There are some celebrity couples that go together like peanut butter and jelly and others that society dubs as a bit more of a mismatch. While we’re used to seeing Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel together now, there was a distinct period of time when the New Girl a-lister felt like she came from a totally different sphere than Scott. Well, as it turns out, the HGTV star knows he’s “dating up” with Deschanel, and he has a message for all you fans who continually like to point it out to him.

February is the month of love, and the actor and reality renovator took a moment to reflect on their respective social media accounts. Her post was short and simple, but his took a bit of a shot at the fans who are apparently always calling him out for “dating up.” He made sure to use some emojis to keep it lighthearted, but it does feel like there’s a bit of a sting there.

Honestly, I’m a little surprised his qualm was with fans calling him out for dating up and not the fans who are continuously asking when he and Deschanel will officially tie the knot. The two have blended their lives together, and moved together into their “dream home” in Los Angeles. While she has a ring on her finger following the major life moves, it’s still just an engagement ring, prompting a lot of fan chatter.

In fact, the top query from a fan on the post was this: “When are you 2 finally going to do it? Lol it seems like you have been engaged forever.”

Zooey Deschanel and Jonathan Scott do feel like an unlikely pair, simply because they aren’t the type of people whom you would expect to have ever crossed paths in Hollywood. She’s been a movie star and no. 1 on the call sheet in the sitcom world whereas he works a ton with his brother Drew Scott on various Property Bros. projects.

They actually can thank James Corden for their meet cute, having starred together during an episode of “Carpool Karaoke” after her divorce from movie producer Jacob Pechenik. That was seven years ago, now, and about 2.5 years since the couple announced their engagement. Scott's even been honest about the couple "having fun" and basically making no progress on a wedding before.

They’ve faced some challenges during this time, too, as Deschanel notably lost her childhood home in the Pacific Palisades fire in 2025.

So, they haven't made tying the knot official, yet, and when they do so, Scott's already been clear it won't be public. However, they seem happy, regardless. So, maybe next Valentine's Day, you HGTV fans should give them more of the benefit of the doubt! Unlikely couples can make the best couples... sometimes.

If you’re anything like me, your family makes it a point to watch Elf, one of the best Christmas movies ever, every year. I know we’re not alone. My brother-in-law insists on it, and who am I to argue about it? It’s a stone-cold comedy classic. However, it turns out that one of the stars of the movie, Zooey Deschanel, hasn’t seen the movie since it premiered in 2003!

While promoting her latest movie, Merv, which you can catch now with an Amazon Prime subscription, her co-star Charlie Cox was shocked to learn it had been more than 20 years since Deschanel had seen it. Though it does seem like she may end up watching it this year. The interaction is fantastic.

Charlie Cox Loves Elf

In an interview together with Jake Hamilton at Good Day Chicago, Deschanel is asked by Hamilton if her family finds it on the Christmas movie schedule every year (like the rest of us). Deschanel admits that she doesn’t, but that her daughter asked her this year to watch it. Cox then asks Deschanel when the last time she’d seen Elf, and she reveals that she has not seen it since the premiere, which blows Cox’s mind. He says:

She takes the compliment, but Cox is still flabbergasted, adding what we're all already thinking:

Deschanel has seen clips from it, she says, but perhaps the most famous scene of hers in the movie, she even missed at the premiere. She tells Cox and Hamilton in the interview that during the scene where she sings with Will Ferrell in the shower, she had excused herself to use the bathroom.

Though she does say that she has seen that clip the most of any of them, which checks out given it went viral again this year thanks to Ferrell's kids recreating the shower scene.

Ultimately, it’s not all that strange that an actor doesn’t go back and revisit previous work, but when you’re part of a beloved Christmas classic that has become ubiquitous at this time of year, it is a little surprising that Deschanel hasn’t seen it at least once. Now that she has kids, I’m sure she doesn’t stand a chance of avoiding it anymore.

My niece and nephew adore the movie, and even in the middle of the hot summer, I catch my niece quoting scenes (she especially loves the Will Ferrell quote recounting how he got from the North Pole to New York City). They insist on watching every year (on Christmas itself, naturally). I have a feeling Deschanel and her kids will be doing the same over the next few years.

Did you think we were done with the ‘Is Die Hard a Christmas movie’ debate once Bruce Willis declared it wasn’t back in 2018? You’d be sorely mistaken if you did, as the debate has persisted since then, though don’t ask Die Hard director John McTiernan to take a side on it. Now New Girl star Zooey Deschanel, who has her own her own Christmas movie cred from Elf, has thrown in her two cents on this topic, and I agree with the point she makes.

What Zooey Deschanel Said About Die Hard

Deschanel, who can now be seen performing opposite Daredevil: Born Again’s Charlie Cox in the 2025 movie release Merv (which can be streamed with a Prime Video subscription) gave her Die Hard take while speaking with People. She’s in the camp of people who believes it is a Christmas movie, saying:

That's an astute observation, and one that comes right before we're about to hit Christmas. My feelings about Die Hard as a Christmas movie are complicated, but let me get into why I overall side with Zooey Deschanel on this.

Why Zooey Deschanel Has The Right Die Hard Take

Here’s the thing: contrary to CinemaBlend’s selection of the best Christmas movies of all time, I don’t think Die Hard should rank high on that list. My primary criteria for judging these types of movies is how much their premises focus on the actual holiday and infuse viewers with the Christmas spirit. Die Hard, while a great watch and certainly deserving of being called one of the best action movies of all time, falls short in these fields.

That being said, I do agree with Zooey Deschanel that Die Hard does qualify as a Christmas movie, at least technically speaking. Hans Gruber (who some might argue is the actual hero of the movie) and his men take over Nakatomi Plaza while a party is being held on Christmas Eve, and John McClane makes a handful of Christmas references while taking out Gruber’s men. This isn’t the same thing as a movie like Iron Man 3, where events are taking place during Christmas, but the holiday itself doesn’t directly factor into the story.

Zooey Deschanel’s opinion won’t do anything to end the Die Hard debate, but it’s still nice to hear where she stands on it. And just like Macaulay Culkin used his Home Alone stardom to argue against Die Hard being a Christmas movie while recently appearing on Mythical Kitchen, the actress is better positioned to offer an opinion on this subject. As mentioned earlier, she starred opposite Will Ferrell in Elf as Jovie, Buddy’s love interest.

If you’re in the mood to stream either Elf or Die Hard now, they can be respectively streamed with an HBO Max subscription and a Hulu subscription. Otherwise, you can look forward to seeing Zooey Deschanel next in the upcoming comedy Trash Mountain, which began filming in October, but doesn’t have a release date yet.

It’s hard to imagine anything being different in one of your favorite movies. For example, I can picture no one other than Zooey Deschanel playing Will Ferrell’s love interest in Elf, which is one of the best Christmas movies ever. However, there was a time when a different actress was set to play Jovie, and the New Girl star revealed who had the part before her.

Again, I can’t picture the Elf cast featuring anyone other than Ferrell, Deschanel, James Caan, Bob Newhart and co. However, during an episode of Call Her Daddy, Zooey Deschanel revealed that she originally wasn’t going to play Jovie. In fact, Katie Holmes had already been cast when she took a meeting about the movie with its director, Jon Favreau. Speaking about how all this went down, she said:

So, since she sincerely thought she wasn’t getting the part, nerves were out of the equation. Well, that ended up working really well in her favor. That’s because, as we know, Katie Holmes wasn’t in Elf due to scheduling conflicts, according to Deschanel, so she was able to step in. Continuing to speak about getting the part, she said:

First of all, I love that they were able to shape Deschanel’s role in this great 2000s movie to her. I mean, that singing scene in the bathroom is iconic! However, it does make me wonder who Jovie would have been if Katie Holmes had played her. Would she still sing? Would she have been blonde? What would her relationship with Buddy look like?

I’m sure she would have done a great job too. However, I’m very happy that the 500 Days of Summer actress ended up with the gig. Elf is easily one of Will Ferrell’s funniest movies, and it’s one of her’s too. She’s amazing in it, and her chemistry with the SNL alum is irresistible.

It served as a pivotal moment in Zooey Deschanel’s career, too. She was 21 when she got Elf; at that point, she’d been working consistently since 1999. However, there’s no question that this film was one of her first signature projects. After that, she starred in a bunch of movies, including 500 Days of Summer. Then, in 2011, she started working on the hit show New Girl.

A lot of people dig getting all gussied up for Halloween even way past their childhood years, and it looks like Zooey Deschanel and Jonathan Scott are firmly among that crowd. The 500 Days of Summer lead and her HGTV star beau (who became engaged in 2023) appear to make a point of dressing up every year, and the notably named, home renovating Canadian twin recently took to Instagram to ask his followers a very important costume-related question. The 2025 TV schedule star (who’s said there’s no chance for a televised wedding for he and his New Girl fiancée) simply wanted to know whether or not people who are in relationships prefer to do their Halloween costuming together. Though I’m sure this is an intriguing poll for all the spooky season folks out there, what I’m much more interested in is how comfortable the Elf star looks in her Catwoman outfit. I never thought I’d say this in a million years, but…Could Zooey make for a purrrrfect version of the famed comic book anti-hero?

Obviously, we’ve had many actresses portray the DC cat burglar who frequently tangles (or tangos…if you know what I mean) with Batman over the decades, with notable talents like Eartha Kitt and Julie Newmar taking on the role in the ‘60s Batman TV show, and stars such as Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry, Anne Hathaway and (most recently) Zoë Kravitz (who’ll return with a “fun” version of the character in The Batman: Part II) holding the mantle on the big screen. However, why can’t someone who’s known for more down-to-earth roles wiggle into the catsuit for a film or television show?

Because of her aforementioned role as the actually-not-a-villain character, Summer Finn, we know Deschanel can play smart, complicated women, and her time in other projects has shown plenty of her quirky and deadpan comedic side. That’s something that she could add to the traditionally more serious, mysterious, and sexy character which would make her portrayal memorable and stand out from the pack. I wouldn’t mind a Catwoman who’s a teensy bit less “RAWR” and more “meowwwww,” would you?

Of course, even if we don’t get to see her as Catwoman at some point, it does look like she at least had fun wearing the cat suit for a bit.

Known as the Property Brothers, Jonathan and Drew Scott have shared a lot of milestones in their lives given they are twins and have been the co-hosts of their reality series for 14 seasons. But when it comes to getting married in the public eye, they're pretty easy to tell apart given Jonathan Scott’s recent comments on his upcoming marriage plans to Zooey Deschanel (which have been at a standstill for years).

Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel have been dating since 2019, and announced plans to tie the knot back in 2023. As we continue to wait for the sweet celebrity couple to hear wedding bells, Scott was asked if he’d be interested in televising his wedding like Drew Scott did back in 2018. In an interview with Swooon, Jonathan Scott was very matter-of-fact when it came to his thoughts on publicly saying “I do.” Apparently there’s absolutely no way it will happen. This comes after Drew Scott had a TLC wedding special called Drew and Linda Say I Do. In the Property Brothers special, the couple planned their dream weeklong Italian wedding with three months to prepare after being together for eight years.

Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel actually met while appearing on Carpool Karaoke: The Series, so it’s not like their relationship hasn’t been in the public eye already. They’ve also recreated Zooey’s famous 500 Days Of Summer scene and have kept fans apprised of their romance in the past six years they’ve been together. But agreeing to say their wedding vows in front of the world is a whole other situation, and I don’t blame the couple for opting out of what Drew Scott and Linda did.

The couple became engaged while taking a family vacation to Scotland. Jonathan Scott previously shared that he planned the special moment that a pipe band was playing their song, Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon,” while they were up on this “beautiful bluff overlooking the city.” While this magical moment was happening, her kids pulled up a banner that read “Will you marry me?” Obviously, the leading lady of the New Girl cast said yes!

Since then, we’ve heard from Jonathan Scott that there hasn’t been any update on their wedding because they’ve been “having a ton of fun” and not planning the big day quite yet. Funny enough, Jonathan Scott has faced some pressure from his brother Drew Scott to keep him in the loop about what they decide since their schedules are often so intertwined.

For now, the Property Brothers have a new series called Chasing The West that premieres on HGTV this Wednesday, July 30.

It’s no secret that the New Girl cast had a lot of fun together on set, and they still shout each other out. Zooey Deschanel and Max Greenfield are the latest to add to the classic Fox show’s discourse by shading former co-star Lamorne Morris while presenting at the SAG Awards show. The ongoing banter and gentle roasting likely fuel the hopes of many fans regarding the possibility of a New Girl revival. And with the hilarious 4D flatmates continuing this chemistry off-screen, I think we can safely say they can recapture the magic that made the show work.

Deschanel and Greenfield, who played Jessica Day and (Winston) Schmidt on New Girl, presented at the SAG Awards on Sunday evening. Via EW, the ex-castmates took the chance to rib to Morris, who played Winston Bishop, before introducing the Ensemble in a Comedy Series nominees.

After they greeted one another and reminisced about the show’s ending, the singer-actress asked The Neighborhood actor if he remembered or kept in touch with Morris. He had this to say about his relationship with his past peer:

Of course, all of this was said wryly and in good fun at the expense of the Saturday Night actor. Morris won an Emmy for his work in FX’s latest season of Fargo, and all of his past roommates (maybe except for Ferguson the cat) celebrated his big win. The whole saga of his nomination and win went viral due to his daughter’s adorable and funny responses. It all feels very fitting.

Humorously, the Elf actress chimed in saying she thought he was going to mention the Woke star’s impressive and quick weight loss journey.

The Valet actor agreed with her sentiment of including that in his thought, but all the same, is pleased for their former costar.

After the sweet and funny exchange about The Christmas Chronicles actor's post-New Girl achievements, the pair finished out the monologue in a very Schmidt-Jess fashion with wildly differing opinions about how an ensemble cast logistics should work. All of this to say, the revival needs to be in the works! And while it seems that most of the cast would be game for moving back to a modified 4D living situation, the decision may lie with Jake Johnson, per earlier comments from Lamorne Morris about the actor who played Nick Miller.

In the meantime, hearing the New Girl cast's insights into their fictional counterparts’ lives works. Everyone seemed to enjoy their time on set, to the point that Morris praised his time on the Fox show despite the rigors of a long-running series. I think fans are all hoping that Johnson is pulling an oddball Miller move here in not expressing complete interest in participating in any type of reprisal.

For now, New Girl fans can gladly file this Greenfield-Deschanel shade of Morris into the lovable cast moments after the 7-season series wrapped. Relieve all the 4D fun, or get into watching New Girl with a Hulu subscription.

Fans were thrilled last August, when HGTV star Jonathan Scott and actress Zooey Deschanel finally got engaged four years after they started dating. The “Harvest Moon” Scottish proposal sounded like something out of a dream, and if you’re wondering when we’ll see what kind of wedding ceremony the adorable duo has planned, you’re definitely not alone. As Jonathan joked about he and Deschanel still not setting a date, it was the sentiment from his twin brother Drew Scott that made me laugh.

