco is key to keeping The Purge in circulation, and he’s got two options he can easily use to do so.

Option one is a sequel to The Forever Purge that picks up during America’s brand new civil war. As Ever After Purgers and those that would defeat them are currently engaged in battle, that seems like the first and most logical step in following the fifth Purge film in the series. However, there’s one more option that could stand to expand the scope of this franchise even more.

Option two for The Forever Purge’s sequel is a scenario that sees a World War breaking out. With the Ever After Purgers overthrowing the New Founding Fathers of America, and potentially securing the military resources of the entire country, a new nation of fascists would seem to be on the rise. Should America fall under the total control of this insidious force, it may be time for the world to intervene and defeat whatever new nation is born out of the chaos.

There are no guarantees that The Forever Purge will in fact spawn another sequel in The Purge series. Readers, it’s time to Purge once more, as The Forever Purge brings the series that saw an alternate America legalize all crime for one night back to theaters. The supposedly final chapter in Blumhouse’s hit franchise, The Purge movies kind of have the same issue that the Fast and Furious movies do. When it comes to watching the films in order, it’s not a totally straightforward enterprise to know what order to watch them in.

Of course, if you’re going to make your way through the history of the New Founding Fathers of America and the holiday they created, you have two options. You can either watch the films in the order they were released, or you can watch The Purge unfold in chronological order. No matter which way you decide to enjoy the franchise, we’re about to hand you the guide that’ll lay it all out on the line. Let’s start with how most of the world enjoyed their first Purge experience: in order of release date.

The Purge Movies By Release Date Order

With The Purge becoming an unexpected hit in 2013, another Blumhouse success story was born. From that point, four theatrical sequels were produced, running up to this summer’s debut of The Forever Purge. So if you want to watch the series as it was released, here’s the order you should use:

Of course, hindsight is 20/20; and The Forever Purge is a theatrical release. So if you want to be sure you’re caught up before you head out to a theater near you, you’re going to want to watch the movies in chronological order. In which case, this next list is for you.

The Purge Movies, In Chronological Story Order

The thing about the Purge movies is that most of them involve different stories and characters than the others, which means it's mainly the world in which the films are set that remains the same. With almost a decade of Purge movies, and roughly double that many years covered in the history presented in the franchise, chronological story order is key. If you want to get a straight and narrow telling of how the annual Purge got off the ground, you’re going to have to start at the beginning. Luckily enough, the first movie in The Purge series is easy enough to spot.

The First Purge

Kicking off the story of The Purge franchise in the year 2017, The First Purge shows us the first execution of the “NFFA Social Experiment.” Taking place over the usual 12 hour period, but limited to Staten Island, the night that led to The Purge and all of its sequels is on full display. The rules are a bit different, but the ruthless heart of this dark satirical thriller is still there. Not to mention, the true history of Purge Night’s dark origins are revealed, with the consequences set to reverberate over the course of nearly two decades.

The Purge

Moving into the future of the franchise, The Purge brings us to the fifth annual Purge in 2022. Purge Night is now a nationally established tradition, with the New Founding Fathers of America being able to claim low unemployment and no crime rate, thanks to one night where America releases the beast. The Purge is also notable for introducing us to “The Bloody Stranger” (Edwin Hodge), a man who would eventually serve a greater purpose in this reborn nation. And it won't take long to see the results, as this stranger reappears in the next film in line.

The Purge: Anarchy

One year after The Purge, another Purge Night is up and running in The Purge: Anarchy. The mythos of this alternate America grows with the sixth annual Purge, and 2023 introduces the anti-Purge movement that’s grown in the year. Key characters that are introduced in the third Purge film are would-be purger Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) and Carmelo Johns (Michael K. Williams,) the leader of the anti-Purge resistance. Also returning is Dante Bishop, still known as “The Stranger,” another player in the forces that are trying to derail the NFFA’s power structure.

The Purge: Election Year

Brace yourselves, because The Purge series jumps pretty far ahead into the future. The Purge: Election Year zooms to the year 2040, as Leo Barnes is now a Secret Service agent protecting presidential hopeful Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell). For the first time, the Purge Night restriction that kept politicians of a certain level of status safe has been revoked, leaving Senator Roan and Leo to survive the night. Lucky for them, Dante Bishop and Carmelo Johns are still in play; with Johns only being mentioned in this installment.

The Forever Purge

Originally, The Forever Purge was meant to be the final brick in the wall of this franchise. Set in the aftermath of The Purge: Election Year, the year 2041 sees an America where the Purge has supposedly been rejected by the government. Of course, there’s a chance that it’s been reinstituted, or at least that seems to be the goal of the new batch of crazies that want to make sure America lives up to the film’s title. These cowpokes want to Purge forever, and they’ll do anything they can to make sure they have the right.

Should The Purge continue after The Forever Purge’s release, there will probably be a bunch of new history to learn, and more pieces involved in this crazy game. Through almost a decade of The Purge movies existing in the pop culture landscape, the concept of Purge Night has expanded with each installment. It’s all led to the last hurrah for the blockbuster Blumhouse franchise, as The Forever Purge is the final film in The Purge franchise. But before we head out for that final round of purging and purifying, it’s a good time to run through the rules and history of Purge Night. So secure your surroundings, pick out your favorite mask, and water your blue Baptisias, as we’re going to run through how the whole thing works, as revealed throughout the movies, and why it even exists in the first place.

How Was The Purge Invented, And By Whom?

The New Founding Fathers of America, partnered with Dr. May Updale (Marisa Tomei), created The Purge as a sort of release valve for the pressures felt by America. The NFFA meant to use The Purge’s central holiday for two reasons. On its face, people participate in The Purge as an outlet to release their anxieties and the pressure of a crumbling society.

