39 Amazing Spider-Man Trailer Screenshots, And What They Reveal

The new trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man that debuted last night pulled off the impossible and actually managed to live up to the hype. Revealing new scenes of Spidey flying through the air, some romance with Gwen Stacy and a good joke or two, it made a solid argument for Andrew Garfield reviving the character so soon after Tobey Maguire played him, and seemed to promise a summer blockbuster that was big and impressive but also fun. Oh, and there might have been one other tiny thing revealed in the trailer-- you know, the villain Spider-Man's fighting? The one that's been carefully hidden from us until now? Yeah, he showed up in the trailer too.

You can't really miss Rhys Ifans as the LIzard even in a quick glance at the trailer, but to really get the full effect of this character and to get sense of what he looks like, you've got to dig deeper. Looking at some frame-by-frame screenshots from the film, here's what we noticed and will be keeping an eye on when the movie comes to theaters July 3.

Here's Curt Connors when he first meets Peter Parker, looking pretty much like a regular guy. Don't expect this to last long.

In the sizzle reel they showed off during the big event yesterday, Connors explained "I'm not a cripple, I'm a southpaw." All the same, he's going to kick off the movie's action by trying to replace that missing right arm….

…Which you can see previewed in this neat shot.

I can't quite figure out the context in which Connors and Peter Parker do math problems together, but apparently Peter has some of his dad's scientific genius. Maybe he'll be helping Connors on the experiment that eventually turns him into the Lizard? That sure explains the responsibility Peter feels for creating the monster later on in the trailer.

Here is our first look at The Lizard himself in this trailer. That claw sure is terrifying.

But the eye is even more terrifying, somehow. It's that little membrane between the eyelid and the eye, like you'd see on a fish or an actual lizard, that does it. Ewwww.

This guy, presumably an innocent bystander on the bridge set up in an earlier shot, is learning first hand how terrifying that claw can be. It probably won't surprise you to know that, in the sizzle reel, we see Spider-Man swoop in to the rescue on this bridge.

The Lizard, unsurprisingly, also has super-strength great enough to lift a police van.

We hear in audio Connors taunting Peter Parker by saying, "If you want the truth Peter, come and get it." As you can see, he's not looking great at this point in the story.

Here's the closest look you're going to get at The Lizard's face in this trailer. They're still keeping a few things to themselves.

And here's the money shot of the whole thing. The Lizard is perched on top of the Oscorp tower, and Spider-Man is swinging in to catch him. Definite echoes of King Kong here, but that's fine by me-- if a Spider-Man didn't take place of the New York skyline like this, it would be a huge wasted opportunity.