The proposal was apparently a tearful affair, as Jonathan Scott got Zooey Deschanel’s two children involved during their family vacation in Glasgow, Scotland. The couple announced their engagement with three sweet words and then jaunted off to Paris to continue their celebrations in the City of Love. While it sounds like they’re still having a blast together more than a year later, they haven’t really dived into actually planning the wedding, and the Property Brothers star joked to US Weekly that he’s just as frustrated as anyone by that, saying:

I mean, who’s going to hate on that? The New Girl star and the contractor have always been one of the cutest celebrity couples, and to have him say wedding planning hasn’t progressed because they’re just having so much fun being together is almost too much to stand. I get his point, too, because getting all those dates and details nailed down is probably stressful enough to rival the biggest home renovation.

Leave it to Jonathan’s brother, then, to bring some real talk, as Drew Scott — who debuted a new show with his brother, Don’t Hate Your House with the Property Brothers — gave his take, saying the “people need to know”:

Real estate expert Drew Scott knows he’s going to be required to attend his twin brother’s wedding, and I’m willing to bet his responsibilities won’t end there, so it must be hard for him to make any long-term plans, knowing that Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel’s wedding could up-end it all. He apparently hasn’t been quiet about it either, as Jonathan confirmed:

That is so funny (and relatable to anyone with a sibling) that Drew Scott’s first reaction to his brother’s engagement was how inconvenient the whole ordeal is for his schedule.

It’s probably not fair, however, for Jonathan Scott to say they haven’t gotten anywhere with their plans. He’s spoken about how important his Scottish heritage is to him, and that’s something that’s likely to be incorporated into his and Zooey Deschanel’s nuptials. He’s also said he already “plays the role” of the Elf actress’ husband, so they really just want to have a big party with the people they love.

It may not affect our schedules the same way as it does Drew Scott’s, but I know fans are excited to see the couple get their chance to do that.

If you haven’t seen Zooey Deschanel in a rom-com, you are missing out. She always seems to play the perfect combination of a girl-next-door and witty manic-pixie-dream girl. She is THAT GIRL. And arguably her most beloved film is 500 Days of Summer, alongside equally adorable sweater-vest-wearing Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The two longtime friends are pitch perfect together in one of the best romantic comedies of all time, which is about to mark its 15th anniversary. Ahead of that occasion, Deschanel revealed how the film started a sweet ritual for her, and I couldn't love the rom-com more now.

While speaking with People during a recent interview, the Elf actress fondly reminisced about her time shooting the fan-favorite film film. Aside from talking up the film itself and her friendship with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, she talked about the seriously fun-sounding tradition he started:

Plenty of actors have their share of specific rituals when it comes to filming a new project, and some can be more tedious than others. However, Zooey Deschanel's is definitely one of the funnest that I've heard of. I'd imagine that a dance party is a great way for cast and crew members to decompress amid a film shoot. It's hard not to appreciate the fact that the actress has added this specific ritual to her production routine. And, if anything, now I'm also a little jealous that I can't take part in those little parties.

Filmed in 2009 during Zooey Deschanel’s peak movie era, this very late 2000s indie-coded rom-com remains one of the more financially successful entries within its genre.It portrays the classic trope, in which the two leads fall in love but life gets in the way. Right person, wrong time. Seriously, I think this movie walked so La La Land could run. (I could write a whole essay comparing those two movies but I’ll spare you.) Though it's one of the most beloved romantic comedies of all time, there are definitely a lot of differing opinions on the ending, given it's not-so-cheery ending. Still, I greatly enjoy the film and, now that I know the cast was having dance parties and really embracing the whimsical parts of a rom-com, that makes it even better for me.

Director Marc Webb also did a very good job romanticizing LA, even for the everyday young office employee. During her interview, the Yes, Man star said that was one of the best parts about filming the movie:

All in all, it's great to hear that the Trolls actress still loves this movie as much as her fans do, and this isn't the first time she has shown her appreciation for the film. It also seems that she has been living her own rom-com with boyfriend-turned-fiancée Jonathan Scott of Property Brothers fame. The two even recreated the famous 500 Days of Summer elevator scene by putting their own spin on it and went viral on TikTok a couple of years ago. I hope that as time goes on, Zooey Deschanel will continue to speak highly of her sweet rom-com as time goes on, and let's hope she shares clips from any future dance parties she has while filming.

ADHD or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder felt like a buzzword when it was first introduced to the mainstream, but slowly and surely, many in the world are learning more about it and helping erase the stigma that surrounds it. In fact, many successful actors have spoken about having it over the years, and as readers might suspect, they all have different ways of coping with it. 

Fortunately, those diagnosed today with ADHD have more advocates to look toward, and even fictional heroes like Percy Jackson who has the same struggles they might. There are also many big actors in Hollywood with upcoming movies in 2024 that have been open about their struggles with the condition and talked about how they cope with it. Today, we celebrate their success and how they've helped manage the struggles of ADHD, as well. 

Reneé Rapp Uses It To Help Her Creative Process

Reneé Rapp really exploded onto the Hollywood scene as Regina George in the cast of 2024's Mean Girls, and it's been onward and upward for her since then. The actress talked to Official Charts about her diagnosis of ADHD and the good and bad of dealing with it while also being a creative working in the industry: 

Rapp thrives when she's in her element, and considering she crushed playing one of the most iconic teen villains in one of the best movies of the 2000s, I think it's safe to say she's found ways to make her ADHD work for her. That said, she kept it real about struggling more when she's not in her element of acting and music-making, and that's a struggle I'm sure many can relate to. 

Ultimately, though, Rapp feels that she can use her ADHD as an asset even when it serves as an occasional hindrance. She went on to talk about how it comes to her aid in her profession, as well as some of the downsides: 

As one of the youngest on this list, it'll be great to see Reneé Rapp thrive and grow in Hollywood. We'll see how far she can climb and continue to balance the trials of being a young performer and ADHD at the same time. 

Channing Tatum Found Mentors To Learn From

Channing Tatum may have a ton of admirers and people who look up to him as he stars in the critically acclaimed Fly Me To The Moon, but there was a time when his confidence wasn't at the level it is now. Tatum mentioned in a New York Times interview (via People) that he struggled with ADHD and dyslexia when he was in school, and it led him to believe he wasn't a very smart person. Over time, however, he found it more helpful to change the way he learned by finding mentors and realized that he just had to break the mold of traditional learning to find success: 

The actor managed to find those mentors when he moved to New York for modeling, and lo and behold, he became the in-demand Hollywood star we see today. Despite his parents not being artistic people, he was able to learn and develop a craft despite feeling inadequate at a young age when it came to his studies. Quite an inspiring story, especially for younger readers experiencing those same struggles with education. 

Zooey Deschanel Does Crafts

Actress Zooey Deschanel is well-known in Hollywood, but what people may not know is that she, too, is diagnosed with ADHD. That hasn't stopped her from filming movies Almost Famous and Elf, or doing series like New Girl. So, how does she manage a busy career as an actress and ADHD? In a past blog post, she said she spends a lot of time doing crafts: 

Note the important distinction that Deschanel made when she said she likes to do small crafts she know she can complete. It's about focusing the mind for a few minutes and not trying to take on something that can prove as overwhelming to manage as whatever other tasks are planned for the day. Good to see she's found something to do, and maybe the resulting crafts can be a small addition to the houses her fiancé Jonathan Scott has renovated. 

Michelle Rodriguez Decided Medication Wasn't For Her

Fast & Furious star Michelle Rodriguez told Cosmopolitan Magazine in 2013 she was a person with ADHD but opted not to go on medication. The actress was open about her fears of how that decision would impact her future career goals, and feared it could hamper her beyond acting: 

Perhaps when she finally hangs up her role in the Fast & Furious franchise we will see her pursuing more projects behind the camera, whatever they may be. I know I'd love to see her do it, but if not, she still has a great career in acting. 

Will Smith Found Solutions To Things That Challenged Him

With no shortage of upcoming Will Smith movies on the way, it's safe to say the actor hasn't allowed his ADHD to slow him down. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the actor said his ADHD was a hindrance in school, and he had trouble focusing. As he grew older, he found solutions to those problems and found a way to make his struggles more manageable: 

When you're living life "Big Willie Style," there are always solutions to problems someone might have. Good on Smith for finding success and utilizing modern technology to find different ways to do the things he wants. 

Ryan Gosling Was Homeschooled After Struggling In A Traditional Enviornment

By now, it seems clear that many successful actors who had ADHD had their fair share of trouble with schoolwork. The actor has revealed in interviews that he was tested for ADHD and told EW school was a big struggle for him: 

Eventually, Gosling's mother pulled him out of school and put him in homeschooling. While he was never officially diagnosed, his inability to focus in school is a something that many with ADHD can relate to, and show that sometimes the answer is finding a different way to learn if traditional methods don't work. 

As seen above, there are many methods for treating ADHD, and people who found great success in life using a variety of different tools. Hopefully, we'll hear more about a lot of them throughout the rest of the year, which is just packed with exciting movies and shows on the horizon. 

Comedy legend Bob Newhart passed away at the age of 94. Known for his deadpan humor and stammering delivery, he knew how to make an audience laugh with his two sitcom shows and his Emmy Award-winning performance in The Big Bang Theory. Of course, we can’t forget about the time Newhart played Papa Elf in Elf and neither can his co-star Zooey Deschanel who described him as “wonderful” in her tribute to him.

The cast of Elf had superb comedy talent that made this holiday flick so memorable. You had Will Ferrell as Buddy who was a human raised in the North Pole, Bob Newhart as Papa Elf who adopts Buddy, and Zooey Deschanel as Jovie who falls for Buddy. The New Girl actress paid tribute to Newhart in Variety who described her experience with the stand-up comic as nothing short of “wonderful:”

Zooey Deschanel must have felt incredibly fortunate to work with such a talent as Bob Newhart. In one of his best movies Elf, the Golden Globe winner portrayed a kind soul in Papa Elf who took Buddy under his wing as he snuck into Santa’s bag from the orphanage. He brought love to Buddy and trained him as a hardworking elf with the knowledge of how to operate Santa’s sleigh.

While we can argue that Papa Elf should have told Buddy about his origins sooner, he’s still a Christmas movie dad I’d like to spend the holidays with. Whereas Buddy’s biological father Walter Hobbs couldn’t accept Buddy’s holiday optimism and quirks at first, Papa Elf had unconditional love and acceptance for his adoptive son all the way through.

Bob Newhart clearly loved Papa Elf so much that he was willing to reprise his iconic role for a local TV commercial. The Kentucky Lottery advertisement had Newhart back in the Papa Elf costume leading a focus group for potential Christmas gifts. Seeing Newhart don the green-and-white elf costume again can’t help but bring a smile to your face.

Like Zooey Deschanel, many other celebrities paid tribute to Bob Newhart after his death. Stars like Mark Hamill and Newhart's Big Bang Theory co-star Mayim Bialik reflected on their times watching Newhart’s sitcoms like The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart and what a one-of-a-kind talent he was.

In Judd Apatow’s tribute, he mentioned that the Grammy Award winner inspired him to be a comedy writer. Apatow also felt lucky to work with Bob Newhart on the short documentary Bob & Don: A Love Story about his friendship with comedian Don Rickles. Whether celebrities knew him by watching his series or by getting to work with him, Newhart left a big impact on the entertainment industry and those who knew him.

After the death of Bob Newhart, Zooey Deschanel tributed her “wonderful” Elf co-star who showed generosity and kindness working on the holiday movie together. The talented television star will truly be missed. Make sure to see the 2024 movie release of Deschanel’s new movie Harold and the Purple Crayon in theaters on August 2nd.

Over the more than half century of Bob Newhart's career in showbiz, he became a sitcom legend and movie scene-stealer. It's therefore not surprising that many stars of the small and large screen wasted no time in paying tribute to the actor following his death at the age of 94. Nothing could be more appropriate for the man who was the lead of more than one of the best sitcoms of all time!

Mark Hamill may be best known for his work on the big screen as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise, but like Newhart, the majority of his credits are actually television, mostly for voice work on projects like Batman: The Animated Series. With the hashtag #RIP, the actor nodded to Newhart and The Bob Newhart Show when he posted this on X (formerly known as Twitter):

Mayim Bialik certainly knows her way around a sitcom after Blossom and The Big Bang Theory, with Bob Newhart guest-starring on the latter across six episodes. There's a reason why he ranks among that show's greatest guest stars and earned a spot in the final season! In a statement to People about the late actor, Bialik said:

Mayim Bialik wasn't the only Big Bang Theory alum to open up in the wake of Bob Newhart's death. Kaley Cuoco, who played Penny on all twelve seasons of the sitcom, wrote in an Instagram Story:

While Bob Newhart earned legend status largely due to all of his success on television, one of his most beloved projects has to be as part of Elf cast. Christmas movie co-star Zooey Deschanel said in a statement:

Filmmaker Judd Apatow also had a lot to say in tribute of Newhart. On X, he posted "Bob Newhart made the world a better place for a really long time," and went further in a statement to People:

Comedian and politician Al Franken shared his own perspective on working with Newhart, citing when the actor hosted Saturday Night Live during his tenure on the NBC sketch comedy show. Franken wrote on X:

While the loss of Bob Newhart is certainly sad, it's also heartwarming to see so many stars come out to share stories of what he meant to them, whether they worked with him or not. His death at the age of 94 was first reported on July 18.

It was a long time coming when HGTV star Jonathan Scott and The New Girl’s Zooey Deschanel got engaged in August 2023, four years after their adorable courtship started when they met on an episode of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke. Fans have loved to follow the couple’s relationship, seeing Scott be the Prince Charming in Deschanel’s fairytale, and the story just keeps getting better. The Property Brother opened up about the details of his “Harvest Moon”-themed proposal during a family vacation to Scotland.

People were so excited when they learned that Jonathan Scott had finally put a ring on it during a getaway to the country where his father grew up. Now we know just what went into the Property Brothers proposal, as Scott revealed all the butterfly-inducing details of that special day. He told Page Six:  

It’s so special that Jonathan Scott chose to ask Zooey Deschanel to marry him in Scotland, with the country meaning so much to his family. It speaks volumes about their relationship, especially knowing that not all parts of his Scottish heritage were celebrated in his first marriage. Scott was also sure to include 8-year-old Elsie and 6-year-old Charlie — Deschanel’s children with ex-husband Jacob Pechenik — in the proposal. The home renovation star continued: 

I can only imagine what was going through the Elf star’s mind when the guitarist started to play “Harvest Moon.” She had to know at that point that it was no coincidence, and then to have her children be the ones to actually pop the question is the sweetest! It was apparently just as emotional as it sounds, and Jonathan Scott said: 

If the wedding is a “disaster” because Jonathan Scott can’t stop crying through his happy tears, that will only make us love them more. The Celebrity IOU star has said he felt “pressure” from his fans to marry Zooey Deschanel, and it was probably really important that he make the proposal as special as possible. In my opinion he did a great job, and the icing on the cake was a post-engagement trip to Paris to celebrate. 

Knowing what Jonathan Scott pulled off for the engagement, now I can’t wait to see what a Property Brothers wedding looks like. 

There was a time when music videos were as important as the radio in promoting the hottest artists and songs of the day. Back in the '80s and '90s, MTV was one of the most powerful cultural forces in the country, and that was reflected in how many stars you can spot in videos from the day. 

Sometimes, they were already huge stars, like Robin Williams and Chevy Chase, other times, they were actors looking to get their break and now, years later, we can marvel at their humble beginnings. This is a list of famous people in videos from the zenith of MTV highlights both.

