Guacamelee Coming To PS4 And Xbox One?

The indie hit Guacamelee could be making its way to next-gen consoles. A new report suggests that Drinkbox Studios is developing PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game.

Before Christmas, IGN published an article about the next-gen versions. Designer Chris McGuinn told them that the PS4 and Xbox On editions would have new enemies, a "chicken-bomb" ability, and two new worlds. McGuinn also promised improved graphics.

The IGN article was pulled shortly after being published. The only reason we know about it is that sites like EGM reported on the information. My guess is that Drinkbox or IGN decided to hold off on the news until after the holidays, when gamers and press are more likely to take notice. McQuinn told Joystiq that Drinkbox is "not ready to talk about any of our current projects but we'll be sure to reach out to you when we are."

In Guacamelee, El Presidente's daughter has been kidnapped by the evil Carlos Calaca. The player is a farmer-turned-luchador who sets out to save her. They'll use an arsenal of wrestling moves and magical spells to defeat Calaca and his henchmen.

Gameplay wise, Guacamelee is an action-platformer inspired by Metroid and Castlevania. Players can freely roam the 2D world and reach previously inaccessible areas by gaining new abilities. The luchador's fighting moves are used for platforming and vice versa. For example, the player will have to uppercut to reach higher ledges or double-jump to attack airborne enemies.

Guacamelee was one of my favorite games of 2013 so it's great to hear more players will get a chance to try it out. It's a demanding game that will make you invent new curse words. The flipside to its difficulty is that every completed battle or platforming segment is a satisfying victory.

Drinkbox Studios released Guacamelee on PS3 and PlayStation Vita back in April. The game then jumped to Steam this summer. If you don't want to wait for the PS4 or Xbox One versions, you can pick up the game on those other platforms for $14.99. The PC edition is 50% off until January 2nd on Steam as part of that store's holiday sale.
