In its nearly two-decade existence, Adult Swim has given audiences plenty of notable shows ranging from Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Home Movies to Rick and Morty and The Boondocks. Another series that’s been a staple of the adult programming block is The Venture Bros., which has been serving fans with plenty of action and comedy for over a decade. Unfortunately, we may now be witnessing the end of an era, as Adult Swim has cancelled the long-running series. But there may still be some light left at the end of the tunnel.

Series creator and producer Jackson Publick confirmed on Twitter that Adult Swim has opted to cancel The Venture Bros. and that he and his team were informed of the decision a few months ago. While the show’s abrupt end is disappointing for Publick, he also took the time to thank the fans for their support over the years:

Unfortunately, it’s true: #VentureBros has been canceled. We got the highly disappointing news a few months ago, while we were writing what would have been season 8. We thank you, our amazing fans, for 17 years of your kind (and patient) attention. And, as always, We Love You.

The Venture Bros. centers on the adventures of the Venture family, which is comprised of eccentric scientist Thaddeus “Rusty” Venture and his well-meaning (but somewhat incompetent) sons, Hank and Dean. Rounding out the main cast are the family’s secret agent bodyguard Brock Samson and their archnemesis – and Venture’s apparent half-brother – the Monarch.

The series, which is essentially a parody of vintage sci-fi content and adventure shows like Jonny Quest, has received considerable praise since it first debuted in 2004. Many have made specific note of how it plays on male, nerd culture.

Up next: 7 Cool Things We Learned From The Rick And Morty Adult Swim Con Panel

Although fans are definitely reeling from the news, Adult Swim has released an encouraging message on social media, and it sounds like there may still be some hope for the future:

We also want more Venture Bros. and have been working with Jackson and Doc to find another way to continue the Venture Bros. story.

So it would seem that Adult Swim may have something in mind for The Venture Bros. moving forward, though its future may not be with the programming block. Some sources with intel have told trades like Variety that the show could migrate to HBO Max for new episodes. However, such a move is still said to be “far from being a reality.”

With Jackson Publick and his team having already started work on Season 8 and Adult Swim wanting to continue with the property, there is reason to believe that this won’t be the end. The fans’ passionate response to Venture Bros. cancellation could also help to move things along. We’ll just have to wait and see how things shake out for the dysfunctional and hilarious family of adventurers.

Up next: 10 Best Adult Swim Shows Ever, Ranked

As fun as that may be, July is typically one of the hotter months in the United States, so it's completely understandable there are folks setting aside time for streaming to spend some time out of that hot sun. After all, grilled hot dogs and hamburgers taste just as good on the couch, right?

Here's the good news: Hulu has plenty of great shows arriving in July that will make subscribers feel real cool during those hot summer nights. Interested? Well, if you're not hyped just yet, you may be after seeing all of the new, old, original, and revived programming that will arrive on the streaming service in the near future. Take a look at some of the July highlights!

Married At First Sight (Season 7) - 7/1

Lifetime's Married At First Sight is one of television's oddest premises in which strangers agree to be married after being paired by relationship experts. They go on a honeymoon, and remain married for eight weeks before deciding on their future together. Season 7 follows a set of Dallas couples, and things get wild between one couple pretty quick. We won't get into spoilers, but it's certainly one of the more entertaining seasons.

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia (Season 13) - 7/5

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia Season 13 had a lot of hype going in, as there was much reported on Glenn Howerton's future status with the series.
Ever since its launch in 2001, Adult Swim and its shows have been a creative force in late-night comedy programming. Adult Swim shows have been highly influential over the years and have garnered acclaim and awards for creativity and influence in ways people may not immediately be aware of. Alas, that's the casualty of being a programming block that airs great shows with titles Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell and Assy McGee.

There's no denying there have been some great Adult Swim shows over the years, but which among them rank among the best? Given the variety of original programming and humor of its audience, it's unlikely there will be universal consensus, but here are 10 of the best Adult Swim has given the world that deserve recognition as the pinnacle of programming.

