Assassin's Creed Unity Dead Kings Cinematic Trailer Explores Catacombs

Ubisoft unleashed a new trailer for the upcoming DLC for Assassin's Creed Unity called Dead Kings. The trailer is slick and cool and entirely CGI. Yep, no actual gameplay, just a fancy cinematic. Check it out below.

The video follows Arno Dorian in his journey into a deep series of catacombs. It starts off with a sullen air of foreboding, with Arno looking all down and out following the events of the original campaign in Assassin's Creed Unity.

Arno proceeds to take out the guards and then head into the cave. He tracks his way toward a mysterious door being guarded by a few more ruffians. One guy tries to open the door and gets electrocuted by a giant door version of a chastity belt. A rat then proceeds to break Arno's silence by trolling around and knocking off a skull from the platform; this rat-trolling causes the ruffians to get alerted and then give chase to Arno.

The most excited part of the trailer commences with a brief chase across some rickety bridges and a fight between a few of the men and Arno himself. The trailer draws to a close after the bridges are hacked down and everyone falls into a seemingly endless pit. Except, it turns out that the pit isn't actually endless and Arno manages to save himself by lodging his axe into a ledge on the side of the wall.

The whole DLC gives players a deep adventurous romp through the catacombs, as expressed in the description of the YouTube video...

“Follow Arno in his exploration of the city of Saint-Denis and its open underworld. Saint-Denis is an ancient necropolis with a vast network of catacombs and caves that hide the best kept secrets of the Kings of France.”

I never liked catacomb stages. Why? Because it seemed like they never ended and they were always confusing and they were usually setup like mazes. I still remember those awful catacombs from Syphon Filter... you were stuck in there forever and it was absolutely confusing and terrible. But it's not like we haven't had catacomb stages in Assassin's Creed games before, they were staple stage design in several of the earlier games and were usually used as bonus levels for uncovering various secrets or finding hidden rewards.

I imagine Ubisoft will try to use the DLC to help recover some of their standing with consumers over the broken launch of Assassin's Creed Unity. The game is now synonymous with “bugs and glitches” and even doing basic cursory searches for the title on search engines usually bring up the hilarious bugs that have been spread far and wide across the internet.

One thing that Ubisoft really needs to get down is extending release dates so the games are finished properly. The whole idea of having a whole season's worth of DLC lined-up while the main product is unplayable or highly glitchy for some players reflects badly on the business practices of the company.

Assassin's Creed Unity's Dead Kings DLC is scheduled to launch next week on January 13th for the Xbox One and PC and January 14th for the PS4.
