Deceased Nirvana guitarist Kurt Cobain is a playable character in Guitar Hero 5. Cobain's widow Courtney Love is displeased with this and is threatening legal action against GH publisher Activision.
“For the record this Guitar Hero shit is breach of contract on a Bullys part and there will be a proper addressing of this and retraction," Love tweeted recently (thanks, Eurogamer). "WE are going to sue the shit out of ACtivision we being the Trust the Estate the LLC the various LLCs Cobain Enterprises."
Activision needed the Cobain estate's approval (i.e. Courtney Love) to put him in the game in the first place so it's weird to see her so riled up. Supposedly the reason she's distressed is that you can apparently play any song in the game with his avatar. Perhaps she was under the impression that he would only be a playable character for Nirvana songs? Or maybe she didn't know he was going to be in the game at all? Beats me. Licensing and copyrights are complicated enough without being filtered through Courtney Love's brain.
Update: Activision sent out a statement to Joystiq that confirms Love is the one who signed off on Cobain's appearance in the game: "Guitar Hero secured the necessary licensing rights from the Cobain estate in a written agreement signed by Courtney Love to use Kurt Cobain's likeness as a fully playable character in Guitar Hero 5."
