Attack On Titan 3DS Game Gets First Trailer

One of the hottest anime going right now, Attack on Titan, is already getting its first video game adaptation, Attack on Titan: Last Wings of Mankind. It's coming out for the 3DS and now there's even a brief trailer to help get everyone (in Japan, at least) excited for the game's eventual release.

Sadly, there's no telling if Last Wings of Mankind will be making its way to the US and, given the 3DS' inability to play games from other regions, the only way we'll get our hands on it in the States is if someone (Please, someone!) decides to bring it overseas. While that was far less likely in previous years, we're starting to see more and more unexpected surprises on US consoles, as the ability to digitally release a game and not worry about the added costs of a boxed copy are making localization of some titles more appealing. Given the monstrous success of Attack on Titan, hopefully some awesome publisher out there realizes that there's a big enough audience here to make it worth the effort.

For those unfamiliar with the show, Attack on Titan centers on the last civilization of mankind, a massive city hidden behind three enormous walls. A looong time ago, these creatures called titans showed up, massive, creepy-as-hell humanoid creatures that take sick pleasure in consuming the flesh of normal humans.

Anyway, we managed to build a wall big enough to keep the monsters out and have managed to live in peace for a couple hundred years. Then, one day, the biggest titan anyone has ever seen (you'll get a good look at him in the trailer) shows up and literally kicks the door down, unleashing all hell upon the unsuspecting humans.

We're not totally helpless, though, as a group of elite soldiers utilizing 3D maneuvering gear (think Batman's grappling hooks on steroids) have continued to train just in case anything like this ever happens. You'll take on the role of Eren, the anime's main character, and eventually unlock the ability to play as some of his comarades.

This video first went up on Crunchyroll, who states that, along with the single player story, there will be an online portion of the game featuring customizable characters for up to three players. Given what we've seen from the game and know from the show, everything about this screams “Monster Hunter Clone” to me and, frankly, I'd be A-OK with that. I don't know any other way the game would work, really. Prepare for action in a small, interactive area, then head out into the city, forest, countryside in order to take the giant monsters down.

Being a big fan of the show, I can only keep all of my fingers and toes crossed that this game actually makes it to the States. Yeah, it's coming out pretty quickly on the heels of the show, thus suggesting a short development time, but sometimes it's nice to play a game based on something you've already poured a lot of time and emotion into, even if it doesn't turn out to be a stellar experience. Then again, maybe it'll rock.

Either way, you can check out one of our recent posts for some screenshots of the game if you like or, if you're more of a moving pictures kind of person, here's that trailer I've been rambling on about. And here's to hoping we'll ever see Attack on Titan: Last Wings of Mankind on US 3DS' at some point down the road.
