One of the upcoming Marvel projects I’m most excited about is the return of the X-Men. There’s been a lot of buzz around the casting of the movie, but one of the hardest roles to get right is going to be Charles Xavier. So I hope the X-Men reboot’s Professor X actor heeds this advice from James McAvoy, who played the part for four movies.

Following the original trilogy, McAvoy took up the mantel from Patrick Stewart for Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class (2011) and continued through Simon Kinberg's Dark Phoenix (2019). Now, Christopher Abbott has been cast in the role for the upcoming MCU reboot. So I’m not surprised that while McAvoy was celebrating the premiere of Faith at the Toronto International Film Festival that Collider’s Perri Nemiroff asked him what he thought. But I’m loving the refreshing advice he has for the next Professor:

What I love about this is that McAvoy essentially did the same thing when he took over the part for First Class. He explored a more troubled interpretation to the character who’s optimism wavered under pressure and loss. But the movies showed how this shaped the character into the Stewart version. So I think the actor is right that Abbott needs to find his Professor X. And his words are similar to the advice the X-Men ‘97 series EPs gave to the writers. As long as Abbott remembers the “humanity inside” inside of Charles then I’m hopeful.

This isn’t the first reboot we’ve seen. Technically, First Class launched a refreshing of the X-Men through the younger versions of Charles and Magneto. (Though we all know not to look too closely at the timelines.) So the new X-Men should give the same opportunity for Abbott to find his own version of Professor X and hopefully, give us something that feels both familiar and new. And maybe he'll feel the same way McAvoy did when he first landed the role. The actor takes us back to when he was in Abbott's shoes:

No doubt that new cast, especially Abbott, is feeling the pressure. But given the movie isn’t among the upcoming 2026 releases, it'll be a while before we see any of them in the roles. So they have a chance to get to know these characters. However, the biggest challenge remaining is the Magneto of it all, because his character has a very specific backstory as a survivor of the Holocaust. Though we saw both Bucky and Steve in the present day when they’re both from the ‘40s, so it's not impossible. I personally feel that part of who Charles is as a leader is having Magneto in opposition, and it would help Abbott figure out the character.

But even without Magneto, I can only imagine that Abbott will do something similar to bring a new Professor X to life. HIs X-Men castmates are already doubling down on their roles. Recently, we've seen Maya Boyd digging into some comics for her Storm research and Inde Navarrette planning to capture Rogue’s accent by using her own Texas roots. (Though the actor shared hopes to visit Mississippi to do the character justice.) To say they’re taking it seriously is an understatement.

So I'm confident the actor will heed some level of McAvoy's advice. And maybe he’ll also feel “liberated” as he creates a new take on the character.

Disney acquiring 20th Century Fox gave fans their wish to have the X-Men join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fast forward several years later, and that reboot is finally taking shape, with director Jake Schreier at the helm. The X-Men cast is also filling out and, as part of that, Obsession’s Inde Navarrette is playing Rogue. There's a lot to consider with the beloved character and, as of late, I've been wondering how Navarrette will approach the superhuman’s southern accent. Thankfully, her take on that proves just how seriously she's taking her MCU role.

Fans’ original guesses regarding who Inde Navarrette would play in X-Men included characters like Mystique, Kitty Pryde, Laura Kinney and Psylocke. At this point, though fans seem psyched that she'll likely be playing the mutant with white-highlighted hair and the ability to absorb powers. Just recently Navarette caught up with ET and was asked about what she's thinking in regard to Rogue's southern way of speaking. And it sounds like she's really been doing her homework:

I’m glad the 13 Reasons Why actress is really giving thought to the character's accent. During the first installment of 20th Century Fox’s X-Men movie series, Anna Paquin’s version of Rogue had a slightly southern accent. However, as the movies went on, that accent essentially became non-existent.

So it's great that Navarrette -- along with her collaborators -- are seeking to accurately portray the young superhero as presented in the comics. It's also sweet that she's looking to draw on her own southern roots as a way of informing her performance. Not all southern accents are the same, of course, so she will indeed need to zero in on that Mississippi dialect for the upcoming Marvel movie.

I’ve got to say that I’m excited for a new Rogue. As much as I love Anna Paquin’s portrayal, the famed Marvel character is completely underused in the Fox movies. She's either portrayed as a damsel in distress or a solemn young women struggling with her powers being a curse rather than a gift. My hope is that Navarette potrays the character with the vigor and wit she possesses in the comics.

Rogue aside, Marvel Studios is crafting quite a lineup for its X-Men film in terms of both cast and characters. Joining Navarette is Sadie Sink, who reprises her role as Jean Grey from Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Kit Connor (Cyclops), Christopher Abbott (Professor X), Maya Boyd (Storm), Samara Weaving (Emma Frost) and Adam Driver (Mister Sinister). Talk about a sweet ensemble.

I'm exciting to see all of these MCU newcomers take on their roles, but I'm particularly eager to see Navarrette take on the mutant Southern Belle. Should the actress truly commit to her craft, the first time she says "Sugah!" could be downright perfect.

But there's another upcoming Marvel movie that's been making headlines: Jake Schreier's developing X-Men movie. Broadway actress Maya Boyd will be playing Storm in that project, and after posting a recent photo dump, the comments are all saying the same thing.

In mid-August, (most of) the X-Men cast was revealed at D23, with names including Kit Connor, Obsession star Inde Navarrette and Adam Driver. Boyd was also confirmed to be playing Storm, and fans are invested in what she'll bring to Ororo Munroe. She recently posted a photo dump in a Storm-adjacent outfit, check it out below:

The three-time Broadway star looks ready for a stat-studded MCU premiere, despite the new X-Men movie not expected to hit theaters until 2028. And while Boyd's fit isn't exactly Storm's signature white costume, it does seem to invoke the beloved Weather Witch.

And while it's exciting that the OG stars of the X-Men movies will be back as part of the Avengers: Doomsday cast, it's arguably more thrilling that we'll be getting a brand new version of the team on the big screen. And that includes Maya Boyd's Storm.

Boyd will likely become a household name as a result of the MCU X-Men film, especially because she's playing such a beloved member of the team. She's already become synonymous with that role, and one comment from her recent photo dump pointed this out by saying:

They're not wrong. The same can be said for her predecessor Halle Berry, who fans want to see in Doomsday despite her insisting she doesn't have a role. And since Boyd is being introduced to audiences for the first time in X-Men, her association with thata role should be especially strong.

The Avengers: Doomsday cast list has a number of actors from the original X-Men movies, as well as Channing Tatum reprising the role of Gambit from Deadpool & Wolverine. But director Jake Schreier is assembling a younger cast for his movie, so a new actor will probably be needed if the beloved card-throwing mutant is going to get involved. In an interview with Collider, X-Men voice actor Chris Potter offered his recommendation for the next live-action Gambit, saying:

Honestly, I'm sold. Butler has been working non-stop as of late, with his star power growing thanks to acclaimed roles in Elvis, Dune: Part Two, and Caught Stealing. He's got the swagger to pull of Gambit, and has proven himself capable with dialect work. So why not give him Remy Lebeau's signature playing cards and staff and let him join the X-Men franchise?

Chris Potter knows Gambit well, as he voiced him in the original run X-Men: The Animated Series (which is streaming with a Disney+ subscription). While another actor took on the mantle in X-Men '97, he does have a role in that series as Cable. And I've got to say I agree with his thoughts about Austin Butler being a great choice for a live-action Gambit.

At the time of writing this story, there's no indication that Jake Schreier is actually planning on using that character in his X-Men movie. Instead the cast will include Sadie Sink's Jean Grey, Kit Connor's Cyclops, Samara Weaving's Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette's Rogue, Christopher Abbott's Professor X, Maya Boyd's Storm, and Adam Driver's villainous Mr. Sinister. We'll just have to see if any other characters end up being included in the fun as the movie gets closer to its 2028 release date. With Rogue part of the cast, there are plenty of fan who will want to see her paired with her love interest Gambit.

In this image we can see her clutching an armful of Storm comics, where her character Ororo Munroe was able to take center stage in her very own storyline. Of course, she's also got a long history as part of the X-Men comics. Still, the fact that the actress is going to the page will likely please the hardcore Marvel fans out there.

Obviously the first was Halle Berry, who some fans still want to see pop up in Avengers: Doomsday. Later Alexandra Shipp debuted as a younger Storm in Apocalypse, before reprising her role in Dark Phoenix.

Given the wild popularity of the mutants, The pressure is on for Boyd and the rest of the cast to play their roles in the new X-Men film. Luckily filmmaker Jake Schreier has already proven his ability to work on an ensemble Marvel movie, since he crushed it as the director of Thunderbolts* (which is streaming with a Disney+ subscription). And he's assembled a killer cast to bring the long-awaited movie to life. Joining Boyd are Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, and Adam Driver as the villainous Mr. Sinister.

Hopefully this stellar group of actors get their nose in the comic book ahead of filming. Maya Boyd is leading by example here, and likely got some serious brownie points from Marvel fans out there. And I can't wait to see what she brings to the role.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for constantly treating fans to new content, both in theaters and streaming with a Disney+ subscription. There are a number of upcoming Marvel movies that fans are curious about, chief among them being Jake Schreier's developing X-Men movie. And a new rumor about that blockbuster has me confused about Hugh Jackman's future as Wolverine.

The Greatest Showman actor returned as Logan in Deadpool & Wolverine, which broke records at the box office and seemingly confirmed he'd continue playing the clawed mutant. But Jackman was noticeably missing from X-Men's casting announcement, and a new rumor listed a bunch of other mutants who might pop up during the movie's runtime. That viral tweet alleges:

Well, I'm stumped. Hugh Jackman was the face of the original X-Men movies, starring in seven titles (as well as a handful of cameos). And after he returned to Wolverine in the third Deadpool movie, it seemed clear he was going to be playing the role "till he's 90." But if this rumor is to be believed, he's not going to be included in the fun of Schreier's MCU blockbuster. Talk about a bummer.

Of course, this isn't official just yet, and there are countless Marvel rumors that don't actually end up coming to fruition. The cast that was announced seems to indicate that the team of mutants will be a bit younger than the OGs, which might be the reason for leaving Wolverine out... at least for now. Still, it's hard to imagine a new X-Men movie without Weapon X. This is especially noteworthy since Deadpool 3 was such a wild financial success, coming shortly after box office bombs like The Marvels.

What Ryan Reynolds Has Said About Deadpool's Future.

If this rumor turns out to be legit and Wolverine won't be in the X-Men movie, I have to assume that he'll pop up in whatever comes next for Deadpool. Jackman and Reynolds were both not included in the Avengers: Doomsday cast announcement, but plenty of folks are hoping they appear in either that title or Secret Wars. For his part, Reynolds has denied appearing in the next Avenger movie.

So, if Jackman isn't going to be in Doomsday or X-Men, then fans might have to wait for a fourth Deadpool flick. Shortly after the threequel was released Reynolds mentioned wanting to take a break from Wade Wilson, saying:

While this seemed pretty cut and dry, rumor swirled about Ryan Reynolds developing Deadpool 4 sooner rather than later, especially amidst his wife Blake Lively's ongoing (and expensive) legal battle with Justin Baldoni. Is anyone else's head spinning?

Overall I feel totally clueless about when and where we should expect Hugh Jackman's Wolverine to return to the big screen. I personally feel like there's going to be a Logan-Sized hole in the X-Men movie, but maybe he'll end up having a surprise role after all. Fingers crossed.

Currently, one of the most talked about upcoming Marvel movies (aside from Doomsday) is the developing X-Men reboot movie. While most details have been limited, the casting announcement at D23 has given us a huge tease at what to expect. And everyone has an opinion on what the new movie should (and shouldn’t) be. Even X-Men ‘97 EPs Eric and Julia Lewald have some advice for the MCU’s reboot. And honestly, I hope the creative team is listening.

Some of my favorite X-Men projects have focused on the humanity of the characters and not just their cool superpowers. And the Lewald duo know what they’re talking about. Fans have fallen in love with the X-Men all over again thanks to their animated series, which has had stand out episodes like the Gambit one. But no one says it better than Julia Lewald who told Collider:

I hope Marvel is taking notes. One thing I’ve always loved about the mutant characters is their humanity and the found family of the X-Men team. That's also why I loved recently cancelled Wonder Man so much. Thankfully, it seems that Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier is taking the movie seriously, as he described it as an “incredible opportunity and quite a responsibility.” The desire Marvel has to do something new with the characters has me both excited and nervous.

But we have seen some success with that mentality. Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Thunderbolts* performed well at the box office. And it seems that fans are getting excited again to see what Marvel has to offer. This is, in part, thanks to X-Men ‘97 Season 2 which was part of this summer’s new releases and can be checked out with a Disney+ subscription. It also proves that the EPs know what they’re talking about. And why I can’t help agreeing with the moving piece of advice Eric Lewald offers:

It can be easy to get carried away with superpowers and fight scenes over character-driven storytelling. We’ve seen this with Marvel. But we’ve also seen the studio get it completely right. I think Eric Lewald describes it in the loveliest way: “You want to challenge the characters, but you can’t change them. You have to be true to them. That’s the core of all storytelling.” Keeping this in mind and knowing the script is being written by Joanna Calo (The Bear) and Lee Sung Jin (Beef), my confidence is tentatively high.

For now, details are limited about that film. But we do have the main cast (so far) already announced. Some fan-favorites getting new life with Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Inde Navarette as Rogue, and Adam Driver as Mr. Sinister. However, currently we haven’t received any news about a Magneto casting or if we’ll see the character in the upcoming movie.

That said, I hope that whatever direction Marvel takes they listen to advice like what the Lewalds shared and focus on the characters. If they do this, then I think the MCU’s future is going to be amazing!

Marvel Studios has officially announced its cast for the next generation of X-Men, and while there's a lot of positive buzz right now on the heels of Sadie Sink's Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, I think there's a problem. The franchise has yet to announce who will play Magneto, but I'm wondering how the character can even be the same at all given this new cast.