Alicia Silverstone - "Cryin'"

Alicia Silverstone first got famous for starring in videos, specifically Aerosmith videos. The Clueless star appeared in three videos for the Boston rockers, the first for the song "Cryin'", then later showing up in the videos for "Amazing," alongside Dazed & Confused cast member Jason London. Silverstone's final appearance, and maybe the most famous video, was for the song "Crazy," alongside Steven Tyler's daughter, Liv Tyler. 

Courteney Cox - "Dancing In The Dark"

One of the most famous examples of a star getting her first break in a music video is, of course, Friends star Courteney Cox in the video for Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing In The Dark." The video, which came out in 1984, was directed by Brian De Palma and, according to Cox, she was one of several women Springsteen could have picked out of the audience, and it was random that he chose her. What kismit! 

Cindy Crawford - "Freedom '90"

Director David Fincher, who has had quite an amazing career in film, started in music videos. One of those videos, George Michaels' "Freedom '90," was challenging because Michaels told Fincher he wasn't going to appear in the video. Fincher decided to cast a bevy of famous supermodels to lip-sync the song, including Cindy Crawford in a bathtub. 

Eva Mendes - "Miami"

In 1998, a young actress from Miami was cast in a video for the Will Smith song, "Miami." Eva Mendes had starred in one direct-to-video movie at that point and was that actress. It would be another three years before her breakout role in Training Day. It's a brief moment in the video, as she drove her convertible next to Smith's on the causeway to Miami Beach.

In 1993, Janet Jackson was on top of the world. Her fifth album, janet. was another huge hit, selling millions of copies, partly on the strength of the single, "That's the Way Love Goes." Little did anyone know at the time that one of the extras in the video would go on to a career that eclipsed even Jackson's, a then-unknown Jennifer Lopez. 

Matt LeBlanc - "Miracle"

Bon Jovi's "Miracle" is, let's be frank, not the New Jersey legends' best work. One thing they did get right was the casting for the video. Matt LeBlanc was a young actor and model just starting out on a career, so while his job is really only to look good in this video, he certainly does. It would be a few more years before America was introduced to his comedic chops too. 

Hugh Laurie - "Walking On Broken Glass"

By the time Hugh Laurie appeared in the video for Annie Lennox's "Walking on Broken Glass" in 1992, he was already very famous in the UK. It would be a few more years until the legendary TV show House would debut in the US, making Laurie a household name on both sides of the pond. John Malkovich also stars in the video, reminding fans of his role in Dangerous Liaisons. 

Angelina Jolie - "Wondering"

Angelina Jolie was a model in Hollywood from her teen years on, so it's no wonder she would have a few videos of her resume, including The Rolling Stones' video for "Has Anybody Seen My Baby," but it is surprising to see her in a video for the Athens, GA-based jam band Widespread Panic's song "Wondering" from 1993. Jolie also appears on the cover of the band's album Everyday, which includes "Wondering."

Zooey Deschanel - "She's Got Issues"

Zooey Deschanel is as successful in music, with her duo She & Him as she is on the big screen, so of course she has an early credit in a music video. Deschanel appears with fiery red hair in the video for "She's Got Issues" by The Offspring. 

Naomi Campbell - "Is This Love"

Bob Marley died over four decades ago, but his legacy is as big as ever, with the release of the biopic One Love in 2024. Back in the day, the reggae superstar filmed a video in London for his song "Is This Love" featuring a couple of local kids, including a 7-year-old Naomi Campbell!  

Macaulay Culkin - "Black Or White"

Michael Jackson redefined what a music video could be with "Thriller" and after that, he often released short films that were much more than just a song, and often they had big stars in them. For "Black or White" in 1991, MJ brought in Macaulay Culkin and George Wendt to play father and son, for example. 

Christina Hendricks - "One Hit Wonder"

Long before Christina Hendricks hit the big time with her role in Mad Men, she was a model and struggling actor in the '90s. One of her earliest roles, way back in 1998, was in the video for "One Hit Wonder" by Everclear. Luckily for all of us, that wasn't her only hit. 

Matthew McConaughey - "Walkaway Joe"

Alright, alright, alright, we'll concede that Dazed and Confused is what made Matthew McConaughey famous, but before that, he appeared in Trisha Yearwood's video for her hit "Walkaway Joe," playing the titular character of the song. 

Wesley Snipes - "Bad"

For the second single, "Bad" from his album of the same name, Micheal Jackson teamed up with Martin Scorsese to make an 18-minute short film for the video. In the video, Jackson famously has a dance-off with his rivals in a New York subway station. One of the baddies is none other than Wesley Snipes, who only had a few credits under his belt previously. 

Patrick Swayze - "Rosanna"

Toto's song "Rosanna" is famously about Rosanna Arquette. Less well-known is that if you watch the video closely, you'll notice a familiar face as one of the West Side Story-like dancers. Patrick Swayze, one year before his big break in The Outsiders is one of the dancers. In an even cooler bit of trivia, another one of the uncredited dancers in the video is Cynthia Rhodes, who would co-star as Swayze's first dance partner, Penny, in Dirty Dancing. 

Elijah Wood - "Forever Your Girl"

Elijah Wood has been working in Hollywood forever. He started as a child actor in films like Back to the Future II and The Good Sun, but before those even, he had a part in Paula Abdul's video for "Forever Your Girl" in 1989. 

Chevy Chase - "You Can Call Me Al"

Chevy Chase was one of the biggest stars on the planet in 1986 when he starred in the video for "You Can Call Me Al" with his buddy Paul Simon. It is, no lie, one of Chase's best performances, and it's impossible not to crack up at his facial expressions and physical comedy in the video. 

Johnny Depp - "Into The Great Wide Open"

Johnny Depp has always wanted to be a rock star, so it was a great move by Tom Petty to get him to play the part of one in the video for "Into The Great Wide Open" in 1991. The video also stars the legendary Faye Dunaway and Gabrielle Anwar. 

Jennifer Connelly - "I Drove All Night"

The late, great Roy Orbison found almost as much fame after he died as he found in life. Two albums of all-new songs were released posthumously and one song, "I Drove All Night," released in 1992, featured Jennifer Connelly alongside Jason Priestly, in the video, along with Orbison in grainy images of an old TV appearance. 

Kirsten Dunst - "I Knew I Loved You"

Does anybody remember the band Savage Garden? The Aussie duo had a string of huge hits in the late '90s, including the song "I Knew I Loved You" which features Kirsten Dunst as a woman on a subway with whom the lead singer, Darren Hayes, is in love. 

Robin Williams - "Don't Worry, Be Happy"

Bobby McFerrin's 1988 song "Don't Worry, Be Happy" has to be one of the most surprising #1 hits of all time. The song was huge when it came out, and went on to win three Grammys. Someone must have had an inkling though, because superstar Robin Williams co-stars in the video with McFerrin. 

Kim Basinger - "Last Dance With Mary Jane"

Tom Petty made some legendary videos during his career, but the strangest has to be the one for "Last Dance With Mary Jane" which features Kim Basinger playing a corpse, dressed up as a bride. Great song, but a very weird video.

Keanu Reeves - "Rush, Rush"

1991 was a big year for Keanu Reeves. Not only did he star in Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey and Point Break, but he also appeared as a James Dean-like character in the video for "Rush, Rush" by Paula Abdul. 

Eddie Murphy - "Do You Remember The Time"

In case you've forgotten just how huge Michael Jackson was in the early '90s, remember there was a time he could premiere a video on MTV, BET, and Fox all at the same time. The video starred Jackson, of course, along with Eddie Murphy and Iman as ancient Egyptian royalty. Magic Johnson also appeared. 

Katie Holmes - "Tongue Tied"

Katie Holmes' career was just starting to take off in 1999 with her starring turn on Dawson's Creek. She also found some time to appear in the video for the song "Tongue Tied" by pop punk band Eve 6. It's not the last time Holmes has appeared in a video, either. A year later, in 2000, she starred with Micheal Douglas and others in a Bob Dylan video. 

Winona Ryder - "Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant with My Two-Headed Love Child"

By far the award for the strangest appearance on this list goes to Winona Ryder in the video for Mojo Nixon's song "Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant with My Two-Headed Love Child." Leave it to the late Nixon for coming up with the most ridiculous premise for a song, then landing a star like Ryder to star in the video in 1989, the same year she appeared in Heathers. 

RuPaul - "Love Shack"

If one were to guess which 1980s video to expect a RuPaul appearance, the smart money would be a B-52's video. That's exactly what happened in 1989 when RuPaul popped up very briefly in the video for "Love Shack" as a dancer and partygoer. He wasn't close to famous yet, but he was good friends with the band and he fits right into the campiness of the video. 

Benicio del Toro - "La Isla Bonita"

Benicio del Toro made his big screen debut in 1988 in Pee Wee's Big Top, but a year earlier, he was one of the extras in the video for Madonna's "La Isla Bonita." He is way in the background and can only be clearly seen in one shot, but when you watch the video, it's unmistakenly del Toro. 

Liv Tyler - "Crazy"

According to Liv Tyler, she didn't meet her biological father, Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler, until she was eight, and didn't know he was her father for another few years. Still, by the time she starred in the video for "Crazy," they had developed a healthy relationship, and the video, in which she co-stars with Alicia Silverstone, launched her career.

Captain Lou Albano - "Girls Just Want To Have Fun"

Cyndi Lauper was one of the biggest breakout stars of early MTV and for good reason. The low-budget video for her debut single, "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" featured a quirky cast that included her mother (playing her mother), her lawyer, and wrestling star "Captain" Lou Albano as her father. It's a video as fun as the song and it was played on repeat in those early MTV days. 

John Goodman - "Wild Wild Life"

The song "Wild Wild Life" by The Talking Heads was part of their soundtrack for the David Byrne-directed film True Stories. For the video, he recruited some of the people who appear in the film, including John Goodman, who lip-syncs along with the song in a karaoke bar. 

LeVar Burton - "Word Up"

LeVar Burton first found fame as Kunta Kinte in Roots, one of the most memorable performances by any actor, ever. About a decade later, between Roots and Star Trek: The Next Generation, Burton popped up in the video for "Word Up" by Cameo, playing a police officer trying to arrest the band. 

One video we left off this list because it's just too big a list on its own is the video for Ghostbusters which, in addition to the stars of the film also includes Chevy Chase, Danny Devito, Peter Falk, Al Franken, John Candy, and more. It's all too much to add to his list of some of the coolest appearances of stars in music videos! 

Movies surrounding romance have always been popular, although audiences can end up taking the side of certain characters once things go wrong. Case in point: 500 Days of Summer, which I think is one of the best romantic comedies of all time. The 2009 movie follows the relationship of Tom and Summer, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel respectively. Although there's been much debate about the movie's ending over the years. Here's the story behind 500 Days of Summer's ending, and why Zooey Deschanel's title character isn't actually the villain.

The story of 500 Days of Summer (which is available with a Hulu subscription) is told in a non-linear fashion, with the story jumping to various points of Tom's relationship with her. He's head over heels immediately, although Deschanel's romantic lead makes it clear that she's not looking for a relationship. But the two eventually spent time together, before things go awry. 

At first audiences might be on Tom's side, as the film is told through his perspective. But 500 Days of Summer is meant to be re-watched, as the movie's third act offers context over why Summer was unable to really be happy with him. Still, there are some naysayers out there who have claimed that Summer is the villain of the movie... even though she makes her intentions crystal clear from the beginning. 

In the end it was Tom's own fault for trying to make Summer be with him, despite the fact that she said she didn't want to be in a committed relationship. Zooey Deschanel has defended her character for years, and explained to The Guardian why those Summer haters ultimately got the message of the film wrong. In her words:

Perspective is a big theme to 500 Days of Summer, particularly in the movie's latter half. Tom felt like Summer was opening up to him because she was in love, and he assumed they'd be together for the long haul. But really it's his own obsession and hope that are clouding his judgement. Perhaps there is no clearer example of this than the movie's reality vs. expectations sequence, which reveals how much JGL's character was in his own head. You can re-watch that scene below:

While it's natural for romantic-comedy audiences to want to see the couple end up together in the end that's often not how the real world works. That's why 500 Day of Summer is so controversial, but also why I love re-watching it so much. Perspective isn't always reality, and one's feelings aren't facts.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has defended summer himself a number of times, also maintaining that Summer isn't the villain in the end. In an interview with Playboy (via HuffPost), he got honest about Tom's delusions in the film, offering:

Talk about a mic drop moment. While JGL might appreciate the support from moviegoers, he thinks that those who take his side about 500 Days of Summer might be missing the point. Tom doesn't listen to Summer, and much of their whirlwind relationship is in his head. And that's no way to enter into a partnership. 

Of course, newcomers to 500 Days of Summer might take Tom's side, so this debate will likely continue for years to come. But I love the ending of the movie, and re-play it anytime I'm in a relationship crisis. After all, expectations and reality don't always match up.

Entertainers are entertainers. There are singers who can act, and there are actors who can sing. While the world is full of the former crossing over successfully, the latter is less successful, but that doesn't mean they aren't great singers, so here's our list of actors that have tried singing, whether they were hits or not. 

Bruce Willis

In 1987 Bruce Willis was at the top of his game. A year before everyone's favorite Christmas movie, Die Hard, came out, Willis did a made-for-HBO movie called The Return of Bruno where he played a blues singer. Willis spun that into an album of the same name and his singing career was off. While it's actually a decent album, the two follow-ups were bombs and that was where things pretty much ended for his singing career. 

Jennifer Love Hewitt

Jennifer Love Hewitt has been singing as long as she's been performing on screen. As a ten-year-old, Hewitt sang backup on the hit song "Toy Soldiers" by Martika, and at 12 she recorded her first album. She has a great voice, but she's never seen real crossover success. 

Don Johnson

Miami Vice was a monster hit in the mid-'80s and Don Johnson spun that into a record deal. He recorded his first album, Heartbeat, in 1986 and it was actually a moderate success, especially in Germany. His follow-up, Let It Roll also sold well in Europe, but didn't chart in the US, so his brief-though-somewhat-successful career as a singer was over. 

Jada Pinkett Smith

Did you know that Jada Pinkett Smith sang in a Nu Metal band in the early aughts? Yep, a band she formed called Wicked Wisdom even toured with Ozzfest and opened for Britney Spears. Pinkett is a solid singer and the band is very good, but it was short-lived, releasing just two albums, the last in 2006. 

Russell Crowe

Russell Crowe has been playing guitar and singing rock and roll for decades. He continues to occasionally play concerts, usually for charity and every once in a while he'll show up on stage with a big star. Like when he joined fellow Aussie Keith Urban in 2012 to play some Johnny Cash. 

Jamie Foxx

Jamie Foxx is the rare example of an actor having a very successful music career as well. He's got platinum albums, he's won a Grammy, and he'll forever be known for his guest spot in Kanye West's "Gold Digger." 

Burt Reynolds

Burt Reynolds sang in the musical At Long Last Love, and he once did a duet in a movie with the legend herself, Dolly Parton. Before all that though, he attempted to find a hit in the music business when he released a country album called Ask Me What I Am in 1973. I'm the biggest Burt Reynolds fan you'll ever meet and even I can admit it's a pretty rough album. 

