Bethesda announced today that they're releasing an all-in-one compilation of the single-player RPG series Elder Scrolls. The Elder Scrolls Anthology includes the five main entries in the series along with the expansion released for each.
The anthology begins with Arena, originally released back in 1994. The Imperial Battlemage Jagar Tharn has imprisoned Emperor Uriel Septim VII in another dimension and usurped his throne. The player must gather pieces of the Staff of Chaos from across Tamriel, re-assemble the weapon, and confront Tharn in the Imperial City.
In sequel Daggerfall, players have to prevent a powerful golem known as Numidium from falling into the wrong hands. In the process, they must also avenge the murder of a king. Like Arena, Daggerfall features an enormous game world that's been randomly generated for the player.
Morrowind was set on the Dark Elf-inhabited isle of Vvardenfell. A deity named Dagoth Ur is assembling an army in order to take over all of Tamriel. The player must fulfill an ancient prophecy and defeat him. The story of this hero is continued with two expansion packs, Tribunal and Bloodmoon. Bethesda also includes the Elder Scrolls Construction Set with the game so players could create their own mods.
The 2006 release Oblivion brings players to Cyrodiil, the central province of the Empire. The Daedric prince Mehrunes Dagon is plotting to invade Tamriel. Thanks to a cult known as the Mythic Dawn, portals to his realm of Oblivion are opening throughout Cyrodiil. Players must repel the demonic invaders and defeat the cult helping them. The expansion packs Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles are both included in the game.
The collection is completed with Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, first released in 2011. This game takes players to the frozen province of Skyrim, home to the Nords. Dragons have returned and many believe them to be an omen that the apocalypse is near. The player, possessing the unique ability to fight these dragons, sets out to stop this armageddon. Skyrim's three DLC packs - Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn - add hours of additional quests to the game.
Although later games in the series were released on consoles, the first few were only available on PC. As such, the Elder Scrolls Anthology is a PC exclusive. I guess Bethesda didn't think porting the older games to Xbox 360 or PS3 would be a worthwhile pursuit.
The Elder Scrolls Anthology is priced at $79.99 / €59.99 / £49.99 / $89.99AUD. It'll be available in North America on September 10th and in Europe on the 13th.
