BioShock Infinite Sells 3.7 Million Units

Irrational Games' story-driven shooter BioShock Infinite has sold over 3.7 million copies to date. The figure was revealed by Take-Two Interactive during their earnings report for the 2013 fiscal year.

Infinite is the third game in the series and the first not to be set in the underwater city of Rapture. The game introduces Columbia, a sky-city founded as a tribute to American ideals. Private investigator Booker DeWitt journeys to the city in search of Elizabeth, a mysterious woman who has been held captive there her entire life. If Booker can rescue her, the unsavory individuals he owes money to will back off for good.

Upon release, the game was almost universally praised by critics. It has Metacritic scores of 95, 94 and 93 and the PS3, PC and Xbox 360 respectively. It appears to be the highest-rated game in 2013 thus far.

What's really rare about BioShock Infinite's critical and commercial success is that it's a single-player-only game. Irrational explored the idea of adding multiplayer but ultimately opted against it. The conventional wisdom among publishers seems to be that you need to add online play to a game in order to make it a mega-hit. Infinite will stand as proof that that's not always the case. Sometimes it's enough just to tell a really good story.

The game will continue to bring in money for Take-Two via downloadable content. There are at least three DLC packs planned. Take-Two mentioned that the Season Pass for this content is experiencing "solid demand."

The first DLC seems close to release. Achievements for the unnamed content appeared on Steam in April.
