Need For Speed Rivals Hitting Xbox One And PS4 This Year

When the Xbox One and PS4 arrive this fall, they'll be accompanied by a new Need for Speed. Need for Speed Rivals is in development for both next-gen consoles, in addition to the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Need for Speed Rivals, as yesterday's teaser image suggested, allows players to take on the role of cops or street racers in Redview County. As a racer, you'll have to evade the cops and win competitions in order to earn new cars and items. Cops, meanwhile, try to bust these joyriders in order to rise through the police department ranks and access better equipment. Cops unlock gadgets like roadblocks and helicopters while racers gain access to jammers and turbo boosts.

While the similarly-themed Need for Speed Hot Pursuit didn't have any customization, Rivals will. Players can change their car's look with various paintjobs, license plates, liveries, rims and decals. They can also apply performance upgrades to their rides.

Rivals can be played solo, but the game has integrated multiplayer features to enhance the experience. The Autolog allows you to compare stats with friends on the fly. A new AllDrive feature allows for players to jump in and out of friends' race on the fly to add a bit of unpredictability.

Ghost Games, a new EA studio, is heading up Rival's development. Burnout studio Criterion Games is helping with the project as well. They're building the game with Frostbite 3, the same tech used in Battlefield 4.

If you pre-order Rivals, you'll gain access to the Ultimate Cop Pack. This DLC includes a Nissan GT-R Black Edition cop car, new livery options, and advanced technology to help you bust those pesky racers.

NFS Rivals will hit the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC on November 19th. It's currently undated for the PS4 and Xbox One, as those consoles don't have official launch dates yet.