Zooey Deschanel

When M. Ward first heard Zooey Deschanel sing in Elf, he was amazed. Later he learned she also wrote and played music. That was enough to start the duo She & Him, and Ward and Deschanel have been working on the project off and one for 15 years now. Together they've released seven successful albums, the latest a tribute to Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson that is very, very good. Deschanel even met her boyfriend Jonathon Scott while singing on Car Pool Karaoke. 

Jeremy Renner

As if Jeremy Renner's inspiring recovery from a snow plow accident isn't enough, the multitalented star has also released his first couple of EPs over the last few years. The Avengers star is a multi-instrumentalist and can sing too. There's almost nothing he can't do, it seems. 

William Shatner

It's always been a little hard to tell if William Shatner's music career is serious, or a joke. At times it seems like it could be either. One thing I can say about it is that if you've never heard Shatner's version of Pulp's "Common People", seek it out, it is truly excellent. 

Eddie Murphy

Very early in this career, Eddie Murphy started singing comedy songs on his albums. That inspired him to take a shot a serious music and his first single "Party All The Time" was a hit. It reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Sadly, that would be the high point for the actor's music career.  

Corey Feldman

You have to appreciate how hard Corey Feldman is trying to make a music career take off. He tours a lot, playing live, and giving it his all in every performance. For it, he takes an endless amount of grief, but that just makes us root a little harder for him. The music isn't for me, but I applaud the effort. 

Emma Roberts

Emma Roberts is Hollywood royalty who got her first really big break (though not her first gig, that was in Blow) on the Nickelodeon show Unfabulous. For the show, where she played a middle school singer/songwriter, she recorded quite a bit of music and even released an album. In the end, it was her acting that took off and music took a backseat. At least so far. 

Jared Leto

Obviously, Jared Leto has to be on this list. His band, Thirty Seconds to Mars, which he formed with his brother in 1998, is wildly successful. They've sold more than 15 million albums and played sold-out shows around the world. He's by far the most successful musician on this list. 

Alyssa Milano

Alyssa Milano's music career never made much of a wave in the U.S., but in Japan, she was actually really popular. She released four albums on a Japanese record label and one even went platinum. It's a small tidbit of her career that doesn't get talked about much. 

Tom Hardy

Before Tom Hardy landed the first role of his career in Black Hawk Down in 2001, the British actor took a swing at a rap career. He recorded a mixtape called Tommy No 1 and Eddie Too Tall in 1999, though it didn't see the light of day until well after Hardy became famous, in 2018. It's actually pretty good too. 

Lindsay Lohan

Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson's first album, Anywhere I Lay My Head, released in 1998, features members of TV on the Radio, and even David Bowie sings on two tracks. Most of the songs were written or co-written by the great Tom Waits. Unfortunately, it just didn't sell all that well. Her follow-up, Break Up, recorded with Pete Yorn sold a little better, but not enough to sustain more of a career in music. She also released a song in 2015 called "Candy" with a short-lived band, The Singles, with Este Haim.

Hayden Panettiere

On Nashville, Hayden Panettiere played a country singer/songwriter living in Nashville, so naturally, she sang a lot on the show. She even recorded and released a few songs from the show. Panettiere was also nominated for a Grammy early in her career for her singing parts in A Bug's Life. In 2008, she branched out with a more pop-oriented sound and while she undoubtedly has some serious singing chops, the song "Wake Up Call" is more famous today for the video starring herself and Sebastian Stan. 

Joe Pesci

When you think of performers with silky smooth voices, Joe Pesci probably isn't the first name that comes to mind. Still, the Goodfellas star has been singing publicly since the 1960s when he released an album called Little Joe Sure Can Sing! After the huge success of My Cousin Vinny, Pesci released another album sort of in character, called Vincent LaGuardia Gambini Sings Just for You which is part comedy, part serious. It's not all that great, but he's not a bad singer. 

Kevin Bacon

The Bacon Brothers, Micheal and Kevin Bacon have been recording and touring for almost 30 years now. It's always been a passion for the Footloose star and it's clear he takes the band as seriously as he takes his acting. 

Robert Downey, Jr.

The whole world for Robert Downey, Jr. changed in 2008 when the first Iron Man was released. Downey had been a star for years, but the role took him to world superstardom. Right before that, he recorded his first album, 2006's The Futurist. The album had disappointing sales, and Downey dedicated his working life to the MCU and never seemed to find time for a follow-up.  

Steven Seagal

Like most things Steven Seagal does these days, his music career is pretty odd. He's a guitar player and blues singer who has released two albums and still plays live occasionally. While the music is not terrible by any means, it's also not all that interesting. 

Brie Larson

Brie Larson started in the music business when she was just 16. She was signed by Casablanca Records and recorded an album called Finally Out of P.E. However, the Marvels star eventually moved her focus to her acting career. She still occasionally plays guitar and sings little ditties on her YouTube page. 

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow's singing has mostly been attached to her acting career, with her most famous song, "Country Strong" coming from the soundtrack of the movie of the same name. Paltrow does all the singing herself, and it's actually pretty great. She also flirted with more music-related stuff earlier in her career, including recording a duet with Huey Lewis. She should consider doing more! 

Milla Jovovich

The 1990s were full of ethereal singers like Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star and Milla Jovovich's brief foray into music fit very well in that style. Her breathy style was very much of the time. One song that I can certainly recommend is her version of Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love" from the soundtrack to Million Dollar Hotel.

Florence Pugh

Florence Pugh started her career as singer called Flossie Rose on a YouTube channel in the early 2010s. Once her acting career took off, her music took a backseat, but many of the videos are still available. There is some interesting stuff there, even if it's pretty simple, as she was just a teenager at the time. 

Juliette Lewis

Juliette Lewis has had a huge career revival with her powerhouse performance in Yellowjackets, but all in her professional life, she's also been a singer. Her band, Julliette and the Licks, has been recording and playing live for almost 30 years now and as you'd expect, it's raw and in your face. 

Lucy Hale

Lucy Hale acts, hosts big TV specials, and sings. In fact, her debut album (and to date only album), Road Between, reached as high as #4 on the Billboard Country charts in 2014. It's certainly good enough for a follow-up, so maybe someday we'll get one. 

Joey Lawrence

No one else quite defines the 1990s the way Joey Lawrence does. The star of Blossom was a teen heartthrob and adorned the walls of high school girls across the country. It only makes sense he would try out a music career to capitalize on his fame. Sadly, his ambition wasn't matched by album sales. 

Scott Baio

Scott Baio starred in two huge shows in the '70s and '80s. First as Chachi on Happy Days then as the title character on Charles in Charge. Somewhere he found time to record two albums for RCA Records, but neither sold well and his music career fizzled out. 

David Duchovny

The truth is out there, and so is David Duchovny's budding musical career. He's only been at it for a few years, but he's released three albums and while the critics haven't loved his music, they haven't hated it either. He's clearly passionate about it, and it's refreshing that his albums are mostly original tunes. 

Breaking into music is hard, and while celebrities have a few built-in advantages, they don't guarantee success. For every Jared Leto, there is a Robert Downey, Jr. Still, it's always fun to hear what some of these stars have to offer, usually it's better than you expect, even when it's not great. 

After Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel finally got engaged, the two are preparing to start their next chapter. The Property Brother and New Girl alum had been dating for a few years after meeting on Carpool Karaoke. Now, a fate meeting has turned into the rest of their lives, even if Scott did previously feel “pressure” to marry his then-girlfriend. Since this is his second marriage, it makes sense. Planning a wedding is not easy, but having discussions about what both spouses want makes it a tad easier. It’s hard when you have that sort of history where you’ve been hurt before because you’re so scared of it happening again. However, Scott and Deschanel seem like they are doing everything right and are as in love as ever. Having previous experience helps because they likely know what to look out for and what not to do.

While Jessica Day was still riding the will-they-won’t-they tides with Jake Johnson’s Nick Miller in the series itself, Zooey Deschanel was actually rather pregnant in real life and needed to go on maternity leave as the network series needed to remain on schedule with weekly episodes on FOX. That’s where Megan Fox was written in. The show’s creator Elizabeth Meriwether spoke to the decision to TV Insider at the time, saying this: 

As fans of the series may remember, when Jess was brought on a major jury case, the loft decided to rent out her room as an Airbnb to pay for Schmidt’s bachelor party. The couple of episodes without a “New Girl” at all Meriwether referred to was Season 5, Episode 4 “No Girl,” where the hilarious Fred Armisen plays a whimsical temporary roommate and Episode 6 “Bob & Carol & Nick & Schmidt” became a hilarious highlight where Cece and Winston become best friends as he goes with her wedding dress shopping. 

How Long Did Megan Fox Replace Zooey Deschanel For? 

While Megan Fox’s casting was initially a way for the series to keep things going without Zooey Deschanel as she welcomed a child, the actress ended up being a major character in New Girl. Fox ended up starring in seven episodes in Season 5 before returning for Season 6 for eight episodes. Merriweather shared why Fox was her choice to replace Jess back in 2016 with these words: 

Megan Fox’s Reagan was definitely the opposite of Jess’s craft-loving, sing-songy personality. It actually provided ways for the other characters to build and grow in new and hilarious ways. 

How Reagan Ultimately Enhanced New Girl 

Reagan may have never learned the rules of True American, but she was a major love interest for Nick Miller that ultimately led to Jess and Nick’s endgame romance we were all rooting for. Fox was also genuinely funny in the series and really gelled with the cast’s personalities in fun ways. While one might not have seen Fox prior as a comedy actress, New Girl showed them wrong thanks to her dry, but very on point humor.

While the addition of Megan Fox at first may have been a temporary solution due to Zooey Deschanel’s pregnancy, it turned into a great move for the series that is really fun to see roll out on a rewatch. Ever since True American made its debut on New Girl in 2012, I’ve been baffled by it. Every time I watch the show I find myself thinking about how this nonsensical game could be played in real life, and I’d ponder how on Earth they came up with one of the best inside jokes from New Girl.

It turns out there are answers to both these questions about the gag that involved all of New Girl’s hilarious characters, and I’ve got the history for you. So, if you are looking to play the game at the center of some of New Girl’s best episodes or if you just want to know how it came into existence, keep reading. 

How To Play True American 

Now, the “rules” in the show are loose, at best. However, they are explained by the characters. So, here’s a breakdown from Jess and Winston about how to play Ture American circa Season 1, Episode 20 of New Girl: 

Jess: It starts off, there are four zones. An alternate zone is a crazy zone. 

Winston: There’s a trail of chairs, but the floor is lava. 

Jess: [Pointing at lots of beer] These are the pawns they’re the soldiers of the secret order. [Grabs a bottle of Jack Daniels] This is the king of the castle.  

Winston: Now, remember, everything you hear in True American is a lie, knock on wood.

Jess: And it starts with a shotgun tip-off. 

My understanding after this point is that the goal is to get to the castle without touching the ground. The New Girl creator Elizabeth Meriwether put True American’s rules in the simplest form when she jokingly said this during a panel for The Paley Center for Media in 2014:

However, fans have created legit rules for Ture American, and unlike the show, they actually create a semi-cohesive and playable game. While there is even a WikiHow on how to play this silly drinking game, True American Rules.com and Wide Open Country provided the most common and conscience methods of play. Here are the basics:

The Setup: You need to create The Castle and The Zones. The Castle is made up of a big bottle of liquor in the middle with beer cans lined up in four lines that stem from the bottle. The big bottle is the king, and the beer are the pawns. The lines created by the beer cans also show you each zone. Which brings me to the Zones. These are four quadrants and each needs five pieces of furniture or items to stand on in them – because the floor is lava. You can only take a pawn by standing on the item closest to The Castle in each respective zone, other than that, I'm not quite sure what the point of the zones are.  

Starting The Game: The players have a shotgun contest to determine who goes first. Then, the person who won yells "One, two three, JFK!" And the rest yell "FDR" and the game begins with players grabbing a pawn and retreating to a piece of furniture in one of the zones. 

Playing The Game: Players take turns moving. On a person's turn, they are allowed to move one space, and other players win their moves by either holding up a number no one else chooses, completing a quote about American history or figuring out the commonality between two things the person names. However, whoever is on their turn gets to decide which game is played. Also, every player must have at least one pawn and no more than three pawns in their hand at all times. 

Losing: If you don’t have a beer, and you get caught, you lose. The same goes for if you step on the floor. 

Winning: When you are at the spot closest to the castle you can grab a pawn. You play until all pawns are gone and you are able to take a drink out of the King. 

While I’ve just laid out a lot of rules that fans have created to play True American. At its core, I think all you really need to know is the floor is lava, and you better be ready to scream “JFK! FDR!”

The History Behind New Girl’s True American

In Season 1 of New Girl, Jess brings home an older boyfriend, played by Dermot Mulroney. So, to bring him into the story and to show his maturity level, the writers came up with Ture American, according to Bustle. Loosely based on a “floor is lava” like game writer Lesley Wake Webster used to play in college, the team decided to add it into the show, and intentionally didn’t give it any real rules. Luvh Rakhe, a writer and co-executive producer, elaborated on why they did this, saying:

So, the script didn’t have any rules at all, and writer Berkley Johnson said they wrote it around 2 a.m. with Rakhe, and they were “just typing, ‘They walk on pillows, they turn some stools upside down and use them as boots.”

While there clearly are no rules, it's been claimed that there are. So, after disputing a claim that there are rules to True American, Zooey Deschanel explained to The Paley Center for Media in 2014  how the game manifested itself while they were shooting:

In the Bustle article, Deschanel also said the screaming of “1,2,3,4, JFK, FDR” and “George Washington, Cherry Tree” was her idea. It was confirmed that the numbers on the forehead were always a rule too, and the New Girl cast had a lot of say in how the game was ultimately portrayed on screen. According to Lamorne Morris who played Winston:

After Season 1, True American made subsequent appearances in almost every other season (see the list of episodes the game is featured in below), and each time the game got messier and funnier.

• Season 1, Episode 20 “Normal” 
• Season 2, Episode 15 “Cooler” 
• Season 3, Episode 20 “Mars Landing” 
• Season 5, Episode 21 “Wedding Eve” 
• Season 7, Episode 8 “Engram Pattersky” 

They never really found a concrete way to play True American, it was simply chaos on set. According to Jake Johnson, who played Nick, anything could happen while shooting the drinking game. He explained to Bustle that there would be times when people would randomly start throwing pillows or jumping on the couch, and in those chaotic situations, the cast would just follow along. 

Jake Johnson has been asked over and over what the rules are to this game, however, the simple answer is…there are none. However, while speaking with E! News in 2016 the Nick Miller actor did provide a way to go about playing Ture American, saying:

Well, there you have it. Ture American is truly just an amalgamation of chaos, drinking and some light American history. However, while the creatives didn’t come up with any definitive rules, viewers have, and this game has become a beloved joke and activity among New Girl fans. But, if following these complex and confusing rules is not your thing, you can turn the Fox comedy on through a Hulu subscription, and follow Jake Johnson’s rules of the game, which is to simply: “get drunk and yell presidents and throw beer in corners.” 

