Today Crystal Dynamics announced that they're working on a new Tomb Raider game. The twist is that it's not actually called Tomb Raider.

Instead, the game's called Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. It's set to be released digitally in 2010. Crystal Dynamics will be showing it off behind closed doors at Game Developers Conference next week so expect more information soon.

It's curious that they'd drop the Tomb Raider name from the title. "Lara Croft" is still very recognizable but less so. Still, the Tomb Raider name has really lost its shine over the past decade due to some fairly middling games.

I suppose it's a way to indicate a new direction for the series in terms of its story or gameplay. Job listings from last year indicated that Crystal Dynamics was working on a multiplayer game. Could this be it?