However, as we saw in The First Purge, the New Founding Fathers of America really wanted to use this as a method of “depopulating the lower class,” and relieving the economic and societal burden on the more affluent voters that put them into power. But as time marched on, the structure and even some of the rules of The Purge are rescinded, or just outright broken. And eventually, the rich would start targeting their fellow rich people for shallow or sadistic reasons.

When Was The First Purge?

March 21, 2016, was the date of The First Purge; as it would have to at least predate the footage shown during The Purge’s opening credits by a year. After the New Founding Fathers of America saw their first presidential candidate elected into office, a pilot program was hatched and tested in Staten Island. What was once called “The NFFA Social Experiment” became the national phenomenon known as The Purge, and after its first night of testing, the results were promising enough for a nationwide expansion.

Of course, seeing as the NFFA hired roving bands of mercenaries to stoke the fires, as well as flooded the streets with weapons, the validity of those results could be severely called into question. The truth doesn’t matter though, as by the time The First Purge concludes, the New Founding Fathers of America had the PR tools they needed to legalize The Purge on a national level. America was about to become a nation reborn, as the ratification of the 28th Amendment would secure a new tradition.

When Does Purge Night Happen?

If you want to mark down the night to stay inside and lock the doors, March 21st into March 22nd is the night of the Annual Purge. The bad news is, even if you want to stay inside and barricade your house like the Sandin family did in The Purge, that’s not a guarantee. The good news is, the annual Purge is only allowed during a specified window of time.

A 12-hour window, between 7 PM and 7 AM is given to all who want to purge and purify their little corner of the United States of America. During this window, all emergency services are suspended, so if something catches on fire, or if you’re injured, the typical infrastructure you depend on for assistance is not available. Though, as we saw in The Purge: Election Year, there are some amateur ambulance crews that rove the streets to help those in need.

What Crimes Are Allowed On Purge Night?

What type of crime are you really interested in? On Purge Night, the commencement address that kicks things off says it all, as it stipulates that “all crime, including murder, is legal.” So if you want to rob an ATM, do your drug of choice, or the garden variety favorite of murder, it’s all on the table in the alternate version of the United States.

Just make sure you keep it all in that 12 hour window, and try not to piss off friends, family, neighbors, and those close enough to you to hold a grudge. You never know what the year in-between Purges will inspire, like that time The Purge saw the Sandin family targeted by their jealous neighbors. Surprisingly enough, there are some restrictions on the typical Purge Night plans.

What’s Not Allowed On Purge Night?

There’s still some regulations that are present during Purge Night, so don’t think that anything goes. Up until 2040’s annual Purge in The Purge: Election Year, “government officials of ranking 10” were protected from The Purge. Though the NFFA, in their bid to eliminate their popular opponent Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), removed that little caveat. Though it’s a safe bet that even if you tried to assassinate the sitting NFFA president that night, you’d probably be punished.

Also, “weapons of class 4 and lower” are cleared for usage on Purge Night. Only Class 5 weapons are outlawed, and seeing as those include explosives, and presumably any other weapon of mass destruction, the carnage can be kept nice and personal. Though, back in The First Purge, explosives and incendiary devices weren’t as taboo as they would eventually become. By the way, if you break any of the rules of Purge Night, the penalty is death by hanging.

Why Do People Participate In Purge Night?

If you ask someone holding the party line for the New Founding Fathers of America, Purge Night is supposed to be a spiritual and sociological cleansing. Theoretically, one night of unbridled violence and lawlessness is supposed to contain the country’s destructive tendencies. By the time the annual Purge is over, the catharsis is supposed to relieve the nation of its fears, and the economy usually sees a bit of a boost because of all the Purge prep. Apparently, you don’t get to 0% unemployment merely through creating jobs.

Though we’ve seen more personal reasons override the altruistic claims the NFFA likes to throw into the wind. The Purge: Anarchy saw Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) looking to get revenge in the name of family tragedy; and in The Purge: Election Year, the concept of “murder tourists” was introduced. Some people Purge because they’ve got an axe to grind, while others will travel to simply do it because they can.

What’s Going On With The Forever Purge?

While we’re not going to spoil the adventures that await in The Forever Purge, the film’s basic concept is the somewhat logical endpoint of this long standing American tradition. After The Purge: Election Year saw the holiday cancelled by President-Elect Charlie Roan, the New Founding Fathers of America’s supporters rioted. Now, in the fifth and final installment of The Purge series, it looks like those who believe in the cause are going to Purge, whether it’s legal or not; and the action won’t be limited to a 12 hour window.

And that is all you need to know about Purge Night! A dark satire aimed squarely at the fears of our modern society, all hell looks like it’s about to break loose with The Forever Purge’s addition to the mythos. Is The Forever Purge going to be the last movie in the Purge franchise? There certainly have been reasons to think that it might be. In 2018, following the release of The First Purge, writer James DeMonaco said in an interview that he had an idea for a film that would be a “really cool ending” for the series, and ever since then there has been speculation about whether or not the upcoming fourth sequel would actually be that capstone story.

Now the movie is about to actually come out, but unfortunately the answer to the big question remains as unclear as ever. This is because while James DeMonaco might still be thinking of The Forever Purge as the franchise finale, producer Jason Blum isn’t yet ready to say goodbye to the popular horror brand.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Jason Blum earlier this month during The Forever Purge’s recent virtual press day, and my very first question to the filmmaker was about the movie’s status as a potential finale. Blum acknowledged that comments previously made by James DeMonaco, who is credited as the creator of the franchise, and made it very clear that he doesn’t have any interest in making a Purge movie without him – but at the same time he made it very clear that he is not ready to see these films end their run just yet. Said Blum,

Unlike The First Purge, which was a prequel set before the events of the original 2013 film, The Forever Purge is a direct sequel to The Purge: Election Year that jumps ahead in the franchise timeline and sees the fascistic New Founding Fathers Of America reclaim power and reinstate the annual 12-hour horror show the series is named after. The big catch this time, however, is that those who very much enjoy the purging process decide that they don’t want to just limit themselves to a single half-day of chaos anymore, and a movement begins nationwide that sees lawlessness and violence continue even after the Purge is officially declared over.