10. Tim And Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!

A polarizing choice for some, to be sure, but Tim Heidecker and Eric Warheim's influence on modern comedy via Tim And Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! can't be denied. Since its premiere in 2007, advertisers and YouTubers alike have imitated the duo's odd brand of humor in addition to the unique editing the series became prolific for.

Tim And Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! also managed to wrangle a healthy amount of talented actors and comedians for its show, bringing everyone from Will Ferrell to Tommy Wiseau to late night on Adult Swim. It spawned a spinoff, Check It Out! With Dr. Steve Brule, and got its own feature, Tim And Eric's Billion Dollar Movie. The series officially said goodbye in 2010 (minus two specials in 2017), but Heidecker and Warheim's success in Hollywood continues today.

9. Harvey Birdman, Attorney At Law

Much like Space Ghost Coast To Coast, Harvey Birdman, Attorney At Law was an Adult Swim series that took classic Hanna-Barbera characters a generation grew up with, and parodied them to be the people an adult audience often expected them to be. As for Harvey Birdman, the hero-turned-lawyer was often tasked with defending these characters with whatever legal problems they faced.

The original run lasted from 2001 to 2007, although Harvey Birdman recently made a comeback with Harvey Birdman: Attorney General in 2018, and a spinoff Birdgirl was recently announced and ordered to series. With a legacy that's lasted that long and looking as though it's going to start back up yet again, it's no surprise this Adult Swim show made the list.

8. Home Movies

While Home Movies initially started life on UPN, it was cancelled after only five episodes and revived on Adult Swim and billed as its first original series in 2001. The tales of Brendon and his young friends resonated with audiences, as well as the more adult-oriented humor that was certainly more grounded than later Adult Swim shows. The series ended in 2004, but fans continue to celebrate it as one of the brand's cult classics.

The biggest justification for Home Movies on this list comes from who created it, Brendon Small and Loren Bouchard. Small went on to create the highly acclaimed and still-beloved Adult Swim series Metalocalypse, and Bouchard reunited with Home Movies voice actor H. Jon Benjamin for the Fox hit and Adult Swim-syndicated favorite Bob's Burgers. There's plenty to love about Home Movies beyond what their creators went onto afterward, of course, so be sure to check it out.

7. The Eric Andre Show

If ever there was an Adult Swim show that could be best described as a "fever dream," The Eric Andre Show is it. Eric Andre and Hannibal Buress' starred talk show parody went surreal right out the gate, often with unassuming celebrity guests that sometimes had no clue what they were getting into. This created awkward and hilarious humor that the series thrived on since its debut in 2012.

From "Legalize Ranch" to the "Let Me In" meme, The Eric Andre Show has solidified itself as one of the more popular Adult Swim shows amongst viewers. Season 5 is planned to happen, although a bulk of Season 4 aired in 2016, so there's no telling when the new season may arrive.

6. Aqua Teen Hunger Force

One of the surreal originals that put Adult Swim on the map, Aqua Teen Hunger Force likely needs no introduction to most fans of the programming block. The series started in 2002, and at the time of its cancellation in 2015, it was the longest running Adult Swim series. Who would've thought that a series that started from a Space Ghost Coast To Coast joke would have such legs?

Aqua Teen Hunger Force was another Adult Swim series to get a movie, and one of the few shows to have its characters live on in Adult Swim branding. Meatwad, Frylock, Master Shake and especially Carl have solidified their legacy as Adult Swim icons, and their misadventures will remain timeless mainly because of the series' premise. As a side note, the show's success is especially impressive given it abandoned the character's premise as crime fighters very early into the series.

5. Metalocalypse

Quick question, how many cartoons out there have spawned a respectable metal band with an album that's charted on the Billboard Top 200 list? Unless there's some obscure series we're unaware of, Metalocalypse is it, and Brendon Small's comedy series about a modern metal band was an instant hit among fans of the genre and many Adult Swim viewers both shocked and entertained by its overtly violent animation and irreverent humor.

