EVE Online History Book Surpasses Kickstarter Goal

Shortly into the Kickstarter for a detailed history book about the digital life and times of CCP Games' ever-evolving galactic MMO, EVE Online, the project reached its goal and then doubled it.

As of the writing of this article, the Kickstarter for an EVE Online history book, by video game journalist Andrew Groen, called "A History of the Great Empires of EVE Online" has surpassed $27,000, even though the goal was set for only $12,500.

As described in the video, the project seeks only the necessary funds to get the book printed and distributed for mass consumption.

There's more than a thousand individual backers putting their hard earned money into this project, and it's a great way to showcase that gaming as a form of human history and cultural deserves bit of a real-life, non-fictional look at the way the medium has encouraged, changed and shaped the way gamers have interacted with each other, creating a decade of hewn experiences molded from the EVE Online universe.

As mentioned on the Kickstarter page...

“It's a story about war and politics and betrayal and of course, internet spaceships. Beyond that, I've searched extensively and I believe this may be the first history book ever written about humans living in a digital world.”“This book will take readers from the very first day the servers switched on to the formation of the first regional alliances, through the Great Wars of 2004, 2007, and 2008, and into the modern era of huge power blocs of coalitions. It's a journey through the politics, warfare, and culture that have shaped Eve into the game we read about in the headlines today.“

I've never been big on the EVE scene because none of the gameplay looks like it makes a ton of sense prima facie, and the time-sink required to understand and get involved with the game is a journey all its own. Nevertheless, hundreds of thousands of gamers have taken the time to at least dabble into the shared universe of EVE Online; some attempting to make fame as smugglers, while others seek the glory and infamy of becoming a corporate warlord, ruling with an iron fist.

The game has regularly made headlines due to the unscripted, epic-battles that unfold over one scenario or another, and it seems long overdue that a book comes along to dedicate itself to the first decade of EVE's presence in the world of interactive entertainment.

The history book of EVE is set to launch both in soft-cover and digital formats by May of 2015. Pledging now guarantees you receive a copy, or you can wait it out and pick up the book from one of the few remaining book stores still standing in the wavering but still standing US of A.