The Forever Purge is the darkest chapter in the series yet, and while it’s ending does keep the door open for more stories to be told (I won’t get any more spoiler-y than that), Jason Blum does respect why James DeMonaco wants to step away. The producer is very proud of the success that the series has had, though, and doesn’t quite want to let it go:

As recognized by Jason Blum, one strong argument to keep the movies coming is that, when you consider worldwide box office totals, each installment has been more popular and more successful than the last. The Purge made $89.3 million globally when it came out eight years ago, and each of its sequels – The Purge: Anarchy ($111.9 million), The Purge: Election Year ($118.6 million), and The First Purge ($137.1 million) – has made more than its predecessor. When that kind of clear demand exists, why stop?

This then leads to another important question: given the track record, what would define success and worthiness of a sequel for The Forever Purge? The answer is obviously complicated (made more so due to the fact that theaters are still recovering post-2020), but Jason Blum took a crack at explaining it:

Directed by Everardo Gout, and starring Ana de la Reguera, Tenoch Huerta, Josh Lucas, and Will Patton, The Forever Purge arrives in theaters this Friday – just in time for the July 4th holiday – and we’ll keep you updated here on CinemaBlend regarding the potential future for a Purge 6.

Following the record-breaking success of 2018’s The First Purge, which became the highest-grossing film in the notorious horror series, Blumhouse Productions and Platinum Dunes returns with a terrifying new chapter written by franchise creator and narrative mastermind James DeMonaco. The Forever Purge is the fifth installment in The Purge franchise, and features Ana de la Reguera, Tenoch Huerta, Josh Lucas, Cassidy Freeman, Leven Rambin, Alejandro Edda, and Will Patton.

De la Reguera and Huerta play Adela and Juan, a Mexican couple who escapes from a drug cartel and ends up stranded on a Texas ranch. There, they're at the mercy of the group of outsiders who plan to unlawfully continue the Purge. The Forever Purge, directed by Everardo Gout, was delayed from its original release date due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but is finally going to release in theaters this Friday, July 2. Critics have started releasing their reviews of the film, so let’s check them out.

Our very own Eric Eisenberg rated the horror film a 3.5 out of 5 stars, calling it one of the best Purge movies yet. He enjoyed how The Forever Purge changes things up story-wise, focusing primarily on the time period after the 12-hour purge, when things turn into, well, a forever purge. Though he admits that some of the scares start out a little rocky in the beginning, it quickly dials up the intensity. Eisenberg said:

Jude Dry of IndieWire commended the performances of Huerta and de la Reguera, noting that they carry the film. She applauded the kills in the film, noting that they don’t feel gratuitous, but she does admit that this horror movie is a little light on the horror. Dry also appreciated the motivations of the movie to “reach across the aisle,” saying:

William Bibbiani from The Wrap also touched on the social justice aspects of the movie, and of the Purge franchise in general. Though he points out that The Forever Purge, “an action thriller with a political undercurrent,” gets kind of rocky in the details, the cinematography is striking and captures the symbolism of the franchise. Bibbiani said:

Joshua Rivera from Polygon commented on the social commentary of the dystopian action flick, but he thought The Forever Purge missed the mark. Rivera argued that the execution is frustrating, noting that the Mexican immigrants are the protagonists, but the rich white family somehow gets the character arcs. He wrote:

Chris Evangelista of SlashFilm also commented on what the horror film could have been, noting that The Forever Purge points out the similarities between the movie world and our own, but offers no real commentary on the matter. Though he did applaud Ana de la Reguera’s stand-out performance, he was overall disappointed, noting that the carnage eventually became boring. Evangelista said:

Well, it would seem that critics have pretty mixed opinions of The Forever Purge. You'll soon be able to form your own opinion, though, when the horror movie opens in theaters this Friday, July 2.

The Purge (2013)

In 2022 (dang, that’s close), salesman James Sandin (Ethan Hawke) is confident he, his wife, Mary (Game of Thrones cast member Lena Headey), and two children, Zoey (Adelaide Kane) and Charlie (Max Burkholder), will be safe from tonight’s federally instituted, 12-hour period of lawlessness with the home security system he has, unsurprisingly, made a fortune off of. However, soon after the chaos commences, Charlie allows a desperate stranger (Edwin Hodge, older brother of Aldis) into their home and the family becomes targeted by a group of malicious, yet cunningly polite, masked invaders.

Writer and director James DeMonaco unleashed his vision of a violence-obsessed country with this first installment that proved to be yet another big hit for Blumhouse. A politically-driven reinvention of the home invasion thriller subgenre, The Purge - streaming now on Peacock - was only a small glimpse of the anarchy the franchise had in store.

The Purge: Anarchy (2014)

In 2023, a grieving police sergeant (Frank Grillo) intends to take advantage of tonight’s 12-hour period of lawlessness by seeking revenge on the man who killed his son. However, soon after the chaos commences, he takes on the responsibility of guiding a waitress (Carmen Ejogo), her daughter (Zoë Soul), and a soon-to-be divorced couple (Zach Gilford and Kiele Sanchez) to safety after they are randomly selected as targets by the sociopaths wreaking governmentally accepted havoc.

While 2013’s The Purge provided audiences with a small window of the annual night’s horrifying circumstances from the perspective of one family forced into seclusion, this indirect sequel puts you right in the middle of the action, from the perspective of people desperately seeking refuge. Released just one year after its predecessor, The Purge: Anarchy - streaming on Peacock as well - also proved Frank Grillo’s worth as leading man soon after the Marvel movies showed his worth as a villain.

