Stephen King seems to have made a habit out of saving cancelled TV shows. After the famous author joined the fight to save Manifest, Netflix ended up ordering a fourth season of NBC's mystery series. Now, King is calling on Hulu to save another program: Y: The Last Man. 

The story of Manifest was cut short when NBC cancelled the mystery series last June. When the first three seasons hit Netflix that same month, many fans petitioned the streaming giant to save it a la Lucifer. An online petition racked up thousands of signatures, including that of the seminal horror writer. Faced with the overwhelming support of the fanbase, Netflix ordered a "supersized" fourth and final season. 

This isn’t the first time Netflix has saved a cancelled TV show, but the support of a pop culture legend probably didn't hurt things. In an attempt to save Y: The Last Man from a similar fate after Hulu passed on picking up a second season, the writer tweeted some thoughts, saying:

Based on the eponymous comic book series, Y: The Last Man is a post-apocalyptic saga developed for FX on Hulu . In the world of the show, a catastrophic event has caused every mammal with a Y chromosome to die under mysterious circumstances, aside from human Yorick Brown (hence the show’s title) and his pet monkey. The series was particularly lauded for its updated take on gender, although some critics noted issues with plotting. 

Despite the mostly positive reception, the show still met an unfortunate demise, even before its initial season finished airing. This decision prompted a fair amount of outrage from fans, especially because the season ends with plot points unresolved.

While he acknowledged some of the show's flaws, Stephen King is definitely on board for a potential new season. Hulu may not resurrect the series, but another network or streaming service could swoop in and save the day. Some of King’s fans on Twitter also suggested that he provide an ending himself. While this may seem like wishful thinking at the moment, stranger things have happened. All in all, it'll be interesting to see if the comic book adaptation finds new life somewhere.

Fans waited for years to see the popular comic series Y: The Last Man adapted for the small screen. The FX on Hulu drama follows Yorick Brown (played by Ben Schnetzer) in a post-apocalyptic world after all animals with a Y chromosome died simultaneously — save for Yorick and his monkey, Ampersand. Fans’ loyalty to Brian K. Vaughan’s comic series and the number of hurdles it had to overcome to finally make it to television made it all the more surprising when FX on Hulu announced Y: The Last Man’s cancellation before the end of its ten-episode first season.

It’s a rare move for FX to cancel a series, especially while the show is still airing. A more common procedure for the network would be to announce when a series has reached its final season. It was a labor of love to get Y: The Last Man to viewers in the first place. The adaptation of the comic underwent a change in showrunners, a recasting of the lead role and the COVID pandemic, all of which seem to have ultimately played a part in the series’ early demise. Time reportedly ran out in one key way.

THR reported that FX was up against an October 15 deadline to decide whether or not to again extend the contracts of its actors. Series stars like Diane Lane and Amber Tamblyn had already been signed on for years, as the pilot was originally ordered in 2018 with Lane and Barry Keoghan in the leading roles. But in 2019, showrunners Michael Green and Aida Coral left the project, citing creative differences, and were replaced by Eliza Clark. Keoghan was recast with Ben Schnetzer to play Yorick. 

By the time production was delayed again by COVID in 2020, FX had already extended the contracts of many of the actors multiple times, apparently making the network wary of extending their options once more before the first season of Y: The Last Man played out in full on FX on Hulu. 

Adding to that dilemma was reportedly that FX likely didn’t have the metrics on the series’ popularity to help them weigh their decision. Like most streaming services, Hulu doesn’t release its ratings data, and without the benefit of time to let the first season play out, they chose to cancel.

The reaction of the cast and crew, however, has been hopeful, as — in another rare move — FX is supporting the producers’ efforts to shop Y: The Last Man to other networks. Could HBO Max be a landing spot for Y: The Last Man’s second season (and maybe more)? There is a connection there, as Vertigo — an imprint of DC Comics — previously published the Y: The Last Man comic series. DC Comics and HBO Max are both owned by WarnerMedia.

It was no doubt shattering news for fans of Y: The Last Man to have waited so many years to see the comic series on screen, only to have it cancelled mid-season. But there seems to be hope, as all agree there is a story left to be told. Y: The Last Man is available for streaming on Hulu, with new episodes coming on Mondays through November 1. Alas, yet another show has felt the brunt of an untimely cancellation. It was recently announced that FX on Hulu’s freshman drama Y: The Last Man will not be returning to the streaming service for a second season, despite the first season still airing. The showrunner, as well as some other cast and crew members on the long-gestating comic book adaptation, were quick to react to the news.

Y: The Last Man premiered last month and takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where all mammals with a Y chromosome fall prey to an unknown cause. It’s an intriguing plot with plenty of storylines about gender and identity, though it seems it’s just another show that won’t continue to see the light of day, at least through FX. Showrunner Eliza Clark posted a lengthy statement to Twitter following the cancellation, making it clear that she's determined to find the series a new home:

Brian K. Vaughan, the esteemed author of the comic book source material for Y: The Last Man is adapted from, reposted Clark’s statement and added one of his own on Instagram. Seeing your book or comic adapted into a TV show must be an incredible feeling, so having it cancelled so early on is obviously not ideal for him (or anyone). However, just like the showrunner, Vaughan is keeping hope alive and staying positive in reflecting on his time being part of this series that has meant everything to him:

Amber Tamblyn, who portrays the strong-minded and vengeful Kimberly on Y: The Last Man, also reposted Clark’s statement on Twitter. Just like her colleagues, she is also determined that the series will get a second chance somewhere:

Regardless of their DNA chromosomes, cancelled TV shows have been known to come back from the dead before, usually due to a new network or streaming platform making the decision to pick them back up. 2021 has been kind to shows in that way, as Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Manifest and All Rise are just a few of the series that have been given a second chance this year already.

Fingers crossed that Y: The Last Man gets another season! In the meantime, new episodes premiere Mondays on FX on Hulu.

