Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes Could Have Co-op Multiplayer

Badman and Travis square off in Travis Strikes Again

Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes basically stole the show during Nintendo's recent indie game showcase for the Switch, and now it looks like we have even more reasons to be pumped for the game. According to a recent interview, this third installment in the No More Heroes franchise will potentially have cooperative play.

We say "potentially" because director Suda51 was a little evasive in his comments when discussing the upcoming game with the folks at Polygon. They had a chat with the legendary game creator during PAX West and, when they brought up the control scheme, Suda51 gave some pretty strong hints about multiplayer functionality.

As far as what's going to happen with the other Joy-Con, at this point technically it's still a secret...[We're] going to be releasing information at some point in the future, [but] as you can see, there are... two main characters, so draw your own conclusions, if you want.

Suda51's comments came following an explanation that he directed his team to make it so the entire game can be controlled with just a single Joy-Con controller. Of course you'll be able to use both controllers or a Pro Controller if you want, but he specifically wanted folks to be able to play the new No More Heroes with just one tiny peripheral.

There's good reason for that. In games like Mario Kart and ARMS, you can slide off the controllers, hand one to a friend and play cooperative/versus modes on a single screen. Playing with one Joy-Con might not be ideal or even super comfortable, but it definitely works in a pinch. And based on what Suda51 is saying, that's the kind of gameplay he wanted people to be able to experience with Travis Strikes Again; just pop off the controllers and, boom, you and a friend can start slaughtering goons while on the go.

As was highlighted during the game's reveal, a new secondary character has been introduced to the game. His name is Badman, and he's the alcoholic father of a character Travis killed in one of his earlier outings. The trailer included a scene of Badman trying to take out Travis himself. The two then had a tussle and, in traditional Suda fashion, things got a bit weird.

We assume this will make for an interesting relationship, as the duo clearly don't like each other. But if they're thrust into a situation they can't survive while fighting on their own, it could make for some fun and entertaining scenes of cooperative hostility. Then again, maybe there's just a separate cooperative mode and my dreams of witty banter and passive aggression will be crushed.