The Purge: Election Year (2016)

Former police sergeant Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) now is the head of security for presidential candidate Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell) who believes said 12-hour period of lawlessness does more harm than good. Soon after the chaos commences, Barnes’ job to protect Roan becomes a more urgent matter when a betrayal leaves them stranded on the streets of D.C. where citizens are exercising their right to go mad.

After depicting the horrors of the Purge in its purest and most graphic form in The Purge Anarchy, James DeMonaco ups the ante with what was the franchise’s most overtly political installment yet. Released during a real and highly polarizing election year (which I doubt was by accident), The Purge: Election Year is not available on subscription streaming platforms, but can be rented on VOD - could have been a perfectly satisfying conclusion to the carnage but, just like in real life, the chaos never really ends.

The First Purge (2018)

In the alarmingly not-too-distant future, a recently developed political party called the New Founding Fathers of America comes up with an idea they believe could help rid the world of financial upheaval and violent unrest. They decide to conduct an experiment by turning Staten Island into a completely lawless state for 12-hours and offer a $5,000 reward to anyone brave enough to participate.

Having seemingly completed his vision in a trilogy that concluded with The Purge: Election Year, James DeMonaco returned to pen a fourth film that explains how and why America decided to succumb to its violent tendencies (and give its love of twisted cosplay a shot). Gerard McMurray, a producer for Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale Station, takes over as the director of The First Purge - a prequel that effectively builds on the franchises’ penchant for exposing the ills of society through means of graphic exploitation and is also only available to stream through digital rental.

The Purge (The Series) (2018-2019)

The world has grown accustomed to the annual tradition of allowing the American people the freedom to commit whatever crime they want once each year. This year, a group of disparate, unrelated people endure the horrors of the 12-hour period in their own ways, whether that means to avoid becoming the prey or become a predator.

In the same year in which The First Purge was released, creator James DeMonaco continued to expand on the anarchic world he created with this TV series spin-off of the Purge movies, which lasted two seasons on USA. While the film franchise focuses more prominently on the violence that inevitably ensues on Purge night, the show - which is streaming on Hulu or available on Peacock for premium subscribers - draws attention to other common restrictions people might be tempted to take advantage of, such as theft, to name one.

Warning: SPOILERS for the Star Wars: The Bad Batch episode “Battle Scars” are ahead!

Star Wars: The Bad Batch has featured quite a few familiar faces from the Star Wars universe during its run so far. In the last few weeks alone, we briefly reunited with Jabba the Hutt’s majordomo Bib Fortuna in “Rampage,” while “Decommissioned” brought back sisters Trace and Rafa Martez following their introduction in The Clone Wars Season 7. And speaking of that series, this week’s Bad Batch episode, “Battle Scars,” brought fellow clone Captain Rex, one of the The Clone Wars’ primary characters, back into the picture to help Hunter, Wrecker, Tech and Echo with getting rid of their Order 66 programming.

After completing another mission for Cid at the start of “Battle Scars,” the Bad Batch were surprised to see Rex at the Trandoshan’s establishment. It turns out that Rex was the mysterious individual who Trace and Rafa contacted at the end of “Decommissioned,” and while Rex was initially glad to reunite with some of his fellow clones who hadn’t succumbed to their inhibitor chips, he immediately became cautious upon learning that they still had the chips in their heads. Having seen firsthand how the inhibitor chips can overwrite a clone’s personality and force them to carry out Order 66, Rex recommended that the Batch remove the chips from their bodies as soon as possible.

Agreeing to Rex’s recommendation, the Bad Batch traveled to Bracca, a starship graveyard planet, to find a Venator-class Star Destroyer to find the proper medical bay to remove their inhibitor chips the same way Rex had his removed by Ahsoka Tano. It was a journey fraught with peril, from avoiding Scrapper Guild patrols to Wrecker nearly being killed by some tentacled monstrosity, but eventually they reached their destination, and Wrecker was the first to undergo the procedure. A wise decision, as weeks after hitting his head and suffering recurring headaches, “Decommissioned” showed Wrecker unconsciously muttering “Good soldiers follow orders” before waking up.

However, right before the procedure began, Wrecker’s agitation resulted in his Order 66 programming fully activating, and he subsequently attacked his teammates and Omega. If it wasn’t for a well-timed stun blast from Rex, Wrecker would have killed the young female clone, but thankfully that didn’t happen. “Battle Scars” ended with Wrecker, Hunter, Tech and Echo finally being freed from their chips, and Rex bid the squad adieu to the squad to continue his heroic journey (we know where he ultimately ends up thanks to Star Wars Rebels) while they still figure out their place in the universe. Unfortunately, the Batch’s location has now been passed along to the Empire after they were spotted by the Scrapper Guild, but that’s a story for next week.

Unfortunately, there’s still one member of the original Bad Batch whose inhibitor chip is still intact. Unlike the squad’s other members, Crosshair was partially affected by Order 66 when it was activated by Palpatine, resulting in him nearly killing Caleb Dume, a.k.a. the future Kanan Jarrus. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Admiral Tarkin had Crosshair’s chip enhanced, so now he’s carrying out the will of the Empire and has no problem with capturing or killing his former teammates. Whether Crosshair’s Order 66 programming will eventually be wiped away or if he’s permanently on Team Empire remains to be seen, but at least the Batch knows there’s a way to remove his chip should they find a way to subdue him when their paths cross again.

The eighth season of Chicago P.D. is coming to an end, and the finale promises to be an intense and "dirty" hour of television. Burgess was kidnapped in the final moments of the penultimate episode by some people who already proved willing to kill, and it remains to be seen whether her friends and fellow officers in Intelligence will be able to save her. Plus, the relationship with Upton and Halstead hit some rough waters not too long ago, so there are big questions heading into the finale. Luckily, showrunner Rick Eid delivered some answers.