Ashley Romans (Agent 355)

In the role of Agent 355, Yorrick's bodyguard, Ashley Romans plays a diligent and vigilant character in Y: The Last Man. Previously, the actress played Tabitha Hutter in AMC's NOS4A2. Additionally, Romans took on the title role in Hermione Granger and the Quarter-Life Crisis. She also was seen as Alex in Showtime's Shameless. Romans' other television credits include I'm Dying Up Here and Insignificant Other. Ben Schnetzer (Yorick Brown)

Playing the part of Yorick Brown, an amateur escape artist and President Brown's son who becomes the last known biologically male human alive, Ben Schnetzer is the only person alive with a Y chromosome in Hulu's Y: The Last Man. Previously, Schnetzer starred in ABC's short-lived series, Happy Town. He also appeared in Epix's The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair and guest-starred on NBC's Law & Order. Outside of TV, Schnetzer played Max Vandenburg in The Book Thief, Mark Ashton in Pride, and Khadgar in Warcraft. Additionally, the actor's other film credits include Snowden, The Death and Life of John F. Olivia Thirlby (Hero Brown)

As Hero Brown, Yorick's paramedic sister, Olivia Thirlby plays a life-saving character in Y: The Last Man. Previously, Thirlby played Lucy Kittridge in Amazon Prime's Goliath. Additionally, the TV actress appeared in Kidnapped, Bored to Death, and The L Word: Generation Q. Furthermore, Thirlby lent her voice to MTV's short-lived Good Vibes.

Moreover, outside of television, Olivia Thirlby is most well-known for her performances in Juno, Dredd, The Darkest Hour, Margaret, United 93, and The Wackness. In the role of Kimberly Campbell Cunningham, a best-selling conservative writer who works hard to install a new president who will do whatever it takes to bring back the lost world, Amber Tamblyn plays a politically savvy person in FX's Y: The Last Man. Most notably, Tamblyn was Emmy-nominated for her starring role in CBS's Joan of Arcadia. The actress also notably played Jenny in CBS's Two and a Half Men and Martha M. Masters in Fox's House. Tamblyn's other TV credits include The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, Inside Amy Schumer, and General Hospital.

Moreover, away from TV, Amber Tamblyn is best known for playing Tibby Rollins in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movies. Playing the part of Nora Brady, a White House press advisor who struggles to survive with her preteen daughter, Marin Ireland is a pragmatic and deferential personality in Y: The Last Man. Most notably, the actress was Tony-nominated for her lead performance in 2009's Reasons to be Pretty. Her other notable theater credits include Blue Ridge, Summer and Smoke, The Big Knife, Blasted, Marie Antoinette, and In the Wake. Away from the stage, Ireland played Julia Bowman in Amazon Prime's Sneaky Pete. Currently, she can be seen in Netflix's The Umbrella Academy in the role of Sissy Cooper. Ireland's other TV credits include Homeland, Mildred Pierce, Masters of Sex, Girls, and The Slap.

Furthermore, in film, Marin Ireland was notably seen in Rachel Getting Married, Side Effects, The Irishman, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, Glass Chin, Light from Light, 28 Hotel Rooms, Piercing, and Hell or High Water. Diana Bang (Dr. Allison Mann)

As Dr. Allison Mann, an expert geneticist looking to discover the cause of the plague and why Yorick survived, Diana Bang plays a driven and determined person in Hulu's Y: The Last Man. Most notably, the actress played Park Sook-yin in The Interview. Her other movie credits include Sorority Wars, Lost Lagoon, That Burning Feeling, No Clue, The Tree Inside (which she co-produced), The Cleanse, Entanglement, Status Update, Boundaries, and The Age of Adulting. Last year, Bang appeared in Coffee & Kareem.

Additionally, outside of film, Diana Bang has a recurring role in Syfy's Resident Alien as Nurse Ellen. Her other television credits include The Astronauts, Away, The Baby-Sitters Club, The Order, You Me Her, Michelle's, Unspeakable, Fast Layne, Bates Motel, Eve of Destruction, and Fringe. Furthermore, Bang is a member of the Vancouver sketch comedy group, Assaulted Fish, and she has worked behind the camera on a few short films. Namely, the comedienne co-wrote, directed, and produced 2018's Karaoke Mamas. Also, Bang wrote 2009's Dandy Lions and directed 2019's In Loving Memory.

Elliot Fletcher (Sam Jordan)

In the role of Sam Jordan, Hero's performance artist best friend, Elliot Fletcher plays a notable character in Y: The Last Man. Most notably, he's known for his recurring roles in MTV's Faking It, Freeform's The Fosters, and Showtime's Shameless. Additionally, the TV actor plays Jake Barlow in TNT's Tell Me Your Secrets and guest-starred on Hulu's Runaways and truTV's Adam Ruins Everything. Outside of television, Fletcher was seen in Tekkonkinkreet and short films like 2017's The Station and 2018's Brother X. He also appeared in last year's World of Warcraft: Shadowlands. Furthermore, Fletcher was a talking head and a creative consultant on Netflix's Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen.

Juliana Canfield (Beth Deville)

Taking on the role of Beth Deville, Yorrick's girlfriend, Juliana Canfield plays a part of Yorrick's romantic past in FX's Y: The Last Man. Away from this series, the actress plays Jess Jordan in HBO's Succession. Also, Canfield appeared in Apple TV+'s Amazing Stories. Outside of TV, she starred in 2019's Oscar-winning short film, The Neighbors' Window. Additionally, Canfield can be seen in Plain Fiction and last year's The Assistant and On the Rocks. Quincy Kirkwood (Mackenzie Brady)

There is no better time for diehard fans of television than the fall. With the return of dozens of the best shows on broadcast, cable, and streaming being joined by television’s newcomers, there’s plenty to get you all excited as we push towards the final months of the year. As the summer TV lineup draws to a close in August, we will say goodbye to old friends like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, who we have turned to week-in and week-out for eight seasons just as we say hello to a slew of new shows in September and beyond, that will surely have a place in our hearts by year’s end.

