Believe it or not, it's actually been one whole year since the release of Super Mario Odyssey. The game came out back in October of 2017 as an exclusive for the Nintendo Switch. Given that a year's time has passed, Nintendo thought it necessary to celebrate the release in the best way possible.
Nintendo's anniversary celebration cain two parts. The first showcased the image of the Super Mario Odyssey characters pictured above, with Mario and Bowser in their groom's attire, consisting of the white suits and matching top hats. As well, Princess Peach is accompanying the duo in her wedding gown.
On the side of the image, first shared by the game's Japanese Twitter account, are Luigi and the mayor of New Donk City, Pauline. As well, the two magical caps can be seen just above Mario, Bowser, and Peach in the background.
Nintendo of Japan then followed it up with a second tweet featuring all of the characters enjoying the first anniversary festivities by dancing it out to the Super Mario Odyssey theme song. That's the one that also plays during the Metro Kingdom segment where Mario has to race to the top of the skyscraper, where Pauline has put on a concert featuring the theme song.
The entire piece within the game is fantastically orchestrated, paying homage to Mario's classic roots in the 8-bit side-scrolling era with some side-scrolling segments. It also recognizes Mario's ascension to the realm of three-dimensional gaming, topping off with the mustachioed plumber landing on stage for a dance number with Pauline. This video doesn't go all-out like that, but is still great.
The video shared on the official Super Mario Odyssey Japanese Twitter account hits some of the same moves, if not all of them. During the dance, though, Nintendo thanked its legion of fans for supporting the game so heavily for the past year.
Funnily enough, there are actually people in the Twitter thread asking Nintendo where the new DLC is. Yes, there are actually people asking for more DLC. That's actually a rarity in today's era, where most companies load their games up with DLC so players never have to worry about asking for more, I'm sure Call of Duty and Battlefield fans know exactly what I'm talking about.
There has only been a scarcity of Super Mario Odyssey DLC, but it makes sense, given how absolutely huge the game already is. Not to mention how much content is available to uncover, unlock, acquire, and play through repeatedly. Even still, the game has managed to make its way onto the top 10 lists of a lot of critics from around the industry, and rightfully so. It's an amazing game.
If you haven't picked up a copy yet, but you have a Nintendo Switch, you definitely owe yourself the opportunity to either head to the local retailer and grab the box or download the digital version from over on the Nintendo eShop.
You can catch Mario and the gang making a return to a different form in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate this December, releasing exclusively for the Switch.