The fictional band Dethklok was just as great as the series, and Small toured with other acclaimed metal acts Mastadon and High On Fire during the show's run. To this day, fans still frequently petition for its return, to the point that Adult Swim has actively trolled those hopefuls to the enjoyment of others. Fans can still binge the four seasons and special finale that aired between 2006 and 2013, but for now, that appears this series isn't coming back.

4. The Boondocks

Adult Swim has rarely balked at controversial subjects or topics in its other shows, but it wasn't until The Boondocks that it tackled big issues that weren't surreal. Aaron McGruder's The Boondocks already had a reputation as a socially conscious and controversial cartoon strip, and it didn't tone things down in the jump to television. In its run the series garnered criticism for, among other things, its frequent use of racial slurs and frequent political and social commentary.

The series also found critics in the form of Reverend Al Sharpton, Tyler Perry and the BET network for its various themes and parodies of individuals. Yet the Adult Swim series kept on, running four seasons between 2005 and 2014 and picking up a Peabody Award along the way. That's not something any other Adult Swim show can say (for now), which more than justifies its spot on this list.

<img id="Ma4VZNpbCPDucxUNbhoUqZ" name="" alt="The Venture Bros. The Venture Bros.

As previously mentioned, Aqua Teen Hunger Force was the longest running Adult Swim show at the time of its cancellation, but The Venture Bros. recently took its title. While that's certainly a bittersweet achievement, there are few shows that deserve the title more than Jackson Publick's riff on Johnny Quest that was sometimes subtle, and other times featured an actual drug-addict adult "Johnny" that looked shockingly similar.

There's so much to love about The Venture Bros., but perhaps the best is that the series has maintained an impressive level of continuity since its beginning in 2003 to the present day. The only real downside is that there's only been 7 seasons in that span, but rest assured, those 81 episodes to date are of the utmost quality, and make the large gap between seasons well worth it.

2. Robot Chicken

Very few shows can garner near universal acclaim in geek culture, yet Robot Chicken is one of those few shows that exists in that territory. That may be because it's notorious for its riffing on the best of geek pop culture, and has gained several Emmys since its beginning in 2005. The series has run seven seasons so far and has also done specials on Star Wars, DC Comics and The Walking Dead that were instant classics.

As an aside that casual fans may not know, Robot Chicken originated via a comic in the magazine ToyFare. Eventually a show was created, which several major shows passed on until Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane suggested Seth Green and crew pitch the show to Adult Swim. Suffice to say it was a match made in heaven, and Robot Chicken appears to have a home on Adult Swim for as long as it wants.

1. Rick and Morty

Rick and Morty may be the newest Adult Swim original on this list (it started in 2013), but there's little question that it isn't deserving of the top Adult Swim original ever. The series has garnered massive popularity in a relatively short amount of time thanks in no small part to the smart writing of creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, and their crew.

It may not have as many Emmys as Robot Chicken, but did the latter play a part in a massive PR disaster at McDonald's? It certainly did not, and while Rick and Morty still has a ways to go before being considered on the same level as The Simpsons, South Park, and Family Guy, it's certainly fast approaching that territory, and may ultimately become the show Adult Swim is most remembered for if, heaven forbid, it go away.

Adult Swim has had tons of shows over the years, and there's sure to be some folks upset about the exclusion of a show or two. Disgruntled readers can make their case for shows like Squidbillies, Loiter Squad and others in the comments, and also click around on CinemaBlend for more television analysis and the latest headlines in television and movies.

This poll is no longer available.

The Venture Bros. will be returning to television for Season 7 which is great news to fans who, by now, have practically grown up watching the series. Unfortunately, fans of the show will have grown some more by the time the upcoming season is complete, as a recent Adult Swim bump indicated the series will not air until Nov. 11, 2018! Here's how we know the date, and if fans can be sure whether or not this is the true day they'll see more of the series.

