Any fan of all things spooky will tell you that most romantic couples in horror movies are really anything but romantic. When Ash is about to do the right thing and dismember his Deadite girlfriend with a chainsaw but, after one look at the necklace he bought her, breaks down in tears instead, it gets me every time.

Let The Right One In (Eli And Oskar)

Tomas Alfredson’s Swedish 2008 adaptation of John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel, Let the Right One In, is one of the best vampire movies to portray the struggles that come with being an undead bloodsucker. More impressively, it is also a relatable tale of first crushes, as seen through the eyes of the lonely Oskar (Kåre Hedebrant), whose affection for Eli (Lina Leandersson) remains even after he learns her dark secret.

The Conjuring (Ed And Lorraine)

If not for their indelibly terrifying imagery and breathtaking atmosphere, the core Conjuring movies would still be appealing dramas due to the impeccable chemistry between Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren. While the hit horror movie franchise does not offer the most historically accurate portrayal of the married paranormal investigators – a 2023 Vox feature covers all the infamous details of their lives and careers – I would be more than happy to invite their adorable cinematic counterparts into my home even without a demon present.

Happy Death Day (Tree And Carter)

I am surprised 2017’s Blumhouse horror movie favorite, Happy Death Day, is not more widely recognized as a great rom-com, considering how Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) falls more in love with Carter Davis (Israel Broussard) each time she wakes up in his dorm room to relive the day of her murder. Their romance is even sold more strongly in the time loop flick’s 2019 sequel, Happy Death Day 2U (also a fun multiverse movie), when Tree chooses to abandon an alternate reality where her mother is still alive but Carter is dead just so she can be with him.

Warm Bodies (R And Julie)

Director Jonathan Levine’s adaptation of Isaac Marion’s novel, Warm Bodies, reimagines the story of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet with a more positive ending… and a post-apocalyptic future setting overrun with reanimated corpses. Nicholas Hoult stars as a young zombie known only as “R,” whose major-league crush on the still-living Julie (Teresa Palmer) eclipses his craving for human flesh and ultimately proves to be the cure for the deadly plague.

The Fly (Seth And Ronnie)

In David Cronenberg’s 1986 remake of The Fly, the reclusive Dr. Seth Brundle’s (Jeff Goldblum) unexpected storybook romance with journalist Veronica “Ronnie” Quaife (Geena Davis) is cruelly interrupted by an accident that causes him to slowly become a half-man, half-insect creature. Seeing Seth’s dreadful, dehumanizing transformation through the heartbroken Ronnie’s eyes is what makes the classic body horror movie one of the genre’s all-time most upsetting romantic tragedies.

Spring (Evan And Louise)

A film that could almost be considered the antithesis to The Fly in certain ways is Justin Benson and Aaron Moorehead’s supernatural drama Spring, which feels like how Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise might have turned out if written by H.P. Lovecraft. The less you know about this underrated international thriller from 2014 the better but I will say that Evan (Lou Taylor Pucci) and Louise’s (Nadia Hilker) Italian romance serves as a wonderful, symbolic representation of love's ability to transform people into the best versions of themselves.

Tucker And Dale Vs. Evil (Dale And Allison)

Eli Craig’s clever 2010 horror-comedy movie, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, starts off, primarily, as a story of friendship, following the innocent, titular hillbillies' (played by Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine) struggle to understand why college students keep dying on their woodland property. However, as blood continues to hit the screen and more classic slasher movie tropes are subverted, the young, attractive Allison (Katrina Bowden) begins to grow more fond of Dale, who is an undeniable step up from her initial love interest, Chad (Jesse Moss), for reasons fans of the flick will understand.

Heart Eyes (Ally And Jay)

One of the more recent horror movies with a romantic twist is 2025’s darkly comedic slasher, Heart Eyes, in which recently acquainted coworkers Ally (Olivia Holt) and Jay (Mason Gooding) become mistaken for lovers by a masked killer who targets couples on Valentine’s Day. However, their more-than-professional affection becomes clear by their commitment to protecting one another from their ruthless attacker.

Ghost (Sam And Molly)

I believe that it can be healthy for us to be able to find the humor in everything, sometimes even the most grisly topics. That being said, there is no better way for us to exercise that concept than by indulging in a fun horror-comedy movie like the favorites above.

Back in early 2014, fans of writer/director Eli Craig's growing cult horror comedy Tucker and Dale vs. Evil had the opportunity to celebrate, as it was officially announced that a sequel was in the works. Sadly, however, there hasn't been any news on the project since -- and it turns out there's a good reason why: according to stars Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine, there was a script that was put into development, but apparently it just wasn't any good. Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con last week, the actors revealed,

Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine are both set to appear in the upcoming second season of the BBC America series Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, and while participating together in roundtable interviews at San Diego Comic-Con they provided an update about Tucker and Dale vs. Evil 2. At the very start of the conversation the duo was asked about the horror comedy sequel, and they bluntly explained that the project hasn't moved forward because the screenplay being written wasn't up to standards.

In Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, which was given a limited release in September 2011, Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine starred as the titular duo -- who are a couple of poor hillbillies trying to make the best of a dilapidated vacation house they've purchased in the woods. Serving as a parody of redneck horror movies, things go terribly awry when they encounter a group of remarkably clumsy college kids who are convinced they are serial killers. The movie didn't ultimately make anything at the box office following its successful festival run, but it has found an audience thanks to its availability on Blu-ray and Netflix.

Ultimately, it's the preciousness of that "cult" status that is really preventing Tucker and Dale vs. Evil 2 from moving forward. Both Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine are proud of the movie that they've made, and they don't want to do anything to lessen that particular legacy. Said the actors,

So while we should give up hope on Tucker and Dale vs. Evil 2 coming out any time soon, the good news is that the project isn't entirely dead. If someone can come up with a proper idea so that the characters could come back, it sounds like Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine are totally game to reprise the parts.

In the meantime, fans of the actors will next be able to see them both on Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency Season 2, which is now filming and will start airing on BBC America this fall.

Even though NBC has sadistically put an end to the future of the amazingness that is Hannibal, at least for the time being, this is still an incredible time to be both a horror fan and an avid TV watcher, particularly when it comes to hit movies getting boob tube adaptations. We’ve got stuff like Bates Motel and From Dusk Till Dawn out there, among others, and the future holds highly anticipated series like Ash vs. Evil Dead and an adaptation of Let the Right One In. (We’re still not quite show how to feel about Scream, but we’re warming to it.)

And so, even though the thought of more remakes is mildly off-putting, here are seven horror films that we know could stand the media jump from the big screen to the small screen. It’s only a matter of time anyway, right?

Alien

I’m sure some of your mouths are wide open, with smaller mouths popping out and screaming, “Blasphemy!” But seriously, even though science fiction TV is getting more prevalent across both broadcast networks and cable, there hasn’t been anything quite like Alien, which deftly mixes the mysteries of space and exploration with claustrophobic horror. The fact that it’s still as successful today as it was over 35 years ago is remarkable, and I absolutely think that Prometheus should have entered pop culture as a TV show, where its mythology could have been expanded and its characters could have been fully developed before they started making their insanely inane choices. Still, it wouldn’t take much beyond “creepy spaceship, deadly creatures, and masterful special effects” to give Alien a new life through a new story chapter. And if Ripley is involved, that’s even better. Way better, actually.

Creepshow

A lovingly macabre throwback to the days of EC Comics, George Romero and Stephen King’s 1982 hit Creepshow was about as good as it gets in the world of horror anthologies, juxtaposing gross-out gags with hilarity for one crazy story after another. The sequels were lacking – although “The Raft” is still one of my favorite King stories – and there was an attempt to spin the franchise as a web series called Creepshow Raw, but only one episode got made. Tales from the Darkside was supposed to be a series version of Creepshow, but rights issues stopped that from happening. We’re hopefully beyond that kind of petty garbage, and it’s time to get another horror anthology back on the air that has nothing to do with Ryan Murphy, and switches the stories up every week, rather than every season. Let’s bring a new generation of horror writers to audiences.

The Blair Witch Project

Back in 1999 when Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez unleashed the pop culture behemoth The Blair Witch Project on the world, viral marketing was in its infancy and found-footage cinema was still refreshingly sparse. Here in 2015, both of those things have been done to death, pun haphazardly intended, and we’re ready for a new interpretation of what being lost in a supernatural landscape is like. I’m not even arguing for a particular angle on this one, only offering up the option to split up the first-person perspective by using flashbacks and other narrative tricks to tell both the story of the people lost in the woods and of whatever it is that’s making the woods a dangerous place, be it the Blair Witch or something related. And even though first-time filmmakers lucked out in turning the original film into a monster success, a new interpretation would probably need a more established and visionary vet behind it. Obviously I’m nominating Bryan Fuller for this and every other choice on this list.

They Live

Now, no one is saying that John Carpenter’s They Live is as iconic or seminal to the genre as Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead series, but I am saying it’s just as fun and similarly in need of a cultural resurgence. I know that Nada died a heroic death at the end of the movie, but no version of They Live would be a proper one without Roddy Piper as the ass-kicking drifter, so obviously some rewriting would have to occur where it turns out he wasn’t dead at all, but only in some form of stasis, and he gets revived as an alien invasion once again threatens to upend mankind. Sure, it might be cheap to also bring Keith David’s Frank back from the dead, but I kind of think anything goes when it comes to spinning this awesome flick into a series. TV networks and streaming services: Obey!