Over the course of the next few months we will see the premieres of shows like Grey’s Anatomy Season 18, All American Season 4, and Yellowstone Season 4. But while we wait for the schedules from NBC, FOX, CBS, ABC, and many other channels, take a look at everything that has been ironed out already. The long-awaited adaptation of Y: The Last Man is finally coming out. The post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller is one of the most anticipated DC TV shows on the horizon and has been even before it was officially greenlit as a series. We can reveal all of the bumpy history behind that and other important facts regarding Y: The Last Man on FX in the following breakdown of everything that we know about the FX TV show so far, starting with exactly when you should set your calendar.

The Y: The Last Man Premiere Date Is Set For September 13, 2021

It was in October 2015 when FX first announced that Y: The Last Man was being developed into a TV series. The acclaimed cable network ordered the pilot, then known simply as Y, in the fall of the following year with no set release date at the time.

Due to various behind-the-scenes shake-ups, it was not until October 2020 when the series started filming and that winter, the network decided to use its full, original title instead of the one-letter abbreviation. It appears that the plans for Y: The Last Man are finally going smoothly with a current premiere date of Monday, September 13, 2021, on which the first two episodes will be available to stream exclusively on FX on Hulu.

Y: The Last Man Is Inspired By A DC Comic Of The Same Name

With the Arrow-verse happening on the CW and the live-action superhero-inspired programming coming to HBO Max, you might not expect a show based on a DC comic to wind up on FX, which was also the home of Marvel’s Legion - a twisted series set in the X-Men movies universe. However, the Hulu-exclusive lineup of programming from the “bold” cable network might be the best option for Y: The Last Man, which actually comes from the publisher’s more adult, and now defunct, Vertigo imprint.

The story, from writer Brian K. Vaughn and artist Pia Guerra, follows young Yorick Brown and his pet Capuchin monkey, Ampersand, who have mysteriously become the sole survivors of a plague that has eradicated all other male creatures on Earth. The 60-issue comic book series was published from September 2002 to March 2008 - the year it won the Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series before its Volume 10 collection was nominated for the first Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story in 2009.

Ben Schnetzer And Diane Lane Lead The Y: The Last Man Cast

Playing the part of Yorick Brown is Warcraft’s Ben Schnetzer, who filled in after Barry Keoghan dropped out to join the Eternals cast in February 2020. Considering the plot of the series, it is no surprise that the rest of the Y: The Last Man cast (outside of Paul Gross as the President of the United States and Elliott Fletcher as Sam Jordan) is predominantly female, including Academy Award nominated DC movies star Diane Lane as Yorick’s mother, Congresswoman Jennifer Brown, and Dredd actress Olivia Thirlby as his sister, Hero.

Ashley Romans (not a comic book movie vet, but from AMC’s adaptation of Joe Hill’s NOS4A2) stars as Agent 355 and Kimberly Cunningham is played by Amber Tamblyn of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants fame. Marin Ireland from 2016’s Hell or High Water, Diana Bang (known best for The Interview from 2014), and Succession’s Juliana Canfield also appear on the Y: The Last Man cast.

Eliza Clark Serves As Showrunner for Y: The Last Man

Not only is the Y: The Last Man cast made up mostly of women, but there is a large female presence behind the scenes as well. For instance, the series originally hired American Gods co-creator Michael Green and Jessica Jones and Luke Cage writer Aida Mashaka Croal to head the series together before they backed out in February 2019, leaving the spot open for Eliza Clark - a writer for The Killing and Animal Kingdom.

Eliza Clark, who wrote the first two episodes of Y: The Last Man, is also serving as executive producer with Brad Simpson, Mari Jo Winkler-Ioffreda, original creator Brian K. Vaughan, Melina Matsoukas, and Louise Friedberg, who also helmed the two-part premiere. In fact, she is one of several women in the director’s chair for the first season.

All Of Y: The Last Man Season 1 Is Directed By Women

As previously mentioned, Danish filmmaker Louise Friedberg (known for directing an episode of Netflix’s House of Cards and The Right Stuff for Disney+) is directing the first two episodes of Y: The Last Man. The rest of this premiere, 10-episode season will also be entirely helmed by female directors. Women are leading much of the production from behind the scenes, actually, including the directors of photography, the production designer, costume designer, casting director, editors, stunt coordinator, and in other departments.

Y: The Last Man Was Originally Greenlit As A Movie

Long before Y: The Last Man became one of the most anticipated DC TV shows, it was one of the most anticipated DC movies when New Line Cinema first optioned the rights in 2007 with Dark Knight trilogy story scribe David S. Goyer and filmmaker D.J. Caruso attached. The director (who originally wanted his Disturbia star Shia LaBeouf to play Yorick) would later explain that New Line’s refusal to split the story into a trilogy led to his exit in 2010.

Future 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg became attached to helm in 2013, a year after former Jericho writers Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia were brought on for a new draft and a year before Brian K. Vaughn stated the rights would revert back to him and Pia Guerra if shooting did not begin by September 2014. That is ultimately what killed Y: The Last Man’s chances at a big screen release before Vaughn, seemingly taking a cue from The Transporter and 2008’s The Incredible Hulk director Louis Lettierre, to partner with Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson to work on a television series.

That is the story of what led us to this moment as we await the forthcoming premiere of Y: The Last Man on FX on Hulu in the fall of 2021.

Laurence Fishburne has had quite the storied career. Starting out young at the age of 14 in the movie Cornbread, Earl and Me and even lying about his age so he could star in 1979’s Apocalypse Now, Laurence Fishburne movies and TV shows have pretty much been around for almost 50 years now. And while he’s come a long way from 1982’s Death Wish II to The Matrix, he’s always had that cool, yet somewhat ferocious performance lurking underneath the calm.

I really love doing these kinds of lists where I highlight black actors and actresses like Forest Whitaker, Viola Davis, and Octavia Spencer. But I found this list particularly difficult because of just how many films and TV shows I’ve loved Laurence Fishburne in over the years. For example, I grew up watching him as Cowboy Curtis on Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, and I even love him in bit parts like his role as Max Daniels in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. He even makes for a great Perry White in Man of Steel. But enough of the roles that didn’t make this list, and on with the ones that did! Oh, and minor spoilers up ahead.