With this X-Men cast being rooted in the present, and former Girls actor Christopher Abbott playing Charles Xavier at 40-years-old has me speculating that Magneto's actor will remain relatively the same age. In any case, rooting this movie in the present has me wondering if the studio has thought about the character's big origin as a Holocaust survivor, and how that experience shaped his complicated viewpoints on whether humanity and Mutants can co-exist. It has me wondering: are we in for a big Magneto retcon, or does Marvel have other plans?

Can Magneto Be The Same Without His Origin Being Rooted In The Holocaust?

As mentioned, Magneto's core philosophy was shaped by losing his family in the Holocaust and spending time in Auschwitz during WWII. Even though he's skewed the spectrum from supervillain to ally to the X-Men, he's long held the belief that humanity will always turn on the minority amongst them, and several key X-Men storylines have enforced that.

With the median age of a Holocaust Survivor being around mid-80s in 2026, it just doesn't seem feasible that we'll see a version of Magneto that will also be a colleague of Charles Xavier relative to his age. It seems that something will have to change in Marvel Studios' version when it comes to Magneto, but the question is what.

One solution could be to reintroduce the character and tie it to some other modern tragedy. Another possible solution would be to bring in a Magneto from another universe, one in which the historical events on Earth were in line with something that was similar to this younger Magneto's origin.

Of course, there's going to be fan backlash in making any core changes to Magneto, who is one of Marvel's more celebrated characters. Additionally, the optics of drastically changing the character's origin, or keeping it intact under certain circumstances, could be messy. In short, I'm not surprised the X-Men started with casting Mr. Sinister as an X-Men villain, because transforming Magneto might be a tough nut to crack.

Can Marvel Studios, Who Has Steered Away from Controversy, Accurately Tackle The X-Men?

One thing that's consistent about Marvel Studios is that it has tried to steer away from controversy or tackling modern societal issues, even when the opportunity was there. It feels like a problem, then, to be introducing a superhero group that exposes bigotry as a terrible thing, as Stan Lee once stated in a Rolling Stone interview.

Between Magneto's origins as a Holocaust survivor and so many of X-Men's biggest comic stories serving as a mirror to the Civil Rights movement in the United States, is Marvel Studios planning to service that in its stories? If not, then they'll just be nothing more than another generic superhero team.

It's heavy, but so is the world we have that lacks superheroes. I would love to see the X-Men become symbols for a new generation, especially with this talented cast, in a way they were for others in the past. With a cast that seems solidly ready to tell their story in the present day, the ball is in Marvel's court to make it happen.

I'll wait and see what the plans are for Mutants in the MCU, and in the meantime, enjoy older X-Men movies with my Disney+ subscription. I'll be waiting to see who is picked for Magneto, and hopefully they live up to past actors who played the role!

Let’s be real, the upcoming X-Men reboot movie should have everyone excited. Especially since they announced at D23 that the key cast will include Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey and more. Despite denying interest in joining the MCU, Kit Connor has also joined the ensemble to play Cyclops, and his casting has me the most excited. And I’m not the only one, because I just discovered some cool X-Men fan art that puts Connor into the Cyclops uniform.

While I’m super excited to see everyone's takes on these iconic characters, Cyclops has been my favorite since James Marsden’s portrayal in the movies from the early 2000s. So I’ll gladly take whatever I can get. And I have to admit, Connor looks pretty cool:

Fingers crossed that he looks this cool in the upcoming movie. I have a feeling he will, especially since Connor and some of the other cast are playing exactly who we thought they’d be. However, I do have to say that this visual is really helping this vision come together.

Seeing this art also makes me even more ready to see how the reboot turns out, and I’m not the only one. X-Men fans are loving seeing Connor suited up. While there are a few who want more ‘comic-accurate’ aesthetics (“high neck and ear coverings,” according to atombombc4), most are giving bosslogic a lot of love for the artwork. It will be a bit of a wait until we get to see Kit Connor officially as Cyclops, as the upcoming X-Men won’t be part of the 2026 movie schedule. It is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2028. So we won’t know anything more for a while. Not even if those Charles Melton as Beast rumors turn out to be true. But I have faith in Jake Schreier’s version of the X-Men, and this fan art has made me even more confident in what they're making.

While we wait to see Connor on the big screen, we do have Doomsday to look forward to since James Marsden is returning as Cyclops 27 years after he made his Marvel debut. And yes, I spotted him in the trailer. I just hope they don’t go the X-Men: Last Stand route with him. Though Days of Future Past did rectify that decision.

Then, after that, I'll have Connor's upcoming Marvel movie circled on my calendar, because I seriously cannot wait to see him as Cyclops...especially after seeing this fan art of him.

At long last, after many months of detail-lite comments from Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige and director Jake Schreier, on top of all the general fan speculation, the MCU’s long-awaited X-Men movie’s cast was made official (at least in part) surrounding the D23 fan event. But only after Spider-Man: Brand New Day confirmed Sadie Sink as the telepathic Jean Grey, and scream queen Samara Weaving was announced as the ice-cold Emma Frost.

Weaving and Sink will be joined by Heartstopper’s Kit Conner as Cyclops, Obsession highlight Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Wolf Man’s Christopher Abbott as Professor X, and stage actress Maya Boyd making her feature film debut as Storm, while Adam Driver is set to portray Mr. Sinister alter ego Nathaniel Milbury. Though it’s not clear just yet exactly when production will start up, the release date for the upcoming Marvel movie has been set for May 5, 2028. Which means time is of the essence for cast members to get busy with researching their roles.

Samara Weaving proved she is doing her due diligence in a most fitting fashion (while donning some fitting fashion), as she took to Instagram to share how she's balancing the summer sun with a bikini and a stack of Emma Frost comic books, along with other shots from D23. Check it out!

It's almost as if the actress knows extremely well just how obsessive and detail-oriented comic book fans can be online. Her "Don't read into it" message is presumably to stymie speculation based solely on the particular comic issues and trades that are spread out in front of her. I'm sure there are still Emma Frost fanatics out there who have already filled up at least one bulletin board with clues and theories. Hopefully they won't be too disappointed if and when none of that guesswork matches up with the live-action character's story arc.

The middle finger shot isn't directed at fans, though, at least not in an authentically disdainful way. It's (assumedly) more about embodying Emma Frost's somewhat chaotic energy. The telepathic mutant is known for her educational prowess as much as her amoral approach to most situations, and snarkily flipping the bird is pretty on-point. As is the white dress she wore to D23. Not so much the bikini, however.

With Weaving and others making up some of the X-Men’s newest generation of mutants, we’re still waiting to hear if Charles Melton will be playing Beast, and what’s happening with Magneto and other major characters who still haven’t been cast (that we know of). In the meantime…well, just keep waiting, I guess. Because it’s gonna be a long 20 months until X-Men lands in theaters.

For those who can't get enough of Samara Weaving, find her in the 2026 comedic thriller Over Your Dead Body opposite Jason Segel, which is currently available on digital and VOD. She'll also be appearing in the The Legend of Zelda, which Nintendo will be releasing in 2027.

It’s a big year for Marvel fans, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day topping the box office after a 5-year break in the franchise, and Avengers: Doomsday slated for release later on the 2026 movie schedule. The MCU fans keep getting fed, too, as Disney’s D23 Fan Expo finally revealed the cast of the new X-Men movie, which will be directed by Jake Schreier. There are some big names signed on to this upcoming Marvel project, including Kit Connor, and now I’m cracking up over the times the Heartstopper actor denied the potential to join the MCU.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige officially introduced the new X-Men cast, and wow, it’s star-studded. Obviously, Sadie Sink will be playing Jean Gray, after her character debuted as the antagonist in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. However, quite a few castings surprised me, including Kit Connor as Cyclops, mostly because joining a Marvel project has been so far off his radar.

To that point, I can’t stop thinking about all the times in the past couple of years he's denied interest in the MCU, and thankfully, someone on TikTok made a compilation:

I’m dying at the playful overlay text “all men do is lie,” because there's almost no chance Connor knew his future MCU involvement. Both clips in the compilation are from over a year ago, the first being from an MTV interview in July 2024, and the second being a HuffPost clip from July 2025. A couple of months before that second interview, reports that Schreier was going to direct the film had come out, but overall, there was very little known about this X-Men reboot.

Of course, Connor's Heartstopper co-star Joe Locke has already made his Marvel debut as Wanda and Vision’s son Billy Maximoff in 2024's Agatha All Along. And that's why Connor was getting questions about joining the MCU.

Now, with Heartstopper Forever, which is available to stream with a Netflix subscription, marking an end to the beloved romance series, I've been thinking about what Connor could do next. My mind couldn't help but wander back to Marvel, and now that the Warfare actor's casting as Cyclops is official, the irony of these clips is hilarious.

I have to wonder if Locke, whose true character was a well-kept secret for a long time, knew about Connor’s X-Men casting in advance. If he did, I’m sure he was able to provide some great pointers on keeping MCU secrets.

Everyone knows how top secret Marvel keeps their casts and scripts. They take their NDAs very seriously, and some actors are better at keeping their lips locked than others. Sadie Sink proved to be very skilled at avoiding questions about her character during the Brand New Day press tour, unlike Spidey himself, Tom Holland, who is notorious for spoiling Marvel movies. But it seems like Connor and the new X-Men cast did a good job of keeping their lips sealed leading up to D23.

In addition to Kit Connor as Cyclops, Sadie Sink as Jean Gray, and Samara Weaving as Emma Frost (which was previously announced), Feige introduced Maya Boyd as Storm, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Adam Driver as Mr. Sinister.

Many fans were shocked to see Navarrette announced as Rogue, after she showed interest in playing Mystique. However, after her potentially nomination-worthy performance in the hit horror film Obsession, I’m excited to see where she will take this next role, and I have no doubt she will knock it out of the park.

Additionally, I think this is a great next step for the Heartstopper actor as well, as he has yet to partake in any project like it. Unfortunately, Schreier’s X-Men movie isn’t slated until 2028. I can only hope for some X-Men morsels in a post-credit scene when Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18.

It’s finally official: after tons of reports, rumors and speculation, the cast of the new X-Men movie has been announced. Overall, it’s made up of folks I fully expected to see. However, there is one casting choice that really surprised me.

Alright, let’s get into this. At D23, the new cast of X-Men was brought out during the part of the event dedicated to upcoming Marvel movies and TV shows. Of course, it includes Sadie Sink, who will be reprising her role as Jean Grey after being introduced in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which premiered on the 2026 movie schedule a couple of weeks ago.

Alongside her will be Samara Weaving as Emma Frost and Kit Connor as Cyclops, both of whom we knew about.

Now, getting into the new additions, Christopher Abbott will play Professor X, Adam Driver is set to portray Mr. Sinister, Maya Boyd will take on the role of Storm, and Inde Navarrette has been cast as Rogue.

To put that all into a nice list, here’s everything we know about who is in the new X-Men movie:

Again, we anticipated a lot of this, thanks to rumors that have broken over the last few weeks and days. However, I was still surprised to see this ensemble and specifically Inde Navarrette's casting as Rogue. That’s because the Obsession star has been open about her love for Mystique, and it was speculated that she could play her in the MCU. During an interview with Variety, she discussed a meeting she had with X-Men’s director, Jake Schreier, and she also noted that:

So, that’s why I had Mystique on my mind. However, she’s actually taking on the role of Rogue, and I cannot wait to see her playing this iconic X-Men character.

Maya Boyd also came as a bit of a shock, because there were a few names being thrown around for Storm.

Interestingly, there was also one character left out of the presentation that surprised me. Along with various other rumors, it's been widely speculated that Charles Melton could play Beast. He was even asked about it recently. However, he was not announced, and neither were other X-Men staples like Magneto or Mystique.

It’s always possible the cast can grow, and at the moment, there’s still a lot we don’t know about this new iteration of X-Men. However, we finally have some names to attach to characters, which is incredibly exciting!

Before we see them in action, though, you can see the Fox X-Men stars return in Avengers: Doomsday on December 18. Then, it will be interesting to see how Marvel moves on with this new class of heroes on May 5, 2028.

With the new X-Men movie being cast, I’m not surprised to see how many actors are rumored to be taking part. I’ve seen everything from Jensen Ackles rumored to be the next Magneto (I could see it) to actors like Cynthia Erivo lobbying for dream roles. Charles Melton’s name has also been in the mix, and someone finally asked him about those rumors that he's playing Beast in the new X-Men. And his answer has me intrigued.

This isn’t the first time Melton has been the subject of fan casting, as he’s previously been on the fan list to play Ganke Lee in a potential Miles Morales live-action film. Fans desperately want the actor involved in a superhero project. And I can’t blame them. Melton has proven he has the range to do anything; just check out his rooftop breakdown in May December if you want proof. But how does he feel about all these rumors? Well, he answers that very question when the subject gets brought up by The Playlist:

The upcoming project will be directed by Jake Schreier, who also directed Thunderbolts*, and has an epic team-up penning the script. Beef creator Lee Sung Jin is expected to co-write the project with The Bear co-showrunner Joanna Calo. If these rumors were true, it’d be a reunion between Melton and Jin, as the actor recently had a role on Beef Season 2. His performance has been praised by critics and fans, specifically for how his storyline tackled racial identity. While I didn’t have Melton down as part of my dream X-Men, I can totally see him as Beast.

However, the only actual casting confirmations we’ve gotten so far is: Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Sadie Sink (who was revealed in Spider-Man: Brand New Day) as Jean Gray. Heartstopper’s Kit Connor also reportedly in talks to play Cyclops. After Sink’s big reveal, I wasn’t surprised when Cyclops was allegedly the next role to be cast. If the rumors were true, it’d be a fun reunion between Melton and Connor as the two starred together in Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza’s intense war movie Warfare. And the role would be something up his ally, given how he spoke about his time on Beef:

That definitely sounds like something the upcoming X-Men can achieve, especially given the praise Melton has given the Beef creator for his collaborative writing style. But we won’t know anything else until Doomsday, and maybe not even until the next upcoming Marvel movies. Hopefully, we’ll get more casting news soon.

