Walking Dead Shooter's Platforms Confirmed

Overkill's The Walking Dead has had its release platforms confirmed. The new shooter will be released on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and for PC in 2016. The new game has been kept under wraps for quite some time and Overkill Software is playing it awfully close to the chest regarding the game's content.

The news went live over on All Games Beta where the basic press release reveals that 505 Games will be publishing Overkill's The Walking Dead and that the game will be released both via digital distribution platforms and at local retailers as a physical copy.

Bo Andersson Klint, CEO of Starbreeze Studios commented about the publishing dead involving 505 Games, saying...

Partnering with 505 Games partner with us on the console publishing for ‘Overkill’s The Walking Dead’ will streamline the distribution and marketing of the title in the traditional space and on the digital console marketplace. Having worked together before on the successful PayDay-franchise, we are certain this will be a fruitful collaboration.

The original announcement last year had gamers quite excited given that Overkill gained a lot of positive feedback for Payday 2.

The first-person crime-heist shooter has received plenty of new DLC to help extend its playability and appeal for loyal gamers. The game has been so popular that we've seen GTA V's online heists mimic the multi-day setup of Payday 2 with their own unique take on the heists.

Even to this day Payday 2 is still well supported... on PC. One of the big reasons Overkill had to leave the Xbox 360 and PS3 behind due to the limitations of the consoles. With the recent news about 505 Games publishing Overkill's The Walking Dead it's also confirmed that the Xbox 360 and PS3 will still be left behind for this latest endeavor. It makes complete sense.

Developers have been talking about the limitations of the seventh generation home consoles for quite some time, so it's nice to finally see them let go for some of the newer games coming out. It'll be nice to see what sort of new features and content that Overkill can squeeze out of the eighth gen consoles with their take on Robert Kirkman's popular zombie-apocalypse series.

Unfortunately we don't have a lot of details on the game, so there's no way to know for sure exactly what sort of direction Overkill will take with their rendition on The Walking Dead. It's kind of obvious it's not going to be anything like the Telltale series of The Walking Dead, which are more point-and-click based. I also tend to doubt that Overkill will want to directly replicate what Activision did with The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, which starred the Dixon brothers in a throwaway first-person shooter.

If I were a betting man I would suspect that maybe we could see something on the media front when E3 lands this June. Until we get more info on the game, for now we're just left to speculate on what Overkill will do with the property, which is due for release in 2016.