12. Deep Cover (Russell Stevens Jr.)

You want to know a really cool movie? Deep Cover. Deep Cover is a really cool movie. Starring Laurence Fishburne (known back then as “Larry” Fishburne) as a police officer who fits the profile of a drug dealer so he pretends to be one, Deep Cover is a great follow-up performance to his role in 1991’s Boyz n the Hood.

Laurence Fishburne is so great in the role since he pulls off being a cop and a drug dealer so effectively. If this were a movie where he just had to play a cop, or one where he just had to play a drug dealer, it would still be convincing either way. Now that’s talent.

11. John Wick: Chapter 2 (The Bowery King)

Pairing The Matrix’s Keanu Reeves again with Laurence Fishburne was a match made in heaven. In this ultraviolent follow-up to the magnificent first film, Laurence Fishburne plays the Bowery King, a homeless man who actually rules the streets by keeping a close eye on what’s going on on the ground level. I mean, come on now, the role has Laurence Fishburne lovingly talking to pigeons. What more could you possibly want?

What I love about this role is that Fishburne takes the cockiness that he’s always exuding in all of his roles, and transposes it to a character in rags who looks like he would be the least important character in a movie, but ends up being one of the most important. It takes a lot to make a king out of a vagabond, but Laurence Fishburne manages to pull it off deftly.

10. Mission: Impossible 3 (Theodore Brassel)

I’m just going to put it out there—and don’t get mad—but J.J. Abrams Mission: Impossible 3 is the best movie in the franchise. I think some of that is in small part to Laurence Fishburne’s role as IMF director, Theodore Brassel, which effectively makes him Ethan Hunt’s boss.

And Laurence Fishburne plays a fantastic boss, as even the calmest reprimand from him still sounds utterly devastating. Also, because of the tangled web that this movie weaves, we spend a large portion of the film believing that Fishburne’s character is a mole. And -- SPOILER ALERT -- he walks the line so convincingly in the role that you come to believe that he could be working with the enemy, even though it turns out to not be true in the end.

9. Apocalypse Now (Tyrone “Mr. Clean” Miller)

Apocalypse Now is my favorite movie of all time, so I’m a bit biased. But nothing can take away from Laurence Fishburne’s performance as Tyrone “Mr. Clean” Miller, which was a part that he was only 14 at the time when shooting started, but ended up being 17 by the time the film was completed.

Tyrone is way too young to be in Vietnam, and you get a sense of dread throughout the movie since you like his character for having so much energy and youth. But when he dies on the boat and you hear his mother talking to him over a recording, it’s probably the hardest part of the movie to watch, which is saying a lot for a film that has a number of unsettling moments to sit through.

8. Event Horizon (Captain Miller)

You know, if a sentient space ship came back from the farthest reaches of space and I had to explore it, I would want Laurence Fishburne as my captain, too. That’s because Captain Miller will do anything for his crew—even sacrifice his own life—as long as it means some of his people get to see their families again.

Paul W. S. Anderson’s Event Horizon is a pretty scary film, and Laurence Fishburne is perfect as Captain Miller, as he plays calm in extreme situations better than anybody else. I mean, hell (Literally!), when Captain Miller sees the great beyond, he doesn’t give up. Instead, he picks up a metal beam and slams evil right in the face with it. Because that’s just the kind of leader Captain Miller is.

7. The Cotton Club (Bumpy Rhodes)

Laurence Fishburne plays a gangster in this period piece about the Jazz age. And while he doesn’t have much of a role in it, his performance is so distinct that it had to land high on this list.

In the racist 1930s, the black acts at The Cotton Club are constantly harassed by a bouncer who is always throwing them around and putting black people where he believes their place is. But in comes Laurence Fishburne as Bumpy Rhodes to deliver some retribution. I guess a face swirl in the toilet bowl could be a considered a drink for the lowest common denominator.

6. Mystic River (Detective Sergeant Whitey Powers)

Clint Eastwood’s Mystic River is a pitch black movie full of (morally) pitch black characters. But the one person who just looks to be seeking out the truth is Laurence Fishburne’s Detective Sergeant Whitey Powers, who is also Detective Sean Devine’s (played by Kevin Bacon) partner.

Laurence Fishburne is so effective because you can watch his facial expressions and see the thought process working behind his eyes. He suspects one of his partner’s childhood friends is a murderer, and he plays a super convincing role as a detective who thinks he has uncovered the truth and is on the hunt for the answers. And if you’ve seen Mystic River, then you know it’s the kind of movie that doesn’t hand out answers easily.

5. Othello (Othello)

Laurence Fishburne is no Orson Welles, and I mean that in a good way. I’m referring to the fact that Orson Welles once donned black face and played the moor who married Desdemona in the 1951 movie version of the famous Shakespearean play. Thankfully, Laurence Fishburne plays Othello in the 1995 version, and yes, I’ll admit it, Laurence Fishburne is downright sexy in the role.

And while Kenneth Branagh definitely steals the movie as Iago, Laurence Fishburne is one of the few actors I can honestly say made me fully understand Shakespeare. Because yes, I love Shakespeare and all, but sometimes, I just don’t understand it. And Laurence Fishburne made me understand it! That’s how good his performance is.

4. Black-Ish (Earl "Pops" Johnson)

Laurence Fishburne actually has several different standout performances on television, but one of his best is definitely as the recurring character Earl “Pops” Johnson, who plays Andre’s dad on the show, Black-ish. In the role, Fishburne plays the surly but lovable grandpa type who is always telling stories of his youth and why his son’s (and grandkids’) generations just don’t measure up.

I love this character because we don’t often get to see Laurence Fishburne be hilarious, and Black-ish gives him that outlet. He is often given some of the best lines and can usually be seen delivering them above an open newspaper. I’m looking forward to him having his own spin-off with Jenifer Lewis on the new spin-off, Old-ish.