This week, Zooey Deschanel and Jonathan Scott announced that they are now fiancés after four years together. They got engaged at Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, and they seem to be continuing their European adventure while celebrating their engagement in the City of Love. Based on what we know, there was chemistry between the two pretty early on. The Buying and Selling star admitted that he was flirting hard with his eventual girlfriend when they first met in 2019. More recently, he’s been candid about the “pressure” he’s felt to marry his partner and was even asked about having a baby with her after his twin brother, Drew Scott, welcomed a child in 2022. Now, the contractor has gotten real about the “pressure” he feels to marry his famous girlfriend.

Even though, in reality, it’s incredibly unlikely that any fan would be “the first” to know about these two getting engaged, it probably wouldn’t take too long for those who love the couple (but don’t know personally) to find out about such a thing. Not only have they, as noted, been pretty good at sharing their lives with followers, but people who pay close attention to which of their favorite celebs are dating/engaged/having kids get that information as soon as it becomes available.

It’s pretty easy to see how he could feel “pressure” from not only fans, but interviewers, because society tends to place a lot of importance on romantic relationships hitting prescribed milestones. Dating seemed to be going swimmingly, so the twosome was only a little over two years in when questions about Deschanel and Scott becoming engaged soon really ramped up. Then, his brother, Drew, had a baby with his wife, and, of course, people took that as an opportunity to inquire about the potential of Jonathan and Zooey having a baby soon.

For a time, the couple was focused on the pitfall-filled renovation of their dream home together. That’s now complete, but it doesn’t mean that fans should get their hopes up about the famous mates becoming engaged or adding to their family. Not only should they be allowed to do things in their own time, but they’re also right to have the kind of relationship that they want, whether it involves marriage and babies or not. Plus, Scott confirmed that they’re currently focusing on co-parenting Deschanel’s young kids with her ex-husband, so it sounds like they’re doing everything they need right now to be happy, and that’s what’s really important.

What Did Zooey Deschanel Say About Renovating Her Dream Home With Jonathan Scott?

The Elf cast member and her HGTV star love have been getting along like gangbusters for nearly four years now, successfully co-parenting her kids with her ex-husband, sharing wonderful Valentine’s Day meals, and, yes, turning the Los Angeles house they bought into their dream home. As Deschanel noted to the Wall Street Journal, however, they did have to do all of their renovating in the midst of the pandemic, so it wasn’t easy. When asked what her favorite/funniest memory from the process was, she replied:

Anyone who’s checked out just one episode of a remodeling show like the ones that Scott and his brother head up will know that there are almost always unforeseen issues/costs when it comes to renovating homes. So I can only imagine that those problems increased by a great deal while attempting to do the same as the pandemic raged on. 

Their Brentwood home, which is a five-bedroom Georgian revival house, took two years to renovate. The couple revealed the finished project in January of this year on the twins’ website, Drew & Jonathan, which has been following along with their progress as they worked to get every detail right and include all of the features they wanted for their forever home. 

This includes lots of sustainable features, pretty patterns, a special craft space for Deschanel (be still my heart), a lavish outdoor kitchen, and the solarium the actress spoke of in her interview. That space features olive trees, a glass ceiling, and a balcony which connects to each bedroom, among other things. It’s wonderful that they were finally able to overcome all of the challenges involved in the renovation, because not only do they now have their perfect space, but we all also have plenty of inspiration from the photos, as well.

Among other fun facts to know about Property Brothers stars Drew and Jonathan Scott, there’s evidence the two twins have plenty in common, including their shared work lives. In other areas the two are dissimilar. For example, Jonathan’s a contractor while Drew’s into real estate. In addition, Drew Scott recently had a baby with wife Linda Phan while Jonathan isn’t married yet.  Given the fact the two are often lumped together, unsurprisingly when the two brothers were interviewed Jonathan Scott still got a baby-related question. In a recent interview, Drew was asked about his little one, Parker, after which ET followed up with a question for Jonathan. Scott was asked if he and his partner Zooey Deschanel might be following in Drew and Linda’s “footsteps” soon. The HGTV star dodged the question brilliantly, quipping,

Scott and Deschanel found their dream home in 2022, but the two aren’t engaged yet. While he and Zooey Deschanel have been together for a few years now, they haven’t spoken publicly about the potential for more kids.

Both stars are busy with their careers as well. The Elf star has roles like Harold and the Purple Crayon coming up. Meanwhile, Jonathan Scott is doing press for the new season of Celebrity IOU and still works on other HGTV projects like Property Brothers not to mention the myriad projects he produces. 

As for Drew Scott and his wife, the road to becoming parents wasn’t easy. The couple struggled to get pregnant for years and were open about the journey along the way. Linda Phan struggles with Graves Disease and deals with thyroid issues, so getting pregnant was a journey. Eventually, they settled on IVF to help bring baby Parker into the world. Drew Scott also spoke fondly about his son and how he’s been rapidly growing in recent months. 

Speaking of the aforementioned dream home, however, Jonathan Scott did divulge that he and Deschanel will be hosting the holidays for the first time, which should mark another big step for the couple. 

Just in case you wondered, the 500 Days of Summer star will be doing the cooking for this momentous event. Drew, Linda and Parker will also be attending. So, it sounds like it will be one big family affair. 

For seven years, TV viewers were smitten with the quirkadelic charms of Jess Day & Co. in Fox’s hit comedy New Girl, but ever since the show ended in 2018, star Zooey Deschanel has avoided jumping back into scripted TV. Instead, she’s popped up in other places, such as on Carpool Karaoke, where she met her presumed future hubby Jonathan Scott, as well as hosting the ABC game show The Celebrity Dating Game. Now, the actress is at last making her way back to fictional narratives for a role that sounds like it’s mirroring her actual life.

Zooey Deschanel has been tapped to join the third season of the acclaimed Apple TV+ dramedy Physical, where she’ll take on a series regular role opposite star Rose Byrne. In the streaming series, Deschanel will portray a character named Kelly, the star of a network sitcom who is inspired to lend her efforts to the world of exercise and fitness during its 1980s boom. Expectedly, that new motivation in life will lead her to cross paths with Byrne’s Sheila Rubin, whose life and career took a bit of a nosedive at the end of Season 2.

Interestingly enough, the description from Apple’s announcement doesn’t fully indicate whether Kelly will be joining the fun on Team Sheila, or if she’ll serve as something of an antagonist. It would be great for Rose Byrne’s housewife-turned-aerobics-celeb to enjoy a string of successes when Season 3 kicks off, what with the second season ending on her step aerobics plan getting popularized elsewhere, causing her to spiral back into self-doubt. 

In that respect, there’s certainly a chance that Kelly will use her network TV fame to bring more attention to Sheila’s efforts. But then there’s also the possibility that Deschanel’s actress will be another high-profile roadblock for the main character to conquer. 

So we’re definitely here for that drama, but I’m already even more into this casting choice just from thinking about what kind of hairstyle Zooey Deschanel is going to rock in Physical’s third season. As well as what kind of leggings. And the earrings! Basically, I’m already hoping Apple TV+ crafts a “special feature” out of Kelly’s wardrobe and makeup sessions.

Before fans see Deschanel presumably lip-syncing to Bon Jovi, she’ll be heading back to the 1970s with Walton Goggins and Casey Affleck for the music-geared drama Dreamin’ Wild. She’s also starring in the upcoming theatrical adaptation of the classic children’s book Harold and the Purple Crayon.

While the actress hasn’t yet shared anything on social media to celebrate her new gig, she did share this post on Instagram containing a video of duck’s rapid head movements, so there’s that.

While Zooey Deschanel has kept a bit of a low profile as an actress since New Girl ended in 2018, she’s definitely been in the public eye, as she’s very active on social media, with both her and Jonathan Scott sharing a number of adorable posts that feature the other on a regular basis. But, Deschanel’s new movie, Dreamin’ Wild, which is set to be released this year, recently had its premiere at the 2022 Venice International Film Festival, and Scott was there to support her. While Deschanel (who still finds herself defending a certain 500 Days of Summer character) admitted about a year ago that she knows it’s hard to date a celebrity, the duo is going so strong that they bought a house together, so it makes perfect sense that Scott would be down to make the trip to Venice, despite his many filming commitments, to provide a well-dressed, Prince Charming-like shoulder for Deschanel to lean on.

You are, of course, all wondering about Deschanel’s fairytale gown for this event, and I do have the details for you. According to USA Today, she’s sporting a satin Dolce & Gabbana gown that was tailored just for her (I mean…obviously), which features 3D floral details from shoulder to hip, that lead to a bustle which goes around the back and extends into a train. She’s also wearing four-inch heels with crystal bow accents in a color to match her dress.

All in all, I’d say Zooey Deschanel and Jonathan Scott have nailed both their red carpet looks, and their romance. Now if they could just finish renovating that house so that they could have time to get engaged and plan a wedding, I’m sure that would make fans even happier! 

500 Days of Summer gave audiences a different take on the rom-com genre. Instead of your usual meet-cute story that ends with eternal love, the movie actually ends with the two lead characters moving in different directions. Zooey Deschanel’s Summer Finn has received hate from fans because she rejected her romantic fling, Tom, and got married to someone else later on. With this, Deschanel continues to defend her 500 Days of Summer character over a decade later.

When you watch the full 500 Days of Summer trailer, you know right away that this is not a love story but a realistic depiction of two people’s relationship fading away. In an interview with The Guardian, Zooey Deschanel explained that she believes viewers have misinterpreted her character as a villain. On that note, she'd like people to take a deeper look at the film's doomed romance:

Zooey Deschanel makes a good point about her character. Summer told Tom from the get-go that she preferred their relationship to be casual, and Tom acted as if he agreed. However, that proved to be easier said than done the more Tom began to fall for Summer. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who played the man, has said before that everyone needs to stop blaming Deschanel's Summer for rejecting his character. After all, Gordon-Levitt’s hot take on his character is that Tom ignored his partner's suggestion about keeping the relationship fun instead of getting serious. In his estimation, he should've backed out as soon as he realized they wanted different things. But then there'd be no good story, would there?

The New Girl star has been adamant about her own viewpoint. When 500 Days hit Hulu, she sent a message to the fans, reiterating that Summer is not the villain. Yes, it does sting that the character didn't end up with Tom. But still there were commitment warning signs that he could've looked out for.

Of course, the 42-year-old actress/singer has done other things since starring in the beloved rom-come, like voicing Bridget in Trolls World Tour. She's also expected to appear in the musical biopic Dreamin’ Wild, in which she’ll play the wife of musician Donnie Emerson. A role like this is bound to steer her away from the “pixie manic dream girl” archetype that she’s played on more than a few occasions. You can also see her in the upcoming big-screen adaptation of Harold and the Purple Crayon. Zooey Deschanel does still get nostalgic for 500 Days, though, as she even recreated a Summer scene with her boyfriend, Property Brothers star Jonathan Scott.

It’s been three years since Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel first met doing an episode of Apple TV+’s Carpool Karaoke: The Series. The pair has managed to support their relationship despite living through a pandemic filled with Hollywood hookups and breakups and unbelievably busy schedules. Scott revealed that there was even more flirting on his part than viewers saw:

It was pretty obvious from the episode that Deschanel and the audience were getting what the HGTV star was putting down. Scott had to seize the opportunity. He appeared to be smitten with the Hollywood actress from the beginning. So, he wanted her to know he was interested beyond riding in an SUV singing popular hits.

Despite sparks flying during their first interaction, there was a minor hiccup in their road to coupledom. Right after filming, Scott took a trip to the Rocky Mountains, where there was no cell service. So, the New Girl star thought the Property Brothers star had ghosted after no calls or texts for four days. The TV home makeover guru must’ve soothed his lady love’s anxiety, as he revealed the smooth move he pulled off with his first text message.

Scott’s gesture shouldn’t be too surprising given he was into Deschanel’s love for Los Angeles and Zillow early on. Paying attention to conversational details proved the Celebrity IOU host wanted to impress the TV and film actress through any means possible, including singing an obscure Canadian country song.

Despite the relationship appearing to be easygoing, Deschanel was honest that dating a fellow celebrity was hard due to preconceived notions from viewers. That doesn’t mean she loves him any less, as the actress paid tribute to Scott and her ex-husband Jacob Penchenik on Father’s Day. While fans have been waiting on the pair to get engaged, they are currently occupied with building their dream house. So, without Carpool Karaoke, the duo wouldn’t be on engagement watch right now.

In the meantime, both stars are currently busy with their hectic schedules. Today is the day we honor all the dads and dad-like figures out there, and Zooey Deschanel is doing double duty in her Father’s Day tribute, where her own children are concerned. In Season 5 of Bones, star Emily Deschanel’s sister (Zooey of the Elf cast fame and later the lead of the New Girl cast) guest starred as Temperance Brennan’s second cousin, Margaret Whitesell.

Fred And Ben Savage (Little Monsters, The Wonder Years, Boy Meets World)

After playing siblings in the family-friendly horror film, Little Monsters, in 1989, Ben Savage made a guest appearance on his older brother, Fred’s, hit dramedy, The Wonder Years, in 1990 and later returned the favor by inviting him to the Boy Meets World cast for an episode in 1998.

Charlie Sheen And Emilio Estevez (Various)

After making several movies together - including Young Guns, Men At Work, and Rated X (the latter two of which Emilio Estevez directed), Charlie Sheen (née Carlos Estevez) reunited with his brother on an episode of his hit sitcom, Two and a Half Men, in 2008.

Vanessa and Laura Marano (Saving Zoë)

Both of these talented ladies had guest appearances on Dexter at different times in the series’ run, but Vanessa Marano and her younger sister, Laura, did appear together in the 2019 mystery, Saving Zoë, as siblings torn apart by one’s unsolved murder.

Hereditary’s Alex Wolff and his older brother, Peacock’s Joe vs. Carole cast member Nat Wolff, both debuted as fictionalized versions of themselves in Nickelodeon’s faux rockumentary, The Naked Brothers Band, its series continuation, and the 2009 TV movie Mr. Troop Mom before reuniting in 2018’s Stella’s Last Weekend, which was written and directed by their mother, Polly Draper.

Vera And Taissa Farmiga (Higher Ground, At Middleton, The Nun)

Scream Queens Vera and Taissa Farmiga, who are often mistaken for mother and daughter, played mother and daughter in 2013’s At Middleton after Taissa previously played her older sister’s younger self in Vera’s 2011 directorial debut, Higher Ground. However, interestingly, their characters in the 2018 Conjuring spin-off, The Nun, have no apparent familial ties.

Maude And Iris Apatow (Knocked Up, This Is 40, Funny People)

Euphoria’s Maude Apatow and her younger sister, Iris, have played siblings in 2007’s Knocked Up, its “sort-of sequel” This is 40 from 2012, and 2009’s Funny People - all three of which also starred their real mother, Leslie Mann, as their mother, and were written and directed by their father, Judd Apatow.

Dan And Sarah Levy (Schitt’s Creek)

While Annie Murphy plays co-creator Dan Levy’s on-screen sister in the Schitt’s Creek cast, Café Tropical owner, Twyla Sands, is played by his real-life sister, Sarah.

Mary-Kate, Ashley, And Elizabeth Olsen (How The West Was Fun)

After Full House made the Olsen Twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley, household names and  before the Marvel movies made their younger sister, Elizabeth, an A-lister, all three of them appeared together in the ABC original TV movie How the West Was Fun in 1994.

