Just about every major AAA title released for home consoles and PC has a limited collector's edition made available. It's just way the business works. Mafia III also has a collector's edition and 2K rolled out some details to show games what's included.
Gamespot picked up the news and rolled out some images and information on the massive bundle pack, which clocks in at $150 for the PS4 or Xbox One. The package includes cup coasters based on the fictional Paradiso lounge, Lincoln Clay's replica dogtags, a deck of playing cards, collectible art prints based on characters featured in Mafia III, a specially covered disc case for Mafia III, the deluxe version of the game, a giant art book, and some additional DLC weapons and car packs for use in the game, along with the season pass.
The collector's edition also comes jam packed with two vinyl LPs featuring 1960s themed art of the in-game characters on the cover, and one of the 180-gram vinyls includes some of the greatest hits from the 1960s that are featured in the game's massive soundtrack line-up. The first vinyl sports 11 songs, including "The House of the Rising Sun" covered by The Animals, "I Let A Good Thing Go By" from Dewey Edwards, "Chain Gang" by Sam Cooke", "All Along The Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix", "Black Ghost Blues" by Lightnin' Hopkins, "Paint It Black" by the Rolling Stones and "Walking The Dog" by Rufus Thomas, just to name a few.
The second LP contains the original soundtrack for Mafia III from composer Jesse Harlin, the composer behind games such as Star Wars: Force Unleashed, and Jim Bonney, the music-man behind Mortal Kombat and BioShock.
If you think that the limited collector's edition contains a lot of content for a high price, 2K also has a limited version of the limited collector's edition (yes, we're going meta with the whole limited collector's thing) by allowing gamers to get their hands on a limited edition three-speed turntable for playing the vinyls for the whopping price of $300. This limited edition of the limited edition also contains everything already included in the collector's edition of Mafia III, so you're essentially paying an extra $150 for the turntable.
Additionally, said turntable will be autographed and signed by the development team at Hangar 13 Studios.
2K Games has really gone all out in promoting and trying to make Mafia III a worthwhile purchase. Whether or not they succeed will depend on what the NPD charts look like when they roll out in November. For now, though, the game seems to be holding a steady upward trend on the Steam charts and has moved a hefty amount of copies across each platform. If 2K Games can maintain the sales pace that they've achieved over the weekend, and keep it going throughout November, then they'll likely have a smash hit on their hands.
2K and Hangar 13 took a bit of a detour with Mafia III compared to the first two games by focusing on the Louisiana gangs instead of the traditional city-oriented Italian Mafia. The developers received some critical feedback from the company about that decision, but if the sales justify the creative divergence then it will have been worth it for them.
Whether you care about the thematic elements of the game or not, the limited collector's edition is available for those of you who want to get a slice of the 60's for the PS4 or Xbox One.
