Tales of Games is making good progress on their sequel to freeware RPG Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden. They've released the first trailer for Barkley 2 showing off some pre-alpha gameplay.
The original Barkley stars former NBA great Charles Barkley. After he accidentally killed scores of people with a Chaos Dunk in 2041, basketball was banned and many players were hunted down. Barkley begins 12 years later in Neo New York, a "post-cyberpocalyptic" city.
It was pretty much impossible for the developers to make any money off the original game. In addition to starring real-world NBA players, the game played it fast and loose with copyrights. I mean, it's breaking a couple copyrights in the title alone.
The sequel, The Magical Realms of Tír na nÓg: Escape from Necron 7 – Revenge of Cuchulainn: The Official Game of the Movie – Chapter 2 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa. All of the game's assets have been created from scratch. The developers are also using Sir Charles' name and likeness a bit less.
Like its predecessor, Barkley 2 utilizes the Game Maker engine. However, it's a top-down shooter/RPG instead of a JRPG.
"It's been our intention to make Barkley 2 an action RPG since before the original Barkley was even out," the developers said in the FAQ of their successful Kickstarter campaign. "We have a lot of really great ideas to make this a game that is as fun as it is funny, which wasn't really the case with the original. Lastly, turn-based RPGs where you only control one character generally aren't very fun!"
Though the gameplay has changed dramatically, Barkley 2 still retains the bizarre tone of the original game.
"The year is 666X. A powerful youngster, wise beyond his years, awakens from a B-Ballinduced coma aboard the mysterious dwarf space ziggurat Necron 7, held captive by the Malevolent A.I. Cuchulainn," reads the story synopsis. "With no memory of who he is or where he came from, he adopts the identity of X114JAM9 and sets off into the Post-Cyberpocalyptic Wastelandin search of the enigmatic Cyberdwarf, the only one who can reveal to him the terrible truth behind his forgotten past and make sense of his harrowing future. "
Barkley 2 will hit the PC in the fourth quarter of 2013. That should give series newcomers plenty of time to play the first game, which is free to download through ToG's website.