The Season 8 finale of Chicago P.D., called "The Other Side," will see Voight and Intelligence fighting to take down a deadly crime ring and save Burgess in the process. It directly follows an episode where Intelligence was unable to stop that crime ring due to Samantha Miller's insistence on doing everything according to protocol, with deadly but by-the-book results. The cops of Intelligence were willing to follow Miller's direction when it was her son who was missing, but will those same rules apply now that Burgess is the one who has been taken? Showrunner Rick Eid weighed in:

The cops of Intelligence were able to follow the rules when it was Darrell Miller's life on the line, even if they (with the exception of Atwater) weren't thrilled about it. With Burgess in the hands of a crime ring that has already killed more than one person, it's easy to see why all bets could be off for at least some of them. LaRoyce Hawkins previously shared with CinemaBlend that Atwater still feels strongly about embracing reform, even after the tragic death of Darrell, so it's probably safe to say that he'll be one of those inclined to play it by the book.

If that leads to conflict with Ruzek... well, it wouldn't be the first time in Season 8. In fact, the various members of the Intelligence team have had opposing viewpoints on multiple fronts in Season 8, for better or worse. Rick Eid continued on the subject of how far they would go to save Burgess in the Season 8 finale:

There can be no doubt that Ruzek and Atwater both love Burgess, and there's no way the others could work with her for so long and go through so much with her without having strong feelings about getting her back safely. Even Upton, for all that she and Burgess don't have the closest relationship within the unit. Besides, after everything Burgess has gone through after the past two seasons, she of all people could probably use a break. As for whether or not Burgess has a breaking point, Rick Eid explained:

Burgess has survived some of the worst personal tragedies of any Chicago P.D. character over the past couple of seasons, but that doesn't mean that she's going to break in her circumstances in the Season 8 finale. The fact that the show recently went out of the way to make sure that young Makayla will still have a guardian even if the worst should happen to Burgess makes it hard not to worry about her fate by the end of the finale, but as Rick Eid said, she is strong and tough.

As for what's up with Upton and Halstead by this point in Season 8, their relationship ran into a rough patch not too long ago when Voight's influence on Upton started to cause some problems. Upton may not be breaking bad in Season 8 as much as she was in Season 7 when she got herself sent over to FBI on CBS, but she is far from the straight and narrow, which put her in conflict with Halstead at work. Rick Eid previewed how much of a factor Voight is in their relationship after his conversation with Upton:

Assuming Voight is still around by the end of the Season 8 finale and Upstead are still in a relationship, this particular issue might still be hanging over them heading into Season 9, but we can only speculate at this point. The good news is that whatever happens in the Season 8 finale, Chicago P.D. has already been renewed for Season 9 (and Season 10), so there is no need to worry that P.D. won't be able to continue telling all of these stories in the fall.

The Season 8 finale of Chicago P.D. airs on Wednesday, May 26 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC, following the Season 9 finale of Chicago Fire at 9 p.m. and the Season 6 finale of Chicago Med (which will say goodbye to two original cast members) at 8 p.m. ET. The Dick Wolf universe is still getting bigger as well, with another Law & Order series on the way to NBC and a second FBI spinoff coming to CBS.

The Purge franchise is recognized first and foremost as part of the horror genre, but what’s impossible not to pick up on in the story is the social commentary regarding class warfare. As the films have continued to come out, each one has added new layers to the world, and in doing so have provided new perspectives and angles for the subtext. This is definitely not going to be a tradition from which the upcoming The Forever Purge deviates, with the film unfolding a story at the United States’ southern border, but the director is also promising that the latest chapter of the series is going to be the most authentic and visceral that we’ve seen.

Timed to the rollout of the first trailer this morning, I had the pleasure of interviewing The Forever Purge director Everardo Gout this past weekend about his work on the upcoming sequel, and it was while discussing his collaboration with screenwriter/producer/franchise creator James DeMonaco that he talked about his specific approach to the material. He explained that there was a feel he was going for with the movie, and that required going the extra mile in terms of research and demanding authenticity. Said the filmmaker,

Unlike its three predecessors, the majority of The Forever Purge won’t take place during the annual 12-hour event when all crime is legal, but instead is set directly in the aftermath. While the ensemble of characters believe that they are safe once the legally chaotic and violent period comes to an end, they are unfortunately disillusioned of that notion by a group of masked terrorists who refuse to let the Purge end. Being set near the United States-Mexico border, the story has its own political implications and clearly Everardo Gout was excited to dig into that material.

What the filmmaker also recognized, however, was that he had a great resource available to him called “James DeMonaco’s brain.” DeMonaco created the Purge franchise, writing and directing The Purge, The Purge: Anarchy, and The Purge: Election Year, and he wrote the screenplay for The First Purge in addition to creating the two season-long Purge television series. He is the true grandmaster of everything related to the series, and Everardo Gout clearly enjoyed his time working with him, saying,

It was just a little less than eight years ago that writer/director James DeMonaco introduced us to The Purge – a cinematic alternate reality where the United States is taken over by a new political party that mandates an annual 12-hour period when all crime is legal. That film turned out to be a big surprise hit, and we've taken a long journey with the movies since, going through Anarchy, Election Year, a prequel exploration of The First Purge, and even a television show. Now the franchise is set to make a return to the big screen, and it will do so with The Forever Purge launching this summer.

Following the film's pandemic related delays, the first trailer for The Forever Purge is now online, and it gives us not only a glimpse at a very different story set to unfold, but also a considerable number of shocking visuals. Like the case with The First Purge, James DeMonaco has written the screenplay for the film, and taking over director duties for the series is Everardo Gout, who is best known for his small screen work on series including National Geographic's Mars, Luke Cage, Snowpiercer, and The Terror.