Because the more I see revealed about the upcoming X-Men project, the more excited I become, especially with how Kevin Feige talks about their MCU future. His desire to “bring storylines to a close” from the early ‘00s films and the casting we’ve already gotten, I’ve never been more excited to be an X-Men fan.

This makes me hopeful that we can expect great things from Feige and Marvel for the X-Men. But only time will tell us if that’s true.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently the biggest movie in the world alongside Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, and doesn’t seem like it’ll be tanking at the box office anytime soon. So from at least one perspective, co-star Sadie Sink was responsible for keeping a lid on one of the most lucrative secrets in cinema history. And to her credit, she made it to release without letting it slip (to the public, anyway), but at what point will she have to start zipping her lips again as the MCU’s X-Men feature comes together?

For instance, is it possible Sink is already playing dumb about the current progress of the next project where she’ll be portraying Jean Grey? It’s hard to automatically know one way or the other without Tom Holland around to provide tells. For instance, when asked by Vanity Fair about the latest casting rumors for Scott “Cyclops” Summers, the character Jean is often closest to in the comics, Sink claimed to have no direct insights, saying:

If we take her words to heart, then it indicates the upcoming Marvel movie being directed by Jake Schreier could potentially be casting for its biggest roles without chemistry sessions between stars. Hardly the biggest Hollywood sin at this point in the game, but still an interesting situation if that is indeed the case.

Sink elaborated a bit after being asked if the set-up for the X-Men feature has been a separate process from everything she dealt with regarding her Spider-Man involvement. To which she answered:

Sounds like a normal enough answer, except she almost too-quickly veers away from speaking about herself and where she fits into it all. She points out that she's getting insights from the director himself, and then pivots to pre-planned quotes and talking points about the "timing of it" and having Jean be introduced through Brand New Day. Sounds like somebody needed to fill some space.

Of course, it may just be that she didn't know, and wanted to have some kind of an answer so that she wasn't just sitting there quietly. But I'm still a little bit suspicious. It's too bad I don;t have any telepathic powers myself, although I dare say I'd be using them for things other than figuring out whether Sadie Sink is fibbing about X-Men stuff.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently in theaters, where Jean Grey's reveal has been a legitimate surprise for some crowds.

Anthony Mackie has spent more than a decade inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe machine, so you might assume it takes quite a bit to leave him starstruck these days. Then Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart walked onto the set of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, and suddenly the current Captain America was just another fan trying to work up the nerve to say hello.

Mackie recalled meeting the two X-Men legends while speaking with IMDb, and his story about introducing himself to the returning mutant actors is ridiculously sweet. Marvel announced the first Doomsday trailer confirmed McKellen and Stewart were returning for the new Marvel movie, alongside several other veterans of Fox’s X-Men movies, while He returns as Sam Wilson. The 8 Mile star started by describing just how surreal it was to see the pair on set.

Honestly, “their first name is Sir” is a pretty great summation of what it must feel like to suddenly find Professor X and Magneto hanging around your workplace. What a sight to see, and apparently even Robert Downey Jr. was nerding out over the OG stars.

Eventually, Mackie made his way over to the Lord of the Rings star and introduced himself. He said McKellen greeted him with, “Hello, son,” which already sounds exactly like the sort of thing you would hope Gandalf says when you meet him. Then McKellen asked:

Apparently, nobody had given Magneto the complete MCU orientation packet. The Shakespearean actor's response was only five words, but the Desert Warrior actor clearly has not forgotten it. He continued:

That is a lovely bit of encouragement coming from someone who helped define the modern superhero movie long before Mackie ever strapped on a pair of Falcon wings.

The encounter also offers a fun glimpse at just how strange the Avengers: Doomsday set must be. McKellen first played Magneto in 2000’s X-Men, while Stewart debuted as Charles Xavier in the same movie. Mackie did not enter the MCU as Sam Wilson until Captain America: The Winter Soldier more than a decade later. Now all three are appearing in the same Avengers movie.

Marvel’s enormous Doomsday cast also includes James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Alan Cumming and Kelsey Grammer from the X-Men films, alongside MCU veterans including Chris Hemsworth, Sebastian Stan, Tom Hiddleston, Letitia Wright and Paul Rudd. Robert Downey Jr. is returning in a very different role as Victor von Doom.

Chris Evans will return as Steve Rogers, which makes Mackie’s place in the movie especially interesting now that Sam carries the Captain America mantle. Whatever happens when all these characters finally meet on screen, the Twisted Metal actor already got one pretty great crossover moment out of the production. Captain America received Magneto’s blessing.

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters Dec. 18, 2026. Until then, fans can revisit all the Marvel movies in order, even the Fox era, streaming with a Disney+ subscription.

With all of this X-Men chatter lately, you’d think it was the ‘90s all over again (I guess that’s what X-Men ‘97 is all about, really). Seriously, have the X-Men ever been this much a part of public discussion as they are right now?

I mean, between their upcoming role in Avengers: Doomsday, their future in the MCU, and (spoiler!) one of their members appearing in another MCU project, the X-Men just seem ubiquitous right now… and I like it!

It got me thinking about what is arguably the best X-Men movie of all time, 2011’s X-Men: First Class. I’ve loved most of the X-Men movies, but this one stands head and shoulders above the rest. Here’s why.

Making Charles And Erik’s Relationship The Center Of The Film Was The Right Call

While it’s popular to believe that Professor Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr, aka Magneto, were inspired by Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, respectively, the truth is, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby never intended for the comparison. That said, it just fits so perfectly, doesn’t it?

The fight for Mutant rights is certainly analogous to the Civil Rights Movement. That movement kickstarted in the mid-’50s, while the X-Men debuted in 1963. Plus, Martin Luther King Jr.’s peaceful approach to integration is similar to what Professor X would later propose, while Magneto’s more militant approach mirrored the earlier “By Any Means Necessary” approach by Malcolm X.

X-Men: First Class wonderfully shows this dichotomy of peace vs. force. Throughout the film, we see Charles (James McAvoy) and Erik (Michael Fassbender) working together to create mutant acceptance. Erik, a survivor of the Holocaust, views humankind with disdain, but, because of Charles’ optimism and friendship, tries to make it work.

As you already know, it doesn’t work. The CIA creates a special unit for mutants, but it turns out that the government is just as quick to get rid of them, which breaks the bond between Magneto and Charles. Their friendship and ultimate parting of ways really work as the crux of this film.

The Time Period Has Never Felt More Important In A Comic Book Movie

X-Men: Days of Future Past focuses on the “future,” 2023, and also 1973. The film’s conceit is more just an excuse to connect the “old” X-Men from the 2000s with the “new” X-Men of the 2010s. Only X-Men: First Class really makes the time period feel wholly essential to the story, as it takes place in the 1960s at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

In fact, the whole third act consists of a what-if scenario of what-if mutants actually were the cause of all of the international tension back then? We also get a true sense of the overall turmoil back in the ‘60s, which was, again, the height of the Civil Rights Movement.

All of this makes X-Men: First Class feel like not only a comic book film, but also a great history lesson, which is amazing.

It Gets To The Heart Of What Makes X-Men Special - The Fight To End Bigotry From Different Sides

Is First Class a movie that explores race and social justice? Not really, but it certainly feels like one.

X-Men has always been the most “woke” popular comic book series. Mutants can be substituted for any particular race, religion, or sexual orientation, and the “enemy” is anybody who views them as disgusting, or worse, sinful and deserving to be eradicated.

First Class works better than any other X-Men film because it fully leans into this. It’s great not just because it’s enthralling, but also because it truly tackles the issue of what the best way to fight bigotry is, and it never really lands on an absolute answer (as it shouldn’t).

Was Charles right? Was Magneto? That’s up for the viewer to decide, which is why I think this X-Men film in particular is the most special, and the greatest of them all.

Sadie Sink just completely changed what’s next in the MCU. After over a year of anticipation, it was revealed in Spider-Man: Brand New Day that the 24-year-old Stranger Things alum is the MCU’s Jean Grey. Now that the cat’s officially out of the bag, Sink just talked about who she told her confidential casting to (and that list includes some surprising folks from Stranger Things).

Being a mutant is not an easy secret to keep, but Sadie Sink seemed to do an incredible job staying tight-lipped. But in a new interview, she just shared how many people she told about the mysterious role. In her words:

In an interview with Variety, Sadie Sink admitted that she had a handful of trusted confidants outside of Brand New Day. The actress said she told members of her family and the creators of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, were in the know too, which kind of surprised me. Here’s what she said of the Duffers’ reaction to the big MCU role:

Sadie Sink admittedly knew very little about Jean Grey and had never seen the X-Men movies when she was approached for the Brand New Day role. It sounds like their reaction to the opportunity really helped give her confidence to take it on, especially since the Stranger Things creators are comic book fans themselves. But did she tell any of her Stranger Things cast? As she responded:

Whoa. I guess her castmates were left in the dark for the past year and some change after she was picked to be Jean Grey.

There’s been a ton of rumors surrounding who Sink was playing (including her actual role being leaked early on). Since she was cast in March 2025, Sadie has had to find unique ways to tease her role without revealing it.

As a result of all the hush-hush, there were big reactions in theaters at her character being named in Brand New Day. If I were one of Sadie Sink’s castmates, I would have probably tried to get the tea – so I’m shocked to learn only the Duffers were clued in among the Stranger Things family.

Now that Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey has been introduced in Brand New Day, she’s expected to be in the planned X-Men reboot. Of course, she could share the secret to her Brand New Day family (who she once made feel old), or she could confide in the Duffers again.

However, no matter what happens next, now that Brand New Day has had the biggest box office week ever and soared to over $1 billion worldwide, it's safe to say a lot of people know Sadie Sink’s character now!

Spoilers ahead for the most recent episode of X-Men '97 "The Dead Man's Hand"

Nostalgia is a powerful force in the entertainment industry, with plenty of millennial fans looking to return to a simpler time with titles from their childhood. Case in point: X-Men '97 (streaming with a Disney+ subscription), which is a direct sequel to the beloved 1990s animated series. The second season has been a fun ride so far, and while I loved the recent Gambit episode, I noticed a mistake with Jean Grey. Hear me out.

Critics raved about X-Men '97's first season, and fans were hyped about Season 2 ahead of its release. The most recent episode featured a corrupted Gambit attacking our heroes, following his tragic death in Season 1. When his forces in the air attack the X-Force's jet, the flying heroes immediately exit and take to the air. That includes Archangel, Sunspot, and Jean Grey.

But just moments later, the latter mutant is seen inside the ship when Bella Donna and the Thieves Guild board the ship and fight those within it. You can see Jean in the background of one such shot below:

Since Jean was already shown flying outside of the X-Force jet, this seems like a clear continuity error to me. It's easy to not clock this, but as a Jean fan I was paying extra attention to where she was and how she used her telekinetic powers in this fight scene. Although after Sadie Sink debuted as Jean in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, I might not be the only one who was giving the beloved character extra attention.

Errors happen on both TV and film all the time, so this isn't a huge deal. There's been a learning curve for the folks making X-Men '97, and I assume that someone noticed the Jean mistake before it was released. But perhaps it was just too late to go in and fix it, especially in an expensive action sequence that features lots of mutant power animation. I'm still a big fan of the animated series, but I had to go rewind and make sure I wasn't losing it when Jean was two places at once. There is just one episode left of X-Men '97 Season 2, and it should be interesting to see how the ambitious narrative comes to an end. In addition to the battle with Apocalypse across the timelines, this season we saw three different teams of mutants: the X-Men, the X-Force, and X-Factor. And now that Gambit has been revived, there's no telling what's going to happen in the finale.

New episodes of X-Men '97 air Wednesdays on Disney+ as part of the 2026 TV schedule. Luckily for fans like me, Seasons 3 and 4 are already in development. Mutants forever!

Fans are always curious about upcoming Marvel movies, and that includes Jake Schreier's developing X-Men movie. Just take my money at this point. The Ready or Not star looks truly incredible as Emma, and that's before we even see her in her iconic diamond form. And with a series of acclaimed performances on her resume, Weaving has both the talent and the look to pull off playing The White Queen. We'll just have to wait and see how comic-accurate her costume ends up being when Weaving debuts as her new character on the big screen.

The X-Men are wildly popular Marvel heroes, so news of Samara Weaving's casting quickly went viral online, especially for the hardcore fandom. And now that the Thunderbolts* director is actively casting, his mutant-centric movie has never felt more real. And I can't wait to see who else joins the burgeoning cast of this mysterious movie.

The movie's ending saw her leave NYC and seemingly head upstate, with fans assuming she'll end up as the X-Mansion. But will she find Charles Xavier there or Emma Frost? Only time will tell.

Emma has a long history in X-Men comics, TV shows, video games, and more. She was played in live-action by January Jones in First Class, although not everyone was happy with her portrayal. Most recently the character appeared in X-Men '97, as well as the video game Marvel Rivals. Now we're getting another live-action version of the character, and it should be interesting to see if she's introduced as a hero or a villain.

The new X-Men movie is currently expected to hit theaters sometime in 2028, so hopefully we hear more about casting sooner rather than later. The next Marvel movie hitting theaters is Avengers: Doomsday on December 18th as part of the 2026 movie release list, and will feature a number of OG stars from Fox's X-Men franchise.

Comic books and horror go together like questionably chunky peanut butter and runny, blood-red jelly, and actor Bill Skarsgård soon have feet in both camps again after previously appearing in Deadpool 2 (and later Eternals) in between Pennywise performances in Andy Muschietti’s IT films. Fans can almost definitely expect to see Pennywise’s return in IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2, which HBO boss swears is still in the cards despite the lack of a renewal, and he’s now also rumored for a major X-Men role in the MCU.

Let’s first put our attention on Skarsgård’s potential return to Marvel before shifting over to IT: Welcome to Derry co-creator Muschietti’s latest update about Season 2, which already sounds more dire and dismal than anything the X-Men might be dealing with in Jake Schreier’s impending movie.