3. Boyz n the Hood (Jason "Furious" Styles Jr.)

Do you know how old Laurence Fishburne was when he took on the iconic role of Jason “Furious” Styles Jr., who plays Cuba Gooding Jr.’s father in the movie, Boyz n the Hood? 28. And while there are plenty of 28-year-old fathers out there, Cuba Gooding Jr. was actually 23 at the time—a mere five years younger. Still, that didn’t prevent Fishburne from playing a convincing father, especially one who seems to have a great deal of knowledge of the world.

Boyz n the Hood is a pretty harrowing and eye-opening movie, and with all the gangster violence and depressing moments, Laurence Fishburne shows a stark reminder of the intelligence and selfhood that still exists in these neighborhoods. That is, if you’re actually willing to look.

2. Hannibal (Jack Crawford)

You know, I once wrote an article dreamcasting a Silence of the Lambs movie with a more diverse cast. And for the character of Jack Crawford, I picked Mahershala Ali. Because I think he would be a good Jack Crawford in a movie version. But Jack Crawford was already played by a black actor on the TV show, and the man who played him was Laurence Fishburne.

Fishburne actually won a Saturn Award for his performance as the character. And for those who are wondering, this is not the movie’s Crawford by any stretch of the imagination. This Crawford will get into a knife fight if he has to. But as the boss, a lot of things slip underneath his nose, and Fishburne is so convincing in the role that you almost allow yourself to see his way of thinking, even though it’s clear what’s going on. Plus, to take this iconic character and make it his own is no small feat. He would be my favorite Laurence Fishburne performance if not for…

1. The Matrix (Morpheus)

Come on, there could only be one (or Neo, which is an anagram for one). The man who launched a thousand memes with his red pill/blue pill scene, Morpheus will likely forever be Laurence Fishburne’s most iconic and best performance. As the captain of the Nebuchadnezzar and one of the first freed from the Matrix, Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus is likely the first character people think of when you mention the name, “Laurence Fishburne.”

And for good reason! Morpheus is the kind of character who can spout philosophical nuggets one second, and then kick butt the next. He’s also the kind of character who looks like a born leader, but one who can also get captured and have to be rescued. In other words, he’s a fully three-dimensional character and Laurence Fishburne plays him like a pro, which is why he will likely always be the actor’s greatest role and the one who will live on the longest.

Laurence Fishburne is still going strong, and the future is bright for the actor. It kind of sucks that he won’t be in the fourth Matrix movie, but whatever he shows up in, I’ll definitely be there to see it. Won’t you?

Each year, FX can depend on a new season of its American Horror Story to deliver some of the network's best ratings of the season, since the show's over-the-top chaos has been doing just that for going on ten seasons now. So when the bite-sized anthology spinoff American Horror Stories was announced, it made perfect sense. However, it looks like FX viewers won't be the ones heading into Ryan Murphy's new funhouse, as the network is now flipping tactics and turning American Horror Stories and one more highly anticipated project into streaming series on Hulu.

That's right, the Disney-owned cable channel and the Disney-owned streaming service are continuing to build their tag-teamed "Hulu on FX" branding, and the latest two projects to take the online leap are American Horror Stories and the long-awaited comic book adaptation Y: The Last Man. The announcements were made during Hulu's Newfronts presentation for advertisers, during which the streaming service unveiled new ad formats and spread the word about both its recently unveiled new projects and the aforementioned additions to the Hulu on FX library. Let's take a look at both of them one by one.

Why American Horror Stories Will Be Great For Hulu

As already discussed, American Horror Story has been a huge hit for FX, and has long established itself as one of the most successful horror TV shows of all time. That said, AHS has followed along with many other shows in that audiences for its weekly live broadcasts are getting slightly smaller on average, while the show's delayed viewing stats (accounting for on demand and DVR) have been rising. So rather than have to figure out a way to specifically boost American Horror Stories' chances with live audiences, execs can now look to optimizing the anytime-viewing habits of streaming audiences.

One of the franchise's biggest creative issues over the years involves stretching each year's story across 13 episodes, which was curbed for the most part with AHS: 1984's intentionally slashed episode count. The American Horror Stories spinoff will ease that longevity pain even more, with each episode featuring its own standalone story, similar to Twilight Zone and Black Mirror. Or even Hulu's own holiday-centric anthology Into the Dark, which brings one feature-length installment a month to subscribers. While the service's viewership stats aren't public, Hulu clearly has an idea of how that show is doing, implying that they're also hopeful for the AHS follow-up series.

As well, a streaming service allows for certain kinds of content freedom that American Horror Stories might not have gotten even on a censorship-averse network like FX. The franchise is obviously one that goes hard on chaotic violence and gore, so there could be an uptick in how graphic those elements are. As well, it wouldn't be a modern Ryan Murphy show without some form of sordid sexual situations, so nudity could become more of a factor in the single-serving anthology. The language might not be as much of an issue, since FX has been pretty open about embracing F-bombs in recent years.

Why Y: The Last Man Will Be Great For Hulu

As a project that has been in various forms of development for at least twelve years, FX's Y: The Last Man could get released as an in-game TV show on Fortnite or something and it would still be a victory for it to come to life at all. Thankfully, though, the Eliza Clark-headed project is definitely on the way, with a cast led by Diane Lane and Ben Schnetzer, and Hulu feels like it'll be just as solid of a home as FX would have been.

Given that Y: The Last Man isn't as dark and fucked up as American Horror Stories will likely be, its shift to Hulu isn't necessarily a sign that viewers will get more uncensored moments. However, the comic series will potentially gibe better with the streaming service in other thematic ways. Set in the post-apocalypse, Y: The Last Man centers on Yorick and his monkey Ampersand, who are both the last males of their species on the entire planet. With more questions than answers, Yorick finds himself trying hard to survive in a female-ruled world that isn't as appreciative of his goofy jokes as he'd like.

Given the hardcore focuses on gender, race and class, FX was definitely a suitable home, given original series such as Pose, Atlanta and Better Things. But FX also skews super-grim and adult with just about everything, while Hulu embraces all tones with its originals, from Little Fires Everywhere's controversial drama to The Great's sexually heightened comedy to Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi's culture-honoring. Y: The Last Man's creative team will likely have an easier time injecting the show with more optimism and sunshine than they would have had on FX.

