Spyro Reignited Trilogy Has Been Delayed

Spyro, in all his HD glory.

The Spyro Reignited Trilogy has been delayed, though the wait to play remastered versions of these original PlayStation classics still isn't too far over the horizon. Originally set to launch on Sept. 21, it looks like you can now mark your calendar with a fresh launch date of Nov. 13.

So the bad news is that the new Spyro collection has been delayed while the good news is that we're only talking about an extra two months. Considering how many games have been shifted from the fall to a 2019 launch window, I figure that's a pretty decent compromise. Over on the Activision website, Toys for Bob co-studio head Paul Yan made the delay official, saying that the remastered games simply needed "more love and care."

When developers shift a game's launch date for additional quality assurance, the difference is usually quite a bit longer than two months. So I take this adjusted schedule as a good sign. It sounds like the Spyro games are nearly ready to roll but, rather than go gold and start working on a day-one patch to make additional adjustments, it sounds like the team has decided to slide the launch date by about eight weeks. As I always say, I'll take a game right rather than right now and, again, it's a short delay we're talking about here.

The blog post is very light on details, only stating that Toys for Bob wants to spend more time with the games before players get their hands on them. This collection includes three classic titles built from the ground up, remember, so we figure there's quite a bit of work going on behind the scenes. And really, this new launch window might work out even better for the game. The Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a family-friendly game likely to appear on quite a few holiday shopping lists. Launching the game right before the holiday shopping season kicks into high gear could actually be a good way to bolster sales and earn it some extra attention as an alternative to more mature fall games like Red Dead Redemption 2 , Call of Duty Black Ops IIII or Battlefield V.

While there's a bit of disappointment tied to the fact that only one game will actually be on the physical media and the other two games have to be downloaded, I'm still excited to see how the Spyro collection turns out. The original game launched on the PlayStation back in 1998, a full 20 years ago. Ripto's Rage followed a year later, with Year of the Dragon hitting store shelves just a year after that. A whole bunch of additional sequels launched through 2008, with the series shifting focus to an even bigger hit, Skylanders, through the past decade. Combine that toys to life series with the popular Netflix animated series, card games and various toys and such, and we figure the Reignited Trilogy definitely has an audience; one that now needs to wait an extra two months to get their remastered games.