Bill Skarsgård Is Rumored To Be Up For Major X-Men Role

The box office-shattering release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day pointed audiences to the MCU's future with presumed set-ups for Avengers sequels Doomsday and Secret Wars, as well as a potential X-Men feature. That release followed many weeks of rumor mill fodder targeting actors allegedly being primed to play rebooted mutants, from Adam Driver as Magneto to Anya Taylor-Joy reportedly being tapped for Magik. With Samara Weaving now seemingly confirmed to play Emma Frost, fans can possibly look forward to an uptick in legitimate updates.

Enter Bill Skarsgård, who is reportedly up for contention to portray the X-Men's guiding light of a leader, Charles Xavier. This rumor comes from Jeff Sneider's The Insneider, which has a good enough track record at this point that the rumor shouldn't be immediately dismissed.

Though perhaps not the most obvious choice to portray the genius telepath on the big screen, Skarsgård has certainly proven himself capable of falling into roles with extensive makeup and prosthetics. Not just with Pennywise, but also with the 2024 films Nosferatu and The Crow. And just before those, he starred in the bonkers action flick Boy Kills World, so he's also well-versed in over-the-top action sequences just in the past few years.

Interestingly, the other actor reportedly in consideration for Professor X is Tom Pelphrey, who's seemingly made just as many headlines for being Kaley Cuoco's hubby for his acclaimed roles in dark dramas like Ozark and Task. I don't know that I've seen him deliver any performances as nuanced as Bill Skarsgård, so if that's what Jake Schreier & Co. are looking for with the new Xavier, I think he'll be the go-to pick. Assuming the rumors are even true in the first place.

What IT: Welcome To Derry's Creator Is Saying About Season 2

To jump from rumors to words straight from a TV creator's mouth, let's pull focus over to the newest IT: Welcome to Derry update from EP and director Andy Muschietti, who revealed to Variety that the writers room is going full-steam ahead, and that they're working hard to bring the second season's 1935 timeline to life, even if it doesn't sound like the most lively setting. As he put it:

As previously revealed and hinted at in the IT: Welcome to Derry opening titles for Season 1, the second chapter will center partly on the Stephen King novel's interlude about the Bradley Gang Massacre that turned the small town upside down. The group of outlaws are on the run from the FBI when they take temporary shelter in Derry, where its members do all kinds of looting, killing and then some.

Those actions speak to the "trying to get by and survive" bit of Muschietti's tease. As if occasional cycles of pure evil weren't enough, the locals gotta deal with roughneck criminals as well? Sheesh.

Andy Muschietti described more of the desolate times that Welcome to Derry's characters will experience in Season 2, saying:

No details were shared about the new group of characters, but he did fully confirm that "there’s a family tree that appears" in Season 2 that will serve as a direct connection to the two IT features and/or the first season, which already set up Marge as the biological mother of Richie. Will we spent time with Marge's parents when they were kids, or will the connections only tie into other characters? Considering the Hanlon family moved to Derry around the time of IT's 1962 cycle, it doesn't seem likely we'll see any more of that family's relatives in the show's future.

I can't wait to see IT: Welcome to Derry join all the other upcoming horror TV shows that I'll be shoving my face in front of as the months go by. But in the meantime, Season 1 is available to stream via HBO Max subscription.

In the two decades since The Notebook came out, Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams and James Marsden have cemented themselves as certified stars thanks to their diverse filmographies. However, now, they all have something in common (other than the great 2000s movie) thanks to Gosling being announced as Ghost Rider. Marsden commented on this connection too, and it honestly blew my mind.

This connection is that the three major stars from The Notebook are now all, officially, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That’s thanks to two relatively recent developments. First of all, while James Marsden made his Marvel debut four years before the Nicholas Sparks adaptation even came out, he will make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut when he returns as Cyclops in Avengers: Doomsday. Secondly, Ryan Gosling is now joining this universe as Ghost Rider. Meanwhile, Rachel McAdams entered Marvel's world in 2016 as Dr. Christine Palmer in Doctor Strange. Reacting to this revelation that they’re all in the MCU now, James Marsden told ET:

Truly, this is mind-blowing to think about. I think it’s because they all came to Marvel in such different ways at such different times too.

As I mentioned, Marsden started playing Cyclops in 2000’s X-Men. He then reprised the role in 2003’s X2, 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, and 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. Between X2 and The Last Stand, he played Lon Hammond in The Notebook.

Now, 20 years after The Last Stand and 12 years after Days of Future Past, the Jury Duty star will make his long-awaited return as Scott Summers in Doomsday, which will also be his first foray into the MCU.

Rachel McAdams didn’t join the MCU until 12 years after The Notebook’s release, and that 2004 movie marked one of her first major leading roles.

Like McAdams, The Notebook was also a major breakout moment for Gosling. Now, 22 years later, after releasing “banger after banger,” as Kevin Feige would say, the Barbie star has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ghost Rider, a character he’s wanted to play for a long time.

All of them coming to Marvel made Marsden happy, and it elated me too, especially once the Enchanted actor said:

Now I have a vision of Cyclops and Ghost Rider saying “if you’re a superhero, I’m a superhero,” and that’s a very fun thing to think about. Plus, the idea of these guys reuniting with Rachel McAdams has always excited me.

Will it ever really happen? I feel like it’s a bit far-fetched. However, it is wonderful to fantasize about, and pretty soon we’ll get to see both Marsden and Gosling make their MCU entrances. So, mark your calendars, because Avengers: Doomsday will be released on the 2026 movie schedule on December 18, and then in 2028, Ghost Rider will ride on to the big screen.

Fans are constantly looking forward to upcoming Marvel movies, and wondering what actors might play beloved characters from the comics. Some fans want to see The Long Walk actor Cooper Hoffman play Cyclops in the MCU's developing X-Men movie, and now he's responded to the online chatter.

While the stars of the original X-Men movies will appear as part of the Avengers: Doomsday cast, a new group of actors will make up the team of mutants in Jake Schreier's developing X-Men flick. Hoffman has seen the rumors about him playing Cyclops, and spoke to EW about the chatter, responding with:

Despite fans wanting to see the Licorice Pizza actor rock Scott Summers' visor, it appears that Cooper Hoffman isn't actually in talks to take on the role that was famously played by both James Marsden and Tye Sheridan in Fox's X-Men films. While Hoffman's Long Walk co-star David Jonsson is playing T'Challa's son Black Panther 3, it sounds like he hasn't been in contact with the studio himself. But would he join X-Men if Marvel came calling? In the same interview he addressed this by saying:

The X-Men make up some of the most popular Marvel characters of all time, and there are plenty of actors who would love to portray one of the mutants on the big screen. Only time will tell what mutants Jake Schreier wants for his adaptation, and which actors will play those roles.

Fans who spent years watching the Marvel movies in order have been not-so-patiently waiting for the X-Men to finally join the fun. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is showing no signs of slowing down, with the studio constantly putting out new projects in theaters and streaming with a Disney+ subscription. Arguably the most highly anticipated upcoming Marvel movie is The Russo Brothers' Avengers: Doomsday, which looks like an epic crossover event. Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom, and even he was nerding out about the OG stars of the X-Men movies reprising their roles on set.

What we know about Avengers: Doomsday has been limited, but the huge list of characters has been buoying excitement. The Doomsday cast features entire teams of heroes, including the X-Men. During a conversation with EW at San Diego Comic-Con, RDJ gushed about seeing actors like Rebecca Romijn and Kesley Grammer back as their (blue) mutants. As he put it:

Talk about a glowing endorsement. Fans who spent years watching the Marvel movies in order know that the MCU started with Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man, so he's was a day one member of the shared universe. But despite being in this sandbox for nearly two decades, even the Oscar-winning actor was geeking out about working with the X-Men.

Tony Stark died at the end of Endgame, which fans assumed would be RDJ's final bow in the MCU. But that's changing with Doomsday, although he'll be playing an entirely different character and going from a hero to a villain. And fans can't wait to see how this all shakes out this winter.

Not much about the story of the next Avengers movie had been revealed yet, but the first Doomsday trailer became one of the highest-viewed trailers of all time. So despite the mysteries and Marvel's tight security, there's clearly a ton of fan excitement about the crossover event. And after seeing the above comments, that enthusiasm is clearly echoed by RDJ himself.

While we got the blockbuster's first trailer, much of the details and story of Doomsday remain a mystery to the moviegoing public. Clearly the multiverse is at play, and the teams of heroes will presumably have to unite to fight Doctor Doom and his forces.

All will be revealed when Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18th as part of the 2026 movie release list. Luckily the movie's publicity has kicked off, so hopefully we get more information about its contents sooner rather than later.

Returning to a Hollywood role after 20 years doesn't always require huge transformations for actors, but Rebecca Romijn's X-Men villainess Mystique is obviously an exception. The blue-skinned shapeshifter is back for the upcoming MCU epic Avengers: Doomsday, with Romijn retaking the reins from Jennifer Lawrence, who played the younger version in the mutants' second Fox trilogy. The actress, who's currently keeping the Star Trek franchise going strong, has shared that she wasn't required to spend quite as much time in the makeup chair for the Russos' movie, for better or worse.

Romijn's Mystique will forever remain one of the most elaborately made-up characters in cinema history, and the amount of hours she spent in the makeup chair getting her entire body turned blue and textured remains wildly impressive. She's said in the past that it was initially a 9-hour experience for the first X-Men movie, and that the team got it down to 7 hours by the time X-Men: The Last Stand came around. But that's still an entire workday for some people, and that all had to happen before she could even step in front of the camera.

It appears that particular headache, as it were, isn’t nearly as time-intensive as it was during the early years of CGI and digital effects. Speaking with EW about going blue for Doomsday, she said it was a relief to learn that she wasn’t being asked to spend a third of her working days getting paint and prosthetics. In her words:

Though she didn't seem to elaborate on that notion, one can assume she potentially meant that the Russos were not eager to wait 7+ hours for actors to get physically set up for shots, and that they were working with the mindset that any amount of costuming and character details can be digitally added into the shot during post-production. It's not the most ideal approach for audiences, since the line between practical effects and CGI remains pretty thick. But definitely good news for certain blue-skinned cast members.

It's still unknown exactly how much of Mystique fans will even get to see in Avengers: Doomsday alongside other co-stars from Fox's extended X-Men franchise, but we know from the explosive first trailer that she'll use her morphing abilities to turn into Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova at some point. (I'd love to see her turn into Thing or Johnny Storm, just to see how that would work, but I'll take whatever I can get.)

For all that she was happy to not spend nearly as long in the makeup chair as she had in the past, Rebecca Romijn explained why that extended prep time actually had a net-positive effect on her performance overall, saying:

Which doesn't necessarily mean that Mystique's return in Avengers: Doomsday will see her doing meditative yoga and showing off her Wordle skills. She still seems pretty angry on the whole, though possibly with different motivations this time around.

James Marsden is finally stepping back into Cyclops’ visor in the 2026 movie schedule release of Avengers: Doomsday. This long-hoped-for reprisal comes three decades after Marsden first started playing Scott Summers for the original X-Men. The return brings plenty of nostalgia but, as he recently told us, not every part of suiting up feels exactly as it did the first time

CinemaBlend caught up with Marsden at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend. Our own Jeff McCobb asked what felt most different about playing Cyclops again, along with what remained shockingly familiar. Marsden went straight for the easiest target: the passage of time. He explained:

Our interviewer immediately jumped in to insist that the Jury Duty a-lister still looked the same, which earned a laugh and a grateful response from the actor. He accepted the compliment, though he was not about to pretend that wearing a superhero suit today feels identical to doing it in his twenties.

His answer is funny because the Enchanted star remains one of those actors who, much like his Doomsday co-star Paul Rudd, seems to have negotiated unusually favorable terms with aging. Still, Cyclops is not exactly a forgiving role. The costume is tightly fitted, the posture is rigid and Scott Summers has traditionally carried himself as though relaxing his shoulders might trigger an international incident.

Marsden’s original run also arrived during a very different era of comic book movies. He first suited up during production on the groundbreaking comic book film, 2000’s X-Men, before interconnected universes and annual new superhero movie releases became standard studio business. Now, he is returning in a crossover that places the Fox-era mutants alongside Avengers and Fantastic Four characters.

The physical experience may feel different after nearly three decades, but the returning X-Men star said the emotional charge came rushing back as soon as he put on the costume and visor. That part of playing Cyclops, at least, has not changed. He continued:

That enthusiasm helps explain why fans have been so excited about Marsden’s return. Cyclops was a key member of the original Fox-era X-Men lineup, but those movies often pushed him aside to spend more time with Wolverine, Magneto and Professor X. Avengers: Doomsday gives Marvel another chance to show why Scott Summers is supposed to be one of the team’s central leaders.

Marvel officially confirmed Marsden's return as Cyclops alongside Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and Ian McKellen’s Magneto back in March 2025. They'll also be joined in the film by other franchise alums like Rebecca Romijn and Alan Cumming, who will reprise their roles as Mystique and Nightcrawler, respectively. The Russo brothers’ crossover reaches theaters Dec. 18, 2026.

Marsden also joined several of his Doomsday co-stars during Marvel Studios’ Comic-Con presentation, making his return feel considerably more real than a name on a cast list.

Whether Cyclops gets enough screen time to make up for the old movies remains to be seen. Marsden, however, clearly has not lost his affection for the character. His body may be filing a few more complaints, but the visor still flips the same internal switch.

The first full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday is here, and at the risk of sounding alarmist, I'm worried. While I'm excited for the upcoming Marvel movie and know it's going to make a big splash with audiences, I can't help but be concerned about the X-Men and their place in the story.

Kevin Feige already confirmed the upcoming movie is heavily influenced by two prominent comic book storylines, but I have a feeling a third is in play. Is it possible this movie is also influenced by Avengers vs. X-Men, and we're going to see an adaptation of that play out in the movie?

