Outlast 2 Is Coming This Fall, But It Won't Take Place At Mount Massive Asylum

When Outlast was released, everyone embraced the idea that in this first-person survival horror adventure, you had no weapons and no means of defense. The only way to survive Mount Massive Asylum was to keep your handheld video camera alive by collecting batteries, and by hiding in tight areas when enemies were near. Outlast 2 has been announced for a while now, but now developers confirm that the second installment in the series won’t take place at the terrifying asylum again. Outlast developers, Red Barrels, confirmed the news in a Tweet.

In the first Outlast game, you walked into Mount Massive Asylum and learned to regret that decision seconds later. But by the time you realize what you’ve done, the doors lock you inside. It’s a stealth-based survival horror game with not a single weapon given to you. It relies heavily on jump-scares and moments of utter terror as you run away to hide from enemies in lockers and under hospital beds. What set apart Outlast from very similar games like Daylight, was the kind of terror. Daylight dealt with pretty much the same ghoul every single time. Outlast had a number of different enemies, some bigger and more violent than others. Daylight was released shortly after Outlast and it was obvious it was trying to ride the curtails of Outlast’s success with the theme of defenseless horror. Another obvious difference between the two games was I beat Daylight in about two hours, but I never made it through Outlast due to running out of batteries at the end of the game. But even then, Outlast still felt like it had more meat than Daylight. You can see the teaser trailer for Outlast 2 below.

From watching the teaser and hearing the announcement of a new setting in Outlast 2, it really makes players wonder where Red Barrels is going with this. Does it have something to do with the Ku Klux Klan? A cult in general? It’s still too early to tell.

Outlast 2 confirmed a Fall 2016 release last fall and will release on PS4, Xbox One and PC/Mac.