Mulholland Drive

As we wait with bated breaths (that smell like coffee and pie) to see what Twin Peaks will look like on Showtime, 25 years after it originally aired, why not re-dip into the weirdo mastermind David Lynch’s back catalog for more source material? (Sure, there are plenty of reasons, but still.) It would be interesting to see Blue Velvet or Inland Empire get their darkly disturbing stories stretched out, but Lynch’s masterpiece Mulholland Drive could be a revolutionarily nightmarish addition to any network’s TV schedule, although it would obviously have to be on premium cable or Netflix. This twisty tale of Hollywood dreams, stunted sexuality, identity reversal and tiny grandparents was originally conceived as a TV series in the first place, and I’ve no doubt Lynch has other ideas for where this blue-tinted universe could take viewers. Somebody make sure the rights for Roy Orbison’s “Crying” are still available.

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil

My fandom for most horror comedies is blanketed, simply because they’re my two favorite kinds of films, but Eli Craig’s Tucker & Dale vs. Evil inarguably had one of the greatest premises of any film in the genre, as the lives of the titular and unwitting hillbillies run parallel to a series of horrific deaths that coincide with a sordid massacre’s anniversary. A TV series wouldn’t necessarily have to revisit that specific plotline, but should instead just let audiences exist alongside these bumbling buffoons in as many different situations as possible. (And sure, give us that feature sequel, too, because there will never be enough!) The only must-have in this case would be Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine returning to play Tucker and Dale, respectively, because those guys have a chemistry that’s thicker than the blood spurting out from the wood chipper.

The Wicker Man

I should hope that it doesn’t need to be said, but I’m referring to the unsettling and sexually liberating 1973 feature, and not the 2006 remake in which Nicolas Cage screams about bees. The story here would probably have to be altered a little too much to keep things fresh and different, and perhaps I’m just looking for a more generic Pagan island mystery, but everything about The Wicker Man would translate extremely well to TV as far as I can see it. A detective goes on a hunt for missing girl in a community unlike anything he or she is used to, and finds that the inhabitants have motivations also unlike anything the detective has been a part of before. Maybe I’m just projecting my loves for Kill List and Broadchurch on this, but I think this would be a perfect project for Ben Wheatley to get behind and add his signature bizarreness, with David Tenant in the lead. It’s time to keep our appointment with this one.

We’ve been hearing about Tucker & Dale vs. Evil for quite some time. It was announced a couple years ago and got some attention when Firefly’s Alan Tudyk attached himself to the property, and Reaper’s Tyler Labine completed the the titular duo. The film premiered as a midnight movie at Sundance 2010 to decent reviews and is finally, a year-and-a-half later, finding its way to theaters and VOD.

IGN has landed a fancy new red band trailer that shows off pretty much the entire movie. Tucker and Dale are a couple of lovable rednecks who accidentally kidnap a city girl, whose friends do their best to rescue her. The problem is that the college kids keep accidentally killing themselves. Check out the super gory trailer below.

As you can see, 90% of the city kids are dead by the end of the trailer so a lot of the mystique of seeing the actual movie is gone. The other big problem is that it seems like you have to buy in to the fact that the idiot city kids won’t believe the apologetic Tucker and Dale claims that they haven’t kidnapped anyone, on purpose at least.

Our own Katey Rich got to see it at Sundance and says that beyond its complete lack of ambition to do anything other than make you laugh, it handles that pretty well. As long as you go in knowing what to expect, it seems like despite its faults, you’ll at least leave entertained. Tucker & Dale vs. Evil hits VOD August 26th and theaters September 30th.

Horror comedies have to be hard to make. Scaring people and making people laugh are two completely separate talents, and to expect one filmmaker to do both is almost unreasonable. Now it may be easier to go so over the top with your horror until it’s funny or to so terribly unfunny that it’s scary, but making a movie that is legitimately funny and scary is tough.

Eli Craig hopes to do so with Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, which has just picked up two stars. THR states that Tyler Labine and Alan Tudyk have signed on for the indie horror comedy as the title characters. The movie follows two hillbillies who are mistaken for the token murderous maniacs that usually come along with a horror flick. So in essence, we’ll be seeing a bunch of scared college kids running from two dudes who have no idea what’s going on. Sounds hilarious.

Tyler Labine is great on TV's Reaper and in his 30 second cameo in Zack and Miri Make A Porno. The same goes for Alan Tudyk and his cameo in Knocked Up. It seems like Craig may have a good eye and ear for comedy,