Why I Think Avengers: Doomsday May Be Loosely Adapting Avengers Vs. X-Men

If you watch the Avengers: Doomsday trailer clearly, one thing stands out above all else. The Avengers and the X-Men are never seen fighting alongside each other or meeting, but we see them fighting other Avengers. There's a quick shot of Gambit fighting Shang-Chi, and it also seems Mystique transforms into Yelena Belova in the midst of a battle.

It has me wondering if the X-Men are allied with Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom, and he's appealing to a cause that benefits both. Note that we see Magneto and Professor X united as equals at a table, rather than at odds. Also, Gambit and Mystique are usually on opposing sides in the comics, so why would they both be fighting the Avengers?

The Avengers vs. X-Men arc is more than just the name implies, of course, as you'd also need a character who can harness the Phoenix Force to complete that. Oh wait, isn't Sadie Sink heavily rumored to be playing Jean Grey in the MCU? You know, the same Grey who has harnessed the Phoenix Force before?

The comics had Hope Summers be the conduit to the power, but that doesn't mean the Russos and Marvel Studios couldn't take some creative liberties. To me, it feels like the table is set for Avengers: Doomsday to loosely adapt Avengers vs. X-Men, and factor in Doctor Doom to help get his story off the ground. Is it possible these mutants, and ones we haven't seen yet, are the "bad guys" in this?

I Would Sooner See That Story Told In A Separate Film, Not As The B-Plot To Service Doomsday

I would love to see Avengers vs. X-Men adapted in the MCU, but not like this. The story of the mutants being torn between saving their species and fighting The Avengers is fantastic and worthy of its own movie. I'd rather see that fleshed out in a meaningful way, rather than pared down just to fill time for Avengers: Doomsday to cross the finish line.

To be clear, I have no idea whether Avengers vs. X-Men is going to be adapted at all in Avengers: Doomsday. Regardless, I still have questions about the X-Men's involvement in the MCU overall, and how they factor into this story.

What I will say is that I've been waiting too long to see the modern iterations of the Mutants added to the MCU, and I would hate to have one of its better stories used as a B-plot when there are plenty of other ways to handle a Doctor Doom story. Unfortunately, it's all cut and in the can now, so I guess I'll just have to wait and see alongside others what this story will be about.

Avengers: Doomsday is in theaters on December 18th. I'm excited for its release for now, and hoping we get more information on what's going on with the mutants closer to its release date.

One of the biggest questions related to any upcoming Marvel movies revolves around Sadie Sink’s mysteriously unspecified new role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which the stars have been keen to troll fans over. The two biggest theories have her playing either Spidey’s comic love interest Gwen Stacey, which seems fitting, or the all-powerful Jean Grey. (With a third avenue being that she’s actually one of the film’s many villains.)

Now, it appears we can remove the mutant telepath from the rumor mill, as Spidey portrayer Tom Holland himself has shut down the notion that Jean Grey will be in Brand New Day at all. In an interview with Natalia Kreuser (via Instagram), the actor was asked point-blank about the X-Men heroine, and he didn’t even craftily attempt to beat around the bush with his answer. As he put it:

There you have it, sports fans. Tom Holland, one of the crown kings of MCU spoilers, has seemingly confirmed that Jean Grey will NOT show up during the runtime of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

I Hope Tom Holland Is Telling The Truth Here

As awesome as it would genuinely be for the MCU's revamped Jean Grey to appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it seemingly doesn't make that much sense for these characters' timelines, given the all-around lack of confirmed mutants on this Earth. That will all change with Avengers: Doomsday, which Kevin Feige pretty much explained will wipe out the timeline for Fox's X-Men characters, and then a new lineup of character will rise up to take their places for Secret Wars and beyond.

As such, it would be bizarre for the first new mutant to show up in this movie, five months before Doomsday hits. theaters, right? I think so, unless her arrival plays directly into how the storyline flips things around to set-up Spidey's eventual return in an Avengers sequel. But that just seems too messy for a movie that already has a dozen supporting characters. (O.G. Jean Grey Famke Janssen reportedly isn't in Doomsday, but I'm not sure that necessarily means anything about

Another reason I think we can hopefully trust Tom Holland here is because he's become so known for blabbing about details that others may have kept closer to the vest. And him shutting down rumors about a character's appearance is a more forgivable spoiler than if he'd come out and said exactly who Sink is playing. It's like Marvel producers gave him an olive branch by allowing him to say this one thing.

But maybe he IS lying, or is being controlled by the real Jean Grey to tell fans what she wants us to hear. Check out the interview clip below and see whether or not you think Tom Holland could be fibbing it up for the sake of the mystery.

Whether or not his scout's honor is authentic or not, fans will know for sure who Sink is playing when Spider-Man: Brand New Day swoops and whooshes through theaters on July 31, 2026

It’s somehow been almost three years since Marvel confirmed a new era of live-action X-Men adventures, and we’re still months away from seeing the mutant group’s return in full for Avengers: Doomsday. (The first full-length trailer gave us some hints of what’s to come.) With the Russo brothers’ busy helming Avengers: Secret Wars, it seems like a good time to wonder what Kevin Feige & Co. are planning to do with these beloved characters in the aftermath of these mega-sequels.

Thankfully, Marvel Studios’ big bossman offered up some solid insights into the X-Men’s future while speaking with journalists during a press event in Shanghai, China (via Weibo). He first talked about the state of things between Endgame’s release and Doomsday, while also speaking to the idea that the O.G. X-Men films were as much an organic starting point for the next couple of upcoming Marvel movies, even if that universe will likely get destroyed via incursion.

Just hearing the words "streamlined" and "simplified" coming out of Kevin Feige's mouth feel revolutionary, given how convoluted and messy things have gotten in recent years between big-screen features and TV projects streaming via Disney+ subscription. So cue all the sighs of relief on that note.

On a more downbeat note, Feige does use the phrase "bring some storylines to a close" in reference to the mutant clan, which does not bode well for any of the OG actors' characters surviving Doomsday and Secret Wars. If anyone could do it, it'd be Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, but it's possible that he'll be hanging his claws up before the next Phase kicks off.

To that end, Feige talked about the goal of bringing younger audiences into the MCU fandom, and having to look beyond just the most popular X-Men hero to make it happen.

I'd much prefer a multi-stage saga than another multiverse saga right now, so that all tracks. Although I do wonder if the plan to skew younger also applies to the aforementioned Deadpool, since Ryan Reynolds only just this week confirmed that Deadpool 4 is in the works. Will that movie feature some kind of passing-of-the-torch between Reynolds' Wade Wilson and someone else? Ehhhh.

Kevin Feige revealed that the latest studio exec meeting centered on planning the next 16 years of potential feature releases, going up to 2042. Which isn't to say that every one of those plans will play out successfully, but just in case anyone things they're sitting around and winging it.

Kevin Feige's Amusingly Simple Take On Fox's X-Men Movies

Though the goal is obviously to give fans something new with the X-Men's arrival in the MCU, Feige certainly isn't ignoring everything that came before, and I can't stop chuckling over his brevity and limited word choices when sharing opinions about Fox's entire X-Men franchise lineup. (Not that he was expected to go on at length with his critiques or anything.) As he put it:

How hilarious would it have been if Kevin Feige was seen on-camera for local news on premiere night for 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, and when asked how he liked it, he just said, "I think it hasn't lived up to expectations."

That is such a funny and diplomatic way to make an assessment like, "This was a steaming pile of dogshit." Not that I'm trying to put words in Feige's mouth or anything. Hell, maybe that was one that he really liked. (Hopefully not.) I may nip that phrasing in the future for when Secret Invasion comes up again, assuming anyone ever talks about Secret Invasion again.

As exciting as it is to think about what a future will look like with all-new mutants comprising the X-Men, director Jake Schreier told CinemaBlend how difficult rebooting things for the MCU can be, and a lot of decisions will need to be made. And we'll be here to talk about them all.

Hugh Jackman may have once had a definitive X-Men ending in Logan, but no more. Since his Deadpool & Wolverine return in 2024, it feels like it’s only a matter of time before he appears in one of the next Marvel movies. And, as of late, Jackman has been incredibly open about his gym routine. Those workout posts have, unsurprisingly, prompted fans to mention his adamantium-clawed alter ego.

In the past few weeks, Jackman has posted two videos of himself back on a workout routine of sorts. Check out this one from July 1, and try not to get winded while watching it:

Whoa, Jackman’s really putting in the work! In the video above, the movie star is seen doing pushups with massive chains around his neck. In the caption he wrote “best to stay fit” without saying why. I totally get why fans are getting suspicious of the actor returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

‘Til he’s 90! Since Hugh Jackman has already been the lead in two 2026 movie schedule entries, you know he’s already been dodging questions about whether he’s in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Jackman has been staying strong and not saying much but, back in December, he did say that his gut was telling him he’s “not done” with Wolverine.

Avengers: Doomsday will definitely have some X-Men actors in it of course. We already know for sure that Ian McKellan’s Magneto, Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and James Marsden’s Cyclops are in the December 2026 release. Additionally, Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, Rebecca Romijn's Mystique, Alan Cumming's Nightcrawler and Channing Tatum’s Gambit will also be in the movie.

There have also been all sorts of rumors as of late about A-list movie stars filling roles in upcoming X-Men reboot. Adam Driver is rumored to be the new Magneto and a report about Margot Robbie playing Mystique has also gotten around. Some people theorize that the next set of MCU films will be called “The Mutant Saga”.

Marvel Studios is returning to San Diego Comic Con for a massive Hall H panel next weekend, so it’s very possible we’ll know more about the future of X-Men in a week. Of course, that's just speculation, so I’d definitely take Hugh Jackman’s workout videos at face value (for now)!

Given Margot Robbie’s stellar performance as Harley Quinn, it's understandable as to why fans would want to see her in more superhero fare. In that regard, she's been the subject of various casting rumors over the years, even Invisible Woman chatter linked to Matt Shakman's The Fantastic Four: First Steps. It's more recently been alleged that she may make the jump from the DCU to the MCU. Obviously, nothing is set in stone as far as the general public knows but, regardless, the characters mentioned in this latest report are excellent.

Superhero movie-related rumors can definitely be wild, and this latest bit of gossip on Robbie from Main Middle Man on X fits the bill. However, I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't at least be intrigued by the notion of her playing either of the two roles mentioned:

So, first and foremost, both of these characters have ties to X-Men, which is being rebooted at Marvel Studios. The notion of Robbie playing the diamond-shelled telepath Emma Frost would make a lot of sense. The Barbie star definitely looks like the character and has the charisma needed to play her. Yet she'd also be an intriguing pick for Raven Darkhölme/Mystique, the blue, shapeshifter who's typically portrayed as Magneto's right-hand woman.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that fans have all kinds of thoughts. In terms of a potential Mystique casting, one fan, Rain, ask if she would be a “variant like how Cavill was for Wolverine?” That's a fair question, considering the MCU is still in the midst of the Multiverse Saga. It's also worth mentioning that Rebecca Romijn is reprising her role as Mystique (from the 2000s X-Men flicks) in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

There are also some fans who seem to think Margot Robbie would be a better fit for another X-Men character. A couple of users suggested she should play Rogue, who was previously played Anna Paquin on the big screen. They're particularly interested in Rogue's ability to take - and use - the powers of fellow mutants. On that note, Flashpoint56 says:

Nevertheless, there does seem to be fan-based interest in Robbie taking on the role of Raven. One fan in the comments even pitched another Marvel Special Presentation that could show Mystique giving birth to Nightcrawler. Such a project is probably a long shot but, hey, wilder things have happened right?

As far as Marvel's mutants go, I'm not sure just how many people would've expected Romijn to return for Doomsday or Alan Cumming to return to his role as Nightcrawler in that film as well. The pair will also be joined by fellow X-Men franchise alums like James Marsden, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, who are reprising, Cyclops, Professor X and Magneto, respectively.

On the whole, what seems to be very clear is that fans and scoopers are clamoring for news on the cinematic future of the X-Men. Rumors have been flying around left and right and, just this week, it was alleged that Adam Driver was in contention for Magneto in the Jake Schreier-helmed reboot.

More rumors are bound to crop up in the lead-up to the reboot, and fellow upcoming Marvel movies Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. For now, though, I like the notion of Margot Robbie joining this world and, even if she doesn't play a mutant, I'm sure there's a place for her within the franchise.

Marvel Studios has not yet introduced the MCU’s new X-Men lineup, but the internet has already started casting actors in capes and helmets. The latest mutant casting rumor places Adam Driver beneath Magneto’s familiar headgear for the highly anticipated Marvel films, and two pieces of fan art make a surprisingly convincing case for the Star Wars actor as the Master of Magnetism.

Popular fan art maestro BossLogic shared his interpretation on Instagram, noting that the casting was still only a rumor he “wanted to try out.” The artwork, which you can see below, gives Driver long silver hair, a dark red suit and a flowing purple cape, with Magneto’s helmet floating beside him as scraps of metal twist through the air.

The art is dramatic, moody and just close enough to Kylo Ren to make the comparison unavoidable. But, where exactly are these rumors coming from?

Where Did The Adam Driver As Magneto Rumor Come From?

The chatter began after scooper MyTimeToShineHello claimed Driver had been cast as the villain in Marvel’s X-Men reboot. The post did not name a character, but another online source, Apocalyptic Horseman, responded that the Marriage Story star would play Magneto. The report remains unconfirmed, and Marvel has not announced the Girls alum as part of the movie.

So this belongs in the rumor pile. Driver has been linked to Marvel roles before, including Reed Richards during the long Fantastic Four casting process, so his name appearing in another round of MCU speculation is hardly shocking. Still, Magneto feels more plausible than some of the other possibilities. The actor is particularly good at playing wounded men whose convictions harden into something frightening. And, with two new pieces of fan art to visualize how it could look, I'm seeing it more and more.

The Fan Art Makes A Strong Case For The Casting

BossLogic’s image emphasizes Magneto’s destructive power, but artist Spdrmnkyxxiii took a more regal approach. The second design places the Kylo Ren performer in the classic red-and-purple colors, seated behind Magneto’s helmet with glowing eyes and the posture of someone deciding whether the room deserves to remain standing.

