This Week In Video Games: Tony Hawk 5 Problems And Halo 6

There's been a lot of Star Citizen drama this past week. A scathing report about the game and its developer was published and then followed by an equally scathing rebuttal by director Chris Roberts. In my mind, this is a natural result of the game's open development.

Once a developer starts accepting consumers' money, there's a new level of scrutiny. Gamers - and ultimately the press - are going to wonder how the public's cash is being spent and whether it's being mishandled. On the other hand, because there are so many consumers who are financially invested in the project, some of them are going to go the extra mile to defend it. In the case of Star Citizen, there are backers devoting time to picking apart the initial report about the game's development. The debate around the game is crowd-sourced just like the funding.

I really hope that Cloud Imperium Games delivers on its huge promises for Star Citizen. We can expect plenty more arguments and accusations until that happens, though.

Quote Of The Week

"Disc-based games will be around forever. The market has seen physical music sales down 50% from its peak and physical movie sales down 60% from its peak, but even in a doomsday scenario, disc-based games will be around for a long time. I see a complimentary business where we sell discs plus download like the current console mode. Virtual reality games will also likely follow this model." - GameStop CEO Paul Raines, discussing the rise of digital distribution with Fortune.
