Hotline Miami 2's Map Editor Will Be Usable Next Month

Dennaton Games hasn't forgotten about Hotline Miami 2, the sequel to one of the most disturbing and mind-bending shooting games released in recent times. Their next goal is to make the map and campaign editor available starting December 10th.

Over on the Dennaton Games blog they announced that the release date for the beta version of the map maker will be on December 10th. The reason for the delay? Bugs... lots of bugs.

As mentioned on the blog...

There were tons of bugs found and fixed so the core of the editor feels very stable now. While the cut-scene creator and campaign editor still have some nasty bugs, Jonatan and Abstraction are going to take care of them soon and get those features all smoothed out as well.

Originally gamers were excited about the map maker, but there was a lot of silence following the release of Hotline Miami 2 back on March 10th of this year. The beta version of the map maker will enable gamers to make their own standalone challenge levels, as well as design their own campaign, complete with dialogue and cutscenes.

According to the blog post, the map maker will only be available for the Steam release of Hotline Miami 2. The release of the map maker will not initially support Steam's Workshop. However, it's noted in the post that Steam Workshop support will eventually be implemented into the game.

You won't have to go through any special steps to get your hands on the map maker, they plan on making sure anyone who wants access to the map maker can do so with ease.

Unfortunately, though, you won't be able to import music into the map maker and distribute the music with the level. Why? Well, due to all the strict copyright laws... that's why. Heck, even Rockstar couldn't get around the copyright laws for the music featured in GTA: Vice City, resulting in multiple songs from the game being removed after it returned from being pulled for Steam.

They also don't have a custom sprite editor implemented, but there's a small note saying that “other people have already created their own and they work great”, so maybe you can still import custom sprites just not make your own in the editor? That part isn't very clear.

They do plan on having video tutorials posted up to help gamers make levels and get content up and out quickly. They want to have the tutorials up as soon as the beta is made available in early December. The beta is expected to run up through early January, in which case after that they will release the full thing for everyone.

This could be a huge boon for the Hotline Miami property, because essentially players can create their own adventures and missions and continue the story well after the point where Dennaton had left it.

Unfortunately if you have Hotline Miami 2 for the PlayStation home consoles, you're in a bit of a pickle: no map editor for you. The editor will only be available for PC gamers.