Both images understand that Magneto needs more than a recognizable costume. Ian McKellen brought weary authority to the role, and we get to see him one more time in the 2026 movie schedule release of Avengers: Doomsday, while Michael Fassbender played Erik Lehnsherr with anger that always seemed ready to split the screen. Driver has the height, voice and bruised intensity to follow them without simply copying either performance.

There is a possible downside, though. After Kylo Ren, casting Driver as another gifted, emotionally scarred antagonist dressed in dark colors might feel a little too familiar. Magneto would need to become more than Kylo, with better posture and a bit more control over his anger.

What We Know About Jake Schreier’s X-Men Reboot

Thunderbolts* filmmaker Jake Schreier is directing Marvel’s new X-Men movie. He has described the material as complex and suggested the reboot will look recognizably different from the previous Fox franchise. Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear co-showrunner Joanna Calo are working on the screenplay, although Marvel has not announced the cast or a release date for the upcoming Marvel movie.

Kevin Feige has also described the project as youth-focused, which raises questions about where an established actor such as Driver would fit. Magneto could remain older than the core team, of course, giving the younger mutants a formidable ideological opponent rather than another classmate.

For now, the artwork is doing far more work than the evidence. Yet if The Man Who Killed Don Quixote lead eventually walks onto a Comic-Con stage holding that helmet, fans will already know the look works.

Superhero movies might be everywhere nowadays, but the X-Men movies hit theaters prior to shared universes becoming commonplace. That franchise (which is streaming with a Disney+ subscription) was a big risk at the time, although the movies are still regularly re-watched to this day. Halle Berry recently posted to celebrate X-Men's anniversary, and I'm still really hoping she ends up in the cast of Avengers: Doomsday.

What we know about Avengers: Doomsday has been limited, but fans are hyped that a number of OG X-Men stars will reprise their roles. Unfortunately, Halle Berry isn't expected to be included, although her Twitter post celebrating the 2000 movie is turning heads. She included a promo photo of her as Storm, with the caption reading:

While Alexandra Shipp played the role in two of the final X-Men movies, Halle Berry is the quintessential Storm for many fans who spent years watching the Marvel movies in order. And her post about the movie's anniversary has fans (including me) hoping she'll end up with a role in Doomsday after all.

Halle Berry may have denied having a role in the next Avengers movie, but that hasn't stopped fans from holding out hope. In fact, the comments section to her viral Storm tweet is filled with fans wishing for just that. Some responses read:

• posting this the same day doomsday ticket date announced- do you have something to share with the class?
• Could this be a hint that she'll return as Storm?
• Storm is an absolute legend. Thank you for bringing her to life all those years ago, Halle. Still iconic 26 years later
• I still wish for Storm to return in Doomsday
• I sense something suspicious. Are you in doomsday?

Clearly there is a ton of love for Halle Berry's run as Storm to this day, despite her last performance being in 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past. And fans are keeping their fingers crossed that the Oscar-winning actress will end up appearing in Avengers: Doomsday after all.

While Berry denied having a role in the next Avengers movie, that hasn't stopped the online discourse about her possible return as Storm. After all, fans have been deceived to by comic book actors before. Case in point: Andrew Garfield lied about his Spider-Man: No Way Home role for about a year before the movie hit theaters.

We'll just have to wait and see if Storm pops up when Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18th as part of the 2026 movie release list. And with Jake Schreier's X-Men movie in development, only time will tell if a new Storm actress ends up taking the mantle of the Omega Level Mutant.

Mike Flanagan’s upcoming Carrie series was always going to need more story. Namely because Stephen King’s debut novel is short, the prom has already been burned into pop culture by Brian De Palma’s 1976 movie, and Prime Video ordered eight episodes rather than another two-hour page-to-screen adaptation. Flanagan has earned plenty of trust with King material, but the first details about how he plans to expand Carrie White’s world have given me pause. Honestly, it just sounds too much like X-Men.

In Entertainment Weekly’s first look at Carrie, Flanagan explained that the series will explore the science behind telekinesis and connect its title character to other women with similar abilities. If you've read all of Stephen Kings books like I have, you know the material has roots in his novel, but the showrunner’s description sounds much closer to the foundation of a new superhero movie mythology than the intimate horror story I associate with Carrie. Flanagan explained:

There is something compelling buried in that idea. King’s novel includes reports, testimony and scientific speculation surrounding what happened in Chamberlain, Maine. Previous movies largely discarded that material to stay close to Carrie, Margaret White and the approaching disaster at prom. A streaming series has room to recover pieces that never fit comfortably into those films.

Still, words such as “gene,” “larger universe” and “gifted women” set off my superhero alarm. Put them together, and the upcoming horror series begins to sound less like a frightened teenager discovering something impossible and more like a mutant who has not yet found Professor Xavier’s school. The powers in Carrie should feel isolating and dangerous. Turning them into membership in a secret supernatural sorority risks making the character less singular.

My concern grew when Flanagan revealed that, beginning with Episode 2, each installment will open with a different woman somewhere else in the world and at another point in time discovering her abilities. That could become a clever series of miniature horror stories. It could also feel like the Carrie series keeps leaving Carrie to build lore for a larger mythology.

Upon hearing this, my mind immediately went to Stranger Things 2 and “The Lost Sister,” the divisive episode that sent Eleven to meet another powered test subject. The concept made sense within the show, but the detour felt to many viewers like a backdoor pilot interrupting the story they were already invested in. Carrie introducing a new gifted woman every week could create a similar problem if those segments begin to resemble a setup for a telekinetic team-up.

In my opinion, Carrie White does not need mentors, a mythology lesson or a broader mission. Her story works because she is unprepared for both her abilities and the cruelty around her. The horror comes from watching years of abuse and humiliation collide with power she cannot control.

Flanagan may still pull this off. I mean, I have faith as he's created some of my favorite horror movies and series in recent memory. King reportedly approved the new approach and serves as an executive producer, while Flanagan’s previous adaptations have shown how dramatically he can reshape source material without losing its emotional core. For now, though, the “TK gene” is the first Carrie detail that worries me. I want a tragedy soaked in blood, not the opening chapter of the Telekinetic Cinematic Universe.

Carrie is expected to premiere on Prime Video's 2026 streaming schedule in the fall for subscribers with a Prime Video subscription.

The horror genre has been thriving for years now, to the delight of fans like me. Obsession became a wild box office success this year, and has made household names out of its cast, especially Nikki actress Inde Navarrette. She recently confirmed she met with director Jake Schreier, who will helm the new X-Men movie. And fans think they know which mutants she could play in that upcoming Marvel movie.

After Obsession's insane success, moviegoers are curious about what's next for Navarrette, and if she'll be recognized during Awards Season like Weapons' Amy Madigan. During an interview with Nylon, the 25-year-old actress was asked if she'd do a Marvel movie, responding with:

She also confirmed to the outlet that she's already met with Jake Schreier, who directed Thunderbolts* and will once again be behind the camera for the developing X-Men movie. This news turned heads for fans who spent years watching the Marvel movies in order and can't wait for mutants to finally take center stage.

A thread over on Reddit responded to the news that Navarrette met with Schreier, with folks sounding off about which X-Men character they think she'd be great playing. The responses read as follows:

• ​Inde is my top choice to play Mystique. The woman has a REALLY expressive face that could portray a lot of great emotion even with the makeup.
• She would definitely make a great Laura Kinney.
• I'd rather they keep Dafne Keen who's just 21 as Laura in the reseted universe and cast Navarrette as Kitty Pride.
• Shes Psylocke for me.

Clearly there's a ton of love for the X-Men, and fans are hyped about the idea of Inde Navarrette joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We'll just have to wait and see if she actually joins the cast of Schreier's developing blockbuster, and if any of the above casting guesses end up being legit.

Out of the four characters listed above, I think I'm most inclined to see Navarrette as Mystique. She was basically playing two characters in Obsession, which shows how transformative she can be. Of course, she'd have some big shoes to fill thanks to the role previously being played by Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Lawrence. Although I could honestly see her as X-23, Psylocke, or Kitty Pride as well. Talk about versatility.

For years, mutants were noticeably missing in the MCU, but Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox finally opened the door for the X-Men to join the fun. Since then, characters have been used here and there, and the OG actors from Fox's franchise will appear in the next Avengers movie. But Schreier is expected to bring in a new group of actors for his movie.

It's currently unclear when the X-Men movie will hit theaters, but a handful of mutants will appear in Avengers: Doomsday on December 18th as part of the 2026 movie release list. As for Obsession, it's available for rent or home purchase now and will arrive on Peacock on July 17th.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for constantly releasing developing and releasing new titles, both in theater and streaming with a Disney+ subscription. While fans are hyped for upcoming Marvel movies, there are countless rumors about what Kevin Feige and company are planning. And a new report claims he wants Anya Taylor-Joy for a role that'll please longtime X-Men fans.

Folks who spent years watching the Marvel movies in order will recall how the X-Men movies lasted from 2000 to 2020, with the final chapter being Josh Boone's The New Mutants. That movie featured an ensemble cast including Maisie Williams and Anya Taylor-Joy, and a rumor posted on MTTSH's Twitter claims that the latter might be reprising her role in the MCU. It reads:

Honestly, take my money. Because while I'm hyped for mutants to finally join the fun as part of the cast of Avengers: Doomsday as well as in the developing X-Men movie, it would be awesome to see the Queen's Gambit actress get the chance to play Illyana Nikolaievna Rasputina / Magik again on the big screen. She crushed it the first time, despite the movie being released mid-pandemic and being a box office bomb.

Of course, this is just a rumor at this point, one we should probably take with a giant grain of salt. There are countless rumors about the future of the MCU, and not all of them can be true. But it would stand to reason if Kevin Feige wanted to get the Emmy-nominated actress in the shared universe.

While the X-Men were left out of the MCU for its first few phases, Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox and its properties finally allowed mutants to be brought in. That's a big reason why the previous franchise ended with The New Mutants, and it would be a full circle moment if Anya Taylor-Joy got to reprise her role within the shared universe.

Magick has a long history in the comics, and Anya Taylor-Joy crushed the character's signature attitude and fighting style. She's also the sister of the X-Man Colossus, and fans have been hoping to see these two mutants together on the big screen. So if Kevin Feige actually wants the Split actress to play her again, maybe that's what'll happen. Only time will tell if this rumor ends up being legit.

The New Mutants is streaming now on Disney+. The next Marvel movie hitting theaters is Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31st as part of the 2026 movie release list. As or Anya Taylor-Joy, she's got a number of exciting projects coming down the line including Dune: Part Three.

At long last, X-Men ‘97 Season 2’s premiere is about to hit the 2026 TV schedule and reacquaint fans with Charles Xavier and his band of mutant do-gooders. Teasers for the new episodes seem to indicate that fans are in for a fun and emotional ride, which will feature plenty of En Sabah Nur (a.k.a. Apocalypse). While the hype amongst fans of the legacy sequel series still seems to be intact, it’s still hard to believe its hiatus has been so lengthy. Well, like I am, fans may be eager to know the creative team has learned some lessons.

X-Men ‘97’s first season premiered back in March 2024 and, at that time, it was already reported that a second season was in the works. So those new installments are now coming more than two years after Season 1, which is definitely a long stretch of time. But fear not, true believers, as EP Larry Houston shared some good news in regard to the upcoming third season, which was announced this past fall. Fans should not expect long breaks between future seasons, and Houston explained the reason for that to The Direct:

Houston – who produced X-Men: The Animated Series (the direct predecessor of ‘97) – didn’t specify the nature of those “production problems.” However, it’s possible that he may have been alluding to the firing of series creator and ex-showrunner/writer Beau DeMayo. Shortly before Season 1 debuted, DeMayo was let go after an investigation into his workplace conduct. That not only led to a feud between DeMayo and Marvel Studios, but he was also replaced with Matthew Chauncey, leading to episodes also being rewritten.

Given the behind-the-scenes changes, I can understand the gap between Seasons 1 and 2. Still, I’m more than relieved that fans like myself won’t have to wait as long for the third and fourth seasons to arrive down the road. Lengthy hiatuses have unfortunately become a common element within this streaming-dominated entertainment landscape, and that applies to both live-action and animated shows. While it’s understandable that obstacles arise and that production can take time, I’m glad to see a creative team making it a goal to produce new seasons as swiftly as possible.

What’s made the wait for this new season of the critically acclaimed X-Men ’97 particularly excruciating is the fact that there are some key storylines that need to be resolved. The ‘97 Season 1 finale ends with Professor X and co. getting scattered across different time periods, while only a handful of their cohorts remain in the present. The episode also sets up the return of the aforementioned Apocalypse, and it seems to subtly hint at the resurrection of Gambit as one of his Horsemen.

Fans seem to have high hopes for this latest crop of episodes and, hopefully, the collective season will live up to the hype of its predecessor. And, if that does prove to be the case, at the end of the season, fans will be able to take comfort in knowing that the wait for future episodes won’t be too long.

No one could have predicted that Hugh Jackman would still be playing Wolverine 26 years after the original X-Men movie. It never occurred to me as a kid that I’d still be seeing the same actors as my favorite characters when I became an adult. But spotting Jackman in different Marvel projects always makes my younger self so happy. Who else remembers him showing up in First Class with an epic one-liner? He instantly steals the scene every time.

So it’s not surprising that the actor would be reluctant to see anyone else take up the claws. With the multiverse, there is a real probability of seeing another actor playing Wolverine. We did see Henry Cavill's cameo in Deadpool and Wolverine as a variant of the character. And if we can see Superman do it, anything is possible. But I love that when Jackman was asked about that very topic by ProjectBigScreen, he responded with an A+ Deadpool joke while he weighed in on the possibility of being replaced:

I expected nothing less from Jackman. The actor making the role his own is why fans haven’t stopped piling on the Wolverine hype. I wouldn’t be shocked if we see him show up, even in a cameo, in Doomsday. But I would be excited regardless, especially if it was a reunion with James Marsden. Scott and Logan notoriously butted heads over Jean in the early 2000s films, and a little wink to that would make my X-Men loving heart so happy.

