Lex Luthor and the Joker will not be brought to justice this year. Sony Online Entertainment revealed today that they've delayed DC Universe Online until 2011.

"SOE is dedicated to delivering the highest quality game experiences possible," said John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment. "DC Universe Online is the first game of its kind, and a truly massive undertaking -- the first action MMO set in the DC Universe, the first MMO on the PlayStation 3, and the first time the entire DC Universe will be accessible to the millions of fans who are eagerly anticipating its release. As the game heads into external beta testing, this extra time will allow us to address community feedback in a meaningful way. When we get deeper into external beta, we’ll be able to share more information regarding the new launch date."

To balance out the bad news, SOE announced some information about the upcoming beta. Players who received VIP keys at special events or have already registered on the game's official website will receive priority access to the beta. Invites will be going out as early as next week. Everyone who pre-orders the game by November 15th in North America will get beta access by the 30th. All participants in testing will get a special beta emblem for their character upon the game's launch.

If you miss that November 15th deadline, you can still participate in the beta. You'll get access a week before the full game goes live. This will enable you to experience the end of the beta event, entitled "Battle of the Legends".

SOE also revealed that they're planning a PS3 version of DCUO's Collector's Edition for North America. It'll have the same goodies as the previously-announced PC edition.