The date on which The Venture Bros. will return was announced by Adult Swim in the same fashion the programming block releases most information, with a bump. The bump, which was uploaded to Facebook via a fan on Friday, listed that there were only 422 days to go until Season 7 would premiere on the network. For those keeping tabs, Season 6 of the series concluded March 20th in 2016, which means by the time Season 7 airs, two years, seven months, and 22 days will have passed!

That's a long time to wait, albeit not a wait fans of The Venture Bros. aren't used to. In fact, the gap between Season 4 and Season 5 (which saw the episode count drop down to eight from the prior season's 16) is about the same as this most recent gap between seasons will be. This upcoming Season 7 has previously been stated to contain 10 episodes, which, while it's not the 13 episode order the series had in its beginning, it's certainly more than AS original Metalocalypse is currently getting.

With Season 8 already a guarantee with another 10 episodes on the way following this coming season, let's hope the writing staff is taking so long because they're actively writing that season as well so they can release it sooner than past seasons. Let's also hope that with the premiere date so far away the show will actually premiere on November 11th, since it's not as though Adult Swim bumps are infallible in their wisdom.

As for what Season 7 will hold for Dr. Venture, Hank, Dean, Brock and the rest of the colorful cast of The Venture Bros. remains to be seen. Season 6 featured "Rusty" inheriting his brother J.J.'s massive fortune and Brock Samson being reinstated as the boys' bodyguard. One big thing that happened in the switch is that the crew is now operating out of New York and not the Venture Compound, which was destroyed in a special episode leading up to Season 6. It's likely the series will pick up again in New York, although this is a cartoon and it's also entirely possible the compound could be rebuilt by the time things pick up again in The Venture Bros.

The Venture Bros. will apparently return November 11th, 2018. After graduating Boston University and earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism, he took a part-time job as a staff writer for CinemaBlend, and after six months was offered the opportunity to move to Los Angeles and take on a newly-created West Coast Editor position. Over a decade later, his title has changed, and his role on the site has continued to advance. In addition to conducting filmmaker interviews and contributing to the news and feature content of the site, Eric also oversees the Movie Reviews section, writes the the weekend box office report (published Sundays), and is the site's resident Stephen King expert. He has two King-related columns: Adapting Stephen King (chronicling the fully history of King's works adapted for film and television) and The King Beat (a weekly roundup of the biggest news in the world of Stephen King books, movies, TV, and more)

What He’s Into: When he isn’t excitedly waiting for the lights to go down in the movie theater, Eric can often be found with his nose in a book, and it’s a safe bet that it is something by Stephen King or a comic book omnibus (Marvel or DC – he doesn’t discriminate). He is a long-suffering fan of the New York Mets, still waiting for them to win a championship in his lifetime, and the highs and lows of the experience have driven him subtly mad over the last twenty-five years. An avid collector of physical media and prop replicas, his apartment is the equivalent of the seed vault for movies, television, and comics.

What He’s Excited About Right Now: Life is a perpetual countdown clock waiting for the next Stephen King book/movie/TV show, but Eric is stoked for the renaissance of original horror, thrilled by the Phase 5 and 6 slates of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and already sick of waiting for Dune: Part Two.
</dc:description>

But just because that animated series didn’t take off in live-action doesn’t mean that it’s impossible that others can’t – and there are actually a number of shows that could actually still work after a change in medium.

There are certainly many cartoons from television history that would not work for movies – either because of their stories or style – but we’ve looked back and collected a list of titles that actually could survive the transition (after being put in the proper filmmaking hands, of course). If DC Comics wants to get to this type of title before Marvel can launch 2099, there exists a perfect opportunity with the flashy series Batman Beyond. Centering on an older Bruce Wayne training his successor as Batman in a neon-fueled vision of Gotham City, a live-action translation of the show could be a terrific way to either eventually continue the legacy of Ben Affleck’s version of the Dark Knight a few years down the line, or possibly just reboot the franchise post-DC Cinematic Universe without having to do over all of the elements we’ve seen a number of times already.