The Hulu on FX branding initially made waves when Alex Garland's sci-fi drama Devs became the first FX series to get ported to the streaming service, with Cate Blanchett's Mrs. America following suit. Other projects that are also making the switch include the previously announced Jeff Bridges thriller The Old Man and Kate Mara and Nick Robinson's scandal-driven miniseries The Teacher.

During the same NewFronts presentation, Hulu also announced that The Handmaid's Tale Season 4 will be pushed back until 2021, making fans wait even longer to see how the dystopian drama will follow-up on the devastating third season. Hopefully that delay won't push it back too far, though.

Now, it looks like we could be very close to getting that adorable monkey back on television, as the animal actor has been cast in the FX adaptation of Y: The Last Man. Yay!

FX CEO John Landgraf broke the news during the network's party at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. According to The Hollywood Reporter, while Landgraf was viewing footage of Y, he instantly recognized the face Katie, the white-headed capuchin monkey who played Ross's pet on the NBC hit Friends in the '90s, when Landgraf was an executive at the network.

Wow. John Landgraf certainly sounds like he was excited to have spotted Katie in that Y footage, doesn't he? If you're thinking (like I was) that pretty much all capuchin monkey actors would probably look the same, and that Landgraf could be mistaken, never fear, folks. THR spoke to Katie's trainer and confirmed that it is, indeed, the former Marcel who's nabbed a role on Y.

Y is being adapted from the acclaimed graphic novel, Y: The Last Man, from writer Bryan K. Vaughan and artist Pia Guerra. The story focuses on Yorick, a.k.a. Y, who appears to be one of only two male mammals to survive a plague that, you guessed it, wiped pretty much all men from the face of the planet. As Y tries to figure out what happened in this post-apocalyptic world, he gets assistance from his helper monkey, Ampersand, who is the only other male mammal to survive the plague.

I'm sure Katie was glad to get another job, even if it does mean playing a male capuchin monkey once again. Of course, the reality is that Katie, who's reported to be in her mid-to late 20s now (they grow up so fast...), will never be forgotten. Even though she only played Marcel for eight episodes of Friends throughout the first two seasons, she's one of the best remembered aspects of the mega hit. And, it doesn't hurt that new generations of TV viewers and animal lovers will continue to watch her work on the comedy, as those classic episodes won't be leaving the air any time soon.

While seeing Katie work her magic on another TV show would be awesome, you will notice that there is some hesitance as to whether or not we'll actually get to see Katie on Y. The main issue is that, even though Katie has already thrown her all into Ampersand for the pilot, there have been some creative changes since then. Original showrunners Aida Croal and Michael Green were replaced earlier this year by Eliza Clark, and it's possible that Y will now decide that it's easier to work with an all CGI monkey creation in the important role.

Y has an amazing cast of well-known actors that have been chosen to lead the show, so we'll be sure to hear more from the project as it continues to work toward its 2020 debut on FX. Meanwhile, it's not time to cry for Katie just yet, she might still be attached to Y, and even if she's not, capuchin monkeys live until they're around 40, so she's got time to nab another career-making TV part!

A TV adaptation of Y: The Last Man has been in the works off and on for years now, and it's finally looking like a live-action version of the beloved comic is coming to the small screen, courtesy of FX. The project announced a killer cast earlier in July, and now FX has revealed that a certain actress of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (among other projects) fame has landed a significant part. Amber Tamblyn will tackle a role on Y, and we can bet that her new character won't have a whole lot in common than her Traveling Pants character.

In Y, Amber Tamblyn will play a character by the name of Mariette Callows. She comes from a privileged background due to her status as the President of the United States' daughter. She's spent her life being groomed to pursue a career in politics, but she may not be up to the task of sticking with her father's conservative values. Tamblyn joins a cast already comprised of Diane Lane, Barry Keoghan, Imogen Poots, Lashana Lynch, Juliana Canfield, and Marin Ireland.

FX's Y will explore a post-apocalyptic world following a devastating event that wiped out every male mammal except for one lone human, played by Barry Keoghan. The en masse deaths of the men mean that the women will hold the political power in the present, and they'll have to tackle issues concerning gender, race, and class all against a backdrop of the need to survive.

Interestingly, Mariette Callows is listed as the President's daughter and as somebody trained to uphold her father's values, which seems to indicate that the President is Mariette's father. If that's the case, he likely will have died before the beginning of the series as one of the victims to the event that wiped out most of the men. Could Y still reveal that the President is a woman and Mariette's push to uphold her dad's values is unrelated to the office of the President of the United States? Sure. But there may be a big mystery to be solved regarding Mariette Callows.

The Y TV project is based on the DC Comics' series Y: The Last Man, which ran for 60 issues beginning with an initial publication in 2002, written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Pia Guerra. If FX gives a full season order for the new show, it will mark the first time a Y: The Last Man adaptation finally reaches an audience. Adaptations for film and television have been attempted going back as far as 2008. At this point, Y is still in the pilot stage, so fans of the comic probably want to start crossing their fingers that it lands a series order. With the likes of Amber Tamblyn and Diane Lane on board, a series could be a big hit.

After years of dashed hopes and false starts, the acclaimed graphic novel from Bryan K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, Y: The Last Man, might finally be heading to the screen at FX, under the official title, Y. The network announced today who will be starring in the pilot, and there's some great talent involved, meaning that we're way closer to actually seeing this post-apocalyptic story finally get adapted for the TV-viewing masses than we've ever been before. Let's start with the biggest name that's currently been cast.

Actress Diane Lane, pictured above in her recent role in the film Paris Can Wait, has taken an important part in Y. As Senator Jennifer Brown in the adaptation, Lane will take on the part of a junior senator in her first term who has already made quite the name for herself as someone who is more than willing to put aside political machinations to keep her personal ideals intact. Jennifer also just so happens to be the mother of the title character, Yorick Brown, and his sister Hero. Lane received an Oscar nomination for her leading role in Unfaithful in 2003, and has become known recently for her work as Martha Kent in Man of Steel, Batman v Superman and Justice League.