I already felt like I had won when Aaron Stanford briefly returned as Pyro in Deadpool and Wolverine, but to learn that other X-Men 2 actors would be coming back for the next Avengers? It’s almost too good to be true. The second X-Men was one of my favorite movies growing up, even if the set was rife with drama, so having Alan Cumming back as Nightcrawler feels like a gift. And I would love to see Jackman reunite with any of his former castmates. However, the actor has been hilariously dodging questions about returning as Wolverine in Doomsday. Though the actor doesn't seem ready to let the character go any time soon. He referenced a joke from his last movie when explaining:

I don't think anyone would mind if Jackman played the role until he's 90. Then maybe we'll be ready to see the character go to someone else. For now, I’m excited to see where the multiverse is going to take us. We have many confirmed returns, including the shocking Robert Downey Jr. come back as Doctor Doom. The character was previously played by Charmed’s Julian McMahon in the underrated Fantastic Four movies in the early 2000s.

While we patiently wait for Doomsday to hit theaters in December 2026, we can check Jackman out in The Sheep Detectives available to stream on Amazon and the polarizing Death of Robin Hood in theaters. But while we see the actor taking up different mantels, that doesn't mean we can't all hope to see him back with his Wolverine hair and claws.... and maybe wish for a reunion or two.

Dwayne Johnson a wrestler turned actor who has become a bankable movie star, bringing his hulking physicality to each role. During an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Jackman confirmed he went to The Rock for advice on getting fit for Wolverine. He told the story by saying the following:

Honestly, this sounds like a pretty cool moment. While Dwayne Johnson offering fitness advice is already a pinch-me moment, the fact that he put his filming schedule aside to help Hugh Jackman is even more thrilling. Clearly it's something that has stuck with the Greatest Showman star, who looks thoroughly yoked every time he plays Wolverine. I guess we have to thank The Rock for helping him get there.

The Tooth Fairy was released back in 2010, in the earlier days of Johnson's tenure as an A-list movie star. By that point Jackman has already starred in the original X-Men trilogy, and wanted to get especially jacked for his Wolverine spinoffs. As fans know, that's exactly what happened. During the same interview, the 57 year-old star of stage and film shared how The Rock made fun of him while offering some nutritional tips. In his words:

Those who follow the Moana actor's social media might not be too surprised by this. Dwayne Johnson regularly posts his cheat meals, and they're absolutely massive ones that usually involve a ton of sweets and overflowing plates. It sounds like Jackman didn't get the memo at first... until The Rock made fun of him and encouraged him to swing harder.

Jackman has been open about how many calories he eats to stay superhero fit, and it seems like Johnson helped him find that winning combination. Now we just need to get these two actors on screen together.

Hugh Jackman's time as Wolverine is streaming over on Disney+. Fans are hoping to see him reprise his role in upcoming Marvel movies, particularly the next two Avengers movies. If he does, smart money says he'll be looking jacked and having some wild cheat meals.

We’ve seen several movies over the years that show us a reimagining of a character or story we thought we knew, and A24's The Death of Robin Hood is set to hit the 2026 movie calendar to do just that with the titular outlaw. On the opposite end of the spectrum that gave us animated foxes and men in tights is Hugh Jackman’s brutal version of the legendary archer. What I'm especially excited about, though, are critics' comparisons to another Jackman movie.

The Death of Robin Hood violently shoots down the familiar image of a man who stole from the rich to give to the poor, instead painting the protagonist as a wounded man who’s now grappling with a life spent satisfying an insatiable bloodlust. It’s not unlike what we saw from Hugh Jackman in Logan, Brandon David Wilson of RogerEbert says in his review of The Death of Robin Hood, down to his being forced to care for a little girl. The critic rates it 3.5 out of 4 stars, writing:

Jim Vejvoda of IGN gives it a “Good” 7 out of 10 for an astonishing cast that includes Jodie Comer, Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett and Noah Jupe, gory kills and artsy drama from writer/director Michael Sarnoski. However, the “Logan of Robin Hood movies,” as the critic calls it, is more niche and less accessible than Sarnoski’s previous two projects — Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One. Vejvoda writes:

Guy Lodge of Variety says The Death of Robin Hood is “exquisitely crafted and emotionally intelligent” but almost wears its dourness as a badge of honor. He continues:

Jacob Oller of AV Club gives it a C and says it’s more than Hugh Jackman’s wild facial hair that likens The Death of Robin Hood to Logan, as it follows in the trend of eating away at the fables that brought us to the characters in the first place, just like Jackman did with Wolverine in Logan. Oller says:

Kristy Puchko of Mashable also notes several similarities between The Death of Robin Hood and Logan, but says in the upcoming A24 movie, Hugh Jackman’s character has less rage and therefore less energy. The attempt to rewrite this centuries-old character is “bleak, brutal, and boring” with “truly repulsive onscreen violence.” Puchko says:

While the critics don’t all agree, the reviews of Death of Robin Hood seem to be mostly positive, as so far it’s earned a 73% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. It definitely sounds like an interesting story — if one we’ve seen Hugh Jackman portray before — but how good audiences are going to feel afterward remains to be seen.

Sydney Sweeney has already stepped into the wider Marvel orbit once with 2024’s punching-bag Madame Web, but a rumor suggests she may get another shot at a new superhero movie. And this time, if the chatter is even close to accurate, the fit could be much more interesting.

According to SuperHeroHype, industry scooper MyTimeToShineHello recently claimed Sweeney is being eyed for a role in Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men reboot. The outlet notes that Marvel has not confirmed the claim, and neither she nor the studio has publicly addressed it, so this should be treated as a rumor with a giant comic-book-sized grain of salt. Still, it follows earlier speculation that Marvel was interested in the in-demand actress for Emma Frost, which is where things get especially fun.

The Rumor Is Still Very Unconfirmed

The big thing here is that nothing is official. Marvel has not announced any actors for X-Men, and we do not even have a full cast of announced mutants for the reboot yet. The project is reportedly in development with Jake Schreier attached to direct, while Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo are reportedly writing the screenplay. But Marvel is still keeping the mutant cards close to the vest.

That said, the timing makes sense. The MCU is inching closer to properly bringing the X-Men into the fold, and fan casting has been running wild for years. After the Fox-era mutants dominated the big screen for more than two decades and are rumored to be making a swan song in Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel has a tricky job ahead: find actors who can make these characters feel familiar yet stand on their own.

Sweeney would certainly bring attention. She is one of the most talked-about actors of her generation, with Euphoria, The White Lotus, Anyone But You and a growing list of film projects behind her. She also knows what it feels like to be attached to a new Marvel movie, even if it's not in the official MCU, that becomes the internet’s punchline, given her role in Sony’s Madame Web.

Emma Frost Feels Like The Obvious Fit

If Marvel really is circling Sweeney, Emma Frost feels like the cleanest match. The character has all the ingredients that would play to her strengths: glamour, menace, intelligence, vulnerability and the ability to weaponize a room without raising her voice. Emma is not just “the pretty telepath in white.” She is a former villain, a teacher, a strategist and one of the most complicated figures in X-Men lore.

That kind of role would let Sweeney lean into the icy, polished exterior she can play so well, while also giving her room to show the bruises underneath. Her best performances often work because she can make a character seem both controlled and quietly unraveling. That is basically Emma Frost’s emotional operating system.

It's not like Emma would be making her big-screen debut. The character has already appeared twice in Fox's X-Men movies. She had a brief appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which, let's just say, is not exactly remembered as the franchise's finest hour. Then January Jones played a version of the character in X-Men: First Class. While I love that movie overall, Jones' Emma never quite clicked for me, making her one of the few weak spots in an otherwise terrific film. In other words, Emma Frost feels like a character that could absolutely benefit from another shot.

There are other possibilities, of course:

• Polaris — Magneto's daughter with magnetic powers who often brings a more emotionally complicated perspective to mutant politics.
• Dazzler — A pop star who converts sound into light and energy blasts, making her one of Marvel's strangest celebrity superheroes.
• Spiral — A six-armed sorceress and master strategist with deep ties to the X-Men's weirder cosmic stories.
• Sage — A mutant with computer-like mental abilities who serves as one of the X-Men's most underrated intelligence experts.
• Boom-Boom — A rebellious prankster who creates explosive energy spheres and brings a chaotic edge to any team.
• Stacy X — A former mutant entertainer whose pheromone-based powers make her one of the franchise's most unconventional characters.

Still, Emma is the one that feels like the cleanest fit without needing to reinvent the character.

This Could Be A Better Marvel Lane Than Madame Web

The funny thing is that the Anyone but You actress has technically already been in a Marvel-based movie, but Madame Web was not part of the MCU and did not give her much of a real superhero runway. That film became more famous for the memes than for launching its characters.

An MCU X-Men role would be a very different situation. The mutants are some of Marvel’s richest characters, and the reboot will almost certainly be treated as a major pillar of the franchise going forward. If The Housemaid star gets the right role, she would not just be joining another superhero movie. She could be stepping into a character with real staying power.

Again, this is all rumor for now. Marvel may go in a completely different direction, and Sydney Sweeney may never end up near the X-Mansion. But if the studio is actually looking at her for the mutant corner of the MCU, I get it.

There are plenty of reasons why the X-Men movies of the 2000s remain beloved amongst superhero devotees, and something that audiences still talk about is the superb ensemble cast. Some fans may not be aware, though, that there was a bit of strife amid the making of the films, particularly with regard to the second installment. I’ve personally been aware of the drama that unfolded on set, but what I didn’t realize is that “trauma” played a role in at least some of the cast staying in touch over the years.

Someone who worked on the X2 set was Alan Cumming, who made his franchise debut as Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler in Bryan Singer’s 2003 superhero sequel. Cumming’s performance has since been praised, and Singer’s movie received high praise and amassed some significant box office receipts. However, as Cumming alluded to via comments he shared with People, he and his co-stars remain linked by more than the success of that comic book flick:

Some have said that the notion of trauma bonding is quite real, but I’m still surprised Cumming would want to stay connected with his co-stars over what he previously described as a less-than-positive work experience. However, when I think about it, I guess it makes sense since his co-stars apparently weren’t what made the film shoot tough. With Cumming reprising his role alongside some of his co-stars in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, he spoke about his standing with them and whether they were on set together:

During the last decade or so, some X-Men cast members have opened up about what it was like working on some of those films, specifically the ones helmed by Singer. Many of those details seem to pertain to X2. For his part, Cumming claimed that Singer (who apparently banned comic books on the set of the OG film) would deride the cast on set, leading to issues with some of the other actors. Cumming specifically remembered Halle Berry having problems with Singer, and she eventually confronted the filmmaker as a result.

On top of all that, there came a point at which the actors apparently threatened to quit the movie if producer Tom DeSanto was barred from the set by Singer. DeSanto notably called for filming to be halted after Hugh Jackman sustained a stunt-related injury. So, needless to say, the X2 set was quite tumultuous based on the anecdotes shared by the cast.

The few details that the X-Men stars have shared about working on Joe and Anthony Russo’s Doomsday, though, suggest that the experience has been much better this time around. Cumming revealed he initially thought he was being pranked when Marvel Studios called, though he was happy to reprise Nightcrawler. The really “great” part for him was not having to be in the makeup chair as long to play the blue character. Cumming seemed to have a blast, even though he apparently injured co-star Pedro Pascal during a scene.

While the X-Men cast may hold onto that shared “trauma” years after making those early films, I’m hopeful that their experience on Marvel’s highly anticipated team-up flick will give them some better memories to bond over. It’s hard to think of another 2026 release that has sparked the gobsmackingly large number of fan theories and assumptions that the upcoming Marvel movie Avengers: Doomsday has. From its earliest days with Kang in the mix to the heavily revamped approach that brought the Russo brothers back into the fold, the MCU’s next mega-blockbuster will no doubt keep fans guessing until it’s officially out. Assuming Kevin Feige doesn’t spoil the whole shebang, that is.

Okay, so that’s just farcical, since Kevin Feige is generally Marvel’s biggest enforcer of keeping franchise secrets intact. But he’s not entirely immune to hyping up future projects, including what’ll likely be the biggest release of 2026. When the studio head honcho spoke with Fandango (as seen in this X clip), his own fandom crept through his comments while speaking to the X-Men’s official MCU introduction as a full group. As he put it:

The biggest takeaway from this comment is obviously the implication that Anthony and Joe Russo had the crew rebuild multiple sets (or parts of them) from Bryan Singer’s 2000 X-Men film, as a way of visually bridging the gap between Fox’s mutant saga and the MCU.To be fair, many fans probably already gathered that to be true just from the Professor X and Magneto Doomsday teaser, with interiors from his lavish mansion on display.

But what about other familiar locations? Feige implied Avengers: Doomsday will feature multiple scenes taking place within sets central to X-Men films even beyond that first entry. (Here’s hoping everyone just forgot The Last Stand existed during that part of the process.) I’m guessing we’ll see a similar take on Cerebro, and it would presumably make sense for the Russos to rebuild the Alkali Lake complex where the Weapons X experiments took place. (Assuming the impending X-Men standalone feature from Jake Schreier also shares some of those previously set up details.)

For a comparison, Feige referenced Deadpool and Wolverine finally putting Hugh Jackman in the yellow costume that fans clamored for years for, which Singer & Co. wanted to avoid entirely for being too cartoonish. As he put it:

For all the acclaim and fan-love aimed at Fox's X-Men movies, fans' biggest complaints often circled around the lack of comic-specific costumes in favor of all things black and leathery. He made the excellent note that the look of James Marsden's Cyclops is aligned with the source material, and it sounds like fans will finally get to see the mutant squad's traditional looks in live action for the first time. Even though I'm perfectly fine with adaptations taking artistic license with details like costuming, hairstyles and the like, I cannot WAIT to see how the X-Men look in Avengers: Doomsday and beyond.