Daria

Not only is Daria a show that would work supremely well in live-action, now really is the time to actually get it done. After all, there’s only so much time left that Aubrey Plaza has to convincingly play a high schooler. Even if that window closes, however, it’s still a project that a proper filmmaker could do a lot with. The animation style was never the most highlighted element of the MTV series, but what was celebrated was the show’s honest portrayal of high school life and its sardonic wit – both things that obviously can be easily translated through mediums. The series officially came to an end in 2002, but its content feels as fresh as ever, and it’s a property that could actually work quite well with physically real actors and sets.

The Venture Bros.

The Venture Bros. is a series that is very much rooted in the animated world - what with primarily being a comedic re-imagining of Jonny Quest, but it’s really the scope and scale of the story that would make it great fodder for adaptation into live-action. The show does a really fantastic job of turning the super scientist/supervillain relationship and turning it on its ear, and in an age of comic book movies it could feel tremendously refreshing – particularly in its treatment of the henchmen working for the aforementioned supervillains. I would hope that a film could find some way of letting Patrick Warburton take on the role of the indestructible Brock Sampson himself, but it could really be an amazing part for any comedic, buff actor.

Invader Zim

The angular artwork is certainly one of the greatest elements of Jhonen Vasquez’s series Invader Zim, but there is still a part of me that would love to see this world adapted for live action. There would certainly be a specific challenge that would come with making the strange character designs work, but this dark, weird bit of science-fiction could result in a disturbingly funny feature about an incompetent alien’s attempt to take over Earth, and the workings of the paranoid, neurotic little boy who sees himself as the only one who can stand in the way. Perhaps Vasquez would be interested in making the project his first venture into the movie world – though my only request would be that Richard Steven Horvitz and Rosearik Rikki Simons reprise their roles as the voices of Zim and the robotic GIR, respectively.

The Tick

It’s already been proven that The Tick works exceptionally well in live-action (thank you again, Patrick Warburton!), but while that short-lived show didn’t entirely capture the same exact absurdist nature/energy of the ‘90s animated series, one could easily see it packaged into a feature length story. Like the cartoon, the movie can be kept more on the kid-friendly side than the original comics by Ben Edlund, but at the same time serve as a wonderful deconstruction of all the tremendously popular superhero blockbusters that are currently making their way to theaters. Audiences have constantly voted for properties that can effectively offer both big laughs and big action in the same package (just look at all of the success Marvel Studios has been having), and that’s something that would be guaranteed from The Tick.

Masters of the Universe

This one is kind of cheating, as there is actually a Masters of the Universe movie currently making its way through development (not to mention one that was already made back in 1987), but let’s just call this section affirmation that there actually does exist some potential in the idea of bringing the toy-centric cartoon to life on the big screen. There is truth in saying that there really isn’t any property out there that mixes large scale fantasy and sci-fi quite in the way that we see done with He-Man, and put in the right hands it could really pop. I would personally love a filmmaker to take a semi-21 Jump Street route with it, and slyly make fun of it while also respecting the franchise, but even if it does become another summer blockbuster-style feature it could offer audiences a lot of fun at the theater.

Futurama

There perhaps was a time 10 years ago or so when I might have been on-board for the idea of a live-action version of The Simpsons… but that time has passed. I can’t say the same for Futurama, however, as one could see the creatives behind the show – specifically Matt Groening and David X. Cohen – having some fun with it. Not only could the change in mediums be explained by a Professor Farnsworth experiment gone wrong, thus making the style change an interesting part of the canon, but I would honestly just love to see how the character designs and the style of the world would be translated… not to mention how they would go about explaining why the characters have changing voices (unless the entire thing would up being dubbed).