Despite plenty of years of experience between the them, it was not until 2017 when Star Wars star Domnhall Gleeson and his younger brother, Brian, shared the screen in Mother! before reuniting as co-creators and co-stars of the Amazon Prime original comedy Frank of Ireland - also starring their father, Brendan Gleeson.

Eddie And Charlie Murphy (Harlem Nights, Norbit)

Comedy icon Eddie Murphy worked behind the scenes a lot with his older brother, Charlie, who passed away in 2017, but the two would also share a few acting credits, - namely Eddie’s 1989 directorial debut Harlem Nights (also Charlie’s first movie), and in 2006’s Norbit, in which Charlie voiced a dog named Floyd.

Phylicia Rashad And Debbie Allen (The Cosby Show, Grey’s Anatomy, The Old Settler)

Phylicia Rashad and her younger sister, Emmy-winning dance legend Debbie Allen, have made guest appearances on each other’s shows - The Cosby Show, on which Rashad played Claire Huxtable, and Grey’s Anatomy, on which Allen plays Dr. Catherine Fox (née Avery) - and both starred in a 2001 TV movie called The Old Settler, which Allen also directed.

Ron And Clint Howard (Various) 

You can find Clint Howard in just about every movie directed by his brother, Ron Howard - including his feature-length directorial debut from 1977, Grand Theft Auto, which was also the brothers’ third time acting alongside each other after the 1963 film The Courtship of Eddie’s Father and a handful of episodes of The Andy Griffith Show.

Angelina Jolie And James Haven (Gia, Hell’s Kitchen, Original Sin)

Audiences probably remember Angelina Jolie’s brother, James Haven, better for other reasons than all the times he shared the screen with his younger sister - namely Gia and Hell’s Kitchen from 1998, and 2001’s Original Sin.

In addition to being bandmates with his young brother, Oscar winner Jared Leto, in 30 Seconds to Mars, Shannon Leto also shared the screen with him on a couple of episodes of My So-Called Life (on which Jared played the iconic Jordan Catalano) and through brief appearances in the movies Prefontaine from 1997, 1998’s Highway, and Sol Goode in 2003.

Chris And Scott Evans (Before We Go, Playing It Cool)

Former Captain America actor Chris Evans has a brother named Scott who has also appeared in two romantic-comedies from 2014 with his older sibling, called Before We Go (which Chris also directed) and Playing It Cool.

Sarah And Laura Silverman (The Sarah Silverman Program, Bob’s Burgers, Masters Of Sex)

Comedian and actress Sarah Silverman and her sister, Laura, played heavily fictionalized versions of themselves as series regulars on The Sarah Silverman Program, made guest appearances on Showtime’s Masters of Sex together, and have recurred on Bob’s Burgers as Jimmy Pesto’s twin sons, Andy and Ollie.

Kevin, Nick, And Joe Jonas (Camp Rock Movies, Jonas)

Back when they were the biggest thing to come out of Disney Channel, Kevin, Nick, and Joe Jonas played three brothers in a band not named the Jonas Brothers in the Camp Rock movies, and later played themselves to more comedic effect in their own sitcom, aptly titled Jonas.

Looks like talent really does run in the family.

Sadly, actor Ralph Ahn has passed away at the age of 95. Ahn appeared on many shows throughout the course of his career, though many audiences might remember him most for his fan-favorite role of Tran on New Girl. The actor’s passing elicited a reaction from Jake Johnson, as well as other former cast members of the Fox comedy series. 

Most of Ralph Ahn’s scenes on New Girl involved Jake Johnson’s Nick Miller, who randomly met Tran one day while sitting on a park bench. Tran then served as a father figure of sorts for Nick, and while he hardly ever said anything in the entirety of the series, he taught Nick many things. Johnson honored Ahn with a post on his Instagram page and had a few kind things to say about his former co-star.

Ralph Ahn appeared in seven episodes of New Girl but only had two lines in the entire show. Tran told Nick he was “a huge baby” while teaching him how to swim in his first appearance, and he said “drive” in his final episode appearance. Nick and Tran had some hilarious moments on New Girl, so it’s of little surprise that Jake Johnson respected Ahn and wanted to honor his passing. 

Jake Johnson’s post gained the attention of other New Girl actors, and of course, the lead actress who starred in the show, Zooey Deschanel. Deschanel (who landed the gig in a surprising way) popped up in the comments of Johnson’s post, and while she didn’t have a ton to add on top of what Johnson said, her comment indicated she was sad to hear about Ralph Ahn’s passing.

Lamorne Morris, who played Winston on New Girl, also took some time to honor and pay respects to Ralph Ahn. Morris shared a photo of Ahn on the show and said a few words about what Ahn’s Tran brought to the comedy series. 

To say that Ralph Ahn had the best scenes of the episodes he appeared in is high praise, especially from an actor like Lamorne Morris. Some of Morris’ scenes as Winston are among the best of New Girl (and Schmidt’s scenes are a close second), so to see him give those types of props to Ahn for his quiet but emotive performance as Tran is really cool. Hopefully, Ahn’s loved ones can take solace in the fact that his role on one show had such a positive impact on its cast, as well as its fans. If there’s ever a reunion for this show, hopefully, Tran gets a reference. 

Although Ahn's role as Tran might be the most memorable of the later years of his life, he had a long list of TV credits to his name, including Gilmore Girls, The Shield, ER, and Suddenly Susan, among others. CinemaBlend would like to send its condolences to the friends and family of Ralph Ahn and wish them well during this tough time. 

People can get very invested when their favorite celebrities begin seeing each other, which is why many fans were beyond delighted when Property Brothers star Jonathan Scott and former New Girl lead Zooey Deschanel started dating. They’ve continued to make fans happy with cute looks into their life together (like celebratory anniversary messages), and now Scott has opened up about what he learned about Deschanel “early on,” and how they found their dream home.

What Did Jonathan Scott Learn About Zooey Deschanel When They Started Dating?

As many of the couple’s fans will likely know, Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel met while filming a 2019 episode of Carpool Karaoke and made a near-instant connection. The duo began dating not long after, and have been demolishing homes together and sharing their Valentine’s Day plans ever since. And, with things continuing to go so well, Scott has revealed something he found out about his lady love pretty soon after getting to know each other, writing in a recent issue of Drew + Jonathan Reveal magazine:

Sometimes, this is exactly what it takes for a person to really feel like a new location is, or could be, home. If Scott hadn’t had Deschanel to show him Los Angeles as a native Angeleno, and introduce him to everything she loved about the city from when she was a kid and young adult there, the Canadian might not have been able to ever see himself living there on a permanent basis.

How Did Jonathan Scott And Zooey Deschanel Find Their Dream Home?

While Deschanel had to convince Scott of the many merits of L.A. as she saw them, they did have things they realized they both enjoyed. And, if you’re guessing that one of those things is houses and renovating them, you are correct. Scott added:

It’s understandable that this shared love would lead to them starting to look at houses not even a full year after starting to date (despite the admitted difficulties of dating a celebrity). Though Deschanel and Scott had some pretty specific requirements, they did eventually land on a property they both liked that wouldn’t require “the number of a good snake wrangler,” as the first home they toured did. Scott continued, noting exactly how good of a fit that other house turned out to be:

What’s meant to be, will be, right? If Deschanel and Scott hadn’t taken that leap and decided to just poke around a bit and see what L.A. real estate had to offer, they could have missed out on their dream home. It’s even been reported that the couple is so enthusiastically dedicated to renovating this house that it may be what’s delaying a proposal, though friends and family do think that’ll come along shortly. 

Good thing that Deschanel had no trouble telling the Scott brothers apart so she could easily chat up her future boyfriend. Now, if Zooey Deschanel and Jonathan Scott could only go ahead and film that proposed show idea that his brother, Drew, came up with, the fans would be set!

It’s often fun to play the “What if?” game when it comes down to casting, and Zooey Deschanel has let her fans on to a tantalizing alternate path her career might have gone down if she chose one project over another. The current host of the updated The Dating Game was apparently contemplating signing up for an arc on the extremely popular NBC sitcom The Office before she received the offer for her eventual hit show, New Girl. Would New Girl have even worked without Deschanel? Thankfully, we never had to find out. 

Zooey Deschanel was discussing this career left turn with New Girl co-stars Hannah Simone and Lamorne Morris on their new iHeart podcast, Welcome to Our Show. And on the first episode, which covers the pilot, Deschanel said:

It’s easy to forget this now, but before assuming the role of Jess on New Girl, Zooey Deschanel stayed consistently busy as a movie actress, starring opposite Jim Carrey (in the comedy Yes Man) and earning her indie movie cred for Marc Webb’s winning 500 Days (of Summer). That’s part of the reason why Deschanel wasn’t even considering television offers, and basically says she wouldn’t have picked up the New Girl script unless she thought she’d be too preoccupied to do it, because of The Office guest arc. 

As Zooey Deschanel goes on to say in the podcast episode:

She’s right. A good role is a good role, and television certainly has bitten into the bulk of the possibilities that used to only be available to movie stars. The line that once separated movie roles and TV parts is essentially gone, and actors should basically just chase the best possible characters available. Zooey Deschanel would be the latest one to tell you that, honestly.

It’s been over two years since an episode of Carpool Karaoke: The Series changed Zooey Deschanel and Jonathan Scott’s lives. The celebrities met while filming an episode of James Corden’s karaoke show in fall of 2019, and started dating soon after. Deschanel and Scott seem to be enjoying their time together, whether it’s recreating meet-cutes from the 500 Days of Summer actress’ movies or renovating houses, Property Brothers style. Can fans of the cute couple expect an engagement sometime soon?

While those close to Zooey Deschanel and Jonathan Scott wouldn’t be surprised if the contractor put a ring on it, an insider told US Weekly the fun couple is still too involved in a pretty big project that’s been keeping them busy, saying:

Well, that’s on-brand. Of course as Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel work toward the future together, they need to have the perfect house. For all of Scott’s background in renovation, we’ve seen Deschanel put in the manual labor herself, as she pitched in to help her boyfriend on an episode of Celebrity IOU.

Less than a year after they started dating, the singer/actress and the Property Brother bought a Georgian-style house that was originally built in 1938. The house is on a little over an acre of land, and the couple has been working on renovations ever since. 

I don’t know Zooey Deschanel and Jonathan Scott personally, but I’d say any couple that can withstand a renovation of this size has what it takes to go the distance. Hell, after all the work they’ve done on the house, planning a wedding might seem like small potatoes in comparison! 

Jonathan Scott has written in his magazine Drew + Jonathan Reveal, which he publishes with his twin brother Drew Scott, that they knew the house was the perfect place to spend the rest of their lives after Zooey Deschanel’s children named it the Park House. Deschanel shares two children, Elsie, 6, and Charlie, 4, with ex-husband Jacob Pechenik.

Zooey Deschanel opened up about dating the Property Brothers star, calling him the “best boyfriend,” though she seemed to have confused Jonathan Scott when she accepted the job to host The Celebrity Dating Game. The famous twin said he had to clarify whether she was going on the reality dating show as the host or a contestant. 

These two seem like a great match and so much fun to be around. Whenever they do make it official – because if their friends are right, it’s only a matter of time – hopefully they’ll be able to settle into a beautifully renovated house that’s perfect for their family. And hey, maybe we’ll see Zooey Deschanel and Jonathan Scott on their own renovation show and its various spinoffs someday. When it comes to the best Christmas movies, there are many directions a person could go in choosing their favorite. There are heart-warming classics like It’s a Wonderful Life, comedic mainstays like Home Alone or big holiday action films like Die Hard (wait, that is a Christmas movie, right?). But what about if you’re part of the Royal Family and have three little ones running around? Prince William just named his favorite Christmas movie, and it’s making me think it’s time to revisit this classic.

Prince William recently spoke to Radio Marsden Hospital’s radio station from Kensington Palace, revealing a certain Will Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel comedy to be his choice for favorite Christmas movie. His reasoning behind the choice (via Marie Claire) was pretty solid, as well.

Elf is a great choice for favorite Christmas movie, and I’d have to agree with the Duke of Cambridge about its humor standing up even after multiple viewings. It’s also the perfect choice for a father of three, and I’d give anything to see one of the Royal Family barging through the door, shouting, “I’m in love, I’m in love, and I don’t care who knows it!”

It's also interesting that Prince William chose a fun film like Elf, since Christmases at Buckingham Palace are pretty fancy affairs, filled with black-tie events. It’s nice that Prince William, with Kate Middleton and their children George, Charlotte and Louis, take the time during the holidays to wind down with tales of a human-sized elf passing through the seven levels of the Candy Cane forest, through the seas of swirly, twirly gum drops and right through the Lincoln Tunnel. It’s probably a needed escape from all of his royal demands.

If we’re talking about escaping, Prince William also didn’t choose any of the myriad royal-themed Christmas movies. Hallmark and Netflix, specifically, have an abundance of prince- and princess-themed holiday films, and while they are inexplicably addicting, perhaps some of those hit a little too close to home. Instead he went for New York City-based film a naive elf trying to bond with his father.

Elf is a feel-good classic with heartwarming messages of being yourself, singing loudly to spread Christmas cheer and eating your spaghetti with syrup on top. It’s no surprise that its humor holds up, with a cast that includes — on top of comedy legend Will Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel — Bob Newhart, Ed Asner, Kyle Gass, Andy Richter, Peter Dinklage and Amy Sedaris.

If you haven’t discovered the wonder of Elf, take Prince William’s suggestion and watch it now. I certainly think it’s about time for a repeat viewing. Once an unlikely hit for New Line Cinema, the Will Ferrell lark has become a seasonal classic, sparking no shortage of joy for audiences young and old during the most magical time of the year. Also starring Zooey Deschanel, James Caan, Bob Newhart, Peter Dinklage, and the late Ed Asner, the Elf cast is filled with seasoned veterans and former newcomers alike. Now that the season is upon us, it's time to look back on the 18-year-old (!) movie and see what Jon Favreau's all-star ensemble is doing now. 

Will Ferrell (Buddy The Elf)

As Buddy the Elf, an orphan child who spent his formative years in the North Pole and reconnects with his father as an emotionally-stunted adult, Will Ferrell became a movie star thanks to his gleeful lead performance in Jon Favreau’s Elf. Establishing his comedic chops through his uproarious work on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, the actor continued to find fame thanks to his performances in the Anchorman movies, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, The Other Guys, Old School, and Step Brothers — many of which he also co-wrote and produced. Ferrell's other film credits include Stranger Than Fiction, The Producers, Blades of Glory, the Zoolander films, the Daddy’s Home movies, The LEGO Movies, and, most recently, Netflix's Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. 

Most recently, Will Ferrell produced and starred in Apple TV+’s The Shrink Next Door. He also appeared in the short film, David. Next, Will Ferrell is the star and producer of Apple TV+’s Spirited. He’s also attached to a number of other projects, including The Prince of Fashion, Fruitcake, an untitled eSports project, and plenty more. Furthermore, Ferrell is a producer or executive producer behind many notable movies and shows, including the Emmy-winning HBO series, Succession.