While all four of the previous movies in the franchise have been primarily set during the terrifying 12-hour stretch when murder, rape, arson, assault and more are legal, The Forever Purge quickly establishes in its trailer that it is putting a new spin on things by starting its story in the wake of a Purge. In the movie, the central characters living close to the southern border of the United States find themselves terrorized by a group of marauders who have no interest in seeing the half-day of zero consequences come to an end (hence the title). It's not specifically made clear when the film is set in relation to its predecessors, but considering that The Purge is brought to an end in the closing minutes of The Purge: Election Night, with Elizabeth Mitchell's Charlie Roan becoming president, it seems fair to assume that this new plot will be set either immediately after that final event, or at a different point on the timeline completely. The ensemble cast includes Ana de la Reguera, Tenoch Huerta, Josh Lucas, Cassidy Freeman, Leven Rambin, Alejandro Edda and Will Patton.

As has been the case for the last two titles in the series as well, The Forever Purge will be coming out tied to the most patriotic of all holidays: Independence Day. With the big day for fireworks and picnics on a Sunday this year, the brand new release will be available for your eyes and ears on July 2. In 2018, Blumhouse took us back to the early days of The Purge with The First Purge, a prequel that depicted the origins of the annual lawless evening and how an experiment in Staten Island resulted in the most ruthless and deadly night of the year. While the horror movie received a mixed reception from critics and audiences alike, it didn't have any trouble scaring up an audience. To date, it remains the highest-grossing installment in the franchise, grossing nearly $140 million worldwide. It's certainly not the last we'll see of The Purge, as The Forever Purge is slated to come out on July 9, 2021.

Y’lan Noel (Dmitri Cimber)

As Dmitri Cimber, a drug lord in Staten Island and Nya's ex-boyfriend, Y'lan Noel was the protagonist in The First Purge. Most notably, Noel played Daniel King in HBO's Insecure. He also had a main role in The Hustle. Away from TV, Noel appeared in Slice, House of Another, The Weekend, and last year's The Photograph. The actor also acted in the short film, The Spartan King. Currently, Noel is shooting Mo McRae's feature directorial debut, A Lot of Nothing. Additionally, he's signed on to lead Lee Daniels' newest show.

Lex Scott Davis (Nya Charms)

In the role of Nya Charms, an anti-Purge activist, Lex Scott Davis plays a main character in The First Purge. Previously, Davis played Toni Braxton in Lifetime's biopic, Toni Braxton: Unbreak My Heart. The actress also had a starring role in CBS's short-lived series, Training Day. Additionally, Davis played a recurring role as Quiara Thompson in Showtime's The L Word: Generation Q. Her other television credits include All Rise, The Exes, and Tales. Away from television, Davis can be seen in Superfly (2018) and Foster Boy. Additionally, she co-wrote and starred in 2014's short film, ColorBlind.

Most recently, Lex Scott Davis was seen in Son of the South. The actress also played the title role of Joy in Joy & Jim and appeared in the short film, Magnolia Bloom. Currently, Davis plays the part of Cassidy "Cass" Ray in ABC's Rebel. Currently, she's filming a role in Mo McRae's feature screenwriting and directorial debut, A Lot of Nothing. Additionally, Davis will be seen in Sweet Girl later this year.

Joivan Wade (Isaiah Charms)

Playing the part of Isaiah Charms, a high school student who lives with his older sister, Nya, Joivan Wade is one of the main characters in The First Purge. Most notably, Wade is known for his performances as Manyou in BBC's Big School and Jordan Johnson in BBC's EastEnders. His other TV credits include Youngers, Doctor Who, Casualty, and The Interceptor. Away from television, Wade can be seen in The Weekend, The Dare, VS., and a series of short films, including 2012's Callum, 2015's Chick or Treat (which he co-wrote), 2016's Rwd/Fwd, 2017's The Riot Act, 2018's Shiro's Story (which he produced), and 2019's Amani (which he produced). Outside of acting, Wade produced the short film, Joy, last year.

Currently, Joivan Wade plays Victor Stone, i.e. Cyborg, in HBO Max's Doom Patrol. The third season is expected to premiere later this year. The actor also played the part in a recent episode of The CW's Legends of Tomorrow. Additionally, last year, Wade produced, wrote, and played a version of himself in the short film, Wade in the Water.

Marisa Tomei (Dr. May Updale/The Architect)

As Dr. May Updale, i.e. The Architect, the psychologist who created a social experiment that would later become the annual Purge, Marisa Tomei played a pivotal supporting character in The First Purge. Most famously, Tomei is an Oscar-winning actress for her supporting turn in My Cousin Vinny. The actress also received acclaim for playing Cassidy in The Wrestler, Gina Hanson in Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, Rita Abromowitz in Slums of Beverly Hills, and Natalie Strout in In the Bedroom. Additionally, the actress plays May Parker, a.k.a. Aunt May, in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, as well as Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame. Her other notable film credits include What Women Want, Anger Management, Wild Hogs, Cyrus, The Big Short, Crazy Stupid Love, and The Ides of March.

Most recently, Marisa Tomei appeared in Human Capital, Judd Apatow's The King of Staten Island, and the Netflix special, Sarah Cooper: Everything's Fine. Next, Tomei reprises her role as Aunt May in Spider-Man: No Way Home. She'll also star in Delia's Gone.

Lauren Velez (Luisa)

In the role of Luisa, the Charms' neighbor, Lauren Velez played a supporting character in The First Purge. Most notably, Velez is known for her performance as Maria LaGuerta in Showtime's Dexter. Her other notable television credits include HBO's Oz, ABC's Ugly Betty, Fox's New York Undercover, and ABC's How to Get Away with Murder. The actress's other TV credits include South of Hell, Madam Secretary, Blue Bloods, and MacGyver.