Next up, in the all important eponymous role of Yorick (also known as Y) will be actor Barry Keoghan. Y is described as being a young man who easily uses his sense of humor to try to divert attention away from his problems, which are actually quite plentiful, as he appears to be the only male mammal to have survived a worldwide plague that wiped out those with the Y chromosome. Keoghan has made a wonderful name for himself recently with his work in films like Dunkirk, American Animals and The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

As Yorick's sister, Hero, actress Imogen Poots will take on the part of the hard-as-nails EMT with severe emotional trauma that frequently leads her to abandon what should be strict barriers of professional and personal conduct. Poots is best known to American audiences for her time on the Showtime series Roadies, and has also appeared in Green Room, Fright Night and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

Lashana Lynch, seen above in her role as Rosaline Capulet in the Shonda Rhimes series Still Star-Crossed, has signed on to play the badass Agent 355 in Y. Her secret service agent is known for doing her job extremely well and with the highest level of professionalism, even when circumstances are dire and very unexpected. Coming up for Lynch is a co-starring role in the highly anticipated Captain Marvel next year.

Marin Ireland, best recognized from her role on the Amazon series Sneaky Pete, will be taking on the role of Nora in the show. Nora is the right hand and senior assistant to the president, and someone who's very skilled at navigating Washington's power structure while maintaining a balanced family life. Ireland has also been seen in Elementary, Girls, Law & Order: SVU and the film Hell or High Water, among other projects.

Rounding out the current cast for Y is relative newcomer Juliana Canfield as Beth. Beth is a farm girl who moved to New York to get a taste of the big city, becoming a Brooklyn-based knife maker who forms a bond with Yorick. Canfield has most recently been seen in the HBO drama Succession.

Since FX has only ordered a pilot for Y, there's no word when (or if) the show will actually make it to air, but stay tuned to CinemaBlend and we'll keep you up to date on all the latest developments with regards to the proposed sci-fi series. At this point in late 2016, Bryan K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra's stellar comic series Y: The Last Man has been in development for live-action for longer than its issues were produced. Last year saw a huge update for the long-gestating sci-fi-leaning adventure when it was announced FX was greasing the wheel for a TV version, and now the next big step has been taken with the acquisition of screenwriter Michael Green as Y: The Last Man's showrunner. Now let's set our alarms for a year from now when we might hear about a series order.

Just kidding. I can't possibly be snarky about any good news granted to Y: The Last Man, which is one of the best standalone comic series of all time, and Michael Green has quite a bit of experience when it comes to comic book adaptations. He got his first big break as a writer and producer on the pre-Superman series Smallville, co-wrote 2011's Green Lantern (and a segment on the direct-to-DVD Green Lantern: Emerald Knights feature), and co-wrote the script for the upcoming Wolverine-wrapping feature Logan. To shout out a couple more of his recent efforts, Green is currently Bryan Fuller's co-showrunner on Starz's upcoming adaptation of American Gods, and he also took part in the screenwriting on the upcoming sequels Alien: Covenant and Blade Runner 2049, as well as the Murder on the Orient Express remake.

While your mileage may vary for any or all of the above-mentioned projects, there's no denying that Michael Green has the experience and the knowledge when it comes to bringing a difficult-to-adapt narrative to live-action. According to THR, he will co-write the script for Y: The Last Man alongside Bryan K. Vaughan, whose TV work includes Lost, Under the Dome and the upcoming series Runaways, which is also based on a series he created.

Y: The Last Man is quite unique in its aesthetic, or at least it was before Last Man on Earth started up on Fox. It tells the tale of Yorik Brown (and his monkey Ampersand) as he tries to make sense of a world where everything with a Y chromosome dies all at once, leaving only women to take on the restructuring of civilization. The gender divide provides a multitude of situations that comment on the real world, and we can certainly expect that to be built on if it makes it to FX proper.

Fans know to be wary of this good news, however, since [big problems][1] always seem to hit Y: The Last Man. And the caveat here involves Michael Green hopping onto this project while still involved with American Gods, which is close to the same occupational situation that recently caused Bryan Fuller to step down as showrunner on the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery series for CBS All Access. There are differences, of course, most notably in the scheduling, since Y: The Last Man is in early development while Star Trek Discovery was awaiting its actual production. So let's hope the timing is enough to keep this project on track.

FX currently has another high-energy comic adaptation coming, with the X-Men-tied Legion kicking off in February from Fargo creator Noah Hawley. If this is indeed the network that pulls off an actual Y: The Last Man adaptation, then someone will have to pry me off of the ceiling so that I can watch it. Well, this is not how I wanted to start my Friday. It appears that the long-rumored big screen adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s amazing comic book series Y: The Last Man is offically dead.

Director Dan Trachtenberg confirmed the terrible news on Twitter, and then elaborated on what his plans were for the story over at /Film. While the filmmaker didn’t reveal what officially killed the project (he would only say it wasn’t the usual suspects of money, script issues, or casting that did the film in), he did talk at length about his vision for bringing Yorick and Ampersand’s adventure to the big screen. Reading about it is only going to make you sadder it didn’t happen.

The comic, which is often hailed as one of the greatest series of its time, tells the globe-spanning tale of Yorick Brown and his monkey Ampersand. Somehow, the duo survives a catastrophic plague that kills all of the world’s men besides them – and is forced to team up with a female government agent named 355 to figure out what caused the outbreak and why they survived.

With Trachtenberg’s version dead, the rights revert back to Vaughn and Guerra, who could theoretically begin shopping it anew. Trachtenberg doesn’t think that’s going to happen, though. "I’m not sure Brian will ever want to do anything more with it, and I’m not sure that he needs to."

Should that happen, fans will always have the comic, which is a fascinating synthesis of seemingly disparate elements. Action set-pieces exist comfortably alongside quieter character moments that show the cast isn’t simply comprised of archetypes. At its heart, Y: The Last Man is really about gender relations – but Vaughan and Guerra handle the material in such a subtle way that the bigger ideas tend to sneak up on you. This nuance was one of the reasons many fans were nervous about a film adaptation. Subtlety is usually lost in bringing these sorts of things to the screen.