James Caan (Walter Hobbs)

In the role of Walter Hobbs, Buddy the Elf’s distant father (both physically and emotionally), James Caan plays a deeply disapproving dad in Elf. Most notably, the actor was Oscar-nominated for his hot-tempered performance as Sonny Corleone in The Godfather. Additionally, Caan was acclaimed for his work in Thief, Misery, Bottle Rocket, For the Boys, Brian’s Song, The Gambler, Funny Lady, A Bridge Too Far, The Glory Guys, El Dorado, Dick Tracy, Alien Nation, and other films. Also, the same year that Elf arrived, Caan was celebrated for his performance in Dogville. 

Following Elf, James Caan has been seen a number of movies, including Get Smart, Blood Ties, The Good Neighbor, Undercover Grandpa, Holy Lands, and Small Apartments. He was also heard in the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs movies. On TV, Caan starred in ABC’s short-lived Back in the Game. He was also seen in Starz’s Magic City. Recently, Caan appeared in Queen Bees and JL Family Ranch 2. He’s also attached to Ace Beyond the Rye, Redemption, and Megalopolis, which reunites him with Francis Ford Coppola. 

Zooey Deschanel (Jovie)

Playing the part of Jovie, Buddy the Elf’s sardonic co-worker who's unexpectedly charmed by this man’s relentless good cheer, Zooey Deschanel found her first brushes of fame as the love interest in 2003’s Elf. Following this breakout role, the actress continued to make a good impression and/or stole the show in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Failure to Launch, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and Bridge to Terebithia before she landed lead parts in (500) Days of Summer, The Happening, Yes Man, Our Idiot Brother, and Gigantic. Deschanel also reunited with Will Ferrell in Winter Passing. But she was most acclaimed for her lead performance as Jessica Day in Fox’s New Girl. 

Following her time on that hit series, for which she was Emmy-nominated, Zooey Deschanel was heard in last year’s Trolls World Tour, reprising her voice-only role from the previous movie. She can also be seen in Katy Perry’s “Not the End of the World” music video. Currently, Deschanel is filming the music drama, Dreamin’ Wild. She also co-hosts ABC’s The Celebrity Dating Game. Away from acting, Deschanel is known for her music career, particularly her work in She & Him. 

Mary Steenburgen (Emily Hobbs)

As Emily Hobbs, Buddy the Elf’s ever-confounded step-mom, Mary Steenburgen played a concerned matriarch in Elf. Most notably, the actress won an Oscar for her outstanding supporting role in Melvin and Howard. Steenburgen can also be seen in Parenthood, Back to the Future Part III, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Time After Time, Philadelphia, Clifford, and Nixon. Later, she reunited with Will Ferrell in Step Brothers. Steenburgen was also seen in The Help, Four Christmases, Inland Empire, The Brave One, and Book Club. Recently, she appeared in Happiest Season. Next, Steenburgen stars in Nightmare Alley. 

Away from film, Mary Steenburgen starred in Fox’s The Last Man on Earth. She can also be seen in Orange Is the New Black, Justified, Joan of Arcadia, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Recently, the actress appeared in NBC’s Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. Steenburgen reprises this role in Roku’s Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas. 

Daniel Tay (Michael Hobbs)

In the role of Michael Hobbs, Buddy’s moody younger half-brother, Daniel Tay plays a smart-aleck kid in Jon Favreau’s Elf. This Christmas favorite is easily his most famous acting credit, though he also played Young Harvey in the wonderful American Splendor that same year. Tay's other credits include Beer League and Brooklyn Rules. Additionally, the actor voiced the title character in Doogal and he can be heard in video games like Grand Theft Auto IV and Bully. Away from film, moreover, Tay was seen in various episodes of The Jamie Kennedy Experiment. 

In 2009, Daniel Tay stepped away from acting. As Bustle wrote, the former actor graduated from Yale University and he became a bilingual editor and an SAT tutor. 

Bob Newhart (Papa Elf)

Playing the part of Papa Elf, Buddy’s loving adoptive father, Bob Newhart is a benevolent dad in Elf. Most famously, the actor-comedian was the star of The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart, both for which he was Emmy-nominated. Newhart was also Emmy-nominated for his work in ER and The Librarian: The Curse of the Judas Chalice. Later, he won an Emmy for playing Arthur in CBS’s The Big Bang Theory. Additionally, Newhart is known for his voice work in The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under. His most notable film credits include Catch-22, In & Out, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, and Horrible Bosses. 

Peter Dinklage (Miles Finch)

As Miles Finch, a best-selling children’s book author who doesn’t take kindly to Buddy the Elf’s observations, Peter Dinklage played a short-tempered character in 2003’s Elf. Most notably, the actor is a four-time Emmy winner for playing Tyrion Lannister in HBO’s Game of Thrones. Also, the same year that Elf came into theaters, Dinklage was acclaimed for his terrific lead performance in Tom McCarthy’s The Station Agent. He was also seen in Living in Oblivion, Human Nature, and Tiptoes. Faizon Love (Gimbel's Manager/Wanda)

In the role of Wanda, Gimbel’s overworked manager, Faizon Love was a last-minute replacement for Wanda Sykes in Elf. Prior to his performance in this film, the actor was known for playing Wendell Wilcox in The WB’s The Parent ‘Hood. Love is also known for his film debut, lending his voice to the role of Robin Harris in Babe’s Kids. His other film credits include Friday, The Meteor Man, Don’t Be a Menace …, 3 Strikes, The Players Club, Blue Crush, and The Replacements. 

Following his time in Elf, Faizon Love starred in ABC’s short-lived series, The Big House, and last year’s Bulletproof 2. He also notably appeared in Torque, Who’s Your Caddy?, Couples Retreat, Idlewild, Just My Luck, The Fighting Temptations, The Paperboy, and Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son. Additionally, Love starred in YouTube Red’s Step Up: High Water. Most recently, the actor was seen in She Ball and The War with Grandpa. Next, Love will appear in Off the Grid Comedy: Belize, Trading Soles, Back on the Strip, and Block Party. The comic's other upcoming projects include Friendship Day, Social Redemption, and The Fastest Man Alive. 

Amy Sedaris (Deb)

Playing the part of Deb, Walter’s belabored secretary, Amy Sedaris has a cheery supporting role in 2003’s Elf. Most notably, the actress co-created and starred in Comedy Central’s Strangers with Candy, along with its prequel film of the same name. Sedaris also created and starred in Comedy Central’s Exit 57. Additionally, the actress was seen in Maid in Manhattan, School of Rock, and Six Days, Seven Nights. Following Elf, Sedaris lent her voice to the role of Princess Carolyn in Netflix’s acclaimed animated series, BoJack Horseman. She can also be seen in Alpha House, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The Mandalorian, and The Heart, She Holler. Moreover, Sedaris created and starred in truTV’s Emmy-nominated surrealist series, At Home with Amy Sedaris, which ended earlier this year.

Furthermore, away from television, Amy Sedaris can be seen in Snow Angels, Romance & Cigarettes, Stay, Jennifer’s Body, Old Dogs, and I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With. She also reunited with Will Ferrell in Bewitched. Additionally, Sedaris can be heard in Shrek the Third, Puss in Boots, My Life as a Courgette, and 2019’s The Lion King. Most recently, Sedaris was seen in Save Yourselves! and heard in The Boss Baby: Family Business. She can also be heard in No Activity, Robot Chicken, and DuckTales. Sedaris also guest-starred in HBO’s Betty. Next, the film-TV actress will appear in Dave Franco’s Somebody I Used to Know. 

Ed Asner (Santa Claus)

As the immortal Santa Claus, the late Ed Asner will live on as Father Christmas in the modern holiday classic, Elf. Fondly remembered for his performance as Lou Grant in CBS’s The Mary Tyler Moore Show and its spin-off, Lou Grant, for which he won seven Emmys, the actor was also acclaimed for his Emmy-winning turns in Rich Man, Poor Man and Roots. He’s also warmly remembered for his lead voice role in Pixar’s Up. His other notable film and TV credits include El Dorado, JFK, The Closer, Dead to Me, Gus, and Cobra Kai, to name only a very select few. 

Even during his final years, Ed Asner remained very active as an actor and voice performer. Earlier this year, for instance, the belated movie star was seen in Senior Entourage, Barking Mad, and Disney+’s Muppets Haunted Mansion. Asner could also be seen in The Premise and Grace and Frankie and heard in Dug Days. His final credits include Awaken, Deadly Draw, Back Home Again, A Fargo Christmas Story, The Gettysburg Address, and The Last Saturday Night.

Zooey Deschanel recently popped by The Kelly Clarkson Show to chat with the longtime The Voice coach about parenthood and her burgeoning relationship with Property Brother Jonathan Scott. Knowing that the Scott siblings can be difficult to tell apart at times, Kelly Clarkson asked Zooey Deschanel if she had any tips or tricks for discerning the twins’ identities. Plot twist: Zooey doesn’t see the resemblance. She said: 

So, the secret to telling the Property Brothers apart? Thinking they don’t look alike in the first place, which admittedly requires pretty specific parameters. Beyond that, if fans are still stuck, they can always hope for one of them to have a beard. Not that Deschanel needs it.

Sparks flew almost immediately, and not from any dangling car mufflers, so it’s no surprise that they started dating shortly after the segment aired. 

Zooey Deschanel also appeared on Celebrity IOU, a Property Brothers-centric miniseries that features celebrities building dream homes for deserving pals. While she may not have been a demolition expert, Zooey Deschanel definitely made an impact: her love of interior design inspired Jonathan and Drew to pitch a show concept that features the 500 Days of Summer star fixing up old houses. It may just be a pipe dream for now, but it would certainly make for a fun addition to the HGTV canon. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a well-oiled machine over the last decade of filmmaking, but it started off as a major gamble. A crossover event like Joss Whedon’s The Avengers had never been done, and the project changed throughout the course of its development. And it turns out that Zooey Deschanel almost played a major Marvel hero in that iconic blockbuster.

The Avengers arrived in theaters back in 2012, and featured the first major MCU crossover as the heroes assembled to protect New York City. Joss Whedon wanted to bring in Zooey Deschanel as The Wasp after it seemed like Black Widow wouldn’t factor into the story. Senior Vice President of Marvel Studios Jeremy Latcham confirmed this recently, saying:

Well, my mind is blown. It’s hard to imagine The Avengers without Black Widow, but it looks like another badass female hero nearly joined the team: The Wasp. While that’s a character that would ultimately be played by Evangeline Lilly in the Ant-Man movies, it’s fascinating to imagine how the shared universe would have been altered by this choice.

Jeremy Latcham’s revelation about The Avengers comes to us from the newly released book The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Via The Direct).  In it there are a number of tidbits that are sure to blow the minds of Marvel fans out there. Chief among them is that Zooey Deschanel nearly had the chance to be the first female Avenger instead of Scarlett Johnasson’s Black Widow.

The generations of MCU fans might be wondering exactly why Black Widow was nearly not included in the lineup of The Avengers. That’s addressed in the book, as it wasn’t always clear if Scarlett Johansson would be able to film and reprise her Iron Man 2 role due to a scheduling conflict. Joss Whedon himself is quoted, where he addressed the way Wasp nearly factored into the blockbuster. As he put it,

Suddenly it all makes sense. It looks like Joss Whedon wrote an alternate version of The Avengers script just in case Scarlett Johansson wasn’t available to appear as Black Widow. But the Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator might have gone overboard, and made The Wasp the star of the show. But moviegoers know how that ultimately worked out.

In the end Scarlett Johnasson starred as Black Widow in all four of the Avengers movies, and only recently wrapped her tenure as the character. Evangeline Lilly’s Wasp will be back in Ant-Man’s upcoming threequel, while it remains to be seen if Zooey Deschanel ever gets to play a Marvel character. Although there are some killer choices for the 500 Days of Summer actress.

Everyone's mileage varies when it comes to the annual Primetime Emmy Awards, which have been more extra than usual in recent years thanks to hosting choices (or a lack thereof) and the pandemic. This year's televised ceremony on CBS was no different, as Cedric the Entertainer gave viewers some enjoyable moments (like that opening tribute) mixed with some truly baffling attempts at comedy (the non-timely fly callback). Even though the telecast is still happening at the time of this writing, I can already say with confidence that the funniest few minutes of the night went to the "No Emmy Support Group," featuring Jason Alexander, Scott Bakula, Zooey Deschanel, and Alyson Hannigan, along with a couple of special guests.

I love that this wasn't a room full of celebs being faux-candid about not having been recognized for their efforts across the past few decades of television, and that it almost immediately went from "Woo, Scott Bakula!" to a metaphorical measuring contest between Bakula and Jason Alexander. ("The Contest" reference intended.) Considering Alexander has shown off his acting chops in dramas here and there, I kinda hope Bakula follows up on his years at NCIS: New Orleans with an offbeat comedy where he can lean into those instincts. He could get a sixth mansion going that route.

In the years since Seinfeld ended, it seems wild to think that Jason Alexander lost out on Emmys to his co-star Michael Richards, but that's how it goes, I guess. He obviously lost to other actors as well, so we can't hold too many grudges. But hey, since HBO Max is doing a dramatized version of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, what if somebody created a dramatized version of George Costanza's life? I feel like either Paul Dano would kill it in that role, with Michael Shannon as Kramer. But seriously, that shouldn't happen.

And with ABC's upcoming The Wonder Years reboot premiering soon, it was quite the timely appearance from O.G. star Fred Savage, who has somehow never won an Emmy either for his work as Kevin Arnold — he was nominated twice, in 1989 and 1990 — or for his directing work. Now, while Dr. Phil McGraw doesn't have any Primetime Emmys on his shelves, he has technically won Daytime Emmys, so he was the reigning champ in the room in that respect.

While there are obvious optics issues with having a Black host talk to a room full of white actors about their Emmy woes, we'll just recognize that and move on, since the segment itself didn't dig into those topics. And Cedric the Entertainer did get confirmation in another silly moment that it isn't impossible for him to win an Emmy next year. Speaking of...

Maybe Jason Alexander will win a Guest Star Emmy for his upcoming work on ABC's The Conners. Maybe Zooey Deschanel will win for her hosting work on The Celebrity Dating Game. Fred Savage could win for directing The Wonder Years' reboot pilot. Maybe Alyson Hannigan and Scott Bakula will win for something that hasn't come out yet. Anything can happen!

The HGTV star has revealed he may have a great idea for a show that could bring him together with Deschanel on the small screen.

Ever since fans first learned about the relationship, many have been begging for Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel to do something together in a professional capacity, and followers may get their wish if Scott has his way. The Property Brothers co-star gave Entertainment Tonight a peek into a proposed concept from his twin brother Drew, saying:

Drew Scott’s idea sounds like a brilliant one. Viewers would get to see Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel not only being cutesy in front of a laptop, but also being cutesy while renovating fixer-uppers. Like Scott implied, who wouldn’t be interested in Deschanel coming into their home with offers of fixing it up? Fans of the couple got a preview of what that show might look like courtesy of Deschanel’s appearance on her boyfriend’s other renovation series Celebrity IOU. So, doing a renovation show together might take their relationship to the next (split) level.

