A Machine for Pigs is a collaboration between The Chinese Room and Dark Descent developers Frictional Games. The Chinese Room is perhaps best known for creating Dear Esther, an experimental game in which players explore a mysterious island. They also made a Half-Life 2 horror mod called Korsakovia.

While Machine for Pigs maintains the basic gameplay of Dark Descent, it has a new story and new cast of characters.

"The year is 1899. Wealthy industrialist Oswald Mandus awakes in his bed, wracked with fever and haunted by dreams of a dark and hellish engine," reads the official description of the game. "Tortured by visions of a disastrous expedition to Mexico, broken on the failing dreams of an industrial utopia, wracked with guilt and tropical disease, he wakes into a nightmare. The house is silent, the ground beneath him shaking at the will of some infernal machine: all he knows is that his children are in grave peril, and it is up to him to save them."

In Dark Descent, players explored a castle filled with puzzles and monsters. They had no weapons so they had to run and hide from any monsters they encountered. Their character's sanity would be reduced by brushes with the occult. If they ran out of sanity, they would fall unconscious for a period of time.

Machine for Pigs is said to change the formula a bit so that players of the first game won't be be bored. The sequel sports more expansive environments and revamped enemy A.I.. The inventory has been removed as well.

Chinese Room and Frictional Games' collaboration has been a long time coming. The game was initially scheduled for Fall 2012 but has been pushed back a few times. Thankfully, the long wait is almost over.

If you're interested in pre-purchasing Machine for Pigs, you can do so through GOG or Steam. Both retailers are offering a $4 discount to pre-purchase customers.