Trachtenberg was well aware of the challenges presented in turning the 60 issue series into a feature, and had planned accordingly. In his vision, the film would cover the first two trade paperbacks (issues 1-10), then the story would be progressed in subsequent sequels. He also mentions movies that were referenced frequently during the production, which only helps to give us an idea of what might have been.

While it’s disappointing that the film version is not happening, this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the end of the line for Yorick and Ampersand on the screen. As mentioned earlier, Vaughan and Guerra could find a new studio to take over production. The small screen remains an option (and honestly, probably the best option for the kind of serialized story Y: The Last Man is looking to tell) as well. If something like AMC’s adaptation of Preacher takes off, it’s no stretch to imagine another network taking a keen interest in Y. A cable network like HBO feels like the best fit. Perhaps there will be a silver lining in this dark cloud, after all.

Caruso was hired to helm the film, but after he left in early 2011 the project found itself stuck in development hell. There was some forward progress last year, as it was reported that New Line Cinema was making the project a priority, but now it seems that it really has been resurrected.

Dan Trachtenberg, who is best known to internet audiences as the director of the short film Portal: No Escape (based on the hit video game), has been tapped by New Line to make his feature debut with an adaptation of Y: The Last Man. For those unfamiliar with the story, it begins when every living thing with a Y chromosome on Earth suddenly dies...with the exception of a young magician named Yorick and his pet Capuchin monkey, Ampersand. Following the events the world is thrown into complete chaos, and the lead character must not only try and figure out what happened to all of the other men, but also just try to survive.

In March 2012 the studio hired Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia, writers of the upcoming Zorro reboot, to pen the script, though the new report doesn't mention if they will still be basing the project on their work.

For those of you who have long been waiting for a movie adaptation of the acclaimed comic series Y:The Last Man, I may have some good news. There are now reports that New Line Cinema, which owns the film rights to the Brian K. Vaughn books, is really happy with the latest progress for a film version of the story and have now made it one of the studio's top priorities. The story follows a man named Yorick and his pet monkey as they work to find out why every male creature on Earth is dead with the exception of themselves.

Vulture has the latest word about the project, which has been in various forms of development for nearly a decade. New Line apparently loves the latest draft of the script, which was written by former Jericho writers Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia (they started working on the project this past March) and they have already begun the hunt for a director. D.J. Caruso, best known for movies like Eagle Eye, Disturbia and, most recently, I Am Number Four, was previously attached to helm the project, but things did not work out between him and the studio.

Y: The Last Man really is a brilliant story and would be a great movie, but one must wonder if it's ever really going to happen. Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s Y: The Last Man, a fantastic 10 part series from Vertigo Comics, has been in various stages of development for quite some time. Y follows Yorick Brown and his monkey Ampersand as the only remaining male mammals on the planet after some mysterious plague kills every other living thing with a Y chromosome. Now Yorick, an amateur magician and irresponsible goof, with the help of Special Agent 355 and Dr. Alison Mann must try and figure out what went wrong in hopes of saving the species from extinction.

THR's Heat Vision reports that the writing duo of Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia are in final negotiations to write an adaptation of the comic series for New Line with J.C. Spink, Chris Bender and David Goyer producing. Federman and Scaia cut their teeth writing for television (Human Target and Jericho) before recently being hired to write the new Zorro origin story for Sony. At one point DJ "Disturbia" Caruso was going to direct Shia LaBeouf as Yorick and Alicia Keys as 355 from a script by Carl Ellsworth, Jeff Vintar and Vaughan but that (intended trilogy) has been long abandoned. And good news in my opinion because, even though I agree that the property is way to large for a single film and is probably best served for an HBO mini-series, after their collaboration on Eagle Eye I was certainly not excited by the prospect of a Caruso-TheBeef Y: The Last Man.

Now with the script in Federman and Scaia's hands and going back to square one, I would rather see somebody like Sherlock's Paul McGuigan take the reigns with Adam Brody in the lead. He’s got that fast talking, goofy charisma needed for a role like Yorick. Adepero Oduye (Pariah) would make a good 355 with Grace Park (Hawaii Five-0) as Dr. Mann. Yeah. I've thought about this one before; now let's hope it finally hits the big screen. Who could you see in the big screen adaptation of Vaughan and Guerra's Y: The Last Man?

Though his big movie this weekend, Eagle Eye, is based on an original idea by none other than Steven Spielberg, D.J. Caruso is about to move into adaptation territory with Y: The Last Man. The 60-issue comic book series, which just wrapped up this year, is a post-apocalyptic tale about one man, Yorick, who is the only male survivor of a plague that kills everything on earth with a Y chromosome. The sprawling story tells what happens all over the world, from Amazonian tribes of women to the Washington Monument in D.C. Caruso talked to First Showing about his plans to adapt the comics.

First of all, Caruso admitted he's facing a huge challenge: "If you know the series at all, it's a lot to choose from… You want to make a movie that stands alone, but I keep telling them I can't fit it all into one movie. God willing if it's successful enough, there has to be another movie."

He then went into a lot of details that will likely only make sense to you if you've read the comics. Basically he'll show a lot of what's happening around the world, such as in China, in montages and little vignettes, but for the most part the movie will focus on Yorick and his monkey, Ampersand. There's also been a major plot change from the books, inserting a "ticking clock" with Yorick and Ampersand. Caruso explains, "I separated them, and Yorick starts to get a little sick when Ampersand's not with him. I felt like we needed some kind of ticking clock so it wasn't just a boy and his monkey."

Caruso says the book's writer, Brian K. Vaughn, was happy with the plot change, so purists can take heart that Caruso is going forward with best intentions. As someone who hasn't read the comics, I have no idea what this "ticking clock" addition could mean. So, nerds of the world (and I mean that in the best way), speak up. What will this change about your beloved Y?
