Skyrim Voted Best Game Of Generation

Best Games of the Generation

Bethesda's Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the best game of the generation, says Amazon UK customers. They crowned Skyrim through a month-long poll that wrapped up on August 4th.

The poll began with Amazon users nominating the 16 best games. They chose Batman: Arkham City, BioShock, BioShock Infinite, Call of Duty 4, Skyrim, Fallout 3, Far Cry 3, Grand Theft Auto IV, The Last Of Us, Mass Effect 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Portal 2, Super Mario Galaxy, Red Dead Redemption, Uncharted 2 and The Walking Dead.

That's a nice little collection of games, right there. If you had a game collection just filled with those titles, I'd say you had a very enjoyable generation. I'd probably swap in Braid or Assassin's Creed 2, perhaps in place of Far Cry 3. Amazon says that Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (another solid entry in the series due to its introduction of multiplayer) missed the top 16 by a single vote.

I'm surprised not to see any Halo or Gears of War game on the list. According to Amazon, Uncharted 2 and The Last Of Us each received more votes than all Xbox 360 exclusives combined. I would've thought Gears of War 2 and Halo 3 would stand a chance given their sales and reviews but apparently not.

After the Sweet Sixteen were assembled, Amazon had the titles battle it out in a tournament. Skyrim made it to the finals by beating out both BioShock and Super Mario Galaxy. Last Of Us, the newest title in the top 16, advanced on the other side of the bracket by besting GTA IV and BioShock Infinite. Though Last Of Us is the "it" game this summer, it couldn't take down Skyrim.

In Skyrim, players travel through the frozen hinterlands of Tamriel. They can freely explore the province of Skyrim to uncover quests, dungeons and treasures. If players are feeling goal-oriented, they can end a civil war and stop a dragon from initiating the apocalypse.

Skyrim is definitely one of my favorites from this generation so I'm happy to see it receive the recognition. I don't know if it's my absolute favorite - the combat is pretty bad - but it's certainly top five.

Bethesda plans to re-release Skyrim as part of a five-game anthology this fall. They also currently sell a Legendary Edition of the game with all of its downloadable content.
