The Mushroom Kingdom is coming to Minecraft in a big way next week as Mojang announces content themed after Super Mario Bros will be coming to the Wii U version of the game.
This is one of those mash-ups that makes so much sense it isn’t even funny. The original Super Mario Bros. made countless individuals into lifelong gamers 30 years ago and, nowadays, Minecraft is pulling off the very same feat.
The Mario Mash-up Pack will be available free of charge starting May 17. If you have the Wii U version of Minecraft, all you have to do is download the DLC and get to building. The set includes 15 musical numbers from the Mario game series, as well as textures for your items, a whopping 40 skins and a pre-made world that pulls inspiration from games like Super Mario World, Super Mario Galaxy, the OG Super Mario Bros. and more. So even if you’re no good at building, you’ll have plenty of fun exploring the creations Mojang have put together.
The Mojang team yesterday announced that they would be dishing out the Mario content for Minecraft but, sadly this will be limited to the Wii U version of the game due to licensing and all that jazz. But still, it's a pretty fantastic suite of awesomeness. And, as mentioned above, we’re not just talking about a couple of skins, either, but an entire, free bag of content featuring everything you need to make your own Mario-themed creations in the best build-it-yourself game on the market. They even put together a snazzy trailer to show off some of the content you’ll be getting.
As a reminder, Minecraft for the Wii U is currently only available from the eShop, where you can download it right this very minute for $29.99. If you prefer to hold off for a physical version of the game, though, it can be yours for the same price starting June 17. That version of the game will come with the Mario content baked in, too. If you only count currency in magic Nintendo monies, apparently that equates to 30 Golden Coins worth of gaming.
We’re looking forward to seeing what Mojang has put together in their Mario-themed world, but we’re equally excited to see what the community comes up with. I’m usually not too excited by existing game worlds being recreated in other games, but I might actually enjoy seeing a Minecraft map that, in one long stretch, recreates some classic Mario maps in 3D.