Away from television, Lauren Velez played Elaine Santos in City Hall and Lisette Linares in I Like It Like That. She can also be seen in I Think I Do, Officer Downe, Prince of Central Park, and Shaft (2019). Additionally, Velez voiced Rio Morales in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. She also starred in and produced 2016's America Adrift. Last year, Velez was seen in Ana and Swallow. Next, the actress will appear in Rogue Hostage.

Rotimi Paul (Skeletor)

Playing the part of Skeletor, a sadistic criminal who'll kill anyone he wants for his own depraved pleasure or gain, Rotimi Paul was a menacing figure in The First Purge. The actor can also be seen as Ken Moody in Mapplethorpe and Schmitty in Dutch Kills, which he also produced. Additionally, Paul can be seen in a variety of short films, including 2014's Ship of Fools (which he also wrote and produced), 2015's The Reels. 2016's New York I Love You, and 2019's Brooklyn Park. Away from movies, Paul appeared in episodes of As the World Turns, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Sleepy Hollow, Bull, and Blue Bloods.

Last year, Rotimi Paul was seen in the short film, A Storybook Ending. Next, he'll be seen in another short film, How I Learned to Breathe Out Water.

Mo McRae (7 & 7)

As 7 & 7, a loyal friend of Dmitri, Mo McRae plays a dependable supporting character in The First Purge. Most notably, McRae had a recurring role as Tyler in FX's Sons of Anarchy. His other TV credits include Big Little Lies, Almost Family, Empire, Ray Donovan, and This Is Us. He can also be seen in Murder in the First, Pitch, The Defenders, Southland, ER, Cold Case, NYPD Blue, and The Shield. Additionally, McRae's film credits include Wild, The Butler, Gridiron Gang, All the Way, and Den of Thieves.

Currently, Mo McRae is making his feature screenwriting and directorial debut with the upcoming dramedy thriller, A Lot of Nothing. The actor also produces the film. Additionally, McRae directed an episode of CBS's All Rise. As an actor, McRae recently played a recurring role in ABC's Rebel. He also appeared in the historical drama, The 24th, last year. Next, the actor will star in MVP, which he also produced, and the short film, Rock a Bye Baby. Additionally, McRae produced Joy & Jim earlier this year.

Siya (Blaise)

In the role of Blaise, a loyal member of Dmitri's gang, Siya played a minor character in The First Purge. Prior to acting, Siya was a rapper with four mixtapes, including 2011's Elevator Music, 2015's Better Late Than Never and What Never Happened, and 2017's Commitment, and three albums, including 2016's SIYAvsSIYA, 2017's 383 - for Roosevelt, and 2018's Mad Energy, respectively. The musician also starred in Oxygen's reality TV series, Sisterhood of Hip Hop. Prior to her performance in The First Purge, Siya made her acting debut in Netflix's Deuces. The actress can also be seen in Street Dreams: Los Angeles.

Last year, Siya appeared in the horror film, No Escape. Currently, the actress is filming a role in Good Intentions. She's also expected to appear in Blind Currency.

Melonie Diaz (Juani)

Playing the part of Juani, Melonie Diaz had a minor role in The First Purge. Prior to this performance, the film-television actress was known for her standout supporting turns in A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints and Fruitvale Station. She also starred in Itty Bitty Titty Committee, American Son, Be Kind Rewind, Supporting Characters, and Ghost Team. Her other notable film credits include Lords of Dogtown, The Belko Experiment, Hamlet 2, Gringo, Feel the Noise, All About Nina, Nothing Like the Holidays, and Assassination of a High School President.

On television, Melonie Diaz had a main role in VH1/BET's The Breaks. Her other television credits include Nip/Tuck, CSI: Miami, Girls, Room 104, Elementary, Rizzoli & Isles, and Law & Order. Outside of acting, Diaz produced two short films, 2009's She's a Blur and 2015's Wedding Dress. Currently, the actress leads The CW's Charmed in the role of Mel Vera.

Steve Harris (Freddy)

As Freddy, the best friend of Taz and Sharpie, Steve Harris plays a supporting character in The First Purge. Most notably, Harris is known for his two-time Emmy-nominated performance as Eugene Young in ABC's The Practice. His other television credits include main roles in TNT's Legends and NBC's Awake. He can also be seen in Justified, The Crossing, Friday Night Lights, Heist, New York Undercover, and The Twilight Zone. Additionally, Harris can be heard in Kids' WB/Cartoon Network's The Batman. Away from television, the actor can be seen in Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Minority Report, Quarantine, The Rock, Bringing Down the House, Sugar Hill, and 12 Rounds. He also appeared in Burning Sands, Takers, The Skulls, George Wallace, and Chi-Raq. Outside of acting, Harris was also a co-producer on 2018's Revival.

Most recently, Steve Harris appeared in Fox's short-lived drama series, Filthy Rich. He was also a guest star in an episode of NBC's Chicago P.D. Next, Harris will be seen in Starz's Black Mafia Family. He's also attached to produce A Love to Die For.

This year, the annual (or, more accurately, biennial) Purge ceremonies were delayed. While we were initially set to receive our fifth (and supposedly final) installment in the Blumhouse horror series earlier this summer, The Forever Purge was one of several films pushed back to 2021. Though it's not surprising, the news still came as a disappointment for fans. Over the course of the past seven-plus years, the Purge films have built a loyal audience, resulting in one of the more consistently successful (at least, financially speaking) movie/show franchises of the past decade.

Though fans will have to wait to see how the filmmakers wrap up this dystopian American series, we can use this time to reflect back on the previous Purge movies and rank them from worst to best. Our opinions might not mirror yours, but here's what we think.

