The Honest Game Trailers folks are at it once again, this time setting their sights on the beloved Nintendo series, Metroid. Instead of picking apart just one game in the series, though, this five-minute romp instead takes shots at Samus Aran in her many incarnations.
Few game series have been around as long as Metroid. Starring a badass bounty hunter with an arm cannon, Samus has been fighting space pirates and Metroids since the early days of the NES. I think just about every Nintendo console outside of the Virtual Boy had some sort of Metroid game in the lineup, leading up to the recent release of Metroid: Samus Returns on the 3DS. The Switch is expected to get a new game in the Metroid Prime series at some point, too, continuing the tradition nicely.
Still, this is a series where a human woman can literally roll herself into a tiny, armored ball, so it isn't without points perfect for ribbing. And that's exactly what the Honest Game Trailers folks are good at. They've already tackled everything from Castlevania and Titanfall to The Last Guardian and Resident Evil 7, so now it's time for Samus to step up to the plate.
Unfortunately, the voice over refers to Samus' outfit as "future football armor" in the opening moments and now I'm never going to be able to un-see that. He then refers to the Metroids as "giant, floating ballsacks with teeth," so we're off to an unfortunate start in the visuals department.
I especially enjoyed a moment in the early goings when OCD is called out as Samus' greatest foe. I, for one, spent far too many hours in the Metroid and Castlevania series meticulously searching, shooting and whipping every square inch of the environment just to make sure I didn't miss a hidden item or location.
Another fun moment is when Aran's quests are referred to as nothing more than intergalactic pest control, wherein the hero of the tale destroys ancient alien structures while blasting indigenous lifeforms to dust.
After a whirlwind tour of the series' various incarnations, of course the HGT team takes a moment to take a shot at Federation Force, the spin-off game that was nowhere near as bad as folks seem to think, but still committed the crime of not being much like the original series. Of course, and as the trailer points out, Nintendo has fixed that by simply remaking the good games in the series.
As always, one of the best parts of the video comes at the end, where the cast of "Spacesylvania" is rolled out for a few extra chuckles.
