Wasteland 2 Screenshot Shows The Graphical Power Of Unity On A Budget
Brian Fargo and inXile Entertainment are making some progress with the upcoming crowd-funded open-world isometric RPG, Wasteland 2. The game's very first Unity powered screenshot has been released and it shows gamers just how good a game can look even when on a tight budget.
Blues News picked up on the screenshot from an update on the official Wasteland 2 Facebook page. There are some mixed reactions to the screenshot but most of the user comments are quite favorable, with a majority of people commenting on how the game looks better than what they were expecting. That's definitely a plus sign to the skill of the art team and the flexibility of the Unity engine.
While a lot of gamers were surprised at the quality of the screenshot, but the thing is no one should be. Graphics technology has become so cheap and widely available that it's a lot easier to make graphically acceptable games in today's generation of technology than it was 20 years ago. As mentioned in many articles beforehand, you don't need $100 million to make a decent looking game and you certainly don't need that much to make a fun game.
I'm at least glad that inXile is showing the industry at large that most gamers would rather have a game that looks good enough but focuses on the core idea of bringing fun concepts to life and on a moderate budget. Heck, Minecraft also proves that the community is aching for good games and not just blockbuster graphic-whoring "Me-Too" clones.
I can't wait to see more of Wasteland 2. I'm hoping it's every bit as fun as the original Fallouts, Crusader, X-Com and other isometric titles from the early 90s.
