Diablo 3 Reaper Of Souls Mystic Detailed By Blizzard

Diablo 3's expansion Reaper of Souls will introduce a new artisan called Myriam Jahzia. This mystic, who had been axed from the base game before its launch, is able to use magic to dramatically change your equipment.

"She and her clan are nomads known as the Vecin—a spiritual people, blessed with magical visions," says Blizzard of Myriam. "They hail from a matrilineal society who worship a powerful deity known as the Allmother. The Vecin believe that the Allmother is the source of their visions, and that it is because of her that all Vecin possess a sixth sense they call the Sight. While the Sight always manifests more strongly in Vecin women, it's especiallystrong in Myriam."

When the player journeys into Westmarch in Reaper of Souls's new Act, they'll find Myriam being attacked by Malthael's forces. After rescuing her, she'll offer her services to you. Like other artisans, her capabilities will expand over time.

The first service she offers is called enchanting. With enchanting, players can reroll one property on either a Rare or Legendary cost. This is a handy option in Diablo 3, given the randomized properties of equipment. You're almost always finding items that would be perfect if they had say, Strength instead of Intelligence. Myriam gives you the chance to make that switch. If you don't like the new property that you rolled, you can revert back to the old one.

"Keep in mind that when choosing which property you wish to reroll, you will only be able to reroll that one property from then on out. After a single property has been changed via Enchanting, all other properties will become 'locked in' and cannot be rerolled. Also, once you Enchant an item, it will become bound to your account and can no longer be traded to other players."

Myriam's other service is called transmogrification. The term should sound familiar to World of Warcraft players. Transmogrification allows you to swap the visual appearance of armor or weapons with the appearance of other items. You'll get access to new Common, Magic and Rare quality appearances as you level up the Mystic. Legendary and Set appearances will be unlocked when you identify those items. Once you've unlocked an appearance, it will be available to all characters across your account so your new Crusader character won't look like complete crap in their early levels.

Transmogrification is subject to a few restrictions, though. Like enchanting, transmogrifying an item binds it to your account. You can only transmogrify an item to look like an item with the same time of animation. For example, you can't make a bow look like a club or a club look like a two-handed sword. Item appearances you unlock in Normal mode will be separate from your collection of unlockables in Hardcore.

Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls is in development for PC, Mac and PS4. It's expected to launch next year.