But it’s not like Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel have been shy about their relationship outside of their TV responsibilities, though. Deschanel and Scott have gushed over each other in interviews as well as on social media, especially on Deschanel’s favorite holiday – Valentine’s Day. As much as followers love their relationship, the couple has maintained some privacy while speaking on the reality of dating another celebrity. The beloved couple recently celebrated their second anniversary on Instagram after meeting on Carpool Karaoke.

Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel’s relationship is proof the HGTV love is strong, and it's extended to other Property Brothers-adjacent shows as well. Ant Anstead met his current girlfriend Renee Zellweger while shooting the first episode of the spinoff Celebrity IOU: Joyride. On Sunday, August 29, actor Ed Asner passed away at the age of 91. Along with his numerous TV credits, such as playing Lou Grant in The Mary Tyler Moore Show and the character’s same-named spinoff series, Asner also starred in many movies over his long career, which includes playing Santa Claus in 2003’s Elf. Now Zooey Deschanel, who also appeared in the Christmas movie, has paid tribute to her late co-star.

While Zooey Deschanel and Ed Asner didn’t really share any screen time on Elf, the New Girl actress clearly thought highly of the man, as evidenced by her sweet post. Take a look:

In 2013, director Jon Favreau had expressed interest in making a sequel called Elf 2: Buddy Saves Christmas, but later that sam year, Will Ferrell said he wasn’t interested in another round as Buddy. Then last year, James Caan, who played Buddy’s biological father Walter Hobbs, said that the reason we never got an Elf sequel was supposedly because Ferrell and Favreau didn’t get along while making the first movie.

Elf would later be adapted into a stage musical and an animated TV special, with Ed Asner being the only actor from the original movie to reprise his role in the latter. As for Zooey Deschanel, she’s most recently been co-hosting ABC’s The Celebrity Dating Game with Michael Strahan, as well as reprised Bridget for Trolls: World Tour and the Trolls Holiday TV special.

More and more celebrities are joining and creating a presence on TikTok, which can give fans a closer look into the private lives of their favorite stars. And of course, there's even the occasional cool throwback. Zooey Deschanel recently climbed on the TikTok train as well and made a pretty cool video to kick things off. For her debut on the video social media platform, Deschanel recreated the iconic intro to her fan-favorite show, New Girl.

New Girl wrapped up its seven-season run three years ago, but it’s still pretty fresh in fans' minds. Leading lady Zooey Deschanel’s recent TikTok is unmistakable as an ode to the show, though it also includes a small little twist at the end that allows her to introduce herself on the platform. You can check the video out down below, but be warned because the nostalgia of the post will have you wanting to binge the series for sure:

Okay, so there are a number of differences between Zooey Deschanel’s TikTok and the real intro to New Girl, and the most glaring has got to be the absence of her three roomies. It would have been epic if Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, and Lamorne Morris had made appearances in the video for a little New Girl reunion. It’s honestly just not the same without them.

In the original opening for New Girl, Jess’ (Zooey Deschanel’s character) roommates are going through the motions of the choreography apathetically, with Jess as the central focus. Despite this, you just can't help but feel there’s just something (rather, three people) missing from Deschanel’s recreation. Sure, Jess’ roommates may not be acting super into the intro, or really any of Jess’ quirky shenanigans, but fans know that deep down, they really do care for their roommate and have fun with her.

It’s awesome to see Zooey Deschanel throwing it back to her New Girl days and, honestly, it’s a pretty perfect intro to TikTok as well, but I do miss the boys! I miss their epic Los Angeles art district apartment, too. In the TikTok, their brick laden, Nick-fixed apartment is replaced by a beautifully designed and decorated home, probably one that belongs to Deschanel herself.

While the apartment was cool, it’s also interesting to see the blatant differences between Zooey Deschanel and her character. Worth noting, it totally makes sense that she’s got a beautiful home, considering thatt she’s now dating one of the Property Brothers and has probably gained some major reno skills herself since the relationship has bloomed.

Other than getting some remodeling work in with her handy boyfriend and doing a little voice acting, Zooey Deschanel hasn’t been super active in Hollywood since her time on New Girl ended other a few appearances as herself on segments like Carpool Karaoke. But while it looks like she’s just been mostly chilling, she is heading a new TV matchmaker project that would make Jessica Day proud. And we may get some more sneak peeks into what she’s up to now that she’s made her TikTok debut. We’ll just have to wait and see!

I'm sure that there are a lot of people who would jump at the chance to date someone famous, only to realize that they're actually not interested in several aspects of celebrity lifestyle. If you begin dating someone who's very famous, you could suddenly find yourself being gossiped about / discussed online or even in national or international publications. And, if you and your celebrated boo live in a location where paparazzi abound, any simple date night or attempt to get groceries could turn into an unwanted event.

This is not to mention that people who act, sing, direct, dance, etc. for a living are frequently away from home for many more hours a day than those of us with non-entertainment industry jobs, and that's if they're even near their home at all, seeing as how they often find themselves in other states or countries for extended periods of time to work. Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra might only manage to see each other once a month, but at least they were fully prepared for that potential caveat of celebrity romance going in.

During her interview, Zooey Deschanel also noted that she thinks The Celebrity Dating game is a good way to hook the famous up with us regular people, and when asked if she'd be interested in appearing on such a show if she were single, Deschanel replied:

Ahhh. Well, I suppose it's a good thing that Zooey Deschanel doesn't have to worry about that at the moment, or, hopefully, for a long time to come.

Who’s that girl? Who’s that giiiiirl? It’s Jess! It’s kind of crazy to believe that New Girl ended back in 2018 since it’s been in constant rotation on my wife’s Netflix account ever since. The show, which would early on advertise its lead, Zooey Deschanel as “adorkable”, would later drop the whole idea and instead focus on the rest of the New Girl cast since it was always more of an ensemble piece anyway. To wit, it was actually the other New Girl characters, like Schmidt, Coach, and Cece who played off of Jess’s character, making her so much funnier in the long run.

But, with such a great cast of characters, who was the funniest on the show? That’s actually really tough, and I asked some of my friends online who they thought was the funniest, but I got completely different answers across the board. I’m crossing my fingers that New Girl will have a reunion of sorts, a la Friends, but until that day, here are the funniest characters on New Girl, ranked by hilarity.

6. Jess (Zooey Deschanel)

The “New Girl” the show is actually based around, Jess really is “adorkable.” From her job as a teacher—of both children and adults—to her many weird boyfriends, Jess is an interesting character with many quirks, some good, and some bad. In that way, I like Jess. I don’t know if I would want her to be my roommate, but she’s fun to watch. Especially when she’s playing “True American” with the gang.

So, why is she at the bottom of this list? Well, because her character is only really funny around other characters. What I mean is, she’s a great springboard for jokes, and everybody else is funnier because she’s there, but I don’t really think that she’s funny on her own. She’s awkward, which is the point, but it’s only funny because it bleeds into all the other characters around her. Case in point, “The Hike” episode. When Cece’s former boyfriend, Robby (played by Nelson Franklin) tries to date Jess, everything goes downhill fast when they learn that they’re actually third cousins. Her shocked reaction to it is great, but it only really works since Robby doesn’t seem to really care all that much. That contrast is great, but it doesn’t always work in Jess’s favor.

5. Cece (Hannah Simone)

Jess’s best friend and former model, Cece is fiercely loyal to anybody she cares about. At first, she goes from boyfriend to boyfriend, but then eventually falls in love with Schmidt, which changed the whole dynamic of her character as a lot of her humor was exchanged for the cuteness of their relationship.

Now, I know how I just said that Jess is at her best around others, and the same can be said about Cece. But I just prefer Cece’s, You-guys-are-all-losers-but-I-love-you-anyway, attitude. She’s especially great with Winston (played by Lamorne Morris) as his often silly, prankish comedy bounces off of her more laid back approach. So, when she actually is excited, like when she was trying on wedding dresses, her humor and happiness is infectious, making her that much funnier. Who doesn’t love Cece?

4. Coach (Damon Wayans Jr.)

Coach was one of the original roommates who moved out when he got into a serious relationship (and by serious relationship, I mean the actor, Damon Wayans Jr. was still contractually on the show, Happy Endings). He’s a former athlete and a physical trainer who pretends to be tough, but he’s not fooling anybody. He’s a complete softy on the inside.

Now, here’s where I met some contention. My wife said Coach is the funniest character on the show, but most others put him closer to the bottom. I think it’s because he left for a while, and when he came back, his replacement, Winston, just completely took over in his absence. But when he came back, he had some great moments, like when he was searching for a boy named “Duquan Feldman” that he made up to help Winston out, and ended up coming home with a grown man instead. Coach is a great character, but I wouldn’t put him in the top three. He wasn’t on the show enough to earn it. He’s like Brock Lesner only showing up to PPV events. And if you get that wrestling reference, you’re awesome.

3. Schmidt (Max Greenfield)

Schmidt, who works at a very successful marketing firm (run almost entirely by women) considers himself the alpha male in pretty much any situation, even though everybody around him can tell that he’s trying way too hard to pull it off. He’s a bit of a douchebag (which is why he constantly needs to fill the douchebag jar), but he’s also a really good friend and boyfriend who has a genuinely good heart. He’s not the guy you love to hate. He’s actually quite the opposite, the guy you hate to love!

If Schmidt’s character was on any other show, he’d be the funniest character by far. He’s kind of like the Kramer of New Girl, as his wild, somewhat manic personality definitely makes him stand out from the rest of the cast. But like that Seinfeld reference, Schmidt is not on another show. He’s on New Girl, which means that pretty much every character is funny. Even the guests. In that way, his controlling personality is definitely funny, like when he specifies to Cece that he “designs” rather than “decorates” the apartment. But it’s the kind of humor that I can only take in small dosages, which is also kind of like Cosmo Kramer.

2. Winston (Lamorne Morris)

Winston, who just came back from playing basketball in Latvia, is a weird guy who loves cats and playing pranks on people. What more could you possibly want in a roommate? He’s the kind of guy who will go to a wedding and order the fruitiest drink on the menu, and also the kind of guy you would never think would become a cop, but becomes one anyway. If you don’t love Winston, I’m pretty sure you’re dead inside.

Winston is a grown ass man who’s afraid of the dark. He calls himself “Pranks Sinatra” and earns that title, like when he said he pulled off “my greatest prank” (Or, “Engram Pattersky”) and made everybody in the loft think they were getting kicked out. If I were to rewatch New Girl in its entirety, I’m pretty sure Winston would get the most laughs since he definitely has the best lines. Or maybe it’s just that he delivers his lines the best. I really wanted to put Winston at number 1, but…

1. Nick (Jake Johnson)

Bartender turned author of The Pepperwood Chronicles, Nick, played by Spider-Man himself, Jake Johnson, looks tired all the time, both physically, and emotionally. He’s a cheap ass who doesn’t apply himself—until he does—and when he does try, it almost always goes wrong. I genuinely feel like I knew people just like Nick in college, which makes him feel like the most authentic character on the show. And also the funniest.

Winston may have the best lines, and Schmidt the best outbursts, but I can just look at Nick and I'll start laughing. He can just be standing off in the corner with his eyes glazed over, and his mouth slightly ajar and I’ll just start cracking up. I can’t really think of one specific moment from the show that Nick stole, but that’s because he stole all of them. He’s sarcastic to a fault and believes that you can use somebody else’s bath towel after you take a shower since you’re already clean. Nick is the only character who I think could have his own show, and it would still be really funny even without the other characters. And for that reason, Nick is the funniest character on the show.

It’s probably difficult to date when you’re a celebrity. Dating is hard, period. Put that relationship under the microscope of the public eye, and even the smallest of issues could turn into a headline. That said, it’s no wonder most celebrities tend to be very private when it comes to their personal lives. Zooey Deschanel -- who you might remember from a little show called New Girl--is no exception, which is why it was so fun to see her recently open up about her boyfriend, Jonathan Scott of HGTV’s Property Brothers.

Zooey Deschanel sat down with USA Today to discuss her new gig hosting ABC’s The Celebrity Dating Game. When asked whether or not she would consider looking for love on the dating show, she took the opportunity to touch on her boyfriend:

The ‘best boyfriend’ in question is Property Brothers’ Jonathan Scott, who was actually nervous about Emily Deschanel’s latest project. He explained:

It sounds like Property Brothers’ Jonathan Scott is otherwise totally supportive, which is probably one of the reasons Zooey Deschanel was singing his praises. She’s posted about him on her Instagram multiple times, including a 2021 New Year’s post that referred to him as her ‘2020 MVP.’ Last April, her birthday post for Jonathan Scott called him ‘kind, sweet, wonderful, hilarious, clever, generous, caring’ and ‘handsome,’ all in the same sentence.

Fortunately, Property Brothers’ Jonathan Scott seems to be on the same page. Zooey Deschanel is occasionally fawned over on his Instagram as well. One post described her as Jonathan Scotts’ ‘perfect person.’ Sounds like boyfriends everywhere should be taking notes.

Zooey Deschanel may be pretty private, but we did get to see her goof around with Property Brothers’ Jonathan Scott in a December 2020 episode of HGTV’s Celebrity IOU. The show features the Property Brothers renovating houses alongside various celebrities who wanted to give back to their communities. Zooey Deschanel admitted that demolition was not her strong suit, but she did her best. And let’s be honest, we were watching that episode to see the couple be cute together, not destroy some cabinets.

The first episode of The Celebrity Dating Game will premiere June 14, 2021 at 10 pm on ABC. In addition to Zooey Deschanel, the show will also feature Michael Bolton. The Grammy Award winner’s previous television appearances include SNL and Lip Sync Battle. We'll have to wait to see how it plays out on air, but it's nice to see Deschanel heading back to TV again.

In the age of reboots, revivals, and reunions, fans can’t help but hope that their favorite characters will reunite once again. And it’s never too early to start planning for a reunion show. Despite Fox sitcom New Girl coming to an end just three years ago, creator and showrunner Elizabeth Meriwether has some thoughts on whether or not Zooey Deschanel and cast will get together for a special episode.

Following Friends: The Reunion’s recent HBO Max release and iCarly’s impending Paramount+ premiere, other shows doing reunions or revivals is on lots of minds. One show that many fans still can’t get enough of is Zooey Deschanel’s New Girl, which came to an end in 2018 after seven seasons. Elizabeth Meriwether came together with the cast at Variety’s TVFest and mentioned when she thinks there could be a New Girl reunion show in the future:

When New Girl came to an end in 2018, it didn’t feel like an ending to the whole story of Jess and her friends, as so much more could have happened when we left the characters the way we did. It did feel like an ending to one chapter in their story, however, and they were all going their separate ways, leaving the apartment, until they weren’t. Elizabeth Meriwether explains how hard it was to let go of the characters that have been part of her life and why the Fox sitcom ended the way it did:

Even though much of the New Girl cast have taken on new roles after the series ended, it seems like the characters and show will always be with them. With the show on Netflix, new fans are discovering just how hilarious Jess, Nick and everyone else are. The series ran on Fox from 2011-2018 and remained a critically acclaimed show, and also remains popular with viewers.

While it may be a little early to expect a New Girl reunion, it’s never too early to hope for one. The cast may all be doing something different but the show will always be with them. Maybe it’ll be like a Friends: The Reunion deal and we’ll see them together many years down the road? You never know what the future has in store. In the meantime, all seven seasons of New Girl are streaming on Netflix.
