Limbo Sells One Million, Mac Version On The Way

Indie studio Playdead's debut title Limbo has hit an important sales milestone. The developer revealed that the platformer has now sold over one million copies worldwide since its debut last summer.

In Limbo, players control a boy who wakes up in a dark forest. They must avoid the monsters and other hazards throughout the forest in order to rescue their sister. The game was praised by many for its physics-based puzzles and retro, grayscale visuals.

Limbo was first released through Xbox Live Arcade in July 2010. It's since been ported to PSN and the PC. The game is now available in 9 languages and has been purchased in 153 countries.

The money from Limbo's sales has enabled Playdead to fully acquire the company from early investors. It will also fund their next project.

"With the success that Limbo has achieved, we felt this was the ideal time to fully regain our independence," said Playdead CEO Dino Patti. “We are grateful to everyone who supported us over the past few years, and look forward to forging new partnerships that will both let us reach new heights as a studio and give our director, Arnt Jensen, room to grow creatively."

The game's success has also convinced Playdead to release it on another platform. Limbo is now in development for the Mac. It's expected to arrive by the end of the year.

Playdead has yet to announce their next game. However, they've stated in recent interviews that it will be weirder than Limbo.
