The Wii version of GoldenEye 007 is not just a port of the Nintendo 64 version. While Activision's no doubt banking on nostalgia to move a few copies, the fact is that there's been numerous changes. In a walk-through of the game's single-player, I was able to check out some of the differences between the Wii and N64 editions.

While the "big moments" from the N64 campaign will be present in this new version, there's going to be many points where the two deviate. The original GoldenEye 007 begins with Bond sky-diving off a dam to infiltrate a secret Russian facility. In the remake, there's at least one level before that happens. Bond (now modeled after Daniel Craig rather than Pierce Brosnan) and fellow British agent Alec Trevelyan have a few other tasks to complete before they head into the facility.

You're often given a choice of whether or not to be stealthy. In the walk-through, Bond started out with the silent approach and knocked out a patrolling guard by hand. Gone are the laughable karate chops from the original. Melee takedowns are now motion-captured, visceral executions. In addition to looking cool, these brutal knockouts tie in with Craig's more brawny portrayal of Bond.

Craig's Bond also doesn't use gadgets very often and the new GoldenEye reflects that. Both of the gadget uses in the trailer were performed with one device, his smartphone. At one point he hacks a computer with it and later on he uses it to take photos of an experimental helicopter. While they may have other gadgets in the game, it seems like they want to avoid having the player rifling through their inventory all the time.

In the thirteen years since the N64 GoldenEye, shooters have evolved and improved quite a bit. Developer Eurocom has implemented a number of changes to bring the game up to code. You can now vault obstacles and low ledges with the press of a button. Certain parts of the environment are now destructible; during a firefight the concrete divider we were hidden behind was ripped to shreds by enemy gunfire. The sniper rifle now has a thermal vision scope so you can see illuminated, black and white images of your enemies and pick them off more easily.

The most striking change to the combat, though, was the addition of breaching. Much like Modern Warfare 2, the Wii GoldenEye has instances where you blow open a door and then storm in. You're given a few moments of slow motion to pick off these foes before they can react. In the part seen in the demo, failing to kill all three enemies would've resulted in one raising the alarm.

It would've been very easy for Activision to simply dump a straight port of the N64 GoldenEye on Virtual Console, PSN, and Xbox Live and collect lots of our sweaty money. However, they've opted to publish a completely remade version from the ground up. While many folks will pick up the Wii version simply because of their fond memories of its predecessor, the fact is that there's plenty of new features to be excited about. I think it'll be very tough to go back to the N64 version after experiencing the improvements of the new edition.
