Save the virtual cheerleader, save the virtual world? Not anymore. Ubisoft, the company charged with making a video game based on the television show Heroes, has scrapped the project.
“The rights to the ‘Heroes’ video game have reverted back to NBC Universal. Ubisoft will no longer produce a video game based on the TV series," a Ubisoft spokesperson told MTV Multiplayer. The game was announced last summer and was set to be released by the end of this year.
No specific reason was given for the move. NBC fired Jesse Alexander and Jeph Loeb, co-executive producers of the television series earlier this week, supposedly out of dissatisfaction with the creative direction of the show. Perhaps the cancellation of the game was part of a wider attempt by NBC to reexamine the franchise.
There's also the possibility Ubisoft wasn't happy with how their video game adaptations of CSI:NY and Lost, both released this year, turned out. Or it could be chalked up to our economy sucking balls. Not many details about the project were revealed since its announcements so it's hard to get broken up over this.
