Under Defeat HD: Deluxe Edition Flies From Dreamcast To PlayStation 3 This Fall

Under Defeat, a top-down shoot-em-up from developer G.rev, has led something of an interesting life. The game was originally released back in 2006 for the Sega Dreamcast. For those of you who are a bit rusty on your gaming history, that's a good five years after the console was offically announced dead in the water. Now, seven years later, it's getting a full retail (and digital) release for the PlayStation 3.

Developing for the nearly dead Dreamcast isn't actually as big of an anomaly as you might think. Several indie developers have released a handful of titles for the console over the past decade, mostly in the shmup category featuring top-down or side-scrolling bullet hell goodness. Under Defeat is one such title, and it's considered by many to be one of the finest games available for the Dreamcast, pre or post-mortem.

In Under Defeat, players take control of German-speaking pilots from the Empire, waging airial war against the English-speaking Union. The game takes place in an alternate reality World War II so, yes, you're basically playing as the Nazis. If you can move past that particular detail, you'll find yourself a fantastic arcade romp in Under Defeat.

Now, are you ready for even more bizarre news? This latest edition of the game, Under Defeat HD: Deluxe Edition will be getting a full retail release later this fall. While it can be downloaded through the PlayStation Network, you'll also be able to pick up a disc-based version of the game, both going for $39.99. The physical copy of the game will also include a digital art book, all current DLC, a soundtrack and a letter from Executive Producer Hiroyuki Maruyama.

I'd love to see Under Defeat make a success of itself on modern consoles, but only time will tell if today's players will be willing to drop 40 bucks on a top-down shooter, even if it does come with some extra goodies and one of the most off-the-wall histories in gaming.
