Child Of Light Brings Storybook Role-Playing To PS4, Xbox One

Ubisoft has finally gone over and beyond to deliver something truly mesmerizing. Their newest game, Child of Light, was recently announced with a debut trailer and it looks every bit the kind of game that you would add to your shelf and feel proud that it sits there amongst the legends of gaming history.

The debut video plays out like a visual poem, giving gamers a small taste of what the adventure will have in store for players while also rolling out a cascade whimsical colors and backdrops that will soften even the most hardened of artistic hearts.

Combining the 3D hand painted aesthetic with classic turn-based RPG mechanics was a brilliant move, and it melds so well with the presentation that, as mentioned, it's deeply mesmerizing. One user was even compelled enough by the onslaught of audio and video beauty to comment and say “One of those history making games.?" Indeed it is.

Players will assume the role of Aurora, a child stolen from her home who must also reclaim the land from an evil queen.

Patrick Plourde, Creative Director, Ubisoft commented about the new game, saying...

“Ubisoft’s strengths include its diversity and the freedom it gives its creative teams,”... “We want Child of Light to be like a playable poem, a love letter to art and video games."

Nice.

One of the other tricks that they're using is implementing unedited concept art into the game in order to give players an unadulterated feeling of being right there in the midst of a great work of hand painted art. It's a beautiful concept and the execution, based on the trailer, is absolutely marvelous. Based on the little they showcased, the gameplay also seems to mirror a little bit of The Unfinished Swan, and another poetry driven game, The Note, in which the game and the poetry unfolds as players explore and traverse throughout the game world. We're really starting to see some 2deep4u games coming out of the interactive entertainment arena, and that's definitely a good thing.

However, it's not just about visuals and art – there is a strong rekindling of the classic JRPG in this game, with turn-based combat taking the stage front and center. Amidst platforming hopping, exploration and interaction, players will need to gather equipment and partake in some old-school turn-based romps to overcome the enemy.

While it's easy to pick on Ubisoft for their constant churning out of games like Assassin's Creed, of which there is yet another, I do have to give them props for taking risks on smaller, more ambitious creative ideas like Blood Dragon and Child of Light.

The game will arrive for PC, the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. You can learn more by visiting the official website.