4. The First Purge (2018)

Prequels are tough. While they can be worthwhile ways to establish world-building and bring clarity to later installments, it's hard to keep the audience invested when they know the outcome. With The First Purge, it's intriguing to learn — from a political standpoint — how the first Purge was put into motion. Even though it eliminates some of the mystique, it also brings some interesting commentary on how the U.S. government can mistreat the poor and disenfranchised, particularly in larger cities like, in this case, Staten Island. But it's hard to ignore how listless this prequel is when you compare it to the past few installments. While it offers insight into the foundation of this annual crime-filled tradition, it ironically doesn't bring anything new to the table, resulting in an underwhelming and unorigina retread that comes with a predictable and therefore dull conclusion.

The First Purge is notable for being the only Purge chapter (to date) that's written but not directed by James DeMonaco – the creator of the franchise. In my opinion, this is a mistake. While his ideas laid down the groundwork for every installment in The Purge series, he's been a demonstrably better director than screenwriter. Typically, these films get bundled whenever their blunt, occasionally artless thematics get in the way of their entertainment value. That's sadly the case here, too. While the filmmakers offer key insight for the nationwide introduction of The Purge, the movie itself lacks the thrills and engagement that are more often found in the other installments. Like every Purge story, there's great potential in The First Purge. Unfortunately, this prequel is disappointingly squandered by lackluster ambitions, despite its strong cast and intriguing thoughtfulness. Also, the complete waste of Marisa Tomei's time and talents? Unforgivable.

3. The Purge (2013)

When examining this horror series as a whole, The Purge deserves credit for laying the foundations of the franchise. It establishes the rules, introduces us to the state of this alternative America, and it gives us an intriguingly focused, commendably economical (in terms of its low-budget approach) gateway into this broad-reaching futuristic dystopian premise. Unfortunately, there isn't much that The Purge does better than the sequels that followed. The writing is clunky, which is an unfortunately common problem in every Purge movie, and the direction isn't as confident as what's featured in the follow-ups. Additionally, the considerably wealthy family we follow in this introductory film isn't the most relatable, likable, or endearing batch of protagonists. Their closed off, bunkered down perspective also isn't especially engaging or illuminating for what our country would look like if the Purge ravaged the land for one lawless night.

With all that said, Ethan Hawke's patriarchal performance does go a long way here. Especially in an expanding franchise where the acting isn't always the greatest asset, minus some notable exceptions (and we'll talk about more in a bit), Hawke's grounded investment and dramatic gravitas helps to sell the urgency of this concept-heavy premise —particularly in a low-budget horror-thriller that's expansive conceptually but limited in its filmmaking. Plus, there's something admirable about the simplicity of its home invasion-style narrative. While it's not especially noteworthy in terms of filmmaking, in this ever-growing canon it does a solid job of building a sense of danger and dread about the dangerous, unknowable personalities lurking outside of our main characters' walls, doors, and windows. Additionally, Rhys Wakefield's toothy villainous performance is consistently menacing throughout. But as we've noted before, the concept itself is ultimately more enticing and promising than what we're given in this introductory movie.

2. The Purge: Anarchy (2014)

With an expanded budget and broader scope, The Purge: Anarchy took criticisms from the profitable (albeit not critically acclaimed) original movie to heart and allowed itself to explore its world and play with genre and tone. The results were a sequel that's stronger than its predecessor, benefited by a more robust story, more rewarding characters, more thrilling and suspenseful sequences, and, as an added bonus, a better sense of humor to boot. But what really makes The Purge: Anarchy stand out compared to the original is the addition of Frank Grillo as a flawed-but-investing action hero wrestling inside a nation indulging in its worst impulses. While Ethan Hawke did a lot of the heavy lifting in the previous Purge, Grillo's leading man presence brings a greater sense of purpose to the larger vision. His character's desire for redemption helps the franchise itself grow.

Additionally, while James DeMonaco's work as a screenwriter still leaves something to be desired, he has notably improved as a director — complete with a surprisingly pretty graceful transition into a bigger canvas with some striking visuals, more inspired costumes and masks, and an admirable handle on the action set pieces throughout this L.A.-based continuation. While certainly not flawless, much like our hard exterior lead character, there's a clear desire to expand and improve, and it's certainly an advancement. While Anarchy doesn't feel like the definitive Purge film, its sense of assurance and its room for experimentation makes it more noteworthy than other sequels that often settle into their grooves following their initial success. Anarchy is eager to use this higher-budget sequel as a launching pad for its loftier ambitions, particularly with its world/character-building and its expansion on the original's themes. Overall, this sequel was a step in the right direction.

1. The Purge: Election Year (2016)

As you'd expect from the title, The Purge: Election Year is the most explicitly political Purge story, which might've turned some viewers off. Though it can be ham-fisted in terms of its proclamations, this third installment in The Purge trilogy is easily the best. Taking the elements that worked in the previous film while also providing more of a sociopolitical punch, Election Year is a pointed and unabashedly critical sequel with arguably the strongest cast in the franchise, while also providing a conclusiveness to this story that will likely be undermined (in some fashion or another) by the next Purge movie. Nevertheless, Election Year is James DeMonaco at his most confident work as a screenwriter and director in the series, providing a number of memorable set pieces, striking imagery, engaging characters, and greater dramatic stakes.

It also helps that The Purge: Election Year is the most entertaining installment in The Purge canon. Balancing the horror and the action elements found in the first and second installments, respectively, this genre-mixing feels like a natural elevation for the franchise and it gives it a bit of a John Carpenter feel in the right moments. Certainly, Escape From New York was a big influence on this series — this one probably more so than any other Purge movie to date. Once again expanding on the themes found in all of these narratives, Election Year avoids any sense of ambiguity as far as what it's aiming to say, making it easily the most scathing, unrestrained Purge chapter — particularly in its critical view of the ruling class. While it's not without its own flaws, this is the best one yet.