Especially Alan Cumming's Nightcrawler and Jim Lee's Rogue costume. (Not that Rogue or actress Anna Paquin have been confirmed to appear in Doomsday, but I'm still hopeful.)

Despite being namechecked earlier, fans probably shouldn't expect to see Deadpool in Avengers: Doomsday, but I'm as hopeful as anyone that Hugh Jackman is bringing his A-game once more as Wolverine, where his Aussie-Canadian accent can sit prettily alongside Channing Tatum's Alabama-Cajun accent as Gambit.

When it comes to upcoming Marvel movies on the way, the franchise’s impending future feels more blurry than ever. Of course, we know we have Avengers: Doomsday to look forward to this holiday season and Avengers: Secret Wars the year after that, but we have so many questions about what new blood will be part of the next phase of the MCU, including through the X-Men movie. But, I like one rumor going around.

We know that Thunderbolts* filmmaker Jake Schreier is behind the untitled X-Men reboot and recently he told us that he’s been discussing how to do “something that feels new” with the beloved comic book title. And, certainly casting the right talent who can bring new layers and audiences to characters we’ve seen before is one way you could do that. That’s why I’m so high on the new rumor going around that Euphoria’s Hunter Schafer is in the running for the role of Mystique.

The rumor comes from a scooper on X, who says the 27-year-old is “still being considered” for the reboot. If this casting tidbit comes true, Schafer would be following Rebecca Romijn from the original films and Jennifer Lawrence’s version from the prequels. The role would once again go to a blonde-haired beauty, but it feels like there’s to be more room with her to explore the inherent androgyny of the comic book character should the role be played by the transgender actor, model and activist.

I also think there’s a certain softness to Schafer that doesn’t quite feel like the other Mystique actors that could be interesting to see from the shapeshifter, too. Rather than being the enigmatic bombshell that the character is often portrayed as, I think she could offer a new shade to the character for a new generation.

Hunter Schafer has been constantly incredible on Euphoria as Rue since the HBO series premiered back in 2019, and yet, it feels like she hasn’t had a lot of chances to take up space in another high profile role aside from Euphoria since. She did have a small part in the YA action franchise Hunger Games: The Ballad Songbirds and Snakes, but it feels like she’s often fan casted more than she’s cast in the big roles we want to see her in. People were also hoping to see her in the Zelda movie along with Gwen Stacy in the Spider-Man movies with Tom Holland (per Reddit).

Hunter Schafer’s name isn’t the only name we’ve heard in association with the mysterious X-Men reboot, other names that have come up have been Marty Supreme’s Odessa A’zion for Rogue, The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Peter Claffey as Beast, Sadie Sink for Jean Grey and Sydney Sweeney for Emma Frost. I can’t wait for the day when Marvel Studios confirms the casting for this movie, because a new iteration of the mutants could really bring new excitement to the MCU.

It's no secret that the comic book genre is wildly popular, but there was a time when this wasn't the case. Before share universes like the MCU (which is streaming with a Disney+ subscription) there was Bryan Singer's 2000 X-Men movie. Bill Mechanic was the chairman and CEO of Fox Filmed Entertainment at the time, and recently revealed some wild feedback about the movie he got from execs. And I can't stop laughing given what we know now about the genre.

Fans who spent years watching the Marvel movies in order will recall that The X-Men movies came about before shared universes were commonplace, and they were a huge gamble. After all, the movies were expensive and had the herculean task of bringing the comics to life. In an interview with Business Insider, Mechanic revealed how folks from Fox originally responded to the project, offering:

Pardon me while I LOL. Because as we know, there have been a ton of Marvel movies in the decades since X-Men was released, including the 37 titles that have come out of the MCU (so far). So the answer is to that question about "why" is very clear: because audiences would eat it right up. The shared universe has given of signs of slowing down, with a number upcoming Marvel movies arriving this year including Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday.

In the end the X-Men franchise would keep going for nearly two decades, with the final chapter being Simon Kinberg's Dark Phoenix in 2019. Clearly the OG movie's haters were wrong, and they learned their lesson now that superhero projects are all over both TV and film.

While I was bummed when a report claimed Hugh Jackman's Wolverine wouldn't be included, we may have a logical reason why. Let's break it all down.

What we know about the X-Men movie is limited, but fans are hyped to finally see the group of heroes take center stage in the MCU. The movie will reportedly feature a younger group of mutants, which may be why Jackman is being left out. But a new report by scooper MTTSH claimed that a ton of movies surrounding mutants. If this ends up being legit, it would make me feel better about Wolverine seemingly not joining the X-Men movie. Because after Deadpool & Wolverine's record-breaking success in theaters, it seemed inevitable that Hugh Jackman would be back as Logan. But if there's going to be an entire saga about mutants, that would give the Greatest Showman actor the chance to reprise his signature role in other projects besides Schreier's developing blockbuster.

Shawn Levy's movie allowed the 57-year-old actor to be a total badass as the clawed mutant, but also told a moving story about failure and grief. And while he might not fit in with a young group of new X-Men, I'm relieved that there are reportedly other opportunities for him to play that iconic role again.

Obviously, this is all just rumors at this point, so we'll have to wait for some official news from the studio. Either way, fans are hyped that the X-Men are finally joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There have indeed been plenty of X-Men movies, several of which have been acclaimed by both critics and fans. With that, there’s certainly some pressure when it comes to putting a brand-new spin on characters that have been around for over 50 years. Still, Schreier seems to have a lot of reverence for what’s come before, and it sounds like he and his team are also asking themselves the right questions while prepping their upcoming superhero movie:

Although precise details on the MCU’s X-Men movie are still scarce, I’m excited by the fact that Jake Schreier is aiming to deliver something fresh. It’s true that the Marvel’s mutants have an expansive tapestry of lore all their own, and it makes sense that Schreier would want to tap into material that’s yet to be highlighted on the big screen. I’m particularly confident in Schreier’s direction due to his work on the well-received Thunderbolts*, and he previously said that movie helped him overcome the “learning curve” of balancing action and character moments.

That last point will be incredibly important for fans to believe in the camaraderie and strife that unfolds amongst the various members of Charles Xavier's team. I’m looking forward to seeing what Jake Schreier, producer Kevin Feige and their colleagues do with the beloved mutants. Here’s hoping they succeed in crafting something that truly feels new.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a well-oiled machine, one that consistently puts out new content in theaters and streaming with a Disney+ subscription. There are a ton of upcoming Marvel movies in development, including Jake Schreier's X-Men film. And a new rumor about that film is that a major member of the team won't be included: Wolverine. Although I honestly get the logic.

Fans who spent years watching the Marvel movies in order have been not-so-patiently waiting for mutants to join the fun. Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox finally opened the door for this, but the studio hasn't rushed to get out a new X-Men movie. According to scooper MTTSH (via CBM), the Thunderbolts* director isn't going to include Wolverine in his developing blockbuster. I have to assume this is thanks to the legacy of Hugh Jackman as that character, a role that he's still playing to this day.

Finding another actor to replace Jackman as Wolverine seems like a herculean task, as he's become synonymous with Logan over the years. He returned to the role in Shawn Levy's Deadpool & Wolverine, which broke records at the box office. So it's probably a smart choice to keep the clawed mutant out of the developing X-Men movie, which also allows the Greatest Showman actor to play it sometime in the future.

Deadpool 3 joked that Hugh Jackman would be playing Wolverine until he's 90 years old, and while that's an exaggeration the sentiment isn't wrong. The threequel was a huge success, largely thanks to the 57 year-old actor returning to his signature character. Marvel likely wants to keep him around, but he wouldn't necessarily fit in with a younger group of mutants in the developing X-Men movie.

If another actor was cast as Wolverine they'd have some huge shoes to fill. So if this rumor about the X-Men movie leaving Logan out is true, it does make sense. Although there are some popular fan castings for the role, with some wanting Daniel Radcliffe to take up the claws. For his part, the Harry Potter alum doesn't seem interested.

The next Marvel movie hitting theaters is Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31st as part of the 2026 movie release list. There are rumors Sadie Sink is playing Jean Grey in that project, but we'll have to see if the beloved X-Men member actually appears.

In May 2016, just five months after first appearing as Poe Dameron in the Star Wars franchise, Oscar Isaac made his superhero movie debut bringing X-Men: Apocalypse’s titular antagonist to life. While it was certainly a big deal at the time to star in one of the X-Men movies, the actor didn’t exactly have the most pleasant experience working on it. I really feel for Isaac after he talked about how “overheated” he got while playing Apocalypse.

Not only is Apocalypse one of the stranger-looking mutants in X-Men lore, he also wears a particularly elaborate costume. That combination did not work in Oscar Isaac’s favor when it came to both comfort and getting to bond with his X-Men: Apocalypse co-stars. As he explained while visiting Hot Ones:

First off, let me say how fitting it is that Oscar Isaac recalled being overheated as he’s eating increasingly intense hot wings. Second, I’m sure that must have been an isolating experience for him. The cooling tent was necessary for him to sit in, but the downside was that he couldn’t really interact with the other actors aside from when they performed scenes together. Just think about how much fun Isaac could have had with Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy and the rest if he’d been cast in a different role!

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about Oscar Isaac’s less-than-ideal time on X-Men: Apocalypse. In 2018, the actor described playing Apocalypse as “excruciating,” because he had no idea when he signed on for the movie that he would be “encased in glue and latex and in a 40-pound suit that I had to wear a cooling mechanism at all times.” Isaac was also not able to turn his head and sit in a “specially designed saddle” when not filming. Then in 2021, Cyclops actor Tye Sheridan said that he “felt so bad” for Isaac because he “just looked uncomfortable all the time.”

Fortunately for Oscar Isaac, he’s been able to leave his stamp on the superhero genre in two other, more comfortable ways by playing Moon Knight in the MCU and voicing Miguel O’Hara in the Spider-Verse movies. While it remains to be seen when we’ll see the former again, you can hear him reprising the latter when Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse releases on June 18, 2027. In the much nearer future, see Isaac starring opposite Carey Mulligan in Beef Season 2, which Netflix subscription holders can stream starting on April 6.

There are various upcoming Marvel movies and upcoming Marvel TV shows to look forward to in 2026, although in the latter category, not all of them take place within the main MCU continuity. X-Men ’97 is one of those shows, as it instead continues to explore the universe that was originally introduced in X-Men: The Animated Series. I’m among the many who’s looking forward to the “very, very dark” X-Men ’97 Season 2 premiering on the 2026 TV schedule, but I also have to admit that the Disney+ show’s latest casting update is disappointing.

No, I’m not griping about an actor I don’t like being cast as one of the next season’s characters. This is about someone I was looking forward to hearing, but who evidently isn’t involved with the show at all. You may recall that in May 2025, former X-Men ’97 showrunner Beau DeMayo said he’d cast Neve Campbell as Polaris for Season 2. And yet, when The Movie Dweeb brought this up while speaking to her about Scream 7, which is now playing on the 2026 movies schedule, she said:

Ok, so assuming Neve Campbell isn’t lying about her involvement in X-Men ’97 at Marvel Studios’ behest, then what happened here? Beau DeMayo made it sound like Campbell had already recorded her dialogue as Polaris, Magneto’s daughter who’s also capable of manipulating magnetism. Did we misread his previous comments? Did the casting not actually go through? Is possible that Campbell’s recordings were actually shelved, and Polaris was recast following DeMayo’s exit?

Whatever the answers to these questions are, it’s a shame we won’t get to hear Neve Campbell voicing Polaris. After decades of being horror genre royalty from playing Sidney Prescott in all but one of the Scream movies, I was looking forward to her contributing to the superhero genre too. At the same time, I’ll keep an open mind for whomever will voice Polaris in X-Men ’97 Season 2, as they could still perform the role quite well.

At the end of X-Men ’97 Season 1, Cyclops and Jean Grey were flung 3960 A.D., where they met Mother Aksani (voiced by Gates McFadden). Rogue, Nightcrawler, Beast, Xavier and Magneto were sent to Ancient Egypt in 3000 B.C., where they met a young En Sabah Nur, a.k.a. Apocalypse. Storm, Wolverine and Morph’s whereabouts remain unknown, while Jubilee, Sunspot, Forge and Bishop remain in the present day, though the latter two intend to travel through time to rescue the missing X-Men. Oh, and let’s not forget how it was seemingly hinted that ‘90s Apocalypse intends to resurrect Gambit as one of his Four Horsemen.

Some people want to see Daniel Radcliffe play Wolverine, but he recently described taking on the mantle after Hugh Jackman as a "cursed chalice".

After Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, the door was finally open for mutants to join the MCU. While the OGs of the X-Men movies are back for Avengers: Doomsday, new actors are expected to take on their roles in future projects. Radcliffe has been a popular online choice for Wolverine, and in an interview from ScreenRant's TikTok he addressed the ongoing chatter. In his words:

This isn't the first time Radcliffe has laughed off those rumors, and it sounds like he doesn't have much of an interest in actually playing Wolverine. But given his ongoing popularity from the Harry Potter movies, as well as his status as a short king, fans are likely going to keep the discourse going until another actor is officially named as the next Logan.

This chatter about him playing Wolverine has been going on for years now, especially once Radcliffe put on some muscle. But later in the same interview, he shared why he really isn't interested in taking on the role so famously played by Hugh Jackman. In the actor's words:

He's not wrong. Jackman has been playing the clawed mutant for decades, so whoever tried to take on the mantle will have some very big shoes to fill. That's seemingly a big reason why Daniel Radcliffe isn't entertaining the idea of playing Wolverine; it's too daunting of a task given how synonymous the Greatest Showman actor is with that role. So, while "cursed chalice" was an unexpected way to describe all this, it does make a lot of sense.

In the years that have passed since playing Harry Potter, Radcliffe has established himself as an accomplished and versatile star of movies, TV, and Broadway. It's been fascinating to see his choice of projects, even if some fans still want him to play Wolverine in the MCU.

The next Marvel movie hitting theaters is Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31st as part of the 2026 movie release list. As for Radcliffe, he can be seen in the new NBC show The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins.
