The Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse Story Trailer Shows How Players Must Take A Side In War-Torn Tokyo

The story trailer is in for Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, explaining how angels and demons are fighting over the souls of Tokyo, and humans are caught in the crossfire.

Game Informer picked up the trailer that Atlus released recently to help give gamers an idea of what's going on in the alternate universe of Shin Megami Tensei IV, which takes place somewhat parallel to the events in the original Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final.

The trailer showcases some of the gameplay from the upcoming Shin Megami Tensei title, including how players will travel around the game world as the protagonist, battling and capturing demons across Tokyo, Japan. We get a quickl look at the map, which shows a rather large play area for gamers to explore,

The story trailer also reveals that a group of humans are fighting back against the demon scourge and the angel invasion, led by a young man named Flynn. The Game Informer article notes that there will likely be a crossover with the previous Shin Megami Tensei IV and some of the characters who appeared in the title.

We also learn that the game will feature more than 450 demons to capture, train and fuse together in typical Shin Megami Tensei fashion. The series is known for its Pokemon-style capture process where players can then take the demons to their lab and attempt to combine different demons together to make up an all new or improved monster. Monsters will be captured through the same turn-based combat that the series has become renown for.

I do wonder if capturing angels will also be a possibility? It's mentioned in the story trailer that the war wages on between Merkabah and Lucifer, with humans trapped in between. Players will command a character who was resurrected by a lesser god in order to do his bidding, however there's an option to either fight against the demons and help the angels, or fight against the angels and help the demons. Players will be able to choose a side that will determine the final outcome of the game.

A lot of gamers are curious how the tie-in will with with the previous Shin Megami Tensei and whether or not previous decisions made in the other game could possibly have some crossover effect? Given that the story of Apocalypse will run adjacent to Final, it's unlikely the ending chosen in Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final will have an affect on the events in Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse.

The game is due for release this summer on the Nintendo 3DS. The title is one of the few games that's been talked about quite a bit for the 3DS this year, alongside Phoenix Wright and Pokemon Sun and Moon. Unfortunately, you won't see Apocalypse at Nintendo's booth this year at E3 since they'll be focusing exclusively on The Legend of Zelda. So all promo for the game will happen under Atlus' wing and through trailers and material released outside of Nintendo's presence at E3.
