Borderlands 2 Is Free To Play Right Now

Need some cheap entertainment this weekend? Steam's got an idea: Borderlands 2. The co-op shooter is free to download for the next few days.

Borderlands 2 is set after the events of the first game. Players control one of four new characters in their quest to defeat Hyperion Corporation and their evil CEO Handsome Jack. Their adventure will take them through new areas of Pandora including frozen tundra and highlands.

If you played the first game, you'll have a pretty good idea of what to expect from the sequel. You'll face down hordes of enemies and receive piles of randomized loot as a result. If you're downed by enemies, you can revive yourself by killing one. Each character class has a unique ability to use in addition to their arsenal of weapons.

The game is free to play through Steam from now until Sunday at 1 PM Pacific Time. If you're moved to purchase the game, you can do so at 75% off. This brings price down to $4.99. The discount will run until Monday at 10 AM Pacific to give you some time to think over the purchase.

All of the DLC for Borderlands 2 is 67% off throughout the weekend as well. I usually don't opt for DLC but this game was one of the exceptions. I found the Season Pass' story-based adventures, particularly Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep, more enjoyable than the normal campaign.

The free Borderlands 2 weekend is part of a wider sale on all 2K-published games. Here are a few highlights from the sale, which runs through August 24th:

  • Civilization V Complete Edition - $16.49 (67% off)
  • BioShock Triple Pack (BioShock, BioShock 2, BioShock Infinite) - $10.19 (83% off)
  • XCOM: Enemy Unknown - $7.49 (75% off)
  • Mafia 2 - $7.49 (75% off)
  • Freedom Force - $3.74 (50% off)

Borderlands 2's follow-up, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, will launch on October 14th. This all-new adventure bridges the storylines of the first and second games in the series. Players will play as four new classes in a tale that reveals Handsome Jack's rise to power. The Pre-Sequel lets players loose on Pandora's Moon, forcing them to contend with low-gravity and new enemies.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is currently available for pre-purchase through Steam. If you own either Borderlands or Borderlands 2, Steam will knock 10% off your pre-purchase price. Regardless of whether you're a Borderlands newbie or veteran, you'll unlock the Shock Drop Slaughter Pit for The Pre-Sequel. The Slaughter Pit is a combat challenge that pits you against the Moon's "toughest Scavs."
